- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it is the 19th of
- 0:16November and so glad to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for tapping or play and inviting me in so that we
- 0:22can continue this incredible story in the book of Acts of
- 0:26Jesus inspiring this church as it grows and grows through the
- 0:31power of his spirit. And today is a fascinating
- 0:34reading. Today is this perfect mini story
- 0:38that captures the battle in all of our hearts as we go ahead in
- 0:43the things that we think that God has told us.
- 0:45But then when God communicates a new direction, we say, no, you
- 0:50can't possibly mean that because I'm stuck in this direction, I
- 0:53don't want to change. This is the way it ought to be,
- 0:55isn't it? And we hear poor old Peter as he
- 0:58has his whole life lived as a law abiding Jew and all of a
- 1:03sudden all those rules that were so important have been replaced
- 1:07by a new way where everyone is welcome at God's table.
- 1:11Poor dude takes a lot of convincing.
- 1:15And Yep, I think you and I are very similar and we can be
- 1:18equally stubborn and small minded.
- 1:22Oh, probably not fair to call Peter small minded, just a
- 1:24product of his training and his life.
- 1:28So here we are, our Holy Spirit, open up our hearts so that we
- 1:32can be nimble and responsive as we hear your word and it
- 1:37inspires us today. All right, friends, join me as
- 1:41we read together Acts Chapter 10.
- 1:54In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius,
- 1:58who was a captain of the Italian regiment.
- 2:01He was a devout, God fearing man, as was everyone in his
- 2:05household. He gave generously to the poor
- 2:08and prayed regularly to God. One afternoon about 3:00, he had
- 2:13a vision in which he saw an Angel of God coming toward him.
- 2:18Cornelius, the Angel said. Cornelius stared at him in
- 2:23terror. What is it, Sir?
- 2:25He asked the Angel, and the Angel replied, Your prayers and
- 2:30gifts to the poor have been received by God as an offering.
- 2:34Now send some men to Joppa and summon a man named Simon Peter.
- 2:39He is staying with Simon, a Tanner who lives near the
- 2:43seashore. As soon as the Angel was gone,
- 2:47Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout
- 2:51soldier, one of his personal attendants.
- 2:53He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa.
- 2:56The next day, as Cornelius's messengers were nearing the
- 2:59town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray.
- 3:03It was about noon and he was hungry, but while a meal was
- 3:07being prepared he fell into a trance.
- 3:10He saw the sky open and something like a large sheet was
- 3:14let down by its four corners. In the sheet were all sorts of
- 3:19animals, reptiles and birds. Then a voice said to him, Get
- 3:23up, Peter, kill and eat them. No, Lord, Peter declared.
- 3:29I've never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared
- 3:32impure and unclean. But the voice spoke again.
- 3:37Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.
- 3:41The same vision was repeated three times.
- 3:45Then the sheep was suddenly pulled up to heaven.
- 3:49Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean?
- 3:53Just then, the men sent by Cornelius found Simon's house
- 3:57standing outside the gate. They asked if a man named Simon
- 4:00Peter was staying there. Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling
- 4:04over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, Three men have come
- 4:09looking for you. Get up, go downstairs and go
- 4:12with them without hesitation. Don't worry for I have sent
- 4:16them. So Peter went down and said I'm
- 4:20the man you're looking for, why have you come?
- 4:23They said we were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer.
- 4:27He is a devout and God fearing man, well respected by all the
- 4:31Jews. A holy Angel instructed him to
- 4:34summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.
- 4:39So Peter invited the men to stay for the night.
- 4:42The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the
- 4:45brothers from Joppa. They arrived in Saeseria the
- 4:48following day. Cornelius was waiting for them
- 4:52and had called together his relatives and close friends.
- 4:55As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and
- 4:59worshipped him. But Peter pulled him up and said
- 5:02stand up, I'm a human being just like you.
- 5:06So they talked together and went inside, where many others were
- 5:10assembled. Peter told them.
- 5:12You know it is against our law for a Jewish man to enter a
- 5:17Gentile home like this, or to associate with you.
- 5:20But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone
- 5:25as unpure or unclean. So I came without objection as
- 5:29soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me,
- 5:34Cornelius replied. Four days ago I was praying in
- 5:38my house. About this same time, 3:00 in
- 5:41the afternoon, suddenly a man in dazzling clothes was standing in
- 5:46front of me. He told me, Cornelius, your
- 5:49prayer has been heard and your gifts to the poor have been
- 5:53noticed by God. Now send messages to Joppa and
- 5:57summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of
- 6:01Simon, a Tanner who lives near the seashore.
- 6:05So I send for you at once, and it was good of you to come.
- 6:08Now we are all here waiting before God to hear the message
- 6:12the Lord has given you. Then Peter replied.
- 6:17I see very clearly that God shows no favouritism in every
- 6:22nation. He accepts those who fear him
- 6:24and do what is right. This is the message of good news
- 6:28for the people of Israel, that there is peace with God through
- 6:33Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
- 6:36You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in
- 6:39Galilee after John began preaching his message of
- 6:42baptism. And you know that God anointed
- 6:45Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.
- 6:49Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were
- 6:53oppressed by the devil, for God was with him, and we apostles
- 6:57are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in
- 7:01Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging
- 7:04him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day.
- 7:10Then God allowed him to appear, not to the general public, but
- 7:14to us, whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses.
- 7:19We were those who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the
- 7:22dead, and He ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify
- 7:27that Jesus is the One appointed by God to be the Judge of all
- 7:31the living and the dead. He is the One all the prophets
- 7:36testified about, saying that everyone who believes in Him
- 7:40will have their sins forgiven through His name.
- 7:44Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell
- 7:48upon all who were listening to the message.
- 7:52The Jewish believers that came with Peter were amazed that the
- 7:56gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles too,
- 8:00for they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.
- 8:05Then Peter asked, can anyone object to their being baptised
- 8:10now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?
- 8:14So he gave orders for them to be baptised in the name of Jesus
- 8:18Christ. Afterward, Cornelius asked him
- 8:22to stay with them for several days.
- 8:34Ah, Lord, you throw open your arms wide, and you welcome all
- 8:38of us as your children and all of our preconceived notions
- 8:43about who should be in and who should be out and who is
- 8:46acceptable and who is unacceptable.
- 8:49They are out. They are old news.
- 8:51They are no longer relevant as you with your Father's heart,
- 8:57just welcome all of your children with this good news.
- 9:02This good news of saving grace for us through Jesus our Holy
- 9:08Spirit. Broaden our hearts and broaden
- 9:12our minds that we would love as you do.
- 9:15That we would include and reach out and embrace as you do so
- 9:21that when we come across those who we would imagine to be out
- 9:26or we would find difficult to love, that your expansive grace
- 9:32that knows no bounds would infect us as well.
- 9:38Oh Jesus, thank you that we wholly unacceptable and
- 9:42difficult and sinful and stubborn of heart.
- 9:46That we are loved and cherished and forgiven by you.
- 9:52We just revel in your acceptance and our membership in your
- 9:56family and are so grateful for you and your love for us.
- 10:00So we praise you and we thank you, and we pray all of these
- 10:04things in your redeeming name, Amen.
