- 0:04Our number 2, Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:07Network. Still to come, Scott Dockerman
- 0:09toward the bottom of the hour. Doc of course writes for The
- 0:12Athletic. He will join us.
- 0:14He put his first College Football Playoff rankings out at
- 0:17The Athletic first of the year. We'll recap that with Doc,
- 0:20etcetera. Mr. Monday Night will pay in a
- 0:22pay up a visit. He comes up about 10 minutes
- 0:26before 2:00. Jags getting 3 1/2 at home from
- 0:30the Chiefs. Bama Bob joins us to recap the
- 0:33weekend in college football and what a fun weekend it was.
- 0:36Just like we thought Bama, we knew it going in.
- 0:39Not maybe not the best on paper, but boy, it's going to live up
- 0:43to what it always does. Did we nailed it?
- 0:46Well, I think I think we have to start acknowledging that, you
- 0:49know, occasionally Trent is right.
- 0:52You know, we talked about these kind of men we can turn into, I
- 0:57mean, consequential is all you can say because I think, you
- 1:01know, Penn State and Texas lose huge And you know, I, you know,
- 1:05as we get further along, I want I want to turn, I want to flip
- 1:07it. I want to be host and I want, I
- 1:09want to ask you guys a question as we get going here.
- 1:11But but we can save that for later.
- 1:13All right, another big consequential for sure.
- 1:16Let's start in the Big 10, Trent, we talked about it
- 1:18earlier, just the, the, the unlikelihood of, of Pucci LA
- 1:22Mall schools beating Penn State, who was, as you said, mean if if
- 1:28it wasn't, you know, Texas or Ohio State, it was Penn State
- 1:32was going to be the national champion.
- 1:33They're not going to make the playoff the way they're trending
- 1:35right now. What a great story.
- 1:37Jerry Neuheisel, your thoughts on the Big 10?
- 1:39Yeah, we talked a lot about that game at the top and I'll leave a
- 1:41little something there on the bone for Bama on that front.
- 1:45What other take away? The Nebraska, Michigan State
- 1:48game was just one of the more odd games you're going to see.
- 1:50I'm sure you watched a lot of that one and it felt like
- 1:53everything I got back over there, it was just something
- 1:55weird happened. Charles, was he benched or did
- 1:57he get? He got.
- 1:59He got hurt because I saw the backup was in there.
- 2:01What's going on because he was playing so poorly?
- 2:04Now, I didn't see leading up because I was watching Alabama
- 2:07at the time and we must have flipped at the exact same time
- 2:09because we saw the backup on the field and then they cut the
- 2:11Charles on the bench. That Nebraska defense is not
- 2:14very good. They're OK in the back end.
- 2:17The the the. They're not basically and I, I
- 2:20don't know how they're this. Might have been one of their
- 2:21best games. Trend.
- 2:22That's the offensive line that I bet just Sips got problems with
- 2:25Thursday. Well, I mean the best offensive
- 2:27line of the Big 10 according to Stephen M Simple.
- 2:29Before the year they were brutal.
- 2:31Couldn't block you me. Nebraska's a bowl team.
- 2:34But that's it. That's it, That's it.
- 2:35There, there's nothing more to that team.
- 2:37Yes, there are seven win team of seven and five, maybe an 8 and
- 2:41four got up to. I mean, that punt block was a
- 2:44thing of beauty. Goes for a touchdown and then
- 2:47Michigan State comes running back and takes the lead.
- 2:49But Nebraska hangs on. All right, Bama, your thoughts
- 2:52on the Big 10? Well, obviously it starts in out
- 2:55in Lai mean, I don't think anybody saw that coming.
- 2:59It's the it's the worst loss of Franklin's career in a in a
- 3:03career that's had a lot of them. But you know, I saw somebody, I
- 3:08don't know, one of the pundits or something said, well, you
- 3:10know, the I guess the upside is he, you know, didn't hurt his
- 3:13record against top 10 opponents. You know, hopefully.
- 3:16I mean, it was just brutal. And, you know, he had to throw
- 3:21amongst all the other things, you know, he's trying to give,
- 3:23you know, UCLA credit and, you know, we weren't prepared.
- 3:26That's coaching. He did throw the travel thing.
- 3:29Like the next time I hear that from a Big 10 coach, I'm going
- 3:31to scream, hey, you're going east to West.
- 3:34OK. So it's not like you're kicking
- 3:35off at 9:00 in the morning your time B.
- 3:38Again, it's your stupid conference.
- 3:40So just deal with it. And if you can't, if these
- 3:43coaches can't figure out how to deal with it, I thought, and I
- 3:45know you watched your Broncos. Yes, I did.
- 3:49Yesterday and Sean Payton talked about, you know, how teams that
- 3:53go, you know, from the West Coast, they make an East Coast
- 3:56stop and then they go to London overseas and how they were like,
- 4:00I don't know, one in 15 in those games before they go to London.
- 4:03And he went through all this stuff and try to get his team
- 4:06prepared. Big team coaches are going to
- 4:08have to this is this is reality guys.
- 4:10You're going to make at least one trip a year, sometimes twice
- 4:14out to the West Coast and it's a 3 hour time change.
- 4:17Deal with it, figure it out, go out a day early, whatever you
- 4:20got to do. I don't know what it is, but you
- 4:22better figure it out because you keep, you know, in the same way,
- 4:26you know, coming the other way, you know, we heard Lincoln Riley
- 4:28going to Illinois. It's just the reality of your
- 4:30stupid conference. Yep, you better get rid, you
- 4:33better, you better learn how to deal with it.
- 4:34But just an absolutely horrible loss.
- 4:38You know, another team that went the other way was Washington.
- 4:40I thought that was a good win by them.
- 4:42I mean, they were down. It took a while to get going,
- 4:45but you know, they they they, I don't know if they salvage their
- 4:48season. I don't know what they're really
- 4:49going to get out of their season.
- 4:50But you know, good win for them. I was surprised at just
- 4:56absolutely no resistance from Minnesota and Columbus.
- 4:59I thought that game might be not closer, but oh, I guess closer
- 5:03than 42 to 3. But just kind of a domination,
- 5:07you know, you guys hit on Michigan State, Nebraska.
- 5:09That was, you know, I agree with you.
- 5:12Nebraska might win eight games. I really thought they had a
- 5:15chance to get into the playoff with that schedule.
- 5:18Illinois, you know, kind of, you know, did what they Purdue, he
- 5:23was good. And now, boy, they got a big one
- 5:25this week. You know, with the, with the
- 5:26Buckeyes coming into champagne, let's see if they can sell out
- 5:29that stadium. But yeah, Penn State, Penn
- 5:31State's it, I mean, that's the story.
- 5:33That's the story nationally. There's a lot of big stories,
- 5:36but Penn State by far, Texas and Penn State preseason #1 #2
- 5:42unranked in Week 6. Absolutely, Trenton.
- 5:45On to the Big 12 we go. BYU started it on Friday night.
- 5:50Did West Virginia get a late touchdown to cover?
- 5:52They did. That covered the number.
- 5:55Good God, isn't gambling fun? Made it and left and they punch
- 5:59it in and get the cover in that one.
- 6:02So we talked quite a bit earlier about Texas Tech.
- 6:05That win against Houston I thought was the most eye opening
- 6:07performance of the week for me just because I've said I wanted
- 6:10to see more. I want to see a complete effort
- 6:12out of Texas Tech. And maybe the story that goes
- 6:14along with it is what that defense is doing.
- 6:17I mean, nobody has been able to move the ball.
- 6:19Rodriguez is unbelievable. They brought in some dudes.
- 6:23There was so much talk about, you know what they did, but
- 6:25maybe that was the miss part of that.
- 6:26What this defense is doing right now.
- 6:29This is a contender. And if you have a defense, this
- 6:31isn't just Oh yeah, they can get to the playoff, maybe even win a
- 6:34game in the quarterfinal. This team, with this defense,
- 6:38maybe we we do have to adjust our expectations a little bit
- 6:41for the Red Raiders. Yeah, I'm with you, Avery
- 6:44Johnson. I mean, it had a nice game and
- 6:46he throws that just unforgivable pick.
- 6:49I thought K State had a chance to pick off Baylor.
- 6:51At least they covered. Colorado was in our TC rather
- 6:55was in a fight with Colorado. Alabama, the Big 10, Big, Big
- 6:5812. Pick a pardon.
- 7:00Yeah, Iowa State, I'm sure you guys have hit that one hard.
- 7:03That was that was a let down. I think Cincinnati's a good
- 7:06team, but and point good Lord, to beck this plastic on that one
- 7:11hit. I mean, I don't know how the kid
- 7:13got back. I don't know how he was allowed
- 7:14back in the game. I'm sure you guys have talked
- 7:16about his main story up there. I just saw the the highlight of
- 7:19that and I'm, I don't think I've seen a quarterback hit that.
- 7:22Hard. He gets his face mask tugged.
- 7:24He turns around to look up field and right in the chops.
- 7:27Bam. I mean, just awful.
- 7:30I'm glad he's OK. I hope he's OK.
- 7:32Came back in and played. I agree with you.
- 7:34I think Texas Tech's most underrated team in the country
- 7:36right now. I've saw some bowl projections,
- 7:39somebody, you know, put them out already that they have Texas
- 7:42Tech and Alabama in the 8-9 game.
- 7:44I won't know part of that. I'm going to tell you that
- 7:46because that that looks like a team.
- 7:48And you mentioned the defense. I mean, this isn't the old Air
- 7:51Raid, you know, where they're in a score 75.75, right?
- 7:55You know, 75 to 55 or whatever it is.
- 7:59They seem like they have they seem like they have some guys on
- 8:01defense. Houston again, I think they've
- 8:04got problems with I think maybe they started to show out in
- 8:08Corvallis and then have to come back and play a really good
- 8:11rested opponent. I just, you know, I think I
- 8:14talked about Friday that I would I would lay the points and and
- 8:17that certainly happened. I think, listen, I think the
- 8:19game of the year right right now, the game of the year in the
- 8:22Big 12 is, is 2 weeks from now when, when Texas Tech goes out
- 8:26to, to Tempe. I mean, that is, I think, I
- 8:29think Texas Tech is going to be really hard to keep out of that
- 8:32Big 12 championship game no matter what happens.
- 8:34Because you look at the rest of it, they've got Kansas at home.
- 8:38They got Oklahoma State at home. That's a terrible team.
- 8:40Kansas State is really disappointing.
- 8:43They do have BYU, but they get them at home.
- 8:45They get UCF at home and they go to West Virginia.
- 8:47I don't see a loss on that schedule outside of maybe the
- 8:49trip to Tempe. And if they lose that one, I
- 8:52don't think it's going to matter.
- 8:53They're going to be in the Big 12 championship game anyway.
- 8:55That is, this is looking more and more like a legit playoff
- 9:00contender, not only to get there, but to really do some
- 9:03damage and one of those teams that not many people out of the
- 9:06Big 10 or the SEC are going to want to see.
- 9:08So let me ask it this way to both of you guys.
- 9:11Could Texas Tech as the representative for the Big 12
- 9:15grab the four seed at the expense of an SEC?
- 9:18I mean, if we got Ohio State in, we've got Miami in, I think
- 9:23Oregon is in. Who's going to get the 4th by?
- 9:26Oh, I, I can't play it. There's way too much.
- 9:28Football, but as of right now, can you?
- 9:30Oh yeah, yeah, I think you can definitely make that.
- 9:32Argument. Cause who's unbeaten in the SEC?
- 9:34The Zoo. Ole Miss.
- 9:36Now if it came down to say 13 and O. 13 and O Texas.
- 9:42Tech and 12 and what Alabama? Well, it's Alabama.
- 9:46Come on, should. It be oh, absolutely.
- 9:48Come on, Going through the Big 12 in comparison to the SEC,
- 9:50even if the SEC might be down a little bit.
- 9:52Come on. What's Al?
- 9:53Who would Alabama have knocked off to get there?
- 9:56Obviously Mizzou This week, Oklahoma's got a Tennessee,
- 9:59Georgia, Tennessee. Oklahoma's good as 12 and.
- 10:01One LSU at Auburn 12 and then the SEC Championship game. 12
- 10:06and 1 Alabama. In that scenario, it's Alabama.
- 10:08You're right. Now we could get into some.
- 10:10Goofier things like Mizzou, who's played nobody and there's
- 10:1412 and. They they don't even bear.
- 10:15I think they get beat this week. I hope Ty Simpson hangs one on
- 10:18them. Anyways, we'll get to that.
- 10:19Anything else in the in the big Alabama?
- 10:22I think to answer your question, I think I think Texas Tech is
- 10:25going to have a hard time. I think they could get in over a
- 10:28loser of the of the SEC or the Big 10 championship in the top
- 10:32four seat. But because you mentioned.
- 10:34Oregon, Ohio State would play each other.
- 10:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 10:37So one of those, one of those are going to lose.
- 10:39And I think an undefeated tech team gets in over that.
- 10:42They're not going to have any. They're not going to have any
- 10:44great marquee wins. You know, like the win at Utah,
- 10:49the win at Arizona State are probably going to wind up being
- 10:51their two best. And there's going to be some
- 10:53debate whether they should get one of those buys or not.
- 10:55But again, I don't think they really care.
- 10:57I don't, I just don't get the impression that they care a lot.
- 11:00I think they'll go play anybody anywhere.
- 11:02And I'm, I'm telling you right now, there's a lot of teams in
- 11:05the SEC that do not want to see them in one of those, you know,
- 11:095 through 12 games, even if, even if they're hosting, you
- 11:12know, that's a team that right now I don't think anybody wants
- 11:14to see. I saw another projection for
- 11:16Alabama and Georgia Tech. Sign me up for that one please.
- 11:19Trent to the SEC. Alabama, That was a big boy
- 11:23victory, piling up nearly 500 yards against Vanderbilt.
- 11:26Defenses improved for Vandy. Pavia left a couple of plays
- 11:30there, but I think you can't just look at that.
- 11:32Yeah, the fumble really hurt. They could have jumped out to
- 11:34that big lead early still after that, that was just domination
- 11:38out of Simpson against a good Vanderbilt team, which is crazy
- 11:42to say. That's all right.
- 11:43Is that the team that lost to Georgia State a year ago?
- 11:45This Vanderbilt team is much improved from what they were.
- 11:48I don't even think the final score was indicative of how much
- 11:51Alabama dominated. This football, yeah, I'm with
- 11:54you. Obviously the Florida game.
- 11:55I'm sure Bam will touch on that one.
- 11:57Marcel Reed A&M is looks like he's a player.
- 12:01So so let's go there, Bama, because I think you touched it
- 12:05on Friday, just kind of giving us a heads up, just a house.
- 12:09How this Vanderbilt team, it was just kind of sneaks in and
- 12:13sneaks out of a Tuscaloosa previous years.
- 12:16Nobody even knows they were there other than the scores 1
- 12:18sided that this was that this felt like a big game.
- 12:21And of all schools on the other side of the field, it was Vandy.
- 12:25And there's a hell of a game. And Ty Simpson is an absolute
- 12:28legitimate Heisman contender. Yeah, he is.
- 12:31He's played great. I'm hoping he can sustain this
- 12:34level because it was they got a lot of big fish to fry,
- 12:38including this week at the zoo. And they come home and play
- 12:40Tennessee. They've still got LSU, they got
- 12:42Oklahoma. So there's a lot left for him, a
- 12:45lot of meat left on that bone. But this was a big game because
- 12:48again, Vandy, you know, the running back hits at 65 yards.
- 12:52It's, you know, 7 nothing. And he'll my Oh my God, here we
- 12:55go again. They did.
- 12:59I don't want to say they shut Pavia up because he played a
- 13:02decent game, but I talked about Friday, you got to make him beat
- 13:06you from the pocket and he couldn't do it.
- 13:08He had an interception. He had one.
- 13:11He had two turnovers in the red zone.
- 13:12OK, now he doesn't do that. We may be talking about an
- 13:15entirely different game. Alabama left some points on the
- 13:19field. Simpson threw his first
- 13:22interception, which I really can't put on him because for
- 13:25some reason on 4th down and one when you have Kaden Proctor that
- 13:28you can hand the ball to or uses a fullback, we're going to
- 13:31decide to throw a pass, you know, and being a creative and
- 13:34it's one of those resume builders that these stupid
- 13:36coaches try to do sometimes and that so that was a pick.
- 13:40He also had to he took a sack 1st and goal with the 10.
- 13:43He took like a 12 yard sack cost him points potentially.
- 13:46But that said, he's got some real weapons out there.
- 13:49And I don't think that is really, I don't think that's
- 13:53being talked about enough. We all know about Ryan Williams,
- 13:55but Jeremy Bernard is, is his best receiver.
- 13:59He's there so far this year. I know, you know, Williams had
- 14:01more yards this week. Isaiah Hortons kind of emerging
- 14:05as a, as a true #3 and Jim Miller, you know, finally on the
- 14:09ground, you know, 136 yards that he, you know, he had that late
- 14:13talk about your, your bad beats. He had the I think he scored
- 14:16with like 17 seconds left to make the margin 16, which is a
- 14:21cover. Yeah, because of the 12 1/2.
- 14:23But listen, it was all around a really good game.
- 14:27I don't, I won't say it, salvage their season, but it it
- 14:30certainly extended their season in terms of, you know, what they
- 14:34can do. They've got a really tough
- 14:35four-game gauntlet. They've already beat Georgia.
- 14:37They just beat Alabama. I'm sorry, Vanderbilt, we talked
- 14:40about they go to Mizzou this week, who's coming off a by and
- 14:43then they have Tennessee. So there's a they're halfway
- 14:45through it, if you will. But the defense, I think
- 14:48shutting them out in the second-half was big, able to run
- 14:52the ball was big. We'll see if they can sustain
- 14:55it. Missouri is another physical
- 14:56team coming in off of a bye week.
- 14:59That's an 11. They play nobody though, have
- 15:01they I. Mean they haven't Kansas, maybe
- 15:04South Carolina. They haven't left Columbia.
- 15:06Candace, I told you this season, the weirdest schedule I've ever
- 15:10seen, right? They've had five home games a
- 15:12bye week and they got another home game.
- 15:15I've just I've never seen a team not leave your and there's no
- 15:18neutral site. This is just all in Columbia.
- 15:20They don't leave even till mid-october when they go to
- 15:22Auburn. But again, big win for de Boer.
- 15:26I think there were so many doubters, myself included after
- 15:29that Florida State game. Happy for Billy Napier.
- 15:32I mean, that was that was. Happy for Lagway.
- 15:36Happy. For Lagway, he the crowd was
- 15:39into it. And I was glad to see that
- 15:40because what this tells you is everything gone wrong.
- 15:43They haven't quit, OK? And that that to me.
- 15:46Back-to-back years. That their schedule does.
- 15:49I can't, I keep harping on it. I can't adequately convey how
- 15:54tough their schedule has been, not only in the conference, but
- 15:58when you play South Florida, Miami and Florida State out of
- 16:02conference. That is ridiculous how good
- 16:04they've been. And I know they're Florida and
- 16:06they should, you know, win 8910 games, whatever it is, but they
- 16:09they they still fight for this guy.
- 16:11He's made his own bonehead decisions.
- 16:13You know, clock management, it comes into question a lot.
- 16:16He's stuck with Lagway. He rewarded him this week.
- 16:18He outplayed Arch Manning and and I think we're starting to
- 16:22see Manning had some good moments, but I think we're
- 16:25starting to see that maybe we just kind of and myself
- 16:29included, maybe over hyped him a little bit because of the last
- 16:31thing. This is not Peyton or Eli here.
- 16:34He's still got a lot of learning to do so happy for that Ami
- 16:38think really good win against Mississippi State kind of the
- 16:43way late you know it was it was 7 to 3 at half time they kind of
- 16:46ran away from him late but. Yeah, I went over that game on
- 16:49the SEC Network when it was 73, thinking that's be a good game.
- 16:53It wasn't. Yeah, it wasn't.
- 16:55No, it was boring. I mean, a lot of it was, but
- 16:59yeah, I mean, I don't know where we're going to go in the SEC.
- 17:02And, you know, I know we got the ACC to cover, too.
- 17:05But I guess my thing is, is like, you've got Notre Dame,
- 17:10Penn State, Texas and FSU all with two losses, right?
- 17:14Do any of them make the playoff? Probably.
- 17:16Notre Dame. You think so?
- 17:19I mean, yeah, half. I mean, Penn State could.
- 17:22Penn State's got Indiana, Ohio State, if they somehow magically
- 17:25beat them, they're going to be in it.
- 17:27You know, Texas has only got one loss in the SCC.
- 17:30I think Florida State's in trouble because I don't think
- 17:32they're making the ACC championship game.
- 17:34They've got 16 teams ahead of them, so I don't know how
- 17:36they're going to make it in there.
- 17:38And Notre Dame I don't think deserve, I mean, but crazy you
- 17:42know, 4 blue bloods could all be done after this week.
- 17:44Wild. But let's take a quick look at
- 17:46the ACC trend. I I can't believe I'm wrong.
- 17:49I was on Belichick. I thought this guy's gonna.
- 17:52He's Bell Freaking Belichick. Full circle.
- 17:54Trent was right on this one too. We.
- 17:57Should have saved that one for next week.
- 17:58When you when you when you needed one.
- 18:00But you're right. Yeah, you were.
- 18:01I look at Miami to dominate in that fact now.
- 18:06Did it get hairy at the end? A little.
- 18:07Bit it did, yeah. And that's that's where I go
- 18:11with Mario, with Cristobal, can they win a national championship
- 18:14with him on the sideline? They look really good.
- 18:16They're really talented, yeah, but to win likely 3 consecutive
- 18:20games against good opponents with him on the sideline, that
- 18:24that's my hang up. Fair or unfair, that's where I
- 18:27am with Penn. State get to the championship.
- 18:29God no. Somebody's got to win.
- 18:32It's give me a dark no, those guys.
- 18:35Are no, I think they're done. I'm just trying to find a coach
- 18:37that's overrated and May. Hand And that's my problem with
- 18:40Miami. It's not the talent.
- 18:42Carson Beck. Speaking of wrong, I was dead
- 18:43wrong. He's been playing at a high
- 18:47level, but it's just the guy at the sideline that leaves me
- 18:50concerned. So I go to bed on Friday night.
- 18:53It was a Friday night. Whatever.
- 18:54No, it's Saturday night. The Cal Duke game.
- 18:56Oh, yeah, it's 21. Seven Cal's marching in.
- 18:58They're going in again. Oh, this thing's over because I
- 19:01used him in our little pic contest.
- 19:03I wake up my log 45 to 21. My God.
- 19:07So what happened? Somebody had to be watching
- 19:09that. Game when he got hot.
- 19:10Did he He can play a little Bama.
- 19:12Your thoughts on the ACC? Yeah, I agree with you on
- 19:16Belichick. I I was never on board with
- 19:18that. I just think that the last I
- 19:20think he took the job. I don't I don't know why he took
- 19:22the job and then all the Jordan Hudson crap floating around
- 19:26there. It's just weird.
- 19:27It just seems like a guy with a not even a mid life, like a late
- 19:30life crisis. Whatever is going on with him,
- 19:33the Patriots yesterday just or last night proved that they're
- 19:36much better without him. You know, he he definitely lost
- 19:40his fastball. I listen, I think Miami, I do
- 19:42think they're legit and I think it's because of Beck.
- 19:45I understand the hesitation about Cristobal and I get it.
- 19:49Was it the Georgia Tech game a couple years ago where he just
- 19:51absolutely blew that game? I can't remember what the
- 19:53situation was clock management somehow.
- 19:56But you know, again, you know, they get outscored 19 to nothing
- 19:59in the fourth quarter. You get Florida State credit for
- 20:02coming back. I think Miami's defense is
- 20:04legit. I mean, they, they've got guys,
- 20:07you know, in that Warren Sapp, Benny Blade, Sean Taylor, I
- 20:11mean, they've just, they've got some defenders.
- 20:13On that team. And I think they're just, I
- 20:16think they're going to be a pain the rest of the year.
- 20:19And that's another team. I think they're the.
- 20:20I think they're far and away the best team in the ACC.
- 20:23Can they, you know, as Trent always says, that crazy
- 20:26conference. Can they can they stub their
- 20:28toe? They can.
- 20:29They've got Louisville and Stanford.
- 20:31You wouldn't think either one of those games they do have to go
- 20:33to they got to go to SMU. Yeah, maybe, I don't know,
- 20:38Syracuse, NC State, at Virginia Tech, at PIT.
- 20:42I don't see a loss on there. I mean, maybe the SMU if you
- 20:44want to get to it, but there's no Clemson.
- 20:47They just beat Florida State. So I listen, I think they're I
- 20:50think they're back. It would be an upset to me.
- 20:52It'll be it'll be you'll be an upset if they don't go
- 20:55undefeated and make it to the ACC championship game.
- 20:58They could be ranked number one by that point, depending on what
- 21:00happens with Ohio State. But I think they're legit.
- 21:03I think Florida State, I mean, are they done probably because I
- 21:08don't think they're going to get in at large.
- 21:10I don't think they got enough left.
- 21:11The Alabama winds going to look good.
- 21:13But it's also early. So I don't know.
- 21:17I don't know where they go, but got to be disappointing for them
- 21:20to not play well. Cassianos, you know, turned it
- 21:22over twice. We talked about couldn't do
- 21:24that, that that played clean. I still think he in a big spot.
- 21:28I know you don't trust Crystal Ball.
- 21:29I don't trust him necessarily to run through three nationally
- 21:33ranked opponents. But right now they they are back
- 21:36as of right now. And I would be it will be a
- 21:38major upset if they don't finish 12 enough.
- 21:40Ben, we'll talk to you on Friday, brother.
- 21:41Thank you. Yep, take care always.
- 21:44Thanks. Good to talk to you, Ben, Bob,
- 21:45Trenton. I recap on the weekend in
- 21:47college football. Scott Document is next, but

- 22:06More opportunities coming up throughout the afternoon on Off
- 22:10the Bench with Sean and Lucas. Miller and Condo will be joined
- 22:12by Scott Dockerman. Next, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:15Network. I'm Mory Congon welcome back
- 22:23just past 130 on a Monday Mr. Monday night still to come.
- 22:28We'll get to that right now. Scott Dockerman joins us He
- 22:32writes for the athletic his bowl his playoff projections first
- 22:36ones of the year been post we'll get into that with doc big 10
- 22:38questions as well. But Doc right off the shoot I
- 22:41promised one of your viewers slash listeners out in eastern
- 22:46Iowa. You do Monday night on on Iowa
- 22:48live on KCRG and was wondering if going to be on tonight, He
- 22:52says it's yours. Favorite part of that show?
- 22:54Will you be on TV tonight, Doc? Yes, I will.
- 22:58I didn't go 2 weeks ago when I was still in Indiana and so I I
- 23:01did hear from it from people. But yes, I'm planning to be on
- 23:04the show tonight. Yeah, you let him down because
- 23:06that's exactly what he said. So he'll be glad to know you'll
- 23:09be tuning in by literally. That's pretty cool place that
- 23:11you do it from. I saw the rooftop shot from last
- 23:14week, so pretty cool. But anyways, let's get into your
- 23:17your column from yesterday at the Athletic when you put out
- 23:20your first playoff projections. I'm sure it was well received,
- 23:24as those things always are. It's unbelievable to me, Doc,
- 23:27what you put up with. But it comes with the territory,
- 23:30I guess. What was the most difficult
- 23:32thing, Doc, when you looked at the the bracket and how it came
- 23:35together, what team or what school maybe did you go back and
- 23:39forth with slotting them one place and then having it to
- 23:42change or did it just all fall into place this week?
- 23:46It wasn't that difficult this week.
- 23:48I think the first week was a little more difficult because
- 23:51you had teams like Penn State and Texas who were still kind of
- 23:54hovering there. And then after this week they're
- 23:57they're not going to be making any more appearances for a
- 23:59while. It's the very least.
- 24:01I think the SEC log jam is just makes it very, very difficult
- 24:05right now because you've got a collection of teams that are
- 24:08undefeated and you're not sure if they're the best ones.
- 24:11And then you've got a bunch of one loss teams that you think
- 24:13are pretty good, but you know, I've already got a defeat and,
- 24:16and so there's like 8 teams that you can throw in there from the
- 24:19SEC and then until it goes to 16 teams, you really can't do that.
- 24:23So I, you know, I'm trying to figure out which ones are most
- 24:27valuable. I left out in the zoo and in
- 24:29Tennessee. Those were challenges.
- 24:31And then probably the one though that I really wanted to kind of
- 24:34get in there and I didn't quite get, but I will at another time
- 24:37probably. Is Georgia Tech undefeated?
- 24:40They played pretty well. I think they've got a chance to,
- 24:43to get in there. They've got a decent schedule
- 24:45too. But but you know, and then
- 24:48there's a couple I think BYU is worthy of mention.
- 24:51And but you know, in the Big 10 right now, it's, it's really for
- 24:54me, it's they're, they're 3 clear teams and I don't think
- 24:57anybody else gets into the top 12.
- 24:58So we could see how the season progresses.
- 25:01But it's, you know, there's a clear line there for me.
- 25:05You have 6 SEC teams currently in the bracket.
- 25:08When we get to the end of the season, fast forwarding a little
- 25:10bit, is there a realistic path for that actually to happen?
- 25:13Or were there ultimately be too much carnage that, you know,
- 25:16we're kind of picking over a bunch of nine and three type of
- 25:19teams to get in there? Is there a realistic path though
- 25:21that actually that could play out?
- 25:24Yeah, I think there is actually. I I think that first of all,
- 25:27having that, that's their last year as an 8 conference, a game
- 25:33conference that makes it really challenging because there's not
- 25:36a lot of breakup. There's not that game, you know,
- 25:39one extra game causes half the teams to win and half the teams
- 25:42to lose, which really is helpful.
- 25:43But, but I think, you know, Alabama and Georgia have the
- 25:46most difficult schedules, but then I wonder and, and Oklahoma,
- 25:49but, but then how do the other ones navigate it?
- 25:52And all of a sudden you got a log jam of, you know, 5 or so
- 25:55teams with ten wins. That's going to be tough to kind
- 25:59of break apart. And how do you differentiate?
- 26:01And well, this team beat this team and then that team beat
- 26:03this team and it's just like this, you know, all all over the
- 26:06place. So I think it's it's really
- 26:09likely. And especially when you look at
- 26:10the Big 10 right now until kind of what I call like the mushy
- 26:14middle, somebody steps up and win some big games and puts
- 26:17themselves in position. I think there's a clear line
- 26:20Penn State fell. I mean, it is bad of a loss as
- 26:23I've ever seen. And they're not getting in
- 26:25unless they sweep that mean that that's what their non conference
- 26:28schedule did to them and removed any kind of benefit of doubt.
- 26:31And so, you know, Penn State goes 10 and two, then they don't
- 26:34get their way back in there. But until then, you know,
- 26:37Illinois has a big blot, you know, 63 to 10.
- 26:41Iowa's got a really tough schedule and and it's hard to
- 26:44say. I mean, if they went out there
- 26:45definitely. And but you know, Michigan, if
- 26:47they get past this game and Washington and they've got a
- 26:50pass there, but but that's, you know, and then some of the
- 26:54others, it's hard to say. Nebraska's in decent shape, but
- 26:58but they've shown some fatal flaws.
- 27:00There's just so much there in the Big 10.
- 27:02It's hard to really keep everybody and then and then
- 27:05probably with the Big 12, I think at at this point it's you
- 27:09know, it's a 11 team league. It's just going to be that way.
- 27:11And unless your mark decides that they want to take the
- 27:15guarantees and get 2 and every year because it's just, it's
- 27:18going to be hard for the second team to really break past either
- 27:22the Big 10 or SEC. Which is head scratching to me.
- 27:24As many good moves as he's made, that seems to be I just don't
- 27:27understand it when we get to that point.
- 27:29There is an independent team doc that has not.
- 27:31It does not make your top 12. And if they're 10 and two with
- 27:35losses to Miami and A&M and, and I think both they're both in
- 27:39this bracket that you posted, what about Notre Dame chances if
- 27:43they go the rest of the way now won't be as many data points,
- 27:46obviously, but losses to Miami and Texas A&M, should they both
- 27:50qualify, does that elevate Notre Dame into the top 12?
- 27:54It, it can I, I think Notre Dame is still, you know, it has to
- 27:57get to the end, it has to get the tenant too.
- 28:00It's not quite as dire as Penn State because Penn State had the
- 28:04UCLA loss looks an awful lot like Northern Illinois did for
- 28:07them last year. But but I, I think that Notre
- 28:10Dame, it doesn't have a lot of great opponents.
- 28:14It doesn't have anybody else. I think that's in the top 25 on
- 28:17their schedule. You know, you've got USC was
- 28:20probably the most challenging opponent, I would say left, you
- 28:23know, Pitt and is OK and and Syracuse, but but there's really
- 28:27nobody on there that makes you just jump out and and which
- 28:31means that they're just going to have to win and win decisively
- 28:33and impressively because with that type of a schedule, how do
- 28:37you line them up against, you know, take your pick any any
- 28:43tenant to SEC team. What if Illinois gets attended
- 28:45to? I mean, how do you really judge
- 28:48those? I, I, I mean, I think that every
- 28:50team in a league has an advantage over them, as they
- 28:53should. So Notre Dame, between this and
- 28:56and the SD rivalry thing, it's going to have to start
- 29:00evaluating itself that it just doesn't have the the bandwidth
- 29:03to be able to absorb a lot of this stuff.
- 29:05Doc over the weekend, one of the biggest stories was UCLA of what
- 29:08they did with little Skippy, Neuheisel, a Jerry playing
- 29:12calls, getting carried off the field.
- 29:14Just an incredible 1. And did I hear it all right?
- 29:17I was listening to Ralph Russo along with the guys over at The
- 29:19Athletic in their podcast. Were you the one that let Rick
- 29:22Neuheisel play know that Jerry was going to be the offensive
- 29:25coordinator for this week? It was Bruce.
- 29:27Oh, it was Bruce. OK.
- 29:29Yeah, yeah, He texted Rick. I I talked to Rick on Saturday
- 29:33night for a little while about this and he said he goes, this
- 29:36is how good you guys are. I I, I'm sitting there on
- 29:39Tuesday and I get a text from Bruce Feldman and he says, hey,
- 29:42does, is Jerry the offensive coordinator this week?
- 29:45And he's like, I don't know. And he calls him, he's like,
- 29:47yeah, I just found out three minutes ago.
- 29:51So it's kind of funny. But yeah, what a what an
- 29:54incredible. Team.
- 29:56And I, I mean, I just can't think of very many upsets like
- 29:59this. I mean, UCLA firing its coach,
- 30:01looking so badly against New Mexico.
- 30:05I mean, and then to run all over Penn State, I mean, you know,
- 30:09gosh, I think last year we kind of thought that was a bad loss
- 30:12for Iowa out there. But in retrospect, that that
- 30:16UCLA team looks way better than this one does.
- 30:18But it really, I mean, more than anything, it was a fun,
- 30:21wonderful moment for, for UCLA, but it's devastating for for
- 30:25Penn State. They are in, I mean, you want to
- 30:28talk about agony meter, They're number 12 and 3 after this.
- 30:32I mean, they just, they just they're going to have to sweep
- 30:34out And and they're three, you know, they go three games in a
- 30:37row at Iowa, which is a night game at Ohio State, which is a
- 30:40big noon game, and then Indiana home consecutively.
- 30:46And then, you know, against other teams, Michigan State and
- 30:48Nebraska, which aren't exactly pushovers, I mean, Penn State
- 30:52could be in that seven and five range if if they don't play the
- 30:55cards right. And for a team that expected to
- 30:58compete for the national championship, that would be as
- 31:01big of a let down as we've ever seen.
- 31:03Yeah, they're going to play Texas in that game of memory
- 31:05serves and and that doesn't sound like that's going to
- 31:08happen as and by the way, Trent is is Texas favored over
- 31:12Oklahoma this week in. In which no material.
- 31:15Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me. I mean, I saw Kenny White's
- 31:17numbers. He still has Texas 4th in the
- 31:19country with his power rankings. Doc, let's get to the Hawks.
- 31:22But it sounds like maybe some good news when it comes to
- 31:25Gronowski, as I will. We'll head to Wisconsin on
- 31:28Saturday night and perhaps have their starting quarterback back.
- 31:31The depth charts been released. You know, Kirk as well as
- 31:34anybody when it comes to those. But just your thoughts.
- 31:37Maybe Gronowski. There's a chance he's going to
- 31:39play Doc. Yeah, that's what I've been
- 31:42hearing that really since Saturday ish, that they didn't
- 31:45think he had an ACL tear. So you know, when when you're
- 31:48dealing with something on the lines of a sprained knee, it's
- 31:52you know, sometimes it's a two week injury, sometimes it's a
- 31:55four week injury. It just kind of depends on how
- 31:57it responds and how it heals. And and that's kind of what I've
- 32:01heard all along. So I was a little surprised that
- 32:03it was like, oh, this is a big deal, But I mean, it, it's a big
- 32:06deal for Iowa, especially against Wisconsin, because the
- 32:10way he, he's run the ball has been so effective this year.
- 32:13And, and if he can play, then it, it really does change kind
- 32:18of the, the, the demographics of the game in some ways.
- 32:22I mean, cause when, when you look at the other side with
- 32:24Wisconsin, with what their schedule is the rest of the way,
- 32:28this is a game that they're obviously pointing to.
- 32:30It's a rivalry game. It's one that they feel like
- 32:33they could probably win. It's one in the offseason that
- 32:36the, the team all got together and we're going to have 42 push
- 32:39ups to remind us of the 42 points we allowed.
- 32:42It's it's night game, it's Camp Randall, it's it's homecoming.
- 32:46So they're going to be pretty jacked up.
- 32:48And I guess if you're Iowa, you'd like to have your, your
- 32:51starting quarterback available for that environment because
- 32:54now, even though this is the worst Wisconsin team I've seen
- 32:57in three decades, it still has the ability to win a game once
- 33:01in a while. And, and I think that's
- 33:02something that, you know, Iowa's going to have to be cognizant
- 33:05about because it's a tough environment.
- 33:06And and if you can to defeat the environment quickly, then you'll
- 33:10have no problem with the Badgers.
- 33:12But if you can't then and you let them linger, that's when it
- 33:15can be a dangerous situation. So Jaden Harold not listed on
- 33:18the depth chart, he left a couple of different times in the
- 33:21game against Indiana. You have Montgomery listed as a
- 33:24starter there. If it came down to it, though,
- 33:27from what we've seen out of Carson Shire, is it more likely
- 33:29when they're going cash and just two linebackers out there, it'll
- 33:32put Shire in the middle and then you'd have maybe Rex Roth on the
- 33:35outside. How do you think that plays out
- 33:37if Harold can't go? From what I I'd heard that it's
- 33:41kind of a sprained knee situation with Harold as well.
- 33:44And I think this is what it, I've heard different lines like
- 33:51earlier last week, it was going to be more Shire playing middle,
- 33:54Rex Roth playing Will and going that route.
- 33:57But but then they have a lot of faith in in Montgomery.
- 34:00I think they in some ways you just kind of list it the way you
- 34:03want to list it and then figure it out as you go.
- 34:05Because if they're not beholden to that depth chart, that's just
- 34:08for us to talk about. And so I, I would be surprised
- 34:12that, I mean, Shire has a lot of physical ability.
- 34:15He's really good and really athletic and can make some
- 34:18splash plays, but he's still kind of undisciplined.
- 34:22So that's why I wonder, you know, where they're going to go
- 34:25with this route because he does overrun play sometimes and, and
- 34:29he needs to kind of get more settled, which is all about
- 34:31experience because he does have the physical ability.
- 34:33But, and Rex Roth's been really a really strong, solid player.
- 34:37You know, maybe he doesn't have the that the others do, but he
- 34:39is pretty athletic and have been pretty fast too.
- 34:42So I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him more on the field.
- 34:46So, you know, Montgomery, Ben Keckerich, even the younger guys
- 34:49will see what happens. But I think that's, you know,
- 34:52that they're going to they're probably play a lot of 425 the
- 34:55way Wisconsin, you know, kind of mixing their their alignments
- 34:59from both running the ball more effectively than last year a
- 35:02little bit and then also 33 receiver sets.
- 35:06Doc, what do you got coming up this week at The Athletic?
- 35:09Yeah, I've got a story coming out tomorrow about the CFP when
- 35:12I was on the mock draft and just kind of going through the, the
- 35:15scenarios, what they're doing differently there.
- 35:17And then kind of this fun story I've been working on since the
- 35:20summer is it's coming out later this week.
- 35:23It's life in football along the beer highway.
- 35:26And I, I've stopped at 5 different places, partly in the
- 35:31summer, partly in the last week or so between Iowa City and
- 35:35Madison, that to talk football, talk beer, talk other things,
- 35:39you know, spent a lot of time in Dubuque with my former battery
- 35:42mate, which was fun. And he'll, he's quoted in my
- 35:46story for the first time and but then all the other places to New
- 35:51Glarus and Cedar Rapids and and some sports bars.
- 35:54So yeah, it's, it was a fun story.
- 35:56I just finished it yesterday. We'll see what the editing
- 35:59process takes us, but but overall pretty excited about it.
- 36:03Well, we'll, we'll finish where we ended, and that's in eastern
- 36:05Iowa. The folks out there that read
- 36:08The Gazette with a loss and you and Morehouse, they were spoiled
- 36:11out there when it comes to Hawkeye coverage, no doubt about
- 36:13it. And I'm not done.
- 36:14This isn't a knock on anybody that's doing it now, but you
- 36:17guys set the bar very high. Doc great stuff.
- 36:19I will talk to you next Monday, Scott.
- 36:20Thank you. All right.
- 36:22Thank you very much. Yeah, good to talk to Scott
- 36:23Doctorman from The Athletic. And he will be on on Iowa
- 36:26tonight on KCRG. For those folks listening in
- 36:31eastern Iowa, Mr. Monday Night is warming up.
- 36:34He's got his play for tonight's game.
- 36:35That's next. Circus sports sponsors.
- 36:37It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 36:39I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back to the Iowa Sports
- 36:42Radio Network. Our final segment, Mr. Monday
- 36:45NIGHT coming up with his play of the of Monday night slate.
- 36:50You know there aren't very many days that I want you are that I
- 36:53wish you and I were doing 3 hours.
- 36:55Maybe October would be the only Yeah, we didn't mention
- 36:57baseball. No, not.
- 36:58At all. Didn't when we would have done
- 37:00it on what a weekend it was. What a weekend it was.
- 37:03Cubs need to win tonight. Yeah, I think so.
- 37:05Too, They're not winning four out of 5I.
- 37:07Don't think so. Can the Phillies if they get
- 37:09beat tonight? No, you don't think so either.
- 37:12And that's one of the things that I'm going to be playing
- 37:14tonight. I took Lizardo under 15 1/2
- 37:17outs, OK, just I think any kind of trouble, they got to go to
- 37:19that bullpen fast and. Blake's No, he's better at home.
- 37:23Oh, absolutely. But boy, was he really good in
- 37:25his. Last start his His strikeout
- 37:28total is 7 1/2 for tonight he's he's probably gonna have a
- 37:31longer leash though already upload nothing don't want to tax
- 37:34that bullpen that already has issues I.
- 37:35Think that's, I think that's the right handicap, but I think
- 37:37you're on the right side. But Lizardo, I just I I think
- 37:39they have to go quick if you run it, even if it's.
- 37:42The now he's capable. Oh, absolutely.
- 37:43I mean, he can strike out 12. Sure.
- 37:45I mean, he's that good and that talented.
- 37:46But I'm playing that one. I am going to play also the
- 37:49Dodgers tonight. But for Monday Night Football,
- 37:51for our purposes, yes, Mr. Monday Night has this loves
- 37:56dogs. You're taking the Jags, he's
- 37:59taking bacon. Part now at you.
- 38:01No, no, I would never play these.
- 38:03He of course was the same guy that had the Bengals last week.
- 38:05What an idiot. But I they have been so good at
- 38:11forcing turnovers. The worthy thing?
- 38:14Really concerned. Me.
- 38:15Yeah. When the What do we know anymore
- 38:17this morning or do Rappaport said.
- 38:19That game time. He's expected to play that the
- 38:23expectation is, but it's 2 injuries have it on a flight.
- 38:27I mean, just it's weird. I don't know, something stinks
- 38:30over there. He is so important to what they
- 38:32do. They have to have that vertical
- 38:34threat of just opening everything else out.
- 38:37And because of that, how limited.
- 38:38Even Nick Athan said it earlier to us today.
- 38:41Now he said he was winded after the game running.
- 38:43What are you going to get 2530 snaps out of him?
- 38:45Something like that. They're just something about
- 38:47Jacksonville hanging around. This is a huge spot for them
- 38:49too. Oh, sure it.
- 38:50Is and for the city get Monday Night Football against a good
- 38:53opponent. This will be their biggest game
- 38:55of the year. This is not a prime better
- 38:56season. A prime time Thursday game
- 38:59against the Titans, right? They're used to those.
- 39:00Yes, this is a huge one down there.
- 39:03I think you're going to see a great environment.
- 39:05I'll take the 3 1/2 good stuff. Mr. Monday night will Mr. Monday
- 39:08night of. Course not you you're playing
- 39:10baseball yes and we're talking baseball tomorrow yes, so join
- 39:13us but coming up next it's off the bench with Lucas and Sean.
- 39:17We're Miller and Con, the weekdays noon to two Iowa Sports
- 39:20Radio Network.
