On May 3, 1989, convicted murderer Allan Legere was escorted from a New Brunswick prison to a Moncton hospital for an ear infection. He asked to use the bathroom, unlocked his handcuffs with a sharpened piece of metal he had hidden, and vanished. For 201 days he hid in the woods around the Miramichi River towns that raised him, and a region that had never locked its doors learned to live under siege: guns bought, seniors moved in with relatives, Halloween cancelled.
