- 0:15Speaker 2: It'd be good morning. It is six after five. Welcome
- 0:18Speaker 2: to the show. Good to have you with us this morning. Yay.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We're on the medal table.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Two medals now and we're twelve overall, which is good there,
- 0:27Speaker 3: we're getting somewhere up. We fourteen layers of bureaucracy, apparently
- 0:31Speaker 3: between the patient and the board chair at Health New Zealand.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Its bloated, according to Christopher Luxen as a.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Celiac on sour dough.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So why are we appointing four more middle managers.
- 0:43Speaker 2: We'll look at that before six.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Also expert reaction to the Hamas leaders assassination in Tehran,
- 0:50Speaker 3: what it means for the seasfire, but also the Red
- 0:52Speaker 3: Sea and the shipping costs there we learned yesterday have
- 0:54Speaker 3: doubled since April. And the French kiss that's causing a
- 0:58Speaker 3: stir at the Olympics. Not a French kiss in the
- 1:02Speaker 3: way that you would be thinking about it. It's two
- 1:04Speaker 3: French people kissing, but the politicians causing a bit of
- 1:08Speaker 3: a stir. I'll tell you why politicians shouldn't kiss, should they?
- 1:12Speaker 2: They're all ugly. No one likes to see ugly people kiss.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Anyway, I'll tell you all about that story that's making
- 1:17Speaker 3: headlines too. It is seven after five.
- 1:20Speaker 4: The agenda.
- 1:23Speaker 3: It is Thursday, the first of August. Another medal for
- 1:25Speaker 3: New Zealand. Kiwi triathlete Hayden Wild has won silver after
- 1:29Speaker 3: a tight race to the finish Alex.
- 1:31Speaker 5: Ye over Jakes Hayden Wild and it's in the gold
- 1:35Speaker 5: medal position. With the final push towards the finish line
- 1:40Speaker 5: absolutely unbelievable.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It was an unbelievable finish.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Wild had been leading the race, but Great Britain's Alex
- 1:48Speaker 3: Years you heard there, overtook him at the last minute,
- 1:50Speaker 3: securing the gold. He just had nothing left in the tank,
- 1:54Speaker 3: Hayden Wild. You could see he wanted to do it.
- 1:56Speaker 3: He just didn't have the ability to do it and
- 1:59Speaker 3: to have a last New Zealand has now placed twelfth
- 2:02Speaker 3: on the metal table with one gold and one silver medal.
- 2:05Speaker 3: That is five places behind Canada, who should be banned outright.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Ukraine's air force say they shot down eighty nine drones
- 2:13Speaker 3: launched towards Kiev by Russia, one of the largest attacks
- 2:17Speaker 3: against Ukraine in months. It's believed that Ukraine has been
- 2:19Speaker 3: using jamming technology to force the drones to fly higher,
- 2:24Speaker 3: making them easier to intercept. Some buildings were damaged in
- 2:27Speaker 3: the attack, but no injuries have been reported. Back here,
- 2:30Speaker 3: Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Climate Change Minister Simon Wattson
- 2:33Speaker 3: announced plans for greater climate cooperation with Australia, something the
- 2:38Speaker 3: aviation industry says as much needed. It includes engaging in
- 2:42Speaker 3: the development of green hydrogen, sustainable fuels and green metals.
- 2:47Speaker 3: What is the difference between green hydrogen and just hydrogen.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:53Speaker 6: We are a long haul markets everywhere as far away
- 2:56Speaker 6: from us, so we really do depen on aviation for
- 2:58Speaker 6: our existence of the modern economy.
- 3:01Speaker 3: That was the aviation Sorry. New Zealand Airport's Association Chief
- 3:04Speaker 3: Executive Billy Moore on.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Your Radio and online on iHeartRadio early Edition with Ryan
- 3:12Speaker 4: Bridge and Smith City, New Zealand's Furniture Beds and a
- 3:15Speaker 4: Playing Store News Talk z.
- 3:17Speaker 2: B nine minutes after five.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I did find it curious this week that in New Zealand,
- 3:21Speaker 3: just while we're talking about that. In New Zealand, ditched
- 3:23Speaker 3: its twenty thirty targets for you know, climate change targets,
- 3:28Speaker 3: says it will still be net zero by twenty fifty,
- 3:31Speaker 3: so it's an interim target. But I mean, really, you're
- 3:34Speaker 3: an airline, you use jet fuel, You're gonna you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: there's gonna be some impact on the environment. I don't
- 3:40Speaker 3: expect you, of all people, to be clean and green
- 3:45Speaker 3: and climate friendly, you.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Know what I mean.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's like saying I don't know like a It's like
- 3:51Speaker 3: saying Pizza Hut is going to is going to wean
- 3:54Speaker 3: itself off pepperoni. You know, it's it's part of your business.
- 3:59Speaker 3: It's part of your business. Sure, do what you can.
- 4:01Speaker 3: But I mean, don't cut your nose off a spite
- 4:04Speaker 3: your face, I guess, is what I'm saying. Hamas you
- 4:07Speaker 3: would have seen this in the news. This is the
- 4:08Speaker 3: leader Ismail Hanair who has been killed. Assassinated they think,
- 4:13Speaker 3: they assume by Israeli rocketfire in Tehran. He was a
- 4:17Speaker 3: former Prime Minister of the Palestinian authority, this guy, and
- 4:20Speaker 3: he was a key member of the group that's been
- 4:23Speaker 3: trying to get a ceasefire. So you would have to say,
- 4:26Speaker 3: when you've got one of the leaders who's trying to
- 4:28Speaker 3: get a ceasefire being killed. He was a diplomat essentially
- 4:32Speaker 3: of that political wing of Hamas, you would have to
- 4:35Speaker 3: say that it's not looking good for a ceasefire. And
- 4:37Speaker 3: then on the other side, so you've got Israel doing
- 4:41Speaker 3: strikes into Tehran, You've got Israel obviously it's offensive in Gaza.
- 4:46Speaker 3: And then on the other side, you've got them worrying
- 4:48Speaker 3: about Hezbula and Lebanon and they're still you know, they've
- 4:51Speaker 3: hit one guy in Beirut there, but they've got more
- 4:54Speaker 3: to do. You know, at what point does Israel actually
- 4:57Speaker 3: spread itself too thin and start to the resources from
- 5:01Speaker 3: what it really wants to do in Gaza, and does
- 5:04Speaker 3: that limit its response everywhere else. We're gonna ask an
- 5:07Speaker 3: expert about that inside the next half hour.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Also, A and Z.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You might not have seen this, but from this morning
- 5:13Speaker 3: they've cut some rates, so the second time in a
- 5:18Speaker 3: month for them. So from today, the three year fixed
- 5:21Speaker 3: rate is down thirty six basis points to five point
- 5:25Speaker 3: nine to nine percent. The floating variable home loan rate
- 5:29Speaker 3: is down fifteen basis points to eight point four nine percent.
- 5:33Speaker 3: The business floating and business overdraft base rates are also
- 5:37Speaker 3: dropping fifteen basis points. Don't forget the Reserve Bank. Here's
- 5:41Speaker 3: next decision is due August fourteenth, and as I said
- 5:44Speaker 3: to you yesterday, the US Federal Reserve. Their announcement is
- 5:47Speaker 3: due any minute now this morning our time. They're expected
- 5:51Speaker 3: to hold steady there, but will look at cuts from September.
- 5:55Speaker 3: They reckon it has just gone twelve after five.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Ryan Bridge for twenty twenty four on early edition with
- 6:03Speaker 4: Smith City, New Zealand's furniture beds and a playing store
- 6:06Speaker 4: news dog zid Bey.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Fourteen minutes after five nine two ninety two is the
- 6:10Speaker 3: number to checks I look for to hearing from you
- 6:12Speaker 3: over the next hour. Hamas's leader Ismaeilhnair has been assassinated
- 6:17Speaker 3: inside Tehran in Iran.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's the capitol.
- 6:19Speaker 3: No one has claimed responsibility yet, but analysts on the
- 6:23Speaker 3: Iranian state television have placed the blame squarely with Israel
- 6:27Speaker 3: for the attack. Israel doesn't normally talk about any of
- 6:29Speaker 3: its offensives overseas, so in what direction could this take
- 6:33Speaker 3: the conflict from here? The Otago University Senior lecturer for
- 6:37Speaker 3: Middle Eastern and comparative politics is doctor Leon Goldsmith, good morning,
- 6:45Speaker 3: good on, good morning.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Can you hear me? Okay, then yeah, I can hear you.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Find excellent.
- 6:50Speaker 3: First of all, what do you think this is going
- 6:52Speaker 3: to do? Because this leader Ismael Hnair was obviously on
- 6:56Speaker 3: the diplomatic offensive to try and get a cease fire.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Does this mean a ceasefires who they're out of reach?
- 7:02Speaker 7: Yeah? I think this probably takes the s FI ideal
- 7:04Speaker 7: off the table for now, definitely removes that possibility. But
- 7:12Speaker 7: I think what it was is that Israel is probably
- 7:15Speaker 7: sending a very strong message that none are safe. I
- 7:17Speaker 7: think we've had thebeal and number two in Hamas number
- 7:20Speaker 7: one killed inside one day in the capital of Lebanon
- 7:24Speaker 7: and Eran. It's fairly significant and it could course a
- 7:28Speaker 7: major reverberations.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's not.
- 7:32Speaker 3: In the case of Lebanon, they're not just heading you know,
- 7:35Speaker 3: the southern border. They've actually they've actually struck them in
- 7:38Speaker 3: be I mean they're heading to the capitals here, aren't they.
- 7:41Speaker 7: Which is precisely what the US asked them not to do.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So do you in some ways do we take heart
- 7:48Speaker 3: from the fact that they are quite limited in scope?
- 7:54Speaker 7: Well, I think what these are very strategic, targeted assassinations
- 7:59Speaker 7: of people that Israelis believe responsible for October seven and
- 8:04Speaker 7: another attacks against Israel. So this is their policy for
- 8:09Speaker 7: some time of disproportionate retaliation against individuals. So Ismahani is
- 8:14Speaker 7: the most senior person to be targeted and assassinate, assassinated
- 8:19Speaker 7: since October seven and until that was until yesterday. Previously
- 8:24Speaker 7: it would have been for a shaka who was killed
- 8:25Speaker 7: in Beirut, So I think it's I think it may
- 8:32Speaker 7: have just also been timing here because normally Ismahanir would
- 8:37Speaker 7: have been in Doha, which would have been somewhere with
- 8:39Speaker 7: Israel would never touch him. The fact that he happened
- 8:42Speaker 7: to be in Tehran for the inauguration of Revenue president
- 8:46Speaker 7: gave Israelis an opportunity to hit him.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Right, your assessment basically sees fire off the table for
- 8:53Speaker 3: now as a result of this. What about risk of
- 8:56Speaker 3: a wider conflict?
- 8:57Speaker 2: What is that?
- 8:58Speaker 7: What?
- 8:58Speaker 3: What what does it take before we take over into
- 9:00Speaker 3: that territory.
- 9:03Speaker 7: Well, I think there's going to be some very serious
- 9:05Speaker 7: conversations happening in Tehran right now and beate routes. So
- 9:10Speaker 7: I think, on one hand, there's a lot of analysts
- 9:14Speaker 7: source suggesting that there is there's no way that Israel
- 9:17Speaker 7: can not retaliate in some way, either via Hizballah through
- 9:23Speaker 7: Southern eleven nine, also trying to ramp up attacks via
- 9:27Speaker 7: Alahofi drones, rockets from Yemen. Also, as we're body seen
- 9:33Speaker 7: previously in April, direct missile launches from Iran to Israel,
- 9:39Speaker 7: which will have a high degree of risk of regional escalation.
- 9:44Speaker 7: We also have US forces approaching the Lebanese coast warships again,
- 9:50Speaker 7: so the pieces are looking quite concerning here. What we
- 9:55Speaker 7: may have seen is what we probably saw the first
- 9:58Speaker 7: phase of an April, is that the Israelis are trying
- 10:02Speaker 7: to perhaps draw the US into a direct confrontation with
- 10:06Speaker 7: there are which I think there's something very concerning and
- 10:11Speaker 7: something that the Iranians will probably quite key not to
- 10:14Speaker 7: be drawn into that trap.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's certainly on the table, isn't it. Thank
- 10:19Speaker 3: you very much for analysis, Doctor Leon Goldsmith, Otago University,
- 10:23Speaker 3: Senior lecturer for Middle Eastern and Comparative Politics with US
- 10:26Speaker 3: there saying that that cease fire pretty much off the
- 10:29Speaker 3: table after this assassination. And don't forget that we have
- 10:32Speaker 3: skin in the game here too. We've got to defense
- 10:34Speaker 3: force members deployed to protect that maritime a route i
- 10:40Speaker 3: should say, from the in the Red Sea from the
- 10:42Speaker 3: Hooti rebels. Just gone nineteen after five, we're looking at
- 10:46Speaker 3: building consents.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Next the news you need this morning and the in
- 10:50Speaker 4: depth analysis early edition with Ryan Bridge and Swift City,
- 10:54Speaker 4: New Zealand's furniture beds and a playing store. News talks'd be.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Twenty one after five. The number of new build consents
- 11:01Speaker 3: issued in the year to journe has dropped to a
- 11:03Speaker 3: five year low. Stats and Z data shows just over
- 11:06Speaker 3: fourteen thousand standalone houses we're consented, that's down nineteen percent,
- 11:11Speaker 3: and there was an even larger drop in multi unit buildings,
- 11:14Speaker 3: with just over eighteen thousand approved. That's down twenty eight percent.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Joining me in our Construction Industry Council Chief Executive sorry
- 11:22Speaker 3: executive director, Tommy Honey, Hey, Tommy.
- 11:25Speaker 8: And Marina, how are you? Yeah?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Good, thank you. Good to have you on the show.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I just wanted to point out the apartments consents down
- 11:32Speaker 3: fifty percent. Yep, yep, that's big.
- 11:35Speaker 8: So oh it is. And so what we've seen is
- 11:39Speaker 8: a continuation of sort of a downward trend that really
- 11:43Speaker 8: started in the middle of what's about June twenty twenty two,
- 11:47Speaker 8: so two years ago, and we have been like a
- 11:51Speaker 8: lot of people waiting for that kind of to reverse
- 11:53Speaker 8: or at least plant. Oh, but it seems like we're
- 11:55Speaker 8: still heading downwards. The thing about apartments is that for
- 11:59Speaker 8: the of the builders developed US investors and those is
- 12:03Speaker 8: that they're quite a risk. And when you've got inflation
- 12:06Speaker 8: running as high as it has been and that's starting
- 12:08Speaker 8: to turn the corner, but the Reserve Bank is not.
- 12:12Speaker 8: Actually they haven't turned the corner yet, and there's a
- 12:17Speaker 8: bit of a lag there was all. There's always a
- 12:19Speaker 8: lag when when the mortgage rates and interest rates so
- 12:25Speaker 8: very slow to respond. So I still think we're three
- 12:28Speaker 8: six nine months away from any really great health. Coming
- 12:31Speaker 8: back to the back to the sector.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Who is building? I mean, obviously some houses are getting built.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Who is building them?
- 12:38Speaker 8: Well, I think I think the people who've got the
- 12:42Speaker 8: winders all to do that, because you've got to think
- 12:43Speaker 8: also the whole real estate state market of flat So
- 12:46Speaker 8: you're going to go building. Yeah, if you've got a
- 12:48Speaker 8: house you live in and you want to build a
- 12:50Speaker 8: new one, sell the first one. Yeah, not a guarantee
- 12:53Speaker 8: that that's going to this is the right time to
- 12:54Speaker 8: be doing that, unless you're just looking a little bit
- 12:57Speaker 8: further into the future. One of the big sort of
- 13:00Speaker 8: handbrakes on the whole system is that one of our
- 13:02Speaker 8: biggest builders or the biggest clients really has recently in
- 13:07Speaker 8: recent year has been the government through coying or order.
- 13:10Speaker 8: And because they put a pause on that, everyone that
- 13:14Speaker 8: works for them, which is builders, and because the government
- 13:16Speaker 8: itself is a builder, they have developers who have trades,
- 13:20Speaker 8: people in sub trades, and that whole part of the
- 13:23Speaker 8: sector has taken a real hit because the number of
- 13:26Speaker 8: houses that coying Aura has been consenting getting built in
- 13:30Speaker 8: recent years has been around about ten to fifteen percent
- 13:32Speaker 8: of all the houses. So the old that nineteen percent drop,
- 13:36Speaker 8: a good portion of that is actually due to coying
- 13:39Speaker 8: or and not building starting any new project. They're finishing
- 13:41Speaker 8: off a few projects, but they put pause and a whole.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Lot and that a perfect storm.
- 13:47Speaker 8: Oh yeah, it's confidence right through all the way. And
- 13:50Speaker 8: this whole a whole set depends on confidence and certainty,
- 13:55Speaker 8: and there's so much uncertainty around with what the government's doing.
- 13:59Speaker 8: We know they plans, we want to see them happen
- 14:01Speaker 8: a lot quicker the economy, who are interest rates? And
- 14:05Speaker 8: then everyone who wants to spend the money sitting back
- 14:07Speaker 8: and saying, oh, we'll just wait. So where Yeah, perfect
- 14:10Speaker 8: storms or the right way to describe it.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Tommy, thanks so much of your time. That's Tommy Honey.
- 14:14Speaker 3: He's the executive director at the Construction Industry Council. It
- 14:18Speaker 3: is twenty four minutes away for sorry, twenty four minutes
- 14:21Speaker 3: after five. He did say, if you didn't hear that
- 14:23Speaker 3: at at the start of the interview, in the next
- 14:25Speaker 3: six nine twelve months, so basically within the next year
- 14:28Speaker 3: sometime he expects those numbers to start turning around twenty
- 14:32Speaker 3: five after five. What happened yesterday in Poka Cooe I
- 14:36Speaker 3: will tell you about in a second. It's quite it's
- 14:38Speaker 3: not the biggest story of the day, but I think
- 14:41Speaker 3: it underscores a few big problems that we've got at
- 14:44Speaker 3: the moment.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Separating the fact from the section Kid's Billy Edition with
- 14:50Speaker 4: Smith City, New Zealand's Furniture Beds and Applied Store News
- 14:54Speaker 4: Talk ZBI, this is.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Not the most important story that you will hear today,
- 14:57Speaker 3: but it grinds my gears.
- 15:00Speaker 2: It's a small, seemingly.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Insignificant event, but I think it speaks to two things
- 15:05Speaker 3: that I absolutely hate about the world that we live
- 15:07Speaker 3: in right now. It took place at Cinema three and
- 15:09Speaker 3: pook A Color. You might have seen the video on
- 15:11Speaker 3: the Herald website if you haven't gone to check it out.
- 15:14Speaker 3: So it's two women and a child going to the movies.
- 15:17Speaker 3: They sneak food into the movies, which I know is
- 15:19Speaker 3: not the biggest thing happening in the world right now.
- 15:22Speaker 3: We've all done it too, haven't we. Probably we've hidden
- 15:25Speaker 3: that food. These guys, these entitled prats, yes, let's just
- 15:29Speaker 3: call them what they are. They had food, they had drink,
- 15:33Speaker 3: they had snacks, they had hot food. They snuck hot
- 15:37Speaker 3: food into the cinema. I mean, that's brazen. And the cinema.
- 15:42Speaker 3: The guy's working at the cinema goes over them and says, oh,
- 15:44Speaker 3: you know, can you please You're not allowed to bring
- 15:46Speaker 3: your own food in. These guys just are having none
- 15:50Speaker 3: of it. First of all, that the guy that comes
- 15:52Speaker 3: over has an Asian accent. They mock him for his race.
- 15:56Speaker 3: They sit there and they start berating him.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Oh you've made my daughter cry. You've made my daughter cry.
- 16:02Speaker 3: You shouldn't be letting, you know, get out of my way.
- 16:04Speaker 3: It's his cinema. The police came and had to escort
- 16:08Speaker 3: them out for goodness sakes. They refused to move, They
- 16:12Speaker 3: demanded refunds, They carried on eating.
- 16:14Speaker 2: They said I wish.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I had my vape here, I'd start vaping and things
- 16:17Speaker 3: like that. The staff said they felt unsafe. They had
- 16:20Speaker 3: to turn the movie off. So whoever was in the
- 16:22Speaker 3: movie missed out.
- 16:25Speaker 2: People.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Cinema has rules. It's clearly signposted apparently five times throughout
- 16:30Speaker 3: the cinema complex that you cannot bring your own food.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And so my feelings one, if you can't go on
- 16:35Speaker 3: our forty without eating, you probably should. Two, this is
- 16:39Speaker 3: a wider issue. It's about people not respecting rules. It's
- 16:43Speaker 3: not your property. Businesses need to make money otherwise they
- 16:47Speaker 3: go out of business and people lose their jobs. And
- 16:49Speaker 3: number three, and this is the most egregious breach for me.
- 16:54Speaker 3: They posted it all to TikTok. Just the audacity to
- 16:57Speaker 3: film all of that break the poor person working there
- 17:01Speaker 3: and then put it all on TikTok. It's shameless, and
- 17:05Speaker 3: that is what's wrong with us today. I think we
- 17:07Speaker 3: have no shame anymore. You steal something, Oh it's a
- 17:10Speaker 3: cost of living crisis. You know, you do something terrible.
- 17:14Speaker 3: It's my mental health. Where is the shame from breaking rules?
- 17:20Speaker 2: I don't see much of it.
- 17:22Speaker 3: At Cinema three Hooker Koe, That's for sure twenty nine
- 17:25Speaker 3: and after fine.
- 17:31Speaker 4: The first word on the News of the Day Early
- 17:34Speaker 4: edition with Ryan Bridge and Smith City, New Zealand's furniture
- 17:37Speaker 4: beds at a playing store. News Talk Sibby.
- 17:48Speaker 9: For the first time.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Good morning, it is twenty four away from six. You're
- 17:56Speaker 2: on news Talk, said b.
- 17:57Speaker 3: In the United States, Donald Trump ditching officially ditching Project
- 18:02Speaker 3: twenty twenty five.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It is buried. It has done.
- 18:05Speaker 3: The so called radical think tank that came up with
- 18:08Speaker 3: this dream list of plans for a future Trump president.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Is now closing down.
- 18:15Speaker 3: The guy that was in charge of it is quitting
- 18:17Speaker 3: and the Trump campaign wants nothing to do with it. Also,
- 18:21Speaker 3: they've released their first attack ad on Karmala. Harris will
- 18:24Speaker 3: play that for you shortly. Also today, lots of your
- 18:27Speaker 3: feedback on Cinema III in Poka, Co where yesterday a
- 18:32Speaker 3: video emerged of two people, two women who were in
- 18:35Speaker 3: there with their child. They brought not to snacks in
- 18:38Speaker 3: but hot food, snacks and beverages and just fragmently flouted
- 18:44Speaker 3: the rules and ate them and then when they were
- 18:47Speaker 3: told to leave, started becoming abusive to the poor guy
- 18:51Speaker 3: who was trying to run the cinema. Ryan Pete says,
- 18:55Speaker 3: you ask where is the shame from people breaking the rules?
- 18:58Speaker 3: I ask where's the penal tea for breaking the rules? Interestingly,
- 19:02Speaker 3: Pete that when the police came, they did trespass them
- 19:04Speaker 3: from there. Ryan, you didn't tell us yesterday who was
- 19:08Speaker 3: going to win the US election based on the thirteen keys.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You're quite right. I didn't do that because I got
- 19:14Speaker 3: carried away with the sevens. I apologize next week, next Tuesday,
- 19:19Speaker 3: Leo tells me. Next tuesday we'll have the guy who
- 19:22Speaker 3: invented the keys from the States on the show. So
- 19:25Speaker 3: we'll wait till then show we another here says we
- 19:29Speaker 3: need to bring back the stocks outside the courtroom. Let
- 19:33Speaker 3: people throw tomatoes at them. The shame will return pretty
- 19:37Speaker 3: quickly when they're covered in rotten food. That one from Peter.
- 19:41Speaker 3: It is twenty two away.
- 19:42Speaker 4: From sex Brian Bridge.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Callen Proctors in Dunedin with an update on Nobby Clarke.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Morning Ryan, He's ticked off.
- 19:50Speaker 9: One of his apologies has the in the cargol Mayor,
- 19:54Speaker 9: but he's yet to publicly make another one. He's apologized
- 19:57Speaker 9: at a council meeting for upsetting a woman about her
- 20:00Speaker 9: ability and appearance. This was back in March. He was
- 20:03Speaker 9: found to be in breach of the Council's code for
- 20:05Speaker 9: derogatory comments towards the female EMC at a United Fire
- 20:09Speaker 9: Brigades Association event. It's one of two public apologies expected
- 20:13Speaker 9: of the mayor. Councilors have also requested a sincere apology
- 20:16Speaker 9: from Clark after he repeatedly used the N word and
- 20:20Speaker 9: a homophobic slur on a TV show.
- 20:22Speaker 3: All Right Dunedin's wear that today?
- 20:24Speaker 9: Kellum mainly fine chance of morning and night shower, light
- 20:28Speaker 9: winds and a high of eight today.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Thanks mate.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Black Ben is in christ Church Port worker safety in
- 20:33Speaker 3: the spotlight there Black.
- 20:35Speaker 10: Yeah So Maritime New Zealand says the dangers of working
- 20:37Speaker 10: with high risk machinery have been highlighted in yesterday's sentencing
- 20:41Speaker 10: of Littleton Port Company. It's been ordered to pay more
- 20:44Speaker 10: than five hundred thousand dollars in fines after Don Grant
- 20:47Speaker 10: died while working on Anzac Day in twenty twenty two.
- 20:50Speaker 10: The seventy one year old was struck and buried under
- 20:53Speaker 10: coal on the deck of a ship. So Maritime MZI
- 20:55Speaker 10: director Kirsty Hewlett says the incident never should have happened.
- 20:59Speaker 10: She says there were lack of controls and policies in
- 21:01Speaker 10: place around loading coal, but the company's made changes to
- 21:05Speaker 10: reduce the rest since Grant's death.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Thanks so much for that. The weather today, Blake, It's.
- 21:10Speaker 10: Going to be mostly cloudy with a few showers and
- 21:12Speaker 10: southerly is coming in and an overall high seven.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Thank you, Max Toles on the Capital. This is about
- 21:17Speaker 3: Wellington on a Plate. Hang on, Max, You've already done
- 21:20Speaker 3: Burger this week, haven't you? When you're actually gonna do
- 21:23Speaker 3: something serious for us?
- 21:24Speaker 11: No, I no, I'm just sleep walking through this job.
- 21:29Speaker 11: Wellington on the Plate does begin today two hundred plus
- 21:32Speaker 11: burgers around the region as part of Burger Wellington one
- 21:35Speaker 11: hundred dining events trying to get people out and about
- 21:38Speaker 11: spending money cafes, bars and restaurants. How to flick through
- 21:42Speaker 11: the Burger Wellington list yesterday. My favorite has to be
- 21:44Speaker 11: the inter island of Burger, which is being sold the
- 21:47Speaker 11: board Ferry Crossings if they go ahead. Of course, the
- 21:50Speaker 11: Burger chips, beer all come served in this little paper
- 21:54Speaker 11: model boat, no autopilot option. Quite by chance that we're
- 21:59Speaker 11: also chasing the In fact, another high end restaurant is
- 22:01Speaker 11: closing in the capital. This is quite serious, Concord Bistron Bar,
- 22:05Speaker 11: yet another high end spots. They say people just aren't
- 22:09Speaker 11: eating out as much at the moment. Concord also in
- 22:11Speaker 11: a bit of a devil's triangle of construction work. You've
- 22:13Speaker 11: got neighboring Wakefield Street closed at the moment, council building
- 22:17Speaker 11: town Hall long closed, the Council's Civic Square work also
- 22:21Speaker 11: causing major disruptions for local businesses. Yeah, another piece of
- 22:26Speaker 11: sad news for Wellington hospitality.
- 22:29Speaker 3: It is I do like that restaurant. Well, I did
- 22:31Speaker 3: like that restaurant, and I can now see in your
- 22:34Speaker 3: defense why you are promoting Wellington on a plate so much.
- 22:37Speaker 3: The weather today, Max.
- 22:39Speaker 11: That's right, mostly cloudy with showers, strong sou Easterly's eight the.
- 22:43Speaker 3: High thank you very much, NIVA's and Auckland good morning,
- 22:45Speaker 3: good morning. So poka coey, these guys go into the cinema.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I've actually got a found a bit of audio from
- 22:50Speaker 3: the video that they posted on TikTok. So they take
- 22:53Speaker 3: hot food in there. The attendant comes along, tells them
- 22:57Speaker 3: to stop, and this is what happens. I've got all
- 23:00Speaker 3: right to tell a five year old and make a
- 23:02Speaker 3: five year old cry.
- 23:03Speaker 9: You've got a right to make a five year old cry.
- 23:05Speaker 3: You've got a right to make a five year old cry.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Sorry for you've got to write to make a five.
- 23:10Speaker 12: Year old cry wow.
- 23:12Speaker 3: And this goes on and on and on, and they
- 23:16Speaker 3: all the while they're still eating the food.
- 23:18Speaker 12: This story makes my blood boil.
- 23:21Speaker 4: You're right.
- 23:21Speaker 12: And because they went in there, they took all this
- 23:23Speaker 12: hot food. It was a whole picnic. It was drinks
- 23:26Speaker 12: as well, and it just takes me back. I think
- 23:29Speaker 12: everyone has a story like this. I mean, I know
- 23:31Speaker 12: food is expensive there, or they're thinking about popcorn, but
- 23:34Speaker 12: that's the way. That's how movies, you know, the theaters
- 23:37Speaker 12: make the money.
- 23:38Speaker 3: It's true that I.
- 23:39Speaker 12: Remember this is many years ago, going to Titanic and
- 23:43Speaker 12: I went to an afternoon metade and I was really
- 23:45Speaker 12: I think, oh my gosh, I want to go and
- 23:46Speaker 12: see Leonardo, So I've got to go in there, and
- 23:49Speaker 12: blah blah blah. Went in there and I sat down
- 23:51Speaker 12: and there was like four people next to me eating.
- 23:54Speaker 12: They'd taken in a whole roast chicken. I'm not lying.
- 23:58Speaker 12: They were sitting there devour this roast chicken and they
- 24:02Speaker 12: had potato salad, and we could hear was in Gigler's slooping.
- 24:05Speaker 12: And the USh had to come and say, hey, hey, hey, dudes,
- 24:08Speaker 12: you can't eat this. And I was like, really, why
- 24:11Speaker 12: the hell are they bringing? Go and have your lunch.
- 24:13Speaker 12: Have you lunch before you go to the movie.
- 24:15Speaker 2: It's an hour and forty minutes. You don't need to eat.
- 24:18Speaker 12: But people are taking an amazing you know, like one
- 24:21Speaker 12: person even took in a whole cake. Not that I
- 24:24Speaker 12: was here for a whole cake.
- 24:25Speaker 2: How do you even cut it up?
- 24:26Speaker 5: Exactly?
- 24:28Speaker 12: How to stop the madness?
- 24:29Speaker 2: How's the weather today?
- 24:30Speaker 12: In the cloudy showers are high of fourteen bit chili
- 24:33Speaker 12: for Auckland.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Brilliant, Thank you Navi.
- 24:34Speaker 13: Day to go to the movies?
- 24:36Speaker 2: I think sounds like it.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Actually, just don't take off, don't take your own food.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Just buy theirs, and it is expensive. But the thing
- 24:42Speaker 3: is it's their property.
- 24:43Speaker 2: That's right, isn't it.
- 24:44Speaker 3: If you want to make your own food or take
- 24:46Speaker 3: your own food, watch a movie at home. It is
- 24:49Speaker 3: seventeen to.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Six International correspondence with Insit Eye Insurance Peace of Mind
- 24:56Speaker 4: for New Zealand Business.
- 24:58Speaker 3: It is fourteen and it's away from six. Karmala Harris
- 25:02Speaker 3: has been accused of using she's actually done this before,
- 25:05Speaker 3: she has formed for this, but using a fake accent
- 25:08Speaker 3: to try and blend in with those or relate to
- 25:12Speaker 3: those who she's talking to.
- 25:13Speaker 2: She was at a campaign.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Rally in Atlanta, Georgia in the South. This is a
- 25:20Speaker 3: woman from let's not forget California.
- 25:23Speaker 8: Listen to this and you all helped us win in
- 25:27Speaker 8: twenty twenty and we don't do it again in twenty
- 25:29Speaker 8: twenty four.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Here, we don't do that again. So anyway, people are
- 25:34Speaker 3: saying it's a little cringe. Whenever she opens her mouth,
- 25:37Speaker 3: she seems to imitate the accent of whoever she's standing
- 25:40Speaker 3: in front of. Mitch mccanna's with us Live from the
- 25:43Speaker 3: States to mony Mitch, good morning, good morning, Bridgie, how
- 25:48Speaker 3: are you.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I'm good?
- 25:48Speaker 3: Thank you and has she When is she going to
- 25:52Speaker 3: announce her running mate? Is it in the coming days
- 25:54Speaker 3: or will it be in the coming weeks.
- 25:56Speaker 14: It's in the coming day, So the race for running
- 25:58Speaker 14: mate is nearing a conclude. According to the Harris campaign,
- 26:01Speaker 14: they've revealed that the presidential candidate's going to hold her
- 26:04Speaker 14: first rally alongside her VP pick next Tuesday local time,
- 26:09Speaker 14: so Wednesday morning in New Zealand, and it's going to
- 26:11Speaker 14: be in Philadelphia. Now, there's some top contenders in this
- 26:15Speaker 14: race still, the Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly,
- 26:20Speaker 14: a governor from Minnesota, and the Secretary of Transportation beat
- 26:23Speaker 14: Pete Boodages. Now, this rally is taking place in Pennsylvania,
- 26:27Speaker 14: but the campaign says, don't buy into that. It doesn't
- 26:29Speaker 14: mean it's going to be Josh Shapiro the governor. They
- 26:32Speaker 14: insist no campaign decision has been made. And just while
- 26:35Speaker 14: I'm with you, Bridgie, there's new polling that's just come
- 26:37Speaker 14: out in the last few hours for Kamala Harris that
- 26:40Speaker 14: shows she has erased Donald Trump's lead and the number
- 26:44Speaker 14: of swing states. So now she's winning in Michigan, Nevada,
- 26:47Speaker 14: Arizona and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. North Carolina is still Trump
- 26:51Speaker 14: and they're tired in Georgia. So this is a big
- 26:54Speaker 14: comeback from the Democrats.
- 26:55Speaker 3: It is a massive comeback, although you could argue still
- 26:59Speaker 3: a honeymoon fit for her. And when I was looking Mitch,
- 27:02Speaker 3: as I'm sure you have been two at the biggest
- 27:04Speaker 3: issues that voters are voting on. Number one is the economy.
- 27:07Speaker 3: You'd have to say that would be Trump's number two, immigration,
- 27:11Speaker 3: Trump's number three abortion is hers. But on those big issues,
- 27:15Speaker 3: he's got the edge over her, doesn't he.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 27:18Speaker 14: Well, they've been attacking the Biden administration over immigration for
- 27:22Speaker 14: a very.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Long time now.
- 27:23Speaker 14: Around ten million immigrants have come into this country reportedly
- 27:27Speaker 14: illegally in the last three or so years. They are
- 27:30Speaker 14: accusing her of being Joe Biden's border czar, the person
- 27:33Speaker 14: that has really overseeing this for the administration. So they'll
- 27:36Speaker 14: put new videos out in the last forty eight hours
- 27:39Speaker 14: accusing her of being the reason there are so many
- 27:42Speaker 14: illegal immigrants in this country. So I think that's something
- 27:44Speaker 14: we're likely to see in the coming months and in
- 27:46Speaker 14: any debate if that actually happens.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Mitch, thank you.
- 27:49Speaker 3: That is Mitch McCann with US Stateside, just gone eleven
- 27:53Speaker 3: minutes away from six. We actually have the audio of
- 27:56Speaker 3: that first attack ad from the Trump campaign. Will play
- 27:58Speaker 3: it to you shortly, Bryan Bridge right now. And a
- 28:03Speaker 3: throwback to DHBs Health, New Zealand has appointed four new
- 28:06Speaker 3: regional directors aimed at bringing decision making back to the
- 28:11Speaker 3: local level. It comes just a week after the board
- 28:13Speaker 3: was sacked and replaced with a commissioner. The Association of
- 28:16Speaker 3: Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton's with me now. Sarah,
- 28:20Speaker 3: good morning, Good to have you on the program. First
- 28:26Speaker 3: of all, does this seem counterintuitive to you? At one
- 28:30Speaker 3: level we've got, oh, it's too much to bureaucracy, and
- 28:32Speaker 3: now we're appointing four more managers.
- 28:36Speaker 6: I don't know, Ryan, We've already got regional directors in place,
- 28:40Speaker 6: they've been there for a while. These new regional directors
- 28:45Speaker 6: who will replace them have got a different set of
- 28:47Speaker 6: responsibilities and delegations, including I think bringing oversight of commissioning
- 28:53Speaker 6: or parts of the funded health sector back under their oversight.
- 29:01Speaker 6: I don't know. For our members, you know who are
- 29:04Speaker 6: working in hospitals at the front line The biggest challenge
- 29:08Speaker 6: I think is workforce and staffing levels, and you know,
- 29:13Speaker 6: their lack of colleagues, and so there's been a lot
- 29:16Speaker 6: of rhetoric from the government and from the new Commissioner
- 29:20Speaker 6: lest the Llevy that there is enough money, there won't
- 29:22Speaker 6: be any more money, and that they can make do
- 29:25Speaker 6: with what they've got, and that does not feel great
- 29:28Speaker 6: from where we're sitting in terms of whether there are
- 29:31Speaker 6: enough doctors out there to get the work done safely
- 29:36Speaker 6: in an untimely manner.
- 29:38Speaker 3: You're representing senior salary doctors and dentists and things like that.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Have you noticed have your members noticed are changed in
- 29:49Speaker 3: frontline staff, because that was the theory we would get
- 29:51Speaker 3: rid of some back office and we would feel it
- 29:54Speaker 3: more in the front. We would have more people at
- 29:56Speaker 3: the front.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Do we.
- 30:00Speaker 7: No.
- 30:02Speaker 6: I've just been traveling around the country talking directly with
- 30:05Speaker 6: members because we're going back into collective bargaining in a
- 30:09Speaker 6: month or so to talk about their core terms and conditions,
- 30:13Speaker 6: and they are they're desperate for more colleagues. So you know,
- 30:21Speaker 6: if less Levy and the new regional directors can show
- 30:25Speaker 6: us datus about where all these doctors are supposed to be.
- 30:30Speaker 6: We would love to see it because what we see
- 30:32Speaker 6: as people who are very stressed, who are working really hard,
- 30:36Speaker 6: and who are really concerned about their inability to give
- 30:41Speaker 6: the level of care to people who need it in
- 30:43Speaker 6: a timely fashion. So things are very difficult out there,
- 30:47Speaker 6: and so we don't have oversight as to the where
- 30:52Speaker 6: the money exactly is going in terms of these budget provisions.
- 30:55Speaker 6: But from the information I have seen, you know, a
- 30:58Speaker 6: lot of it is about paying people what they're worth.
- 31:01Speaker 6: You know, there's been a little it almost feels like
- 31:03Speaker 6: nurses are being blamed for you know, we've recruited too
- 31:05Speaker 6: many nurses too quickly. But that is a really weird
- 31:10Speaker 6: thing to say, because there are still significant gaps out there.
- 31:14Speaker 6: The fact that Healthy Zealand's been successful recruiting nurses is
- 31:17Speaker 6: a good thing and we need to put other measures
- 31:21Speaker 6: in place about the success of their health system, not
- 31:24Speaker 6: just budget.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Sarah Dalton, thank you very much for your time this morning.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 31:28Speaker 3: The Association of Salary Medical Specialists Executive Director, Sarah Dalton.
- 31:32Speaker 3: By the way, those four new heads of the regions
- 31:36Speaker 3: Northern Mark Shephard, Katherine Cronin from Midland, Robin Shearer for
- 31:41Speaker 3: Central and Martin Keo for the entire South Island. It
- 31:45Speaker 3: is seven to six.
- 31:48Speaker 4: Get ahead of the headlines, Ryan Bridge you for twenty
- 31:52Speaker 4: twenty four on early edition with Smith City, New Zealand's
- 31:55Speaker 4: furniture beds and a player store news talks, it'd be just.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Gone five to six.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Mike Hoskins in the studio, Mike, you would have heard
- 32:02Speaker 3: me ranting earlier about popcorn gate. Yes to the movies,
- 32:05Speaker 3: this family that's gone and taken there got.
- 32:08Speaker 13: The answer to that? Actually, what is it? Don't go
- 32:10Speaker 13: to the movie? I can I ask you, I can't
- 32:12Speaker 13: remember the last time I've been to a movie twenty years,
- 32:16Speaker 13: if not longer twenty years, probably longer. Well, I mean
- 32:19Speaker 13: were streaming these days? What's in a movie that you
- 32:21Speaker 13: can't stream? And what sort of movie would you have
- 32:24Speaker 13: to watch to warrant going to the movies unless it's
- 32:27Speaker 13: one of those big sea Jeppenheimer?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Oppenheimer at the.
- 32:31Speaker 13: What how long was Oppenheimer?
- 32:34Speaker 3: Wasn't that the three hours?
- 32:36Speaker 13: So you go to the movies to sit next to
- 32:38Speaker 13: someone who smells and what's meat?
- 32:40Speaker 2: Properly for three hours?
- 32:42Speaker 13: And you've paid money for that?
- 32:43Speaker 2: Not everybody smells. In fact, movies are so expensive.
- 32:46Speaker 13: Now that's the other thing. Do you know what I
- 32:50Speaker 13: watched yesterday question Time? Oh yeah, that's my sort of
- 32:55Speaker 13: I do. I my own snacks and stuff. This is
- 32:57Speaker 13: an extraordinary thing that's coming up with Pingate, and it's
- 33:01Speaker 13: sort of it's got pingate, and it's tied in with
- 33:04Speaker 13: Karen Chure who ended up in tears because she's been bullied,
- 33:07Speaker 13: and it's also tied in with a woman who wants
- 33:09Speaker 13: to be the head of a select committee but has
- 33:12Speaker 13: been denied allegedly because she's not man's right.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Yeah, there's the thing is though, do you think we
- 33:17Speaker 3: should because David Seen was obviously kicking up a big
- 33:19Speaker 3: stink saying, oh, it's racist. Do you think that's the
- 33:22Speaker 3: right game for him to be playing?
- 33:24Speaker 13: The problem with the problem with the pens. See, he's
- 33:26Speaker 13: a principal person, so he argues on principle and so
- 33:29Speaker 13: but the moment you start arguing about pins on the pearls,
- 33:32Speaker 13: then it looks real problematic. And so they didn't answer
- 33:35Speaker 13: questions in the house yesterday. He was told there's something
- 33:37Speaker 13: gone on behind the scenes because Jerry Browny was like
- 33:39Speaker 13: he was like he was Ropable there was something going
- 33:42Speaker 13: on there. Anyway, we'll talk to him and Hayden Wild
- 33:44Speaker 13: this morning. So silver medal, he's on the program as well.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Brilliant Light hosking with you next, I'm Ryan Bridge Steed
- 33:49Speaker 3: tomorrow or hanging out the Passing.
