- 0:00Speaker 1: Great to have you with us on this Tuesday nights.
- 0:02Speaker 1: As of course, last night we had women's basketball, so
- 0:05Speaker 1: we could not do a coaches show here at Bear
- 0:07Speaker 1: Smokehouse Barbecue.
- 0:08Speaker 2: But we are tonight.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Bob Joyce, Adam Jaredino, Mike Kavanaugh with you here
- 0:12Speaker 1: on this Tuesday. And it's Connecticut Ice Week, which means
- 0:15Speaker 1: a trophy is on the line. Mister Kavanon, Just so
- 0:18Speaker 1: you know, I wore this especially for tonight. These are
- 0:21Speaker 1: one of Kyle Munsey's new designs, and I chose the
- 0:23Speaker 1: hockey one.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I bought the.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hockey for Christmas. Looks really nice and comic too. Do
- 0:28Speaker 1: you like the light blue?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Not really no, but well, I mean it's not really
- 0:32Speaker 3: a Yukon color. It looks like no North Carolina.
- 0:35Speaker 2: But these have this has a husky dog logan.
- 0:37Speaker 1: There's various other sports that you could purchase, sweatshirts and
- 0:41Speaker 1: t shirts, and they're all in light blue. But I
- 0:43Speaker 1: figured it's a hockey show. Let's let's wear a hoodie tonight.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Let's get hockey doned.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I think it looks great.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah all right, well just the color, yeah, correct?
- 0:52Speaker 1: And I got the nice under armour onto now that
- 0:55Speaker 1: we're done with that. Let's talk hockey here before we
- 0:58Speaker 1: get to Connecticut. Ice to you mass loll and Vermont
- 1:01Speaker 1: a couple of splits on one, losing at home, winning
- 1:06Speaker 1: it on the road at U mass Low, and then
- 1:08Speaker 1: the two game series with Vermont.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Boy, you warned us Vermont can skate. Boy. Were they
- 1:13Speaker 2: good Saturday? They they were all over it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: But to get a split probably, I'm sure disappointing in
- 1:19Speaker 1: a lot of ways.
- 1:19Speaker 2: But give Vermont a lot of credit. They played very
- 1:21Speaker 2: well on Saturday.
- 1:23Speaker 3: They did. I thought they played pretty well, and you know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: I just didn't think we played connected. You know, we
- 1:31Speaker 3: were not a five man unit or in sync. And
- 1:34Speaker 3: you know, talent alone isn't a panacea for unconnected play.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It just when you're out of sink, it's it's hard
- 1:44Speaker 3: to get into a rhythm where you're consistently, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 3: creating multiple shot shifts and wearing other teams down.
- 1:52Speaker 4: When a team comes out like that, and that first period,
- 1:56Speaker 4: Vermont bad Squardi one nothing, but they had the momentum.
- 1:59Speaker 4: How hard it in the middle of a period to
- 2:01Speaker 4: get your sea legs beneath you out of the gates
- 2:03Speaker 4: like that and try to fix it before hitting the intermission.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that was the issue. You know,
- 2:13Speaker 3: we have to learn to be aggressive with our effort,
- 2:17Speaker 3: but circumspect with our puck decisions. That was more of
- 2:22Speaker 3: the issue, I think. And when you don't manage the
- 2:26Speaker 3: puck that well and give them opportunities to have odd
- 2:30Speaker 3: man rushes, you just put yourself behind the eight ball.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And that's an area that we definitely have to clean up,
- 2:38Speaker 3: especially going into this weekend.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Right, you down one nothing after one.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Has Ada mentioned two quick goals early second, but Daniel
- 2:44Speaker 1: Sambuco came right back with an answer, and then later
- 2:47Speaker 1: on they get a breakaway to take the lead and
- 2:49Speaker 1: they wouldn't relinquish it. It just felt like in the
- 2:54Speaker 1: first period, and I mentioned this before we went on air,
- 2:56Speaker 1: it felt like seven on five sometimes when you had
- 2:58Speaker 1: the puck. In the Vermont end, they had everything covered,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I mean everything, and it just felt like there were
- 3:04Speaker 1: more players on the ice than you had. It just
- 3:06Speaker 1: had that feeling because the way they skated, in the
- 3:08Speaker 1: way they got after it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and again some of it was our puck decisions,
- 3:11Speaker 3: Like when a team they're a team that will pack
- 3:15Speaker 3: five guys low and if you kick it out to
- 3:17Speaker 3: the point, they'll front And what I mean by front
- 3:20Speaker 3: is they'll get in front of your guys. They're trying
- 3:22Speaker 3: to block the shot. They want two layers of guys
- 3:24Speaker 3: blocking shots. And when you try to shoot pucks through that,
- 3:29Speaker 3: you know it's very hard. And what happens is you
- 3:32Speaker 3: might get it by the first guy, but if you
- 3:33Speaker 3: don't get it by the second guy, then one they
- 3:37Speaker 3: have the puck. Two we're in a bad position because
- 3:39Speaker 3: we have guys behind them. So when the puck turns over,
- 3:43Speaker 3: that leads to again an odd man rush. But I
- 3:47Speaker 3: have to give you, know, our team a lot of
- 3:49Speaker 3: credit and our leaders on the team afterwards, they were
- 3:53Speaker 3: very magnanimous in defeat and took responsibility for a lot
- 3:59Speaker 3: of their play and puck decisions. And when you have
- 4:03Speaker 3: a team like that and they're not blaming others, uh,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and they're looking in the mirror and taking responsibility, uh,
- 4:10Speaker 3: I think that's when you can make real progress.
- 4:12Speaker 4: And we don't need to know the details. But does
- 4:14Speaker 4: that look like immediately following the game in front of
- 4:18Speaker 4: the team, does that look like one on one with you? Okay?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, so so you know every game win or lose.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I open it up to the to the team to
- 4:26Speaker 3: get their thoughts. I think it's important. And they were very,
- 4:30Speaker 3: like I said, honest with each other, and especially they
- 4:35Speaker 3: were pretty good self evaluators in that situation. And you know,
- 4:40Speaker 3: we've had two good practices this week.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They've had They had forty blocks on the weekend, twenty
- 4:45Speaker 1: eight alone on Saturday, and you talked about that.
- 4:47Speaker 2: During the week. Yeah, they do that really really well. Yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and their goaltending was really good. Power play looked decent weekend.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You know, I thought our special teams were pretty good
- 4:57Speaker 3: on the weekend. That's one area that I thought was
- 5:01Speaker 3: a positive. There weren't there weren't any power plays, I
- 5:04Speaker 3: don't think Saturday, yeah, right right, there was a four
- 5:07Speaker 3: on four, we had matching penalties in the first period,
- 5:09Speaker 3: and the matching penalty late in the game, and then
- 5:13Speaker 3: the night before. You know, I think we had four
- 5:15Speaker 3: power plays. They had two sou But I did like
- 5:18Speaker 3: our special.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Teams looking at that Saturday game. And we will talk
- 5:23Speaker 4: about better things because there have been other wins as
- 5:26Speaker 4: well along the way, But in that Saturday game, the
- 5:28Speaker 4: two goals came rather quickly, so I think if if
- 5:31Speaker 4: you were someone that just checked the box score, you
- 5:33Speaker 4: would say, okay, there were five minutes that went well,
- 5:36Speaker 4: what did you think when in the sixty minutes? What
- 5:40Speaker 4: percentage of that did you like what the team was doing?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Are you talking on Saturday?
- 5:46Speaker 2: Is Saturday?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 5:47Speaker 4: Cause you had the two goals coming out of that
- 5:49Speaker 4: second period.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah, we played pretty well there. And then you know,
- 5:53Speaker 3: you got to remember too, we put two goals in
- 5:56Speaker 3: our own net. I mean, you know, the first goal
- 6:00Speaker 3: went off, they shot it, Moose made the save, and
- 6:04Speaker 3: the rebound came out went off of Anthony and Inn
- 6:06Speaker 3: and which is unfortunate. And then the second goal was
- 6:11Speaker 3: one that kind of he made the save, it went
- 6:13Speaker 3: up high and Viking went to knock it away and
- 6:16Speaker 3: accidentally knocked it in the net. So and the third
- 6:20Speaker 3: one was a bad turnover, right, we gave him a breakaway.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But there were parts of the game I didn't mind that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: The third period was the one that kind of bothered
- 6:29Speaker 3: me a little bit because they played a great road game.
- 6:32Speaker 3: They didn't let us get to the net. They did
- 6:34Speaker 3: a nice job, and again, like I said earlier, we
- 6:37Speaker 3: just weren't connected on our for check and it was
- 6:40Speaker 3: one of those games too that I said, we just
- 6:42Speaker 3: didn't make any putts, Like we kept missing passes, pucks
- 6:45Speaker 3: were bobbling. It just sometimes you have those games.
- 6:49Speaker 4: That first goal that Vermont scored, it was a hard
- 6:52Speaker 4: blocker off to the sideboards by Tyler on the initial save.
- 6:58Speaker 4: That's good rebound when we talk about rebound control and goalies. Yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 4: I mean that's an intentional play where he's trying to
- 7:03Speaker 4: force that puck out of a dangerous spot and then
- 7:05Speaker 4: it just a broken play ensued and.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it hit, Yeah it hit. Now, there were some
- 7:09Speaker 3: things that went wrong on the play, but normally a
- 7:13Speaker 3: lot of times you survived that, yeah, you know, and
- 7:15Speaker 3: it was just unfortunate.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So yep, it happened sometimes it does. Just like you
- 7:20Speaker 2: mentioned bad putting day, that's right right.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Speaking of that, we will talk to Viking, Gustin sen
- 7:25Speaker 1: Iiberg who plays a little golf, and Jake Richard.
- 7:28Speaker 2: They'll be later on here in the Coaches Show.
- 7:30Speaker 1: We're live at bear Smokeous Barbaracue talking to Yukon Hockey.
- 7:33Speaker 1: We promise we will talk Connecticut ice as well, Yukon
- 7:36Speaker 1: and Io Friday night, the late game right here on
- 7:38Speaker 1: the Radio. We'll have both games on the weekend. This
- 7:40Speaker 1: is the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show and Learfield. We're back
- 7:42Speaker 1: in a minute.
