- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, back for the second week in a row.
- 0:16Tyler Johnson: Across the interwebs from me is Chad and Phil. Hey guys, what's up?
- 0:22Phil: Hey, how's it going?
- 0:23Tyler Johnson: Not much, just hanging out.
- 0:25Tad Eggleston: I didn't… I didn't hear any webs.
- 0:27Tyler Johnson: Oh, shoot! And across the interwebs.
- 0:30Phil: No, no, I'm running away!
- 0:31Tyler Johnson: Hold on. And across the interwebs, From me, it's Tad and…
- 0:39Phil: Well, now let's just getting into farts.
- 0:41Tyler Johnson: That's… now it's just gross.
- 0:43Tad Eggleston: I ran out of web fluid.
- 0:45Tyler Johnson: That sure was.
- 0:47Phil: That excuse only works once in a while.
- 0:50Tyler Johnson: That's what that was. Alright, how's it going, guys?
- 0:55Tad Eggleston: It's been a day.
- 0:57Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 0:58Phil: It's been a year and… A year?
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: A year in a day?
- 1:03Phil: Yeah.
- 1:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's been quite the… quite the year so far.
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: Like, okay, before we get into what kind of week slash day has it been.
- 1:12Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: Let's do a little bit of comics news. First, and I say this not having actually done it myself yet, because it's been that kind of week. Go check out the Beats Annual Creator Survey. It's always great, so I assume it's great again this year.
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: Also, January 1st is Public Domain Day, and we got some interesting ones. Betty Boop?
- 1:35Tad Eggleston: Blondie and Dagwood, Nancy Drew, The Little Engine That Could…
- 1:42Phil: And the original…
- 1:43Tad Eggleston: Maltese Falcon novel all hit public domain.
- 1:47Tyler Johnson: But it's.
- 1:47Phil: Is the Maltese Falcon from Maltese Falcon in the public domain now? That's the real question.
- 1:55Tad Eggleston: I don't know if you could actually copyright that. The movie's not in public domain, but the novel is.
- 2:00Phil: Hmm, okay.
- 2:02Tyler Johnson: Okay, also, I mean…
- 2:05Tad Eggleston: when Gatsby went public domain, we immediately got, like, 4… Gatsby comic adaptations.
- 2:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, that's the sort of thing that I'm… and yes, Tyler, there is already a Betty Boop slasher movie that's been filming and will be out soon.
- 2:26Tyler Johnson: You were close. I know. You were close. I know that's where we were going. No, no, it was actually more about, Betty… it wasn't Betty Boop, but it was, but, more so, like, who's gonna make the first disgusting Betty Boop thing?
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: Again, there's already a Betty Boost…
- 2:42Tyler Johnson: I meant… no, I meant… I meant porn-wise, you know.
- 2:45Tad Eggleston: Oh, I mean, I mean, there is already the, the Mr. Boop comic.
- 2:52Tyler Johnson: I don't know about that, okay.
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: I don't actually think it's disgusting, but there is parts of it that could be argued to be pornographic.
- 3:01Tyler Johnson: Yeah, no, I'm… I'm just, you know, there's…
- 3:04Tyler Johnson: Betty Boop's now in public domain. I can't, believe we haven't seen more of the…
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: It's…
- 3:12Phil: The pornographers have been waiting until now, now.
- 3:16Tyler Johnson: to release it.
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: Because, well, because pornographers are totally known for…
- 3:22Tyler Johnson: Following the law.
- 3:23Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and, like, not hiding behind the idea that it's a parody.
- 3:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 3:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, how many movies are called a porn parody?
- 3:38Tyler Johnson: I don't know, Tad, how many?
- 3:40Tad Eggleston: That's not really Captain Kirk.
- 3:44Phil: Whoa!
- 3:46Phil: Oh, boy.
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm interested.
- 3:49Phil: If we could keep… if we could keep it to comics talk, you know?
- 3:53Tyler Johnson: That's true. We gotta stay on topic.
- 3:55Phil: Certainly cut down on the porn.
- 3:58Tyler Johnson: We gotta go home.
- 3:59Tad Eggleston: I can't…
- 4:00Phil: 22 panels after dark!
- 4:03Tad Eggleston: It's…
- 4:03Tyler Johnson: the ass.
- 4:04Tad Eggleston: Too dark. Yeah, we can't quite, because we did,
- 4:10Tad Eggleston: Bomb a foreign nation late last night, early this morning?
- 4:14Tyler Johnson: Holy buckets, can you believe that?
- 4:16Tad Eggleston: And, and kidnap a foreign leader?
- 4:19Tad Eggleston: Like…
- 4:19Tyler Johnson: You know what? It's happening!
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: I think my best take is, I think… I think it was Aaron Rupar who pointed out that, so… there's something darkly humorous about all of his cronies making the argument that…
- 4:35Tad Eggleston: that the fact that Maduro has been indicted in the Southern District of New York is evidence that he's a dictator and overall bad guy.
- 4:47Phil: Right, yeah, the implication.
- 4:49Tad Eggleston: We don't know anybody who's been indicted in the Southern District of New York.
- 4:54Phil: Certainly not charged with 36 felonies.
- 4:58Tyler Johnson: Was it 37?
- 4:59Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, no. That was New York State felonies, and he wasn't charged, he was convicted. Southern District of New York is where he was…
- 5:09Tad Eggleston: Oh, what did he get charged for… charged with in… in Southern District of New York?
- 5:17Tyler Johnson: Well, I don't know, just take your picture.
- 5:19Tad Eggleston: I think that was actually where the insurrection one got charged.
- 5:23Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 5:25Tyler Johnson: Where was I? What insurrection are you talking about?
- 5:28Tad Eggleston: What insurrection?
- 5:30Phil: Where the hell? Is this a joke?
- 5:32Tyler Johnson: Yes. Okay.
- 5:34Phil: Okay.
- 5:35Tyler Johnson: I mean…
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: You must remember that Tyler's from Bumfuck, Minnesota. Exactly. So, like…
- 5:43Phil: Exactly! This is… I don't know…
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: He is regularly brainwashed and indoctrinated.
- 5:49Phil: You know, have we asked him where he was on January 6th?
- 5:54Phil: I'm so sorry.
- 5:56Tyler Johnson: Let's see, where… where was that? Like, I was…
- 6:00Tad Eggleston: Was I? He was teaching.
- 6:03Phil: I'm sure, I'm sure.
- 6:05Tyler Johnson: Jenny…
- 6:07Tad Eggleston: I seem to remember he and I texting about it while we were both teaching.
- 6:11Phil: And, like, trying to teach while it was going on, and wanting to keep track of it. Yeah, that's pretty impossible. That's… that's.
- 6:19Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 6:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, he had even less ability to talk about it than I did.
- 6:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I think… because I think when… now that I'm remembering, I think your texts were in the morning, so I was in elementary classes, you know, if it was morning time, so…
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was.
- 6:38Tyler Johnson: Good times!
- 6:40Tyler Johnson: But… Anywho, yes, Venezuela. What's going on in Venezuela?
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: I mean, we don't know for certain yet, except that, like.
- 6:51Tad Eggleston: Our dear leader does say the,
- 6:55Tad Eggleston: The quiet part out loud, he wants the oil.
- 6:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 7:01Tad Eggleston: It's not gonna cost us anything, because we're taking their oil. He said those words. Maybe, maybe I'm paraphrasing a little bit, but not much.
- 7:12Tyler Johnson: And of course, like… Yeah, he made a comment…
- 7:14Tad Eggleston: His life doesn't mean anything to him, so…
- 7:16Tyler Johnson: No.
- 7:17Tyler Johnson: He made the comment that, Columbia better watch out.
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: Watch their ass.
- 7:24Tyler Johnson: That's what he said. That's what he said, yeah.
- 7:26Phil: Shit.
- 7:29Phil: That's, yeah.
- 7:31Tyler Johnson: Let that sink in.
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: They've, they've also, they've also made, .
- 7:36Tyler Johnson: Isn't Trump also the guy that constantly brags about being the only president not to start wars?
- 7:42Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, he did win the FIFA Peace Prize.
- 7:49Tyler Johnson: Where's… where's mine? I heard that's a participation trophy, anyway.
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you can get one in every Happy Meal.
- 7:56Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 7:56Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, I'm sorry, that… McDonald's, please don't sue me.
- 8:01Tad Eggleston: At least don't swim at McDonald's. That wasn't… that wasn't aimed at you, McDonald's. Oh, boy.
- 8:06Tyler Johnson: Oh, boy.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: Except for the one that let him work the drive-thru window.
- 8:12Phil: Oh.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: The weirdest drive-thru ever.
- 8:15Phil: Why couldn't someone have done the shake bomb just then, you know?
- 8:19Tyler Johnson: You know, just chuck it at him.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: Well, because they vetted the people who went through the drive-through window.
- 8:26Phil: I'm sure, I'm sure.
- 8:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah, dude, I'll be honest.
- 8:29Phil: Yeah.
- 8:32Tyler Johnson: Alright, guys, how's…
- 8:34Phil: Alright.
- 8:34Tyler Johnson: How does it sound to you guys? Let's get rolling in comics.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: I-I-I think I'm okay with that.
- 8:41Tad Eggleston: I think that, maybe…
- 8:46Tad Eggleston: Maybe this whole comic thing that we came for is… is something that we should do, so why…
- 8:54Tad Eggleston: Don't we discuss?
- 8:56Tyler Johnson: I'm pretty sure I'm the first one up.
- 8:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, some new-to-order books, and I think you are up first, Tyler.
- 9:03Tyler Johnson: This works great. So, Tad went through a ton of work putting together a.
- 9:08Tad Eggleston: really wasn't.
- 9:09Tyler Johnson: it wasn't. It looks cool.
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: No, it's mostly cut and pasting, though I do just notice that I did make a… if we post this video, is Baby Garfield number 1, not Baby Garfield number exclamation point?
- 9:25Phil: starting to trend.
- 9:26Tyler Johnson: Yep. Alright, so it's Baby Garfield number one. Meet the tiny troublemaker before he became the lasagna-loving legend. A baby's big little moment… a baby's big little moments are some of the most special and cherished experiences across
- 9:44Tyler Johnson: dating… doting parents, pet parents included. Join this sassy but oh-so-adorable baby Garfield in navigating a series of universal firsts. In this positivi… positivity…
- 9:58Tyler Johnson: silly new comic series, perfect for Garfield lovers, feline fanatics, and readers of all ages. Oh, you see what they did there with the little cat puns? This is going to be, from Grace Ellis, Michael Northrop, and Asia Simone, and, Rob, Justice.
- 10:18Tyler Johnson: And, final order cutoff is February 9th, it will be in stores March 18th.
- 10:25Tad Eggleston: from Kaboom.
- 10:26Tyler Johnson: Oh, didn't I say Boom Kaboom?
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 10:31Tad Eggleston: Dead teenagers.
- 10:33Tad Eggleston: Number one, there's no escaping high school. Since 1997, five friends have been trapped in the ultimate nightmare, as a mysterious entity forces them to relive their first prom night over again.
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: And over again. And re-kills them in new and increasingly insane ways each time. Don't get any ideas, Phil, for Die. No, I do not. I do not want to relive prom.
- 11:00Tad Eggleston: Particularly not a horror prom. They dress up, they party, they make out, and no matter what they try to change, they always die.
- 11:08Tad Eggleston: Until now.
- 11:09Tad Eggleston: Something is about to break the cycle that has kept Alicia, JT, Ryder, Brandy, and their group of friends locked in a bizarre purgatory beyond all understanding, but what they find on the other side will be the most disturbing revelation of all. This is from Jude Ellison S. Doyle.
- 11:27Tad Eggleston: With art by Caitlin Yarsky. Final order cutoff is February 23rd, in stores March 18th from Onei Press.
- 11:38Phil: Next up, there's Gru, the prophecy, number 1, from the living legends Sergio Argones and Marc Evanier. Gru and Ruferto travel far over the land and across an ocean to get away from those who fear Gru and his infamous bad luck.
- 11:53Phil: Our hungry pair of adventurers seems to be running toward catastrophe, though. The priestess Sibilia has visions of terror after terror arriving to her village, with only Gru also arriving to seemingly save her townspeople.
- 12:07Phil: Sergio Argones and Mark Evanier deliver another Wild Grew ride with Eisner-winning lettering by Stan Sakai in exquisite colors by Carrie Strachan.
- 12:18Phil: That's gonna be a final word cutoff of February 23rd, in stores April 1st, from Dark Horse Comics.
- 12:27Tyler Johnson: Alright, I was really excited for this one. This is Lobo number one. We got a Lobo series back, guys. The main… the main man's back, baby, and his ride is a motorcycle. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 12:39Tyler Johnson: His ride is a motorcycle that moves at the speed of sound, but only if that sound is a rippin' guitar solo, and you better hop on before he leaves you in the dust with all the bastiches he's frigged.
- 12:52Tyler Johnson: bragged for money or convenience. The Eisner-nominated creative team that brought you a fantastic parody of Adolescents in the Midwest.
- 13:01Tyler Johnson: The story of an artist who embraces darkness a little too closely, and the tale of a gunslinger with too much grit to stay buried brings you a classic yarn… yarn spun in the star-kissed threads of the
- 13:14Tyler Johnson: Cosmic DC Universe. It's a gut-soaked path from DCKO to the end of the universe, where Lobo is going to scratch his name and number in the source wall with a cool knife. Don't miss the Mayhem special guests, or
- 13:30Tyler Johnson: Tasty, tasty continuity?
- 13:33Tyler Johnson: Don't you do it. Let's see here, February 23rd is final order cutoff. It'll be in stores March 18th, and I forgot to mention, this is Scotty Young.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: And Jorge Corona.
- 13:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and, Jorge Corona, and, from DC Comics.
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: Narco number one.
- 13:56Tad Eggleston: Marcus Westphal has a rare form of narcolepsy. When he gets excited, he passes out.
- 14:02Tad Eggleston: He's adapted. Homebound life, a harmless infatuation with the girl next door, but when he witnesses her murder and collapses, he becomes suspect number one. Now he must leave his apartment to pursue a killer.
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: This is from our dear friend Doug Wagner and Daniel Hilliard, in stores March 4th, final order cutoff, February 9th from Image Comics. I cannot wait for the insanity.
- 14:32Tyler Johnson: It'll be cool.
- 14:34Phil: Right, then there's Tigris Island. A group of down-on-their-luck actresses are kidnapped to an island prison run by a sadistic female warden. Working together is their only chance of escape, but trust issues abound. Action-adventure inspired by exploitation films. Ridiculously fun, seriously sexy. From, kindlyn and…
- 14:54Tad Eggleston: Patrick, Kendland, and EPHK, I think?
- 14:57Phil: That's a final order cutoff of February 16th, and stores March 11th from Image Comics.
- 15:05Tad Eggleston: See, see, like, there's… we still have, what's the word I'm looking for?
- 15:10Phil: Kings Iron?
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: Bugs in the system, yeah, still have bugs in the system.
- 15:16Tad Eggleston: Some… some graphic novels, all the cameras in my room.
- 15:22Tad Eggleston: Razor-sharp short stories from the greatest contemporary comic stylists
- 15:27Tad Eggleston: In all the cameras in my room, Michael DeForge's hilarious and horny approach to comics fiction never disappoints. In figure skating, a star athlete's impossible feats captivate the world.
- 15:37Tad Eggleston: Turning a simple skater's rotation into a catalyst for national paralysis. While in Holiday Special, a narrator tells us about his favorite Christian holiday special that bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain bald-headed boy and his dog, classic.
- 15:53Tad Eggleston: No matter the conceit, characters in all the cameras in my room stretch and flatten and spiral around each other and burrow deep into the folds of a reader's brain. This is for Michael DeForge at Drawn and Quarterly.
- 16:09Tad Eggleston: Final air cutoff is February 9th, in stores on April 9th.
- 16:17Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 16:18Phil: Oh, that's you?
- 16:19Tyler Johnson: This is me! Beat everyone up.
- 16:22Tyler Johnson: Written by Lan Pitts, and art by Joe Hunter. Listen up, this is the fisticuff-filled tale of Princess Hylia of Terragher.
- 16:33Tyler Johnson: A natural-born fighter since childhood, Helia must head out into the wider world when her soon-to-be husband is groom-napped on their wedding day by the atrocious ape and would-be conqueror, Gogo.
- 16:48Tyler Johnson: But what does a sheltered princess know of the other realms? Well, not a whole lot. Luckily, Hylia is joined by her only and only friend and bodyguard, the Ice Witch, Sidra.
- 17:01Tyler Johnson: Together, the pair will brave the deserts of Flatera, the blizzards of Frosterra, you get the idea. Final order cut off February 23rd, and this'll be in shops March 18th from Mad Cave.
- 17:18Phil: Alright, this is the Book of Murmurs from Candace Perwin. Not all stories are spells, but all spells are stories. Thus begins the Wisdom of the Book of Murmurs, a storybook Little Moon's mother reads to her at bedtime.
- 17:34Phil: But one day, her parents are slain by the frightful Schneck, and the book is stolen by the mischievous Catholic Church.
- 17:41Tad Eggleston: Shank.
- 17:42Phil: Shank, my bad. Stolen by the mischievous catwitch, these words will guide the girl on her quest to piece her world back together. It's gonna be, final or cut off February 2nd, in stores March 18th from Fanta Graphics.
- 17:59Tad Eggleston: And check out my recent discussion with Eric Reynolds, the VP and co-publisher of Fanta Graphics.
- 18:05Tad Eggleston: That was a fun one.
- 18:08Phil: This one is certainly a fun title. He Rolled Me Up Like a Grilled Squid by Yoshiharu Tsugi, a manga icon's most perplexing, transgressive, and astounding work of horror and surrealism by the mid-70s.
- 18:23Phil: Sugi Yoshiharu was a man changed by circumstance, something his work from 1975 to 1981 boldly reveals. The confusion and mental illness simmering beneath the surface of his more surreal works come to a rolling boil, reaching an unsettling and horrific crescendo in a series of nightmarish delusions.
- 18:44Phil: Rolled Me Up Like a Grilled Squid captures a mid-career author taking stock of his anxieties and suspicions while connecting the dots between his seemingly monstrous present and his complicated past. Translated by Ryan Holmberg. It's gonna be a final or a cutoff February 2nd, in stores April 1st for John and Porter. That sounds fantastic.
- 19:04Tad Eggleston: And I think it was a monotonous present.
- 19:07Tad Eggleston: Not a monstrous present.
- 19:10Phil: I've got monsters on the mind today.
- 19:12Tyler Johnson: Either way, monotonous does look like monstrous a little bit.
- 19:17Tyler Johnson: Alright, Human Nature from Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel and Jeff Welch.
- 19:23Tyler Johnson: With art by Martin Mrazzo, meet Duke, once just an ordinary nobody, now an ego-driven billionaire, chicken magnate with nearly limitless wealth and power.
- 19:35Tyler Johnson: But even endless fortune has limits, and Duke is obsessed with breaking the final barrier.
- 19:40Tyler Johnson: Death itself. Can he buy the key to defy death? Or has his unchecked ambition finally gone too far?
- 19:48Tyler Johnson: Overflowing with twisted humor, surreal adventures, and dazzling visuals, human nature, hurdles readers into a bizarre yet unsettling familiar future, confronting unimaginable obstacles at every turn.
- 20:04Tyler Johnson: This sounds great. Final order cut off February 9th. We'll be in shops March 8th… March 25th from Abrams.
- 20:13Tad Eggleston: Lights of Nideroy, from Marcelo Quintanilla.
- 20:19Tad Eggleston: In 1950s Brazil, somewhere by the beach, not far from Rio, Helsio, a young and promising soccer player and his friend Noel, spot someone fishing with dynamite. They decide to take a boat and steal some of the dead fish to make some money.
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: The boat trip turns into a perilous journey as the two thieves embark on an adventure that will challenge their friendship.
- 20:40Tad Eggleston: Inspired by the life of Marcella, Marcello Quintanilla's father.
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: Hercio Quintanilla. This graphic novel is both a suspenseful thriller and breathtaking story about friendship.
- 20:53Tad Eggleston: Final order cut off of February 16th in stores April 1st from Fanta Graphics.
- 21:00Tad Eggleston: And now, let's, let's check out some collections.
- 21:04Tyler Johnson: Alright, The End League, from Rick Remender, art by Matt Broom, Eric Canete, Andy McDonald.
- 21:13Tyler Johnson: The New York Times best-selling hit series collected in one gorgeous volume.
- 21:18Tyler Johnson: When gods fall and heroes fail, who saves the world? In a devastated world ruled by supervillains, the last surviving heroes embark on a desperate quest to find the mythic hammer of Thor.
- 21:31Tyler Johnson: Believing it to hold the key to restoring hope to humanity. This has a final order come off of February 2nd, will be in shops March 11th from Image.
- 21:43Tad Eggleston: The Ends from David and Maria Lapham.
- 21:47Tad Eggleston: It's 1985, and Jennifer End and Angelo Rodriguez are deeply in love.
- 21:53Tad Eggleston: But Jennifer can't reveal their relationship to her family. The ends are considered by some to be traditional.
- 22:02Tad Eggleston: But to most, they're known as intolerant, discriminatory, and bigoted.
- 22:06Tyler Johnson: Her brother, Jack.
- 22:08Tad Eggleston: is the worst of the bunch, a full-blown hardcore skinhead. When Jennifer travels to Oceanside, a retirement home for veterans, to be with Angelo under the guise of visiting her grandparents, Jack discovers their relationship.
- 22:21Tad Eggleston: Jack is crushed by the betrayal and decides it's time to take a stand.
- 22:26Tad Eggleston: This was so fucking good. David Lapham just…
- 22:31Tad Eggleston: He's ridiculous, he's… he's ridiculous. February 9th, final order cut off, in stores March 11th. This is actually a colored version, even, which means that even though I have my nice hardcover, I might…
- 22:43Tad Eggleston: pick it up, because there's been some interesting colorization of Lapum stuff lately. I forget who the colorist on this is, but it's someone who does good stuff.
- 22:54Phil: Alright, then there's The Voice Said Kill by Cy Spurrier and Vanessa Del Rey. Fargo meets Deliverance in this trippy fever dream thriller, juxtaposing gorgeously pastel sunsets and vibrant hues of the wilderness with shadowy nightmares of dark deeds.
- 23:09Phil: The wet heart of the Louisiana Bayou. Alligator poachers prowl the mud bug mire.
- 23:16Phil: Park ranger, heavily pregnant, raises a hateful mug of moonshine with a criminal matriarch, and one deadly son of a bitch out of his mind on shrooms and retribution.
- 23:26Phil: loads his rifle for the human hunt and screams down the stars. That is a final word cutoff of February 16th, in stores March 25th, over at Image Comics. That was, yeah, definitely a hell of a series. I do need to reread it all at once, but it is damn good.
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 23:44Tyler Johnson: Looks good, yeah.
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: Some final order cutoffs… We have…
- 23:55Tad Eggleston: All the Living from Roman Murdoch at Fanographics in stores February 25th. Archie X, The Army of Darkness, number 1, from Eric…
- 24:04Tad Eggleston: Burnham and Bill Galvin at Dynamite, in stores February 4th. Black Moon Ritual.
- 24:11Tad Eggleston: The Protopias Collection from Itasha Womack and Aletha Martinez at AWA, Future Fic, in stores February 25th. Daredevil No. 1 from Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbel. Garbit at Marvel, in stores March 25th. Dork.
- 24:27Tad Eggleston: Number one, from Brett Bean and Jean-Francois.
- 24:30Tad Eggleston: Belu?
- 24:32Tad Eggleston: From Image Comics, in stores February 4th, First Freedom, the story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth, from Angelique Rocher, Alvin Epps, Millicent Monroe.
- 24:44Tad Eggleston: Bex Glendening from Oni Press in stores February 4th, and Medidagos from Berenice, Motre des Narbonne at Drawn and Quarterly in stores on March
- 24:59Tad Eggleston: 4th.
- 25:00Tad Eggleston: Still crowdfunding, we have…
- 25:02Tad Eggleston: Slice of Life, an anime character brought to life from Cat Kalemia and Phil Falco, Valeria Perry at Lifeline Comics on Kickstarter through January 8th.
- 25:11Tad Eggleston: And from Chile to the edge of imagination, Jodorowski and Rodriguez. At Humanoids on Kickstarter on January 14th, a dual Kickstarter with Cosm Pirates from Alejandro Jodorosky and Pete Woods, and the Chasm of Resurrection from Gabriel Rodriguez and Haraji. And if you go full in for the $150, two hardcovers.
- 25:36Tad Eggleston: Plus, the… the original short story comic from… from,
- 25:43Tad Eggleston: Jodorowski and Gabriel Rodriguez, then you'll be like me and a sucker. Anyway, moving on…
- 25:55Tad Eggleston: Humble Bundle still has Adventure Time, $18 for 25 items for the Hero Initiative and Book Industry Charitable Foundation.
- 26:05Tad Eggleston: through January 8th.
- 26:09Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: Three amazing books.
- 26:14Tad Eggleston: This week, I mean, we kinda… we kinda knew how it was gonna…
- 26:19Tad Eggleston: Play out, just because, there were 4 books.
- 26:23Tad Eggleston: Coming out that I even had interest in reading, and I still haven't managed to get my hands on a copy of Mary Sue number 1, so I haven't read 2 or 3.
- 26:34Tad Eggleston: But I did read… Farrell number 19, is it? Was… was really, really good.
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: Tin Can Society number 9 wrapped up the series and was really, really good. Lucky Devils number 6, was…
- 26:50Tad Eggleston: I'm not gonna say really, really good, but I think that's more,
- 26:55Tad Eggleston: a function of where in the series it is. It's the… it's the sixth of nine, so it's kind of that… that turn.
- 27:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 27:04Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean? So, it's gonna be essential, and, like, it will read great, but, like, as an individual comic, it's…
- 27:17Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 27:17Tad Eggleston: It's not all that it might, might be.
- 27:21Tad Eggleston: So yeah, that's my, 3 amazing books this week, because they're just… Light Weekend.
- 27:28Tyler Johnson: It was a short week, man, or a small week.
- 27:31Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 27:32Tad Eggleston: So, Phil, it sounds like your walk is almost as interesting as my three comics.
- 27:39Phil: Yeah, it's, it's, you know, it's not a whole lot going on, didn't, didn't, didn't get out to the, to the shop this week either. I don't think anything I was reading was coming out, so…
- 27:48Phil: You know, yeah.
- 27:51Phil: Yeah, I, I, I can, I can tell you that, hmm…
- 27:58Phil: I, I have good news and bad news, in, in the, MLB25 department.
- 28:06Phil: Yeah. So the bad news is that I still need to get in… The good news is…
- 28:13Phil: That, it'll… the switch will show up with the game already on there for you.
- 28:17Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay, so I won't have to load it.
- 28:20Phil: Yeah, the digital deluxe Edition was on sale for 10 bucks.
- 28:24Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 28:24Phil: Down from 100, so.
- 28:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 28:27Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:29Phil: So, yeah, it was one of those rows.
- 28:30Tad Eggleston: So I even got the digital deluxe version.
- 28:33Phil: Digital Deluxe.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: That's the one that I buy for myself, so that makes me really happy.
- 28:37Phil: Heck yeah, so, you know…
- 28:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, I'm literally running out of things to do on the last 3.
- 28:43Tad Eggleston: Versions, because…
- 28:46Phil: The last 3 years.
- 28:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I pretty much wrapped up the stuff that I could do on 22, and now I'm…
- 28:52Tad Eggleston: kind of going through, and there's… there's a handful of stuff that I hadn't done on 23, and I…
- 28:57Tad Eggleston: had literally done pretty much everything on 24, getting ready for 25, only to discover that it wouldn't play on my PlayStation 4, which made me really, really sad. Oh, yeah. And I didn't play any baseball for, like, 6 months, because I was really, really sad.
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: And then I started playing 22 again, because that was the one that I'd played the least of.
- 29:17Tyler Johnson: They bring you out of your sadness, out of your funk?
- 29:21Tad Eggleston: It did a little bit, because, you know, I like playing baseball.
- 29:25Tad Eggleston: But when I finally get to play 25, I'll get to play with Oscar Charleston.
- 29:30Phil: I don't get to play with…
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: Cool Papa Belle, and, like…
- 29:36Tad Eggleston: they haven't been on previous versions. I was a little disappointed, because I may, like, sometimes read about stuff. Normally, they have all of…
- 29:48Tad Eggleston: all of the new Hall of Famers, they'll do something for?
- 29:53Tad Eggleston: And… this year, they didn't. Ichiro didn't get a Hall of Fame card. And… because that's when I really went, oh, I want this, because Ichiro's in the Hall of Fame, and I haven't gotten to play with Ichiro yet.
- 30:06Tad Eggleston: I still won't get to play with each hero, so… hopefully next year's.
- 30:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 30:12Tyler Johnson: We'll get the 26th one.
- 30:13Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 30:15Tad Eggleston: So, One Piece Race. Tyler, did you read any One Piece this week?
- 30:22Tyler Johnson: No, but I did watch some a little bit while I was working at the store.
- 30:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 30:27Tyler Johnson: I have no idea where it was at.
- 30:29Tyler Johnson: Had it on.
- 30:31Tad Eggleston: Just rub it in. Just rub it in, because I didn't read or watch any One Piece.
- 30:36Tyler Johnson: Okay. That's funny. No, I had… I absorbed it by osmosis from some kid who was…
- 30:43Tad Eggleston: I mean, and I'm sad, because, like, we've just gotten to, like, the part where they start dealing with racism and slavery in the past.
- 30:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And it's, like, getting really topical in really cool ways, and… I gotta catch up. It's been really, really busy, so I'm still on Chapter 626.
- 31:00Tyler Johnson: 626, where am I? 626.
- 31:03Phil: Probably in the 300s, I don't know.
- 31:05Tad Eggleston: I think you were in the 400s before you left.
- 31:07Tyler Johnson: 4. Okay, four. Then that's where I'm at.
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: You might… you might have even cleared 5, I don't remember.
- 31:14Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna go back and look.
- 31:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we'd have to… I'd have to go… I'm not gonna go look at the notes right now.
- 31:20Tyler Johnson: I could probably figure it out, but…
- 31:22Tad Eggleston: Well, you just have to pull up your app and see where it's at.
- 31:27Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's true. My iPad's wrong here somewhere.
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: So, Phil, did you read any manga?
- 31:33Phil: I… I did not, unfortunately.
- 31:36Tad Eggleston: You know what I did read this week, though? Because I did… because there was so little other stuff coming out, I did… I did take the time to do some reading that I hadn't…
- 31:45Tad Eggleston: gotten around to. First, because it's part of my next American Nature Presents column, and…
- 31:54Tad Eggleston: and he's such a weird dude that it's the part of it that I have had trouble writing. I read some more Jodorowski. I read El Topo.
- 32:04Tad Eggleston: and… er… son of El Topo, rather, which is, like, the sequel to his movie, which I watched the movie a while ago, too. And I read a couple more volumes of The Bouncer.
- 32:15Tad Eggleston: And, like, his westerns are as funky and weird and cool as his sci-fi, and, like, it's weird to, like, talk about westerns and sci-fi as being the same…
- 32:29Tad Eggleston: philosophical, surreal… I mean, you remember when we read The Inkl, Tyler? Yeah. Imagine that in a Western.
- 32:36Tyler Johnson: Yep, exactly, yep.
- 32:39Tad Eggleston: So, I read some Jodorowski, and I also read some, Married Life with Archie.
- 32:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's good.
- 32:50Tad Eggleston: Alright, some married life with Archie.
- 32:52Tad Eggleston: So, so, yeah. And I need to… I have… I have lined up to read.
- 32:59Tad Eggleston: Kelly Thompson's run on Sabrina.
- 33:04Tad Eggleston: The teenage witch.
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: So… gonna have to… Do that soon.
- 33:12Tad Eggleston: Sounds good. Most of that doesn't have anything to do with one piece.
- 33:16Tyler Johnson: Yo, but…
- 33:19Phil: But what if… Why don't…
- 33:21Tyler Johnson: What if it did?
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: Why don't we, jump into…
- 33:26Tad Eggleston: our… our best of 2025. This is…
- 33:29Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 33:30Tad Eggleston: Part 2.
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: This is where we make up categories, so I kind of feel like I like the older work that we discovered slash rediscovered enough.
- 33:42Phil: Huh.
- 33:42Tad Eggleston: that I want to keep it for next year.
- 33:44Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: be the single issue.
- 33:46Phil: I've decided on the single issue.
- 33:49Tad Eggleston: Maybe the single issue. So we might be down to only one rotating category.
- 33:54Phil: Okay.
- 33:54Tad Eggleston: That's all I'm saying.
- 33:55Phil: I'm kind of, I mean, I also like those categories as, you know.
- 33:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 34:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so, so…
- 34:03Phil: the guaranteed to be rotating category again, because I feel like every year has a different, like, last year it made sense to have the animal. There were so many good animal-related comics, right?
- 34:15Tyler Johnson: We had animals here on Ferrell.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: Alright, this year, it felt like it was a big monster year, so… so Hear There Be Monsters is our… is our category.
- 34:25Tyler Johnson: I gotta be, honest, I took this kind of loosely, because mine don't have literal monsters. They don't have literal monsters in them, but…
- 34:33Tad Eggleston: But, but you took it less loosely than Phil.
- 34:36Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah, yeah, no, I… well, so, I mean, I saw… I saw what,
- 34:40Phil: what, you know, you picked the traditional monster books, and they all sound great, but it's… it's one of those things where I realized that, like, I didn't want… I didn't want too many repeats of what I read, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 34:52Phil: it was one of those where I had to think outside the box. This first one, you know, I guess part of it's because
- 34:59Phil: You know, monstrosity and monsters are something that's important to me.
- 35:03Phil: And, the way I think about them is… is less that they're about things that are scary or evil, and just more about representations of the unknown. So I wanted the first, the first, Hear There Be Monsters award to go out to all of the awesome comics that I haven't even heard of yet.
- 35:21Phil: Just because there are so many out there that I have to know.
- 35:26Tad Eggleston: This is how Phil is very different from you, Tyler. You're very literal. Phil's like, how can I take this and completely not answer the question while still philosophically saying that I'm answering the question?
- 35:39Phil: is an answer to the question, it's celebrating… it's celebrating continuing to find new series, you know? And also recognizing…
- 35:46Tyler Johnson: Creative. Isn't that what this is?
- 35:48Tad Eggleston: Their show is, though?
- 35:50Phil: Well, yeah…
- 35:50Tad Eggleston: That's not a best of 25.
- 35:54Tyler Johnson: I guess it's, it's also… That's the best of all ways.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: The best of all time.
- 35:59Phil: You know, it sounded… it sounded more fun.
- 36:01Tad Eggleston: I mean, I mean, that could… that could be your entire reintroduction list.
- 36:08Phil: Reintroduction list. What's that?
- 36:11Tad Eggleston: That's the third one. That's the next one.
- 36:13Phil: Polar work that we discovered or rediscovered.
- 36:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: True.
- 36:17Phil: Yeah, yeah, but, like, there's that… but I'm talking about, I'm talking about, like, even now, like, knowing that…
- 36:22Tad Eggleston: This is… in the year of monsters, Phil couldn't come up with 3 monster books, because he's a.
- 36:28Phil: Why? What's right now.
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: I'm just saying.
- 36:30Phil: I'm saying I didn't… I didn't want to throw in a book, like, I didn't want to mention, oh, I'm going to mention Lazarus for the 16th time, because billionaires are monsters, you know? Like, that's… that's…
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: You could have…
- 36:41Tyler Johnson: Almost.
- 36:41Tad Eggleston: Scott…
- 36:42Tyler Johnson: You have Hoopla.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: You have Hoopla. You could have read one of the 17 Godzilla books that came out this year that were…
- 36:50Tyler Johnson: spot.
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:51Tyler Johnson: There were a lot.
- 36:52Phil: I mean, Godzilla Heist? I think… was that this year? Was that this year? No, I think it was last year was the Valentine's Day special. I'm… I'm…
- 37:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the Valentine… no? No!
- 37:04Phil: I did read that. What's that?
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: That was this year. Yeah. I got a… yeah, yeah.
- 37:08Phil: I… I apologize, because…
- 37:10Tad Eggleston: See?
- 37:10Phil: I picked that up.
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: this!
- 37:12Phil: what… I gotta look that up right now. That doesn't feel like it was this year. That feels like it was last year.
- 37:16Tyler Johnson: Alright. So, you did that for your.
- 37:19Phil: First pick, what's your second pick?
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, we all…
- 37:23Tad Eggleston: Round robin, man. Oh, okay. I get to go now. We go in alphabetical order.
- 37:28Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 37:29Tad Eggleston: Phil Tad Tyler.
- 37:32Tad Eggleston: Learn to spell. You have a comic shop now. You need to know how to alphabet.
- 37:36Tyler Johnson: I gotta alphabetize everything.
- 37:38Phil: the dude with initials PU is at the top of the alphabet around here.
- 37:42Tad Eggleston: I never thought about that, that sucks, dude.
- 37:45Phil: My parents didn't name me Peter because they didn't want me to be made fun of, so they really, they really thought outside the box on that one.
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah, my top monster book is a, is, is a hilarious swords and sorcery, feminist swords and sorcery book called Babs from Garth Ennis and Jason.
- 38:04Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 38:04Tad Eggleston: Rose and ahoy.
- 38:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah. It's just fucking…
- 38:08Tad Eggleston: Great.
- 38:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 38:11Tyler Johnson: That's awesome, I got… I'm gonna have to check it out, because I'm a really big Garth Ennis fan, but I went with someone that you're a fan of, Tad, Tyler Boss.
- 38:19Tad Eggleston: Though, I do have one quick thing. Wasn't this part of your… one of your lists last week?
- 38:27Phil: Gasp.
- 38:28Tyler Johnson: What's it?
- 38:30Phil: I'm pretty sure it was.
- 38:31Tad Eggleston: He doesn't even remember!
- 38:35Tyler Johnson: No. Check the tape? It was.
- 38:37Phil: Yes, it was. Yeah, we're covering the tape.
- 38:39Tyler Johnson: Yes, it was.
- 38:41Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 38:41Tad Eggleston: Go ahead.
- 38:42Tyler Johnson: But anyway, he'll do bad things.
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: That's great. You'll do.
- 38:45Tyler Johnson: I loved it. Yeah, Adriano Tortolici was on art, it was just really good.
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: boss writing, yeah. Yeah, it was, it was very good. It was very good.
- 38:55Tyler Johnson: I won't use it again.
- 38:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, it would be a legit miniseries pick.
- 39:02Tyler Johnson: No, I got some… I got a few others for that.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: Okay, okay, it just…
- 39:06Phil: Like it enough?
- 39:06Tad Eggleston: to pick it up.
- 39:07Phil: twice.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, it was a little weird that you picked it as the nonfiction, but, I mean…
- 39:12Phil: No.
- 39:13Tyler Johnson: I didn't pick for nonfiction! Whoa!
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: No, no, you didn't pick anything for nonfiction, that's where the joke was, Tom.
- 39:20Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay, I'm like, look, I'm…
- 39:23Tyler Johnson: I'm a little bit stressed lately, but I do know that that's… fiction, yeah.
- 39:28Tad Eggleston: Well, you think it's fiction, but really, it was your own story. He was writing about you, you didn't…
- 39:35Tyler Johnson: I didn't even know that it was me being written about.
- 39:39Phil: All the bad things you don't even remember doing. Right.
- 39:44Tad Eggleston: So, your top pick.
- 39:47Phil: What's that?
- 39:48Tad Eggleston: your top pick.
- 39:49Phil: No, I didn't.
- 39:51Tyler Johnson: No, Phil, this is your top pick, because you didn't pick a top one.
- 39:54Tad Eggleston: Oh, this is…
- 39:55Phil: No, I just…
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: This is your third pick.
- 39:58Phil: No, no, we skipped… we skipped the second one. I'm messing with you. This is… I don't like… I don't know about 22 Panels After Dark anymore, guys. I'm too… I'm too easily bullied. My… my number 2 pick… my number 2 pick is gonna be.
- 40:11Tad Eggleston: Your number 3 pick wasn't anything, but okay, your number 2 pick.
- 40:15Phil: My number 3 pick… it was existential. Anyway.
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: Well, but I'm reading this here, and so is your number 2 pick, in parentheses.
- 40:27Phil: Yeah.
- 40:28Phil: Yeah. So, so, so I actually, I read the first issue of this. I did pick up the first issue of this on a whim.
- 40:34Phil: I like… it says Lost Fantasy, by Kurt Pires, Franklin Jonas, Maxie Dallow, and Mark Dale and Micah Myers over at Image. I read the first issue, I found it very intriguing, but it, it, it was literally… it was like a Trade Waiter sort of thing. It's like, okay, this.
- 40:51Tad Eggleston: I've actually read the first three. Okay. But I need to read the trade.
- 40:57Tyler Johnson: What's the current one? I just saw it on my shelf, but I don't remember what number it is.
- 41:01Phil: 5 or 6?
- 41:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 41:03Phil: Yeah, so it's good. If the first trade isn't out already, then it is soon. But yeah, so, you know, it was one… it's just, again, it's me finding a way to celebrate a book that looks cool, that I want to read, that without, you know, re-tapping the well.
- 41:18Phil: Too many times. And it is a book that has monsters.
- 41:22Phil: Yeah.
- 41:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it is. It is.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: 8 is coming out in February, 7 comes out in January, so 6 is the one that just hit the shelves.
- 41:36Tad Eggleston: Secondly.
- 41:37Phil: So, Tad, what's your… what's your number two, model?
- 41:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, and Volume 1 hit the shelves on… on November 19th, so, like…
- 41:44Phil: Well, there we go.
- 41:45Tad Eggleston: For Trade Raider, you should have the Trade Raider.
- 41:48Phil: I might have… it's… well, but that also requires spending money. It will be…
- 41:53Tad Eggleston: But, like, I have only read the single issues on Hoopla, so I'm pretty certain the trade is also on Hoopla.
- 41:59Phil: Exactly, yeah.
- 42:02Phil: I just… I… I… this is… this is why… That's my…
- 42:06Tad Eggleston: My number… my number 2 book,
- 42:09Tad Eggleston: is… is Godzilla vs. America?
- 42:14Tad Eggleston: there were, I think, 4 issues of this so far this year. You had Godzilla, the LET, LET… I mean…
- 42:20Tad Eggleston: leading off was Godzilla vs. Chicago, and it had both Tim Seeley and Carolyn Cash doing… which, I mean, that just set the tone right there. It's like, oh, so we're gonna have… we're gonna have both mainstream people and, like, alternative comics people fucking A.
- 42:39Tad Eggleston: And it literally ended with Godzilla going off to Indiana, and the main characters saying, fuck Indiana. So, I mean, you just can't get better than that.
- 42:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, and then… then Dave Baker brought footnotes to the LA stories, and… and Jesse Lonergan had one of the Boston stories, and…
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I just loved my Godzilla vs. America.
- 43:07Tyler Johnson: They were good.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: It's really… it was hard, actually, not to make Godzilla vs. America my top Monster Book.
- 43:17Tad Eggleston: this.
- 43:19Tyler Johnson: Well, you put yours…
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: But there's…
- 43:21Tyler Johnson: a good reason.
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: Recent.
- 43:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah, your next one was a big one for me, for sure, but, my next one is Far Down Below, from Chris Condon in, is it Gage? Shaw? Geggy. Geggy Shaw, and Nathan Kemp from Mad Cave.
- 43:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that was really good. I waited for the trade for that one.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: So I literally just read it, because the trade's so good.
- 43:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: It was so good, though.
- 43:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 43:50Tad Eggleston: This is why Chris Condon all over the place was my wild card, because, like…
- 43:55Tad Eggleston: This was maybe the least of his books this year, and it was still that fucking good.
- 44:01Tyler Johnson: It was really good. I mean, I love the whole story, you know, of the house, everything.
- 44:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 44:10Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 44:11Tyler Johnson: Alright, Phil, let's get to it. Your…
- 44:15Phil: Oh, my number one?
- 44:17Tad Eggleston: I'm bringing that one.
- 44:17Phil: for Hear Me Monsters is, is, FML by Kelly Hsu, David Lopez, Chris Peter, and Clayton Coles at, Dark Horse. Yeah, it's, it's one that I really, really loved.
- 44:31Tad Eggleston: Fucking good.
- 44:32Phil: Her son just turned into a weird, fuzzy monster.
- 44:36Tad Eggleston: Wolf.
- 44:37Phil: Yeah. Well, he doesn't even seem wolf-eyed.
- 44:39Tad Eggleston: of…
- 44:40Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:40Tad Eggleston: Kind of, kind of a werewolf.
- 44:42Phil: He's a big fuzzy guy. You know, he's something alright, but .
- 44:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 44:46Phil: You know, so… so yeah, it's… it's… it's the way…
- 44:49Tad Eggleston: He's like a cross between a werewolf and Grimace.
- 44:53Phil: Well, he's not purple. That's just… Grimace is a little too horrific here, you know? I wouldn't, I would,
- 44:58Phil: won't worry about that guy. But, but yeah, you know, it's… it's a representation of monstrosity that, definitely speaks to me, and, you know, it's reflective of how I'd want to treat monsters in my own work. So, yeah, that's why it's my top spot.
- 45:12Tad Eggleston: Well, and similarly, Orla from John Lee's and Sally Cantorino takes my top spot, because the ick…
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: Is the coolest monster ever.
- 45:24Tyler Johnson: I've got, I've got, Orla coming up later in the conversation.
- 45:29Tyler Johnson: Didn't I?
- 45:30Tad Eggleston: I thought, I thought it came.
- 45:30Tyler Johnson: Maybe I.
- 45:31Tad Eggleston: time for you.
- 45:32Tyler Johnson: Oh, last time, yep.
- 45:33Phil: Oh, no, it's so…
- 45:34Tad Eggleston: Oh, it's so incredible.
- 45:35Tyler Johnson: Nope, it's here, it's here. Yep.
- 45:38Tad Eggleston: Oh, so yeah, you're getting all over the Orla this year.
- 45:45Tad Eggleston: Be careful, Tyler.
- 45:48Tad Eggleston: Because if you're not nice to her.
- 45:52Tad Eggleston: It won't go well for you.
- 45:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 45:55Tyler Johnson: Can you imagine being… being the guy that likes her? That guy when he discovers, like, what's going on? He's like.
- 46:01Tad Eggleston: He's pretty awesome. The fact that he just, like, kicked back, he's pretty awesome.
- 46:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 46:09Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:10Tyler Johnson: Do you got Orla… Exquisite Corpses from James Tiny and IV and Michael Walsh.
- 46:17Tyler Johnson: This has been… this has been fun.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: It has. I'm a couple issues behind.
- 46:24Tyler Johnson: Okay, then I won't spoil, which… which…
- 46:26Tad Eggleston: I…
- 46:28Tad Eggleston: I totally love the whole concept of, like, these crazed killers getting dropped in a small town to duke out who gets to rule the world for the next 5 years.
- 46:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, right, so these political leaders, they, they hire…
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: Business leaders.
- 46:46Tyler Johnson: Business leaders, yeah.
- 46:47Tad Eggleston: Way more business leaders than… I mean, I know that we… we…
- 46:51Tyler Johnson: It's a… it's a… it's a dogfight, but it's in… but it's with serial killers, you know?
- 46:56Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:57Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 46:58Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 46:59Tyler Johnson: Oh, butts. It's…
- 47:01Tad Eggleston: Pretty ridiculous. It's been great.
- 47:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 47:04Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 47:06Tad Eggleston: So, our, our… another new category, but one that we like enough that I think it's coming back next year, an older work that we either discovered or rediscovered this year.
- 47:19Tyler Johnson: Hmm.
- 47:20Tad Eggleston: And Phil actually literally just changed his, and he's not actually…
- 47:26Tad Eggleston: it's not that old of a work, because I think… I think, like, the number that he's putting up there is, like, maybe 2 years old, but I'll allow it.
- 47:35Phil: Okay. You know, it's still… it didn't come out this year. This is the designated…
- 47:41Tad Eggleston: That's true. That's true.
- 47:42Phil: It didn't come out this year one. But you know, it was especially…
- 47:46Tad Eggleston: I think there was an issue this year.
- 47:49Phil: Okay.
- 47:49Tad Eggleston: I thought.
- 47:50Phil: Okay.
- 47:51Phil: I'm not sure which one that was, but…
- 47:54Tad Eggleston: I mean, to be fair, there was an issue in my top book this year, too, so…
- 47:59Phil: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 48:01Tad Eggleston: camp.
- 48:01Phil: you know what happens. But this is… this is PeePee Poo Pooh, by Carolyn Cash over at Silver Sprocket. I picked this up when I visited Portland this year, back in February, number 420, and it was fucking hilarious and magnificent. Oh, yeah. So, it… it was… it was one that, you know.
- 48:19Phil: It's kind of funny, because I remembered one of the other… one of the other one-shots that I picked up there was, Sobek by James Stoko, so I… I probably should have put that in my Hear Me Monsters, but, you know, I didn't think of it fast enough.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:33Phil: That's why I, you know, I had to… I had a last-minute change.
- 48:37Tad Eggleston: Carolyn, we gotta… I still need to get Carolyn on the show. We've talked about it a few times, but we haven't actually pulled it off.
- 48:45Tad Eggleston: She's taking over, Nancy, I think.
- 48:48Phil: Oh, wow.
- 48:49Tad Eggleston: Holy cow. She'd done a fill-in for Olivia… she'd done, like, a week of fill-ins for Olivia James already, but she's the official new…
- 48:59Tad Eggleston: new Nancy artist, I believe, as of the 1st.
- 49:03Phil: just artists, or, do we, like…
- 49:07Tad Eggleston: everything.
- 49:07Phil: Well, yeah, I mean, Olivia James was a pen name, right? For someone? Right.
- 49:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:13Phil: So… Interesting, very interesting.
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah, no, I'm, I'm, I'm definitely looking forward to…
- 49:25Tyler Johnson: So, was… are there actually 420 issues, or was that a one-off?
- 49:30Tad Eggleston: No, no. In no way. I don't know anything about…
- 49:34Tad Eggleston: You've never read Pee Pee Poo Poo?
- 49:36Tad Eggleston: No, you would like pee-pee poo-poo.
- 49:38Phil: Yeah, it's…
- 49:39Tad Eggleston: It's damn far.
- 49:39Phil: It's on Hoopla!
- 49:41Tad Eggleston: Okay, okay. There are four issues. The numbers are, number one.
- 49:45Phil: Number 69, number 420, and number, 80,085.
- 49:51Tad Eggleston: That's awesome. Was the first one actually number one? I don't feel like the first one was number one.
- 49:57Phil: I don't know. I just know that… I just have…
- 50:01Tad Eggleston: She hasn't actually had a number 1 yet.
- 50:03Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 50:04Phil: No, so, okay, so if, if these dates on, on Hoopla are to be believed, issue 69 was, April 4th, 2023,
- 50:17Phil: issue 420 was April 18th, 2023, and then number 1 was August 13th, 2024, and number 80,085 is November 14th.
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: Okay, that's right. There was a number one, it just wasn't… The first issue.
- 50:37Phil: It was… it was the 4th.
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 50:39Phil: Yeah.
- 50:40Tad Eggleston: 420 was actually 20… yeah, 2021, so you're gonna…
- 50:43Phil: Oh, really? Okay.
- 50:44Tad Eggleston: I think she was… I think she was… well, that's when it went up on Hoopla.
- 50:50Tad Eggleston: But when it came out from Silver Sprocket, I think… I wanna say…
- 50:58Tad Eggleston: I want to say $420 she made while she was still in Chicago.
- 51:03Tad Eggleston: She's out in…
- 51:03Phil: There was some Chicago humor there.
- 51:05Tad Eggleston: Alright, yeah.
- 51:07Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, no… Carolyn's… Carolyn's fantastic.
- 51:13Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 51:15Phil: But Tad, what's your, what's your, your third… first… first older.
- 51:21Tad Eggleston: Well, and this is… this is another, tyler needs to come back.
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: Because we need to talk about Volume 10.
- 51:31Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 51:31Tad Eggleston: of… Monstrous.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: Which, I just read also this week, and was so good.
- 51:41Tad Eggleston: This is one of those series that actually defines to me the books that I need to trade weight, because each issue is so dense.
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: that I have a lot of trouble reading it monthly.
- 51:53Phil: Yeah.
- 51:54Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 51:55Tad Eggleston: I read the first trade relatively soon after it came out, and I kind of tried to pick up monthly then, and it just didn't work, and it wound up being years before I read the first book.
- 52:11Tad Eggleston: And then, years before, I actually managed to, like, get caught up after that. Not ever because it wasn't good, but because, like.
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: it's… a commitment.
- 52:28Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 52:30Tad Eggleston: In a way that most comics aren't.
- 52:36Tad Eggleston: And not… not in a bad way.
- 52:39Phil: Yeah, I haven't figured out.
- 52:40Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 52:41Phil: similar experience. I actually was buying it monthly, I think, through, I want to say, issue 30 or 40, but hadn't read it since that first volume, you know, because of the same sort of thing of, oh, I couldn't really read it month to month, and I never sat down to binge through it all.
- 53:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 53:03Tyler Johnson: It's a great series, and I, like I said, yeah, we gotta do number 10.
- 53:07Tyler Johnson: Very soon. We should get that on the calendar.
- 53:12Tyler Johnson: Let's see…
- 53:16Phil: Well, Tyler, what's your, what's your, first pick for rediscovered older work?
- 53:21Tyler Johnson: Have you guys heard of… oh, it's not on my desk, it's on my kitchen table. It's a… it's a…
- 53:27Tyler Johnson: book called Motherfuckers.
- 53:29Phil: I have not heard of this book.
- 53:31Tad Eggleston: I have, because I… I only kickstarted it enough to… have the… the…
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: Well, and we talked about it on the air as well.
- 53:46Tyler Johnson: Yes, yeah.
- 53:47Tad Eggleston: Because when it was kickstarting, I… I… one of the things Magnetic does that I like is they'll let you do, like, a $2 support to open up the…
- 53:59Tad Eggleston: the,
- 54:04Tad Eggleston: what the hell do they call it? The… the…
- 54:09Tad Eggleston: give you access to the add-ons and whatever. So, so, like, you can… you can…
- 54:16Tad Eggleston: You can, you know, commit $2, and then when the thing's funded and whatnot.
- 54:23Tad Eggleston: decide if you're gonna do more, and I wound up, because I knew it was gonna be in comic shops, not actually…
- 54:29Tad Eggleston: doing anything through the… the Kickstarter, but it's… it's been on my…
- 54:35Tad Eggleston: radar since. You've been… you've been reading it? You like it?
- 54:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I have, the first 3… Hardcovers of it.
- 54:44Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 54:44Tyler Johnson: And…
- 54:46Tad Eggleston: Four total.
- 54:47Tyler Johnson: Okay. Or will be.
- 54:48Tad Eggleston: 4 total.
- 54:49Tyler Johnson: I have the first three, and I'm only in the first one right now, and it's… it's good.
- 54:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, isn't it… isn't it, like, both… Written and drawn by Run?
- 55:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 55:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: Ron of Run DMC is a cartoonist.
- 55:08Phil: Wow. Yeah. Holy shit.
- 55:10Tyler Johnson: Let me go grab it quick, and I'll show you what it looks like, Bill. It looks cool.
- 55:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, it's fantastic.
- 55:15Phil: Absolutely incredible.
- 55:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, I definitely need to actually read it.
- 55:24Tad Eggleston: It's just.
- 55:25Phil: Yeah.
- 55:25Tad Eggleston: Ones that, you know…
- 55:29Tad Eggleston: I've known of it for a long time, and then Magnetic put it out, and I'm like, oh, now I really need to do it.
- 55:36Tyler Johnson: This is the Volume.
- 55:38Phil: Awesome.
- 55:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:40Tyler Johnson: It's very graffiti, like, you know, and it's just, it's awesome.
- 55:44Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 55:45Tyler Johnson: It's really cool. Anyway, so I just discovered that recently, and I was kind of like, wow, that's been out for a while. How come I just bought out what this is?
- 55:53Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, really, because it…
- 55:56Tad Eggleston: It was made originally a long time ago, but it hasn't been available until…
- 56:01Phil: Mmm…
- 56:02Tad Eggleston: really recently. It was like…
- 56:04Tyler Johnson: Oh, sick?
- 56:05Tad Eggleston: One of those… it was, like, one of… well, 06 is when it was made, but, like, that version came out this year.
- 56:11Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 56:12Tad Eggleston: And I don't think it's really been available in between.
- 56:16Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 56:17Tad Eggleston: One of those things that was, like…
- 56:20Tad Eggleston: I think it was… and I could be kind of wrong on this, but it feels like…
- 56:26Tad Eggleston: It spent most of the last 20 years being one of those books that lots of people had heard about, and nobody had ever actually
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: Scene?
- 56:36Tyler Johnson: Mmm. Okay.
- 56:38Tad Eggleston: Y-you know what I mean? Yup.
- 56:41Tyler Johnson: Well, well.
- 56:41Tad Eggleston: And obviously not nobody, but… but yeah. Oh, and you know, I just talked to the publisher, Magnetic Press, Mike Kennedy, recently, so that's another interview that people should go…
- 56:52Tad Eggleston: Listen to, because, he's a cool guy.
- 56:56Phil: There you go.
- 56:57Tad Eggleston: So, Phil?
- 56:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 57:00Phil: My number 2 is, Bitch Planet by Kelly Sudakonic, Valentin D'Alandreau, Chris Peter, Clayton, coals.
- 57:10Phil: Yes?
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: Yep, you got it right twice today. Okay, I'm on.
- 57:14Tyler Johnson: Look at you!
- 57:15Phil: Alright, Anno.
- 57:16Phil: What, what I, what I lack in, in being widely read, I try to make up for in pronunciations over at Image. Yeah, we, again, like I mentioned, it's this type of double-dipping that I, I, I already know I'm doing, that I try not to repeat too much, but yeah, regret.
- 57:33Tad Eggleston: You mean two Deconic books already?
- 57:36Phil: No, I meant giving Bitch Planet two awards, because I gave it my, oh, wait, no, no, I took it away. I took away its, mentioning for Nonfiction Award. That's right.
- 57:48Tad Eggleston: That's right. Did you? Did you wind up taking away… I did.
- 57:51Phil: I'm pretty sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. It did, but it was still fantastic. This was, this year was the first time I'd reread the series.
- 57:57Tad Eggleston: Because I seem to remember giving you a hard time about their…
- 58:01Phil: Yes.
- 58:02Tad Eggleston: The fact that, like…
- 58:03Phil: Well, because it was the… it was the last second where I remembered that I read, suddenly, suddenly one summer camp from hell.
- 58:10Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay, okay, that's right, that's right. We took it away after the fact.
- 58:15Phil: Yeah.
- 58:16Tad Eggleston: It wasn't even a taking away off the air. No. You told…
- 58:21Phil: I did. Kelly Sue, and Valentine that they had won, and THEN took it away. It was, it was worse than a lot.
- 58:28Tad Eggleston: That kind of… you were, you were like, you were like the Kanye, steal the… the award because you decided.
- 58:36Phil: I prefer not to invoke… invoke Kanye at this time.
- 58:39Tad Eggleston: That was why I did it. Yes, it was.
- 58:43Phil: It was rude, and that's…
- 58:44Tyler Johnson: I'm with Kanye!
- 58:46Phil: We don't have time, Tyler, we don't have time.
- 58:48Tad Eggleston: Well, he did call him Kanye rather than Yee, so…
- 58:51Tyler Johnson: Indeed!
- 58:52Tad Eggleston: Clearly.
- 58:53Phil: Oh, no.
- 58:54Tyler Johnson: My son pointed out to me the other day, he said, had Kanye been serious about running for president years ago, 10 years ago, we could now be, having President Yi, you know, in office.
- 59:07Phil: Oh, let's not… let's, let's try to avoid that timeline at all costs. But yeah, but Bitch Planet was a… it's still a hell of a book. If you haven't read it yet, go and read it now, and hopefully it's coming back soon, you know? Or at least coming back eventually.
- 59:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, my, my, my number 2 is a book that, like.
- 59:25Tad Eggleston: I love so much that I…
- 59:29Tad Eggleston: I'm amazed that I… it had flown under my radar, and I'd never read any of it until this year.
- 59:38Tad Eggleston: I don't… I wish you…
- 59:40Tyler Johnson: You've heard of Jonah Hex, though, right?
- 59:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I've heard of Jonah Hex, but it… but… but…
- 59:46Tad Eggleston: And I think I've even read some Jonah Hex, but I'd never read any of this run of Jonah Hex. Okay. Even though… even though it's a reli… like, I sold issues of this run of Jonah Hex.
- 59:58Tad Eggleston: You know, it was leading into New 52.
- 1:00:01Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:00:01Phil: Then turn into western tales or something like that?
- 1:00:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:00:05Tad Eggleston: All-star Western.
- 1:00:08Phil: egg.
- 1:00:10Tad Eggleston: But, like, Jimmy Palmiati and Justin Gray's take on Jonah Hex, where almost all of them are one-and-done issues, a couple of short story arcs, they've got a who's who of artists.
- 1:00:23Tad Eggleston: Like, a who's who.
- 1:00:24Tad Eggleston: There's an issue that Jeff Lemire does. Jeff Lemire did an issue. That's the one issue I picked up, yep. Darwin Cook did, I think, 3 issues. Fiona Staples did an issue.
- 1:00:35Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:35Tad Eggleston: Pre-Saga?
- 1:00:37Phil: Yep, yep, yep, that's for sure.
- 1:00:38Tad Eggleston: Jordy Bernay probably did the most issues.
- 1:00:44Tad Eggleston: And still only did, like, a dozen or so out of the, like, 70, like… Yeah. Eduardo Riso did an issue.
- 1:00:51Phil: Hell yeah.
- 1:00:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, like…
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: again, a who's who, and, like, it was one of the things that we talked to Jimmy about when we had him on, because, like, we reached out to him be…
- 1:01:02Tad Eggleston: Because we've been reading this on the Pulp Blotter, so… so, like, this is… this is the year in review in many ways for me.
- 1:01:12Tad Eggleston: You know, essentially, like, the way they planned it out, because they were doing one-and-dones, like, anytime he was a con or whatnot, he'd pitch…
- 1:01:21Tad Eggleston: whoever, you know, hey, you wanna do Joanna Hex issue? And they'd be like, I don't know, what's the deadline? He's like, a year? And they'd go, oh, hell yes! And then they'd write the story specifically for the artist.
- 1:01:32Phil: That's awesome.
- 1:01:33Tad Eggleston: You know, so, I mean, they were in this unique place to make it that much easier to get some really great talent.
- 1:01:43Tad Eggleston: Etc. And yeah, it just… if you like Western comics at all.
- 1:01:50Tad Eggleston: And frankly, in a lot of ways, if you just like good comics, Chonatics is something that you need to go…
- 1:01:57Phil: Good job.
- 1:01:58Tad Eggleston: Go explore some.
- 1:01:59Phil: To an issue?
- 1:02:02Tad Eggleston: I don't think so, I'm not certain he was even still around.
- 1:02:07Phil: No, no, no, he was alive when it was coming out, pretty sure, because I remember… let me look this up.
- 1:02:12Tyler Johnson: You know what's really funny, guys? On my screen, the three of us are stacked, and it looked like Phil was looking up at Tad as he was, like, Brady Bunch style. Oh, that's funny. Yeah, so…
- 1:02:26Tad Eggleston: John Severin died in 2012.
- 1:02:31Phil: Yeah.
- 1:02:33Phil: And that's… that's after the New 52.
- 1:02:38Tad Eggleston: No…
- 1:02:39Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 1:02:40Phil: Yeah, New 52 was, like, 2011.
- 1:02:43Phil: 20… 2010, even.
- 1:02:47Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 1:02:48Tad Eggleston: It is 2011.
- 1:02:49Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, no, Severin might have been around.
- 1:02:52Phil: Yeah, so it's… it's… I… because I remember seeing something about, like, some Western stuff that he had drawn.
- 1:02:59Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I know Severin has done lots of Western stuff, and possibly even…
- 1:03:08Tad Eggleston: Jonah Hex. I just don't remember if he was part of that.
- 1:03:13Phil: Mine, though. Yeah.
- 1:03:18Phil: Sorry, don't mean to… to…
- 1:03:19Tad Eggleston: No, no, no.
- 1:03:20Phil: sidetrack.
- 1:03:21Tad Eggleston: I completely, I completely understand.
- 1:03:24Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, it was, really, really outstanding.
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait a minute… There is a…
- 1:03:38Tad Eggleston: It's like there's a new Jonah Hex series coming?
- 1:03:43Phil: I think I'd seen… maybe…
- 1:03:46Phil: That's something like that? I didn't… I didn't remember too much about it, though, but
- 1:03:51Phil: Possibly. But, Tyler, what was your, second pick for older work this year?
- 1:03:58Tyler Johnson: Pretty much everything by Jason.
- 1:04:01Tyler Johnson: Have you read any Jason comics?
- 1:04:04Tad Eggleston: If not, no. I've heard of him, but I haven't read any.
- 1:04:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah. They're just… they're deep, they're cool, he's got a way with, interjecting his anthropomorphic characters into very deadpan writing, and it's…
- 1:04:21Tyler Johnson: It's just… it's cool. I really like it.
- 1:04:24Phil: Alright.
- 1:04:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I loved his new book this year. One of my highlights of the year that people haven't seen yet, because it'll be in…
- 1:04:38Tad Eggleston: American Nature Presents No. 4, or at least it will start in American Nature Presents No. 4, is I actually did a…
- 1:04:47Tad Eggleston: an email interview with Jason.
- 1:04:50Tyler Johnson: Yep, I ain't heard that. That's awesome.
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: That was a lot of fun.
- 1:04:53Tad Eggleston: He's a cool guy, I love his work. Like, I went back and revisited it all while I was doing that, that…
- 1:05:01Tad Eggleston: You know, which isn't that hard, because it does a lot of silent work, so, like…
- 1:05:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, like, the tube…
- 1:05:07Tad Eggleston: As long as you can dive into it, you can also, like…
- 1:05:11Tad Eggleston: Breeze sometimes, if you… if you're really just trying to…
- 1:05:16Tyler Johnson: To get up.
- 1:05:17Tad Eggleston: field. Not only did…
- 1:05:18Tyler Johnson: Chad, did you and I do that kind of deep dive into Jason's work? But then, also, you gave me a couple Jason books for a gift.
- 1:05:26Tad Eggleston: Didn't I give you almost silent?
- 1:05:29Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:05:29Tyler Johnson: Yep. And I've absorbed, like, absorbed it is probably the best word that I could come up with. It's just, it's really good.
- 1:05:36Tyler Johnson: And so that's been really meaningful to me this year, is, like, something that, man, I should have been on to this guy.
- 1:05:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Phil, there's a lot of Jason on Hoopla.
- 1:05:45Tad Eggleston: Alright. You should go check out Jason.
- 1:05:47Tyler Johnson: He's like Sheriff, he just goes by just Jason.
- 1:05:50Phil: Nice.
- 1:05:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:05:51Tyler Johnson: He does, he's Norwegian, I think, or Finnish, or something. Yeah, alright.
- 1:05:54Tad Eggleston: No, he's Norwegian, though he lives in… in Trieste.
- 1:05:59Tad Eggleston: Now…
- 1:06:00Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:06:01Tad Eggleston: Or, no, I'm sorry, Montpellier.
- 1:06:04Tad Eggleston: When he moved there is when he wrote Werewolves of Montpellier.
- 1:06:10Tyler Johnson: Huh.
- 1:06:11Tad Eggleston: he's spent time in America, he's… he's moved around a little bit, but he's been in Montpellier for a while.
- 1:06:16Phil: Sure.
- 1:06:18Tad Eggleston: does anthropomorphic comics, but, like, in a very non-Disney style.
- 1:06:23Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:06:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah, very, like, almost depressing. I mean…
- 1:06:29Phil: House-like, even?
- 1:06:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, it's almost like they're humans wearing masks, but they're not masks.
- 1:06:38Phil: Okay.
- 1:06:38Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:06:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's a great way to put it. Like, you would think the main character is a man just wearing this rabbit mask with these ears that flop down, and he's just going about his day, you know?
- 1:06:48Tad Eggleston: Right, right. Yeah, no, apparently, and I've fallen in love with these movies since then, he's a big Jim Jarmouche fan.
- 1:06:59Phil: So if you've watched many Jim Jarman's… I'm a Christian.
- 1:07:02Tad Eggleston: movies… he's… he's got… Jarmouche movies, I think, the thing that holds them together is no matter what the…
- 1:07:14Tad Eggleston: The overreaching plot, or…
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: or, you know, whatever is, and he does some weird stuff, you know, he's got a vampire movie, he's got a western, he's got a Hitman movie…
- 1:07:26Tad Eggleston: you know… But, like…
- 1:07:32Tad Eggleston: They're very… much about the space in between. They're… they're… They're… they're slice-of-life movies.
- 1:07:45Tad Eggleston: That have breathing room, and… You know, a lot of scenes that…
- 1:07:53Tad Eggleston: Are just there because they would be there, not because they're designed to advance the character or the plot.
- 1:08:02Tad Eggleston: I mean, they don't necessarily not advance the character or the plot, but really, it's like…
- 1:08:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't want to say that he puts them going to the bathroom, because I don't remember if he actually does, but… but it's that sort of thing, where it's like… it's… you're not necessarily seeing the obvious…
- 1:08:21Tad Eggleston: Oh, this is… this is the… the beat that we would show in this storytelling.
- 1:08:27Tad Eggleston: you're seeing… We're talking over breakfast.
- 1:08:32Tad Eggleston: Or we're going to the movie together. Or… Yup, yup.
- 1:08:38Tad Eggleston: And, like, Jason sometimes has that feel, too, where he gets a lot of the in-between beats.
- 1:08:47Tad Eggleston: Almost more than the action beats.
- 1:08:50Tad Eggleston: In a really cool… way.
- 1:08:57Tad Eggleston: Sorry, I didn't mean to, like, talk more about Jason than you did, Tyler. This was supposed to be your pick.
- 1:09:02Tyler Johnson: Oh, no, it's fine, I'm glad. I know you're a fan of Jason, so…
- 1:09:08Tad Eggleston: Oh…
- 1:09:09Tyler Johnson: Such a…
- 1:09:09Tad Eggleston: Such a fantastic… Fantastic.
- 1:09:14Tad Eggleston: Creator.
- 1:09:14Tyler Johnson: Bill… Let's keep… keep it rolling.
- 1:09:18Phil: Fantastic.
- 1:09:19Tad Eggleston: That's a cream.
- 1:09:19Phil: My top pick for older work that I, discovered, rediscovered, it had been on my radar for a long time, but it was actually, you know, for my very first pick for this podcast, joining, joining as, you know, a regular, is, Haven by, Natasha Alterici, along with Wood Steering, Martinez, over at Vault.
- 1:09:42Phil: Absolutely incredible.
- 1:09:43Phil: Incredible book, all-timer. I… I need to buy it. It's… it's… it needs to be on my shelf. I need to, you know.
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: Nam.
- 1:09:51Phil: It's magnificent.
- 1:09:53Tyler Johnson: Check it out.
- 1:09:54Tad Eggleston: my… my top…
- 1:09:56Tad Eggleston: this is… this is, like… this falls into the category of… I have to say that I discovered it, because I… I hadn't read… I'd read…
- 1:10:07Tad Eggleston: teeny tiny tidbits.
- 1:10:09Tad Eggleston: before this year, just because it had never been collected. So managing to put your hands on, you know… Paul had sent me some stuff that he happened to have digitally, and, you know, I'd come across some on the web, but again, not collected in any way until this year is Paul Pope's original…
- 1:10:28Tad Eggleston: self-published series THB.
- 1:10:31Tad Eggleston: Which is, like, a coming-of-age tale on Mars with a… weird…
- 1:10:41Tad Eggleston: Super Bowl that gets wet and becomes a bodyguard.
- 1:10:46Phil: Huh.
- 1:10:47Tad Eggleston: Sidekick type… Thing to the… to the female… lead,
- 1:10:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't even know how to fully describe it, except that, like.
- 1:11:02Tad Eggleston: everything that… I mean, and don't get me wrong, he's done great, great work since then, like, so 100% and Heavy Liquid and things like that have only… but, like, Paul Pope has been getting huge accolades
- 1:11:17Tad Eggleston: forever, and this is, like, a huge part of the reason why. You know, people who got their hands on this book were able to see that this…
- 1:11:28Tad Eggleston: This was a guy that… that looked at comics.
- 1:11:34Tad Eggleston: I don't quite want to say differently, because…
- 1:11:37Tad Eggleston: Because you can see the influence of, like, all of comics, you know? He's influenced… I mean, he was working…
- 1:11:46Tad Eggleston: for Kadansha during the day, while he was drawing THB at night. So, you know, there's manga influence. He's a connoisseur of comic strips, and went to Ohio State, and, you know, therefore spent plenty of time at the Billie Ireland, just, like.
- 1:12:06Tad Eggleston: And it all makes it in, and it's just… fucking beautiful.
- 1:12:12Tad Eggleston: And thought-provoking, and funny, and…
- 1:12:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah, THB by Paul Pope. The first collected volume came out this year. There will be 3 or 4. The next one's coming out this, this spring, and I cannot wait.
- 1:12:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:12:31Tyler Johnson: Alright, I…
- 1:12:32Tad Eggleston: silent.
- 1:12:33Tyler Johnson: I'm going with the entire invincible universe, right? Because it's a rediscovery, it's not… I'm not discovering it. My.
- 1:12:42Tad Eggleston: Discovery is on the list.
- 1:12:43Tyler Johnson: Yeah, my young customers that are enjoying the Netflix show, or whatever it's on, no.
- 1:12:50Tad Eggleston: Amazon.
- 1:12:51Tyler Johnson: Amazon, yeah, the Invincible show. Coming in asking for capes.
- 1:12:56Tyler Johnson: Capes is the… is a new series based on that.
- 1:13:00Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:13:02Tyler Johnson: cartoon. And, so it made me dig out some of my old Invincible trades and issues, and it's like, holy cow. And then I… there's old Battle Beast stuff that I have, there's old, you know, there was a few different spin-offs at the time.
- 1:13:18Tyler Johnson: And they're bringing them all back now into continuity, it's awesome.
- 1:13:23Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:13:24Tyler Johnson: Bill.
- 1:13:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, bro.
- 1:13:25Tyler Johnson: Robert Kirkman's attempt at superheroes, and I loved it.
- 1:13:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, essentially he came up with Invincible when they didn't give him Spider-Man.
- 1:13:35Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 1:13:36Tad Eggleston: He wanted to write Spider-Man, he didn't get the job, so he made Invincible instead.
- 1:13:42Tyler Johnson: Was he working for Marvel at the time?
- 1:13:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, because he did, like, Marvel Zombies, and…
- 1:13:48Tad Eggleston: Couple of other things.
- 1:13:49Phil: Ultimate X-Men for a little while, he created Eric O'Grady Ant-Man.
- 1:13:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:57Tad Eggleston: So yeah.
- 1:14:01Tad Eggleston: Alright, so top single issues.
- 1:14:05Phil: Ian?
- 1:14:05Tad Eggleston: We should probably try to go… and I hate, hate it, because these have been so much fun.
- 1:14:11Phil: Nope.
- 1:14:11Tad Eggleston: Tyler's coming close to turning into a pumpkin, so she…
- 1:14:14Tyler Johnson: Oh, look at my… look at.
- 1:14:16Phil: These origins!
- 1:14:17Tyler Johnson: Look at these bags, look at those…
- 1:14:19Tad Eggleston: There she goes.
- 1:14:20Tyler Johnson: What an old man.
- 1:14:21Tad Eggleston: We should try to get through our single issues a little bit faster than the rest, so we can blast through the books we hope will be spectacular.
- 1:14:29Tad Eggleston: Sure. So, Phil, you're number 3.
- 1:14:33Phil: My number 3 is The Power Fantasy, number 10 by Gillen Wingard,
- 1:14:40Phil: Cole's Hughes over image. That was,
- 1:14:45Phil: absolutely incredible series. That's where I… I got back to being current on that issue. It came out on my birthday. I… I had some bite boxing as I was reading it that was absolutely… yeah, it was stunning. It was great. It'll stick with me. The experience of reading that issue. Felt like I was discovering…
- 1:15:02Phil: Secret messages in the book, it was wonderful.
- 1:15:04Tyler Johnson: That's awesome.
- 1:15:07Tad Eggleston: Alright, I just got to talk about this one with the publisher of this one.
- 1:15:12Tad Eggleston: Eric Reynolds, Tales of Paranoia by Robert Crum.
- 1:15:17Tad Eggleston: So, Robert Crum's always been an interesting figure. Do either of you get a chance to read this?
- 1:15:25Phil: I have not.
- 1:15:26Tyler Johnson: No, nope.
- 1:15:27Tad Eggleston: Okay, so… What's hard to tell… from this.
- 1:15:34Tad Eggleston: is whether Robert Crum is seriously an anti-vaxxer, or being… .
- 1:15:43Tyler Johnson: facetious, kind of…
- 1:15:45Tad Eggleston: Satirical of anti-vaxing.
- 1:15:48Tad Eggleston: And even if he's serious, you can tell that he's self-reflective enough that, like…
- 1:15:55Tad Eggleston: it's not clear how seriously you want… he wants you to… you know… how to put… I mean…
- 1:16:03Tad Eggleston: if it was anybody but Robert Crum, or even if it was Robert Crum, anywhere except maybe Vanna Graphics or Drawn and Quarterly, you'd read this book, and it'd be like Frank Milley's Holy Terror, and it'd be like, dude, what the fuck happened to you?
- 1:16:20Tad Eggleston: But between the fact that, like, it was reputably produced, and the fact that it's…
- 1:16:29Tad Eggleston: It's among his strongest works from a visual and storytelling standpoint, and it has just enough
- 1:16:38Tad Eggleston: Real self-reflection and or… I don't want to say quite tongue-in-cheek, but… but, like…
- 1:16:50Tad Eggleston: Understanding of how crazy parts of it sound?
- 1:16:55Tad Eggleston: That you don't know…
- 1:17:01Tad Eggleston: I guess what I'm saying is it doesn't feel like he's trying to convince you.
- 1:17:07Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 1:17:09Tad Eggleston: But you don't know if he's convinced.
- 1:17:12Tad Eggleston: But either way, it makes you see, like, some… some of the, like, crazy conspiracy theory-type people that are easy to just write off as idiots or inhumane or whatnot, it forces you to look at them in a much more human light.
- 1:17:30Tyler Johnson: Hmm.
- 1:17:33Phil: That does certainly sound interesting.
- 1:17:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, like, this… this… I haven't actually… I haven't re-read it yet, because I'm not ready to re-read it, but it's been in the back of my head since I read it.
- 1:17:46Tad Eggleston: Because it, it does, it, like, if nothing else, what it, what it succeeds at is…
- 1:17:54Tad Eggleston: Is really humanizing a group of people that people like me have trouble sometimes… Treating as individuals rather than…
- 1:18:07Tad Eggleston: monolithic… red-pilled… whatevers. Does that make sense?
- 1:18:13Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I get that.
- 1:18:14Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, that's… that's… that's my number 3!
- 1:18:21Tad Eggleston: Best single issue! Even though it's been, like, sunk in my head ever since. Which just says something about my number 2 and my number 1.
- 1:18:32Tad Eggleston: So… Tyler?
- 1:18:33Tyler Johnson: Alright. Well, I was…
- 1:18:35Tad Eggleston: He's an awfully good one, too.
- 1:18:36Tyler Johnson: Orla No. 1, from, John Leeson, Santi… Santi Stalli Cantorino.
- 1:18:45Tyler Johnson: From Mad Cave. When this… I mean, I've read John's stuff for a long time, but this, attempt at, like, a monster…
- 1:18:55Tyler Johnson: Book from him is… is really cool.
- 1:18:58Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:59Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean? Like, I haven't enjoyed.
- 1:19:01Tad Eggleston: This is among my favorite John Lee's work, and I am also a huge John Lee's fan.
- 1:19:07Tad Eggleston: And this was… this was, like, next-level stuff for him.
- 1:19:11Tyler Johnson: I thought so, too, like, it just was super creative, and, you know, it… it… I don't know.
- 1:19:19Tyler Johnson: I just loved it, and it was creepy, so it was right up my alley, you know?
- 1:19:22Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:19:23Tyler Johnson: bomb.
- 1:19:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Phil, what's your number 2?
- 1:19:28Phil: My number 2, for single issues was Lazarus Fallen number 6 from Luckerark.
- 1:19:34Phil: Rucka Lark Arcus Mayer over at Image. Thanks for filling in my next one for me. And have you stayed up… have you stayed current with Lazarus there, Tyler?
- 1:19:45Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:19:46Phil: Yeah, yeah, so you read it? Yes. Yeah, that was a hell.
- 1:19:49Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:19:49Phil: Thank you. That was, like.
- 1:19:50Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:19:51Phil: Whoa, what the damn hell. It was really hard to pick between that and…
- 1:19:55Phil: the issue where… where Infiniti's new power emerged. Yeah, it was, it was great.
- 1:20:00Tyler Johnson: I agree. Yeah, it was cool.
- 1:20:03Phil: 7, heck.
- 1:20:06Tad Eggleston: That actually I mean, I don't know if 6-7's a Daria thing or not, I'll have to ask, or…
- 1:20:14Tad Eggleston: But, it, it does lead me nicely into this, because Daria Faruhar is one of the younger cartoonists that I've gotten really into.
- 1:20:27Tad Eggleston: And, and her, her book, I Need to Kill My…
- 1:20:31Tad Eggleston: Boyfriend's College Roommate, put out by Ryan Carey at 4 Color Apocalypse.
- 1:20:38Tad Eggleston: Was just outstanding for… Like… that… that Gen Z… Look at misogyny and…
- 1:20:54Tad Eggleston: the world in general, and, you know, I mean, it's a… it's… it's kind of autobio fiction.
- 1:21:02Tad Eggleston: you know, I had her on the show, and it's autobio fiction, she obviously didn't… Kill her boyfriend's…
- 1:21:07Tad Eggleston: College roommate, or… Or do half the stuff, but, you know, it does…
- 1:21:16Tad Eggleston: Do just a really good job of, like…
- 1:21:19Tad Eggleston: Not just putting yourself in the shoes of… a minority female… Navigating the world, but, like…
- 1:21:34Tad Eggleston: Really kinda rings out… some of the more uniquely Gen Z… things. I mean…
- 1:21:44Tad Eggleston: more and more, and 6-7 is actually… I mean, I love that you did that, because it's one of the things that made me start really thinking about…
- 1:21:54Tad Eggleston: The different life experiences that… older millennials have, even versus younger millennials, and certainly,
- 1:22:06Tad Eggleston: older millennials and Gen Xers versus Gen Zers.
- 1:22:11Tad Eggleston: In terms of, like… If you're 22 right now.
- 1:22:17Tad Eggleston: Donald Trump has been your president for more than half of the time that you've been paying attention.
- 1:22:22Phil: Yeah.
- 1:22:23Phil: It's pretty… Pretty, terrifying.
- 1:22:27Tad Eggleston: And he's been in the political scene the whole time.
- 1:22:32Tyler Johnson: The whole time, since 15.
- 1:22:34Tad Eggleston: Right. If you're 22 right now, you know, you got to see a little bit happen because of Uvalde, but in general, you have had to do mass shooter drills every year of your life.
- 1:22:50Tad Eggleston: and had to listen to people go, yeah, there's nothing we can do, even as you, like, if you're even remotely worldly, go, really? Because they seem to do just fine in all of these other places.
- 1:23:05Tad Eggleston: Why can't we do it here?
- 1:23:09Tad Eggleston: Never, never mind, you know, how much less a college degree is worth, and how much more a college degree costs, and.
- 1:23:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so this was definitely another one of the books that just really stayed with me this year.
- 1:23:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:23:27Tyler Johnson: This is Tyler.
- 1:23:29Tad Eggleston: Why number 12? That's gonna be my big question here, because I can…
- 1:23:34Tad Eggleston: I love this book, and I'm trying to remember what number 12 was, and why it became the special one for you.
- 1:23:41Tyler Johnson: Well, I love the series in general.
- 1:23:45Tad Eggleston: We should introduce it, I was letting you introduce it, I didn't actually name it.
- 1:23:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah, mine are Arcana, from Jeff Famir, from Boom. Okay, the number 12 is arbitrary. Any of the issues would have been cool. I… that… that was just the latest one that I read, and…
- 1:24:04Tyler Johnson: I'm not kidding.
- 1:24:06Tad Eggleston: I believe you!
- 1:24:08Tyler Johnson: You said a single issue, and I'm like, you know, I really enjoy Minor Arcana.
- 1:24:13Tad Eggleston: No, I, I, I love it. I just, I just love that I, I, I, I went…
- 1:24:19Tad Eggleston: I went with the, I went with the, the, oh, like,
- 1:24:28Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna ask him why number 12, and you're like, cuz it was the last one I…
- 1:24:34Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah, no.
- 1:24:37Phil: What's your recency bias?
- 1:24:38Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It… I could have put number one for, you know what I mean? But no, it's just a super cool series, having to… and I'm really interested in that weird occult stuff of,
- 1:24:51Tyler Johnson: doing tarot readings and things like that. Not because I think it's true, but because, I just think it's fascinating that people.
- 1:24:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:25:00Tyler Johnson: Believe this.
- 1:25:01Tyler Johnson: And then,
- 1:25:04Tyler Johnson: Number 12 is just the most recent one I read, so there you go. No, that's fair.
- 1:25:10Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:25:12Tad Eggleston: Same question for Phil, and not be the most recent one you read. No. Because… because they're.
- 1:25:18Phil: Way, though.
- 1:25:19Tad Eggleston: They're a pinwalk.
- 1:25:20Phil: No.
- 1:25:22Phil: It would have meant I reread the issue most recently. This is Assorted Crisis Events No. 3 from Dennis Camp, Eric Zawattsky, or,
- 1:25:31Phil: Jordan Belair, Hosan Atzminel Howe, over at Image. That's the hearth one, Hearth 2, issue. It, it made me cry multiple times.
- 1:25:44Phil: Yeah, no.
- 1:25:45Tad Eggleston: That's a… Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:46Phil: that, when I read it, I was like, this is… this… this is, if not my book of the year, absolutely the number one single issue of the year. Hell yeah. I… I want… that's an issue that…
- 1:25:58Phil: if… if I… I mean, I'm gonna end up buying Volume 1 of the trade several times over for friends as a gift, but, for that issue specifically, yeah. Right. So damn good.
- 1:26:11Tad Eggleston: So my top single issue…
- 1:26:16Tad Eggleston: Partially just because it was so good, but partially because of ALL of…
- 1:26:21Tad Eggleston: the hardcore Easter eggs that they built into it, like, the website that was crossed off, but then if you went to it, it was a real website, and then the things you could do at the website
- 1:26:36Tad Eggleston: to find Easter eggs on the website that were related to the book.
- 1:26:41Tad Eggleston: And the phone number that was on the menu in the book, that was a real phone number that you could call, and you would get a message related to the book.
- 1:26:51Tad Eggleston: Wow. Chris Condon, Jeffrey Allen Love, and I should have put down the guy that did all the media stuff, he was on our show, and I'm drawing a blank on his name right now.
- 1:27:01Tad Eggleston: Just pulled out all the stops on the multimedia experience around news from the fallout.
- 1:27:09Tad Eggleston: The series in general, but they kicked it off with number one, and most of the multimedia stuff they had in place at that point to, like, dig deep into, and it's just a really…
- 1:27:24Tad Eggleston: Beautifully done comic.
- 1:27:26Tad Eggleston: With a kinda slightly different
- 1:27:28Tad Eggleston: take on a nuclear apocalypse-type thing to begin with, so when you put all that together, I just, like…
- 1:27:36Tad Eggleston: it was the single-issue event of the year for me, and, you know, once again, Chris Condon all over the fucking place.
- 1:27:46Phil: Yeah, that sounds… that sounds awesome.
- 1:27:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:50Tad Eggleston: NewsFromTheFallout.com. I'll tell people to just go, whether you've read it or not, and I'll toss.
- 1:27:57Tyler Johnson: experience it, yeah.
- 1:27:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like, click all…
- 1:28:00Phil: All over the place.
- 1:28:02Tad Eggleston: You might want to highlight entire pages, things might happen when you do that, like, when in doubt, just select all, and see what's.
- 1:28:12Tyler Johnson: See what happens, yeah.
- 1:28:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they… they… yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:18Tad Eggleston: So, Tyler…
- 1:28:20Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:28:20Tad Eggleston: top single-issue comic. Is this also the most recent one, or does this have a reason?
- 1:28:26Tyler Johnson: Ironically.
- 1:28:28Tad Eggleston: It is…
- 1:28:29Tyler Johnson: It does have a room.
- 1:28:30Tad Eggleston: But it has a reason?
- 1:28:32Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 1:28:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:28:35Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:28:36Tyler Johnson: Absolute Batman is, killing it this year, and in the… Issue 15. I know,
- 1:28:45Tyler Johnson: Many people know what it is already, but Scott Snyder and Jacques teamed up again, and they are, bringing back the Joker, and it reveals this… this,
- 1:28:57Tyler Johnson: Backstory of how…
