- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He is
- 0:21Speaker 3: Paul Pabst. All right, Paul, what do we got on tap?
- 0:23Speaker 4: Oh, we got warm takes on the Texas Longhorns, warm
- 0:25Speaker 4: takes on USC and Lincoln Riley versus Oregon, and What
- 0:29Speaker 4: are the New York Giants going to do now, now
- 0:30Speaker 4: that Jackson Dart is out for the season, maybe the
- 0:33Speaker 4: regular season, maybe the postseason?
- 0:35Speaker 5: Where do they pivot?
- 0:36Speaker 3: We'll see. I got lots of quarterback news. Do you
- 0:38Speaker 3: want good or bad to start?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Okay, yesterday on Not So Fast, we started and broke
- 0:41Speaker 4: some quarterback news about Jackson Dart, and that was a
- 0:43Speaker 4: negative day.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Let's go positive.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Okay, let's go to Seattle then, where Sam Darnold is
- 0:48Speaker 3: on track to play this Sunday against the Commanders. So funny,
- 0:52Speaker 3: it's a defending champion, Super Bowl, and no one cares.
- 0:56Speaker 4: It's funny that no one is talking about Sam Darnold
- 0:58Speaker 4: probably going back, the defending Super Bowl champion quarterback. I
- 1:01Speaker 4: think it's double good news for Seattle because Darnold is healthy.
- 1:05Speaker 4: It looked like it could be a hip injury, which
- 1:06Speaker 4: could be ongoing.
- 1:08Speaker 5: It's a glute. That's called your butt. And it seems
- 1:10Speaker 5: to be fine.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Here's the bonus for the Seahawks. You found out that
- 1:14Speaker 4: Drew Locke is more than serviceable and maybe threatening. Usually
- 1:18Speaker 4: your quarterbacks are either serviceable or threatening. Sounds like a
- 1:20Speaker 4: band name. But he was pretty good. And I think
- 1:23Speaker 4: other teams now look at Drew Locke and say to themselves,
- 1:26Speaker 4: you know, it's not a second-string quarterback.
- 1:28Speaker 5: It's just the second-best quarterback on the roster. And this
- 1:30Speaker 5: guy could do some damage.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he might not even be that far
- 1:33Speaker 3: behind Darnold. Darnold was basically Drew Locke a few years ago,
- 1:37Speaker 3: and Darnold just came out of nowhere. I know why
- 1:39Speaker 3: he's coming back. Do you want to hear the reason?
- 1:40Speaker 3: Go ahead. Because he's playing the Commanders. So I pulled
- 1:43Speaker 3: up his line last year when Seattle played Washington. Sam
- 1:46Speaker 3: Darnold was 21 for 24, 330 yards passing, and four TDs.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Sam's like, I'm not missing this game. I've got to
- 1:53Speaker 3: pad my stats.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I remember this game specifically, and he was licking his
- 1:57Speaker 4: chops the whole game. I think in the first half,
- 1:59Speaker 4: he had three touchdowns, and the commanders aren't any better.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They have Marcus Mariota. They have their own quarterback situation.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Who's a decent backup? But Sam, like you said, he
- 2:07Speaker 4: doesn't want to miss this one.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Well, that's why I was wondering. They could easily afford
- 2:09Speaker 3: to sit Sam in this game and win the game,
- 2:12Speaker 3: go with Drew Locke. But they don't seem to be
- 2:14Speaker 3: that concerned about Darnold's health.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I would say out in the NFC, you can't afford
- 2:17Speaker 4: to pass on a weekend. I think you're trying to
- 2:19Speaker 4: get home field advantage. And with the Rams and the 49ers,
- 2:22Speaker 4: that one loss or that one pass on a win
- 2:25Speaker 4: could be the difference between... being on the road in
- 2:27Speaker 4: the NFC title game, and home for the NFC title.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Also, it is East Coast 1 o'clock time, but I
- 2:31Speaker 3: looked at last year. Seattle traveled East seven or eight times,
- 2:35Speaker 3: dominated every game. They don't have a problem going East
- 2:37Speaker 3: because they're a physical defense team. They're not a West
- 2:40Speaker 3: Coast finesse team. So, like everybody, I'm not sure this
- 2:43Speaker 3: makes a huge impact. I was going to pick the
- 2:44Speaker 3: Seahawks against the Commanders with Drew Locke or Sam Darnold.
- 2:47Speaker 4: And a lot of people liked the Commanders going into
- 2:49Speaker 4: this year because Jayden Daniels two years ago was fantastic,
- 2:52Speaker 4: and now it's like last year all over again.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Okay. Okay. We also have some possibly bad news on
- 2:57Speaker 3: the quarterback front. It's Chicago Bears, but we don't really
- 3:00Speaker 3: know what's happening. It could be Caleb Williams comes back
- 3:02Speaker 3: for Monday night. It could be Tyson Bajan's out of
- 3:05Speaker 3: concussion protocol, or it could be my guy Case Keenum starting. Paul,
- 3:09Speaker 3: you're a Bears fan. What should they do?
- 3:11Speaker 5: I think this is a great news week for Chicago
- 3:13Speaker 5: Bears fans. Again, if you go back to.
- 3:14Speaker 4: When Caleb Williams went down and the Pope almost had
- 3:17Speaker 4: to lay hands on him to get him back, the
- 3:19Speaker 4: fact that he might miss one week and hasn't even
- 3:21Speaker 4: been declared out for that week We've seen this 100 times,
- 3:25Speaker 4: 2,000 if you have the Internet. And at very worst,
- 3:28Speaker 4: he's out a game or two. Tyson Bajent might be
- 3:31Speaker 4: the bigger problem. He's in the concussion protocol. But I
- 3:34Speaker 4: think the bigger picture is the Bears were ready for
- 3:36Speaker 4: this at the quarterback position for a guy who doesn't
- 3:39Speaker 4: get hurt. Bajent was there. And Case Keenum is kind
- 3:41Speaker 4: of that player-coach era of his football career. But it's
- 3:44Speaker 4: not a guy who's going to embarrass you. I don't
- 3:46Speaker 4: think Case Keenum can have a Jameis Winston-type game like
- 3:50Speaker 4: Jameis did.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Absolutely. The Eagles defense has been pretty salty the first
- 3:54Speaker 3: two games. Really, the only thing that anybody's done against
- 3:56Speaker 3: them is quarterbacks running. Case is not going to run.
- 3:59Speaker 3: That's the issue. But Caleb isn't going to be able
- 4:01Speaker 3: to run with his hamstring either. This is a game
- 4:03Speaker 3: to me where you might sit Caleb Williams because you
- 4:05Speaker 3: don't want Jalen Carter coming after him. Is it that
- 4:08Speaker 3: necessary to get him out there?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Besides Jalen Carter, what's the pass rush for the Eagles
- 4:12Speaker 4: these days?
- 4:12Speaker 3: Pass rush is hit and miss.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Hit and miss.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, it really comes up in the middle
- 4:17Speaker 3: with Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. So that's going to
- 4:19Speaker 3: be a problem. Cam Ward ran around a lot, but
- 4:23Speaker 3: he's young and healthy. So I don't know that Caleb,
- 4:26Speaker 3: if he's out there, is going to want to do that.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Well, I think this goes back to the Bears being
- 4:29Speaker 4: prepared at the quarterback position early in the season and
- 4:31Speaker 4: the New York Giants not being prepared. They had no
- 4:34Speaker 4: third-string emergency quarterback on the roster versus the Rams. Jameis
- 4:37Speaker 4: Winston stunk the joint up. They were in that game
- 4:39Speaker 4: with a couple turnovers. If they had a third string,
- 4:41Speaker 4: I think the wide receiver return man Braxton Berrios was
- 4:45Speaker 4: their emergency quarterback.
- 4:46Speaker 5: That's not good.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and the Bears pay Tyson Bazard. I mean, not
- 4:49Speaker 3: many teams are paying a second string and a third
- 4:51Speaker 3: string quarterback as much as the Bears. I heard an
- 4:53Speaker 3: interesting take on Caleb Williams. Tell me what you think
- 4:55Speaker 3: of this. Oh, boy. If he's injured and he's going
- 4:58Speaker 3: to be a little bit hampered all season long, won't
- 5:00Speaker 3: be able to run, that might help him long-term to
- 5:03Speaker 3: learn how to pass out of the pocket. Because Caleb
- 5:05Speaker 3: does like to run to the right and look for
- 5:08Speaker 3: something downfield instead of taking the pass right in front
- 5:10Speaker 3: of him.
- 5:10Speaker 4: So you're saying not so fast. There is such thing
- 5:12Speaker 4: as a good injury or an upside to an injury?
- 5:14Speaker 3: Possible.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Well, Caleb is more of a scrambler, keep plays alive
- 5:18Speaker 4: than a runner like a Vic or Lamar Jackson.
- 5:21Speaker 5: But his escapability is the thing.
- 5:23Speaker 3: He runs a lot, Paul.
- 5:25Speaker 4: He runs a lot, but he doesn't run dumb. I'm
- 5:27Speaker 4: not saying Josh Allen runs dumb.
- 5:29Speaker 3: You saw the highlight. He just got hurt running out
- 5:32Speaker 3: to try and avoid a tackle.
- 5:33Speaker 4: He was barely running. He was trotting to the first
- 5:35Speaker 4: down there. I'm just saying, Caleb Williams is not a
- 5:37Speaker 4: contact guy.
- 5:38Speaker 5: He's not a guy.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Remember Jimmy Garoppolo years ago taking on contact or Andrew
- 5:42Speaker 4: Luck early in his career? He doesn't look for the contact.
- 5:44Speaker 4: He's more of a Russell Wilson guy. with more escapability.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Yeah, but when you run, you never know what's going
- 5:49Speaker 3: to happen. All right, so you're optimistic about the Bears.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I'm pretty optimistic. Now, there is a thing in sports
- 5:53Speaker 4: media that you must do. It's a mandatory thing second
- 5:56Speaker 4: week of the season. The 0-2 team that's going to
- 5:59Speaker 4: make the playoffs and the 2-0 team that's going to
- 6:01Speaker 4: miss the playoffs.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Now, Pearl, we all know the stat.
- 6:04Speaker 4: If you go 2-0, you're likely going to the playoffs,
- 6:06Speaker 4: and 0-2, it's like 80% chance you're not.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Now, is this still true with the expanded schedule? You know,
- 6:12Speaker 3: all the numbers are a little bit off.
- 6:13Speaker 5: I didn't chop up the numbers, but let's start with,
- 6:15Speaker 5: how about this? We'll start with the graphic. 2-0 teams.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Let's take a look at them, Perloff. I don't know
- 6:19Speaker 5: what you're picking. You don't know what I'm picking.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Bills, Bengals, Eagles, Seahawks. Raiders, Chiefs, Vikings, Niners. You go first.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Who's not making the playoffs? Who's not making the playoffs? Well,
- 6:30Speaker 3: it's obviously not going to be the Bills. Obviously not
- 6:33Speaker 3: going to be my Eagles or the Seahawks. It seems
- 6:35Speaker 3: pretty obvious. I'm going to take the low-hanging fruit, the
- 6:38Speaker 3: Las Vegas Raiders.
- 6:40Speaker 5: You were high on the Raiders.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I love the Raiders.
- 6:42Speaker 4: You love the Raiders, but they're not going to make
- 6:45Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I just threw my pen off camera by accident. That
- 6:48Speaker 3: was a hot take. Okay, the Raiders have the sixth
- 6:49Speaker 3: hardest remaining schedule. They have the NFC West on their schedule, Paul.
- 6:53Speaker 3: They have a lot of hard games. They've got the Patriots.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So you like, don't love them?
- 6:56Speaker 3: No, I like what they're doing. I like the direction
- 6:58Speaker 3: they're going. There's no way they're going to get through
- 6:59Speaker 3: this schedule and make the playoffs. They're in the AFC
- 7:01Speaker 3: West with Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Explain
- 7:05Speaker 3: to me exactly what their path is. They're not winning
- 7:08Speaker 3: the division, and with that hard schedule, it's going to
- 7:10Speaker 3: be too hard to get enough wins for the wild card.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Before my pick, if you're a Raiders fan, do you
- 7:14Speaker 5: want to make the playoffs?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, now you do.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Like a wild card when you get bounced?
- 7:19Speaker 3: Why? You're not drafting a quarterback. You just took Fernando Mendoza,
- 7:21Speaker 3: number one overall. Why would you not want to be good?
- 7:23Speaker 4: But if you keep winning and stay relevant and stay
- 7:25Speaker 4: in the playoff hunt, you don't see Mendoza one snap
- 7:27Speaker 4: this year.
- 7:28Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 7:29Speaker 5: That is fine.
- 7:29Speaker 3: This is the Las Vegas Raiders, Paul. How often do
- 7:31Speaker 3: they make the playoffs? One year with Derek Carr? Are
- 7:34Speaker 3: you kidding me?
- 7:34Speaker 4: All right, who do you got? My 2-0 team that
- 7:36Speaker 4: will not make the playoffs, I'm going with the Vikings.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I think the Vikings are quality, and they're a decent team.
- 7:41Speaker 4: I just think that division is going to get chewed up.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Bringing Kyler Murray back to me is... It's almost an obligation.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I don't know if it's the right football decision. I
- 7:49Speaker 4: don't know if he's more stable at the quarterback position
- 7:52Speaker 4: than Carson Wentz, and I think you agree with me.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Carson Wentz, to me, is like a safe B-level quarterback.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Kyler Murray is a D one day and an A
- 8:01Speaker 4: the other, and you can't win that division where every
- 8:04Speaker 4: game is tough that way. I think the Vikings will
- 8:06Speaker 4: stay afloat for a while, but they're going to get
- 8:08Speaker 4: chewed up late.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they have a great roster around their quarterback. I
- 8:11Speaker 3: think Brian Flores, probably the best defensive coordinator in the NFL.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I still like them as a team.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I just don't think that Kyler Murray is the guy
- 8:17Speaker 4: who will win a late game for you.
- 8:19Speaker 5: He was more likely to lose a late game for you.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he came out, and I think his first pass
- 8:23Speaker 3: with the Vikings was an interception.
- 8:25Speaker 5: He set the bar nice and low.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And also, he could get hurt again. But you do
- 8:28Speaker 3: have Carson Wentz behind there. You know, I'm not going
- 8:31Speaker 3: to back you on this one. I think Minnesota could
- 8:33Speaker 3: get to 10 wins no matter who's playing quarterback. This
- 8:35Speaker 3: is a really good coaching staff.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Okay, if you're picking Minnesota to make the playoffs, give
- 8:39Speaker 4: me your two teams for the NFC North that won't
- 8:41Speaker 4: make the playoffs.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Wow, the Packers and Lions. Really? Really.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Lions, the Windows.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Actually, and the Bears, maybe not either.
- 8:49Speaker 4: If the Vikings make it and nobody else makes it,
- 8:50Speaker 4: that would be the call of the year by you, Perloff.
- 8:52Speaker 4: All right, let's go to the 0-2 team that doesn't,
- 8:56Speaker 4: does make the playoffs.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Okay, 0-2 team. Again, here's the list here. Obviously, we're
- 9:01Speaker 3: not putting the Dolphins. We're not putting the Commanders.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Wasn't it a waste of time to build the Dolphins
- 9:06Speaker 5: in that graphic?
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to go with the obvious one again.
- 9:08Speaker 3: At least it seems obvious to me. Of course, it's
- 9:10Speaker 3: the Houston Texans.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:12Speaker 3: In part because everyone picked them to go deep into
- 9:14Speaker 3: the playoffs. But they've had a tough start to the
- 9:17Speaker 3: schedule with Cincinnati and Buffalo on their schedule. They were
- 9:20Speaker 3: right there with the Bills, who are arguably the best
- 9:22Speaker 3: team in the NFL. And the Bengals, their defense got hot.
- 9:28Speaker 3: But the issue with the Texans is Nico Collins has
- 9:30Speaker 3: not been out. He never is? Yeah, but he might
- 9:32Speaker 3: be back week three or four. Their whole offense depends
- 9:35Speaker 3: on their number one receiver. And TJ Stroud has not
- 9:37Speaker 3: played bad. This defense is still awesome. Tough schedule a
- 9:41Speaker 3: little bit, but I think that they get some easy
- 9:43Speaker 3: wins against teams like Cleveland, and they find a way
- 9:46Speaker 3: to at least make the wild card with maybe the
- 9:48Speaker 3: Jags winning that division.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Their defense really concerns me because that was supposed to
- 9:51Speaker 4: be the best defense in the NFL, the most threatening
- 9:54Speaker 4: defense in the NFL to Texans.
- 9:56Speaker 5: And if they're not doing it, C.J. Stroud does not
- 9:58Speaker 5: show flashes of C.J.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Stroud.
- 10:00Speaker 5: From three years.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, they did hold the Bengals to 20 points. It's
- 10:02Speaker 3: not like Joe Burrow lit them up. Josh Allen did
- 10:04Speaker 3: light them up. But I think their defense is going
- 10:07Speaker 3: to round into form. C.J. Stroud looks fine. I don't
- 10:10Speaker 3: know why people are ripping him. He just has nobody
- 10:12Speaker 3: to throw to.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Fine is a rough word when you're talking about quarterbacks.
- 10:15Speaker 4: When my wife comes up and says, what do you
- 10:16Speaker 4: think of this dress? If I say fine.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I'm in a lot of trouble.
- 10:19Speaker 3: If he was fine in last year's playoffs, Paul, Houston
- 10:22Speaker 3: Texans would have been in the AFC title game and
- 10:24Speaker 3: might have been the Super Bowl. But he was awful.
- 10:25Speaker 3: So that's why I'm taking fine.
- 10:27Speaker 5: If you're aspiring to be fine as a quarterback, I
- 10:29Speaker 5: worry about things.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Okay, my 0-2 team that makes the playoffs, I begrudgingly
- 10:33Speaker 4: am going with the Falcons.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Here's why.
- 10:35Speaker 4: They stunk up the joint. I mean the joint being
- 10:37Speaker 4: Earth the first couple weeks of the season. The Falcons,
- 10:40Speaker 4: the two quarterbacks who played, not Tua, not Penix, a
- 10:44Speaker 4: couple guys you barely know and you shouldn't know because
- 10:46Speaker 4: they're awful.
- 10:47Speaker 5: And you have Drake London.
- 10:48Speaker 4: You have Pitts. You have Bijan Robinson. And you could
- 10:52Speaker 4: put together 16 points.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Perloff, you could have scored a couple points with this team.
- 10:56Speaker 4: It gets tougher, but I think the Falcons are generally
- 10:59Speaker 4: a quality team, and they have a decent defense and
- 11:02Speaker 4: a lot of skilled position players. I like that Penix
- 11:05Speaker 4: didn't start early before he was physically ready. And I
- 11:07Speaker 4: think that I'm calling out the division. Saints are a
- 11:10Speaker 4: nice story. The Panthers are a nice story. I think
- 11:13Speaker 4: there's going to be a battle, and I could see
- 11:15Speaker 4: the Falcons riding the ship tonight against Green Bay.
- 11:17Speaker 5: That's a teaser.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And Michael Penix, who everyone likes as a quarterback. They
- 11:21Speaker 4: just don't like his knees.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Oh, man. I don't know, Paul.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Go back to college. People love this guy.
- 11:26Speaker 3: No, I love Penix. I'm just talking about the Falcons
- 11:28Speaker 3: in general. I think Kevin Stefanski has been a little
- 11:31Speaker 3: bit exposed, the head coach, the first two weeks. Are
- 11:33Speaker 3: you sure, even with panics, they can win enough games
- 11:36Speaker 3: to make the playoffs?
- 11:36Speaker 4: That's another reason I like them, because Stefanski's seen bad
- 11:39Speaker 4: teams before. He knows bad football. This guy's an expert
- 11:41Speaker 4: on coaching bad football teams.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Yeah, but he loses a lot of those games with
- 11:45Speaker 3: bad football teams.
- 11:45Speaker 5: But now he has a decent team around him.
- 11:47Speaker 4: I think they're going to be okay-ish, but the bar
- 11:50Speaker 4: has been set so low, so early, everyone's off.
- 11:52Speaker 5: If there was a Falcons bandwagon, nobody stayed on it.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Well, it's funny. I actually looked at the Bucs at
- 11:57Speaker 3: 0-2 because I had the same thought. NFC South, you
- 11:59Speaker 3: win eight games, you're probably in the playoffs. Why not
- 12:02Speaker 3: the Bucs?
- 12:03Speaker 5: I was coin flipping that one.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:04Speaker 4: And the Bucks disappoint me more. And they are more
- 12:07Speaker 4: known to disappoint me the past couple years. They find
- 12:09Speaker 4: a way to be down at halftime, get it close,
- 12:12Speaker 4: and then lose at the end.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I guess one team has to
- 12:16Speaker 3: make the playoffs. New Orleans to me, if I want
- 12:18Speaker 3: to do a mulligan, I'm picking New Orleans, but you're
- 12:20Speaker 3: not there.
- 12:21Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I'm not. And we checked the box, 0-2, 2-0,
- 12:24Speaker 5: mandatory in sports.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's 75% and 16%, Paul.
- 12:27Speaker 5: You might be making those up.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Could be. All right, coming up next on Not So Fast,
- 12:31Speaker 3: we dive into an exciting college football weekend. What is
- 12:34Speaker 3: the game of the weekend? Paul and I will debate.
- 12:36Speaker 3: That's next, Not So Fast.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Pearl, it's time for the midday pick-me-up. Here we go.
- 12:42Speaker 5: A little baseball. Let's go out to Seattle. Great unis
- 12:44Speaker 5: out there. You know that. Bango. That's Josh Naylor. No
- 12:49Speaker 5: problem there. Getting the win. Nice win for Seattle. Walk-off.
- 12:52Speaker 5: The fans are going crazy. Now, they stave off elimination.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Checking my notes, they have a. 1 chance to make
- 12:59Speaker 5: the playoffs. Everybody has to lose, and they have to
- 13:01Speaker 5: win out.
- 13:02Speaker 3: That doesn't seem likely to me, Paul.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Not likely, but we're saying there's a chance.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Wow. The fans are into it. I like this. That's
- 13:09Speaker 3: the whole point of the wild card, to keep everybody alive,
- 13:11Speaker 3: but this is not really too alive.
- 13:12Speaker 4: We are the official show of Seattle sports today. Darnold
- 13:15Speaker 4: and Josh Naylor, look at us. All right, it's time
- 13:18Speaker 4: for some warm takes. Pabst and Perloff, I'm going to
- 13:20Speaker 4: get you going. I'm going to start off, Perloff. My
- 13:22Speaker 4: first warm take is this. College football this weekend, heck
- 13:25Speaker 4: of a slate. There's a lot of good games down
- 13:27Speaker 4: in Knoxville, a lot of places. Oregon-USC this weekend is
- 13:30Speaker 4: a great game. It may not be a great game itself.
- 13:33Speaker 5: We don't know. But Oregon, they started a little slow.
- 13:35Speaker 5: They righted the ship. They should be okay. Here's the thing.
- 13:38Speaker 5: USC football. They're 4-0 right now.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Now, it's a shaky 4-0 because of the teams they beat.
- 13:44Speaker 4: We don't have to get into it, but they barely
- 13:46Speaker 4: got by Rutgers.
- 13:46Speaker 5: No offense.
- 13:48Speaker 4: USC football has not been national title relevant in about
- 13:51Speaker 4: six years. And that's a long stretch for them. Remember
- 13:54Speaker 4: the Clay Harbor days? Lincoln Riley was brought there from
- 13:57Speaker 4: Oklahoma to win national titles.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Not to be decent. Not to win seven games. And
- 14:01Speaker 5: this is it. You're 4-0.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You got Oregon. Oregon's not the Oregon that we thought
- 14:06Speaker 4: they were. You win on Saturday, you're in position. You'll
- 14:09Speaker 4: be talked about on national shows like this, the Dan
- 14:11Speaker 4: Patrick Show, all over the place.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Maybe game day will come back out there.
- 14:15Speaker 4: But if you lose to Oregon, you're in a big
- 14:16Speaker 4: jam because it gets a lot tougher.
- 14:18Speaker 5: You have Ohio State later this season. You have Penn
- 14:20Speaker 5: State in two weeks. You have Indiana.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Remember, can you imagine a world where I'd say, USC
- 14:25Speaker 4: has to be scared of going into Bloomington?
- 14:27Speaker 5: Yeah, you do. Because they'll be favorited. USC football, Lincoln-Riley,
- 14:31Speaker 5: this is it.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Take down Oregon, take down Penn State in two weeks,
- 14:34Speaker 4: and then we'll start talking about you again because we
- 14:36Speaker 4: haven't in a long, long time.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I totally agree, but let me ask you something. Everything
- 14:40Speaker 3: we learned in the first three weeks of college football,
- 14:42Speaker 3: are we sure that's actually what's happening in college football?
- 14:45Speaker 3: I think Oregon might be great or they might be bad.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I don't care too much about the week one and
- 14:50Speaker 3: two results.
- 14:50Speaker 5: Yeah, probably not, but USC is not in that tenuous place.
- 14:53Speaker 4: I think they're ranked 12th right now, and that is
- 14:55Speaker 4: a soft 12 because San Jose State's Fresno State, that
- 15:00Speaker 4: doesn't help you very much. But they have a great
- 15:02Speaker 4: freshman class. What they don't have is a great junior
- 15:05Speaker 4: and senior class.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Right. They look terrible against Rutgers. There's no way around it.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Yeah, so beat Oregon. We'll talk about you again.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Or.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Lose to Oregon, then Oregon turns out to be great,
- 15:15Speaker 3: then beat Ohio State. But I hear what you're saying.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I don't hear what you're saying. All right, I'm going
- 15:18Speaker 3: to pick another glamour program, Paul, and that's the Texas Longhorns. Now,
- 15:22Speaker 3: Donald Trump will go to see Texas at Tennessee this
- 15:25Speaker 3: weekend at noon, number one versus number 14, and I'm
- 15:28Speaker 3: not surprised. Last week, the media made a massive deal
- 15:32Speaker 3: out of LSU Ole Miss. But, Paul, which do you
- 15:34Speaker 3: think rated higher, Texas Ohio State or LSU Ole Miss?
- 15:37Speaker 5: Texas Ohio State.
- 15:38Speaker 3: By many, many millions. I cheated.
- 15:40Speaker 5: I looked it up.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So, Texas has Arch Manning, obviously. I think Texas is
- 15:44Speaker 3: the premier program in college football. They have a bit
- 15:47Speaker 3: of a Dallas Cowboys feel. I'll even say it. There's
- 15:50Speaker 3: something about Sark, the entire program, the colors, the history.
- 15:54Speaker 3: People love when the Texas Longhorns are good at football. So,
- 15:58Speaker 3: I think no matter who they're playing, they are a
- 16:00Speaker 3: must-watch TV. Then you add in Arch Manning, forget about it.
- 16:03Speaker 3: They are... The Glamour team in college football right now,
- 16:06Speaker 3: they're the team you must watch. It's going to be
- 16:08Speaker 3: a great game against Tennessee. Now, Tennessee's got a young quarterback.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Texas has no excuse to lose. A lot of big-time
- 16:15Speaker 3: SEC games coming up. I think Texas is going to
- 16:17Speaker 3: outrate everybody throughout the year. And the best thing for
- 16:20Speaker 3: the sport would be for Texas to make the playoff
- 16:23Speaker 3: and do something. Paul, what do you think?
- 16:24Speaker 4: Yeah, we talked about that a couple weeks on Not
- 16:26Speaker 4: So Fast. The ideal thing would be Notre Dame-Texas. That
- 16:29Speaker 4: would be a fantastic national title game. Lots of star power,
- 16:32Speaker 4: lots of alums. The Manning family name goes a long way.
- 16:35Speaker 4: My kids know the Manning family.
- 16:36Speaker 3: They know who Arch is. 100%.
- 16:37Speaker 4: My children know who Arch Manning is, not just the
- 16:40Speaker 4: older Mannings. So he crosses over, and that's where a
- 16:43Speaker 4: lot of those ratings come from. Texas is a national brand.
- 16:45Speaker 4: So is Ohio State. But you throw a Manning in there,
- 16:48Speaker 4: everyone knows who he is.
- 16:49Speaker 3: You know, I think a good debate would be Ohio
- 16:50Speaker 3: State versus Notre Dame. Because Ohio State also does massive
- 16:53Speaker 3: numbers every time they play. Those, to me, are like
- 16:56Speaker 3: three NFL teams as far as nationwide interest.
- 16:59Speaker 5: And going back to USC, a generation ago, USC was
- 17:01Speaker 5: one of those teams.
- 17:02Speaker 3: USC used to be.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Leinert, Bush, Lendell, White, all those guys, they were the
- 17:05Speaker 5: pros of Los Angeles.
- 17:06Speaker 3: I'd say Alabama is the fourth team in that mix.
- 17:09Speaker 3: And Georgia's not far behind.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Not far behind.
- 17:11Speaker 4: All right, let me get to my next warm take.
- 17:12Speaker 4: It has been a weird week of Chicago sports. Caleb
- 17:15Speaker 4: Williams gets hurt, then he's not so hurt. But it's
- 17:17Speaker 4: been a really weird week for the Chicago media. And
- 17:20Speaker 4: I watch a lot of it. I listen to a
- 17:21Speaker 4: lot of it. They went from being glad that their quarterback,
- 17:24Speaker 4: if you've seen this play possibly a hundred times, they
- 17:28Speaker 4: went from being in total panic because their savior of
- 17:31Speaker 4: the franchise is out for the season to he's going
- 17:33Speaker 4: to be okay to he's an internet sensation because everyone's
- 17:36Speaker 4: goofing on him because he maybe reacted like he was
- 17:40Speaker 4: out for the season when he was out for two weeks.
- 17:42Speaker 4: The Chicago media is playing more defense than the Bears
- 17:45Speaker 4: are playing these days. They are very, hey, we can
- 17:48Speaker 4: make fun of our guy, but you can't make fun
- 17:50Speaker 4: of our guy.
- 17:50Speaker 5: I would say relax. Caleb is a big boy. He's
- 17:53Speaker 5: going to be fine.
- 17:54Speaker 4: You don't have to call out everybody in the media
- 17:56Speaker 4: or everyone on social media who's kind of poking your
- 17:59Speaker 4: quarterback for his reaction after being hurt. I will say
- 18:01Speaker 4: I have seen some people on both sides of the aisle.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I've seen some people say, sports media people, actual paid
- 18:06Speaker 4: sports media members say, Caleb Williams was acting there. He
- 18:10Speaker 4: was making himself into more than it was. I don't
- 18:13Speaker 4: think you act like you're hurt more than you are. Now,
- 18:15Speaker 4: people have different tolerance pain or how they show it.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And I've seen other people in sports media take up
- 18:21Speaker 4: for Caleb Williams as if they work for the Bears
- 18:23Speaker 4: and they're protecting him.
- 18:24Speaker 5: You don't have to do either. You could just talk
- 18:26Speaker 5: about this guy.
- 18:27Speaker 4: The issue is Caleb Williams gets clicks, and the Bears
- 18:30Speaker 4: get clicks, but it's Caleb Williams. And so people like
- 18:32Speaker 4: to pick a side with him and say, he's soft,
- 18:35Speaker 4: he's acting, he's a diva, he paints his fingernails. The
- 18:38Speaker 4: other side says, stay away from our quarterback. You don't
- 18:41Speaker 4: work for the Bears. It's their quarterback. So have a
- 18:44Speaker 4: little objectivity, cover the story, and don't defend Caleb Williams.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He'll defend himself when he gets on the field and
- 18:49Speaker 4: he gets in front of the mic again.
- 18:51Speaker 3: It's very logical. Well said. But come on, dude. It's
- 18:55Speaker 3: Caleb Williams. What's the deal with this guy?
- 18:57Speaker 5: See, I think you could have a little fun with it.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I saw the different memes where Caleb Williams is holding
- 19:01Speaker 4: the towel and doing the fist up and says, when
- 19:03Speaker 4: you successfully get your takeout order with no mistakes.
- 19:06Speaker 5: That's funny. And it's not a global desecration of our quarterback.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Laugh a little bit.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Realize that his reaction was a little over the top
- 19:16Speaker 4: for the injury it turned out to be.
- 19:18Speaker 5: But you don't have to go to bat for him.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I'm very curious in three years where we stand on
- 19:22Speaker 3: Caleb Williams. Is he going to... I guess, mature in
- 19:25Speaker 3: some people's mind? Are we going to look at him
- 19:27Speaker 3: as the ultimate professional or just sort of an oddball
- 19:29Speaker 3: who's incredibly talented and a good quarterback?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Well, I think the oddball days may go back to college,
- 19:34Speaker 4: his first year in the league. He seems to be
- 19:36Speaker 4: not doing anything odd these days, but people want to
- 19:39Speaker 4: force that issue.
- 19:40Speaker 3: That was odd.
- 19:41Speaker 5: It was odd.
- 19:42Speaker 3: You're being like the Chicago media. You don't see that
- 19:44Speaker 3: as odd?
- 19:45Speaker 5: You're screaming? Yeah, a little bit. I saw J.J.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Watt on a show the other day, and Watt was
- 19:50Speaker 4: asked about it. He goes, I pulled my hamstring. It
- 19:52Speaker 4: hurts more than you know. I trust J.J. Watt that
- 19:54Speaker 4: he knows about hamstrings more than we do, but he
- 19:57Speaker 4: also said that when I saw.
- 19:58Speaker 5: The reaction, I thought it was way, way worse.
- 20:01Speaker 2: We all did.
- 20:01Speaker 5: So you could think both.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess it feels like you're trying to toe
- 20:05Speaker 3: the line, and I think you're secretly defending Caleb Williams.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Secretly, not Putting my Caleb Williams shirt out there.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Okay. I have a much harder job right now, Paul.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I'm going to defend Aaron Rodgers.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Oh, good luck.
- 20:17Speaker 3: It's been a tough week in the media for Aaron Rodgers.
- 20:20Speaker 3: No surprise. He had a terrible game last weekend against
- 20:23Speaker 3: New England. And now he plays Cincinnati. Now, traditionally, you
- 20:26Speaker 3: know how the AFC North works. When the Steelers look
- 20:28Speaker 3: like they're struggling and the other team looks good, that's
- 20:31Speaker 3: a guaranteed Mike Tomlin victory. Guaranteed. They might as well
- 20:34Speaker 3: not even suit up. It's usually 19-13. Now, it's a
- 20:37Speaker 3: new coach in Pittsburgh. But I think Pittsburgh is underrated
- 20:40Speaker 3: coming into this game. And I think Cincinnati is overrated
- 20:43Speaker 3: coming into this game. Now, I'm not guaranteeing a win.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But Pittsburgh's defense looks awesome. Cincinnati's defense looks good, too.
- 20:49Speaker 3: But guess who Cincinnati's played? The Bucs, who are an
- 20:52Speaker 3: absolute mess. And then they played a Houston Texans team
- 20:55Speaker 3: without their best receiver. Listen to these Texans wide receivers
- 20:58Speaker 3: that they have. Xavier Hutchison, some guy named Jack Wayne. Oh, sorry.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Jared Wayne and Keishon Butte. Is that going to hurt anybody?
- 21:08Speaker 3: So Cincinnati's defense is getting all these headlines, Paul. They
- 21:10Speaker 3: play two bad offenses. Now they play another bad offense
- 21:14Speaker 3: this week. But Aaron Rodgers was so much better than
- 21:16Speaker 3: everyone's portraying last week. Key drop by DK Metcalf changed
- 21:19Speaker 3: the game. A fumble in the red zone. Aaron Rodgers
- 21:22Speaker 3: is the same quarterback as last year. And last year
- 21:24Speaker 3: in two games against Cincinnati, he averaged over 30 points.
- 21:27Speaker 3: He can still make that kind of throw that we're
- 21:29Speaker 3: seeing on camera right now.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I will give you credit for the warmth of this take,
- 21:33Speaker 4: but I cannot co-sign this take. I just watched the
- 21:36Speaker 4: Steelers and Aaron Rodgers. He stands motionless in the pocket,
- 21:39Speaker 4: and they don't realize that they have to block for him.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I think the Bengals are empowered the past couple weeks.
- 21:44Speaker 4: I think that the players on the Bengals, when was
- 21:47Speaker 4: the last time the Bengals got any run nationally about
- 21:49Speaker 4: their defense and not about Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase?
- 21:52Speaker 4: I think they're going to be licking their chops to
- 21:53Speaker 4: get this guy. I do think the Steelers will right
- 21:56Speaker 4: the ship-ish, but this could be a really awful year
- 21:59Speaker 4: for them and maybe put them in a quarterback draft position.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I know we're not there yet, but I think the
- 22:03Speaker 4: Bengals are going to eat this guy alive.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Ooh, we'll see. I mean, I think the Steelers are
- 22:06Speaker 3: going to be 9-8.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Are we keeping it friendly on this one?
- 22:08Speaker 3: Well, what's the spread? I'll take the Steelers to cover.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Okay, I'll take the Bengals.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I just think, and also this Bengals defensive storyline.
- 22:15Speaker 3: It's two games, and everyone's making it sound like they're
- 22:17Speaker 3: the purple people eaters or whatever. There's no great Cincinnati
- 22:20Speaker 3: defense nickname.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Bengals are giving 3.5. Still want it? Yeah. There you go.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I think this game is going to be really tight.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I think Aaron Rodgers, the panic is overstated. He wasn't
- 22:28Speaker 3: good last year, and they still got to the playoffs.
- 22:30Speaker 5: All right, Pearl, that's a bet. There's a bet. Put
- 22:32Speaker 5: it in the book, Scotty. Here we go.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Let's play another game, you and I. No money on
- 22:35Speaker 4: this one. We're just going to play a little Who
- 22:37Speaker 4: Said It. You got some points yesterday. I am a
- 22:40Speaker 4: donut on this.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Who said it? Football related. Here's the quote. Let's go.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Well, he can throw it. I mean, he's big, strong,
- 22:46Speaker 4: passing quarterback. He can throw the ball. Everybody that follows
- 22:49Speaker 4: football has certainly seen him play. His strengths are evident.
- 22:53Speaker 4: That's got to be John Harbaugh on Jameis Winston.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Oh, I'm co-signing. I want half a point.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Or should we go with a player from the team
- 23:02Speaker 5: on Jameis Winston?
- 23:02Speaker 3: Oh, okay. I'll take Malik Neighbors.
- 23:04Speaker 5: I'll take John Harbaugh of the Giants. Here we go. Well,
- 23:08Speaker 5: he can throw it.
- 23:09Speaker 7: He's a big, strong, passing quarterback. He can throw the ball.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Everybody that follows football has certainly seen Jameis play, and
- 23:19Speaker 7: his strengths are evident.
- 23:22Speaker 5: That is Mr.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Pot of John Harbaugh of the Giants talking about Jameis Winston. Now,
- 23:25Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure he watched the Rams game because he
- 23:27Speaker 4: was on the sidelines. He kind of maybe erased it
- 23:29Speaker 4: from his memory.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Yeah, actually, I don't think he bought into what he
- 23:32Speaker 3: was saying. I think he was being a little defensive there.
- 23:35Speaker 5: That's a must-compliment situation if you're a coach.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I mean, he's a quarterback. I hope he can throw
- 23:38Speaker 3: the football.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and being big is not really an accomplishment because,
- 23:42Speaker 4: you know, if you put on weight, all of us
- 23:43Speaker 4: can be big.
- 23:44Speaker 3: It was a little weird how bad Jameis was because
- 23:46Speaker 3: we've seen a lot of Jameis Winston. I don't know
- 23:48Speaker 3: who that quarterback was on Sunday.
- 23:50Speaker 4: He also called him a passing quarterback. I mean, that
- 23:52Speaker 4: seems inherently part of the job. Like, you just have
- 23:55Speaker 4: to pass the ball.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Unless you're Tim Tebow.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Fair point, fair point. All right, that's it for us.
- 23:59Speaker 5: We got a point. I'm giving myself a point on that.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Yeah, good job.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Coming up next, we're going to check in on those
- 24:03Speaker 4: New York Giants. What are they doing at the quarterback position?
- 24:06Speaker 4: Are they thinking long-term, short-term, or not thinking at all?
- 24:09Speaker 5: Stick around. It's not so fast.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast. Perloff and Paps. A lot
- 24:16Speaker 3: of news this week out of New York Giants land.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Jackson Dart looks like he's out for most of the season,
- 24:20Speaker 3: but there's some confusion, Paul.
- 24:22Speaker 4: It's a little confusing. Whole season, regular season, postseason. When
- 24:26Speaker 4: is the surgery? What's the backup situation? There's a lot unanswered.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so to get those answers, we're going to go
- 24:31Speaker 3: to one of the best in the biz, Pat Leonard,
- 24:33Speaker 3: New York Daily News, Giants beat reporter. Pat, take us
- 24:36Speaker 3: through the TikTok of finding out that Jackson Dart wasn't
- 24:39Speaker 3: out four to six weeks, as many of us expected,
- 24:42Speaker 3: but out for the season.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Great to be with you guys. The Giants are down.
- 24:48Speaker 6: They're shell-shocked right now because of exactly what you just said.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I was talking to John Runyon, their starting left guard,
- 24:55Speaker 6: after he had heard the news that Dart was out
- 24:57Speaker 6: for the season. And he said it was devastating, not
- 24:59Speaker 6: just because they lost their franchise quarterback, but because he
- 25:03Speaker 6: saw Dart standing on the sidelines after the injury on
- 25:05Speaker 6: Monday Night Football. And what Dart was telling him was
- 25:08Speaker 6: he was in a little bit of pain and discomfort,
- 25:10Speaker 6: didn't think it was too serious. They thought four to
- 25:13Speaker 6: six weeks tops. But what happened was they got an
- 25:16Speaker 6: MRI the next day. The results showed tears in the
- 25:19Speaker 6: MCL and then the meniscus, which is the key one,
- 25:21Speaker 6: as well as damage to the PCL. Dart, of course,
- 25:24Speaker 6: trying to play through, seeking second opinions on whether actually
- 25:27Speaker 6: he does need the season ending surgery. But the best
- 25:30Speaker 6: thing for him as an athlete long term is to
- 25:32Speaker 6: get that done. And so the Giants went from a
- 25:35Speaker 6: punch in the gut to kind of an uppercut to
- 25:37Speaker 6: the chin.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Yeah, when I was watching that game, it looked like
- 25:40Speaker 4: a hard hit. But when you see him come back
- 25:42Speaker 4: out there, I think, oh, he's going to be okay.
- 25:44Speaker 4: And the irony is, we've talked about this on this
- 25:46Speaker 4: show and other shows, is that last year he was
- 25:48Speaker 4: quite reckless. And he started sliding a little bit. In
- 25:51Speaker 4: week one, I saw him slide a couple times. It
- 25:52Speaker 4: felt like he was learning his lesson. So the irony
- 25:55Speaker 4: gets hit in the pocket.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Yeah, no, definitely.
- 25:58Speaker 6: The thing about Jackson that coming into year two, The
- 26:02Speaker 6: key was learn how to play more as a pocket
- 26:05Speaker 6: passer who runs rather than as a running back or
- 26:07Speaker 6: as a running quarterback who throws.
- 26:09Speaker 2: And you're right.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Through two games, you were seeing more of that. And
- 26:13Speaker 6: it is ironic that he gets hurt, quote unquote, in
- 26:16Speaker 6: the pocket.
- 26:16Speaker 3: But.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Here was another key evaluation point of Jackson. He's still
- 26:20Speaker 6: an undersized quarterback who through two seasons or a season
- 26:25Speaker 6: and a couple of weeks was still learning how to
- 26:27Speaker 6: see the field, see downfield and make those decisions in
- 26:31Speaker 6: those split seconds decisions that are the difference really between taking.
- 26:35Speaker 2: The massive hits and not.
- 26:36Speaker 6: And frankly, even though the, the win over the Dallas
- 26:40Speaker 6: Cowboys was so promising guys in the preseason, he took
- 26:43Speaker 6: a massive blindside hit on a, on a simulated pressure
- 26:46Speaker 6: in week one against Dallas, Caleb downs, rocked him and
- 26:50Speaker 6: forced to fumble on a blitz from the outside. And
- 26:53Speaker 6: now here, yes, your tackles are just getting clean beat,
- 26:56Speaker 6: which is an even more concerning thing going on now
- 26:59Speaker 6: with James Winston under center, frankly, but yeah, Dart still
- 27:02Speaker 6: really hasn't been able to show that he can avoid
- 27:04Speaker 6: taking the hits that so far he hasn't been able
- 27:07Speaker 6: to survive.
- 27:08Speaker 3: All right, Pat, play out this scenario. The Giants season
- 27:11Speaker 3: goes off the rails as very easily could happen. What
- 27:14Speaker 3: if they're in the top five or top ten and
- 27:17Speaker 3: a quarterback is available? How about one with the last
- 27:19Speaker 3: name Manning? Do you think they're sold on Jackson Dart
- 27:22Speaker 3: no matter what happens come draft time next year?
- 27:25Speaker 2: No, Andrew, I think that's an excellent question.
- 27:28Speaker 6: And I was talking about this the other day on
- 27:30Speaker 6: my Talking Ball with Pat Leonard podcast over on YouTube
- 27:33Speaker 6: after the game in L.A. It's that there are plenty
- 27:36Speaker 6: of people, Giants fans and people in the Giants building
- 27:39Speaker 6: who wouldn't want to hear this question or have this conversation.
- 27:42Speaker 6: but it is a very real conversation now about where
- 27:45Speaker 6: this goes. This is not John Harbaugh's quarterback. It was
- 27:48Speaker 6: his quarterback to start this season. He did not draft
- 27:51Speaker 6: Jackson dart and he was trying to make it work
- 27:54Speaker 6: and they were determined to make it work. And they
- 27:56Speaker 6: still have a high opinion of Jackson, but if they
- 27:58Speaker 6: have a top five pick and arch Manning is there,
- 28:01Speaker 6: Who is going to look me in the eye or
- 28:03Speaker 6: you in the eye and tell us that the New
- 28:05Speaker 6: York Giants aren't going to try to make that happen, right,
- 28:09Speaker 6: with the history of Eli Manning? And also, frankly, Dart,
- 28:14Speaker 6: as promising and talented as he is, doesn't have enough
- 28:18Speaker 6: of a resume to say, well, Jackson will just get
- 28:21Speaker 6: healthy and we'll draft a Jeremiah Smith or a receiver
- 28:24Speaker 6: and we'll be off and running next year and everything
- 28:26Speaker 6: will be fine. You're still unanswered on the question of
- 28:30Speaker 6: can Jackson can sustain it. So there would be the
- 28:33Speaker 6: element of being in position to make that pick. And
- 28:36Speaker 6: then also the lingering questions about is Jackson the guy
- 28:39Speaker 6: and does John Harbaugh have an idea of a different
- 28:41Speaker 6: kind of QB he wants here?
- 28:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that could be like a situation we were talking
- 28:44Speaker 4: about it yesterday and not so fast when Peyton Manning
- 28:46Speaker 4: has a neck injury and Peyton Manning is bigger than
- 28:49Speaker 4: Jackson Dart, they stumbled into Andrew Luck. I want to
- 28:51Speaker 4: back up a little bit. Right now with the Giants today,
- 28:54Speaker 4: how do you think they address the quarterback position for
- 28:56Speaker 4: the rest of the year? Do they stay with Winston
- 28:59Speaker 4: and just get a serviceable backup? Or do they maybe
- 29:02Speaker 4: make a play for a quarterback and see if they
- 29:04Speaker 4: can make a season out of this?
- 29:06Speaker 6: Well, Harbaugh said flat out they're going to get another
- 29:08Speaker 6: quarterback in here. He said he would prefer a veteran,
- 29:11Speaker 6: but it doesn't have to be one. He also said
- 29:13Speaker 6: anything's on the table. So it could be a signing
- 29:16Speaker 6: of a free agent. or it could be a trade
- 29:18Speaker 6: of somebody on another team. Now, the big question to me, we'll,
- 29:22Speaker 6: we'll name some names in a second, but the big
- 29:24Speaker 6: question to me is this, are you acquiring a quarterback
- 29:28Speaker 6: to be a serviceable backup to Jamis Winston? If you
- 29:31Speaker 6: go get one, or are you already doubting Jamis and
- 29:36Speaker 6: acquiring this new QB to learn the offense and replace him?
- 29:39Speaker 6: Because I think as far as the functioning of your
- 29:42Speaker 6: locker room where Jameis is popular and the chemistry of
- 29:45Speaker 6: your team, there's a lot of things you have to
- 29:46Speaker 6: think about with the balance of this. Not to mention
- 29:49Speaker 6: that they already gave Jameis a contract extension less than
- 29:52Speaker 6: a month ago because they thought he was so good
- 29:55Speaker 6: as a backup and that he could play. So they
- 29:58Speaker 6: wouldn't look very good if they did that either.
- 30:00Speaker 2: But.
- 30:01Speaker 6: I would say Jimmy Garoppolo is the name that has
- 30:03Speaker 6: come up. Gardner Minshew I've heard floated around as a
- 30:07Speaker 6: guy who has a history with Matt Nagy. Frankly, this weekend,
- 30:10Speaker 6: I saw Mitch Trubisky as the backup in Tennessee. Nagy
- 30:13Speaker 6: calling plays, had some of his best years with him
- 30:15Speaker 6: in Chicago going back.
- 30:17Speaker 2: But are these teams going to.
- 30:19Speaker 6: Are these teams, you know, bending over, you know, eager
- 30:23Speaker 6: to jump up and help the Giants solve their quarterback problem? No,
- 30:28Speaker 6: like a Mac Jones in San Francisco, it's easy to
- 30:31Speaker 6: look at what he did last year when Purdy was
- 30:32Speaker 6: out and say, well, yeah, go get him. But the
- 30:35Speaker 6: Niners would be asking for the moon, you would think,
- 30:38Speaker 6: if you were going to get a Mac Jones. And
- 30:40Speaker 6: it's not like Kyle Shanahan cares about John Harbaugh and
- 30:42Speaker 6: the Giants.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Problem, so.
- 30:44Speaker 6: I think there's not exactly an embarrassment of riches when
- 30:47Speaker 6: it comes to who you're going to go get to
- 30:49Speaker 6: turn your season around. And then Harbaugh does need to
- 30:51Speaker 6: be cautious about who he's bringing in and why he's
- 30:54Speaker 6: bringing them in. JJ McCarthy is a name I've heard,
- 30:58Speaker 6: but I don't know. I mean, it seemed like they
- 31:01Speaker 6: pulled him from their preseason game against the Giants because
- 31:03Speaker 6: he was playing so poorly when the Vikings were here.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I don't think that's the answer, guys.
- 31:07Speaker 1: No.
- 31:08Speaker 3: All right, Pat, I see you are in the Meadowlands
- 31:10Speaker 3: parking lot, a parking lot I know all too well.
- 31:12Speaker 3: So I'll let you get to work in the Giants facility.
- 31:15Speaker 3: It's going to be an interesting week, buddy. Thanks for
- 31:17Speaker 3: the time.
- 31:18Speaker 2: You got it. Talking Ball with Pat Leonard on YouTube.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Love it. We will check it out. Oh, man.
- 31:23Speaker 4: I've been in that parking lot a lot. I usually
- 31:25Speaker 4: have a red solo cup in my hand. I'm not
- 31:27Speaker 4: usually covering any sports.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Well, I know when it's empty after the game, after
- 31:30Speaker 3: you spend two hours in the press box, you go
- 31:33Speaker 3: down and there's about a million and a half seagulls.
- 31:35Speaker 3: By the way, Pat had an interesting answer about Arch Manning.
- 31:38Speaker 3: This is a real issue because we loved Jackson Dart
- 31:40Speaker 3: about three weeks ago. Now we're talking about drafting a quarterback.
- 31:43Speaker 4: It could be something you stumble into you didn't intend
- 31:45Speaker 4: to stumble into, and it's not on the radar. Now,
- 31:47Speaker 4: they can't address it. No one, the GM, the coach,
- 31:49Speaker 4: they can never even entertain this when it's asked of them.
- 31:52Speaker 4: But they're in a real weird position because I don't
- 31:54Speaker 4: think the Giants are competing for anything real this year.
- 31:57Speaker 5: Not a contender.
- 31:58Speaker 1: No.
- 31:58Speaker 4: So do you trade a draft pick, even a fifth
- 32:00Speaker 4: or sixth round draft pick for a player to get
- 32:02Speaker 4: you to six wins?
- 32:04Speaker 3: Well, I mean, think about the ownership and the team.
- 32:07Speaker 3: It's been a long time for the Giants. I don't
- 32:08Speaker 3: know if they still want to rebuild and rebuild and rebuild.
- 32:10Speaker 3: So there will be people in the building who say,
- 32:12Speaker 3: get me a veteran in here right now.
- 32:14Speaker 5: But to do what? To get to seven wins and
- 32:15Speaker 5: not make the playoffs and lose a sixth round draft pick?
- 32:18Speaker 5: I don't see it.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Jameis played awful. If he played serviceable, we probably wouldn't
- 32:21Speaker 4: have this conversation. And you'd bring in Brandon Allen or
- 32:24Speaker 4: Jake Allen or Doug Allen or some Allen that played
- 32:26Speaker 4: pro football.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Not only that, too. They had injuries at left tackle.
- 32:29Speaker 3: They had Brian Burns got hurt. It feels like injuries
- 32:32Speaker 3: are going to be one of the storylines.
- 32:33Speaker 4: The GM will never admit this, but this could be
- 32:35Speaker 4: looked at as like a gap year where you say, hey,
- 32:38Speaker 4: this is unintentional. It didn't mean for it to happen,
- 32:40Speaker 4: but we'll let it play out. We've got some good players.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Keep Malik Nabors healthy. Get some other players. But if
- 32:46Speaker 4: you get a top five draft pick, You're not committed
- 32:48Speaker 4: to Jackson Dart financially. He got all his money up front.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Yeah, a gap year, but it's been a gap decade.
- 32:52Speaker 3: I think people are tired of the gap in New York.
- 32:54Speaker 4: But with Harbaugh, it's his first year. No one's going
- 32:57Speaker 4: to be putting a coach on a hot seat, especially
- 32:58Speaker 4: not a Harbaugh. So it's one of those unintentional things.
- 33:01Speaker 4: I go back to Manning with the Colts. He has
- 33:03Speaker 4: that neck injury. And if he didn't, and he just
- 33:06Speaker 4: played good football. they would have never taken Andrew Luck.
- 33:08Speaker 4: They would have never been in a position to take
- 33:10Speaker 4: Andrew Luck. And Andrew Luck, even though it didn't work
- 33:12Speaker 4: out 15 years, it did for seven years.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that wasn't bad. I mean, listen, the Giants
- 33:16Speaker 3: haven't had much luck at all, and they definitely have
- 33:18Speaker 3: not had it this year. All right, coming up next,
- 33:20Speaker 3: Dan Patrick weighs in on the Graham-Benziger-Mike McDonald-Sean Payton triumvirate.
- 33:25Speaker 3: We'll dive into it as well. Not so fast.
- 33:28Speaker 8: Yeah, well, you know, he was older, and he was
- 33:31Speaker 8: coming off of two years or a year and a
- 33:32Speaker 8: half in prison, so... But, I mean, honestly, in our prime,
- 33:36Speaker 8: I mean, you can ask Vic. I think I still
- 33:38Speaker 8: got him in my prime, too. But, yeah, I was
- 33:40Speaker 8: faster when he came along and played with us.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff here, NBC
- 33:45Speaker 4: Sports Now and Peacock. That was DeSean Jackson, the great
- 33:48Speaker 4: wide receiver for your Eagles. Also, he's the head coach
- 33:51Speaker 4: of Delaware State Football, which.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Are having a nice season.
- 33:54Speaker 3: You know, he's one of the few NFL players who's
- 33:56Speaker 3: ever yelled at me, and you'll never guess why. Really? Yes,
- 33:59Speaker 3: I was doing an Eagles preview for Sports Illustrated, and
- 34:01Speaker 3: I went to camp and asked him about when he
- 34:03Speaker 3: fumbled at the one-yard line. I said, what did you
- 34:06Speaker 3: learn from that? He goes, what did I learn from that?
- 34:07Speaker 3: I fumbled at the one-yard line. What do you think
- 34:09Speaker 3: I learned from that? And he did not like it.
- 34:11Speaker 5: That is a gutsy question for him.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I almost want to talk to him. Maybe go
- 34:15Speaker 3: down to Delaware State on a fall afternoon. It's lovely
- 34:17Speaker 3: down there. And say, hey, 20 years later, did you
- 34:21Speaker 3: learn anything? But he was great on the show. I
- 34:24Speaker 3: got to tell you, he's one of the fastest NFL
- 34:25Speaker 3: players I've ever seen.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I think if you said fastest ever, Tyreek Hill's
- 34:29Speaker 4: in the mix, Mike Vick's in the mix.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Xavier Worthy now with the Chiefs.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Willie Galt, if you go back a generation, I had
- 34:35Speaker 4: to work that in.
- 34:37Speaker 3: 85 Bears, Willie Galt?
- 34:38Speaker 5: Shocking.
- 34:39Speaker 4: The other thing he talked about that he could have
- 34:41Speaker 4: played both college and pro baseball.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Who is the other guy? We obviously know Bo Jackson.
- 34:46Speaker 5: We know Deion Sanders.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Who's the guy who played one sport you wish you
- 34:49Speaker 4: could have saw play more of another sport?
- 34:51Speaker 5: You go first.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I'm going to do a little bit of fantasy. What
- 34:54Speaker 3: if LeBron James could have played football? He talks about
- 34:57Speaker 3: it enough. He was at the Rams game the other night.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Let's get LeBron on the football field.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I got to tell you, YouTube does not have a
- 35:02Speaker 4: lot of LeBron wide receiver clips from when he was
- 35:04Speaker 4: a sophomore or junior because I think he gave it
- 35:06Speaker 4: up too fast.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, at 6'9, you're a pretty big target
- 35:10Speaker 3: out there. There are not a lot of 6'9 tight ends.
- 35:12Speaker 5: I would have liked to have seen more Allen Iverson
- 35:14Speaker 5: as a football player.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Yeah, he went to Georgetown.
- 35:16Speaker 4: If somehow Georgetown started their football team, imagine D3 football
- 35:19Speaker 4: with Allen Iverson at Georgetown.
- 35:21Speaker 5: I would have watched some Allen Iverson.
- 35:22Speaker 3: You know, former NFL head coach Jim Schwartz played football
- 35:25Speaker 3: at Georgetown. I think Allen Iverson could have played at UVA.
- 35:28Speaker 3: He was a superstar in football. Even Vic and those
- 35:31Speaker 3: guys talk about him like he was as good as
- 35:33Speaker 3: they were.
- 35:34Speaker 4: You know, he was on the Dan Patrick show, Allen Iverson,
- 35:35Speaker 4: years ago. And Dan asked him how close he was
- 35:37Speaker 4: to playing two sports. He said before the incident happened
- 35:40Speaker 4: at the bowling alley, he was in discussions with a
- 35:43Speaker 4: couple different colleges about playing both. And because they wanted
- 35:45Speaker 4: him so bad as a basketball player, they were going
- 35:47Speaker 4: to wink at the football career.
- 35:49Speaker 3: I mean, he is such an awesome athlete. He's skinny, though,
- 35:51Speaker 3: so he would have to put on a few pounds. Yes.
- 35:54Speaker 3: All right. What else we got from the show today?
- 35:56Speaker 3: DP talked about the Graham Benziger situation. If you haven't
- 35:59Speaker 3: heard about this, it's kind of a wild situation. Seahawks
- 36:02Speaker 3: coach Mike McDonald was on his show and said way
- 36:05Speaker 3: too much. He did not apparently know that this was
- 36:08Speaker 3: going to air. Earlier today, Dan gave his thoughts on
- 36:11Speaker 3: what happened.
- 36:13Speaker 1: If this is the way Graham Benzinger does his interviews
- 36:18Speaker 1: and he lets the subject know, then this is on
- 36:21Speaker 1: Mike McDonald. And if that's the case, you don't have
- 36:25Speaker 1: to apologize. You can say, look, I'm sorry you didn't
- 36:28Speaker 1: remember what we told you. But I don't think that
- 36:32Speaker 1: clip should have aired because he clearly was just talking
- 36:36Speaker 1: to you.
- 36:37Speaker 5: And I don't know.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I didn't see the rest of the interview. I only
- 36:40Speaker 1: saw that clip. And I would have a problem with that.
- 36:44Speaker 1: If we aired that, I would have had a problem
- 36:46Speaker 1: with our folks here.
- 36:48Speaker 5: So there's a lot of elements of this story. It's
- 36:51Speaker 5: day two of this story.
- 36:52Speaker 4: So Mike McDonald, who was on with Graham Bensinger, he
- 36:55Speaker 4: talks about, and it felt like it was before the interview.
- 36:57Speaker 4: They admitted the part was before the interview. And they
- 37:00Speaker 4: start chopping it up. But there's guys moving lights around.
- 37:03Speaker 4: It's not clear. My only thing I want to know is,
- 37:06Speaker 4: was Mike McDonald told, before he walked out to the studio,
- 37:09Speaker 4: Everything's in play, coach. Anything we talk about here could
- 37:11Speaker 4: be used on the show. If he was, then it's
- 37:13Speaker 4: on Coach McDonald for not being ready or prepared. If
- 37:16Speaker 4: he wasn't, which I would like to know, then it's
- 37:19Speaker 4: on the producers of the show.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Now, you've been in this situation many times with Dan
- 37:23Speaker 3: Patrick's show. Big-time guests coming out. What do you tell
- 37:26Speaker 3: them before the interview starts?
- 37:27Speaker 4: We always tell them, when you walk in the studio,
- 37:29Speaker 4: expect your mic to be hot and expect the camera
- 37:31Speaker 4: to be on. We give them specific instructions if they
- 37:34Speaker 4: come out and there's a live look-in. If you watch
- 37:36Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick show, they do commercial look-ins. We say, hey,
- 37:39Speaker 4: We're coming back in about 10 seconds, just so you know.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Have your mic on, and you're on air. And we
- 37:44Speaker 4: give them explicit notes or heads up before.
- 37:47Speaker 5: During, and after.
- 37:48Speaker 3: So Graham Benzinger gets a lot of big-time interviews. A-list guys.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Do you think anyone's going to be nervous about going
- 37:53Speaker 3: on a show after he's sort of put this out there? Now,
- 37:55Speaker 3: he said he didn't really mean to put it out there,
- 37:58Speaker 3: and he regretted the decision. But I wonder if there's
- 38:00Speaker 3: some damage here.
- 38:01Speaker 4: I do wonder that, and I also wonder if it
- 38:03Speaker 4: wasn't such a good, saucy story, would they have put
- 38:05Speaker 4: it out there? If they were just chit-chatting about, hey,
- 38:08Speaker 4: where's your kid going, private school, public school, I don't
- 38:11Speaker 4: know if they'd post that clip. They posted the clip
- 38:13Speaker 4: of him talking about Sean Payton going after them for cheating.
- 38:16Speaker 3: The funny thing, too, is what a stupid scandal. This
- 38:19Speaker 3: was the opposite of Spygate because one team looked at
- 38:22Speaker 3: Twitter for the plays. I think that's why everybody was like,
- 38:25Speaker 3: who cares? I don't know why Sean Payton was so mad.
- 38:27Speaker 5: But you know how it is with NFL. It would
- 38:29Speaker 5: happen on a Wednesday. It's in between games.
- 38:31Speaker 4: It didn't happen on a Monday. It didn't happen on
- 38:33Speaker 4: a Friday. It was a perfect Wednesday pro football story.
- 38:36Speaker 3: Well, and I guess Sean Payton, this is a sensitive
- 38:38Speaker 3: topic for him. I think he was embarrassed by the
- 38:40Speaker 3: whole thing. You know what, Mike McDonald, he's still our guy.
- 38:44Speaker 3: I love that guy.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Oh, you win the Super Bowl, you could do no wrong.
- 38:46Speaker 5: This is a blip. This is not a big deal.
- 38:48Speaker 4: All right, the other clip we want to play, this
- 38:49Speaker 4: is our buddy Mike Florio. On his show yesterday on
- 38:52Speaker 4: Not So Fast, comes up before this, Mike Florio's show
- 38:54Speaker 4: with Chris Sims. He talked about the game this weekend,
- 38:57Speaker 4: and you guys know this game. It's Cowboys-Ravens down in Brazil.
- 39:01Speaker 4: And there's been issues with the field. The NFL is
- 39:03Speaker 4: downplaying it. Florida doesn't see it that way.
- 39:07Speaker 9: Nothing is getting in the way with the obsession to
- 39:10Speaker 9: globalize the sport. And bad field, if we have to
- 39:14Speaker 9: deal with a bad field for three hours, that's fine.
- 39:17Speaker 5: Players are going to get injured.
- 39:18Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 39:18Speaker 9: They're going to get injured anywhere. They're going to get,
- 39:20Speaker 9: they always say they'll play anywhere. Well, all right, here
- 39:23Speaker 9: we go.
- 39:24Speaker 5: Play on this.
- 39:25Speaker 9: I feel like at this stage of the NFL's international experiment,
- 39:29Speaker 9: they're not letting, anything get in the way and they're
- 39:32Speaker 9: not going to pull the plug no matter how bad
- 39:35Speaker 9: that field may be. They are going to make chicken
- 39:37Speaker 9: salad out of that field and they're going to get
- 39:39Speaker 9: it ready for Sunday.
- 39:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Florio nailed this one. I don't think
- 39:43Speaker 4: the NFL really cares. Clearly, they're going to try to
- 39:45Speaker 4: get the field as ready as they can. But they're
- 39:47Speaker 4: not canceling the game. They're not bringing everybody back home.
- 39:49Speaker 4: This is a national event in that country that's been
- 39:52Speaker 4: building for months and actually years they've known about this.
- 39:55Speaker 4: I look at the NFL, you know, if there's a lawsuit,
- 39:58Speaker 4: there's a concussion lawsuit. There's not a bad field lawsuit.
- 40:00Speaker 4: They're all going to make the fields the best they can,
- 40:02Speaker 4: but they're not going to overspend on it.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Well, they could go grass- The same stadiums played the
- 40:07Speaker 3: World Cup on grass, and the NFL, these are the
- 40:09Speaker 3: multi-use they want. They're like, well, we're not going to
- 40:11Speaker 3: pay for that for the NFL season. So there's obviously
- 40:14Speaker 3: a lot of room for improvement here. Also, the Brazil game,
- 40:17Speaker 3: the Eagles went to Brazil a couple years ago and
- 40:19Speaker 3: won the Super Bowl. So you can't say it's a
- 40:21Speaker 3: total competitive disadvantage.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Oh, so you're saying it's correlation.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Look at the field there. There's some soccer clips. There's
- 40:27Speaker 4: stuff all over the place. It's all chopped up. It's
- 40:30Speaker 4: going to be interesting to see when the game is
- 40:31Speaker 4: on TV, the people who don't know about this field issue,
- 40:34Speaker 4: Their reaction on social media in real time, because if
- 40:37Speaker 4: it's a complete quagmire.
- 40:38Speaker 5: Good word, by the way, the reaction is going to
- 40:40Speaker 5: be out of hand.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Wouldn't it be better if I told you it was
- 40:42Speaker 3: a good word instead of you saying your own word
- 40:43Speaker 3: was a good word?
- 40:44Speaker 5: I was surprised that I pulled it off.
- 40:45Speaker 4: All right, it's time for the rando here on Not
- 40:47Speaker 4: So Fast. Something we saw that surprised us, we didn't like,
- 40:50Speaker 4: we did like. This one is out of nowhere. College basketball, Pearl.
- 40:54Speaker 4: Your Mississippi Valley State Hoops team. I don't know where
- 40:58Speaker 4: we got this from. I thought it was AI. Your
- 41:00Speaker 4: Delta Devils, the 2026-27 schedule.
- 41:04Speaker 3: They're on the road early.
- 41:05Speaker 5: Oklahoma, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, Arkansas.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Now, what's your theory here for the SWAC Delta Devils?
- 41:12Speaker 3: I have no theory because I do see at Michigan
- 41:15Speaker 3: and at UConn, as I recall, those were the two
- 41:18Speaker 3: best teams in the tournament last year.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Well, they did mix in North Texas. That's their win
- 41:23Speaker 4: in that group, and I'm not making fun of North Texas.
- 41:25Speaker 4: But they're at UConn, the Mississippi State Valley basketball team.
- 41:28Speaker 3: I mean, this is like playing with, you know how
- 41:31Speaker 3: the batters have donuts on their bat before they get
- 41:33Speaker 3: it onto the plate? They are going to be so
- 41:35Speaker 3: battle-tested by the time they get Bethune-Cookman. They're going to
- 41:38Speaker 3: be really good at SWAC.
- 41:40Speaker 4: So you're saying Alabama A & M and Alabama State
- 41:42Speaker 4: should be nervous about what's coming.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. Now, is that the college that Jerry Rice
- 41:47Speaker 3: went to? I always get confused about his alma mater.
- 41:50Speaker 5: It sure does. It had been a Mississippi. Try that
- 41:52Speaker 5: one out for size. Now, here's the thing. Do they
- 41:54Speaker 5: get paid to do these games, like college football teams?
- 41:56Speaker 3: I'm assuming. I hope so.
- 41:58Speaker 5: I hope they're getting paid a lot.
- 41:59Speaker 3: They might have a lot of NIL money after this.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Well, keep an eye on this story. This is fantastic.
- 42:03Speaker 4: All right, coming up next. Oh, constructive criticism and the feel-good.
- 42:07Speaker 4: And superlatives.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Nailed that.
- 42:09Speaker 5: Superlatives are back. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 42:13Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 42:15Speaker 3: Paul Papps. If you watch the DP show today, there
- 42:18Speaker 3: was a wonderful surprise. Paul, it's your birthday, and I
- 42:21Speaker 3: got you a present as well. Wow.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Everyone's been so nice to me today around here.
- 42:24Speaker 3: This is Case Keenum playing for Moore. Your Chicago Bears
- 42:27Speaker 3: quarterback wrote a book co-written by Andrew Perloff. Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 5: You just went third person as you gave me a
- 42:32Speaker 5: book that you co-wrote.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Oh, bonus coverage. It's autographed by you. By you, not
- 42:39Speaker 4: Case Keenum.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Great.
- 42:41Speaker 3: I couldn't afford the one autograph.
- 42:43Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. Let's get to Superloftives week number two. All right. Superloftives,
- 42:50Speaker 3: the best and worst around the NFL. This week we're
- 42:54Speaker 3: going to do the backup quarterback Superloftives. Starting with the
- 42:58Speaker 3: best backup quarterback. Not only is this guy the best
- 43:00Speaker 3: backup quarterback so far this year, he might be the
- 43:03Speaker 3: best backup quarterback we've seen in years. Maybe since Case
- 43:06Speaker 3: Keenum in 2018 with Minnesota. And that, of course, is
- 43:09Speaker 3: Drew Locke. Guess who leads the NFL in passer rating, Paul?
- 43:12Speaker 5: Drew Locke?
- 43:13Speaker 3: Drew Locke. He's fourth in QBR as well. Four touchdowns,
- 43:17Speaker 3: no picks. Has been better than advertised. I think people
- 43:20Speaker 3: know he's played well. By the numbers, he's been one
- 43:22Speaker 3: of the top three or four quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 43:24Speaker 3: But he probably hits the bench this week. That's okay.
- 43:27Speaker 3: I think Seattle knows they have something. So Drew Locke
- 43:30Speaker 3: at least gets a superlative. Okay, if we're doing best,
- 43:33Speaker 3: we've got to do worse. The worst, there was more
- 43:36Speaker 3: competition than you might think. If Drew Locke had the
- 43:39Speaker 3: best passer rating, the worst passer rating was also a backup,
- 43:42Speaker 3: but it was Jack Strand in Atlanta. Oh, my God.
- 43:44Speaker 3: He did not get the award. That goes to Jameis Winston.
- 43:46Speaker 3: Jameis Winston gets his superloftive for worst backup quarterback performance
- 43:51Speaker 3: so far this season.
- 43:51Speaker 5: He looks confused.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Jameis should know better. The pick that he threw against
- 43:55Speaker 3: the Rams that really turned the tide and put the
- 43:58Speaker 3: Giants out of the game was so bad. Jameis, you
- 44:00Speaker 3: deserve this sticker because you are really, really bad. You're
- 44:03Speaker 3: better than that, Jameis. I hope you're better this week. Okay,
- 44:06Speaker 3: my most confusing backup quarterback, you know who I'm going
- 44:09Speaker 3: with here, Paul. Carson Wentz. Carson Wentz was both great, bad,
- 44:15Speaker 3: and in between for Minnesota. They are 2-0. Now, his
- 44:19Speaker 3: numbers were just about average. He is ranked 24th out
- 44:22Speaker 3: of 33 according to Pro Football Focus on his performance
- 44:25Speaker 3: through two weeks. One of them was in the rain.
- 44:27Speaker 3: So that was tougher. He has two big time throws
- 44:31Speaker 3: and two turnover worthy throws, but nobody caught those turnover
- 44:35Speaker 3: worthy throws. So his numbers are OK. I really don't
- 44:38Speaker 3: know what the Minnesota Vikings have in Carson Wentz or
- 44:41Speaker 3: Kyler Murray. So he gets my super lofted, most confusing quarterback.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to go back to Drew Locke.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I think Drew Locke's career is in this really interesting
- 44:48Speaker 4: slash weird position. After a couple good games, what if
- 44:51Speaker 4: he doesn't play again this year? Does he get high-end
- 44:54Speaker 4: backup money, or does he get a chance to run
- 44:56Speaker 4: his own squad?
- 44:57Speaker 3: He definitely gets a chance to start next year. I mean,
- 45:01Speaker 3: what's the model? Sam Darnold, right in front of him.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Maybe he goes one more stop with a McVay or
- 45:06Speaker 3: a Shanahan. Drew Locke is clearly amongst the top 32.
- 45:08Speaker 4: All right, let's get to Thursday Night Football. If the
- 45:11Speaker 4: Falcons win tonight, the reaction is what?
- 45:13Speaker 3: Wow, we were wrong the first two weeks. All they
- 45:15Speaker 3: needed was Michael Penix.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Okay, and the Packers would get lit up if they
- 45:18Speaker 4: lost tonight in any way for any reason.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Packers, they're hurt.
- 45:22Speaker 4: But I think the local reaction, maybe not the national reaction,
- 45:24Speaker 4: but the local reaction if they lose to the hapless
- 45:27Speaker 4: Falcons would be disaster time in Green Bay.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but Packers fans don't really get mad, so I
- 45:32Speaker 3: don't know what that means. I'll tell you what, if
- 45:34Speaker 3: they lose tonight, I'm going to go a little warm here.
- 45:37Speaker 3: They're 1-2. That is a team to watch out for
- 45:39Speaker 3: in the second half of the season.
- 45:40Speaker 5: Who did they hold?
- 45:41Speaker 3: No, Josh Jacobs is coming back. Linemen are coming back.
- 45:44Speaker 3: They are going to be a dangerous team in the
- 45:45Speaker 3: second half when they're healthy.
- 45:47Speaker 4: That is pretty warm. And I think with the Packers,
- 45:48Speaker 4: if they win, the reaction is going to be light.
- 45:50Speaker 4: That's what they should be doing. They're not going to
- 45:52Speaker 4: get a lot of pub for that. It's time for
- 45:53Speaker 4: constructive criticism here on the Not So Fast Show.
- 45:56Speaker 5: Here we go, Pearl. Here's what people had to say
- 45:58Speaker 5: to us. Maybe about your hair. Maybe about my birthday.
- 46:01Speaker 5: Who knows? Best road trip song.
- 46:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 46:05Speaker 5: Running down a dream.
- 46:06Speaker 4: Touch the sky. This must be the place. Talking heads.
- 46:09Speaker 4: And Eye of the Tiger, No Shocker from Fritzie. Where
- 46:11Speaker 4: are you going, Pearl?
- 46:12Speaker 3: Okay, I want to go with the movie Days of Confused.
- 46:15Speaker 3: They ended with Low Rider playing as Matthew McConaughey.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Wait, Slow Ride?
- 46:20Speaker 3: Slow Ride.
- 46:21Speaker 5: Slow Ride by Foghead. That's a great call by you.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Well, there he goes. I misheard the lyric. I always
- 46:26Speaker 3: thought it was Low Ride.
- 46:27Speaker 5: Slow Ride by Foghead.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Low ride.
- 46:31Speaker 5: I think it's slow ride, but I'm actually 100% sure.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I screwed it up.
- 46:35Speaker 4: We had a few mistakes today. I think I had one, too.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Did I call Clay Helton of USC Clay Harbor?
- 46:40Speaker 3: You absolutely did, former NFL.
- 46:41Speaker 5: Tight end.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and I called Jared Wayne. I don't even know
- 46:44Speaker 3: what I called him. He's a wide receiver on the text.
- 46:46Speaker 3: I called him Jack Wayne. No relation to Reggie Wayne
- 46:49Speaker 3: or Bruce Wayne.
- 46:50Speaker 5: We need Tony Reale here.
- 46:51Speaker 4: We need Reale to stop by to be stat boy
- 46:53Speaker 4: and call out our mistakes. I think I won this one.
- 46:56Speaker 4: I mean, running down a dream by Tom Petty. is
- 46:59Speaker 4: a road trip song. Jimmy Waters, birthday boy wins this
- 47:01Speaker 4: one hands down. Of course, I can't lose today, but
- 47:04Speaker 4: Tom Petty can't lose.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Yeah, but running out of dream is, did you have
- 47:07Speaker 3: to have a song that had some sort of movement
- 47:09Speaker 3: to it? Because I think you can listen to a
- 47:11Speaker 3: song and enjoy it, even if it's not about driving.
- 47:13Speaker 4: It's a sure thing. It's a road trip song about
- 47:15Speaker 4: road tripping. I couldn't lose there with Tom Petty.
- 47:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I know you love Tom Petty, so that's
- 47:20Speaker 3: your birthday present.
- 47:21Speaker 5: All right, here we go.
- 47:21Speaker 4: You know, if it can't get any better around here,
- 47:23Speaker 4: we're in a great mood. It's time for the feel good.
- 47:25Speaker 4: We love the feel good. You're going to love the
- 47:27Speaker 4: feel good.
- 47:28Speaker 5: This one's interesting. Check this out, Pearl.
- 47:30Speaker 4: The feel-good we're going to go out to Evanston, Illinois.
- 47:33Speaker 4: New stadium for Northwestern. They just waxed Colorado.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Look at that place.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Gorge. Why? Is it for Northwestern football?
- 47:44Speaker 5: It's not that big. It's like 40,000 people. Intimate.
- 47:47Speaker 8: Friendly.
- 47:48Speaker 4: What you're looking at there is called the student wall.
- 47:51Speaker 4: It's standing room only for the student section. You can't
- 47:54Speaker 4: sit there.
- 47:55Speaker 3: But it's Northwestern football. You probably want to sit. This
- 47:57Speaker 3: isn't Cameron. You're not watching Duke basketball. What are you
- 48:00Speaker 3: going to stand up for the whole time?
- 48:01Speaker 5: Oh, Northwestern football.
- 48:02Speaker 4: They're forcing their students to stand at attention for Northwestern
- 48:05Speaker 4: football games.
- 48:06Speaker 5: It is a gutsy move.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I would not have put any energy into the field.
- 48:09Speaker 3: I would have put it all in the press box. Honestly,
- 48:10Speaker 3: you're going to have more famous journalists coming out of
- 48:13Speaker 3: Northwestern than football players.
- 48:15Speaker 4: So if they're in the fourth quarter, they're up 41-7
- 48:17Speaker 4: on Colorado, do you just lay down?
- 48:19Speaker 5: Do you lean against the bar? What do you do there?
- 48:22Speaker 3: I think you walk out and go to the local pub.
- 48:24Speaker 5: You probably do.
- 48:25Speaker 4: All right, thanks a lot. Tune in tomorrow to the
- 48:27Speaker 4: Dan Patrick Show. A lot of big guests on DP tomorrow.
- 48:29Speaker 4: And then right after that, tune in to Not So
- 48:31Speaker 4: Fast here on NBC Sports Now and Peacock.
- 48:33Speaker 5: That's it for us. We're done. Enjoy the football tonight.
- 48:36Speaker 5: Go somebody.
