Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party. It's the bridge to get you from one
- 0:37Speaker 1: full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard, to
- 0:39Speaker 1: dig into the dirt, and our mission is to uncover
- 0:42Speaker 1: the truth and to confront the myth and to reclaim
- 0:44Speaker 1: the story. On this bonus episode, we're taking a walk
- 0:46Speaker 1: through New York to some of the coolest rock and
- 0:48Speaker 1: roll history addresses with Bob Dylan and Sid Vicious, the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Rolling Stones, Marty Scorsese, Miles and Iggy Jackson and Nico Yoko, John,
- 0:57Speaker 1: the IRA, the FBI, and more, plus your voicemails, tech emails, comments, dms,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of Rosie. This is
- 1:04Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:06Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:08Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories
- 1:11Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind that you'll end up
- 1:13Speaker 1: telling somebody else. All Right, this goes, let's get into it, guys.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I am here, And if you're hearing an extra pep
- 1:29Speaker 1: in my step this morning, it's because I got this
- 1:31Speaker 1: new recording, sitch, and I'm really liking the way I sound.
- 1:36Speaker 1: From me honest with you. Oh, we had some Sonic
- 1:41Speaker 1: Youth noise stuck in our phones for the last couple
- 1:43Speaker 1: of weeks. We couldn't figure out what the hell it was.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I feel like we have hopefully sounds good to me. Anyways,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I hope it sounds good to you. I' psyched to
- 1:51Speaker 1: be talking to y'all. I was thinking about Sonic Youth
- 1:53Speaker 1: this morning in the context of the story that we
- 1:55Speaker 1: just told this week, and specifically about the concept of cool.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You were just the coolest. They knew they were the coolest.
- 2:03Speaker 1: They sounded the coolest, look the coolest. Didn't seem to
- 2:05Speaker 1: care if we thought they were the coolest or not either,
- 2:07Speaker 1: And you know that's a hallmark for being cool, not
- 2:09Speaker 1: giving a shit. So they weren't just one of the
- 2:11Speaker 1: coolest New York bands of all time, which is saying something.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They were one of the coolest bands of all time.
- 2:17Speaker 1: They influenced so many groups, so many artists, so many writers,
- 2:20Speaker 1: hell even podcasters like yours. Truly, there is some unfortunate scandal. Drama,
- 2:26Speaker 1: really not so much scandal. I guess I don't know.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Kind those two words are kind of they kind of
- 2:30Speaker 1: mean the same thing. At the tail end of Sonic
- 2:32Speaker 1: Youth's story, talking of course about Thurston Moore is a
- 2:35Speaker 1: fair in betrayal of his bandmate and wife, Kim Gordon,
- 2:39Speaker 1: who is beloved by fans, and that betrayal likely means
- 2:42Speaker 1: that Sonic Youth's story is indeed dead, as dead as
- 2:46Speaker 1: Nancy Spongent in the Chelsea Hotel. Nancy is never coming back,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and neither is Sonic Youth. Nancy's death, her murder by well,
- 2:55Speaker 1: we still don't know who murdered her. Most people believe
- 2:57Speaker 1: sid Vicious did it. Others believe it was drug dealer,
- 3:01Speaker 1: a fixture on the downtown scene whose name shehall go
- 3:04Speaker 1: unmentioned here in this podcast, because well, he's still out
- 3:07Speaker 1: there in any event. Nancy Spongeen's death in Room one
- 3:11Speaker 1: hundred at the Chelsea Hotel on West twenty third Street
- 3:14Speaker 1: in October nineteen seventy eight is a mythic New York
- 3:19Speaker 1: rock and roll event. Now, Nancy wasn't that influential. She
- 3:23Speaker 1: was cool, I guess, but she wasn't in a band,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and she wasn't influential in the way that Kim Gordon
- 3:29Speaker 1: from Sonic Youth was influential is influential, or in the
- 3:32Speaker 1: way that her Sex Pistols boyfriend said Vicious was influential.
- 3:36Speaker 1: She died in the Chelsea Hotel. Like I said, Now,
- 3:38Speaker 1: if you walk outside the Chelsea and you continue onto
- 3:42Speaker 1: this New York Sonic Youth cool thing walking tour that
- 3:45Speaker 1: we're about to embark upon, and you head over to
- 3:47Speaker 1: Eighth Avenue and then south for about a mile, you're
- 3:50Speaker 1: going to run into Bank Street. And that's where Sid
- 3:53Speaker 1: Vicius died. It was a couple months later, and I
- 3:57Speaker 1: believe he died from a hot shot given to him
- 3:59Speaker 1: from his mother in a mercy kill. That happened at
- 4:03Speaker 1: sixty three Bank Street in the West Village. And that happened,
- 4:07Speaker 1: like I said, a few months later, in February of
- 4:10Speaker 1: nineteen seventy nine. Now, Sid's death took place steps away
- 4:15Speaker 1: from one oh five Bank Street, and that's where John
- 4:18Speaker 1: Lennon and Yoko Ono lived between the years nineteen seventy
- 4:22Speaker 1: three and nineteen seventy five, so a couple years before
- 4:26Speaker 1: sid Visius died. On at Bank Street, John Lennon and
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yoko Owner lived there nineteen seventy three to nineteen seventy five.
- 4:34Speaker 1: This is the era when the FBI was tapping their
- 4:36Speaker 1: phone and everyone remembers John and Yoko living in the
- 4:39Speaker 1: posh Dakota building uptown, but before they fully settled into
- 4:42Speaker 1: the bourgeois lifestyle that's so angered and triggered John's assassin,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Mark David Chapman, John and Yoko slummed it in a
- 4:49Speaker 1: two room, one bedroom apartment on Bank Street. That's where
- 4:53Speaker 1: John entertained Black panthers and Ira gun runners. It's also
- 4:57Speaker 1: where he was robbed and had his TV stolen in
- 4:59Speaker 1: That really pissed John Lenon off because John Lennon loved
- 5:02Speaker 1: that TV set. He also loved his buddy Bob Dylan.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Now Bob Dylan lived a short walk away a bit
- 5:09Speaker 1: further south in the village at ninety four McDougall Street
- 5:12Speaker 1: now McDougall is where Bob was sitting on a stoop
- 5:16Speaker 1: when he spotted aj Weberman one afternoon in nineteen seventy one,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Bob chased him on foot over to Elizabeth Street and
- 5:23Speaker 1: proceeded to beat the shit out of aj Weberman. Now
- 5:27Speaker 1: Elizabeth Street is where the most rock and roll movie
- 5:30Speaker 1: director of all time grew up, Martin Scorsese. Marty based
- 5:34Speaker 1: Mean Streets on his formative experiences in that neighborhood, like
- 5:38Speaker 1: hearing the Rolling Stones is Jumping Jack Flash for the
- 5:40Speaker 1: first time Now. That song was released in nineteen sixty eight.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Thirteen years later, The Rolling Stones would film a music
- 5:47Speaker 1: video for another song, Waiting on a Friend, on an
- 5:50Speaker 1: apartment stoop, just a few blocks away at ninety six
- 5:53Speaker 1: Saint Mark's Place. Ninety six to ninety eight Saint Mark's
- 5:56Speaker 1: is also the address of the building on the cover
- 5:59Speaker 1: of Lead Zeppelin's nineteen seventy five album Physical Graffiti. Don't
- 6:04Speaker 1: ask me how that happened. I don't know. I do
- 6:06Speaker 1: know that this building is on the same block as
- 6:09Speaker 1: nineteen dashed twenty five Saint Mark's, which is where the
- 6:13Speaker 1: DOM was located. The Dom means home in Polish. The
- 6:18Speaker 1: DOM was home to the Velvet Underground in nineteen sixty six.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It's where they brought out their whip for Andy Warhol,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and it's where Jackson Brown hooked up with Nico. Nico
- 6:28Speaker 1: later hooked up with Iggy Pop when Iggy first arrived
- 6:31Speaker 1: in New York City in late nineteen sixty nine with
- 6:33Speaker 1: the Stooges. Now, if you take public transport uptown from
- 6:36Speaker 1: Saint Mark's, about sixty or so blocks on the west side,
- 6:39Speaker 1: you're going to find two ten West seventieth Street. That's
- 6:41Speaker 1: where Anganos was. Angano's was the place where Iggy Pop's
- 6:45Speaker 1: Stooges set up a multi night residency in nineteen seventy.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Miles Davis lived around the corner at three twelve West
- 6:51Speaker 1: seventy seventh. Miles saw those early Stooges shows. He was there.
- 6:55Speaker 1: He was hanging out with them backstage, Hoover and up
- 6:58Speaker 1: lines of blow Miles Davis the Stooges. Can you believe
- 7:01Speaker 1: that Miles was far fucking out? I can believe it. Miles'
- 7:04Speaker 1: Upper West Side home was nearby Birdland, which was just
- 7:07Speaker 1: south on Broadway down on fifty second Street. Birdland is
- 7:10Speaker 1: where Miles got his face beat in by a racist cop.
- 7:13Speaker 1: That was in nineteen fifty nine. New York City took
- 7:15Speaker 1: Miles's cabaret card, which effectively banned Miles from playing music
- 7:19Speaker 1: live in the city. In response, Miles headed just south
- 7:22Speaker 1: of Midtown to two oh seven East thirtieth and hold
- 7:25Speaker 1: up in Columbia's thirtieth Street Studio, And when he emerged
- 7:28Speaker 1: six months later, Miles Davis did so with a masterpiece,
- 7:32Speaker 1: Sketches of Spain, one of the coolest albums of all time.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Take that Racist Cop, And thus concludes our New York
- 7:40Speaker 1: Sonic Youth Cool Thing Walking Tour. We hope you enjoyed it.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Please remember to tip your guide on your way out,
- 7:45Speaker 1: and you can do so by becoming an all access
- 7:47Speaker 1: member of Disgraceland. And when you do, you're gonna get
- 7:50Speaker 1: Zeth and I later in this exclusive section of this
- 7:52Speaker 1: year After Party, discussing one of the wilder events for
- 7:56Speaker 1: music history, an event that I just breezed by here,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and it was that time I'm the Bob Dylan chase
- 8:01Speaker 1: down one of his stalkers and beat the piss out
- 8:03Speaker 1: of him in the middle of the day, right there
- 8:04Speaker 1: in downtown New York. Now this event is part of
- 8:07Speaker 1: our larger Bob Dylan Part two story, but it's so
- 8:11Speaker 1: insane it deserves a deeper conversation. So that's a Zeth
- 8:15Speaker 1: and I are doing today in the exclusive section of
- 8:16Speaker 1: this after party. Go to Disgray sampod dot com to
- 8:18Speaker 1: sign up and unlock exclusive content like this plus ad
- 8:22Speaker 1: free listening. All right, Sonic Youth, Thurston was there, man,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know it? Speaking of Bob Dylan and Thurston More.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Hold on, I need a break. That was a lot.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I kind of went for it. There you guys still
- 8:34Speaker 1: with me? I hope, so I need some coffee. Hang on.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I was thinking of Thurston More and Sonic Youth, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: I was thinking of all these incredible characters at the
- 8:43Speaker 1: same time in New York City, Thirst and More, Saucid Vicious,
- 8:46Speaker 1: Thirst and More. Sau said Vicious. Where was the famous
- 8:49Speaker 1: Sid show Max's Yes, he was there as I put
- 8:54Speaker 1: in our episode, and I I just loved the idea
- 8:59Speaker 1: that you have this, this this wild connection between the
- 9:02Speaker 1: modernity of Sonic Youth in the eighties, Downtown Cool to Sid,
- 9:07Speaker 1: Vicious and Nancy to John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Marty Scorsese,
- 9:14Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin. I just it's just fascinating
- 9:17Speaker 1: to me. It's all kind of right there. It's amazing
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm not telling anything anybody anything.
- 9:21Speaker 2: They don't know.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It's just when you put it in this context, it
- 9:25Speaker 1: strikes me as being incredibly compelling. Bob Dylan moved after
- 9:29Speaker 1: that event with Weberman, a J. Webman. He moved out
- 9:33Speaker 1: of New York to West Coast, to the West Coast
- 9:36Speaker 1: to Los Angeles, Malibu. That's when that part of his
- 9:39Speaker 1: life started. But of course he came back to New
- 9:43Speaker 1: York and like I said, you get thirston More there
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the eighties. I was imagining, as I was putting
- 9:50Speaker 1: this all together in my head this morning, I was
- 9:51Speaker 1: imagining Bob Dylan kicking Thurston Moore's ass. Not now, but
- 9:56Speaker 1: like in nineteen eighty five, like nineteen eighty five, thirst
- 9:59Speaker 1: and More. You know, back in the day, Thurston More
- 10:02Speaker 1: Sonic Youth is just starting to take off downtown, Thurston's
- 10:05Speaker 1: hot shit. Dylan's back in the city for whatever reason,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and he somehow encounters Thurston, who acts duche sheet to Dylan.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Maybe they're at Bleaker, Bob's arguing over who get their
- 10:15Speaker 1: hands on the vinyl copy of Sunrise Jazz and Silhouette first.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Thurston gets cute says something like, you haven't written a
- 10:20Speaker 1: good song since. Blinded by the light, Bob hauls off
- 10:23Speaker 1: cracks him right there in the experimental jazz section. Thurston
- 10:26Speaker 1: gets up, grabs a first pressing copy of Joy Divisions,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Unknown Pleasures off the wall, and he frisbees it at
- 10:31Speaker 1: Bob's head. Bob Ducks grabs a stack of Mitch Miller
- 10:34Speaker 1: records from the Discount Been hurls those at Thurston, and
- 10:36Speaker 1: then Bob just pulls up his hoodie, ducks out onto
- 10:39Speaker 1: West Third, walks away into the UH, into the into
- 10:44Speaker 1: the New York sunset. Kinda kind of wouldn't wouldn't mind
- 10:48Speaker 1: seeing that happen. It didn't happen. It's not gonna happen. Yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 1: maybe did. We don't know about it anyway? Where was I? Yes,
- 10:54Speaker 1: Sonic Youth in the feed this week coming up in
- 10:56Speaker 1: the rewind slot right after this our episode on Jazz Buckley,
- 11:01Speaker 1: our classic episode on Jeff Buckley. Then next week our
- 11:03Speaker 1: new episode on Wendy OH Williams. The Wendy O Williams episode.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It's a shocking story. It's a sad episode. It's a
- 11:10Speaker 1: revealing episode. It's a rock and roll episode, and kind
- 11:13Speaker 1: of like this episode, it's a new York episode New
- 11:15Speaker 1: York in the nineteen seventies. It's all about the cost,
- 11:19Speaker 1: the cost that artists, real artists sometimes have to pay.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Rock and roll is a filthy, fucking business and it
- 11:25Speaker 1: will break your heart if you're not careful. And when
- 11:28Speaker 1: you're listening to the Wendy o Williams episode, be thinking
- 11:30Speaker 1: about her on stage antics and think about all the
- 11:33Speaker 1: shows and concerts that you've seen in your life, maybe
- 11:36Speaker 1: some recently, maybe some back in the day, who knows,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and be thinking about what the craziest thing that you
- 11:42Speaker 1: ever saw and artist do on stage was. That's going
- 11:44Speaker 1: to be the question of the week. What's the craziest
- 11:47Speaker 1: thing you've ever seen and artist do on stage? Six
- 11:50Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail
- 11:53Speaker 1: and text. I want to know let me know. You
- 11:55Speaker 1: might hear yourself on next week's after party. Don't go anywhere, guys,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I'll be right back after this with your comments, emails, text,
- 12:02Speaker 1: voicemails and more. Six one seven nine h six sixty
- 12:20Speaker 1: six three eight voicemail and text. I'm in the phone booth.
- 12:23Speaker 1: It's the one across the hall. I'm not hanging out
- 12:26Speaker 1: with Debbie Harry she's in a VW bug with Ted
- 12:28Speaker 1: Bundy somewhere. What are we talking about? We're talking about
- 12:32Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff, guys. And that's what I love
- 12:34Speaker 1: about our conversation. It's all over the flip and map,
- 12:37Speaker 1: it's all connected to music, it's all connected to true crime.
- 12:41Speaker 1: All right, let's hear from Laura in the five eight five.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Hey, this is Laura from the five eighty five. Just
- 12:48Speaker 2: had to call you out after hearing for the third
- 12:51Speaker 2: time you ends up talk about the lyrics like Jones
- 12:55Speaker 2: on the box being from the Weight. It is not.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It is from up on Creek. So anyway, you had
- 13:02Speaker 2: me ranching the sitre this morning while I was walking
- 13:04Speaker 2: my dog, So just wanted to call you to set
- 13:07Speaker 2: the record straight. Rock and Roll.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Keep up the good work, Laura.
- 13:11Speaker 1: You're absolutely right. I I'm just going with faith here
- 13:15Speaker 1: that you're right. I know this is up on Cripple Creek.
- 13:19Speaker 1: That I meant, I could have mentioned the weight. I
- 13:22Speaker 1: meant up on Cripple Creek. Damn, man, we're talking a lot.
- 13:26Speaker 1: We're talking a lot of shit, and uh yeah, we
- 13:28Speaker 1: mess things up from time to time, as you know.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And I appreciate the correction. Thank you, Laura Spike Jones
- 13:34Speaker 1: on the box from the Great Band on their great
- 13:38Speaker 1: song The Weight written by the Staples, and I'm kidding,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I'm fucking with you, of course up on Cripple Creek.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Laura. Let's check in with the
- 13:51Speaker 1: four one four, Hey Chase, Oh man, It's so very
- 13:54Speaker 1: hard to narrow it down to just four musicians that
- 13:58Speaker 1: died too young.
- 13:59Speaker 2: So I had to make outside of the twenty seven
- 14:01Speaker 2: clubs because I feel like a lot of people know.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Those They're big names.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But that's why any wine House and Janis Joplin are
- 14:08Speaker 2: not on my list. So here we go, all right.
- 14:10Speaker 1: My four would be Otis Reddick, Dwayne Almon, Katie Klein,
- 14:16Speaker 1: and the Grievous.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Angels himself Grand Parsons.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I really enjoyed listening to the pod.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I've been listening for many, many, many years, and.
- 14:24Speaker 4: It's just a delight to be in this community with
- 14:27Speaker 4: so many other youth lovers and learn.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So much about.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Stories we may not know and some that we already do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So thanks for what you do. Four one four, Thank
- 14:35Speaker 1: you for this message. This is a great way to
- 14:37Speaker 1: think about it. You can't you can have a mount
- 14:39Speaker 1: Rushmore of artists who died too young, and you can't
- 14:42Speaker 1: use any from the twenty seven club. I love that.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And what a selection here to otis Redding, Patsy Kleine
- 14:49Speaker 1: Grand Parsons and Dwayne Almond. That's that's I'd pay to
- 14:53Speaker 1: see that. Where would we put it? Which state? All right,
- 14:56Speaker 1: let's go to the nine to seventy.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Just finish your Ian Watkins episode, which I wasn't really
- 15:04Speaker 4: sure if I wanted to listen to knowing just.
- 15:08Speaker 3: The small but most awful details of the story. I did,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and I was surprised at how much detail.
- 15:15Speaker 4: You shared, and I was getting surprised and frankly suppressed
- 15:20Speaker 4: that you were able to do so occasionally, I suppose,
- 15:25Speaker 4: is what I want to say, though it feels ought
- 15:28Speaker 4: to use.
- 15:29Speaker 5: That word, but more so in a way that.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Makes it worth talking about, helpful, productive to talk about,
- 15:37Speaker 3: because I am a not how advocate professional, and I
- 15:44Speaker 3: do believe that to protect the most vulnerable children, in
- 15:49Speaker 3: this case literal babies, things like this, as horrific as
- 15:56Speaker 3: they are to warrant.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Some full of investigation and structure. And I'm glad he's
- 16:06Speaker 5: not around anymore.
- 16:08Speaker 3: And I'm glad that we were able to discuss it in.
- 16:13Speaker 5: A way that centers the victims anyway, I guess a
- 16:21Speaker 5: great job, and thanks for sharing, all.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Right, nine seventy eight, Thanks so much. Yeah. Tough subject
- 16:28Speaker 1: and one that I avoided for a really long time,
- 16:30Speaker 1: if I'm being honest, just the subject of child abuse
- 16:33Speaker 1: in general is something that I told myself early on.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I didn't want to discuss just because I didn't want
- 16:37Speaker 1: my head in that space. And I'm not sure other
- 16:40Speaker 1: people want their heads in that space either, But I
- 16:43Speaker 1: don't know. Something about the Ian Walkins thing was was
- 16:46Speaker 1: so just compelled me to learn more and to learn more,
- 16:54Speaker 1: until finally I was like, Okay, I have to write this,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and I did, and I was very careful, as you
- 16:59Speaker 1: could hear, and I appreciate you saying so. I was
- 17:01Speaker 1: very careful with how I depicted what happened, and I
- 17:05Speaker 1: was trying to be respectful to the victims. I did
- 17:10Speaker 1: receive a couple, from being honest, a couple of angry
- 17:13Speaker 1: emails from folks, and I get it, and I get it.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I get it, I get it. I get it. But
- 17:18Speaker 1: I think that these stories, even though I don't want
- 17:21Speaker 1: to tell them, all the time. I think they do
- 17:23Speaker 1: deserve to be told, and I came at it hopefully
- 17:27Speaker 1: with the proper level of sensitivity. All right, let's go
- 17:30Speaker 1: to some texts, shall we. Lisa from the nine oh
- 17:34Speaker 1: seven right said, Hey, the blockbuster album that didn't work
- 17:37Speaker 1: for me was Dirt by Alice in Chains. I have
- 17:40Speaker 1: no better reason than my boyfriend and future ex husband
- 17:44Speaker 1: loved it. He ruined all grunge for me. Maybe I'll
- 17:49Speaker 1: be able to appreciate it in a future decade or lifetime,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but thirty years in I still can't. Lisa from the
- 17:55Speaker 1: nine oh seven I added that bit about the lifetime
- 17:58Speaker 1: Lisa just having some fun man, and this sucks. This sucks.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I would hate to have an entire genre of music
- 18:05Speaker 1: ruined for me because of a shitty X. But Lisa,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I appreciate the text. Sounds like you gotta get sense
- 18:13Speaker 1: of humor about it. All right, Well we get this really?
- 18:16Speaker 1: I love this, I love this, I love this. I'm
- 18:19Speaker 1: getting ahead of myself. This is from the four to
- 18:22Speaker 1: four to roh uh four four roh texts and Matt
- 18:25Speaker 1: Bodener are you listening, by the way? It says? Hey,
- 18:26Speaker 1: double Elvis two suggestions for possible brackets over in Patreon
- 18:31Speaker 1: Gangster Movies and Summer Songs. Loved the themes bracket and
- 18:36Speaker 1: look forward to the next one. Now four four to
- 18:38Speaker 1: Roh is referencing the bracketology the May madness that we
- 18:42Speaker 1: had over in our Patreon regarding vintage sitcom theme songs,
- 18:49Speaker 1: which that all came out of an argument that Zeth
- 18:51Speaker 1: and I had in one of our podcast conversations. It
- 18:55Speaker 1: was completely unplanned. But now that we've done it, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: we had such fun doing it, although Matt Boden and
- 19:00Speaker 1: I think he he had to take some sabbatical for
- 19:03Speaker 1: a little bit afterward because he puts so much time
- 19:06Speaker 1: and effort into it. I kind of want to do
- 19:09Speaker 1: it again, and I loved the result. I was shocked
- 19:13Speaker 1: by the passionate response from the disgraced Land listeners and
- 19:17Speaker 1: Hollywood land listeners too theme songs from television shows, and
- 19:23Speaker 1: I totally get it. It's nostalg it's nostalgia and people
- 19:26Speaker 1: that really motivates folks. But I think for four h
- 19:30Speaker 1: these two categories for future brackets, Gangster movies and summer songs.
- 19:35Speaker 1: First of all, gangster movies, I'm right in that wheelhouse,
- 19:38Speaker 1: right now I'm just I'm just consuming everything I can
- 19:41Speaker 1: get my hands on that is that is Italian mafia.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I've kind of moved beyond even all the bad shit
- 19:48Speaker 1: and now kind of moving into like checking mafia stuff
- 19:52Speaker 1: and just it's it's a whole sickness of mine, I guess.
- 19:55Speaker 1: But summer songs is great and it's apropos of course.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I love the idea. Curious what you think. Anyone else
- 20:02Speaker 1: wants to chime in, you can, I'm into it. Six
- 20:06Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Guys,
- 20:09Speaker 1: let us know what you think. If you got any
- 20:11Speaker 1: other bracketology subjects you'd like us to mine. The whole
- 20:16Speaker 1: thing too. Just back to the sitcom music thing that
- 20:19Speaker 1: we did. I've never been like a march madness guy.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I'm not into it at all. I like sports. I've
- 20:24Speaker 1: just never been in a college basket. When my whole
- 20:26Speaker 1: family does, they are they're all like and they all
- 20:28Speaker 1: get the squares and all that stuff. Not me. But
- 20:30Speaker 1: this year, I right now, actually I'm completely obsessed with
- 20:35Speaker 1: NCAA baseball. In the tournament that happened that started two
- 20:39Speaker 1: weeks ago and is still going on. We're down to
- 20:41Speaker 1: the college world series now, and I think it was
- 20:44Speaker 1: the sort of bracket madness that we started. I get
- 20:47Speaker 1: just got it in my head, and then I was like, Okay,
- 20:48Speaker 1: this is the thing I'm into now, Sure why not?
- 20:51Speaker 1: So it'd be fun to get into some gangster movie
- 20:54Speaker 1: summer songs or something else that you guys suggest again
- 20:57Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 21:00Speaker 1: voicemail and text to let us know all right The
- 21:04Speaker 1: eighth two text in Jake KB from the eight oh
- 21:07Speaker 1: two first let me say you. Owning in nineteen sixty
- 21:10Speaker 1: eight Arracuda as a teen makes me tremendously jealous. My
- 21:14Speaker 1: dream car is and always will be a seventy one
- 21:17Speaker 1: Hemi cudah and black like the one in Phantasm. My
- 21:20Speaker 1: first car was a seventy Dodge Darts Swinger I bought
- 21:23Speaker 1: for five hundred bucks in nineteen ninety. Second Jesus Build
- 21:27Speaker 1: My hot Rod is the best car song ever. Also,
- 21:30Speaker 1: I didn't know about Gibe haynes involvement on that tune.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Just had to share my thoughts on these things. Rock
- 21:34Speaker 1: a roll at eight o two, love it man, you know.
- 21:39Speaker 1: On the Hemicuda, first of all, great taste and the
- 21:44Speaker 1: all black I hear you the Dodge Dart nineteen seventy.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I don't know if I mentioned this. I bought my
- 21:52Speaker 1: sixty seven Barracuda off of my friend Dutch, who sold
- 21:55Speaker 1: it to me because he had just purchased a sixty
- 21:57Speaker 1: four Dodge Dart with the push button transmission. Just awesome
- 22:02Speaker 1: era for cars. So cool. Hey, By the way, whoever
- 22:06Speaker 1: emailed me about writing a book about cars and rock
- 22:10Speaker 1: and roll? I emailed you back, and you know, I
- 22:14Speaker 1: know you work for a real publisher, and you know
- 22:17Speaker 1: I'm I'm interested in learning more, I should say, so
- 22:20Speaker 1: get on back, all right? Two one six text in Hey,
- 22:23Speaker 1: The story of Glenn Schwarz from Pacific Gas and Electric
- 22:25Speaker 1: is a wild one. Who's a founding member that James
- 22:27Speaker 1: Gain and mentor to Joe Walsh. He went out west
- 22:30Speaker 1: to join PG and E and enjoyed the lifestyle of
- 22:33Speaker 1: a rock and roller, and then he found religion and
- 22:34Speaker 1: went over the deep edge. Benually came back here to
- 22:37Speaker 1: Cleveland and lived in his car for a while. In
- 22:40Speaker 1: that car was a nineteen sixty seven Plymouth Barracuda. No
- 22:43Speaker 1: I'm kidding. He'd play a bar in club shows here
- 22:45Speaker 1: in the later years, often with his bass playing brother
- 22:48Speaker 1: Jean was known to just break out into religious sermons
- 22:51Speaker 1: at any given moment. Uh, Glenn Schors, Pacific Gas and
- 22:56Speaker 1: Electric Interesting check that out. Thank you too. Six appreciate
- 23:01Speaker 1: it and as always, I appreciate all of you, guys.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Six one, seven, nine oh sixty sixty sixty three eight
- 23:05Speaker 1: voicemail and text at Disgracelampod on the socials disgrace Lampod
- 23:10Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. I'm want to take a quick break.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'll be back on the other side with your emails
- 23:14Speaker 1: and more. All right, guys, we are back. Happy to
- 23:29Speaker 1: be here. Disgracelampod at gmail dot com. On the email machine,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Delbert Brown sends us this email from parts unknown. What's up?
- 23:40Speaker 1: Disco's first and foremost is Lane Stay, But in true
- 23:44Speaker 1: Top five fashion artists who make me stop and listen.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Number one Lane Stay, It's a no brainer. Number two
- 23:51Speaker 1: Chris Cornell Euphouria Morning is supped on. However, his entire
- 23:54Speaker 1: discography is a lesson to any vocalist. Number three Janis Joplin,
- 23:59Speaker 1: She was incredible. Number four Freddie Mercury, I don't really
- 24:02Speaker 1: like Queen Man had some pipes on him. Number five,
- 24:05Speaker 1: David Bowie. Can many artists transport you from the streets
- 24:08Speaker 1: to utter space? Sad they aren't with us any longer,
- 24:11Speaker 1: but we are truly lucky to be able to share
- 24:12Speaker 1: the same space anytime we get to. Let one spin.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Love your work, buds, rock a rolla. That's from Delbert Brown. Delbert,
- 24:20Speaker 1: we appreciate your email, Thank you very much. Delbert's email
- 24:24Speaker 1: comes to us in response to our George Jones episode.
- 24:28Speaker 1: George Jones, he of the great country voice and the
- 24:32Speaker 1: question we asked, which artists with that golden set of
- 24:36Speaker 1: pipes makes you just stop in your tracks? Sherry Wright
- 24:40Speaker 1: writes to us again from Parts unknown. She says, Hey,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I'd love to suggest an episode on the band you
- 24:46Speaker 1: Rayah Heap. In the early seventies, they were the shit
- 24:48Speaker 1: when it came to a blend of prague and hard rock.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Their album Demons and Wizards spawned a couple of hits,
- 24:54Speaker 1: including easy Living, the track they are best known for.
- 24:56Speaker 1: The line up for that album included one of the
- 24:58Speaker 1: best male rock vocalists in my opinion, and it's a
- 25:01Speaker 1: damn shame that he and the extremely talented members are
- 25:04Speaker 1: largely unheard of by younger generations. Okay, you're Riyah Heat.
- 25:10Speaker 1: I get you, I hear you. I'm going to look
- 25:13Speaker 1: into it. I can't say that I know much about
- 25:14Speaker 1: Riyah Heat, except that I think Metallica was into them. Sherry,
- 25:17Speaker 1: thank you for the email. We appreciate you. A lot
- 25:20Speaker 1: of people write into me about Widow's Bay. I think
- 25:23Speaker 1: it comes to an end. This week, as I'm recording this,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I think, so I don't want it to end. I
- 25:29Speaker 1: don't no one else. I don't want to come to
- 25:31Speaker 1: an end these this film should be played loud podcasts
- 25:35Speaker 1: that we're making. Every time we're doing it, I look up,
- 25:38Speaker 1: it's like an hour's gone by, and I feel like
- 25:42Speaker 1: we've just barely scratched the surface of what I want
- 25:46Speaker 1: to talk about. We only do one of these a month,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and it's got to stay that way. I'm not advocating
- 25:52Speaker 1: for any more work, but I will say that I
- 25:56Speaker 1: have a blast making this show. And I've said it
- 25:58Speaker 1: before and I'll continue saying it this We played Loud
- 26:00Speaker 1: as a podcast about two of my favorite things, music
- 26:03Speaker 1: and movies. In the combination of the two. It discusses
- 26:06Speaker 1: one movie per episode and the soundtrack that accompanies that movie,
- 26:09Speaker 1: all the great needle drops, perhaps the scoring, although it's
- 26:13Speaker 1: mainly needle drops that we discussed. The last episode we
- 26:16Speaker 1: covered was on Royal Tenant Baumbs. This new episode that
- 26:20Speaker 1: we're covering is on Dazed and Confused, and we covered
- 26:24Speaker 1: this because Dazed and Confused is the ultimate last day
- 26:28Speaker 1: of school. Let's get the hell out of here, no
- 26:31Speaker 1: more teachers, no more books. Movie that you can come
- 26:34Speaker 1: up with, if there's an even close second, I'm all years.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Let me know, Matt, play the folks a clip and
- 26:41Speaker 1: share with them what they might be missing if they're
- 26:44Speaker 1: not All Access members and copying this content, which is
- 26:47Speaker 1: video content, by the way, not just audio video. Matt,
- 26:50Speaker 1: go ahead, play them a little bit. When they're chasing
- 26:53Speaker 1: the freshman through town. It's an incredible card chase. Yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 1: that's awesome. It's awesome. And dude, can we talk about
- 27:00Speaker 1: that black truck there in Well, it's great that black
- 27:02Speaker 1: truck is. I don't know what it is, but I
- 27:03Speaker 1: just I want that truck. Actually i've seen I want
- 27:05Speaker 1: to be a part of I want to be riding
- 27:07Speaker 1: in that fucking truck is what I want to be. Yeah,
- 27:08Speaker 1: in the launch chair on the back I think it's Chevy.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I can't recall. There's my wife loves old trucks, and
- 27:14Speaker 1: she's trying to convince me to buy this f three
- 27:16Speaker 1: point fifty from the nineties, which is incredible. I don't
- 27:18Speaker 1: have the nostalgia for it because it's the nineties and
- 27:20Speaker 1: it's literally the truck my stepfather used to drive, so
- 27:22Speaker 1: I can kind of do that way, but it's not way,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you know, but that chases it's too too fast on
- 27:28Speaker 1: those roads. But then later when they're actually going to
- 27:30Speaker 1: the Moon Tower and they're racing like that, that's completely authentic.
- 27:34Speaker 1: We would do that all the time. It's a bigger
- 27:35Speaker 1: road like they're earlier part when they're going there truck
- 27:38Speaker 1: chasing and they're fucking flying. Yeah, they're flying. It's crazy.
- 27:44Speaker 1: It's crazy. All right. That's this film should be played loud.
- 27:48Speaker 1: It's on Days and Confused, And that's the new episode
