Latest / Beyond The Horizon / The Depraved Nature Of Rex Heuermann's Google Search History

- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome back to the program. According
- 0:05Speaker 1: to authorities, Rex Ewerman was up to all kinds of
- 0:08Speaker 1: funky stuff on the internet. And those activities included all
- 0:13Speaker 1: kinds of Google searches for not only serial killers in
- 0:18Speaker 1: the country or himself as far as the Gilgo Beach
- 0:22Speaker 1: serial killer. But he was also looking up another man
- 0:27Speaker 1: who was convicted of being a serial killer on Long Island.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And that man is John Bittroff. And just a quick
- 0:35Speaker 1: overview on John Bittroff. He's an American convicted murderer and
- 0:40Speaker 1: former suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, which
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm not too sure if that's true. I don't know
- 0:47Speaker 1: if John Bittroff was ever really looked at, by the
- 0:50Speaker 1: investigators anyway, as a suspect. However, the internet always tried
- 0:55Speaker 1: to put John Bittroff in there as a possible for
- 1:00Speaker 1: the Gilgo Beach serial killer. And I never thought that
- 1:03Speaker 1: it fit with the two victims that he had that
- 1:06Speaker 1: were confirmed. He had his DNA on those victims. So
- 1:11Speaker 1: if that's the case and his DNA was found on
- 1:14Speaker 1: those women, don't you think that his DNA would have
- 1:17Speaker 1: been found on the Gilgo for? I mean, what did
- 1:19Speaker 1: he become an expert in forensics all of a sudden
- 1:23Speaker 1: and stop leaving his DNA profile everywhere? I don't buy it.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So there was a point in time where people on
- 1:30Speaker 1: the internet certainly thought that Bitterolf was involved in the
- 1:34Speaker 1: Gilgo Beach murders. In July of 2014, he was charged
- 1:38Speaker 1: with the murder of Rita Tangretti and Colleen McNamee. He
- 1:43Speaker 1: is also a suspect in the murder of a third woman,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Sandra Castilla. Bitterolf became a suspect in the unsolved murders
- 1:51Speaker 1: after his brother, Timothy, was partially matched to DNA found
- 1:55Speaker 1: on the bodies in 2013. Timothy Bitteroff submitted the sample
- 2:01Speaker 1: after violating an unrelated order of protection. On July 5th, 2017,
- 2:07Speaker 1: Bitteroff was found guilty on the second-degree murders of Tangretti
- 2:12Speaker 1: and McNamee. He was sentenced to 50 years to life
- 2:15Speaker 1: in prison on September 12th, 2017. He is imprisoned at
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Clinton Correctional Facility. His department identification number is 17A3925.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So this is the man that Rex Heuermann was Googling.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And the question now becomes, why was he Googling John Bitterolf?
- 2:38Speaker 1: What was he looking for? Well, today we have an
- 2:41Speaker 1: article from Patch.com. that came out, oh, a few days
- 2:45Speaker 1: after Rex Uriman was arrested. But I've had this one
- 2:48Speaker 1: bookmarked so that when we got to a point when
- 2:51Speaker 1: there was a bit of a lull, we could go
- 2:53Speaker 1: back and take a look at some of the Google
- 2:55Speaker 1: searches that Rex Uriman was up to and the fact
- 2:59Speaker 1: that he was looking for John Bitterolf during some of
- 3:03Speaker 1: those Google searches. So let's get to it. Headline, convicted
- 3:07Speaker 1: murderer was in Rex Uriman's Google sites, according to court documents.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Though John Bitteroff is serving time upstate, his name was
- 3:16Speaker 1: not forgotten by the Gilgo Beach slaying suspect court documents show.
- 3:22Speaker 1: This article was authored by Peggy Spellman Huey. Of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: more than 200 Google searches Rex Uriman conducted, one stood out,
- 3:32Speaker 1: pointedly naming a Manorville man convicted in the cold case
- 3:36Speaker 1: murders of two sex workers and later thought to be
- 3:40Speaker 1: connected to the Gilgo Beach slayings himself. Before his arrest Thursday,
- 3:45Speaker 1: Heuermann obsessively searched for information on the Gilgo case, authorities said.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And this is something that you see very often with
- 3:55Speaker 1: serial killers. You know that guys like Ted Bundy would
- 4:00Speaker 1: go back to the scene of the crime. He'd bury
- 4:03Speaker 1: girls and then go back and do very disgusting things
- 4:06Speaker 1: to their remains. Gary Ridgway, another one. He said that
- 4:10Speaker 1: he loved going by the sites where he dumped women.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And it goes on and on and on and on.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Guys like Ed Kemper have said the same thing. So
- 4:18Speaker 1: when you're talking about somebody with this sort of psychopathy,
- 4:23Speaker 1: this is certainly one of the things that they're into.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Following along with the investigation, seeing where things stand, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: seeing how the misery unfolds. The 59-year-old architect with a
- 4:35Speaker 1: penchant for furniture making posed questions asking the search engine
- 4:41Speaker 1: why the killer hasn't been caught and why law enforcement
- 4:44Speaker 1: could not trace the calls made by the Long Island
- 4:47Speaker 1: serial killer. And since he was in Manhattan when he
- 4:51Speaker 1: made those calls around so many people, it was very,
- 4:54Speaker 1: very difficult for them, if not impossible, to get a
- 4:57Speaker 1: lock on the phone number that was calling and then
- 5:00Speaker 1: to find out where that phone was calling from. You're
- 5:03Speaker 1: talking needle in a haystack. His searches between March 2022
- 5:08Speaker 1: and June 2023 were related to active and known serial killers,
- 5:14Speaker 1: the specific disappearances and murders of Maureen Brainerd Barnes, Melissa Bartholomew,
- 5:20Speaker 1: Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, and the investigation into their murders.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Chief Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Alan Bode wrote, in the
- 5:30Speaker 1: request for remanding him without bail. And keep in mind,
- 5:34Speaker 1: we're only getting the Google searches that relate directly to
- 5:38Speaker 1: the charges that we're seeing against Rex Heuermann. There's no
- 5:41Speaker 1: way that these are all the Google searches that he
- 5:44Speaker 1: was getting up to. All these years? You mean to
- 5:47Speaker 1: tell me that's it? No freaking way. So this guy
- 5:50Speaker 1: was definitely getting up to more. And if he was
- 5:52Speaker 1: looking at these victims, maybe, just maybe, he was keeping
- 5:56Speaker 1: track of some of the other people that we don't
- 5:59Speaker 1: know about that he killed. And if so, hopefully, the
- 6:03Speaker 1: authorities will be able to tag him with those murders.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And if he was searching for specific people, that's going
- 6:10Speaker 1: to make their job a whole lot easier. Heuermann not
- 6:14Speaker 1: only typed in the names of Waterman, Bartholomew, and Brainerd Barnes,
- 6:18Speaker 1: he searched for the family members of Bartholomew and Waterman. Now,
- 6:23Speaker 1: what kind of sick, degenerate bastard is looking for the
- 6:27Speaker 1: family members of somebody that they just killed? Now, we're
- 6:31Speaker 1: talking about a serious, serious nutjob here. I mean, this
- 6:36Speaker 1: is the kind of thing that you would see in, like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: a very disturbing movie about serial killers. But then you
- 6:43Speaker 1: realize that everything you see in a movie about serial killers, well,
- 6:48Speaker 1: it's ripped from real life. And these monsters truly are
- 6:51Speaker 1: walking amongst us. One name stood out on the list
- 6:55Speaker 1: of searches, the partially misspelled name of convicted murderer John
- 7:00Speaker 1: Bitteroth as John Bitteroth. And then here were some of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the searches. One, why could law enforcement not trace the
- 7:08Speaker 1: calls made by the Long Island serial killer? Two, Why
- 7:12Speaker 1: hasn't the Long Island serial killer been caught? 3. Long
- 7:15Speaker 1: Island serial killer 4. Long Island serial killer phone call 5.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Long Island serial killer update 6. Long Island serial killer
- 7:25Speaker 1: update 2022 7. FBI active serial killers 8. Serial killers
- 7:33Speaker 1: by state 2023 9. Map of all known serial killers 10.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Unsolved serial killer cases 11. America's five most notorious old cases. 12.
- 7:47Speaker 1: 11 currently active serial killers. 13. Eight terrifying active serial
- 7:53Speaker 1: killers we can't find. 14. John Bittroff. 15. Megan Waterman. 16.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Melissa Bartholomew. 17. Maureen Brainerd Barnes. 18. Redacted. Name of
- 8:07Speaker 1: relative of Melissa Bartholomew. 19. Redacted. Name of relative of
- 8:13Speaker 1: Megan Waterman. 20. Cops launch Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force. 21.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Mapping the Long Island murder victims. 22. Inside the Long
- 8:26Speaker 1: Island serial killer and Gilgo Beach. 23. The Gilgo Beach killer,
- 8:31Speaker 1: criminal minds. 24. In the Long Island serial killer investigation,
- 8:37Speaker 1: new phone technology may be the key to break in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the case. So this guy... was Googling all of this,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and little did he know that it would be the
- 8:46Speaker 1: phone technology that would come back to slap him directly
- 8:50Speaker 1: in his big-ass ogre head. Bittroff, a 57-year-old former carpenter,
- 8:55Speaker 1: was convicted six years ago of two counts of second-degree
- 8:58Speaker 1: murder in the killings of Rita Tangretti, 31, of each Pachogi,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and Colleen McNamee, 20, of Holbrook. Bittroff is serving a
- 9:08Speaker 1: 50-year-to-life prison sentence upstate at Clinton Correctional Facility, according to
- 9:14Speaker 1: the state's Department of Correctional Services. Tangretti's body was found
- 9:20Speaker 1: in 1993 in a wooded area off the Esplanade Drive
- 9:25Speaker 1: in East Patchogue and McNamee the following year in 1994
- 9:30Speaker 1: in a wooded area south of the Long Island Expressway
- 9:34Speaker 1: in Shirley, prosecutors said. Both of the naked and mutilated
- 9:38Speaker 1: women were strangled and suffered blunt force trauma to their heads,
- 9:43Speaker 1: according to the prosecutors. And it never really added up
- 9:47Speaker 1: with the Gilgo Beach killings. I never thought that Bitteroff
- 9:50Speaker 1: was even a suspect, honestly. All of the people that
- 9:54Speaker 1: were talked about, from him to Brewer to Hackett, I
- 9:58Speaker 1: never found any of them to be compelling as the
- 10:01Speaker 1: person who was going to end up being the Long
- 10:04Speaker 1: Island serial killer. After the verdict came in, then Suffolk
- 10:07Speaker 1: District Attorney Thomas Spoda said, the families of these women
- 10:12Speaker 1: have been through an agonizing, long wait for justice, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: during the trial, they had to endure graphic testimony about
- 10:19Speaker 1: the death and of their loved one. And that is
- 10:22Speaker 1: really something that's going to be just beyond the pale
- 10:26Speaker 1: when we're talking about Rex Uerman and his trial, especially
- 10:31Speaker 1: if they tag other bodies to him. It's going to
- 10:35Speaker 1: be a very, very hard process for these families to
- 10:39Speaker 1: relive all of that. We hope the verdict today gives
- 10:42Speaker 1: them some semblance of peace, he said. Bitterolf would have
- 10:46Speaker 1: been around 27 at the time of the murders. He
- 10:49Speaker 1: was tracked down by DNA evidence linked to his brother,
- 10:53Speaker 1: who got a traffic ticket. After bitter of sentencing, Assistant
- 10:57Speaker 1: District Attorney Robert Biancavilla told reporters that he might be
- 11:02Speaker 1: connected to the death of at least one of the
- 11:04Speaker 1: 10 people found buried at Gilgo Beach. CBS News reported.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Bianca Villa said that the remains of some of the
- 11:12Speaker 1: victims may be attributed to the handiwork of Mr. Bitterolf
- 11:17Speaker 1: and that the investigation was ongoing, according to the outlet.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Patches reached out for comment to attorney Jonathan Manley, who
- 11:25Speaker 1: represented Bitterolf in his trial. In response to Bianca Villa's comment,
- 11:30Speaker 1: Manley said that prosecutors never mentioned any connection between Bitterolf
- 11:35Speaker 1: and the Gilgo Beach throughout the trial, Fox News reported.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So if they had any goods on them, they would
- 11:41Speaker 1: have tagged them with it, right? They're trying to clear
- 11:44Speaker 1: those cases. The last thing they want to do is
- 11:47Speaker 1: have a bunch of cold cases on their hands. So
- 11:49Speaker 1: if they could tag them to some serial killer, so
- 11:51Speaker 1: much the better. But they weren't able to do that.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And that's because the evidence wasn't there to connect Bitterolf
- 11:58Speaker 1: to these other bodies. This was never mentioned before, Manley
- 12:02Speaker 1: told the outlet. This is a serious accusation with absolutely
- 12:07Speaker 1: no factual basis. Mr. Bitterolf maintains his innocence in the
- 12:11Speaker 1: deaths of Miss Tangretti and Miss McNamee, and any insinuation
- 12:16Speaker 1: that he had anything to do with the Gilgo killings
- 12:18Speaker 1: is laughable and meant simply to attract headlines. Biancavilla will
- 12:23Speaker 1: significantly impede the prosecution by immediately creating reasonable doubt whenever
- 12:29Speaker 1: the killer or killers are apprehended, Manley told the outlet.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And look, there's no doubt that Heuermann's lawyers are going
- 12:36Speaker 1: to look to utilize all of this. When we talk
- 12:39Speaker 1: about loopholes and technicalities, Rex Uerman is exactly the kind
- 12:43Speaker 1: of guy that's going to try and utilize that stuff.
- 12:46Speaker 1: The searches of Uerman, who told an interviewer last year
- 12:50Speaker 1: that he practices in his father's workshop, included phrases like
- 12:54Speaker 1: Long Island Killer and touched on the phone call made
- 12:57Speaker 1: updates and used phrases like FBI Active Serial Killers, Serial
- 13:02Speaker 1: Killers by State 2023, Map of All Known Serial Killers,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and unsolved serial killer cases. He also queried America's five
- 13:12Speaker 1: most notorious old cases, 11 currently active serial killers, and
- 13:18Speaker 1: eight terrifying active serial killers we can't find. He also
- 13:23Speaker 1: searched news articles like Cops Launch Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation
- 13:28Speaker 1: Task Force, Mapping the Long Island Murder Victims, and Inside
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Long Island Serial Killer and Gilgo Beach. Other articles
- 13:37Speaker 1: included the Gilgo Beach Killer, Criminal Minds, and in Long
- 13:41Speaker 1: Island Serial Killer Investigation, new phone technology may be key
- 13:46Speaker 1: to break the case. His other Google searches centered on
- 13:50Speaker 1: sadomasochistic and fetish pornography that involved the beating and rape
- 13:55Speaker 1: of young girls and women. Heuermann was charged with three counts,
- 14:00Speaker 1: each of first and second degree murder, in the deaths
- 14:03Speaker 1: of Waterman, Bartholomew, and Costello. Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney
- 14:09Speaker 1: said Friday that he remains a prime suspect in the
- 14:12Speaker 1: death of Brainerd Barnes. In his request for no bail,
- 14:16Speaker 1: Bodie said it was based on the serious, heinous nature
- 14:20Speaker 1: of these serial murders and the only way to ensure
- 14:23Speaker 1: his return to court. Huerman, who is on suicide watch,
- 14:28Speaker 1: remains in the custody of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office,
- 14:32Speaker 1: a spokeswoman said. And I think that when all is
- 14:35Speaker 1: said and done here and the investigation moves into the
- 14:38Speaker 1: next phase, we're going to learn that these Google searches
- 14:41Speaker 1: were a treasure trove of information for the investigators. And
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'm very interested to see what else this sick piece
- 14:50Speaker 1: of shit was looking for. All right, folks, that's going
- 14:53Speaker 1: to do it for this one. All of the information
- 14:55Speaker 1: that goes with this episode can be found in the
- 14:58Speaker 1: description box.
