- 1:50Speaker 3: Johnny, So you found out I was right?
- 1:54Speaker 2: You left our affairs date of Arizona and gone back
- 1:56Speaker 2: to Hartford. Wrong?
- 1:58Speaker 3: You mean you're still at Lake mahalave Our.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I sure am, and I am still betting.
- 2:02Speaker 3: That you haven't found anything to indicate Elmer Hobbs' death
- 2:04Speaker 3: wasn't bacci dential round it, Jake, So your.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Expenses will have to come right out of your own pockets.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Instead of the company.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Listen, as for that crew.
- 2:11Speaker 3: You talked about eating, how do you want it?
- 2:13Speaker 5: Cook?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Listen with you? What have you mailed any insurance claim yet?
- 2:18Speaker 6: What?
- 2:18Speaker 2: I'm just about to run it over to the post
- 2:19Speaker 2: office when your call came in. Tear it up?
- 2:22Speaker 4: What?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Because Jake Elma Hobbs was murdered.
- 2:32Speaker 7: While Bailey and the Exciting Adventures of the Man with
- 2:35Speaker 7: the Action Packed Expenser, caud America's fabulous Freeliance insurance investigator
- 2:39Speaker 7: is truly Shohnny.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Doll expense accounts submitted by a special investigator, Johnny Dollar
- 2:58Speaker 2: the Greater Southwest Insurance and Liability Company Kingman, Arizona office,
- 3:02Speaker 2: following as an acount of expenses incurred during my further
- 3:04Speaker 2: investigation of the mohave Red matter expenser count out of
- 3:13Speaker 2: one twenty cents for the phone called to Jake Kessler
- 3:15Speaker 2: and Kingman. I made that call in the office there
- 3:17Speaker 2: at Lake Mohavee Resort, and needless to say, Jake didn't
- 3:20Speaker 2: quite believe me at first. Murdered Elmer Hobbs was murdered, Jake,
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'd bet my last buck on it.
- 3:27Speaker 3: But Johnny, the.
- 3:28Speaker 8: Police spent two or three days over there, investigating the
- 3:31Speaker 8: coroner two and they all reported no evidence of foul play.
- 3:35Speaker 8: That's simply because they didn't know where to look. What
- 3:37Speaker 8: do you mean, You know Red Barrett, the old fishing
- 3:38Speaker 8: guide over here, I've heard of him. Well, Red found
- 3:41Speaker 8: the boat that Hobbes used that day was lying on
- 3:43Speaker 8: the bottom of one of the coves up in the
- 3:44Speaker 8: Big Basin. Sure because of the storm that drowned Elmer Hobbs,
- 3:48Speaker 8: because somebody sank it. That boat had a couple of
- 3:50Speaker 8: air tanks on it that would keep it a float
- 3:52Speaker 8: even if it was swamped. But Jake, those tanks were
- 3:56Speaker 8: cut open by whoever killed Hobbs.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but who did it, Johnny, That's what I'm gonna
- 4:03Speaker 2: find out. I'll call you later.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I hung up on.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Jake Kessler then walked on back to the dock, where
- 4:11Speaker 2: I found Red Barrett and Buster Favor waiting for me.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Did you get your call the Kingman two? All right, Johnny?
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Right, Jake Kessler's holding up the claim on Elma Hobb's insurance. Good,
- 4:24Speaker 2: that's good. Did you tell Buster what we found.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Up the lake, sir, Yeah, Johnny, he did. It's like
- 4:30Speaker 5: I said in the beginning, I just didn't see how
- 4:32Speaker 5: a man like mister Hobbs could ever get himself capsized
- 4:35Speaker 5: up in the big base, no matter how bad a
- 4:38Speaker 5: wind came up.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Buster was the only one that agreed with me. Johnny, Well,
- 4:41Speaker 2: quite frankly, I don't see why everybody wasn't suspicious when
- 4:44Speaker 2: Hobbs' boat wasn't found after the.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Storm, right, Johnny. But now that you and Red found
- 4:49Speaker 5: it sunk in the bottom of that cove and with
- 4:51Speaker 5: a flotation tanks cut open, yeah, it sure looks like murdy.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh That's what I thought from the first.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Buster.
- 4:57Speaker 2: That's why I telephoned all the way to Hartford get
- 5:00Speaker 2: Johnny out here. But who could have wanted to kill him?
- 5:03Speaker 2: Any ideas bust him?
- 5:05Speaker 5: No, sir, Johnny, I certainly.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Haven't sure there was nobody here at the resort who might.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Have wanted him out of the way, Johnny. The other
- 5:11Speaker 5: folks who were here at the time had happened, but
- 5:13Speaker 5: they didn't even know. Mister Howe. You sure, absolutely see.
- 5:17Speaker 5: He wasn't much of a mixer. He stayed by himself
- 5:20Speaker 5: all the time.
- 5:21Speaker 2: That's right, Johnny. Elmer used to go out fishing first
- 5:23Speaker 2: thing in the morning, and he'd be the last to
- 5:26Speaker 2: come in at night. He'd go to his room, cookie
- 5:28Speaker 2: supper and then go to bed. All right, Listen, he
- 5:31Speaker 2: was killed just before or during the big storm. Yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 2: that's right. Who else was out on the lake at
- 5:36Speaker 2: that time?
- 5:37Speaker 5: Nobody? Nobody from here, that is, all our people, all
- 5:41Speaker 5: our boats were back here at the landing. They'd got
- 5:43Speaker 5: the storm warning.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So, don't you see, Johnny, it must have been somebody
- 5:46Speaker 2: from up the league. What do you mean, from one
- 5:48Speaker 2: of the other landings. What other landings, Cottonwood Emories, anyone
- 5:53Speaker 2: of them? Yes, sir, somebody sank his boat and tried
- 5:57Speaker 2: to sink his body with.
- 5:58Speaker 5: It, But we found that his body washed up on
- 6:01Speaker 5: the vody. Sure you found it, red.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yes, I did. My best friend I drove down to
- 6:06Speaker 2: that boat, Buster, and I found not only the bashed
- 6:09Speaker 2: in floatation tanks. Why the ankle line had apparently been
- 6:12Speaker 2: lashed around the body to hold it there. And you remember, Buster,
- 6:15Speaker 2: the rope marks we found on Elmer's body.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Yeah, but the police, Sheriff Corner and the Red what
- 6:21Speaker 5: did they say he probably just got tangled up in
- 6:24Speaker 5: that rope when he was fighting the storm. But they
- 6:27Speaker 5: were wrong? Yeah, apparently.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Why do you say that, Johnny, Well, because so far
- 6:31Speaker 2: this evidence of murder is well, it's all circumstantial. That's
- 6:35Speaker 2: for motive.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Motive. Well, I hadn't thought of that.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Red. Well, the main thing is that that cut and
- 6:42Speaker 2: open the flotation tanks was done with some kind of
- 6:45Speaker 2: a nag. I was asking about motive. And I know
- 6:48Speaker 2: that Elmer didn't have any axe on that boat.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Do you find the axe, Johnny?
- 6:52Speaker 1: No?
- 6:52Speaker 2: No, no, Red, And I'll tell you what he had
- 6:54Speaker 2: in his boat beside his clothes. I mean, let's cover
- 6:56Speaker 2: this motive. Thing. He had to anchor, of course, that
- 6:59Speaker 2: went with the boat. He had a nice new sil
- 7:01Speaker 2: of flex rod with a Mitchell three hundred on it.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He had a long handled neck that he picked up
- 7:06Speaker 2: somewhere in LA and an old beat up McKinney tackle
- 7:09Speaker 2: box full of plugs and spoons.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And the fish.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Right, and that was all Johnny, No, axe, that was
- 7:15Speaker 2: all he had read. That bush you're beating around is
- 7:18Speaker 2: getting pretty big. Well, Johnny, I don't know what you mean.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Well, I asked you.
- 7:22Speaker 2: About possible motive, and so far all you've done is
- 7:25Speaker 2: evade the question. Now why should I do that? Well,
- 7:28Speaker 2: that's what I want to find out. Well, now, Johnny,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you know of anyone who might have wanted mister Hobbs dead?
- 7:34Speaker 2: You say you know him pretty well and I did, yes, sir, Well, no, sir, no, sir,
- 7:39Speaker 2: I certainly don't. You're sure? Well Elmer, Well, he when
- 7:44Speaker 2: nobody could want to kill a fine man like him, Johnny,
- 7:47Speaker 2: he was one of my best friends. Yeah, at least
- 7:51Speaker 2: whatever he was here. I mean I never knew anything
- 7:54Speaker 2: about him in LA. I mean he was in business
- 7:56Speaker 2: back there, I understand. That's right where the man he
- 7:59Speaker 2: called Stu Men. Wait a minute, what is it, Johnny,
- 8:02Speaker 2: I'm going back to the office and called Ja Kessler again. Yes, sir,
- 8:05Speaker 2: Helmer was my best friend. Come on, come on up
- 8:08Speaker 2: to the office with me.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Buster, you can use the phone here on the dock, Johnny.
- 8:11Speaker 2: No, no, come on, Red, We'll see you later.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I'll be here, sir.
- 8:19Speaker 5: He looked like you just got hit with an idea, Johnny.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I'm afraid it isn't a very pretty one.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Oh what is it, Johnny?
- 8:27Speaker 3: The early fishermen come in here.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Oh yes, sir, mister Carson, and they picked up some
- 8:31Speaker 5: nice bass up above the power line crossing.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Dude, I was thinking of going up that way.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Yeah, well, good luck. Now what were you gonna say, Johnny?
- 8:41Speaker 2: We're Red and mister Hobbes such really good friends.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Well, we're always together when he came here. Of course,
- 8:48Speaker 5: they were always fighting like cats and dogs over some
- 8:51Speaker 5: silly thing or other, but didn't mean it. Oh no,
- 8:55Speaker 5: wait a minute, Johnny.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Why was Red alone when he found Hobb's body.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Yeah, and he brought it back here.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But now, look, there weren't any other boats up the lake.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Yeah there were, but Red was searching that particular part
- 9:07Speaker 5: of the shore alone.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But surely you don't think think Kessler told me something
- 9:10Speaker 2: about Hobb's insurance policy. But not quite enough, Johnny, listen,
- 9:14Speaker 2: come on, let's get to that phone.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Well. I don't you think you ought to call in
- 9:28Speaker 3: the police.
- 9:28Speaker 2: No, if you're right, that is no, let me handle
- 9:31Speaker 2: this alone. For the moment I listened, Jake, didn't you
- 9:34Speaker 2: tell me that the insurance claim was filed by one
- 9:37Speaker 2: of hobbs beneficiaries plural?
- 9:39Speaker 3: That's right, by his business partner in LA.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Who were the others?
- 9:43Speaker 3: Just one other? If you take time listen to listen,
- 9:45Speaker 3: you were saw fired up and I drove you out.
- 9:47Speaker 2: What is this other beneficiary?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Jake?
- 9:49Speaker 3: You're still sure Hobbes was murdered.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Huh, I'll bet on it.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And now you're looking for somebody with a motive.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Huh the beneficiary, Jake, Like I told.
- 9:57Speaker 3: You, one of them was his business partner, Jase George Manly.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And the other read.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Red yeah, red barret.
- 10:11Speaker 7: Act two of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 10:14Speaker 9: In the moment, our flag now numbers fifty stars, and
- 10:19Speaker 9: behind each star there stands yet another flag representing one
- 10:23Speaker 9: of the fifties states.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Illinois's state flag.
- 10:27Speaker 9: Uses many of the symbols of our nation's Great Seal.
- 10:30Speaker 9: The Eagle, the symbol of our national strength, rests on
- 10:34Speaker 9: a shield representing the states, indicating that the states and
- 10:38Speaker 9: the nation are bound together or immunity, there is strength.
- 10:43Speaker 9: The arrows in the eagles talon indicate military preparedness, and
- 10:47Speaker 9: in his beak is a scroll which reads State Sovereignty,
- 10:52Speaker 9: National Union, a reminder of the greatness of the State
- 10:56Speaker 9: of Illinois and its pride in being a member of
- 10:58Speaker 9: the United.
- 10:58Speaker 4: States of America.
- 11:01Speaker 9: Illinois state flag, the flag of the twenty first state
- 11:04Speaker 9: to enter the Union, was adopted on July sixth, nineteen,
- 11:08Speaker 9: one hundred and fifteen.
- 11:10Speaker 7: And now that too of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and
- 11:12Speaker 7: the Mohave Red Sequel.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Two people who I knew stood the game by the
- 11:21Speaker 2: death of ELM. Hobbs won his business partner, Chase Stuart
- 11:24Speaker 2: Manley in Los Angeles. The other Red Barrett, fishing guy
- 11:28Speaker 2: at Lake Mohave Resort, who said he'd found his body,
- 11:31Speaker 2: who professed to have been his best friend. I wanted,
- 11:34Speaker 2: I said as much to Buster Favors, who sat there
- 11:36Speaker 2: in the office of the resort.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Red Deer, thing like that. I won't believe it, Johnny.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But he's the one person who could have engineered the
- 11:43Speaker 2: whole thing busting.
- 11:44Speaker 5: But why then would he lead us to the place
- 11:46Speaker 5: where mister hobbs boat was sunk and find up the
- 11:49Speaker 5: factor was deliberately sunk and an attempt made to saint
- 11:52Speaker 5: Hobbs's body with it. Oh, there's a cover up to
- 11:54Speaker 5: make him look clean.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Ah n, Johnny, Well, the boat would have been found
- 11:57Speaker 2: in that cold sooner or later.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Anyway, I tell you you wrong. If you just suspect Red,
- 12:02Speaker 5: look of Hobb's business partners a beneficiary too, Why don't
- 12:05Speaker 5: you look him up?
- 12:06Speaker 2: I fully intend to unless Red did do it and
- 12:09Speaker 2: I can prove it. No, Johnny, let's go back to
- 12:11Speaker 2: the dock so I can talk to him again.
- 12:12Speaker 5: And see Buster.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I just oh, hello, Johnny, I suppose you've heard him?
- 12:18Speaker 10: Yes, Red told me you're quite short with murdered. Yeah,
- 12:21Speaker 10: I'm sorry, listen Buster.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Ham As manager of this resort, you know Red
- 12:26Speaker 2: pretty well.
- 12:27Speaker 10: I sometimes wonder That's what I came up here to
- 12:29Speaker 10: ask you about.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Buster. Huh did use the name? Skiding out of here? What?
- 12:34Speaker 5: We just left him down at the dot?
- 12:36Speaker 4: You mean you didn't see him tearing out of here
- 12:38Speaker 4: in the pickup truck a few minutes ago, A Red?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Where'd he go?
- 12:42Speaker 4: I don't know, but he certainly left in.
- 12:44Speaker 5: A hurry, Johnny, Yeah, no, I still can't believe it.
- 12:49Speaker 4: What are you boys talking about?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Nothing? I Ham is our car on here I can
- 12:53Speaker 2: use sure, take mine keys, thanks light Lee.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Buster.
- 12:59Speaker 10: I was poking around where Red kept his fishing tackle,
- 13:02Speaker 10: trying to find that riky Bard for me last week.
- 13:04Speaker 2: What did you find him?
- 13:07Speaker 4: I thought Buster might know?
- 13:08Speaker 10: And the old code got hold of that new spinning
- 13:10Speaker 10: outfit silent flex row what yeah, and the bran spanking.
- 13:14Speaker 2: New Mitchell reel.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Oh he is?
- 13:16Speaker 2: Oh now all right, ham Buster, you just sit tight.
- 13:20Speaker 2: If Red comes back here before I do. Him comes back, yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 2: say nothing to him about what we've learned. Just keep
- 13:25Speaker 2: him here and tell him, tell him I'll return to
- 13:27Speaker 2: talk with him later. Nothing else, John No, No, do
- 13:29Speaker 2: as I say, Bo, what's going on? I'll see you later.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Well, now, journey.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Red was one of Elma Hobb's beneficiaries. He was the
- 13:40Speaker 2: one who'd found the body. He had the fishing tackle
- 13:44Speaker 2: that had belonged to Hobbs, and when it was discovered
- 13:47Speaker 2: by Ham Pratt, he'd left.
- 13:48Speaker 5: In a hurry.
- 13:49Speaker 2: All pretty incriminate, which is not why I took off
- 13:52Speaker 2: in Ham's car west on seventy seven South on ninety five,
- 13:55Speaker 2: and west again on sixty six. I had him for
- 13:58Speaker 2: a buck, even for a sandwich in a coke and
- 13:59Speaker 2: bar store. I had him five pour eighty for a
- 14:02Speaker 2: tankful of gas with the sign of the flying Red Horse.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Then Westwood again, and always with an eye out for
- 14:07Speaker 2: Red in the old pickup drug. Finally, as the sun
- 14:10Speaker 2: was disappearing over the edge of the Pacific, I pulled
- 14:12Speaker 2: into Los Angeles. The real estate office of Manley and
- 14:15Speaker 2: Hobbs was closed. A directory at the nearest phone both
- 14:18Speaker 2: gave me j. Stewart Manley's home address thirteen oh eight
- 14:21Speaker 2: Pandora Avenue, in the residential section called Westwood. The neat
- 14:29Speaker 2: white stucco house was dark, the garage empty. I let
- 14:32Speaker 2: myself in through a back door by slipping the lock
- 14:34Speaker 2: with the aid of one of my business cards. It
- 14:36Speaker 2: was hard to see inside, but I didn't want to
- 14:39Speaker 2: turn on any lights. And that was a mistake because
- 14:44Speaker 2: as I quietly rounded a corner and started toward the den,
- 14:50Speaker 2: I guess wrong. Somebody was at home. Wasn't that den
- 14:54Speaker 2: behind the now closed door? And then somebody knew that
- 14:57Speaker 2: I was in the house. There was only one thing
- 14:59Speaker 2: to do to bow my way through. Well, mister Manley,
- 15:04Speaker 2: you're just you kill up him? Read eh, Johnny Dollar, Well,
- 15:20Speaker 2: it kind of kind of looks like I made a
- 15:22Speaker 2: mistaken Yeah, Red, the biggest mistake of your life, Act
- 15:39Speaker 2: three of your truly Johnny Dollar in a moment.
- 15:42Speaker 6: A question that has been asked many times is at
- 15:45Speaker 6: what age does a boy become a man? It isn't
- 15:48Speaker 6: when he reaches the age of twenty one, but when
- 15:51Speaker 6: the qualities of grit and determination within him make him
- 15:54Speaker 6: face up to the responsibilities of a job to be done,
- 15:57Speaker 6: no matter what the difficulties. On May twenty first, eighteen
- 16:01Speaker 6: sixty two, during the Civil War Battle at Corinth, Mississippi,
- 16:05Speaker 6: William H. Horsfall was serving as a drummer with Company
- 16:09Speaker 6: G of the first Kentucky Infantry. During the furious and
- 16:12Speaker 6: deadly engagement, he saw his captain fall wounded between the lines.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Although as a non combatant, Horsefall was supposed to stay
- 16:19Speaker 6: out of the range of fire, he rushed bravely forward
- 16:22Speaker 6: at the risk of his own life to aid his
- 16:23Speaker 6: wounded captain, ignoring the fact that they were in the
- 16:26Speaker 6: midst of a continuing and deadly hail of fire from
- 16:29Speaker 6: both sides. The courageous drummer dragged the wounded officer to
- 16:32Speaker 6: a place of safety, thereby saving his life. Later on,
- 16:36Speaker 6: Horsefall grabbed a gun and some ammunition and went into
- 16:39Speaker 6: the fight, but his commanding officer finally sent him to
- 16:42Speaker 6: the rear, recommended him for the Medal of Honor, and
- 16:45Speaker 6: gave him a furlough gallant. As the drummer's valorous actions
- 16:49Speaker 6: were the officer felt that fourteen year old William Horsfall
- 16:54Speaker 6: was still too young for battle. But Horsefall's personal code
- 16:59Speaker 6: had all ready he proved him a mad and.
- 17:02Speaker 7: Now act free of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and the
- 17:05Speaker 7: mohave Red sequel, you.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Know what common sense tells me? Read what Johnny, that
- 17:19Speaker 2: you and j. Stewart man they were in cohotes and
- 17:21Speaker 2: the murder of Elmer Hobbs. Oh no, so you can't
- 17:24Speaker 2: believe that you told us that Hobbs had a Sila
- 17:26Speaker 2: flex rod a Mitchell wheel in his boat. Yes, sure
- 17:29Speaker 2: he did, just like the refound him. Read among your
- 17:32Speaker 2: things back at the lake, or you found mine, Johnny,
- 17:36Speaker 2: That Elmer gave me the match his Look, look what
- 17:40Speaker 2: I found here in the man was closet This was
- 17:43Speaker 2: Elmer's rotten reel, Johnny, what all strung up with the
- 17:48Speaker 2: warble right spoon on it, just just the way he
- 17:50Speaker 2: fishd with it, and he could cast so accurate. You're
- 17:54Speaker 2: sure this was his. Here's his initials ride on the
- 17:57Speaker 2: butt and scratched on the reel too. E h.
- 18:02Speaker 4: If you'd have looked, you.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Have found my initials on the rod there at the lake.
- 18:06Speaker 2: But look, look here, Look what I found the corner
- 18:09Speaker 2: of this closet, all wrapped up like to hide it
- 18:13Speaker 2: the acts. And I'm no detective, Johnny, but just look
- 18:17Speaker 2: at these marks like it was used to hack in
- 18:19Speaker 2: some kind of thin metal the flotation tanks on that boat.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Maybe you are a detective, Red and a good one.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Why did you come tearing in here to la in
- 18:27Speaker 2: the hope, Johnny, i'd find these things. I thought from
- 18:30Speaker 2: the first that Manly might be the one Elmer never
- 18:33Speaker 2: did really trust him. He told me that many a time,
- 18:36Speaker 2: But you didn't accuse him. When I talked to you
- 18:38Speaker 2: at the lake, I wanted some prove Manly not only
- 18:41Speaker 2: get a hunk of Hobs insurance, but the share of
- 18:43Speaker 2: the business. That's right, sir, oh I pulled a little
- 18:48Speaker 2: trick on him too. What do you mean? Well, I
- 18:50Speaker 2: stopped along the way and I phoned him to make
- 18:52Speaker 2: sure that he wouldn't be here for a while. Well,
- 18:54Speaker 2: what did you tell him? I disguised my voice, Johnny,
- 18:57Speaker 2: real good, that voice of yours. I told him that
- 19:00Speaker 2: this was a friend. I said that I thought he
- 19:02Speaker 2: ought to know that you were working on the cave,
- 19:05Speaker 2: that if he'd left any evidence at Lake Mohave, he'd
- 19:08Speaker 2: better get there and steer you away from him, Red.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And that's the way I got him away from here
- 19:12Speaker 2: so I could find this stuff. But if he's gone
- 19:15Speaker 2: to Lake Mohammed, oh, I knew you could take care
- 19:17Speaker 2: of him. And if I did find these things like
- 19:19Speaker 2: I did, I was going to phone you there to
- 19:21Speaker 2: be ready for him. Well, and why did you attack
- 19:24Speaker 2: me when I came in here? Sorry, Johnny, but I
- 19:27Speaker 2: thought maybe he'd got wise and come back and maybe
- 19:30Speaker 2: recognize my voice after all. Exactly what happened?
- 19:33Speaker 5: Reddy?
- 19:33Speaker 2: Mister Manley, Sir, that's right, j Stewart Manley.
- 19:37Speaker 4: This is my wife, mister Deller.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Red.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Kill them, Stuart. They're burglars, don't you see. And we
- 19:44Speaker 4: caught them robbing.
- 19:45Speaker 2: The house all right, Mary, I suppose that means we
- 19:48Speaker 2: were right that you did kill your partner, Elmer Hobbs.
- 19:51Speaker 7: That stupid old man fishing all the time instead of
- 19:54Speaker 7: tending to the office taking all the money.
- 19:56Speaker 2: But now we'll have some money for a change own
- 19:59Speaker 2: the business.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Up.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I see you found old Elmer's things.
- 20:04Speaker 4: No surf, this fishing rod is here's not you?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Oh put it down. Pretty foolish here to bring that
- 20:10Speaker 2: stuff here, Manley, especially the acts. I'm sure any good
- 20:13Speaker 2: police lab will find traces of aluminum from the boat
- 20:15Speaker 2: on it. Kill him start they're robbins.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Their fingerprints will be all over.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Mary's right, your prowlers ransacking my house, and I can
- 20:23Speaker 2: see the bulls of your pistol. Dollar, So when he
- 20:26Speaker 2: caught in the land, up, hold my right to kill
- 20:27Speaker 2: you and self defense and dollar you go first.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Listen.
- 20:33Speaker 2: You think you can shoot as straight as I can
- 20:35Speaker 2: cast a fishing plug? Huh like this? Oh no, no,
- 20:47Speaker 2: get back, he says Manley. I'd hate to have to
- 20:49Speaker 2: sock a woman. You heard him, Yeah, as badly as
- 20:51Speaker 2: he heard him a horse.
- 20:52Speaker 10: Look that horrible fishing plug. The look to rip his handle.
- 20:56Speaker 10: But it's blazing redheaded old fool throwing those.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Jesus do it right.
- 21:04Speaker 2: There was a beautiful piece of casting. He almost tore
- 21:07Speaker 2: his hand off of that plug. Well, Johnny, it was
- 21:10Speaker 2: with Elmer's own rig. I think maybe he would have
- 21:14Speaker 2: liked that. I hope so. But you know what I
- 21:18Speaker 2: hope the most, Johnny, what read that the fishing, That
- 21:23Speaker 2: the fishing is real good up where Elmery is now
- 21:32Speaker 2: Manley and his wife, Yeah read it? Figured right the
- 21:36Speaker 2: morning of the day that Hobbs was killed. They'd rented
- 21:38Speaker 2: a boat out of Cottonwood, landing a few miles up
- 21:41Speaker 2: the lake, then ambushed him there in the big basin.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Bob Cold of Cottonwood had noticed the new rod and reel,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and they'd come back off the lake just before the
- 21:49Speaker 2: big storm. Had noticed the axe too when he wondered
- 21:52Speaker 2: about it. Now he knows so from here on in
- 21:56Speaker 2: it's aft to the Sheriff's office in the Courts thanks
- 22:00Speaker 2: to acount total including a return of hans car, a
- 22:02Speaker 2: few days of fishing in the trip back to Hartford
- 22:04Speaker 2: three hundred and seven dollars. Even yours, truly, Johnny.
- 22:08Speaker 7: Dollar, Our star will return in just a moment. Our
- 22:23Speaker 7: flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star there
- 22:27Speaker 7: stands yet another flag for each of the fifty states.
- 22:31Speaker 7: New Mexico's flag is an ancient zea sun symbol, a
- 22:35Speaker 7: red circle on a field of yellow, radiating from four points,
- 22:40Speaker 7: which we might indicate as north, east, south, and west
- 22:43Speaker 7: our four parallel lines. Four was a sacred number of Zia,
- 22:48Speaker 7: the number most often used by the giver of all
- 22:51Speaker 7: good gifts. The earth had four main directions, each with
- 22:56Speaker 7: its own gifts. The year had four seasons, each with
- 23:00Speaker 7: the different offering for mankind. The day had four faces sunrise, noontime, evening,
- 23:07Speaker 7: and night. Life had its four divisions childhood, youth, manhood,
- 23:13Speaker 7: and old age. Everything in life and nature was bound
- 23:17Speaker 7: together in a circle, the circle of life.
- 23:19Speaker 11: And love, without beginning and without end. And in this
- 23:24Speaker 11: great brotherhood of all things, man had four obligations. He
- 23:28Speaker 11: must develop a strong body, a clear mind, and a
- 23:32Speaker 11: pure spirit. Fourth, and most sacred, he must devote unselfishly, body, mind,
- 23:38Speaker 11: and spirit to the welfare of his people. From this
- 23:42Speaker 11: simple symbol, the Zia sun, we read the legend of
- 23:45Speaker 11: a wonderful philosophy. The flag's colors of flaming red and
- 23:50Speaker 11: golden orange represent the banners of Ferdinand and Isabella, which
- 23:54Speaker 11: were carried by Columbus across the Atlantic. New Mexico's state flag,
- 23:59Speaker 11: the flag of the forty seventh state to enter the Union,
- 24:02Speaker 11: was adopted on March nineteenth, nineteen twenty five. Now here's
- 24:07Speaker 11: our star to tell you about next week's story. Next week,
- 24:10Speaker 11: some of the funniest old characters I ever meet, and
- 24:13Speaker 11: a ten year old boy solves the case. Join us,
- 24:16Speaker 11: won't you yours truly Johnny Dollar?
- 24:23Speaker 7: Yours truly Johnny Dollar is stirrying. Bob Bailey originates in
- 24:26Speaker 7: Hollywood and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who
- 24:30Speaker 7: also wrote today's story. Heard in our cast where Virginia Gregg, Harley,
- 24:35Speaker 7: Bear fors Lewis, Barney Phillips, Alan Reed, and Russell Thorson.
- 24:39Speaker 7: Be sure to join us next week's same time in
- 24:41Speaker 7: station for another exciting story of Yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 24:44Speaker 12: This is Roy Rowan speaking. This is the United States
- 25:13Speaker 12: Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 26:39Speaker 2: This is Andrew J. Graham, author of the web surface
- 26:42Speaker 2: series Oh and a Man and his Wife.
- 26:45Speaker 11: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time radio.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Welcome Back, Red, wasn't a great candidate to become a
- 27:00Speaker 1: suspect in this case, but there wasn't much else, and
- 27:04Speaker 1: I have to admit I do like the fact that
- 27:07Speaker 1: he achieved one of the most unusual methods of defeating
- 27:13Speaker 1: the villain through fly casting. All right, well, now we
- 27:17Speaker 1: do turn to listener comments and feedback, and we have
- 27:23Speaker 1: this comment from over on Facebook, and the comment is
- 27:29Speaker 1: from Martha who says, I listened to Johnny Dollar for decades.
- 27:35Speaker 1: There was an old time radio on Wisconsin Public Radio,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and apparently Johnny Dollar is one of my favorites. Who
- 27:43Speaker 1: knew there was so much insurance fraud and how cheap
- 27:46Speaker 1: it was to get a cab to the Hartford Airport. Well,
- 27:49Speaker 1: remember I got a just for inflation, and then it's
- 27:54Speaker 1: not quite so cheap, particularly when the Charles Russell Johnny
- 27:58Speaker 1: Dollar was handing out or tips to everybody. That actually
- 28:02Speaker 1: was a lot of money.
- 28:03Speaker 11: Hi.
- 28:03Speaker 1: The New Mexico flag, by the way, which was mentioned
- 28:07Speaker 1: in this episode, is actually still the same today. In
- 28:10Speaker 1: a two thousand and one survey of the North American
- 28:17Speaker 1: Vexiological Association said that it had the best designed flag
- 28:23Speaker 1: of any US state, territory, or Canadian province. So definitely
- 28:31Speaker 1: a design that has some great support out there. All right, Well,
- 28:35Speaker 1: that will do it for today. If you do have
- 28:36Speaker 1: a comment, send it to me Box thirteen at great
