Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Transport Coalition is calling for Wellington Council to rethink
- 0:04Speaker 1: the raised crossings that they're proposing for Thornton Key that
- 0:08Speaker 1: get this, five raised crossings in a one point seven
- 0:11Speaker 1: kilometer stretch of road. The coalition says that the crossings
- 0:15Speaker 1: can cause damage to large passenger vehicles and freight vehicles
- 0:18Speaker 1: and an increased risk for delays and disruptions for your
- 0:21Speaker 1: emergency services that's your ambulances and your fire service. Dom
- 0:24Speaker 1: Klasi is the interim CEO of Transporting New Zealand, they
- 0:28Speaker 1: look after road freight. He's with me this morning, doom.
- 0:30Speaker 1: How slow would a truck have to have to slow
- 0:34Speaker 1: down to to get over one of these things?
- 0:38Speaker 2: What city council is saying is they want vehicles to
- 0:41Speaker 2: slow down to about thirty kilometers an hour. So they're
- 0:44Speaker 2: actually going to put signs up to.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Say there right, and will trucks have to go even
- 0:48Speaker 1: slower than that? You know, big ones?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, particularly if they've got free job cargo on board.
- 0:54Speaker 2: You know, every time you go over a sharp bump
- 0:57Speaker 2: and you do need to slow down otherwise.
- 0:59Speaker 1: You can damage the ca So we're talking like five crossings,
- 1:02Speaker 1: five raised crossings you'd be going ten k's over these
- 1:06Speaker 1: crossings or something like that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: If you've got that would make it comfortable. And we're
- 1:11Speaker 2: just carrying freight. Think about all the people and buses
- 1:15Speaker 2: and ambulances and ambulances. You know, people could be on
- 1:19Speaker 2: their way to hospital and they're going over these bumps.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It's not very nice.
- 1:22Speaker 1: No, And also, I mean foreign emergency is said that
- 1:24Speaker 1: it could add fifty to sixty seconds delayed to their
- 1:27Speaker 1: response time, which may not sound like much, but in
- 1:30Speaker 1: a life or death situation, and you're tak into account
- 1:33Speaker 1: that their target is eight minutes to get to an.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Event absolutely end. I think it might be aware fans
- 1:41Speaker 2: they get involved in providing CPR when ambulance can't, So
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know that's even more critical.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Is this in terms of freight, because that's your area
- 1:50Speaker 1: of expertise. Is this a busy road?
- 1:54Speaker 2: It is? And look, if I understand the typically the
- 2:00Speaker 2: about eleven thousand vehicles going down there each day, and
- 2:03Speaker 2: I suspect about sixteen percent of those, so it's somewhere
- 2:06Speaker 2: around the eighteen hundred vehicles a day are freight vehicles
- 2:11Speaker 2: that would have to slow down five times, regardless of
- 2:13Speaker 2: whether they've got right of way through the site through
- 2:17Speaker 2: their signal.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Is the counsel listening to you, guys, Do you think
- 2:20Speaker 1: that there's a chance they will change things?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Well, we're spoked. Actually, the mayor wrote to our coalition
- 2:27Speaker 2: yesterday acknowledging that there needs to be a balance of
- 2:32Speaker 2: all factors when considering these sorts of thing. So we're
- 2:35Speaker 2: looking forward to that discussion.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Better late than never, i suppose, Dom. Thank you very
- 2:39Speaker 1: much for your time. That's Don Calesi who's with the
- 2:42Speaker 1: Transport Group, sorry, the coalition, i should say, group of
- 2:47Speaker 1: transport representatives who aren't basically saying this is going to
- 2:52Speaker 1: slow us down too much. He's in from CEO of
- 2:54Speaker 1: Transporting News.
