- 0:01Samuel: Hey everyone. Welcome to
- 0:03Samuel: Community Routes, a place where
- 0:05Samuel: we gather in community to talk
- 0:06Samuel: about mental health so we can
- 0:08Samuel: travel the journey of life
- 0:09Samuel: together.
- 0:10Samuel: I'm Samuel Richards.
- 0:12Julie: I'm Julie Richards.
- 0:14Sarah: I'm Sarah Wakefield.
- 0:17Samuel: And boom, we're back.
- 0:20Samuel: It's been a year, but we wanted
- 0:22Samuel: to kind of take this moment to
- 0:24Samuel: reconnect with you, you know,
- 0:26Samuel: maybe go over this past year and
- 0:28Samuel: what's ahead.
- 0:30Julie: We've been talking together about how sometimes any of us
- 0:35Julie: need to sometimes step back a little bit, regroup, rest up.
- 0:40Julie: We even have times of, um, withdrawal or being overly
- 0:48Julie: involved in a lot of things.
- 0:49Julie: But this past year in
- 0:51Julie: particular, I think has been a
- 0:53Julie: lot for those of us living in
- 0:55Julie: the US and, um, lots of
- 0:59Julie: political changes, lots of
- 1:00Julie: things happening that are
- 1:03Julie: impacting us day to day, and
- 1:06Julie: continually things happening in
- 1:08Julie: the news that are mentally
- 1:11Julie: draining.
- 1:12Julie: So, um, we're just acknowledging together and with you all
- 1:17Julie: because we do we do miss being together, and we do miss
- 1:22Julie: reaching out to you all.
- 1:24Julie: And, um, we just wanted to kind
- 1:27Julie: of name for just a moment how
- 1:30Julie: time is so mysterious that, uh,
- 1:35Julie: time can either go really,
- 1:36Julie: really fast where we're
- 1:38Julie: surprised it's been a whole
- 1:39Julie: year, and other times that days
- 1:42Julie: are long or seasons are hard,
- 1:44Julie: and that we really just don't go
- 1:47Julie: through time as it's happening
- 1:49Julie: because there are so many layers
- 1:51Julie: to it.
- 1:52Julie: So we've been reflecting a
- 1:54Julie: little bit about how emotionally
- 1:57Julie: and psychologically,
- 1:59Julie: relationally, sometimes even
- 2:01Julie: unconsciously.
- 2:02Julie: We have just too much to do and
- 2:06Julie: too much to feel, too much to
- 2:07Julie: notice, too much to process,
- 2:10Julie: that we don't have time to do,
- 2:12Julie: that we don't, um, pause to
- 2:14Julie: reflect together and to really,
- 2:17Julie: truly tend to what's coming up
- 2:19Julie: for us.
- 2:20Julie: So we're looking forward to being back with you all and with
- 2:24Julie: each other, just to tend to it, to reflect together, to come
- 2:29Julie: back to the basics of things that are very foundational to
- 2:33Julie: our mental health, things that we practice really well for a
- 2:39Julie: while and sometimes get tired of keeping up with.
- 2:43Julie: I know for me, I've been someone who just really enjoys yoga as a
- 2:50Julie: practice, and I take a break for a while, and sometimes I take
- 2:55Julie: too long of a break.
- 2:56Julie: And so, um, I've been coming
- 2:59Julie: back lately to some Meditation
- 3:02Julie: with the calm app and wanting to
- 3:05Julie: get back into some stretching
- 3:07Julie: and some yoga, and also just
- 3:08Julie: this gathering with the three of
- 3:11Julie: us here at Community Roots, as
- 3:13Julie: well as our community of of
- 3:15Julie: listeners who are here with us
- 3:17Julie: to.
- 3:21Sarah: I just want to thank our
- 3:22Sarah: community of listeners for their
- 3:24Sarah: continued listening.
- 3:29Sarah: It's amazing, Julie Sam, that we have had a year.
- 3:33Sarah: And Julie, with what you were saying about how we we can't
- 3:36Sarah: really process time.
- 3:39Sarah: You know, I was thinking about
- 3:40Sarah: emotions and how when I'm happy,
- 3:43Sarah: time seems to be completely
- 3:46Sarah: filled.
- 3:48Sarah: And when I'm stressed, time
- 3:53Sarah: takes on a whole different
- 3:55Sarah: meaning.
- 3:56Sarah: If I'm if I'm stressed, it
- 3:58Sarah: usually goes by too fast or not
- 4:01Sarah: fast enough.
- 4:03Sarah: And if I'm sad.
- 4:04Samuel: Simultaneously.
- 4:05Sarah: Yeah. Simultaneously. And then if.
- 4:07Sarah: When I'm sad and grieving, time seems to stand still.
- 4:12Sarah: Um, so.
- 4:15Sarah: So getting back into the swing
- 4:18Sarah: of things, I mean, it took us
- 4:20Sarah: how many takes to get started
- 4:22Sarah: today.
- 4:23Sarah: Like, it's that getting back
- 4:26Sarah: into movement, back into
- 4:31Sarah: practice.
- 4:32Julie: Mhm.
- 4:33Sarah: But I think that also that also reflects how difficult of a year
- 4:39Sarah: it has been in
- 4:41Julie: Mhm.
- 4:41Sarah: all different simultaneously experiences of time.
- 4:49Sarah: And I feel like I'm finally ready after this whole year.
- 4:52Sarah: I've, I feel like I'm finally
- 4:54Sarah: ready to expend energy that I
- 4:57Sarah: haven't had for so long and to
- 5:02Sarah: have the mental capacity to give
- 5:06Sarah: up.
- 5:08Julie: And there's so much validation in that to be able to name the
- 5:11Julie: hard and how things are.
- 5:13Julie: Sometimes they throw you off track.
- 5:17Julie: I mean, even the best of intentions, of things we want to
- 5:20Julie: do or to practice, it can be hard to juggle all the things.
- 5:26Sarah: My.
- 5:26Julie: It can be hard to do them.
- 5:28Julie: And I guess that's that is why we call it a practice.
- 5:31Julie: You know, in meditation it's
- 5:32Julie: something of you start noticing
- 5:36Julie: and you start picking up on
- 5:39Julie: little things.
- 5:41Julie: You talked about that as being a practice for something that you
- 5:45Julie: appreciate as noticing.
- 5:47Julie: Um, noticing good things or
- 5:51Julie: noticing small details of things
- 5:53Julie: that.
- 5:56Samuel: Yeah,
- 5:57Julie: Um.
- 5:57Samuel: even what we're about to do now,
- 5:58Samuel: it kind of reminds me of the
- 6:00Samuel: point.
- 6:00Samuel: I liked your point of yoga
- 6:02Samuel: because it reminds me of this
- 6:03Samuel: point.
- 6:03Samuel: I don't know if your yoga instructor does this, but you
- 6:07Samuel: might take a moment in your meditation or just yoga practice
- 6:11Samuel: to just close your eyes and just be laying on the mat.
- 6:15Samuel: And then after a couple of minutes, then the yoga
- 6:18Samuel: instructor is like, all right, now start to feel your toes and
- 6:22Samuel: wiggle your toes.
- 6:24Samuel: And that's kind of where we're
- 6:25Samuel: at of just like, oh, a waking up
- 6:27Samuel: of some ways because, yeah, I
- 6:30Samuel: mean, all three of us have hit
- 6:31Samuel: on this.
- 6:32Samuel: It has been a hard year, and
- 6:33Samuel: it's wild how it's both flown
- 6:36Samuel: by.
- 6:37Samuel: And, um, you know, felt
- 6:40Samuel: enormously long at the same
- 6:42Samuel: time.
- 6:43Samuel: So, uh, in that practice of
- 6:46Samuel: meditation, you know, and, uh,
- 6:49Samuel: yoga, as we kind of take the
- 6:51Samuel: time to reawaken ourselves and
- 6:54Samuel: refocus ourselves, uh, we're
- 6:57Samuel: also looking to name, you know,
- 7:00Samuel: the next steps and what that
- 7:02Samuel: looks like.
- 7:03Samuel: um, something we were talking
- 7:05Samuel: about, uh, for this next
- 7:07Samuel: iteration.
- 7:08Samuel: And what you might come to
- 7:09Samuel: expect is episodes that you
- 7:12Samuel: could listen on your daily
- 7:14Samuel: commute.
- 7:15Samuel: You know, if you're going or driving into work or finding
- 7:18Samuel: that time just to take, you know, a little bit of extra time
- 7:21Samuel: to think about the basics.
- 7:23Samuel: You know, it's kind of applicable today that we're
- 7:25Samuel: talking about time because that's one of the basics.
- 7:29Samuel: You know, um, some other things we want to talk about is breath
- 7:34Samuel: or feeding yourself.
- 7:36Samuel: Um, and something even this year
- 7:39Samuel: that we want to talk about is
- 7:40Samuel: holiday help, how to Survive the
- 7:42Samuel: holidays, one of a cr sort of
- 7:44Samuel: classic, um, but, uh, so, you
- 7:51Samuel: know, as we kind of look into
- 7:52Samuel: the future, I also want to talk
- 7:54Samuel: maybe a little bit about a call
- 7:56Samuel: to action.
- 7:58Samuel: You know, uh, in these episodes sometime we've taken a moment of
- 8:01Samuel: pause to reflect on a of gratitude or a mantra.
- 8:05Samuel: Something we are talking about
- 8:07Samuel: is, you know, how do we make
- 8:10Samuel: some of these lessons
- 8:11Samuel: actionable?
- 8:13Samuel: And, um, so I'm just kind of
- 8:16Samuel: looking forward to some of the
- 8:17Samuel: new changes we're looking at,
- 8:19Samuel: you know, this next iteration of
- 8:21Samuel: community roots.
- 8:22Samuel: Just, um, you know, taking advantage of the time we've got
- 8:26Samuel: and the lessons we've sort of learned this year and turning
- 8:30Samuel: that into rubber hits the road.
- 8:33Samuel: So do any other thoughts come to
- 8:35Samuel: mind, or do we want to talk
- 8:36Samuel: about this week's kind of call
- 8:38Samuel: to action before the next
- 8:40Samuel: episode?
- 8:42Julie: I just appreciate the the growth
- 8:45Julie: that happens when we let
- 8:46Julie: something unfold or evolve,
- 8:49Julie: because
- 8:50Samuel: Mm.
- 8:50Julie: this is authenticity at its
- 8:53Julie: finest as just we're on the path
- 8:56Julie: with you all and walking and
- 8:59Julie: living in the same climates that
- 9:02Julie: you are.
- 9:03Julie: And.
- 9:05Julie: taking lessons from the day to day.
- 9:07Julie: And sometimes we see that in nature.
- 9:10Julie: We see that in news, we see that in conversation.
- 9:13Julie: We see that in gathering, in community and the connections
- 9:20Julie: that we're making.
- 9:21Julie: It's like we if we can be, if we can learn how to be more present
- 9:26Julie: and show up to the extent that we are able, um, there's a
- 9:32Julie: rhythm in that.
- 9:33Julie: There's a flow in that that is
- 9:35Julie: really meaningful and really
- 9:38Julie: worth living.
- 9:41Julie: So I'm
- 9:42Samuel: Collective
- 9:42Julie: looking forward
- 9:42Samuel: heartbeat.
- 9:43Julie: to that.
- 9:43Julie: Yeah, it is a collective heartbeat that we are not alone
- 9:47Julie: and we are connected to more than just ourselves.
- 9:51Julie: And we're just here to notice that together and to lean in
- 9:56Julie: and, um, hopefully be a voice of encouragement and hope and life
- 10:04Julie: and connection and relationship.
- 10:11Sarah: I love the the space that you
- 10:13Sarah: guys are creating for us to be
- 10:16Sarah: where we are and to be to
- 10:18Sarah: unfold.
- 10:19Sarah: I love that because it makes it seem it allows this period not
- 10:24Sarah: to have been, um, I don't want to say wasted, but it allows.
- 10:30Sarah: It gives.
- 10:34Sarah: Purpose and meaning to the times
- 10:36Sarah: when we can't, um, when we have
- 10:40Sarah: to pull back and have to tend to
- 10:43Sarah: ourselves.
- 10:44Sarah: It's not time that is just thrown away.
- 10:49Sarah: It is.
- 10:51Sarah: There is a purpose.
- 10:52Sarah: There is.
- 10:56Sarah: Growth happening when we can't even when we can't see it.
- 11:01Samuel: I also like the idea of
- 11:02Samuel: unfolding that it might like,
- 11:04Samuel: you know, there's a process to
- 11:05Samuel: unfolding.
- 11:06Samuel: It isn't just like, you know, a balloon that's just like, bam,
- 11:09Samuel: there's a balloon.
- 11:11Samuel: You know, it's something that kind of, you know, it's like an
- 11:13Samuel: inhale and exhale.
- 11:15Samuel: It takes a moment to accomplish.
- 11:19Sarah: Well
- 11:19Julie: I
- 11:19Sarah: and
- 11:19Samuel: Um.
- 11:19Julie: was
- 11:19Sarah: we
- 11:19Julie: recently
- 11:19Sarah: reference
- 11:20Julie: given.
- 11:21Julie: Go ahead.
- 11:21Sarah: we
- 11:21Julie: Sarah.
- 11:22Sarah: reference plants so often in our community.
- 11:25Julie: I was going
- 11:25Sarah: Roots.
- 11:25Julie: to give my plant story.
- 11:26Julie: That's exactly what I was going to say.
- 11:27Julie: I was just
- 11:28Sarah: Perfect.
- 11:28Julie: given this beautiful clipping from a good friend and person.
- 11:35Julie: I really look up to a whole lot.
- 11:37Julie: That's this beautiful leaf that is like purple on one side and
- 11:42Julie: green and shimmery on the other side, and left it in like water
- 11:48Julie: for a month,
- 11:50Samuel: Mm.
- 11:50Julie: six weeks or more to try to give it some time to make some roots.
- 11:55Julie: And I recently just transplanted that to put it in soil.
- 12:00Julie: And it's a bumpy start.
- 12:02Julie: Like I'm hoping it's gonna make it.
- 12:04Julie: It's been
- 12:05Samuel: Mm.
- 12:06Julie: tender.
- 12:07Julie: And, you know, I think that's that's a visual too, of like new
- 12:14Julie: beginnings that are
- 12:14Sarah: Thank
- 12:15Julie: evolving,
- 12:15Sarah: you very much.
- 12:15Julie: evolving are sometimes also like,
- 12:18Sarah: Thank
- 12:18Julie: okay,
- 12:19Sarah: you.
- 12:19Julie: it's hard to take a step.
- 12:20Julie: It's hard to transition into
- 12:25Julie: something new and to kind of
- 12:26Julie: come out of our shell a little
- 12:28Julie: bit and to lean into whatever
- 12:33Julie: messiness or ambiguity life has
- 12:36Julie: to offer.
- 12:36Julie: We're showing up for that, too, and
- 12:38Sarah: Mm.
- 12:38Julie: I think that matters.
- 12:40Julie: And maybe where you are today,
- 12:42Julie: if you're listening to us,
- 12:44Julie: you're wondering how to face the
- 12:46Julie: holidays.
- 12:46Julie: You're wondering how to, um, keep showing up.
- 12:51Julie: And, um, we're here in that spot
- 12:55Julie: with you, and we're walking it
- 12:57Julie: together.
- 13:00Samuel: We are definitely walking it together.
- 13:03Samuel: Uh, we don't have some sort of futuristic insight or anything.
- 13:07Samuel: It is definitely a journey.
- 13:10Samuel: Um, well, uh, before we let you go, let's talk about the, uh,
- 13:15Samuel: call to action for next week.
- 13:17Samuel: So community roots has always been like a place where we
- 13:22Samuel: imagined, you know, drinking cups of coffee, uh, together as
- 13:26Samuel: a group and just having conversations about, you know,
- 13:29Samuel: mental health and just coming together as a community.
- 13:32Samuel: And so this one was mom's idea,
- 13:35Samuel: you know, finding something warm
- 13:37Samuel: for next week, you know, finding
- 13:39Samuel: a way, maybe even during this
- 13:41Samuel: episode.
- 13:42Samuel: How can you find the warmth
- 13:43Samuel: where you are, you know, is that
- 13:45Samuel: a blanket that you throw on
- 13:46Samuel: yourself?
- 13:47Samuel: Is that the cup of coffee you've got in your hand or tea?
- 13:51Samuel: Uh, is that snuggling up just next to your dog or your cat?
- 13:55Samuel: Like, uh, Sarah has, uh, and just, you know, in this season,
- 14:01Samuel: appreciating the warmth and just taking that time to appreciate
- 14:05Samuel: the things around you.
- 14:07Samuel: Um, if you do those things and
- 14:11Samuel: you also find that you have a
- 14:12Samuel: moment of pause, reach out to
- 14:14Samuel: us.
- 14:15Samuel: We would love to.
- 14:16Samuel: As we're kind of planning this next journey.
- 14:19Samuel: We want to hear from you.
- 14:21Samuel: You know what do your breaths look like?
- 14:23Samuel: What do your steps look like
- 14:24Samuel: that you want to hear more about
- 14:26Samuel: or discover?
- 14:28Samuel: Um, those are all good stuff.
- 14:30Samuel: So next week, let's all, you know, maybe take a moment to
- 14:34Samuel: appreciate what's around us.
- 14:36Samuel: Where's the warmth?
- 14:37Samuel: Where's the comfort?
- 14:38Samuel: You know, maybe if you're in a hot place, where's just the soft
- 14:42Samuel: rather than the warmth?
- 14:44Samuel: Even the sun is great.
- 14:46Samuel: Um. And then we'd love to hear from you, too.
- 14:50Samuel: Uh, so.
- 14:51Samuel: Yeah.
- 14:52Samuel: Folks, um, wanted to thank, uh.
- 14:55Samuel: Yeah.
- 14:55Samuel: Go for it.
- 14:56Samuel: Mom didn't
- 14:56Julie: I
- 14:56Samuel: want
- 14:57Julie: was
- 14:57Samuel: to leave
- 14:57Julie: just
- 14:57Samuel: you hanging
- 14:57Julie: gonna say
- 14:57Samuel: there.
- 14:57Julie: I really loved even that
- 14:59Julie: reminder from the yoga
- 15:00Julie: instructor of, like, Wiggle Your
- 15:02Julie: Toes.
- 15:03Julie: You know,
- 15:03Samuel: Yeah.
- 15:03Julie: whenever.
- 15:04Julie: It's when it's so hard to find movement, how we can just have a
- 15:08Julie: little bit of an organic stretch of wiggle your toes, wiggle your
- 15:12Julie: fingers, notice that you have hands, touch your cheek, you
- 15:17Julie: know, just to embody movement, to embody, um, touch and
- 15:24Julie: noticing like we have a body I think is another good action
- 15:28Samuel: Mm.
- 15:29Julie: step of like, yes, look for
- 15:31Julie: warmth, look for soft, look for
- 15:33Julie: comfort.
- 15:34Julie: And also, you know, take a moment to wiggle your toes.
- 15:39Julie: It's a it's a good little reminder of sometimes whenever
- 15:42Julie: we do, um, meditation and they say you can focus on your breath
- 15:45Julie: and they'll say, or you can pick
- 15:47Samuel: Mm.
- 15:47Julie: a sensation or a sound.
- 15:49Julie: Sometimes I think about my toes.
- 15:51Julie: I'm like,
- 15:52Samuel: Mm.
- 15:52Julie: I'm gonna.
- 15:53Julie: I'm gonna wiggle my toes.
- 15:54Julie: That's gonna be my foundation.
- 15:55Julie: So maybe I'm giving multiple action steps for for
- 16:01Samuel: No, I
- 16:01Julie: what
- 16:01Samuel: dig
- 16:02Julie: people
- 16:02Samuel: it.
- 16:02Julie: can do,
- 16:02Samuel: Yeah.
- 16:03Julie: but like kind of an assortment of things you can choose from of
- 16:07Julie: noticing what those calls to action can be.
- 16:11Julie: They're allowed to start small.
- 16:13Sarah: Mhm.
- 16:14Julie: It's
- 16:14Samuel: Aha!
- 16:14Julie: allowed to be
- 16:15Sarah: Yes.
- 16:15Julie: something of low hanging fruit of it's okay, I can start here.
- 16:19Julie: This is something that everyone can find something in that to
- 16:24Julie: take action on.
- 16:26Julie: Something warm, something soft.
- 16:28Julie: Wiggle your toes.
- 16:29Julie: Wiggle your fingers.
- 16:30Samuel: Wiggle your toes.
- 16:32Julie: I
- 16:32Samuel: That's
- 16:32Julie: like
- 16:32Samuel: going
- 16:32Julie: the wiggle
- 16:33Samuel: to be our next.
- 16:33Julie: your toes I know
- 16:34Sarah: I
- 16:34Julie: I kinda
- 16:34Sarah: love it so much.
- 16:36Julie: I.
- 16:36Samuel: That should go up with feed your inner plants.
- 16:39Samuel: You
- 16:39Julie: Yeah.
- 16:39Samuel: know, wiggle your toes.
- 16:40Julie: Wiggle your toes.
- 16:42Julie: Start there and know that we're doing that with you.
- 16:47Samuel: Agreed. Well, uh, Sarah.
- 16:49Samuel: Mom, it's been fantastic seeing
- 16:51Samuel: you both again and having these
- 16:53Samuel: conversations.
- 16:54Samuel: To those listening over the air, you know, in the United States
- 16:57Samuel: and around the world, we're thinking about you.
- 17:00Samuel: Uh, and we'll be here with you, and I hope you have a good week.
- 17:05Samuel: Wiggle your toes.
- 17:07Samuel: See
- 17:07Julie: See
- 17:07Samuel: you.
- 17:07Julie: you next time.
