- 0:08In our previous episode, a young Vernon Howell
- 0:11enters the branch of Indian world as a passionate
- 0:12believer and tireless student. But beneath the
- 0:15devotion lies ambition, and a desire to lead.
- 0:18Now, in 1983, he's about to declare something
- 0:21that will alter the future of Mount Carmel forever.
- 0:24I'm Rick Welch, and this is Prophet of Fire.
- 0:28It starts with a revelation. Vernon Howell tells
- 0:32a small circle that God has chosen him. Not just
- 0:35to study scripture, not just to teach. but to
- 0:38prophecy. He claims to have received a divine
- 0:41gift, a direct conduit to the voice of God. There
- 0:44are no burning bushes, no thunderous signs from
- 0:46the sky, just howl, speaking with the authority
- 0:50of a prophet. It was a quiet but seismic shift.
- 0:54At the time, the branch Davidians are led by
- 0:56a woman named Lois Rodin. She's in her late 60s,
- 1:00the widow of Benjamin Rodin and a powerful figure
- 1:02in her own right. She believes God is both masculine
- 1:05and feminine and publishes spiritual materials
- 1:08out of Mount Carmel that reflect her unique theology.
- 1:11But Lois is aging, and there's no clear successor.
- 1:15Her son, George Rodin, believes it should be
- 1:17him. Vernon Howell, on the other hand, has a
- 1:20different view. He believes God is grooming him
- 1:23to take over. And in a move that would cause
- 1:25whispers and outrage alike, Howell begins a relationship
- 1:28with Lois, one that some say turns romantic.
- 1:31David Thibodeau, who would later survive the
- 1:34Waco siege, wrote in his memoir, A Place Called
- 1:36Waco, that he believed Howell and Lois were sexually
- 1:39involved. Whether that's true or not, one thing
- 1:42is certain. Lois gives Howell permission to preach
- 1:44his own message, a new gospel, one that he names
- 1:48The Serpent's Root. The Serpent's Root centers
- 1:51on Howell's interpretation of the Book of Revelation
- 1:53and End Times Prophecy. It speaks of an impending
- 1:56judgment, a chosen people, and a messiah. And
- 1:59soon Howell begins telling people that God wants
- 2:01him to father a child with Lois, a child destined
- 2:04to be the chosen one. This creates deep divisions.
- 2:08George Rodin, furious at Howell's growing influence
- 2:11and emboldened by his own lineage, sees Howell
- 2:13as a usurper, an opportunist trying to steal
- 2:16his mother's movement. The rivalry becomes more
- 2:19than theological, it becomes personal. But Howell
- 2:22keeps pushing forward. This was the true reason
- 2:25he married Rachel Jones. He claimed it was by
- 2:27divine revelation. but in reality, it was a political
- 2:30move. For a time, the marriage seems to ease
- 2:34tensions at Mount Carmel. There's a temporary
- 2:36peace between the Howell and Rodin factions,
- 2:39but that calm is short -lived. In 1983, a devastating
- 2:43fire sweeps through the Mount Carmel press and
- 2:45administration building, valued at half of a
- 2:47million dollars. George Rodin blames Howell,
- 2:51accusing him of arson, but Howell denies it emphatically.
- 2:55He claims no human hand lit that fire. It was
- 2:58divine judgment, he says, a sign from God that
- 3:01the old ways are being cleansed. The truth behind
- 3:04the fire is never determined, but it marks a
- 3:07turning point. Soon after, George Rodin drives
- 3:10Howell and his followers off the Mount Carmel
- 3:11property at gunpoint. They flee east to Palestine,
- 3:15Texas. There, Howell and roughly two dozen followers
- 3:18begin living in buses, tents, and makeshift shelters.
- 3:21For the next two years, this rugged encampment
- 3:23becomes their new spiritual headquarters. Life
- 3:26in Palestine is harsh. There's no running water,
- 3:29no electricity. They cook over campfires and
- 3:32sleep under thin tarps. But for Howell, this
- 3:35exile serves a purpose. He uses the time to consolidate
- 3:38power, expand his teachings, and most importantly,
- 3:41recruit. Howell begins recruiting across the
- 3:44globe. California, the United Kingdom, Israel,
- 3:48Australia. He writes long, intricate letters
- 3:51to potential followers. Some arrive curious,
- 3:54others desperate. Many stay. And soon, Hal has
- 3:58disciples from multiple continents, all believing
- 4:01he's been chosen by God. In 1985, Hal travels
- 4:05to Israel. He walks the ancient streets of Jerusalem,
- 4:08and while there, he experiences what he later
- 4:11describes as a vision. In it, he is told that
- 4:14he is Cyrus, the Persian king who liberated the
- 4:17Jews from Babylon, a biblical messiah, a king
- 4:20chosen not by men, but by God. Victor Hotev,
- 4:24the founder of the original Davidian movement,
- 4:26believed the Davidic Kingdom would one day be
- 4:28re -established in Israel. But Howe's vision
- 4:31redirects to prophecy. He now claims that the
- 4:34new Davidic Kingdom will rise not in the Middle
- 4:36East, but in the heart of Texas. By 1990, he
- 4:40declares Mount Carmel itself to be the prophetic
- 4:42center of God's end time plan. Waco, Texas is
- 4:46the New Jerusalem. The battle between good and
- 4:49evil, he warns, will begin right there. But before
- 4:52that prophecy can be fulfilled, there's still
- 4:54the matter of reclaiming Mount Carmel. Lois Rodin
- 4:57dies in 1986. George Rodin assumes control, and
- 5:01the divide between the two factions deepens.
- 5:03George remains in possession of the land, while
- 5:05Howell and his group remain exiled. Then comes
- 5:08one of the strangest and darkest episodes in
- 5:11Branch Davidian history. In 1987, George Rodin
- 5:14exhumed at least one corpse from the Mount Carmel
- 5:16Cemetery. He claimed he was moving the graveyard.
- 5:19Howell claimed Rodin was challenging him to a
- 5:21resurrection duel. Whoever could raise the dead
- 5:24would prove to be the true leader. Howell reports
- 5:26the incident to police, hoping to charge Rodin
- 5:29with illegal exhumation. But the authorities
- 5:31want proof. A photograph. A body. So Howell makes
- 5:34a bold decision. He and seven armed followers
- 5:36return to Mount Carmel to try and get that proof.
- 5:39They are caught. A gunfight breaks out between
- 5:41Howell's group and Rodin. When the sheriff arrives,
- 5:44Rodin is pinned down, wounded behind a tree.
- 5:47Howell and his followers are arrested and charged
- 5:49with attempted murder. At trial, Howell claims
- 5:52he was only trying to collect evidence of a crime.
- 5:54His followers are acquitted, and in Howell's
- 5:56case, the jury deadlocks. The judge declares
- 5:59a mistrial. Two years later, George Rodin's instability
- 6:02reaches a breaking point. In 1989, he murders
- 6:06a man named Wayman Dale Adair, striking him in
- 6:08the head with an axe after Adair claimed he was
- 6:11the true messiah. Rodin claims the man was sent
- 6:13by Howell to kill him. He is declared legally
- 6:16insane and committed to a psychiatric hospital
- 6:18in Big Spring, Texas. With Rodin gone and owing
- 6:21thousands in unpaid taxes on the Mount Carmel
- 6:23property, Howell sees an opportunity. He and
- 6:26his followers raise the money, buy back the land,
- 6:29and finally reclaim their spiritual home. But
- 6:31Mount Carmel is not as they left it. Tenants
- 6:34who had leased parts of the compound under Rodin's
- 6:36rule had installed a meth lab. Howell reports
- 6:39it to local police and demands it be cleared
- 6:41out. It's an ironic twist. especially considering
- 6:44future allegations that would link Mount Carmel
- 6:46to weapons and illegal activity. It's around
- 6:49this time that Vernon Howell begins to transform,
- 6:52at least in name. In May 1990, he files a petition
- 6:55in California Supreme Court to legally change
- 6:57his name. The reason listed? Publicity and business
- 7:01purposes. On August 28, 1990, the name change
- 7:05becomes official. Vernon Howell is now David
- 7:08Koresh. David, to symbolize his spiritual descent
- 7:12from King David, the Messianic bloodline, and
- 7:15Quresh, the Hebrew form of Cyrus the Great, the
- 7:18ancient king who delivered the Jews. In one calculated
- 7:22legal move, Quresh has rebranded himself as a
- 7:24prophetic figure ordained by both Jewish and
- 7:27Christian lineage, a messiah, a king, a servant
- 7:30of God. But not all of his visions are theological.
- 7:34Quresh becomes obsessed with the pop icon Madonna.
- 7:37According to multiple accounts, he tells his
- 7:39followers that God has spoken to him once again.
- 7:42The message? quote, I will give thee Madonna,
- 7:46end quote. The line between prophecy and delusion
- 7:49blurs. By now, Quresh is surrounded by devoted
- 7:52followers. He is their teacher, their prophet,
- 7:56their messiah. His influence is total, but his
- 7:59doctrine is becoming increasingly extreme and
- 8:03increasingly dangerous. In our next episode,
- 8:07Quresh tightens control over his followers, begins
- 8:10stockpiling weapons, and preaches of an impending
- 8:13apocalypse. But this time, the world will be
- 8:16watching. I'm Rick Welch and this is Prophet
- 8:20of Fire.
