- 0:14What's going on everybody, I am very excited today.
- 0:19I, I've mentioned to you guys many times and what you've
- 0:22started seeing is more and more conversations with experts in
- 0:26the industry, with influential people in the industry.
- 0:29And today I have a long time dealer, long time collector,
- 0:35auction house owner. I mean, you, you now have a
- 0:38podcast. This is Jeremy Johnson, also
- 0:41known as the Texas Snowman. How are you my friend?
- 0:45Doing great. Thanks for having me on man
- 0:46appreciate it. Yeah, I'm excited you and Chris
- 0:50Sewell started up your Collector Investor podcast.
- 0:55What was it maybe three months ago or something?
- 0:58I think we just did our 10th episode, so maybe, yeah. 2 1/2
- 1:01months. Three months, yeah.
- 1:02Yeah, I listened to them. I haven't listened to the most
- 1:04recent one. I've listened to all the other
- 1:06ones. I think they're fantastic.
- 1:09And then Theo, you know, all of us in the YouTube community love
- 1:12Theo and he's a great little auxiliary, you know, accessory
- 1:18into it. He's a great guy.
- 1:19So that's always fun when he pops on.
- 1:22And we'll talk more about that. But today, the main thing I
- 1:26wanted to talk about cause something that I, I study on my
- 1:30channel and I research on my channel are trends that are
- 1:34happening in the card market, in the card industry.
- 1:38And what's, what's going up, what's going down, what's
- 1:41getting hot, what's getting cold?
- 1:43And I reached out and I said, what are a couple of areas that
- 1:48you've noticed some explosion in, some upward trajectory in
- 1:55and you fired off too. And we're going to take a look
- 1:58at those. So I just want to get straight
- 2:01into it right away. So here we go.
- 2:05I'm going to pull up on my screen.
- 2:06If you're watching again, this is Jeremy Johnson, AKA the Texas
- 2:12Snowman, who is the owner of Collector Investor Auctions, CIA
- 2:18Auctions, who we talk about all the time on the channel.
- 2:21I just bought 2 cards. In fact, we might look at those
- 2:23later on. I just bought 2 cards in the
- 2:25auction that ended on Sunday. And my dad has been a consignor
- 2:29twice I've been a consignor, but here we go.
- 2:33All right, let's take a look at. Sorry, is that the single most
- 2:39good looking thumbnail you've ever made, do you think?
- 2:42It's pretty good, man. I mean, look at it's got the
- 2:45snowman in Texas. It's got you on there with your
- 2:49music school shirt on. I just when I was trying to find
- 2:53a picture of you, I, I, I like this one because you were
- 2:56smiling. So I went with that one.
- 3:00All right, here we go. So items with recent upward
- 3:03trends and then I'm going to look at some data to support
- 3:08this. So the first one you mentioned
- 3:10to me was pre war presidential cards.
- 3:15Now I know that you sold. I think there was an Abraham
- 3:18Lincoln card like an Ogden Abraham Lincoln in the last CIA
- 3:23auction. What is when when you said pre
- 3:28war presidential cards. Tell me before we start looking
- 3:31at some data to show just how much they've boomed what what's
- 3:37your experience or what's your evidence or what's the anecdotal
- 3:41situation that you have where you've that came right to mind?
- 3:47Well, number one, I, I hear more and more people talking about
- 3:50non sports than they used to. You know, that back in the day,
- 3:53especially when Chris and I started non sports is like, ah,
- 3:56that's, that's, that's non sports.
- 3:57You know, that's how I viewed it anyway.
- 3:59I was more of a sports guy, so I was probably biased to that.
- 4:02It's certainly always been around and people have always
- 4:04wanted it, but I've just noticed a lot more people talking about
- 4:08it. And when more people talk about
- 4:10it, generally more people are interested in it too.
- 4:13But if you just look at the prices that it's sold for, you
- 4:15know, look at it five years ago, three years ago, two years ago,
- 4:181, you know, you can just see the trend that's there.
- 4:22And there there's other, other reasons I have for that.
- 4:25Like, for example, you know, the 250th anniversary of the United
- 4:31States, right? I, I, I, I'd see a pretty good
- 4:35opportunity for presidential cards like that to have a bump.
- 4:38Maybe they won't, they may not, but I see a potential there.
- 4:42And also things are just becoming, I, I think it's
- 4:46becoming a lot more popular. You know, like, oh man, look at
- 4:49that cool George Washington or that cool Abe Lincoln, you know
- 4:52what I mean? Abe Lincoln's probably the most
- 4:53popular one, and I've just seen them go up, and I think there's
- 4:58a high trajectory there. One thing that I'm really
- 5:00holding onto are called CDVS, Carte de Vista.
- 5:05Are you familiar with those? I'm not.
- 5:06No, tell me. Yeah, so CDVS, carte de Vista,
- 5:11they were, I, I believe audience, correct me if I'm
- 5:15wrong here, but I believe they started around 18 sixties,
- 5:191860s, I believe when they started, me and Chris joke
- 5:22around and say it was Abe Lincoln's play in Days, you
- 5:24know, and but anyway, so they, they had these cards and, you
- 5:31know, they would pass them out as like a gift or promotion or,
- 5:35you know, just like a, you know, going to a party or something
- 5:37and hand them out or whatever, you know.
- 5:39And so they, they just sit around.
- 5:42PSA does not currently grade them.
- 5:46And I believe there's a chance that PSA will grade them.
- 5:50Don't know if they will 10 years from now I may still have them
- 5:52raw and you know, I'm deciding, OK, I guess I'll sell them now,
- 5:56you know, but but I believe that PSA could possibly grade them
- 5:59and if they do, look what happened with the star cards
- 6:02star basketball. My goodness, it exploded when
- 6:06PSA started grading them in in a way, not that they needed to be
- 6:10legitimized, but when PSA started grading them, it further
- 6:15legitimized the the the 84 star, you know, one O 1 specifically,
- 6:20and it just absolutely exploded right.
- 6:22So yeah, I could see that same thing happening with some of
- 6:25those CD VS. I have a bunch.
- 6:27I've sold very few of them and I probably will be holding them
- 6:31for the long term. Yeah, another one that that is
- 6:35along those lines and and what you just described about how PSA
- 6:39quote, UN quote, legitimizing a card or type of card I think is
- 6:45an opportunity for people. And I think you holding them is
- 6:48smart thinking that might happen.
- 6:51Like some of those Bond bread cards like the Bond bread Jackie
- 6:54Robinson, like the clip corner cards that went into the loaves
- 6:58of bread like those right now are SGC like that That's the
- 7:03place to get them graded. And if all of a sudden PSA were
- 7:06to say this 47 Jackie Robinson card, we're now going to start
- 7:12grading like that could be the the next star Jordan, like in
- 7:16theory. I think that that's a really
- 7:19interesting point. Now, other than the the CDV's,
- 7:23are there other sets? And we're going to look at some
- 7:26examples here in a second. Are there any you mentioned
- 7:29Lincoln, you mentioned CDV's, are there certain presidents or
- 7:34political figures in particular that kind of stand out besides
- 7:38Lincoln, are there certain sets that stand out?
- 7:41And then again, we're going to look at some data to show it's
- 7:44been an explosion of this stuff. But any, anybody or any release
- 7:50in particular? It's hard to beat the caramels,
- 7:54the, the, the 30 twos, right? I mean, you have the red, you
- 7:58have the three different colors in that set.
- 8:00That's really cool. Those are very, very popular.
- 8:03Dukes Duke cigarettes are very popular.
- 8:06You know, there's several out there that are very, very, very
- 8:10popular, right? And, and they're still
- 8:12affordable. A lot of them are still
- 8:13affordable as well. Yeah.
- 8:15But I, I think it's just personal preference, you know,
- 8:17like some of them have some of them have a really aesthetically
- 8:20pleasing back and some of them look really cool on the front.
- 8:23So, you know, just depends on the, the, the appetite of the
- 8:28collector, I guess what they like.
- 8:30Yeah, I I agree. And, and it's funny because I
- 8:33was telling you off camera a second ago, like a week ago, I
- 8:37bought 2 Teddy Roosevelt cards that haven't even arrived yet.
- 8:44After between, between then is when you said, yeah, these have
- 8:48been hot. I'm like, yeah, I just paid up
- 8:51for some. But so here's one in particular.
- 8:54So I just wanted to show a trajectory of value here to
- 8:58illustrate exactly what you just were saying.
- 9:02So this particular set is the N 346 and George Washington
- 9:08obviously is going to be one of the bigger names.
- 9:10And when you're talking presidential cards, So this card
- 9:14in an authentic sold for 368 and 288 back in 2024.
- 9:22In 2025 in a four, it sold for 5200.
- 9:28This SGC 2 just sold a week ago for $8800.
- 9:38Wow, so I didn't see that sale. It's crazy.
- 9:40Yeah. So when you talk about a four a
- 9:44year ago in PSA 5200 and then an SGC 2 goes for 8833.
- 9:52Now this is a record sale for this card, but it just shows a
- 9:56massive trajectory. Yeah, that sold.
- 10:02It was literally not even it was like a week, a week and a half
- 10:06ago. I guess it was OK here's another
- 10:09one. Same, same set here.
- 10:13This is no, this is the NN15 set.
- 10:16Sorry about that. This is the N 15 set.
- 10:19Ulysses S Grant. Again, not the biggest name, but
- 10:22still, you know a household name.
- 10:25Ulysses S Grant. This card in APSA Four in 2023
- 10:32sold for $300, and it just sold in APSA 5 for $4800.
- 10:40Wow. So I mean, we're talking about,
- 10:45you know, 15X and now granted a jump from A4 to A5, but this is
- 10:51a freshly graded 1, which there might be, you know, that might
- 10:54be part of it, But that's again, we're talking significant
- 10:58numbers where these cards used to be routinely in the hundreds
- 11:02and now they're jumping into the thousands.
- 11:04Now one of the more recognizable and most collected sets pre war
- 11:09non sport is the N 76. I have AI have a couple of these
- 11:16cards. My buddy Mookie Chilson has a
- 11:18couple of these cards. So this card, April 16th, 2024,
- 11:25OK, April 16th 2024 this 1.5 S two years ago, almost exactly 2
- 11:32years ago in a 1.5, this card sold for $338.
- 11:37The exact same card. It's the same exact card, just
- 11:42closed 10 days ago from when we're recording this for $1600.
- 11:49So it was a 4.8 X in literally under 2 years, which is just
- 11:56wild. I mean, it's, it's wild.
- 11:59And then I think I have one more.
- 12:01So this is the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln.
- 12:06There's a, a set of these where there's different kind of
- 12:09historical moments, you know, crossing the Delaware and
- 12:12there's yeah, they're very cool and they're more affordable.
- 12:17They're not as expensive as some.
- 12:20As soon as you get before 1900, the price tends to kind of jump
- 12:24up quite a bit. But this one went up 2.7 X
- 12:29still, it's only $410. But so I mean, this to me, I
- 12:33just wanted to kind of it's, it's easy for us to say, yeah,
- 12:37presidential cards have gone up. But when you actually see those
- 12:42numbers, you go, holy, holy goodness.
- 12:45Actually, you know, I had one more screen.
- 12:47These are the cards I just bought.
- 12:49So I just bought these a week ago.
- 12:52This is AT175 which this is 19 O one that the card on the left
- 12:58was printed. It came in a sweet cap
- 13:00cigarettes. It was on a panel and they were
- 13:02hand cut cards and 19 O1 is actually the same year that
- 13:07Roosevelt became president after an assassination.
- 13:10So he became president 19 O1. This is a 19 O1 card and it's in
- 13:16APSA 2, pretty freshly graded, sold for $245, which to me,
- 13:22Teddy Roosevelt, he's not a blink in a George Washington,
- 13:25but you know, he's in the mix. That still seems fairly
- 13:29affordable. And then this E 50 set is pretty
- 13:34cool. It's got a few historical like
- 13:36Western figures. And I got this SGC 3 was $389.
- 13:42Again, I just like the eye appeal.
- 13:43I thought they were cool looking.
- 13:44I'm like, I need to have those now, I guess.
- 13:49I guess let me just with you kind of hypothesize a little bit
- 13:53further more people have been talking about them, but why?
- 13:58I mean, these cards are 130 hundred, 140 years old in some
- 14:03cases. Like why in the last two years
- 14:05would they, do you think that they've jumped like what would
- 14:10be besides the 250th year thing? Like, because a lot of the times
- 14:15what will happen is like, I'll say, you know, I think vintage
- 14:17football cards are a good buy and people go, well, they've
- 14:21always been cheap, but they're going to always be cheap.
- 14:24Well, these were always cheap and now these have suddenly
- 14:26jumped. So what there's got to be more
- 14:29than just for coming up on the 250th birthday.
- 14:31Like in your experience in the market, what are the triggers
- 14:36that that make something like that happen?
- 14:41I think 1 you look at historically things that weren't
- 14:44really worth much now are and people just do some digging and
- 14:48investigating in that and say what else is there?
- 14:50You know, 'cause you know, the, the major, the four, the BIG4
- 14:53sports, you know, there's, there's still some cards in
- 14:55there that could be opportunities to really go up
- 14:58certainly all over the place in the four sports.
- 15:01But what else could there be? Right?
- 15:03Like my second thing that I was going to say is soccer, man,
- 15:07soccer, soccer has a lot of room to go up, right?
- 15:12But and there you go. Yeah, soccer is just absolutely.
- 15:16You have has massive potential. But you know, besides the 250
- 15:21year thing there, there's there's more and more
- 15:24documentaries coming out about history, America's history
- 15:27there. There's more and more things.
- 15:29You know what? One of the things that really,
- 15:31of course, makes Abe Lincoln stand out is what he did that
- 15:36created the Civil War, you know, and in in, in wanting to abolish
- 15:41slavery. And that's a that's a very
- 15:43popular topic all the time. So that makes him even more so
- 15:48iconic than even, you know, George Washington, arguably.
- 15:50So, you know, are there other things that people are going to
- 15:54really grab onto historically? Like, Oh my gosh, I didn't know
- 15:56that about this guy. I want to collect him because
- 15:59that's really cool. So, so some of that is just more
- 16:01people becoming more knowledgeable about Wow.
- 16:04There's there's presidential cards from pre war that are just
- 16:07out there. Wow, that's really cool.
- 16:09And they start looking into it and maybe they kind of similar
- 16:12to football cards like Wow, it's really affordable.
- 16:14I'm going to grab that and throw it in my PC and Fast forward now
- 16:17it's worth a bunch. Some are hitting the market and
- 16:19they start selling. Other people could see it as an
- 16:22investment, right? Like I, I think there's a lot of
- 16:24room to go up here. I think it our history isn't
- 16:27going away. I think it's going to continue
- 16:29to go up. So everybody has different
- 16:33driving forces that lead them into certain things.
- 16:36But ultimately, look at the numbers.
- 16:38I mean, it's definitely got up. And to be clear, like I will
- 16:42never say hey, buy this and buy this you will make.
- 16:45I will never say that. Of course it could go down 50%
- 16:49tomorrow. But I personally believe and I'm
- 16:52personally investing in soccer and pre wars.
- 16:55So I'm putting my money where my mouth is.
- 16:56Yeah, I believe it's going to go up.
- 16:58And you know what, honestly, if it doesn't, I'm not putting
- 17:01myself in a financial position where it's like, oh man, I'm in
- 17:04trouble now because they didn't go up like I'm, I'm, I'm hedging
- 17:08my bets, if you will. I'm putting some in there.
- 17:10Plus, honestly, I like it. It's cool.
- 17:12I'm not just doing it as an investor.
- 17:14I really do like PC ING some of this stuff too.
- 17:17Yeah, yeah, I, I love this stuff.
- 17:19Like the ones that I get in hand are just, they're gorgeous cards
- 17:24and, and they do. They're like little pieces of
- 17:27Americana. You know, it might partly be
- 17:30too, is that some cards have hit such incredible numbers that
- 17:35you're like, you know, this Hondas Wagner card, these cards
- 17:39had just sold for three, $4 million.
- 17:42And you're like, Hondas Wagner was was really, really good.
- 17:48That startled me. I was like, holy crap, what is
- 17:51that? It's your phone.
- 17:55That's funny when I think that Hondas Wagner was really, really
- 18:00good. But how do you make the argument
- 18:03that Hondas Wagner's more important than Abe Lincoln?
- 18:06And some of these cards that we're talking about, like Abe
- 18:09Lincoln or George Washington are rarer than the Hannes Wagner
- 18:13card. And so you're like, I mean, like
- 18:16the cards I just showed a second ago that I just picked up the
- 18:19Teddy Roosevelt cards, Like both of those are like populations
- 18:22under 20. And it's it's Theodore
- 18:26Roosevelt. I mean, a very important
- 18:29historical figure. So I think maybe part of it too
- 18:33is people are starting to consider cards to be a, a form
- 18:37of an asset class, an investable asset.
- 18:42And when you think of OK, well, let me think back 100 years.
- 18:46Who was important 100 years ago? Who are the most important
- 18:49people now? Baseball players were important
- 18:53in society and in American history for sure.
- 18:56Jackie Robinson, obviously, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, obviously, but
- 19:01so was so was Teddy Roosevelt and George Washington and Abe
- 19:06Lincoln. So all right, let's look at your
- 19:08second category that you threw out to me and a few examples of
- 19:12that. Now, when you say soccer cards,
- 19:15are you thinking more modern soccer cards or more vintage
- 19:19soccer cards? All of it.
- 19:21Like, what is what is it that you think of when you think of,
- 19:25yeah, soccer cards are going crazy.
- 19:29Both, you know, you look at a a messy rookie, right?
- 19:33I mean, some of the more valuable RIP, messy rookies look
- 19:36like a, you know, pretty boring paper card, you know, there you
- 19:40go. Right.
- 19:41And man, they're expensive, you know what I mean?
- 19:44So it's gone up tremendous. Yeah. 4X in two years.
- 19:48There you go 4X in two years. But at the same time I sold a
- 19:52Kaboom Messy and it had recently almost doubled in price in a
- 19:59very short period of time. Instead of two years, it was
- 20:02like 3 months, you know what I mean?
- 20:03Almost doubled in three months. So it, it's, it's really not
- 20:08isolated to older soccer or like vintage like Pele, you know, for
- 20:13example. It's really not.
- 20:15It's really not. He came prepared, man those.
- 20:18I'm always prepared. I'm a teacher.
- 20:20Always. Man, always it's not isolated to
- 20:23vintage, it's not isolated to like messy rookie era.
- 20:26It's not isolated to modern. It's soccer in general.
- 20:29And you know, Chris and I talked about this some on our podcast,
- 20:33but you know, at the end of the day, look what Fanatics is doing
- 20:39right? Right.
- 20:40Chris and I years ago said Fanatics is probably going to
- 20:42take over the world. You know, like they're just,
- 20:44they got their hands in so many things and they are definitely,
- 20:48you know, growing by leaps and bounds.
- 20:50But you know, one major thing that Fanatics really wants to do
- 20:55is touch other countries, the rest of the world.
- 20:58And what's the number one sport worldwide by far, Not even
- 21:01close. Soccer, right?
- 21:03My amazement, I believe the second one is cricket.
- 21:05I thought it was basketball, but I think the second one's
- 21:07cricket. So, you know, soccer has a vast
- 21:11untapped resource out there being other countries.
- 21:14And they are die hard soccer fans largely, you know, so there
- 21:18really is a massive, massive market for that outside of the
- 21:22US and inside of the US. It has so much upside that I
- 21:27personally have like I just bought a couple of Messy's and
- 21:31I'm I'm holding on to them. Will it be a good investment?
- 21:34Time will tell. You know, if something was a
- 21:36guarantee and we, you and I could identify it's a guarantee,
- 21:41it's going to go up. I mean, we'd be, you know,
- 21:44extra, extra wealthy, right? Because we can just buy it all
- 21:47and sit on it and we know exactly what's going to happen.
- 21:49So even though it looks like that, you never know what's
- 21:51going to happen, but I see enough evidence that I feel
- 21:56pretty comfortable in in buying some soccer cards.
- 21:59So I have. I've bought some soccer cards.
- 22:01Yeah, I, I think what you just said is a big part of it.
- 22:04I, I do think that Fanatics is going global.
- 22:07And if Fanatics does go global, then soccer is the biggest
- 22:12global sport. It just makes sense.
- 22:14And when you think soccer the, you know, vintage soccer, the
- 22:19first thing you think is Pele and then you think Miradona and
- 22:23you know, those are the two big guys.
- 22:25Then if you look so on the screen, I'm sharing, you know
- 22:29this, a lot of people would consider this to be Pele's best
- 22:33rookie card. He has several.
- 22:34So it's hard to say it this isn't my favorite of his, but
- 22:38this is. It's a big one, yeah.
- 22:40It's a big one. And it was averaging this time
- 22:45last year, it was averaging about $6800 and now it's
- 22:51averaging over $9000 just one year later.
- 22:54I mean, 34%. I mean, that's, that's an
- 22:57amazing run for the S&P, you know, and then you mentioned the
- 23:01messy. The messy has gone nuts over the
- 23:04last couple years. It was this is APSA 7.
- 23:09And in February of 2024, it was a $4000 card.
- 23:14Now that card is $15,000. And then I threw in Ronaldo
- 23:20because, you know, there's always the people that say
- 23:22Ronaldo's better than Messi, which I don't agree with, but I,
- 23:25I hear what they're saying. In that same amount of time, the
- 23:30Ronaldo was a $1700 card in a four, this is in a four.
- 23:35There's not a ton of sales on this.
- 23:37And, and in a four, it's now selling for 5000.
- 23:40So I think, I think what you just mentioned is, is important
- 23:47for people out there thinking about what do I want to, you
- 23:51know, spend some money on? Cuz again, some people are like,
- 23:54I don't care about value. Some people are all about value.
- 23:58My thought is this, and, and I've said this from the
- 24:00beginning, once I own a card, I don't really care about value
- 24:04unless I go to sell it, which I'm not usually planning to do.
- 24:08But the other thing is when when you buy a card, I tend to want
- 24:13to buy the stuff now that I think is going to be
- 24:17unaffordable soon. Yeah.
- 24:19So if I think presidential cards are going to go way up, I'm
- 24:23going to go buy my Teddy Roosevelt cards now instead of
- 24:26in three years after they've gone up.
- 24:29So to me, value matters even if I don't care about once I have
- 24:34it, it matters because I want to buy it while it's still cheap.
- 24:39And, and so, you know, when you, when you think about, OK, what's
- 24:44next? You know, what's the next thing
- 24:46that could pop? What are some other cuz these
- 24:48have gone up. I, I personally think both still
- 24:51have a lot of run up in them frankly, cuz you look at a
- 24:55George Washington card versus a Mickey Mantle card and Mickey
- 24:58Mantle's still way more, you know, valuable.
- 25:00But but what, what are some other things you would look for
- 25:04and what are some other things that you think are kind of
- 25:07hiding in the weeds out there? Well, first, if I may, going
- 25:11back to soccer real quick. Yeah.
- 25:13So one interesting thing, you know, we we bought a a vast
- 25:18largely pre war collection, but there was a lot of vintage in
- 25:21there too. That was the post war and I
- 25:24noticed that at the height of COVID 2021, right right around
- 25:28there, man, Paylee cards were really high, really high.
- 25:33And then if you look at those comps, as of you know, last
- 25:36year, they they went way down. They were way less right.
- 25:40So it's kind of a head scratcher.
- 25:42Like was it just a market correction that happened?
- 25:44Because if you go back and look like on VCP or card ladder or
- 25:49whatever, you'll see that they were really high in 2021 pay
- 25:53lays right? And then you look 202345.
- 25:56They, they, they had dipped significantly.
- 25:58So makes you wonder like why, why did that happen?
- 26:01Why, why do you do you have any thoughts on that?
- 26:03Like why you think that happened?
- 26:05Yeah, I I think that I noticed that too.
- 26:08And a lot of the Goats during COVID shot way up, you know, a
- 26:12lot of the all time greats and pay lay is largely an all time
- 26:15great. I think one of the things that
- 26:18happened is we are going to be hosting the World Cup here in
- 26:21June. And and so there's a lot of
- 26:24attention on soccer in the US right now.
- 26:29And specifically, I think the money is funneling into who are
- 26:34the legends that will be on the screen right now.
- 26:37So if you have money and you want to put it into soccer cards
- 26:41right now, like we all know Pele, but Pele has passed, you
- 26:45know, in the past years when Pele would be on the, you know,
- 26:49on the sidelines or in the press box or making an appearance at
- 26:53the drawing to see the bracket, Like those were reminders of
- 26:57Pele's greatness. Now that he's gone, we're about
- 27:01to see focus on Cristiano in his last run, you know, Messi in his
- 27:07last run. I think that I think that's part
- 27:10of it. Or people are saying they're
- 27:12about to get all the attention and all the spotlight.
- 27:15I also think to a certain extent, and I know this is
- 27:19counterintuitive, when people pass, there's an initial
- 27:24immediate spike because they're in the news and we're reminded
- 27:27of their greatness. But then when there's that
- 27:30spike, I feel like people flood the market with their stuff.
- 27:34And when they flood the market, then the prices sometimes drop.
- 27:38Like Willie May's cards are less right now than before he died.
- 27:43You know, they spiked right when he died and then they they kind
- 27:46of they fell off a little bit. Now, that's not every card, but
- 27:49a lot of Willie May's cards did that.
- 27:51Sandy Koufax, I mean, he's 91 or something.
- 27:55Like I could see something like that happening.
- 27:58So I think the fact that maybe there was a lot of people were
- 28:01holding until he passed and then they flooded the market might be
- 28:05part of it too. I mean, these are, again, these
- 28:07are all hypotheses and, and I just, I love talking about this
- 28:12stuff. And, and for me, instead of, you
- 28:14know, just looking at numbers of what a card has done and up and
- 28:18down, I like to think, well, why?
- 28:20And if, if presidential cards just did this and soccer cards
- 28:24just did this, what else is out there that could do this that
- 28:27hasn't done it? And, and you know, I, I have a
- 28:32couple of guesses. I have a couple of ideas on on
- 28:35some things that could get some attention over the next few
- 28:40years. I mean, do you have any you'd
- 28:44throw out other than what you've said?
- 28:46I mean, I have a couple. I will say more more broadly, I
- 28:52guess than than than like this one card type of thing would be
- 28:58if you look historically, let's let's just take Mantle for
- 29:01example, OK? So if you look historically at
- 29:04what a 51 Bowman or 52 tops Mantle has done in the last say
- 29:10decade, right, versus a 67 Mantle and a four or something,
- 29:17right, The ROI percentage on those two blue chip cards, the
- 29:2451 and 52 are higher than the 67 or the 61 or the 62 or 60 or
- 29:305958, whatever. So I, I would say with, with
- 29:34greater ROI comes the greater cards or I'm sorry, with the
- 29:38greater cards comes greater ROI, but also greater risk to also
- 29:42because you're paying more, right?
- 29:44Makes sense. But historically, I would, I
- 29:46would say there's a lot of evidence to support that if you
- 29:50buy the top end cards or among the top end cards of a player,
- 29:54then those tend to go up more percentage wise than a lesser
- 29:59card. That's still a good card will.
- 30:01So you know, whatever it is, whether it's, you know, a 32
- 30:05caramel Lincoln or Washington or, or whoever it is, or you
- 30:11know, a, a red or an orange or a blue, you know, there's three
- 30:13different colors in that set or a Dukes or, you know, whatever
- 30:17you're wanting to buy. Use your budget and whatever
- 30:22your budget allows and whatever amount you want to put into that
- 30:26card or any other card, whatever it is, then the the better
- 30:31example that you can get would be my lien would be the better
- 30:35example of whatever cards you want to go after specifically go
- 30:39after that. You know what I mean?
- 30:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's sort of like they tell you,
- 30:43you know, buy the most house you can afford, you know, same sort
- 30:48of thing, like the little bit of a nicer neighborhood is going to
- 30:51pay bigger dividends. And maybe that's partly why
- 30:54we've been seeing some consolidation because a lot of
- 30:57people are saying, why is there this consolidation movement?
- 31:00You know, why are people getting rid of these other cards, which
- 31:03are are great cards, but the lot of those cards are easier to
- 31:09find right now and the prices are kind of dropping, but the
- 31:12big stuff is going nuts. And I think that's, I think
- 31:15that's on par with what you're saying.
- 31:17And, and a 67 Mantle's a great card.
- 31:19I love 67 Mantle, 60 mantle, 58 Mantle, whatever, you know, and,
- 31:23and at the end of the day, there's a lot of evidence to
- 31:26support that, you know what I mean?
- 31:27But but what's really important is is like, don't lose sight of
- 31:31the collector in US. You know what I mean?
- 31:33Like I could collect a lot of different cards.
- 31:36Most of what I collect is as a collector and I do have some
- 31:42investment type things in my PC like soccer, for example.
- 31:46Honestly, personally, I don't really care much about soccer.
- 31:49I'm a baseball guy and football guy mostly, you know, but I have
- 31:54some soccer cards because I have those as an investment piece.
- 31:58They're not really, you know, not a collector near and dear to
- 32:01my heart like a lot of my other cards are, you know what I mean?
- 32:04But but I have them. So 11, just a word of wisdom, I
- 32:09guess, in that and, and caution is don't overextend yourself to
- 32:14buy something you think may go up because number one, it might
- 32:17not go up. Everything we're saying we could
- 32:20Fast forward this, take two years from now and everything's
- 32:22down. You know what I mean?
- 32:24So, but but just don't go too far in the weeds financially
- 32:29with your budget. Do use wisdom and just, you
- 32:32know, buy what you like at at the end of the day, there's a
- 32:35lot of different things we can invest in Craig, that that could
- 32:38be great investment pieces. I personally like to do it in
- 32:42two ways. And I think this will be really,
- 32:43I think this is interesting #1 when I buy a deal, I largely buy
- 32:49collections. Now I do buy singles from people
- 32:51and I might buy 5 to 10 cards or one card or whatever, but I, I
- 32:55buy a lot of collections, a lot of set runs, a lot of different
- 32:57things like that and huge T2O6 super nerd.
- 33:01That's my favorite set of all time is T2O6, but I like to keep
- 33:06at least one card from a deal that I buy because I have a
- 33:10memory attached to that card. Oh, I remember I bought this
- 33:13from that really nice older gentleman that collected packs
- 33:16of RIP packs and see what since 1953 and he pulled this 53
- 33:21mantle from that. I, I, I love this card.
- 33:23I have a memory attached to it. So I like to click that way #1
- 33:27and #2 I like to collect things that I feel are #1 I like, but
- 33:33#2 that I feel are a really good long term hold or something like
- 33:37that of, of players that I enjoy.
- 33:40Because there's a lot of different options out there.
- 33:43You can collect that you you want to make.
- 33:47You want to make sure if you're spending 100 bucks, it's not
- 33:48going to be worth 25 years from now ideally, right?
- 33:51You do want it to be worth around what you paid or more
- 33:54hopefully. But I would rather do that with
- 33:56players I like and cards I like because I'm going to look at it.
- 33:59I'm not just going to throw it in a vault and never look at it
- 34:01again. Nothing wrong with that.
- 34:03I personally like to pull them out sometimes and go through
- 34:05them and look at them and appreciate them.
- 34:06So I want to collect things I like and I want to collect
- 34:10things that have a memory attached to it.
- 34:12Yeah, no, I love that. And and a lot of the times the
- 34:15memory attached to it, where you were when you bought it, who you
- 34:19were with when you were bought it, who you bought it from adds
- 34:23an emotional value which makes that card more valuable to you
- 34:27than it does on paper, which makes it even more fun to have
- 34:32in your collection. Now I want to transition briefly
- 34:36too and, and talk about, again, we mentioned at the beginning,
- 34:39but I want to talk about a little bit more.
- 34:42So, you know, you started an auction house like a year and a
- 34:46half ago, right? And, and, you know, I've talked
- 34:50about it many times. CIA collector, investor
- 34:53auctions. You guys just had your March
- 34:58auction ended. And in fact, I, I think this
- 35:01might be the first time I'm sharing this on my channel, but
- 35:03I ended up buying 2 cards in that auction.
- 35:06I'm going to put them on the screen here.
- 35:08Yeah, this 97 Pinnacle Artist proof Jeter.
- 35:14I absolutely love this card. That's cool.
- 35:17Yeah, so I was thrilled. I, I got into a little bit of a
- 35:20bidding war. I I ended up going a little.
- 35:22Higher duped it out and won. I was like.
- 35:25I'm not losing. I guess this was, this is only
- 35:28like, I mean, when did this end like four or five days ago,
- 35:31right? Sunday.
- 35:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was up in, I was up in the
- 35:36Lake Tahoe area with my wife and I'm sitting there on my phone
- 35:39like on that. Yeah.
- 35:42Yeah, and then I also got this cool Metal Universe Diamond Soul
- 35:47card, which isn't a super expensive card, but to your
- 35:50point, it's an awesome looking card.
- 35:54It's Derek Jeter, it's Metal Universe.
- 35:57It's an insert. You know it.
- 35:59It's not a hike, it's an 8, which in cards like that isn't,
- 36:02it's not bad. And you know, I know everybody
- 36:05thinks of me out there listening as like a vintage only
- 36:09collector, but I've really been kind of expanding into some more
- 36:13modern stuff too. Now, you had said to me before
- 36:19we started recording that you had a few cards that you were
- 36:22had sitting on your desk that you could give us a little
- 36:25preview of an upcoming auction, maybe April, maybe May.
- 36:30You want to show us a few of those?
- 36:32Give us a little sneak peek. Sure, sure.
- 36:35So the next auction is April 2nd to the 12th and everybody
- 36:39watching the channel knows, you know that before it hits the
- 36:43live, Theo and I will do a preview episode, which is always
- 36:47super fun. And then Theo over on 4
- 36:50Collectors is always doing the the live stream of the closing
- 36:56of the of the auction. So show us what you got.
- 36:59I'm going to put you on full screen while you kind of show us
- 37:02and talk about what you got here.
- 37:03Sure, sure. So everything I'm showing you is
- 37:07from one of our consignors and he consigns monthly with us.
- 37:11But there's a nice T2061 speaker, there is a Frank Chance
- 37:19Old mill and a four. This is right up my alley for PC
- 37:22ING. By the way, old Mill, old Mill,
- 37:24Baxter, right in the sweet spot. They're not super expensive, but
- 37:27they're not, they're not common either, right?
- 37:30Right. It's right under my wheelhouse
- 37:32and I have to temper myself sometimes because as you know, I
- 37:37never have placed a single bid in my auction house and never
- 37:40will place a single bid in my auction house.
- 37:42Rightfully so. And you know, if I ever, I won't
- 37:46ever. But, but if I were to, it would
- 37:47purely be as a collector, I won't touch it with a 10 foot
- 37:50pole because there's just too many.
- 37:53There's too many people that do that and it's manipulative.
- 37:56They're shell bidding. I I won't touch that with a 10
- 37:58foot pole. So I see this stuff all the time
- 38:00and I'm like, gosh, I really want that man.
- 38:03Dang it. No.
- 38:04And so there we go. That is cycle back.
- 38:07Yep, Yep, Yep, that is. Cycle back.
- 38:12Cycle 350. Yeah, Cycle 350.
- 38:14So recycle 350 and recycle 460. We got a Mordecai 3 finger brown
- 38:20and a three. Nice. 3-4 finger.
- 38:26Then we have Oh yeah, here we go, Gibson, Rook and A6.
- 38:31No, that thing is sharp. Yeah, it's off centered, but
- 38:35it's. Oh, they're all off center.
- 38:36Every Bob Gibson Rook is off center.
- 38:38Definitely a lot of 54 maze and A7.
- 38:43Nice. You.
- 38:44That's a beauty, man. The yellow on that's glowing,
- 38:47yes. I really like this card.
- 38:50Man, this is pretty sweet. That's nice. 53 tops Jackie and
- 38:55a six if you're listening. Yeah, sorry.
- 38:57Sorry for the glare. Yeah, 53 Robinson and a 656
- 39:02Jackie and a six. Nice.
- 39:07And 54 McKee, Mantel and A5. Nice.
- 39:14And this is gorgeous. 56 Maze and an 8.
- 39:19Wow. Absolute, absolute beauty.
- 39:23And last but not least, a 55 Jackie Robinson in a 5 1/2.
- 39:28Several jackies and that's well centered one too.
- 39:31That's a tough setting card too. I, I think one of the things I
- 39:34like the most, love the most about this in owning an auction
- 39:38house is it's like Christmas when I open my consigners items
- 39:43because I, I never know what they're going to send.
- 39:46And you know, many of our consigners, you know, they'll,
- 39:48they'll text us pictures of what they're sending us just so we
- 39:51can confirm we have everything. But others, they just sent me a
- 39:53box and say, here's the tracking and I'm like, OK, we don't have
- 39:56any idea until we open that box what's in there.
- 39:58And sometimes there's a spreadsheet, sometimes they're
- 40:00not. And we always videotape opening
- 40:01it and everything. But you know, it's just cool not
- 40:05knowing sometimes. What we're getting, it's just
- 40:08fun. And even if we do know what
- 40:10we're getting, because they they send us pictures or a
- 40:12spreadsheet, we don't know what we're getting until, you know, a
- 40:16few weeks before the auction. So it's still like Christmas.
- 40:18You know what I mean? That's how I feel when the the
- 40:22preview goes live. When the preview goes live, it's
- 40:24like, oh, sweet, let's go. And it's just like, you know,
- 40:27seeing what's in there. And then you start you start
- 40:29hitting your watch list and you know, because I, I mean, in this
- 40:33last auction, I had six or seven things I was watching, but then
- 40:35it just over, you know, narrows, narrows as prices are going and
- 40:39doing their thing. So last thing I want to ask and
- 40:42I appreciate your time and you coming on.
- 40:44And sharing your. Thoughts.
- 40:45This is yeah, this has been fun. You know, there are, there are a
- 40:50lot of auction house options out there.
- 40:53And, you know, there's a lot of big names that people have heard
- 40:58for a long time. And, you know, a year and a half
- 41:01ago you said I'm going to, I'm going to do an auction house
- 41:04too. Like what?
- 41:05How would you say you're differentiated?
- 41:08Like what's different about CIA auctions compared to some of
- 41:14these other auction houses that are out there so that people can
- 41:18just get an idea of, you know, why?
- 41:21Why CIA instead of someone else? Both.
- 41:24Both maybe as a consignor, but also as a buyer, Yeah.
- 41:30Great question, fair question. Largely I'm a big fan of letting
- 41:36the public answer that question, you know, because they are the
- 41:40ones that had a vast majority in a way non bias opinion and and
- 41:46experience. And what I mean that I mean, it
- 41:48wasn't a close friend of mine the bid in the that that
- 41:50consigned in the auction or something, you know, it's like
- 41:52people that consigned to the auction had a genuine
- 41:55experience. What was it?
- 41:57And I've heard a lot of great feedback from our consignors and
- 42:01from our bidders. So I, I love just letting the,
- 42:04the, the masses in the public say, you know, answer that.
- 42:08But in answer to your question, I care first and foremost about
- 42:12the person, not the inventory, not the money.
- 42:15That's the number one biggest thing.
- 42:16I care more about you as a person.
- 42:18And my care level about you doesn't reflect if you have a
- 42:22$1.00 card or $1000 card right now.
- 42:26Certainly more time and attention may be needed for
- 42:29those bigger ticket items or something, but it doesn't make
- 42:32you a lesser person because you have a $1.00 card.
- 42:34That's my point. You know what I mean?
- 42:35So I value people. I, I love working with people.
- 42:39I started this because #1I I love this hobby #2 I love
- 42:43networking and talking to people.
- 42:45I'm a talker, so I really enjoy that heavily.
- 42:48I love that. But as a consignor, I can sign a
- 42:52ton of stuff to the auction house every auction and it
- 42:56fetches very, very good prices. We have a very great bitter
- 43:01base. A lot of just die hard
- 43:03collectors and, and people that that really enjoy our content.
- 43:08I've had several people e-mail me and say, Hey, I don't bid in
- 43:11auctions, I bid in yours because I love you.
- 43:13And Chris, I'm like, dude, thank you for supporting us.
- 43:15Really appreciate that. How you liking it.
- 43:17And they give me feedback and I reply to them.
- 43:19You know, so often times a large part of my day is replying to
- 43:24people's emails, texts and calls and just talking, you know what
- 43:28I mean? Not, not a lot of times, not
- 43:30even about a consignment, just just catching up with them, you
- 43:33know what I mean? So I think that's really
- 43:34important. The owner of the company's
- 43:36calling you to see how you're doing.
- 43:38Is that common? Right.
- 43:40I'd, I'd love to hear from the audience.
- 43:41I don't, I don't think so. Yeah.
- 43:44But, you know, I really do love people, you know, and I want to
- 43:46follow the golden rule, treat each other as you want to be
- 43:48treated. Well, I would love to get it,
- 43:50you know, to, to be appreciated and feel like I'm welcomed.
- 43:53And, you know, I, I, I don't have time to call every single
- 43:56bidder and every single consignor, every auction, but I
- 43:59do the best I can. You know what I mean?
- 44:02Another thing I think consignors really, I know they, they really
- 44:05like is I pay very quickly, man, you know, Sunday night when the
- 44:09auction's over, I'm off in time up till 1234 in the morning
- 44:14making invoices, making, you know, working on the consignor
- 44:16statements starting Sunday night, Monday morning, I'm
- 44:19starting to pay consignors like I'm paying them out, you know,
- 44:23and, and my goal is to get every consignor paid within 5 business
- 44:27days. The majority of them are paid
- 44:30within 3. Yeah, I, I, I was literally,
- 44:35like I was saying a minute ago, I was up in Lake Tahoe when this
- 44:37ended on Sunday and Monday morning.
- 44:40I have like 3 friends that consigned in this month's
- 44:44auction. And they literally when I woke
- 44:47up, they said CIA already paid me.
- 44:49And like, they couldn't believe it.
- 44:51Like literally they couldn't believe it.
- 44:53And I was like, yeah, I know. And, you know, just more
- 44:57anecdotal, you know, my dad is he he consigned it's first time
- 45:02in February. And he texted me and he said the
- 45:05way that they treated me, I don't see any reason why I'd
- 45:08ever sell anything anywhere else.
- 45:11That's what my dad said. I mean, that's my dad.
- 45:13Yeah. And and then you know the.
- 45:16Last thing, sorry, that's hilarious.
- 45:18You didn't know he consigned again.
- 45:20No, I didn't. I didn't know he consigned.
- 45:24He did a second consignment and I'm doing the preview for the
- 45:29episode, you know, with Theo, which is super fun because
- 45:32Theo's great and it's fun seeing the stuff.
- 45:35And he goes, well, let's look at your dad's cards.
- 45:37And I was like, my dad, my dad can sign last month.
- 45:39They go, no, he said stuff it again.
- 45:41I didn't even know it. So.
- 45:43But yeah. And then, you know, the the last
- 45:47thing I'll say about it, just to kind of, you know, you know,
- 45:50make sure you know how I feel about you guys is every person
- 45:55who I've interacted with, with CIA is been nothing but awesome.
- 46:01Like you've been really good to me.
- 46:04Chris Sewell, obviously a lot of people know him.
- 46:06He's a great guy. Theo's a great guy.
- 46:08I met Shrek at the West Coast card show.
- 46:11What a sweet guy. Like what a sweet guy.
- 46:15And, you know, just super happy and positive and kind and, and
- 46:21you know, that's all you can ask for in this in the day's day and
- 46:25age that we're in now. You know, you want to feel
- 46:29noticed more than anything. And there's a lot of companies
- 46:32that are taking people for granted and that's not the case
- 46:36with you guys. So I appreciate getting to know
- 46:39you over the last six months or so.
- 46:40I think we first met at the National this year.
- 46:44I'd seen you before and stuff, but you know, I just appreciate
- 46:48everything that you guys have done and, and appreciate your
- 46:50support of the channel. And, and it's, it's a privilege
- 46:54to be able to, you know, be working with you guys and, and
- 46:57communicating with you guys and, and you know, nothing but the
- 47:01best for me and our community for sure.
- 47:03So. Really appreciate it, man.
- 47:05Yeah, thanks so much for having me on.
- 47:07I of course I was excited about this video.
- 47:09Yeah, we'll do it again. We'll do it again.
- 47:12I like to, I like to have conversations from people who
- 47:15are interested and love the same stuff.
- 47:17So, you know, I, I try to cycle people in every few months and
- 47:21you know, I'm trying to get through the last bit of my
- 47:23school year, but over the summer, early summer, something
- 47:26I'll bring you back on if you're up for it.
- 47:28And we'll get more cards and see what's going on and all that
- 47:31kind of stuff. So I appreciate you if you're
- 47:34out there listening and you've not yet signed up either consign
- 47:39or bid at CIA. Highly recommended collector
- 47:42investorauctions.com is the website super easy to navigate
- 47:47the website. There are a couple of times that
- 47:49there was a little bit of feedback and people were saying,
- 47:51hey, you know, it'd be nice if you put a lot number in and then
- 47:54boom, before you know it, they've got now a search by lot
- 47:57number. Like, you know, that's one of
- 47:59the beauties of, you know, a company that's not one of these
- 48:04massive mega auction houses is you, you it's like going to the
- 48:10local coffee shop instead of Starbucks is like they hear you.
- 48:15They they know you, they treat you good.
- 48:18And, and I sure have enjoyed it. So again, sign up over at
- 48:23Collector Investor Auctions if you haven't.
- 48:25Jeremy, I appreciate you coming on the Texas Snowman.
- 48:29It was a pleasure and I look forward to doing it again.
- 48:33Same here my friend. Appreciate you.
- 48:35All right, bud.
