Transcript
- 0:33I'm so drunk. Hello, and welcome to hamster
- 0:44with a blunt. Penknife planner.
- 0:47This is death in heaven part, 2 of Dark Water and I am Steven
- 0:54Alexander and I'm here with Joe Fort, and I cannot do an
- 0:58impersonation of Peter Capaldi. So I stopped halfway through.
- 1:01That was rather good, you know, I thought that was pretty good.
- 1:05It's just the way I say clutter. If you watch that, if you watch
- 1:11Doctor Who with Peter Capaldi, watch out for every time he
- 1:13says, hello, get really close to your mic.
- 1:20Every time. People's a I got a bit, you
- 1:23know, other people pay good money to hear you talk like
- 1:25that, you know, yeah, I'll set up my YouTube, was it?
- 1:29Hey, Smo obvious, like with a particular stood quietly.
- 1:33It's just you doing Peter Capaldi Impressions.
- 1:35Yeah, I'll have one subscriber. That's for sure.
- 1:39I have to be careful about Scottish accents.
- 1:42I remember I was on holiday with Simon in Scotland and we're
- 1:46doing as nice or driving holiday went all kinds of posts went to
- 1:49Aberdeen in finesse Edinburgh, you know, we had a really
- 1:53fantastic time, but we were in the car going.
- 1:57Okay? Hoots mon.
- 1:58Well, don't do that. But you get out of the car,
- 2:01whatever you do do not do that outside of the car.
- 2:05I did, you know, we were very careful.
- 2:09Did have to say, do it. So that before this year, the
- 2:13last commentary was Terror of the zygons, right?
- 2:16And I cannot believe that story starts with someone saying, oh,
- 2:21you know, we really could, you send over a few, we have gifts
- 2:24like a cliche in the book is to I'm sure you don't, you don't
- 2:31object or Regional doctor. Then I love original doctor.
- 2:35I am shocked that we have not like we have a whole Russell T
- 2:39Davies. Davis here, and there wasn't a
- 2:41Welsh doctor or proper. Companion was there.
- 2:45No, you're right. Yeah, that's that.
- 2:47That is a staggering efficient. Yes, unless you count Russell T,
- 2:51Davies as a doctor, which you could do.
- 2:53He's very well. I think we all are diver not
- 2:56going to go down this path, but I absolutely think, with the
- 3:00Advent of Joe Martin, especially we are ready for a person of
- 3:04color. Now, as the doctor like, let's
- 3:07do it. Jomo.
- 3:09Ted is electric and lights up the screen with her stunning
- 3:14Charisma. And I would have her as the
- 3:16doctor in the heartbeat. It feels like I iced it in one
- 3:20episode. It feels like a waste of such a
- 3:23great doctor. Yes, I would happily have them
- 3:27split it up and do two series a year.
- 3:29One with Joe Martin and one with Jodie Whittaker as two different
- 3:33doctors in two different series. As we look at all these ever
- 3:36bloody franchises like Star Wars where they're making.
- 3:39Drag shows and Marvel, you know, like what kind they did that
- 3:42with Doctor Who? No, it needs to be picked up by
- 3:44our Channel. Open it like a streaming service
- 3:47or something. Let's have the Danny pink and
- 3:50Clara spin-off. Yeah, where they exist in that
- 3:54in. Oh God.
- 3:56Where is it? They go in.
- 3:57Oh, no. I'm thinking of Last Christmas
- 3:59and it's not even real. It's not real.
- 4:00Danny is it? It's Cody comes back doesn't
- 4:04have forgotten that. Yeah, but you can tell it's not
- 4:05real Danny because he's really likable in that, you know, so
- 4:08sorry. So, we could into deaf in
- 4:13heaven, are we? Yeah, I think this episode
- 4:18divides opinion. I don't.
- 4:20Just mean, ask you say it, divides opinion.
- 4:25Have you met anyone who likes it?
- 4:27I think this episode is not very like so, and do you think this
- 4:34is an issue though? Do you think we have a lot of
- 4:37these end of Seasons? You the penultimate episode is a
- 4:41lot of promise and the phenomenon is a lot of
- 4:44disappointment. No, I have been phenomenally
- 4:50exciting like all the odds d1's as probably excited by part 2.
- 4:54Most of the Matt Smith ones are pretty Good.
- 4:57In both parts of the country dropped on my head and I really
- 5:02like the last journey to barter we had.
- 5:05But I'm not even going to go there.
- 5:06So, well, you like essential assignment and the Timeless
- 5:10children. Yes.
- 5:12There's a poll on Twitter at the moment.
- 5:15I think it's Harold of creation. It does this regular pole and
- 5:18essentially seidman times children is always on there and
- 5:21it's losing to like ones, like the rescue and the edge of
- 5:24Destruction. And you think Should he should
- 5:28score higher because it's in some way competent.
- 5:32You know, just like in terms of like I just had a bit money
- 5:35spent on it, you know, it's like those little facts that you just
- 5:38said that we may need to talk to you about Ascension assignment
- 5:41and Thomas children, you know, I feel like someone needs to do a
- 5:44commentary for that, that likes it.
- 5:46I feel that's a story that needs someone to Champion it, but on
- 5:52the other hand, I don't love death in heaven.
- 5:55Well, let's find out why you don't love death in heaven.
- 5:58Oh, oh, I got look forward foot too.
- 6:01My favorite character in talk to who you're being sarcastic,
- 6:05aren't you? Yes, Julie's, do the countdown,
- 6:11please Clara. I'm going to count us down in 5.
- 6:204, 3, 2, 1, go. It's really good at that sounds
- 6:26really would give me the sack eyebrows.
- 6:32Exotic be dying. Stop attacking me with your
- 6:34eyebrows section. Don't forget like man.
- 6:37We're getting a little pre titles.
- 6:39Like this is what happened last time and this is how cheerful
- 6:42Doctor Who was last week, rainbows and sunshine and fluffy
- 6:46clouds. Look pretty titles.
- 6:49Recaps are all very well. But you cannot beat a bunch of
- 6:53still photographs with a BBC announcer.
- 6:55Telling you what happened last week like you used to have an
- 6:58old Doctor Who that is the best thing ever.
- 7:01It's true. I agree.
- 7:03Mind you. I'll fate anything in classic.
- 7:05Who's Jimmy bail? So, you know, like, yeah, okay.
- 7:09We are having that scene in a minute, where she pretends to be
- 7:12the doctor have issues. I have issues.
- 7:16Okay. This is like, this is like
- 7:18you're on a roller coaster and all the bits of track and field
- 7:21enough, and it's just a constant car crash of stupid ideas.
- 7:25That should never have been allowed.
- 7:27I mean, the idea that she's pretending to be Doctor is, is I
- 7:35mean so terrible, but she's just so smog him.
- 7:41She wouldn't be a good doctor. She would not be a good dog.
- 7:44So she'd be like, she'd be a Moffat doctor.
- 7:46She'd be so upper own ass. Well, she's basically like River
- 7:51song, war or Missy but not what? But without that kind of charm,
- 7:56those two characters have. Anyway, what do you think of
- 8:00General as an actress? I think Jenna Coleman is a
- 8:03stunning actress and I have seen her do work away from Doctor Who
- 8:07that has impressed me a lot. I feel exactly the same about
- 8:10Matt Smith. I think Matt Smith in the crown
- 8:13is is fantastic and Jenna Coleman in Victoria.
- 8:16Yeah. Yeah, brilliant.
- 8:19It's a writing it's the writing they get here.
- 8:21It's saps, their performances. Nobody sells naturalistic with
- 8:25this smug, knowing Steven Moffat dial, or coming out of their
- 8:29mouths. Yeah, and you mentioned Fear in
- 8:32the previous episode and I lay Buffy for all of this shit
- 8:37because Buffy like that guy who shall not be named because he's
- 8:42awful used to write dialogue for makes it like I used to get sfx
- 8:46magazine regular, they raved about the dialogue because it
- 8:49was also like SAS pop culture references and all this kind of
- 8:52stuff and it's spilt out into every other TV series.
- 8:57And by this point, it's just absolutely interminable and
- 9:01We're all sick of it because you have to be clever to write that
- 9:05kind of stuff. You can't always get it, right?
- 9:08And yeah, that's just awful. But like do you think that was
- 9:11it? I don't think that was an issue,
- 9:12Rusty Davis. And I think he did Drop Pop
- 9:14Culture references, but what you can do it, where he knew what
- 9:17the right kind of Pop Culture references, drop.
- 9:20I think I guess but I've gone, absolutely love it.
- 9:26So nowhere near Saint, Paul's Cathedral.
- 9:28It's like if you look over here, Told it was he drunk - thanks
- 9:35Steve. I wouldn't have known that until
- 9:36you pointed out. If you've ever been to supposed
- 9:40to assure, you will know that. It looks nothing like oh here
- 9:42she comes. Here.
- 9:44She comes. Oh my word.
- 9:47So I've been asked to ask you about Kate Stewart.
- 9:51Kate lethbridge-stewart the single flattest performance in
- 9:56the whole of Doctor Who she is an absolute Charisma black hole.
- 10:01All praise the energy out of every scene.
- 10:05She is. I like Jemma.
- 10:07Redgrave is probably really good in lots of other TV shows.
- 10:11She's in. But someone like my, I may be in
- 10:14a first episode. She was like playing it to
- 10:16Hunter was a take it down a bit. Okay, take it down a bit, take
- 10:19it down a bit. I should just get going and she
- 10:23like, she just goes further and further and further.
- 10:25Absolutely. What disaster, you know, I hate
- 10:27right. She either every time she
- 10:30appears she announces her. You guys, I'm who that is.
- 10:33So she like, I've never known anyone who every time they are
- 10:36on the scene. They're like, I'm Kate Stewart
- 10:38and I'm in charge of unit. But either that or she just
- 10:42talks in pure. Exposition.
- 10:43I don't think there's any point where we learn anything about
- 10:46her asshole as a person. No.
- 10:49No, what do we know about, Kate, Bush, with Toby.
- 10:51Tell me one thing about you. Woah, she's the brigadier's
- 10:54daughter because she tells me that all the time.
- 10:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:57She's in charge of unit because she tells me that all the time.
- 11:02But beyond her work, I have no idea.
- 11:04Yeah. Well I and don't forget.
- 11:06She says about. Oh, I'm in charge of units.
- 11:09Oh dear. It's got that real kind of like,
- 11:14it's like that. It's like a monitor, isn't it?
- 11:16She could be a Cyberman. Yes, especially when she's on
- 11:24screen with Michelle Gomez, who is full of character, full of
- 11:28Charisma, exactly one of those electric.
- 11:31Two lights up the screen and how do they do that?
- 11:37Anyway, we've got as good as well.
- 11:40Who's this time dress? Sorry.
- 11:43I my energy is being sucked up by Kate lethbridge-stewart.
- 11:45I don't know what I'd rather like Osgood because I do like
- 11:51the performance of. I felt sure what that woman's
- 11:54name is. Do you have the list there in
- 11:55front of you? Oh, okay helpful.
- 11:59I think she gives a nice performance.
- 12:00But like the whole kind of like fan and girl thing.
- 12:04It's very well either. I have a theory about theory.
- 12:10Is that what Steven Moffat despises Doctor Who fans?
- 12:14Oh, go on, did tests them, and you see this in Osgood and you
- 12:20see this in a couple of other things, such as Chris Addison's,
- 12:23later squee moment in the, he thinks that they're in some way,
- 12:30like, like having a TV shows your main thing and doing
- 12:35podcasts about it makes you in some way.
- 12:37A less of a person, right? And I think that comes across
- 12:42quite heavily. And there are, I mean, there are
- 12:46people who who don't have such strong personalities, and, you
- 12:52know, and have a strong emotional connection to the TV
- 12:55show, but they those people should be celebrated and not
- 13:00mocked in the way that they are. Mocked through all the good and,
- 13:04like, going back to Rusty Davis again.
- 13:07He absolutely celebrated Doctor Who fans in love monsters that a
- 13:11they are Doctor Who fans in that?
- 13:13Yes, and there were small community that comes together.
- 13:16That, that just happen to love the doctor, you know.
- 13:20Yeah, I'll be like the difference in of monsters is
- 13:22like in Doctor Who fans usual thing.
- 13:24Is you meet up and you'll go out and get pissed together and they
- 13:28did lots of nice things like playing guitar and doing cooking
- 13:30clubs, but it normally. Yeah.
- 13:32My experience was Doctor Who fans get together.
- 13:35They will shag each other. But yeah.
- 13:38I suppose this is the strip, the floods.
- 14:07Which I still think is one of the best Doc's Who comic strips?
- 14:11It's I think like eight or nine. Is it telepaths?
- 14:13It's long. Yeah, and it has the concept in
- 14:17it. Doesn't it that it rains?
- 14:20Does it rain emotions? What rate it rains?
- 14:23It makes people feel emotions. If you're so many emotions, they
- 14:26can't stand it and they are vague.
- 14:29They beg to be turned into Cybermen.
- 14:31Exactly. Yeah, which is much cleverer
- 14:34than this. Okay, so the here is Terrific
- 14:37idea. Number two.
- 14:39Yeah, Steve another 1400 office is a nice smart idea to have
- 14:43Lain anime. Every corpse on the earth and
- 14:47have them turn into Cybermen and come out of grades.
- 14:51It's like it's just unacceptable.
- 14:54And if someone had pitched I like imagine if someone who
- 14:56pitched it to Steven, Moffat, in a meeting, what do you think?
- 14:59You just, you just said, no, that's horrible.
- 15:02They're like, oh, is this would be an absolute no-go in Rusty
- 15:05Davis, yellow. He just would not This.
- 15:08Yeah. So in this, in this scene here,
- 15:11right? Okay.
- 15:11So, you got Danny pink lying on the slab.
- 15:13He's very cold course. It's cold in the mortuary.
- 15:16But somewhere in this. See, there's a piece of paper
- 15:18and rear not it. In other words, known as Danny
- 15:22pink is there. So, watch out for it in a
- 15:25moment. So, what's his real name?
- 15:29Why has somebody written known as Danny pink on an official?
- 15:33Watery slab piece of paper. I know.
- 15:37I know what his real name is. Yeah, it's going to be something
- 15:41really tree reason. It like Goldsmith.
- 15:44Also me don't think it's that baby as well.
- 15:50Isn't it? You wouldn't choose like Danny
- 15:52pink. Like I want to say again like
- 15:59the direction is really good and there is a genuine sense of
- 16:02horror in what's happening like the the sidemen coming out.
- 16:07Graves him, you know getting up off a mortuary slab.
- 16:12Yes, well done and it teaches an absolutely phenomenal episode
- 16:16where it happens. On a much smaller scale, where
- 16:20you've got sidemen, be something creepy going on in a watery or
- 16:25in a graveyard and they're just doing it as a test and they will
- 16:28roll it out to the whole world. And it's just like having to
- 16:32like a few people but because it happens to everyone on the
- 16:35planet, I think. Ruins it.
- 16:38You don't have that kind of, that kind of creepiness.
- 16:41I think you could have salvaged the episode if that was the
- 16:44case. It was that one graveyard and
- 16:46it's still not nice that people's relatives are, you
- 16:48know, climbing out of their graves?
- 16:51Look how good this looks. The he around and around the
- 16:54plane like this. This is this is Step from a
- 16:56movie is and it's so clever. The use of the budget the
- 17:03resources, but Stephen buffer has many many.
- 17:07Arms that uses time of the game and one of the oldest one is
- 17:10playing because he's always doing something odd with planes.
- 17:14So they've got planes in Terror of the zygons and is
- 17:18aggravation. I think this is the same plane.
- 17:19Anyway, you got the planes in Fells of Sir John.
- 17:25Yeah, you've got the bit in the Dalek to part.
- 17:29So we're missing stops all the planes and it's just like like
- 17:34there are a lot of planes and it's maybe the compel me.
- 17:37You know, it gets playing this as well.
- 17:38So I mean, I don't mind things set on the plane and I'm not
- 17:41gonna lie. I think the sequence in a minute
- 17:43where the Cybermen attack it like flyers.
- 17:45It is pretty Dynamic lead. Um, yeah, I love they got a guy,
- 17:50you think got this wonderful fabulous, actor, Sanjeev Bhaskar
- 17:54and they got a while to deliver two lines and fall out of a
- 17:57window. I think that's.
- 17:58That's really awful. Yeah, but that's another Trope
- 18:01of this era wasting fantastic guests.
- 18:04That gets performances probability.
- 18:07He was intoxicated you've ever built by anything is dr.
- 18:09Do what I do but I think it's not a memorable part.
- 18:13Remember Olivia Colman being in Doctor Who and that Crosby?
- 18:18Yeah, they deserve whole episodes themselves did make
- 18:20both of them. Okay.
- 18:22I like I need you to explain this to me, right?
- 18:24Because I do understand this at all.
- 18:26The doctor is told here that he is the president of the entire
- 18:31Earth. Okay?
- 18:33Yeah. And in control of all of the
- 18:35armies on the earth. Now, you tell me in In any way,
- 18:37shape, or form. If that would ever happen.
- 18:40All the armies on the earth, have agreed to put their power
- 18:44in the hands of an alien being from outer space.
- 18:48Well, it's fine because he doesn't utilize that power and
- 18:52has no impact on the plot whatsoever.
- 18:54It's just a bit crap. It's again.
- 18:59It's like he's got all these ideas that if he developed a
- 19:03single one of them didn't properly, it would be amazing.
- 19:07And I think like sometimes you praise that somebody pays out
- 19:10with Douglas Adams or someone who can throw in four million
- 19:13ideas, and they're all brilliant, and they all change
- 19:15the way you think about everything and it's great and
- 19:19this time we're throwing in loads of ideas just to keep the
- 19:22story going, but we've Douglas Adams, it's lots of different
- 19:26ideas and they're like, Puzzle pieces that come together to
- 19:29form a perfect hole with Steven Moffat.
- 19:32It's like lots of little puzzle pieces.
- 19:34Yeah, the belong to 900, different puzzles that are never
- 19:39going to make a whole but they come together as for the Harry
- 19:42Hole. I'll make him pop them.
- 19:44What do you do not want to explore that?
- 19:47I did not expect to hear you saying that mr.
- 19:50Stevens. Well, seeing as were at the
- 19:53rock, bottom of the muffler here.
- 19:55After I go to the rock bottom of taste as well.
- 19:57That's where we are. Did you hear that bit there?
- 19:59Where where Clara was literally regurgitating?
- 20:02The doctors whole past like it in really fast dialogue but
- 20:07being super smart about it. That's why she'd be like as the
- 20:10doctor. It's very clever.
- 20:12And for all, look at those explosions.
- 20:14God. They're amazing.
- 20:17Yeah, she would not have made a good doctor.
- 20:19And what I like it's a nice little tease, but it just
- 20:25doesn't make any sense. That bit of paper.
- 20:28You just tell me about and that's obviously was yet, so
- 20:30it's known as done. He's holding it in his hands to
- 20:33remind himself who he was Stephen.
- 20:34Okay, so I'm going to have some pretty critical things to say
- 20:38about the last 20 minutes of this episode.
- 20:40There's see you in a minute where she kills those good.
- 20:44He's brilliant. Yes.
- 20:48It is. A brilliant.
- 20:49See. Oh, I know what you're going to
- 20:51say. Go on and later on.
- 20:53We'll talk about what the problem with it is and what I
- 20:56think the problem with It is because it upset a lot of
- 20:59people. Okay, I'm interested now because
- 21:03I don't think I know what you're gonna say, Okay, um, comparably
- 21:07talking to Michelle. Gomez is just wonderful
- 21:10listener. They think you can get rid of
- 21:13everyone else. Just have them talk for an hour
- 21:15about stuff. Isn't it?
- 21:17True? Yeah.
- 21:18That initially the Steven Moffat was going to bow out with the
- 21:21husbands of River Song and children, as they were should
- 21:25have started with series 10, I believe.
- 21:27That's true. And the chip no wasn't ready
- 21:30because he was doing the last series of Broadchurch.
- 21:32So he said, okay, I'll do another season and then he
- 21:36wasn't going to do the Christmas special.
- 21:37So I said, all right, I'll do the Christmas special.
- 21:40Yeah, I think the decision in series 10 to make it about
- 21:44Capaldi and Gomez's relationship was a masterstroke.
- 21:50Yes, you've got two amazing assets.
- 21:53You got two actors who love doing it and let's just go for
- 21:56it. And I'll also, you've got like a
- 22:00million miles. The best.
- 22:01Companion is Bill. She is amazing.
- 22:05The best. Did you say?
- 22:07Oh, yeah, for sure. Yeah.
- 22:18Let's OHS. I was going to say earlier
- 22:19because Jenna Coleman is like Liz, sladen, because Sarah Jane
- 22:24Smith is not a particularly well-written character by.
- 22:27Elisabeth sladen, brings it to life and but Clara is a look
- 22:32poorly written character. And Jenna works very hard to
- 22:35almost from hurting but the fact that she salvages as many
- 22:39moments she does. And there are some terrific
- 22:41Clara moments like in Flatline. I think the end of killed the
- 22:45moon where she goes at the doctor.
- 22:47She acts that just superbly. Yeah.
- 22:51We've got this whole Splinter of time thing hanging over her.
- 22:54So it's kind of like How God cakes on screen.
- 23:00You said earlier about Buffy? Yeah, having a strong influence
- 23:04on Doctor Who? Yeah, we're about to have a
- 23:0820-minute seen in a graveyard. That's very funny, isn't it?
- 23:14Yeah. This is what else?
- 23:17Something else picked up. He's going on.
- 23:19Why are the seidman running around the graveyard scaring
- 23:22Clara? What, how does this make any
- 23:24sense? I mean, it's a creeper.
- 23:26I hate this. Also, they clearly film this in
- 23:29the day, having a a slap to filter over it.
- 23:32I love day for night. What would the old ITC series?
- 23:35Like the persuaders, The Prisoner be without day for
- 23:38night in a sound. He warms the cockles of my heart
- 23:41for Talia in a mini right? When the Simon men come out.
- 23:45Yeah. Do you remember the end of mind
- 23:47or where the, for us? Alphonse?
- 23:50I like dancing around the seidman, start doing that.
- 23:54They're sort of going, it's real.
- 24:01One of my story is it is age of Steel rise in the seidman.
- 24:07Yeah. It's just a bit of the end of
- 24:08that where they try to escape from Battersea power station and
- 24:12the open up the door and there's loads of farm.
- 24:14There's all this. I've been dancing about my dad.
- 24:23We could criticize the steel and I'd say so.
- 24:27Or even this, it's I, it's one of the best.
- 24:31I think, hey, this is States like in terms of direction as
- 24:34well for a market, correction of that.
- 24:37Yeah, you got to love him as he says, lots of space, lots of
- 24:40energy. So what he does, so, what's
- 24:43occurring now? They're, they're talking about
- 24:45the sidemen coming out the graves.
- 24:47Well, I think Kate lethbridge-stewart is talking.
- 24:50I'm trying to stay awake because he's just got up and he said,
- 24:53five coffees. He's working hard.
- 24:55It's just not, it's just not doing it.
- 24:57Got to keep talking. So Kate called toward Jesus -
- 25:00picture of the Brigadier on the wall.
- 25:14So talk to me about to finish, please.
- 25:16Okay? No, I haven't.
- 25:19Well, why what's so good about them?
- 25:21Well, so I follow a review as called he's named style and he
- 25:26writes, big finish reviews and he's one of the few people out
- 25:28there, the rice genuinely honest reviews, and he basically says
- 25:32that her performance is some ambulance sztyc in those boxes.
- 25:37So he's in complete agreement with you.
- 25:41I mean, I've got nothing. Respect for her, but somebody's
- 25:45told her to just play it down and it does not work.
- 25:49Not when you are supposed to be the daughter of one of the
- 25:53quirkiest, and sparkling characters Doctor Who's ever had
- 25:58in the Brigadier, because he does so much with.
- 26:03So I'm just hoping it up there. He does so much with like, again
- 26:07with relatively little and he brings so much character to it,
- 26:10and I'm the kind of knowing weeks the doctors.
- 26:13Better even in the mind of evil, whether it's really violent and
- 26:17stuff. He's brilliant and I like see so
- 26:20you're saying you can't believe that his daughter because she
- 26:22hasn't got any kind of Sparkle that he had.
- 26:25No, I can't believe that she's Doris's daughter.
- 26:28I mean if she was pretty dull when she yeah, I think I think
- 26:33she might not. I think there might have been
- 26:35something going on there. And Doris might infer Hudson,
- 26:38quiet evenings with some man friends while Brigadier was away
- 26:41and he's got out of control. I was a big house, you know, he
- 26:45could have been at one end. She could have been at the
- 26:47other. I know you're big house, huge
- 26:49garden. And the couple has the
- 26:53assignment coming out their grave, right?
- 26:55I'm just going back to something I said in the last episode and I
- 26:57know I realize I've got a little serious, but I'm going to kind
- 26:59of get a little serious again. Okay, in order for me to buy
- 27:03into the facts that the Cybermen are, you know, the remains of
- 27:06people that have been buried stepping out their graves.
- 27:10The other halfs grandmother died last year and she was very so am
- 27:13I supposed to Except that she crawled out of her grave in
- 27:17Belgium. And, and at the end of this
- 27:19story is that blown up? Something.
- 27:24So, it's the memory. So the memories are uploaded
- 27:29into the nethersphere and then their re-downloaded wired the
- 27:33paalam. That populates the entire
- 27:35planet. The pollen in the water.
- 27:40No, it doesn't make any sense. And also like I know you can't
- 27:44criticize science and Doctor Who because it's all sort of like
- 27:46magic anyway, yeah. Where does all the metal come
- 27:49from? Where does all the metal come
- 27:52from? It's like the rain somewhere.
- 27:55Yeah, but the handles of the coffins into Cybermen.
- 28:00I mean, I mean, he's taking like we said before he faking that
- 28:03extreme idea that the assignment of The Walking Dead 22 is
- 28:07absolute extreme, but it's just like logically creatively.
- 28:13It's just kind of like, bereft of sense.
- 28:16Is he? I think a single survivor man in
- 28:21a graveyard at night chasing the doctrine, their companion
- 28:25around, and maybe killing off a couple of extras would be
- 28:29fabulous, Doctor Who? Yeah, what happens?
- 28:31Here is bollocks. Well, I mean, did you like the
- 28:34sidemen in the graveyard in the next stop?
- 28:36So when it was all snowy? Yeah.
- 28:38That was all. That was such a such a fantastic
- 28:40image. I like what I like.
- 28:43I remember not liking the next Doctor, then I watched it again,
- 28:45recently. It was like, It was really good.
- 28:51I'm not gonna lie to you. I rate it dark water and ate
- 28:55when I recently reviewed it when it came out and death in heaven
- 28:57is 7. So, I went back into this
- 28:59knowing we were going to do this commentary and I was like, a,
- 29:02what I'm gonna Really Gonna like this, you know, and then, you
- 29:07know, I was quite horrified at what I watched.
- 29:11Sometimes. The memory does cheat I was it's
- 29:17always telling when you get an interview with the director who
- 29:20says I was handed the script for part one.
- 29:24We did receive the script for part 2 until very late in the
- 29:26day. Is that what happened here?
- 29:31So I think this is I think a lot of doctor is born out of
- 29:35desperation. Yeah, but this is really like
- 29:40bad. Desperation midnight was done
- 29:43like in a weekend. It was written like Like in a
- 29:45couple of days, like, yeah, really and city of death was as
- 29:49well. Really good doctor.
- 29:50Who can be done like in a panic, you know, I think what that does
- 29:56it with listen as well, which I think is still very good and
- 29:59that's a panic. We haven't got any set or budget
- 30:01or time. Let's just do something cool and
- 30:05it works for, it's always good to just thought I'd yeah, sorry.
- 30:07I talked to all over that scene and I really like it, and it's
- 30:12missing is so unpredictable. Yeah, yes.
- 30:16It's a great thing for missing. Its it really brings her to life
- 30:21and she's evil, you know, she's an absolute terrifying.
- 30:24Monster, who will kill you if she gets the chance?
- 30:29And she's turned the tables and everyone and the planes about to
- 30:31crash. Why are they on the plane?
- 30:33Why why no, I did what because of this set piece.
- 30:37They want to do in a minute, none.
- 30:48I hope so.
- 31:02This is the sort of dynamic set piece.
- 31:06But Action Center, he's the Doctor Who commands these days
- 31:09like I'm all for this. Yeah.
- 31:12Yeah. Yeah, it's great.
- 31:13Yeah, besides men attacking you. Do we care of its like Iron Man?
- 31:18Not really? No.
- 31:20I think this is a this is actually very Marvel.
- 31:23This this episode. You've got the doctor as the
- 31:25president of Earth. You've got the?
- 31:28Yeah, the side meditation. That is Missy.
- 31:30It's definitely influenced by that, right?
- 31:32Okay. So this is what bugs me because
- 31:37the fact that she killed Osgood should drive the dr.
- 31:44Wilde. He's should be Beyond Furious
- 31:46and we've seen. He could be angry about all
- 31:49kinds of things, but that should be like the triggered.
- 31:52Say I'm not taking any more of your shit and I am gonna do
- 31:57whatever is necessary. But what mafa has compelled
- 32:01these doctors doing a heck of a lot is sort of like impotently
- 32:05running out. We going.
- 32:06Oh, oh, oh and not delivering all his rage.
- 32:11Not having a plan. Not being the - Center of
- 32:16action, he doesn't have agencies.
- 32:18He's always on the back foot. And I think that's one of the
- 32:22things he gets wrong about having compelled as the doctor
- 32:26because he's an actor who can turn it up and command
- 32:30instantly, but as soon as you have not doing anything and just
- 32:33going up which he does a lot, it ruins it.
- 32:37The one time like the one time he did do it was in heaven said
- 32:40wasn't it? And look at y'all Capaldi Rose
- 32:42for that challenge. That I face that one man show.
- 32:45Of anger grief. Yeah, right.
- 32:48Yeah about twice a season. He gets the material like in a
- 32:54single scene. He gets the material worthy of
- 32:57him as a doctor. Like oh, yeah.
- 33:00He's an actor. That can pretty much do anything
- 33:03and half the time he's cracking like crap jokes and you know,
- 33:08it's it isn't good enough. That's what I'm saying.
- 33:12He's not as well, served as he should have been by his.
- 33:15The Doctor, Who Am I? The other thing about, what's
- 33:18good for weekends? Danny pink, is that nobody cares
- 33:22that she dies? And that is why it's wrong.
- 33:26That should be a big turning point for the story.
- 33:30People should be outraged about that but has no impact on the
- 33:33plot. What I think, I think Mafia
- 33:35things where more invested in Danny pink because there's a lot
- 33:39of emphasis on Danny pink, being a Cyberman and having to commit
- 33:42suicide and all that. Where's your right?
- 33:44That? The genuinely likable character
- 33:46that has just died his brush to sublet.
- 33:51There's a third thing. Hang on.
- 33:52There's a third thing about this is we set off mic but not on
- 33:56Mike and that is Oscars back next year with no explanation
- 34:01whatsoever. It will be not be as I got off
- 34:07to be exact to death. Again, Moffat wrote people don't
- 34:11stay dead. And but when it reaches the
- 34:15point of whatever you're alive again, no explanation, you know,
- 34:19like why should we care about anything?
- 34:21Exactly. And that was my issue.
- 34:23I'd never really felt like anyone was in danger when he
- 34:27says that shut up. Yes.
- 34:33Let me see. He's not saying enough.
- 34:35He should be taking the charge here and he's just like letting
- 34:39I mean, itís great to have Michelle Gomez showboating, but
- 34:42he should turn the tables at this point in my view where
- 34:45we're heading towards the most spectacularly dim twist ever.
- 34:51Oh no! Wait, but before we get there,
- 34:53we have to deal with this. This thing about that, she was
- 34:57the woman that connected them. You know, it's connected.
- 35:01The phone call. Why was that exactly?
- 35:03Ali. I'm just going to run outside.
- 35:11Now, look, shocked. I know my don't.
- 35:14She says why she says? Because she's a control freak
- 35:17and you're the one person who doesn't like being controlled
- 35:20what? I think, I think it's also a
- 35:23huge mistake, having a clip of the previous doctor in your
- 35:26season finale because like you've got to focus on the
- 35:30doctor, that's now, I'm even having a clip of Matt's.
- 35:33It takes away from your current doctor.
- 35:37That's a real. You had a clip of Matt Smith in
- 35:39your season opener as well. Yeah.
- 35:42Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:43It's like I remember Matt Smith. Yeah.
- 35:47Where we should be loving the new doctor.
- 35:49Well, I feel that the same thing happens in the girl, who died
- 35:53next year, where there's a clip of Donna, in a car episode and
- 35:57you're like, well, should we be focusing on Clara?
- 35:59Because Donna was amazing. Well, I was thinking about Don
- 36:04all the way through this season, so whatever.
- 36:07So, okay. So anyone can find the doctor as
- 36:11well on the phone. She's always nice.
- 36:14Yeah, I guess I can kind of go with that though.
- 36:17Like, that's fine. Yeah, River, Martha.
- 36:19She bring it in back to Earth. Yeah, that was where the free
- 36:26must stop. Carrying wasn't it?
- 36:30Okay. So what do you think about?
- 36:33What do you think about Danny? Cyberman?
- 36:36It's all for, and it's awful for so many reasons.
- 36:38One. He's already been tortured
- 36:40beyond belief as a character. Yeah, but like you said to me,
- 36:47you know, yes, Doctor Who can go into these Bleak areas.
- 36:49Yeah, as long as like, hope is regained at the end.
- 36:54You're at the end of this story. First of all, Clara killed him
- 36:57by turning off his emotions. Then he commits suicide.
- 37:01Yeah, then every single corpse on planet Earth blows up.
- 37:06Yeah, and then the doctor and Clara lie to each other and
- 37:11pretend that they're happy when they're really miserable and
- 37:14that's the end of the episode. Yes, we do.
- 37:20Like if you ever happen to see an interview with Alfred
- 37:25Hitchcock, he always talks about.
- 37:27You have got it. You can't the tension.
- 37:28You've got to have the release. Yeah, you know.
- 37:30So you could have the build-up and the same should blend.
- 37:33You got to have the release, which is why you get moments of
- 37:35Comedy or or like in the John Glenn directed Bond films, you
- 37:40get all the tension building up and then you get a pigeon
- 37:43blinking at Got the light coming out of the ground in Venice.
- 37:50I love that so much, but you don't get the release here.
- 37:53You don't get the emotional release.
- 37:55Even lets you escape the tragedy.
- 37:58What are we watching? Moonraker?
- 37:59Instead? Watch me Reagan through times
- 38:05like this. It's okay to scream when she
- 38:09pulls out the airplane. It's amazing.
- 38:11Is it is How can you scream flatly?
- 38:17Can you scream without emotion? I don't know.
- 38:20It's a miracle. You are terrible.
- 38:22I love y'all, but I will give every actor on the show, the
- 38:29benefit of the doubt. And I will give every script,
- 38:31the benefit of Doubt except her what a disaster, and I think the
- 38:38writing's not there either. So, between the rice and the
- 38:41performance, it is just a bit. In resolution where she found
- 38:46unit and they were like, oh, yeah.
- 38:48Sorry. There's no more funding because
- 38:50of brexit units. Gone.
- 38:51I was like, yes, yes, but chip null invented, countless
- 38:59registered, didn't he? Because the first story she's in
- 39:01is the power of three is that? That's right.
- 39:04Yeah it is. Yeah, so it's actually in a
- 39:07chipmunk story. So who is the Chris Anderson
- 39:10character? What is he?
- 39:13What is he doing? There he is.
- 39:15Chris Addison, appearing. In an episode of Doctor Who that
- 39:18is. That's these purpose.
- 39:20He's an AI interface. Okay, so why is he excited about
- 39:25doctor? The doctor?
- 39:28Saving himself. I have the answer for you.
- 39:31Yeah, because Muffet likes to write all of this characters as
- 39:34complete smug bastards. And so somehow the tortoise has
- 39:43managed to fall faster than Peter Capaldi.
- 39:46Yeah. I mean, I mean, I'm not going to
- 39:49like the idea of the the door being ripped off the plane and
- 39:53falling into snake. It's exciting, right?
- 39:57I'll tell you what if Peter Capaldi of hit the ground now,
- 40:00we'd have had Jodie Whittaker early.
- 40:03Hey, hang on. Does he do this in heaven?
- 40:06Sent doesn T jump off of something into the Tardis in
- 40:09that as well. Yes, but I think that just
- 40:14something that happens in Doctor Who a lot these days.
- 40:16Okay, because you've got David Tennant, jumping off the
- 40:20spaceship in end of time and falling through the glass and I
- 40:24just got a job on his face. Steven look, look at her side
- 40:28when they're doing the 4000 thing.
- 40:30Like I think we're supposed to be super invested in Clara and
- 40:35Danny at this point. Like I said to you about how
- 40:44Bleak the ending is, and how depressing it is, and how the
- 40:47own the doctor and Clara won't comfort each other, even though
- 40:49terrible things have happened to them.
- 40:52Thank fuck for the after the credits sequence, where Santa
- 40:55knocks on the door and says no no, no, it's not going to end
- 40:58like this like it's almost like Moffat criticizing his own
- 41:02scripts. I think differently, but we'll
- 41:06get there. I'll get there.
- 41:08I think we'll talk. About the time, the straight, a
- 41:10bit of intrigue. Keep you for listening because
- 41:12if it's just us complaining but it's so exciting for everyone
- 41:16but I think I think these are valid complaints.
- 41:18I think these are complaints, are shared by a lot of people.
- 41:22Yeah. So people who don't know
- 41:25anything about writing stories, will talk about rising action.
- 41:29So they all say you've got to have a build up, things have got
- 41:32to like the actions got to get more.
- 41:34So if you got like you start off with a small action sequence,
- 41:37then you have like A downward bit, and then you have a larger
- 41:40action sequence, any other down with bit within the talk and
- 41:43recover, and then you finish off with your big action sequence,
- 41:47but we just had the big action sequence.
- 41:49We've just had the doctor falling out of a plane but the
- 41:53action pacing in this episode is like the structure of it doesn't
- 41:59feel one. Oh, yeah.
- 42:02And John Doherty was talking about this about how people
- 42:07don't know that they know. How stories work they do.
- 42:10They know how stories work. They know the pacing.
- 42:12They must have a structure, it should be.
- 42:15But the structure with this one is wrong because all that
- 42:19happened to the rest of the episodes.
- 42:20They just chat. Well, do you know?
- 42:23Okay, so I'm going to point you in the direction of midnight
- 42:26now, yeah. Yeah, which it all takes place
- 42:30in one location with a group of characters yet.
- 42:33And there is no action in it whatsoever.
- 42:35Yeah. Yeah, and it is master.
- 42:38You paste like this sense, the twists, the developments.
- 42:44You're right. Where is this, which has loads
- 42:47of money and, and big-budget action sequences.
- 42:50It is all over the shop. Yeah.
- 42:53We never know where we are. Whereas again, no action signal
- 42:58real action. Secret actually midnight at all
- 43:00apart from the doctor, being dragged out of the ship.
- 43:06But because you got that tension.
- 43:07Building up, building up and you Little releases and you know the
- 43:10funny bits and the bit where you know, it was still get the crew
- 43:15out front, get killed and you can't go through the front door
- 43:17anymore and everything gets Tighter and Tighter.
- 43:20And the build-up with the width as the talking gets closer.
- 43:25And then eventually overtake to the doctor says, she's saying
- 43:27the words first, love that accent, and it's all done
- 43:30without any action. There's like, there's, there's
- 43:32dynamism in the writing and the performances, but the was Zero
- 43:36action whatsoever. Yeah, and the trout as well,
- 43:40it's always nice to have a cloud signal board.
- 43:42Did you know I really really crawl now, but I cared about any
- 43:46one of those one shot characters in Midnight more than I care
- 43:50about Danny pink. I just can't Rouse any interest
- 43:53for him. If you can identify, what
- 43:57Russell T, Davies does to make you care about characters, and
- 44:01then we're able to use that then, well, then you would be,
- 44:06that's why the Steven Moffat episodes in Rusty, Davis's time
- 44:10are so good. I own I genuinely think sinus
- 44:14and library for us as a dead Doctor dances and empty child
- 44:20going to fly. I just think they're really good
- 44:21because you've got moffatt's gift for storytelling.
- 44:24And he's gift for ideas. I'm Rusty Davis is gift for
- 44:28characterization like blending. Like, it's a fusion, is
- 44:32beautiful. I, I think that Russell, T
- 44:37Davies, right? Least 50% of all the scripts in
- 44:41his era of apart, from Steven Moffat.
- 44:45I don't think he does very much them at all.
- 44:48If anything, what he said that because of status, but also, I
- 44:53think I think not, Is writing for the rusty, Davis era.
- 44:57So there is a certain formula and it is sort of character
- 45:00first. Yeah, where is he traverses?
- 45:03Yeah, but this is not a fairytale stuff.
- 45:06It's kind of let off the leash. You can do what you want, isn't
- 45:09it? It's also the pressure of having
- 45:13to produce all these episodes every year and come up with new
- 45:17ideas, all the time. Which yeah, you get burnt out,
- 45:22like, nobody could do it. Eric say, words had Some really
- 45:25good stuff early on, but you can't.
- 45:28It's so hard to keep that going to say right now.
- 45:31We've done that. Now we're going to do this,
- 45:33particularly if your conception of Doctor Who is different from
- 45:37what works, best for the show in the same breath.
- 45:40He was juggling two shows. Wasn't he was juggling.
- 45:43Yes, and Sherlock and like naturally.
- 45:47Yeah, if you're pouring all of your effort and all of your
- 45:50talent into Bunch. Oh, yeah, and it's all going to
- 45:52be in that. But if you're pouring all of
- 45:54your Until into two different shows, then it's going to be
- 45:58diluted. Yeah, and Sherlock should have
- 46:02been a lot easier to write because all you have to do is do
- 46:06a mystery and make it update it a bit and make it more to do a
- 46:09modern Twist on it. And the best episodes of
- 46:12Sherlock in the ones where they do that.
- 46:13And you had like the one with the taxi driver who's killing
- 46:16blow. Yeah.
- 46:17It's with series for, it's all blank.
- 46:29Compared to pretty much any way else already - what do you think
- 46:35about Missy giving the doctorate Army?
- 46:38Because that's what he does. That makes, I'm sorry.
- 46:41I'm going to continue to stream of negativity.
- 46:44No sense whatsoever. It means she fundamentally
- 46:47misunderstands the character of a man that she professes to
- 46:51love. Yes.
- 46:53He was showing so in this season.
- 46:55Yeah, you've got a fantastic idea of people dying.
- 46:59Into this mysterious place where this woman, greets them, and
- 47:03that kind of builds up throughout the season to lead to
- 47:06this. The she was going to create a
- 47:08Cyberman Army for the doctor to what take on the evils of the
- 47:12universe. Shit is just shit.
- 47:19Like, do you think that they're in any way, there's a
- 47:22possibility that more fat had this ending in mind when he was
- 47:26writing the missing scenes earlier on, I think This year.
- 47:30Yes. I think this is really, was
- 47:31going. Well, mind, you didn't you say
- 47:33this was a last-minute script. They didn't have, they didn't
- 47:37have this episode when they did the previous episode, but it's
- 47:43like, like, look at him. He's like, why are you doing
- 47:46this? What an earth?
- 47:47Like, why would you ever think I would want this?
- 47:51English, typical takes the show. I think it works.
- 47:53That Missy misunderstands. The doctor entirely in the sun
- 47:56says what the doctors all about, but Like Miss.
- 48:00He's been doing a big plan all the way throughout and it's
- 48:05this. Yeah, like, and like, you could
- 48:09have done this without like, capturing everyone who died and
- 48:15you can adjust like gone to a sideman planet and like fiddled
- 48:19them all, and give them to the doctor Eagle video that she
- 48:22could you just captured like a couple of sideman freyr's and
- 48:26said, right. Come on, boys.
- 48:28Yeah. Like sometimes the more you look
- 48:31at the episode, the war interest and the more quality, you fine.
- 48:35And sometimes the more you interrogating episodes the more
- 48:39sufferance. But I think especially happens
- 48:41in this era because he tends to over promise.
- 48:44He promises a lot which means you've got a deliver a lot.
- 48:49You know, all rusty Davis does is write bad wolf.
- 48:52And that's not a big promise. That's just a mystery.
- 48:55Yeah. Yeah, but that's great.
- 48:58I mean, okay, okay. Please wait here Maalik right
- 49:01here. This is he big gray.
- 49:03This is all right, you're trying to be positive now, on you
- 49:06deliver a lady. Yeah.
- 49:08Wait, no. No, but while we're talking
- 49:09about, like, promising delivery to, you know, what the hybrid is
- 49:130, nobody knows what the hybrid is, but I did a season with
- 49:17that, you're asking an interview and he'd probably give you a pat
- 49:20response. That doesn't make any sense.
- 49:22And then he said he was a platinum.
- 49:24Sponsor doesn't make any sense because it's up to the audience
- 49:26to use their own intelligence in this scene.
- 49:29Season. The doctor has been criticizing
- 49:33Danny pink for being a soldier and a member of an army.
- 49:36Yeah. Yeah, but now he convinced his
- 49:39Clara to give him autonomy and be the leader of an army and to
- 49:45commit suicide. In order to save the Earth as an
- 49:51ethical dilemmas go. It's right up there, isn't it?
- 49:59This too. I'm going to utilize this.
- 50:04Yeah, well, you Okay, so Doctor Who is an action show.
- 50:09So you've got to have a lot of action and sometimes there's
- 50:12thousands of dialects and you've got to blow them all up at the
- 50:14end of the episodes and that creates huge problems for
- 50:18Doctor. Who's ethical standpoint?
- 50:21Because it's always going to end with an explosion and mass
- 50:24murder. Yeah, that's true.
- 50:27And this and when Danny pink is a sideman.
- 50:30One of the enemy. Oh God.
- 50:32Shut up. Daddy.
- 50:33We don't care about your speech. I didn't care much about Peters
- 50:36feet. I don't care about you.
- 50:38Shut up. Do you think Paul Samuel,
- 50:42laughed, his head off between, it's like shooting these things
- 50:45dressed up, like that for an actor, like, irrespective of
- 50:51what's happening. This is probably so much fun.
- 50:53This is probably like, so great to do, and he probably had the
- 50:57most amazing time doing this, all the effects, all the speech,
- 51:01or the cameras on in its. Ah, I don't know what it was
- 51:05like before this or after this, but very He soon around this, he
- 51:09did a season of the sitcom troll eat the sky.
- 51:12Once it control it on the sky one, which is set in the
- 51:15supermarket and you know, it's like it's a fun show but is, you
- 51:18know, like a location-based sitcom.
- 51:21This is just like, so out there compared to that.
- 51:24Yeah, but they loved it. I want to see you when they do
- 51:28this as well. When they just burn away the
- 51:31threat, they did it. At the end of the sontaran, two
- 51:33parts, who didn't they? So the Sydney Opera House is
- 51:35saved. Yeah.
- 51:39Well, that's the whole planet, then take the digital filter
- 51:42off. Yeah, the Phil's gone.
- 51:43Yeah. So these these Graves now, which
- 51:53mysteriously are not like the given the Cybermen or Came out
- 51:56of those. There's no worth that's been
- 51:58moved at all. These are just like marking
- 52:02people's lives. Now, rather than actually having
- 52:03the remains underneath them. Was that, right?
- 52:07Well, you know, it's graveyard. You want going to go check on?
- 52:10You doesn't matter. Oh, no, you know what's coming
- 52:15now? Okay.
- 52:18So the first time we watch this, we went around our friends else.
- 52:22Rich the mic. I would like additional watching
- 52:26various episodes of the seasons of Doctor Who and having some
- 52:29champagne or someone by having a few drinks.
- 52:32And there those guys are fantastic.
- 52:35They're both vegetarians are fantastic Cooks.
- 52:38So it's always impressive go wrong by placing your having a
- 52:41great meal. And so I probably didn't have
- 52:47enough to Before this one and we had a lot of champagne because
- 52:51its series finale and honestly, I was absolutely trotted by this
- 52:57point. Okay.
- 52:58I was blasted off my tits. The first overall you needed to
- 53:01be and and I woke up in the morning so that you wake up in
- 53:06the morning. Yeah, hang on.
- 53:10Did that actually happen in dachshund you last night?
- 53:13Get that kind of happened. What?
- 53:17Light. Like your your partner, yeah is
- 53:22famously, the most funniest man in Doctor Who circles, right?
- 53:27Yes. What was his reaction to the
- 53:29Cyber break. He thinks it is extraordinary
- 53:33misjudged and very poor. And you know, I mean like what
- 53:39the what the only thing that would be more disrespectful is
- 53:43if they all walked over to Nicholas Courtney's, actual
- 53:46grave in this scene and do Silva.
- 53:49Yeah, it's socialized to figure. That's my box I made up now.
- 53:52So usually it's just so Like, he's gonna Slaughter, they
- 53:57Saint, who would want this? And for the Brigadier, like, who
- 54:00would genuinely say, this is where we want his journey to end
- 54:04as a sign of skates. Flatters performance.
- 54:07Yeah. Oh, but uh, red shoes, I think
- 54:13snow on her. Unconscious acting might be her
- 54:15best acting yet. You know, it's very convincing.
- 54:18She's not moving. And he said wake up.
- 54:26Though the brakes are always wanted you to salute here and
- 54:28then he salutes him. But he's the silent man.
- 54:30It's just so tasteless. And and what is it with
- 54:35moffat's? Brigadier fetish?
- 54:37Okay. This drives me absolutely
- 54:40Furious because Nicholas currently was huge and it was
- 54:45great to play respects to him. When Matt Smith phones up and
- 54:49find out the Brigadier as died. I thought I was really good.
- 54:52But we pay respect to him again in this story.
- 54:55And again, twice Upon a Time. Are you okay?
- 54:59Yeah, well, maybe he was a big character baby using a lot of
- 55:01episodes, but somebody else died.
- 55:05During the more Ferrara who is deserving of equal, if not more
- 55:10respect, and that's list later. And where's the tribute to her?
- 55:15Yeah, that infuriates me that it's always about the Brigadier.
- 55:22Well, you know, as you know, who did the tribute to list later,
- 55:24don't you? That was rough.
- 55:28Magnificent during a lockdown. I still worry.
- 55:32Cried buckets watching that. You know, what?
- 55:34If I'm having a really bad day, right?
- 55:36I need to cry. I put that on.
- 55:39I watch that because it makes me cry every time and and it's one
- 55:46of his best Doctor Who pieces of writing because in a very short
- 55:49space of time, you're going from laughing from celebrating the
- 55:53Sarah, Jane Adventures to tears and tears and art fantastic and
- 55:57like it. Like 10 minutes.
- 56:00It's a 10-minute. So, you know, I do this bit
- 56:04contradicts, what has been going on in the entire rest of the
- 56:07episode, which is they're not really dead.
- 56:09They just upload their personalities and from there the
- 56:11sphere. And but they're going to
- 56:13reanimate the corpses of Cybermen why it's actually Danny
- 56:18coming back from the dead. What the fuck?
- 56:20And there has to be that is Dreadful science fiction
- 56:23explanation. As to why only one person can go
- 56:26through, you know, Everyone can come back for the day, everyone,
- 56:32what happened to that kid. Anyway, well, I wouldn't it be
- 56:34nice if my Clara had adoptive else if she'd have left at this
- 56:37point, you know Clara look to be the cupboard and going to do the
- 56:41cleaning. I'll fair enough fair enough.
- 56:43See now this sequence here whether in the cafe.
- 56:46Yeah, I think it's nicely written and it's very nicely
- 56:51accident, but I just want some relief after the unrelenting
- 56:56grimness that we watched. I One.
- 56:58I want them to have a hug and be like, okay, Gallifrey is gone.
- 57:02Danny's dead. I love you.
- 57:05Let's go and have Adventures. I think if it had been a fun
- 57:09adventure, having this sort of dark scene towards the element
- 57:13would have been really good and I think it is.
- 57:15It's one of the like on its own one of the most brilliant,
- 57:20clever scenes and what Ferrara because nobody's saying, what
- 57:24they really feel. They're both lying to each other
- 57:27through their teeth. And it leaves so many unresolved
- 57:30threads. It's brilliant, but on the whole
- 57:43be really dark like you. So that's why I love last
- 57:46Christmas because it undoes the mistakes.
- 57:49It gets them talking to each other.
- 57:51They have a fun adventure and at the end, they grab each other's
- 57:55hands and they run to the Tardis to go and have a really great
- 57:57adventure. ER, that's what I want to hear.
- 57:59Basically, that's what you want. You want to be squealing with
- 58:03excitement, like Chris about what could happen next Guardian.
- 58:06I mean, do what do we want to end the season with the doctor
- 58:09beating up the console? Like he does and a bit?
- 58:13Yeah, out of Rage for not being able to fight.
- 58:15I got out of range of not being able to find Java free.
- 58:19Do we actually up for Birds? Yeah.
- 58:21Do we care? You ran away from Gallifrey for
- 58:23God's sakes? Yeah.
- 58:25I know he's looking for go to frame.
- 58:27That's his big butts. But Smith quest of The Day of
- 58:30the Doctor, but like we know he's not going to find it for
- 58:34ages and I'm surprised. He phoned it as soon as he did
- 58:38because I thought to speak that unresolved forever always have
- 58:42that hanging over. You that Gallifrey may come back
- 58:44this out there somewhere. Have you seen hell been?
- 58:47I wish you had, Dr. Who eating soup at the time Lords Harford
- 58:53episodes? The season.
- 58:58I'm sorry with the doctor literally physically.
- 59:00Abusing the Tardis. He's probably so good.
- 59:04They look at how he sells it. Look at times in the emotion of
- 59:07the scene. There is no point in his realm
- 59:09where he is now 100% compelling, but I just don't want to see
- 59:12that. I in like again in a Jolly
- 59:19episode as a bit of a contrast as bit of a flavor that could be
- 59:23really good in this episode where everybody's just dead and
- 59:27they're all being from a This is a dying immediately and oh my
- 59:31God, even when you die, you still suffer all going to hell.
- 59:35Essentially saying that life is shit.
- 59:38Relationships are shit, dying is shit.
- 59:42Have friendships are shit. Anyway, here's will see you at
- 59:46Christmas, you know, Michaels place of Jolly music now, your
- 59:51daddy will be fine. Even though Daddy's dead.
- 59:54It's like I can see why people had like a Mm of reaction
- 59:59against this season. Yes.
- 1:00:01I also also I think like I mean, I judge a judge people, Everyone
- 1:00:05judges everyone but I judge car is the kind of person who have a
- 1:00:09fling with a guy with Danny and like think she loves him.
- 1:00:13But actually it's just a fling, you know, it's just a romantic
- 1:00:17image. She's got in her head, Steven,
- 1:00:19she'll get over it, you be judging me.
- 1:00:21I swear, I spent 10 years of my life doing that.
- 1:00:23You know, what else isn't it, like, Who is okay?
- 1:00:31I'm going to say, what is the nature of love?
- 1:00:34What if I've got? What four minutes to answer it?
- 1:00:38If that I think like the loving somebody and being in love with?
- 1:00:44Somebody are two very different things in love.
- 1:00:47Are you sharing your life with somebody is your partner, but I
- 1:00:52do say I love you to a lot of my friends because my heart
- 1:00:57literally swell. Pull them aside.
- 1:01:01So that's how you feel. Yeah, cuz how you feel about
- 1:01:04love is something that people selling the UK.
- 1:01:06Talk about very little. I mean, like, do you think
- 1:01:09Lauren loves the doctor? Yes, and I feel like they're
- 1:01:13both. Are they and he loves her and
- 1:01:15they're utterly unable to communicate it.
- 1:01:18Do you think Laura's love the doctor and Danny?
- 1:01:22I think she can be in love with Danny and love the doctor now,
- 1:01:26but hang on. What is your in a polyamorous
- 1:01:29polygamous relationship? Well, but then you have to ask
- 1:01:34this laugh, have to be sexual because the companions fall in
- 1:01:37love with the doctor all the time.
- 1:01:40But it's going to be a sexual relationship.
- 1:01:43I think the closest we got to polygamy was Amy.
- 1:01:45Pond's the Matt Smith dots are in Rory.
- 1:01:48Oh, yeah, they're all at it on the but I don't know.
- 1:01:53Okay, here we go. So I think there are no we
- 1:01:57should talk about Father Christmas first, shouldn't we?
- 1:01:58Yeah, hang on. This is I mean, I think this is
- 1:02:01the best thing in the episode. This is so I think it's
- 1:02:05absolutely terrible. Oh no, go on.
- 1:02:09I think this is. Okay.
- 1:02:11So as somebody who has written a doctor who fan fiction audio
- 1:02:15featuring for the Christmas. I think this is, I think Nick
- 1:02:20Frost plays it wrong. I think it's wrong to have it at
- 1:02:25this point. I think it's wrong for him to
- 1:02:28burst him and say you can't end it like that because it
- 1:02:30basically says Steven moffat's cocked up here.
- 1:02:33I I think it's so bad or every little criticizing his own story
- 1:02:39saying, you can't ND like, you know, you fucked up the pace in
- 1:02:43Steven get I suppose I suppose in the terms of dogged him being
- 1:02:46a Continuing Story, we know more is coming.
- 1:02:49So if he does want to rewrite some, I suppose it's an
- 1:02:52interesting segue. Excuse me, you wrote your own
- 1:02:55Santa Claus. Doctor Who story?
- 1:02:58Yes, some of you may remember Planet skaro.
- 1:03:01Audios. Oh, I know.
- 1:03:04And you other still bags over here.
- 1:03:06There's still out there. There's something hidden online
- 1:03:09because there's some people who were in them and for various
- 1:03:13reasons don't want to be associated with them anymore.
- 1:03:16So they're not like we're not going to put them on YouTube or
- 1:03:18Spotify or anything rash, but you can still download them and
- 1:03:22listen to them. They were all Pilots Carro de
- 1:03:24org.uk. The what I wrote is the first
- 1:03:28one, a row, it was called Doctor Who and the Christmas gnomes and
- 1:03:31it was intended to be the Christmas that he Christmassy
- 1:03:33cities. Story ever.
- 1:03:36Okay, so I'm going to go find those and that's going to be the
- 1:03:40first or do I have to listen to them in?
- 1:03:41Order? Is there like a story?
- 1:03:43You'd listen to me any order you like.
- 1:03:45But there I think the first three have a bit of an arc going
- 1:03:49but yeah, they will grab their own fun.
- 1:03:52How is this, the third commentary we've done.
- 1:03:54And this is the first time you brought this out because it was
- 1:03:58a we did the last one about 10 years ago.
- 1:04:00Don't you just write, or did you direct your act?
- 1:04:05I wrote I argued with everyone else about what should be in the
- 1:04:09story and I directed and produced one of the episodes are
- 1:04:14giving you argued with everybody.
- 1:04:17There was a bit of creative tension has been created
- 1:04:22tension. I don't want to go any further.
- 1:04:24I'm not gonna pry but so I'm assuming there's a website out
- 1:04:29there planets core. Yes, if you go to Planet, skaro
- 1:04:32Dot org.uk. Okay, and then search down from
- 1:04:36that. She find it too difficult.
- 1:04:38Honestly, Steven you like you literally the most Charming
- 1:04:40bloke. I can't.
- 1:04:41Imagine you going out, people like this.
- 1:04:44You know, I'm I only see in the best of you on these
- 1:04:47commentaries. Well, that's because I learned
- 1:04:50not to be so fucking precious know whose stories and it was
- 1:04:56very character building for me. Okay?
- 1:04:59Well, okay. So let's slide away from planet.
- 1:05:01Skaro, guys. Let's slide back to death.
- 1:05:04Heaven. Steven why should somebody go to
- 1:05:08their share of the back of us? Slacking it off for an hour, go
- 1:05:12to their shelf, grab death in heaven, and our water and stick
- 1:05:16it on well because it will be your one and only opportunity to
- 1:05:23raise a drink, a drink, a drink to Danny looking for a savior.
- 1:05:30All, thank you. He made some The compounds most
- 1:05:37efficacious in every way by the first officer.
- 1:05:46I've had. Yeah, I'm telling you.
- 1:05:48Oh, you've been waiting on. You been sitting on that the
- 1:05:51whole time, haven't you? I'll still look at that. 20
- 1:05:54minutes before we start the episode lunch break.
- 1:05:56Oh God. You want to hear the versus?
- 1:05:58Yes. Come on.
- 1:06:00Oh, dr. Skaros had water all over.
- 1:06:04She was a stair, leads in the case.
- 1:06:09So they gave medicinal compounds and now she can fly all over the
- 1:06:14place. Oh, that's rather good, you
- 1:06:18know, and verse 20 go then there's the bolster just planted
- 1:06:24disaster. Always a loser in every way.
- 1:06:29So they gave him medicinal compounds.
- 1:06:33He became Miss, see, gave the doctor a kiss, see that with the
- 1:06:38side. And then every year, can we go
- 1:06:42back to the chorus again? Will Please drink a drink.
- 1:06:49A drink to Daddy Pig, the bleep? Do they decide you're all here.
- 1:06:56Oh my God. I'm sorry.
- 1:07:02I don't know where to go off to that.
- 1:07:04Hang on. What did I need to ask you?
- 1:07:07Oh, I had a question to ask you. You know, it's all.
- 1:07:12I'm not sure I'll recover from that year.
- 1:07:15I'll be singing that all night. That either but he pink.
- 1:07:20What did you think of season 9? That was my question.
- 1:07:27Okay, right. So imagine every single swear
- 1:07:33word you've ever heard in your life, lovely.
- 1:07:37And then apply those as adjectives to description words.
- 1:07:42So it's what verbs nouns and something.
- 1:07:44So so things like a fucking pile of shit.
- 1:08:13Series 9, I thought like, okay. I made it through the Magician's
- 1:08:19Apprentice with the doctor all the time, going.
- 1:08:22All this. Clicks on a made under the lake
