Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 2nd of October. Great to have your company on
- 0:18this special day because today is or was actually Martin
- 0:23Gandhi's birthday. And so to celebrate his
- 0:26birthday, today is actually also the International Day of Non
- 0:30Violence. And we can certainly do with a
- 0:33dose of that in our world at the moment, can't we?
- 0:36Where if someone has an opinion that is different from ours, we
- 0:40can tolerate them, speak to them, and maybe even still get
- 0:45along even though we don't agree.
- 0:47What an amazing thought. So today we think of ways that
- 0:51we can go about the world peacefully with kindness and
- 0:55inclusion. Happy birthday Gandhi, but cakes
- 0:59and candles aside, today is a good day.
- 1:02We are going to read the second chapter of the book of Romans
- 1:07where Paul is going to start unwrapping all that he has to
- 1:12say about, oh, the conundrum of Jews and Gentiles.
- 1:16What do you need to do under Jewish law as a Christian?
- 1:20Do the Gentiles need to follow it?
- 1:22Should they be forced to? Oh, it's such a hard issue for
- 1:26these early Jewish Christians to wrap their heads around because
- 1:30their whole lives have been really bound by this law, which
- 1:33was the way that they were set apart for God.
- 1:36So you don't just give that up and walk away.
- 1:38That's that's kind of your identity.
- 1:40So Paul has got his work cut out for him as he introduces people
- 1:44and invites people into a new covenant where it's Jesus love
- 1:50and his sacrifice. It's done the work for us.
- 1:53So let us dive into this chapter together.
- 1:55Reading together Romans chapter 2.
- 2:08You may think you can condemn such people, but you were just
- 2:12as bad, and you have no excuse when you say they are wicked and
- 2:16should be punished. You are condemning yourself.
- 2:19For you who judge others do these very same things, and we
- 2:24who know God in His justice will punish anyone who can do such
- 2:29things. Since you judge others for doing
- 2:32these things, why do you think you can avoid God's judgement
- 2:36when you do the same things? Don't you see how wonderfully
- 2:40kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you?
- 2:45Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that His kindness
- 2:49is intended to turn you from your sin?
- 2:52But because you are stubborn and refused to turn from your sin,
- 2:56you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself.
- 3:00For a day of anger is coming when God's righteous judgement
- 3:03will be revealed. He will judge everyone according
- 3:07to what they have done. He will give eternal life to
- 3:10those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and
- 3:14honour and immortality that God offers.
- 3:18But He will pour out His anger and wrath on those who live for
- 3:21themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives
- 3:26of wickedness. There will be trouble and
- 3:29calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil for the
- 3:33Jew 1st and also for the Gentile.
- 3:36But there will be glory and honour and peace from God for
- 3:40all who do good, for the Jew 1st and also for the Gentile.
- 3:45For God does not show favouritism.
- 3:49When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed even though they
- 3:52never had God's written law. And the Jews who do have God's
- 3:58law will be judged by the law when they fail to obey it.
- 4:02For merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with God.
- 4:05It is obeying the law that makes us right in His sight.
- 4:09Even Gentiles who do not have God's written law show that they
- 4:14know His law when they instinctively obey it, even
- 4:17without having heard it. They demonstrate that God's law
- 4:20is written in their hearts for their own conscience and
- 4:25thoughts. Either accuse them or tell them
- 4:28they're doing right. And this is the message I
- 4:32proclaim, that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus,
- 4:37will judge everyone's secret life.
- 4:41You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God's law, and you
- 4:45boast about your special relationship with Him.
- 4:48You know what He wants. You know what is righteous
- 4:51because you have been taught His law.
- 4:54You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light
- 4:58for people who are lost in darkness.
- 5:00You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the
- 5:04ways of God, For you are certain that God's law gives you
- 5:08complete knowledge and truth. Well then, if you teach others,
- 5:13why don't you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal,
- 5:18but do you steal? You say it's wrong to commit
- 5:21adultery, but do you commit adultery?
- 5:24You can dare my idolatry, but do you use items stolen from Pagan
- 5:29temples? You are so proud of knowing the
- 5:33law, but you dishonour God by breaking it.
- 5:36No wonder the Scriptures say the Gentiles blasphemy the name of
- 5:40God because of you. The Jewish ceremony of
- 5:44circumcision has value only if you obey God's law.
- 5:48But if you don't obey God's law, you are no better off than an
- 5:52uncircumcised Gentile. And if the Gentiles obey God's
- 5:57law, won't God declare them to be his own people?
- 6:01In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God's law will condemn
- 6:06you. Jews who are circumcised and
- 6:09possess God's law but don't obey it.
- 6:13For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish
- 6:16parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of
- 6:19circumcision. No, a true Jew is 1 whose heart
- 6:24is right with God. And true circumcision is not
- 6:28merely obeying the letter of the law.
- 6:30Rather it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit.
- 6:36And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not
- 6:41from people. Oh Jesus, you want to see
- 6:53transformation on the inside? You want to see us transformed
- 6:59in the way that we love you, and when that changes and our whole
- 7:04hearts are bound before you, oh, well, then we'll just want to do
- 7:09what you would have us do. And Lord, may your kindness,
- 7:16your kindness shown to us, may that be the way that we show
- 7:20this love to others. Ah Lord, grow in us your
- 7:24kindness, and let that be the way that we convince others of
- 7:29your truth. You are a wonderful, wonderful
- 7:34Saviour, and the beginning of this chapter just speaks it so
- 7:37beautifully. You are wonderfully kind,
- 7:41tolerant and patient. Thank you.
- 7:47Thank you that this is who you are and this is how you come to
- 7:50us with your loving, kind heart. We just pray that that would
- 7:56change us from the inside out. Homeless bolus 100% so we can be
- 8:02more like you. We love you and we praise you
- 8:06and we pray all of this in your kind and loving name, Jesus,
- 8:10Amen.
