- 1:25I'm sure you are.
- 1:26All right.
- 1:27So this is Inspirations for Your Life, and
- 1:29ladies and gentlemen, the moment you start seeing
- 1:32it, season five, yes, I can't believe, ladies
- 1:37and gentlemen, that we are on show number
- 1:3917 and episode number six.
- 1:41The master topic for the week, in case
- 1:44you didn't know, is how people actually take
- 1:46control of their life.
- 1:48Hey, everyone.
- 1:48I'm John C.
- 1:49Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:53podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 1:56a passionate lifelong learner.
- 1:58And yes, guys, very grateful to now be
- 2:00a published author.
- 2:02This episode is about a shift that does
- 2:05not begin with action, but with awareness, kind
- 2:08of like my book.
- 2:09The moment you start seeing clearly, your interpretation
- 2:13of your life changes, and what once felt
- 2:16normal begins to reveal patterns you can no
- 2:19longer ignore.
- 2:20It's like once you see it, you can't
- 2:22unsee it.
- 2:23I think that's a very important thing for
- 2:25a lot of people to realize, that once
- 2:27you see something, you cannot unsee it.
- 2:31Very, very important concept, guys.
- 2:34Very important concept.
- 2:34Number one, let's dive right in.
- 2:37Awareness changes everything.
- 2:39I know.
- 2:40I wrote a book about it.
- 2:41Perception updates once reality is seen clearly.
- 2:45Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
- 2:48Number two, guys, patterns become visible, and repetition
- 2:53exposes structure in behavior.
- 2:57So there's a good thing about repetition, but
- 3:00it'll also tell you the truth about whether
- 3:02something is good or bad, because the truth
- 3:05will eventually come out.
- 3:07Number three, guys, normal starts to feel wrong.
- 3:11Acceptance turns into questioning, and then you're like,
- 3:16well, how do I move forward?
- 3:18Number four, guys, you notice repetition cycles that
- 3:23were ignored, how they become obvious, like they're
- 3:27this big flashing light in front of you.
- 3:32You can't ignore that, guys.
- 3:35You cannot ignore that.
- 3:38I think that's a very important thing for
- 3:42a lot of people to understand, is that
- 3:46you cannot ignore that.
- 3:49You might say to me, John, this makes
- 3:52no sense, but here's the truth, guys.
- 3:55It makes a lot of sense.
- 3:58It's just, how are you anticipating things right
- 4:03now?
- 4:03That's really the question that I have for
- 4:05you.
- 4:06Are you actually doing things, or are you
- 4:09just going through the motions, guys?
- 4:12Going through the motions is something that so
- 4:16many people do in life.
- 4:17They don't mean to do it, but they
- 4:19do it.
- 4:20And then they're not happy with themselves because
- 4:23they've been going through the motions.
- 4:26They haven't been an intentional person, intentional leader,
- 4:29and it's nothing to be ashamed about.
- 4:32It's just, you can change your life any
- 4:34time you want to change it.
- 4:36You don't have to wait until somebody says,
- 4:38hey, it's time to change your life.
- 4:40No, you don't need to do that, guys,
- 4:42but you do need to realize one thing.
- 4:44You need to realize that you have to
- 4:46change to become different, to become better.
- 4:50These are not things that are going to
- 4:52be obvious to a lot of people.
- 4:55I mean, that's probably the easiest thing I
- 4:57can tell you, is they're not going to
- 4:59be obvious to a lot of people, okay?
- 5:02And that's an important thing to definitely realize,
- 5:06that they're not going to be obvious.
- 5:08And when I say they're not going to
- 5:10be obvious, they're going to affect who you
- 5:13are as a person.
- 5:16They're going to affect who you are as
- 5:18a person.
- 5:19And I think that's a very important thing
- 5:23to note, you know, as a person, as
- 5:26a person.
- 5:28So number five, guys, habits reveal direction.
- 5:31Daily actions show future outcomes.
- 5:34Yes, guys, the daily actions are what shows
- 5:41the future outcomes.
- 5:42Not the small stuff, okay?
- 5:46But the little things that are even smaller
- 5:49than small, right?
- 5:51Those daily actions, I think, really can help
- 5:55empower people to become better versions of themselves.
- 6:00I think that's a very important thing that
- 6:04just some people don't, they don't get that
- 6:06sense.
- 6:09Number six, guys, systems become obvious.
- 6:12Hidden structures start to stand out.
- 6:15And you know, when a hidden structure stands
- 6:16out, it's like, wow, I didn't know I
- 6:18could do that.
- 6:19I didn't know I had that potential.
- 6:20I didn't know that I could see it
- 6:23that way.
- 6:24I'm just being honest with you guys, right?
- 6:27I didn't know that I could actually see
- 6:28it that way.
- 6:30So behavior makes sense and past choices connect
- 6:33us into clear results.
- 6:35But you know, our past is not something
- 6:37people always want to dive into.
- 6:38But sometimes our past can actually give us
- 6:40the answers that our future self's been waiting
- 6:43for.
- 6:44Number eight, guys, cause and effect becomes clear.
- 6:47Actions and outcomes link directly.
- 6:51Yes, I said directly, not indirectly.
- 6:53I think that's a key point, that they
- 6:56link directly.
- 6:57But they may not appear to link until
- 7:00that light bulb goes off in our head,
- 7:02until we've had that special, special moment.
- 7:06So I think that's an important thing.
- 7:08Number nine, guys, awareness creates tension.
- 7:12Realization challenges comfort every single day of our
- 7:15life.
- 7:15So we need to respect and honor that.
- 7:19Number 10, tension creates movement.
- 7:21Discomfort pushes change.
- 7:24Number 11, clarity replaces confusion.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:29You might say to me, John, how do
- 7:32we get clear about something when we're confused?
- 7:35One way is to ask questions.
- 7:39Another great way is to become aware of
- 7:44your surroundings, people, places, and things.
- 7:49Uncertainty begins to fade when we start to
- 7:53get clarity.
- 7:55That's important.
- 7:56Number 12, guys, routines come into question.
- 8:01Automatic actions are reconsidered.
- 8:05And that's another one that I think causes
- 8:07a lot of people's light bulbs to light
- 8:10up.
- 8:10Number 13, guys, old cycles weaken.
- 8:14Repeated patterns lose control.
- 8:18You might have heard of a phrase before,
- 8:21like the top that's spinning out of control.
- 8:26The ride has basically no ability to stay
- 8:33within its reins.
- 8:35So these things happen for a lot of
- 8:37different reasons, mechanical reasons, could be operator reasons.
- 8:40But when a pattern happens, it causes things
- 8:46to go awry.
- 8:48And if that pattern causes things to get
- 8:50too out of alignment, well, we get something
- 8:52called chaos, guys.
- 8:54We get something called chaos.
- 8:55Number 14, external influence becomes visible.
- 8:59You see what shaped you.
- 9:01You see what shaped you.
- 9:03Number 15, conditioning is revealed.
- 9:07Environments impact.
- 9:10Yes.
- 9:10And it becomes clear when you or the
- 9:14environment gets an impact.
- 9:16I think that's another important thing.
- 9:18We don't think that a tiny impact is
- 9:22going to make any difference in our life.
- 9:24The truth of the matter is, it will.
- 9:27It just might not be noticeable or obvious
- 9:30to you, you know, like that.
- 9:33But once you become aware of it, again,
- 9:38you can't become unaware of it.
- 9:41Number 16, guys, awareness introduces choice.
- 9:47Autopilot behavior stops.
- 9:49Now, you might say, John, is autopilot bad?
- 9:51Well, here's the thing.
- 9:53When you're running on so much autopilot that
- 9:55you can't even think about what your next
- 9:57step should be, yeah, autopilot's bad.
- 10:00If autopilot is helping you stay aligned and
- 10:03helping you achieve your goals and getting you
- 10:06to be intentional about yourself and others, then
- 10:09autopilot's good.
- 10:10So there's good parts to autopilot, and there's
- 10:12bad parts to autopilot.
- 10:13But it's something that there has to be,
- 10:16I want to say, this delicate balance around.
- 10:19And a lot of people say to me,
- 10:20oh, you know, I can't operate on autopilot.
- 10:22And there's nothing wrong, but it's something important.
- 10:30And it's important to be aware of this.
- 10:42I think awareness causes so many people to
- 10:47a lot of times second-guess themselves.
- 10:50It causes them to rethink their purpose, their
- 10:54core values.
- 10:55And there's nothing wrong with that, because if
- 10:58your core purpose and your core values were
- 11:00just kind of picked up, you know, like
- 11:04a grocery list, then they don't mean anything
- 11:07to you.
- 11:08They don't have anything that is part of
- 11:12your wiring.
- 11:14We don't say, I want to be something
- 11:16and then just grab it.
- 11:17We have to intentionally commit to that.
- 11:20Otherwise, it's just words.
- 11:22Nothing more than words, guys.
- 11:25Number 17, choice defines direction.
- 11:32Choice defines direction.
- 11:36Pretty powerful, guys.
- 11:39Begin shaping the outcomes now.
- 11:42Now, you might say to me, John, well,
- 11:42I don't make any choices.
- 11:45I had a hunch we were going to
- 11:45say that.
- 11:47So that's going to go back to a
- 11:49similar question that when somebody said to me,
- 11:50you know, we have to communicate, right?
- 11:53And I said to somebody, no communication is
- 11:55communication.
- 11:57Not acting is acting.
- 12:00So if you don't decide, if you don't
- 12:02make a choice, a choice is being.
- 12:04You're choosing not to choose, but you're still
- 12:07choosing something.
- 12:12You're using your freedom to decide, I don't
- 12:17want to do that.
- 12:21That's what choice is saying to you.
- 12:24You might say to you, well, I'm not
- 12:25ready to make that choice.
- 12:27You've already made the choice.
- 12:28You made the choice that says, hey, I
- 12:29had enough or I don't want to move
- 12:31forward.
- 12:33The how, the why, the when, that's not
- 12:34something I'm going to get into right now
- 12:35because every person is different.
- 12:37But choice is something that we are born
- 12:44with, but we don't necessarily execute it until
- 12:48we get older.
- 12:49We're afraid that if we make a choice,
- 12:54the outcome is something we may not like.
- 12:59So when we make a choice, we have
- 13:01to be responsible and we have to be
- 13:03accountable, ladies and gentlemen.
- 13:06Responsible and accountable.
- 13:09Not just responsible, right?
- 13:11I think that's a very important thing that
- 13:14many people, like they just don't get it
- 13:17for whatever reason.
- 13:19They don't get it.
- 13:20And these are things that I think will
- 13:22blow so many people out of the water.
- 13:26If you could think right now of one
- 13:30thing that you didn't get this entire, let's
- 13:33say, day, what would you say?
- 13:37Is it something that you just moved toward?
- 13:40Or is it something you said, you know
- 13:42what?
- 13:42I don't want to choose.
- 13:44And by you not choosing, guys, you've made
- 13:47a choice to choose.
- 13:49I know that sounds wacky, okay?
- 13:52Maybe you're sleeping in one day.
- 13:55Could be the weekend or what have you.
- 13:57Or maybe you're playing hooky from school and
- 13:59staying home.
- 14:01And when you're in bed, you made a
- 14:04choice not to get up.
- 14:07You made a choice not to go to
- 14:09school, not a good one.
- 14:10You made a choice not to go to
- 14:11work.
- 14:12You made a choice not to do something.
- 14:15And maybe that choice happened because your body
- 14:19was starting to feel burnout.
- 14:22Maybe it was getting tired.
- 14:24Maybe it said, hey, enough is enough.
- 14:25I got to stop.
- 14:29When your body gives you these signs, okay?
- 14:32They could be warning signs.
- 14:34They could be more severe, but they're just
- 14:36signs in the very beginning.
- 14:40They're things we got to be aware of.
- 14:42And when we're aware of them, guess what
- 14:44happens?
- 14:46We can change the course in our direction.
- 14:49I'm going to pair this to a global
- 14:51positioning satellite, GPS system in your car, right?
- 14:55If you make a wrong turn on a
- 14:58highway and now you're up a creek, well,
- 15:00not literally up a creek, but you get
- 15:01my point.
- 15:02You got to make another turn to either
- 15:04make a legal U-turn or you have
- 15:05to come around the block or you have
- 15:08to do something.
- 15:08So the car's job is programmed to keep
- 15:12you on the course.
- 15:15Maybe you're trying to get to a restaurant
- 15:17and you can't because, I don't know, you
- 15:20keep making wrong turns.
- 15:22Well, the car will keep patiently telling you
- 15:29to take this turn.
- 15:33And that could go on for minutes or
- 15:34hours.
- 15:36And you got to make the decision, all
- 15:37right, am I going to pay attention now
- 15:39and not miss this turn this time?
- 15:41Because I've done this three times.
- 15:42Am I going to like not miss this
- 15:44turn?
- 15:46A very interesting one where that's happened in
- 15:49the very beginning when I used to go
- 15:50to, well, the very first time for the
- 15:53new Newark Terminal A.
- 15:55In the beginning, it was like, okay, how
- 15:57do we get to the parking garage?
- 15:59It's not as simple as the other ones
- 16:01were.
- 16:01It's like on the other side and then
- 16:02you have to go to the right.
- 16:04And then when you go around, you have
- 16:05to realize that there's a garage entrance, but
- 16:07you don't go in the first garage entrance.
- 16:09You have to know to go to the
- 16:10second one.
- 16:11First one says Hertz or whatever.
- 16:12You have to go to the second one.
- 16:13Otherwise, you don't get into the parking garage.
- 16:16And guess what happens?
- 16:17You now have to go all the way
- 16:18around, back around the airport, back around the
- 16:21loop, back down around.
- 16:23So that's like another three or four minutes
- 16:24and you're back.
- 16:25So how many times are you gonna keep
- 16:27doing that?
- 16:29You're like, oh, I missed it again.
- 16:30I can't believe it.
- 16:32So you gotta be more conscious when you
- 16:36get to that term because it's a quick
- 16:38right and a quick left, let's just say.
- 16:40Number 18, guys, direction initiates action.
- 16:46It does.
- 16:47Clarity leads to movement.
- 16:49We've said that before.
- 16:51Direction leads to action and clarity leads to
- 16:53movement.
- 16:54When we know what to do, we do
- 16:56it.
- 16:58When we know what we need to do,
- 17:00we just do it.
- 17:03Number 19, guys, action produces outcomes.
- 17:09Now it might not be the outcome you
- 17:10want, but then you gotta take a different
- 17:12action.
- 17:14Execution, guys, creates the results.
- 17:17So action creates an outcome and execution will
- 17:21create the results.
- 17:22Hopefully it'll be the results you want.
- 17:25Hopefully.
- 17:26But if it's not, then you need to
- 17:27do like the GPS system does.
- 17:29You have to alter your course.
- 17:31You have to get back on track.
- 17:34Maybe it's a complete U-turn.
- 17:36Maybe it's a slight turn.
- 17:38But I think when we're aware that we're
- 17:40making the mistake or going in the wrong
- 17:42entrance for the garage or what have you,
- 17:45something goes off in my head that says,
- 17:46wait a minute.
- 17:47I gotta just be more attentive when I
- 17:50get to this spot after the traffic light.
- 17:52I need to know that I gotta go
- 17:54across the street.
- 17:55I gotta make the left and I gotta
- 17:56know that I gotta get over to the
- 17:58right lane.
- 17:59That I'm in that left lane, that far
- 18:01left lane.
- 18:01I can't get over right away and I
- 18:04might miss the entrance to the garage road.
- 18:10And now I'm gonna go past the airport,
- 18:12have to go around, come back and do
- 18:14the whole thing again.
- 18:15You're gonna get pretty annoyed with yourself if
- 18:17you keep doing that over and over again.
- 18:18So hopefully the second time you're like, okay,
- 18:21I did the second time, the third time.
- 18:23And now you're like, wait a minute, we're
- 18:24on the fourth time.
- 18:25All right, enough, enough, enough.
- 18:27I've gotta get this right.
- 18:29Like I gotta really pay attention now.
- 18:32Number 20 guys, outcomes reinforce understanding.
- 18:38Reality will always confirm awareness.
- 18:43You remember when I was at MSU the
- 18:45other day and I was looking at the
- 18:46people and I said, gee, how many people
- 18:48are intentionally doing something today?
- 18:52Intentionally aware.
- 18:54I think I counted like three or four
- 18:55people.
- 18:56Some people were playing on their phone.
- 18:58Some people were just walking like they didn't
- 19:00care, but they weren't being intentional about their
- 19:02life and about the things they were doing.
- 19:04There was a person on the skateboard.
- 19:05There was a group that was actually filming
- 19:08something for their final semester project.
- 19:12All right, there was somebody else there that
- 19:15was basically outside and they were painting.
- 19:21And these were all people doing intentional things.
- 19:24But out of let's say 700 people, there
- 19:26was only three or four people that were
- 19:28being intentional with their lives.
- 19:30That's pretty sad guys.
- 19:32Number 21, patterns become unforgettable.
- 19:35Recognition cannot be unseen.
- 19:38Once we see something, once we know something,
- 19:42we cannot forget about it.
- 19:46We know it.
- 19:48We know it.
- 19:50Number 22 guys, awareness compounds.
- 19:53Each insight that we derive strengthens the next
- 19:57thought, the next action, the next insight.
- 20:03And when these keep happening together, people call
- 20:05it epiphany, but really it means you're in
- 20:07alignment with the things that you want and
- 20:11they're easier to get.
- 20:12Number 23 guys, momentum forms.
- 20:16Realization accelerates the change.
- 20:17So momentum will form and the realization, the
- 20:20awareness that you have will accelerate the change
- 20:24that's gonna take place in your life.
- 20:26Number 24 guys, confidence emerges.
- 20:29Understanding builds trust in action.
- 20:33So your confidence will push up.
- 20:36The understanding builds trust in action.
- 20:40That's pretty cool, right?
- 20:43Have you ever thought about that before?
- 20:47What does that mean to you?
- 20:55What does that mean to you?
- 21:01I think it means that there's lots of
- 21:03choices.
- 21:12People have certain dreams, right?
- 21:15And dreams can have meaning.
- 21:22And I think these are important things to
- 21:24understand.
- 21:34And they may not be things that you're
- 21:36gonna necessarily grasp, again, one, two, three, they
- 21:41may not.
- 21:43When your confidence emerges, understanding of the situation
- 21:49will build the trust in the action that
- 21:52you're taking.
- 21:55Number 25 guys, change becomes intentional.
- 21:59Behavior starts to shift when that happens consciously.
- 22:03So when change is intentional, only when it's
- 22:05intentional, our behavior shifts.
- 22:08Let me say that again.
- 22:10When you make an intentional change, our behavior
- 22:16shifts.
- 22:16It's not just one thing you're doing because,
- 22:19oh, I'll just do this today.
- 22:21That's not usually what happens.
- 22:23Most people will build habits.
- 22:26They wanna build good habits.
- 22:28Now, doing the habit is automatic, right?
- 22:32But being intentional about why you're doing it
- 22:35is something that shouldn't be automatic.
- 22:38Number 26 guys, growth becomes visible.
- 22:42When this happens, progress becomes measurable.
- 22:45I've said this a million times before.
- 22:49When we can figure out something and we
- 22:54can measure it, we can analyze it and
- 22:57we can change it, but we have to
- 22:59be able to measure it.
- 23:00Whatever we can measure, we can change.
- 23:03Number 27 guys, your identity begins adjusting.
- 23:08Self-perception evolves when your identity begins adjusting.
- 23:12A lot of people have this big ego
- 23:14attached to their identity like, oh, I can't
- 23:16do that.
- 23:16Or, oh, this is the way, I'm the
- 23:18best at this.
- 23:19Your self-perception evolves.
- 23:24And even if you don't like what that
- 23:26perception is, you create it because of that
- 23:32awareness that you're having.
- 23:41That's really important to understand, guys.
- 23:44I think a lot of people today don't
- 23:46understand that, but your understanding of the identity,
- 23:51when it adjusts, your self-perception will evolve.
- 23:56Maybe not at the rate and speed that
- 23:58you want, but it will start to evolve.
- 24:00Number 28 guys, direction stabilizes clarity.
- 24:07Direction stabilizes clarity.
- 24:11How can I give you an example of
- 24:12this?
- 24:13So let's say you're baking a cake and
- 24:16you've never baked one before, but your friend's
- 24:19walking you through how to bake the cake.
- 24:21Either they're there with you or they're on
- 24:24FaceTime or just on an audio call.
- 24:30And they're trying to give you clarity on
- 24:35how to bake.
- 24:37And that will give you more direction.
- 24:43When they give you direction, you get, oh,
- 24:48I get that, now I know.
- 24:51That happens a lot.
- 24:53If you're a student, you'll have those moments
- 24:55and you're like, wait a minute, I didn't
- 24:57know that meant that.
- 24:59That's what that was all about?
- 25:01Yeah.
- 25:04So these little epiphanies, I'll call them, get
- 25:10our mind and body to say, wait a
- 25:12minute, maybe I shouldn't be going down that
- 25:14path or maybe I'm going down the right
- 25:16path.
- 25:19It helps you make a choice.
- 25:21But some people get stuck on a pathway
- 25:24and they don't want to change the pathway.
- 25:29They don't wanna change it because it might
- 25:32be what, guys, too uncomfortable.
- 25:37Maybe they see that they're not as good
- 25:39as they wanna be, but they don't really
- 25:43wanna put effort into change.
- 25:46And I just say, guys, that that is
- 25:47so very sad, like really, really sad.
- 25:54Number 29, guys, drift disappears when passive living
- 26:01ends.
- 26:03All right.
- 26:04So drift also happens during burnout.
- 26:08You get lack of apathy for things.
- 26:11You're not interested in stuff.
- 26:13And your mind drifting and your focus to
- 26:18things don't drift anymore.
- 26:20When you stop living a non-intentional life,
- 26:24like I was explaining to you about all
- 26:25those students the other day, walking around campus
- 26:27and just watching them walk around campus.
- 26:29Some were playing with their iPhones, some were
- 26:31just do all kinds of stuff, but they
- 26:34were not intentional.
- 26:37They were so buried in their music.
- 26:43Some were jogging, but they were so into
- 26:46it.
- 26:46Now, I can't say that the joggers who
- 26:48were like one or two joggers, they probably
- 26:49weren't intentional because they probably were focused on
- 26:52running.
- 26:53They were just running.
- 26:55But out of that, four or five people
- 26:57out of 100 at a university are not
- 27:01living an intentional life.
- 27:02So that means that when they go to
- 27:04class, are they intentional about their education?
- 27:07Were they just going through the motions so
- 27:08they can get a grade?
- 27:11And I think when people realize life's not
- 27:15about going through the motions, it's about celebrating
- 27:17the awareness.
- 27:19Number 30, guys, decisions take control.
- 27:22Life becomes intentionally directed only when the decisions
- 27:25take control.
- 27:27Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to know
- 27:29this.
- 27:29Change does not begin when you act.
- 27:31It begins when you see.
- 27:35And once you see clearly, staying the same
- 27:38becomes, well, impossible.
- 27:44The reason you don't change is because, A,
- 27:47you just don't want to, could be too
- 27:50much effort.
- 27:52It's usually the fact that you're so comfortable
- 27:54on this side of the fence that I
- 27:56want to do more work.
- 27:58So I'll just stay here.
- 28:00Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John Seymour, early serial
