• 4:26
Speaker 1: Ok, see, now, if that's a real Marauder and it's clean, I would consider buying something like that.
• 4:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a collectability to that car.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: There is Not as a daily driver.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: It would be for cruisers, no, as a daily driver, really.
• 4:41

• 5:50
Speaker 1: You know the problem with these many times Is they've been gone through so many hands and hacked up so many times.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: And you can you can slap a paint job on anything and make it look good.
• 6:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, but you don't necessarily know what the modifications are that are done to it, and that's the scary part and or or you it looks like yeah.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: It looks like it's got a you know an R4 transmission in it, because that's what it looks like on the outside, but it's all been jimmied up and jacked with on the inside to give it some sort of performance thing.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: Everybody's about to fall out and put mud on it.
• 6:25

• 6:56
Speaker 2: Yes, 88 or old.
• 6:57
Speaker 2: Don could have entered the show.

• 10:35
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh is that not ugly?

Speaker 2: I found it that yeah, yeah, didn't know they lost it.
• 15:59
Speaker 1: See, you got up this morning thinking I'm gonna go and I'm gonna see those guys and you know we pulled that chain.
• 16:10
  Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 16:11
Speaker 1: So what are you doing today in retirement?
• 16:14
  Speaker 1: Nothing.
• 16:15
Speaker 4: Pretty much nothing I'm.
• 16:16
Speaker 4: I have an old car that I've been working on what about it.
• 16:19
  Speaker 4: It's a 1449 Ford Club coupe.
• 16:23
Speaker 4: No cool, yeah, flathead in it.
• 16:25
Speaker 1: So Well, I guess what?
• 16:28
Speaker 1: Since you live down here now, I guess Breeze like today wouldn't be bad, but the heat we've had, my gosh.
• 16:36
Speaker 4: It has been tough and you know.
• 16:37
Speaker 4: And again, if you have a flathead Ford, you don't want to be running it in 100 degree heat.
• 16:42
  Speaker 2: No, they don't.
• 16:42
Speaker 2: It runs for short periods.
• 16:45
  Speaker 4: They do overheat.
• 16:46
Speaker 2: Yeah there, is that yeah so I just so did you bring it out, or he's still working on it's?
• 16:52
Speaker 4: well, it's at the end of the street where I live.
• 16:55
Speaker 1: And how far was that?
• 16:56
Speaker 4: did you walk here?
• 16:57
Speaker 1: Actually, I took my golf cart thought the golf cart, yeah, and the police let you do that they did.
• 17:04
Speaker 4: But I joined a Early Ford VA Club of Houston, Okay, and so it's really been quite informative.
• 17:11
Speaker 4: Do you ever go to any of the meetings?
• 17:14
Speaker 4: I do yeah, I have to drive all the way into Houston, but it's been.
• 17:18
Speaker 4: You know it's great.
• 17:19
Speaker 4: Just a tons of information.
• 17:20
  Speaker 4: What?
• 17:21
Speaker 1: what have you learned about working on this car If you never had one before?
• 17:24
Speaker 1: Have you know, not a flathead now, and I mean, have you done any engine work on it?
• 17:30
  Speaker 4: Only superficial stuff.
• 17:32
Speaker 4: You know, I've changed out the the carburetor and the fuel pump and the thermostats and I I just put, I Just put electric windshield Wipers yeah, and the old vacuum one that quit working when you stepped on the gas exactly and I did a conversion 12 volt and Just cleaned up.
• 17:54
Speaker 4: I have a gutted it, put a new interior in it and so that was that did you do the upholstery yourself at the house.
• 18:00
  Speaker 2: What's that?
• 18:00
Speaker 2: You're doing the work at the house.
• 18:02
Speaker 2: I am oh good for you.
• 18:03
Speaker 2: Did you put your?
• 18:04
Speaker 1: own upholstery in it.
• 18:05
Speaker 1: I did, do you do tuck and roll, I can get you some business.
• 18:10
Speaker 4: Actually I had the seats done and I did all of the door panels.
• 18:18
  Speaker 2: Nice.
• 18:19
Speaker 4: Yeah so you know I really I can't.
• 18:21
Speaker 4: You know I did.
• 18:22
Speaker 4: I did the pleats on the door panels.
• 18:23
Speaker 4: With the way I did it I obviously I can't, so wear anything.
• 18:27
Speaker 4: So I got plastic lattice work and and covered the lattice pieces with upholstery and then bolting the gluodal moment on there it looks great.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: There you go, yeah, and and with that.
• 18:42
Speaker 1: When that doesn't work anymore, yeah, you can take it and has it skirting around.
• 18:48
  Speaker 4: Trailer a trailer.
• 18:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go, I can do that.
• 18:51
Speaker 1: And you know it's a business for you right there.
• 18:54
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm ready.
• 18:55
Speaker 1: What you're looking for is a business.
• 18:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I just want to work, yeah.
• 18:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been retired for quite a while else, so it's.
• 19:01
Speaker 1: I know, you know it's funny I thought I might see you down here and the last time I saw you actually working and I saw you many, many, many times at the Houston auto show, the new car show and and whenever he walked in I don't know what it is about this guy, I but he has a seat open next to him and there I sit.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: So he's trying to be all serious and everything and I'm shooting jokes and being funny.
• 19:29
  Speaker 1: He's taking notes.
• 19:31
Speaker 1: Which is a rarity and he's being all print reporter-ish.
• 19:38
Speaker 4: He records everything with his hand held recorder.
• 19:40
Speaker 4: I do and I always tried to avoid Don if I could, but I couldn't stick around.
• 19:45
Speaker 4: I was like you know.
• 19:50
Speaker 1: I know I'm like a bad piece of gum that gets stuck on your shoe.
• 19:56
Speaker 4: You are entertaining, though that's a you know Well.
• 19:59
Speaker 1: I don't know, but I don't do it intentionally, it just happens.
• 20:04
Speaker 4: Well, I miss interviews.
• 20:05
Speaker 4: I miss you know.
• 20:07
Speaker 4: I'm glad I got to meet a lot of the legends back in the day and a lot of them are gone now and I became pretty good friends with a lot of them.
• 20:14
Speaker 4: Did you get to meet Carol Shelby A lot?
• 20:16
Speaker 4: I knew her very well.
• 20:18
  Speaker 4: That's one I wish.
• 20:21
Speaker 4: I had, I had a cell phone number, in fact, where I could call him.
• 20:22
Speaker 4: And yeah, the first time that I met him was, I think, 1991, at Indy Christ was sending up an interview and I was thinking, man, this is great, I get to meet this legend.
• 20:37
Speaker 4: And so I walk into the sweet, the Christ of the sweet, and all I hear is you are people going out at the show, you know, blankety, blank, blank, blank, and they go back and forth.
• 20:49
Speaker 4: So it was quite the, you know, he just didn't cooperate very well.
• 20:54
Speaker 4: He was kind of contangorous, yes, but went on, and he drove me around Indy, and at the time I had one of those cell phones that looked like walkie talkie, you know, oh yeah, and I handed it to him and so we did a radio, oh yeah.
• 21:11
  Speaker 3: Oh, you did.
• 21:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, just take me around it around Indy?
• 21:13
Speaker 4: How cool is that?
• 21:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, but I got to ride with him a lot and interview him a lot and I've got a lot of stories.
• 21:20
Speaker 4: How about AJ Foyt?
• 21:21
Speaker 4: That's the strangest thing.
• 21:24
Speaker 4: I've seen him many times but I never really got to interviewing Lee Iacocca.
• 21:30
Speaker 4: I got to spend a lot of time with him.
• 21:32
  Speaker 4: How about DeLorean?
• 21:33
Speaker 4: No, craig Reed Love.
• 21:38
Speaker 4: Oh, wow, he just passed.
• 21:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, he did Just passed.
• 21:40
Speaker 4: It was really interesting.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: One of the most fascinating things you know he was telling me is that the most comfortable he was when he was just about to do a speed run.
• 21:53
Speaker 4: He can get away from all the media, all the hype, everything, all the sponsors and just concentrate.
• 21:59
Speaker 4: You focus in on that one thing and let the rest of the garbage go.
• 22:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, he said the weirdest thing when you get close to the speed of sound, you have the illusion that you're driving straight into the ground.
• 22:10
Speaker 4: And he said you have to combat that the whole time because it feels like you're going right into the ground.
• 22:16
Speaker 3: Really, yeah, never heard that.
• 22:17
Speaker 3: That is what you saw.
• 22:18
Speaker 3: Oh, you've never gone that fast.
• 22:21
  Speaker 3: I tried that.
• 22:21
Speaker 4: I never but so I got to do some speed runs during my years here.
• 22:28
Speaker 4: So I enjoyed that kind of stuff at Black Rock and then I went out and hung out with people at SoCal at Bonneville, and of course I did Texas Mile quite a few times.
• 22:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, we've had them on the show a couple of times.
• 22:44
  Speaker 4: They're a lot of fun.
• 22:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
• 22:47
Speaker 1: Well, I did not know this about you in the Texas Truck Rodeo.
• 22:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, I founded it.
• 22:54
  Speaker 1: He's the mastermind.
• 22:54
Speaker 1: So what prompted you to have that genius idea in the state of Texas?
• 23:00
Speaker 4: Well, all the other clubs, they were doing these car events, these car competitions among manufacturers, and I said how can we distinguish ourselves?
• 23:11
Speaker 4: Well, since Texas was this enormous truck market.
• 23:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, it still is yeah.
• 23:17
  Speaker 4: I said let's do a truck competition.
• 23:20
Speaker 1: So back then was it just trucks yeah, it was just truck SUVs.
• 23:24
Speaker 1: That was the beginning of the SUVs.
• 23:28
Speaker 4: Beginning of the SUVs.
• 23:28
Speaker 4: You remember what year that was?
• 23:30
  Speaker 4: The 94.
• 23:30
Speaker 4: Well, it was 93 for the 94.
• 23:34
  Speaker 1: Right modern year.
• 23:36
Speaker 4: And it was cool I mean, in this competition, what we did.
• 23:39
Speaker 4: We even had mud pits and we got to do mud races in manufacturers' car.
• 23:46
Speaker 4: How fun it was.
• 23:48
Speaker 4: A nightmare for the people who had to clean the cars.
• 23:51
Speaker 2: Clean the cars or the one who had to tow it out of the mud.
• 23:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, there was oil in the mud and all these rocks and stuff.
• 23:59
Speaker 4: They all chipped up, but it was a lot of fun.
• 24:01
Speaker 3: How bad Tadum, yeah, old ma'am.
• 24:06
Speaker 4: We also had Bob Bondarock this is a separate thing.
• 24:09
Speaker 4: Come out, you know.
• 24:11
Speaker 4: It was Carol Shelby's friend.
• 24:12
Speaker 4: I have a story about him too, and we had competitions between the Detroit on the riders and the Texas on the riders.
• 24:20
  Speaker 4: Oh my, gosh.
• 24:21
Speaker 4: So it was fun and I've got a good Shelby Bondarock story.
• 24:28
Speaker 4: But I had to clean it up a little bit.
• 24:31
Speaker 4: Well kind of yeah, kind of.
• 24:33
Speaker 4: Well, shelby was telling me Bondarock has a reputation for liking women.
• 24:39
Speaker 4: In fact I asked him in an interview.
• 24:42
Speaker 4: I said do you like racing or women?
• 24:45
  Speaker 4: Better?
• 24:45
Speaker 4: He said women, hands down.
• 24:47
Speaker 4: So that was his reputation.
• 24:49
Speaker 4: So back he and Shelby were racing in Mexico and Shelby fixed him up with this local girl.
• 24:57
Speaker 4: And you know what Bondarock had on his mind?
• 25:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, so according to Shelby, bondarock was also very cheap too, and so he went to pick up this girl and when she opened the door, her entire family was there, brother, sister and, of course, no-transcript.
• 25:23
Speaker 4: He ended up having to buy him dinner, oh Lord, yeah.
• 25:26
Speaker 4: So he was disappointed.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was he.
• 25:30
Speaker 1: I bet yeah, yeah, I can imagine how fun.
• 25:34
Speaker 1: What a great story.
• 25:35
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 25:35
Speaker 4: I was just thinking another Shelby story.
• 25:39
Speaker 4: He was telling me that back in I think it was 68, that Chevrolet was going to market this King of the Road brand and I think it was one of their performance cars, probably Corvette.
• 25:52
Speaker 4: And so he heard that he liked the King of the Road so he sent in his lawyers kind of overnight and stole that name from him and got his copyright attorney and everything.
• 26:06
Speaker 4: He stole the King of the Road name.
• 26:08
Speaker 2: For the KR, Corvette or Shelby.
• 26:09
  Speaker 4: Yeah, GT 500.
• 26:10
  Speaker 4: Kr.
• 26:11
  Speaker 2: KR.
• 26:13
Speaker 4: And so he was real proud of that, no doubt.
• 26:17
Speaker 1: I'm sure that it paid him well.
• 26:19
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it did.
• 26:21
  Speaker 4: He did OK.
• 26:23
Speaker 1: But how true is the Shelby versus Ferrari story.
• 26:28
  Speaker 1: The movie.
• 26:30
Speaker 4: I think a lot of it was true, and I mean I knew a few of those characters.
• 26:36
Speaker 4: I didn't know Ken Miles and those guys.
• 26:38
Speaker 4: So I actually learned a lot myself.
• 26:40
Speaker 2: But Bondurant was represented in the movie as well.
• 26:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, Bondurant was as one of the competitive drivers.
• 26:44
Speaker 4: Yes, he was represented in the movie and it was really fun getting to know those guys, so I got to spend 30 minutes with ICOCA.
• 26:57
Speaker 1: I want you to save that story Because I want you to tell that story on the other side of the break.
• 27:01
Speaker 1: All right, we do a break or your review.
• 27:04
Speaker 1: We're going to do a break.
• 27:05

• 27:25
Speaker 4: That's right, you've got a real guest, though.
• 27:27
Speaker 4: Listen over here, you know.
