- 0:26Speaker 1: his family got their first glimpse of the new Orleans
- 0:29Speaker 1: Saints facility on Tuesday. Of course, it was Monday when
- 0:34Speaker 1: Moore was introduced, or see me on Tuesday that Moore
- 0:37Speaker 1: was introduced as the new head coach. Here today on Wednesday,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Kellen Moore and his family got to tour the facility,
- 0:42Speaker 1: take in all the sites as it were there on
- 0:46Speaker 1: airline drive. And now the work really begins. Kellen Moore
- 0:49Speaker 1: will be introduced to the media eleven thirty a m.
- 0:53Speaker 1: On Thursday at his press introductory press conference, and we'll
- 0:58Speaker 1: start to get a sense of how now what Kellen
- 1:01Speaker 1: Moore's vision is to build this roster, to build the
- 1:05Speaker 1: organization and what those conversations were like with Mickey Loomis
- 1:09Speaker 1: and Gale Benson about the process to do just that.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And while obviously the first shoe things that have to happen,
- 1:17Speaker 1: he's got to build a staff. And we've already talked
- 1:19Speaker 1: about some of those names, right, Doug nus Meyer possibly
- 1:23Speaker 1: as an OC, Brandon Staley a popular name for DC.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We've talked about some of those names already, and more
- 1:28Speaker 1: will come out. The second biggest question, of course, is quarterback.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Do you bring back Derek Carr for another year, delay
- 1:39Speaker 1: your full reset a bit a bit longer, or do
- 1:42Speaker 1: you move on now, take a big cap savings this year,
- 1:46Speaker 1: decide what you're going to do moving forward. But then
- 1:49Speaker 1: after that you're going to have even more difficult decisions
- 1:53Speaker 1: with popular veteran players, and you know that is going
- 1:59Speaker 1: to be challenging for the organization and emotionally challenging for
- 2:05Speaker 1: Saints fans. For example, Ian Rappaport from NFL Media was
- 2:10Speaker 1: on The Insiders on Wednesday and effectively was asked how
- 2:15Speaker 1: the Saints can improve their offense and one of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: players he mentioned that probably is done in New Orleans
- 2:23Speaker 1: is Taysom Hill.
- 2:24Speaker 2: So much of it revolves around the quarterback position. How
- 2:27Speaker 2: they get this offense to function as efficiently as the
- 2:31Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles did. One great way to do it is
- 2:33Speaker 2: just to get a lot better players. I mean the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Saints offensive line, and they tried to rebuild through the draft.
- 2:37Speaker 2: There's been some missteps there and some players who have
- 2:40Speaker 2: flashed potential but not done it consistently. Certainly at the
- 2:43Speaker 2: receiver position. They have some weapons. Not a lot of depth,
- 2:47Speaker 2: but they have some weapons. They have a decision coming
- 2:48Speaker 2: on Taysom. No hard to imagine he'd be back in
- 2:51Speaker 2: the state in New Orleans, but I guess anything as possible.
- 2:53Speaker 2: But yeah, what do they do with Derek Carr? Do
- 2:55Speaker 2: they keep him and he's their starter? Do they release
- 2:58Speaker 2: him knowing it doesn't actually really help financially this year.
- 3:02Speaker 2: They might just want to move on, and he might
- 3:03Speaker 2: just want to move on a lot on his plate.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But yes, the right hire the right time for the Saints.
- 3:08Speaker 2: A young coach who's gonna need some time to get
- 3:10Speaker 2: this right.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So he's not entirely correct there, because they could release
- 3:15Speaker 1: Derek Carr, designate it as a post June one release
- 3:19Speaker 1: and you would get cap savings. This year, but again,
- 3:22Speaker 1: then you'd kick money into future years with Derek Carr
- 3:25Speaker 1: if you did it that way. So, for example, post
- 3:28Speaker 1: June one release would save you thirty million dollars against
- 3:35Speaker 1: the cap this year, so it is possible that you
- 3:37Speaker 1: would save money, but then you'd carry a twenty one
- 3:40Speaker 1: with Derek Carr, a twenty one million dollar dead cap
- 3:42Speaker 1: number this year and twenty eight million next year. So effectively, listen,
- 3:49Speaker 1: you're gonna feel the bront of it like there's no
- 3:51Speaker 1: avoarding it. It's do you want it all at once?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Do you want to spread it out over two years?
- 3:54Speaker 1: Is really the question that they're gonna have to answer.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But the Taysom Hill piece of it all is interesting
- 4:01Speaker 1: as well, because I'm not sure this is something that
- 4:05Speaker 1: collectively Saints fans have prepared themselves for is being done
- 4:09Speaker 1: with Taysom Hill. So when you look at cap numbers
- 4:13Speaker 1: for the New Orleans Saints next year, and look, we've
- 4:16Speaker 1: spent the last three months having the who's going to
- 4:19Speaker 1: be the next coach conversation. Now that that's done, it's okay,
- 4:23Speaker 1: how do you start to rebuild this roster conversation? And
- 4:25Speaker 1: that's where this all moves on to from here. The
- 4:28Speaker 1: most expensive player against the cap next year is Derek Carr,
- 4:31Speaker 1: followed by Cameron Jordan and then Taysom Hill. Eighteen point
- 4:35Speaker 1: two million dollars is Tasom Hill's cap hit. So we
- 4:39Speaker 1: just mentioned it with Derek Carr. The same is true
- 4:42Speaker 1: for Taysom Hill. You could you could cut Taysom Hill
- 4:49Speaker 1: with a post June first designation and it would save
- 4:52Speaker 1: you ten million dollars against the cap in twenty twenty five.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And he's got an eighteen point two million dollar cap hit.
- 5:00Speaker 1: If you cut him with a post June one designation,
- 5:02Speaker 1: that saves you ten million dollars. So his cap hit
- 5:04Speaker 1: this year would be seven to nine, next year would
- 5:07Speaker 1: be nine to seven. So you'd eat it for two
- 5:10Speaker 1: years with no Taysom Hill, and he's still counting against
- 5:13Speaker 1: your cap, but it would save you ten million this year,
- 5:17Speaker 1: which would get you within cap compliance gain you're fifty
- 5:20Speaker 1: one million dollars over the cap, so you're going to
- 5:22Speaker 1: have to do this again. The only way that you're
- 5:25Speaker 1: gonna fix all this debt. Just think about it in
- 5:29Speaker 1: terms of your life, if you got student loan debt
- 5:33Speaker 1: or I sound like Dave Ramsey now you got credit
- 5:35Speaker 1: card debt. Whatever. There's only two ways that you're gonna
- 5:38Speaker 1: get out of debt. You're gonna make more money and
- 5:41Speaker 1: you're gonna spend less money. I mean, that's the way
- 5:44Speaker 1: to do it. So it's like the cap keeps going up,
- 5:47Speaker 1: so you're gonna keep having a higher cap number, and
- 5:50Speaker 1: then you're not gonna give bad contracts, so you're gonna
- 5:52Speaker 1: be able to start hammering out that debt. Well, Taysom
- 5:54Speaker 1: Hill and Derek Carr and all his say is that's
- 5:56Speaker 1: debt on your roster. You gotta get rid of them all,
- 5:59Speaker 1: Cam Jordan, you gotta get rid of all that so
- 6:01Speaker 1: you can start to be within cap compliance and operate
- 6:04Speaker 1: with a surplus. You can go spend in free agency.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Like I'm not an economics major, but this is easy
- 6:09Speaker 1: math to do, and how it all works out and
- 6:11Speaker 1: the way they're going to go. They were willing to
- 6:13Speaker 1: buy on credit for years to give Drew Brees a
- 6:17Speaker 1: chance to win a Super Bowl. Well guess what now
- 6:19Speaker 1: the credit card companies are calling because the debt is
- 6:21Speaker 1: due and there are no way around it. You got
- 6:24Speaker 1: to pay it. So the interesting thing about Taysom Hill
- 6:27Speaker 1: is He's coming off of devastating knee injury suffered in December.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He's probably not even going to be ready to play
- 6:35Speaker 1: for you until October. And that's not even to say
- 6:38Speaker 1: he'd be full strength, full speed, one hundred percent Taysom
- 6:41Speaker 1: Hill in October. That's what he'd likely be back on
- 6:43Speaker 1: the field. So is it worth carrying an eighteen million
- 6:49Speaker 1: dollar cap hit for Taysom Hill this year for a
- 6:52Speaker 1: guy that probably won't even compete for you for the
- 6:54Speaker 1: first month and a half two months of the season.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And this is also a guy that's going to be
- 6:59Speaker 1: going into his age thirty five season. Remember Taysom Hill.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You know he'll be he'll be thirty five in August.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You know, this is a guy who's been in the
- 7:09Speaker 1: NFL since twenty eighteen. And while his career by years
- 7:13Speaker 1: hasn't been supremely long, seven seven NFL seasons. Uh, he's
- 7:20Speaker 1: older because he's went to b YU, he's a Mormon,
- 7:23Speaker 1: went on his his LDS mission, and so he's older.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So you got a thirty five year old guy coming
- 7:29Speaker 1: off a terrible knee injury. Do you really want to
- 7:32Speaker 1: have that wrapped up into him? And look, Taysom Hill
- 7:34Speaker 1: was very good this year, you know, the last each
- 7:36Speaker 1: of the last three years he's averaged eight yards of
- 7:38Speaker 1: carry eight point six, eight point eight, eight point one. Like,
- 7:42Speaker 1: he's still a very productive player when he's been on
- 7:44Speaker 1: the field for you, but he's coming off a knee injuries,
- 7:48Speaker 1: thirty five years old, he's expensive. These are the types
- 7:50Speaker 1: of decisions that you're going to have to make. And
- 7:52Speaker 1: you heard Dean Rapaport say it there hard to imagine
- 7:56Speaker 1: Taysom Hill's back next year. So that's another one you
- 7:59Speaker 1: need to start wrapping your head around that could be gone.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The other thing I'll factor into is we don't know
- 8:03Speaker 1: what Kellen Moore's offensive vision would be for a guy
- 8:06Speaker 1: like Taysom Hill. Now, it is fair to mention when
- 8:11Speaker 1: Sean Payden called plays, he made it work with Taysom Hill,
- 8:13Speaker 1: When Pete Carmichael called plays, he made it work with
- 8:15Speaker 1: Taysom Mill. When Clen kubi At call plazy made it
- 8:17Speaker 1: work with Taysom Mill. When you have a guy that's
- 8:19Speaker 1: that versatile, you could be creative with him and he's
- 8:22Speaker 1: going to find a role within your offense. So I
- 8:24Speaker 1: have no doubt that Kellen Moore could do the same thing. However,
- 8:27Speaker 1: it is fair to mention that it's a new head coach,
- 8:30Speaker 1: a new scheme, a new system, maybe a new quarterback.
- 8:33Speaker 1: How would it all work together? And is it worth
- 8:34Speaker 1: eighteen million dollars next year? So just start to wrap
- 8:37Speaker 1: your head around this thought that guys like Taysom Hill,
- 8:41Speaker 1: some veteran players who have been core pieces of this
- 8:43Speaker 1: franchise for a long time now, probably aren't going to
- 8:46Speaker 1: be back for cap saving purposes. And also as Kellen
- 8:51Speaker 1: Moore starts to build this roster in the image and
- 8:53Speaker 1: idea of what he wants it to be. But we'll
- 8:55Speaker 1: get a much better sense of what that vision is
- 8:58Speaker 1: when Kellen Moore meets with reporters on Thursday,
