- 0:04Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. He's a troublemaker. Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Randy Unscripted.
- 0:12I'm Randy Black. Today, this is episode 19
- 0:16in our napod promo 20 '25 series. That's national
- 0:20podcast
- 0:21post month.
- 0:22The goal is to post 30 episodes
- 0:25in thirty days.
- 0:27And today,
- 0:28we're gonna talk about something that's a little different but is super practical.
- 0:33Have you ever had an idea
- 0:36that came to you faster
- 0:38than your fingers could type?
- 0:40You know, that that moment where your brain is firing on all cylinders, but your hands just can't keep up?
- 0:48Well, today, I wanna talk to you about a tool that lets you literally speak your ideas into existence.
- 0:55Whether you're drafting a podcast script
- 0:58or a blog post,
- 1:00a lesson plan,
- 1:02voice to text dictation tools can completely change the way you work,
- 1:07and one in particular that I've been using is called monologue.
- 1:11Now
- 1:13before we get into the specifics of monologue, let's talk about why voice to text is such a big deal.
- 1:20Typing's great,
- 1:22but it can be slow,
- 1:23especially when your ideas are flowing faster than your fingers can type.
- 1:28Dictation
- 1:30lets you capture those thoughts as they happen.
- 1:34For podcasters like me, it's it's a huge help for drafting scripts or show notes.
- 1:39For educators,
- 1:41it's the perfect way to
- 1:43put together lecture outlines or lesson plans
- 1:46or even quick feedback for students.
- 1:49And, honestly,
- 1:51it's just nice to get out of the chair sometimes and talk your way through a project.
- 1:56That's where monologue comes in.
- 1:58It's a macOS app that listens to what you're saying and transcribes it directly into whatever whatever application you just happen to be working in.
- 2:08But it's more than just
- 2:09a basic transcription tool.
- 2:12It's smart about formatting,
- 2:14punctuation,
- 2:16and even context.
- 2:18It can tell if you're trying to make a list,
- 2:20a paragraph,
- 2:22or a script, and it will adjust accordingly.
- 2:26So here's how I've been using it.
- 2:29Let's say that I'm drafting an episode.
- 2:32Instead of typing everything out, I just I hit the dictation hotkey,
- 2:37which on Mac OS by default with monologue is the right option key,
- 2:41and I just start talking into the microphone.
- 2:44And monologue
- 2:45turns my words into text in real time.
- 2:49It keeps the formatting clean.
- 2:51It inserts paragraphs where it believes they belong,
- 2:54and even handles things like bullet points if I'm creating a list.
- 2:58I don't have to worry about manually formatting it later,
- 3:01which saves a ton of time.
- 3:05And if you use their online model to do the transcription,
- 3:08it supports
- 3:10over a 100 languages,
- 3:13which is fantastic if you're working in a multilingual environment.
- 3:16You know, if you're an educator and you're supporting students with different language needs.
- 3:21Plus,
- 3:23it's designed to be private.
- 3:25You have the option to use a local model,
- 3:27and the audio and the transcript stay on your device.
- 3:30So you do not have to worry about sending your work to some cloud service
- 3:35unless you choose to do so.
- 3:38One of my favorite things with this is that monologue
- 3:41lets you create modes for different tasks.
- 3:44I could have a mode for drafting blog posts, another for podcast scripts and ideas,
- 3:50and even one for for lesson plans as an educator.
- 3:53It changes how the text is formatted
- 3:56based on the mode that I select.
- 3:58It's a small thing,
- 4:00but, man, it really speeds up the workflow for people.
- 4:06So
- 4:07let's break this down by role as to why you might love this tool.
- 4:11So let's go for podcasters.
- 4:14Dictation
- 4:15helps you capture the rhythm of natural speech.
- 4:18Your scripts will feel more like something you'd actually say because you're talking them out.
- 4:23For bloggers,
- 4:25it's perfect for rough drafts. You can get your ideas down fast and then polish them later.
- 4:30For educators,
- 4:32you can dictate lecture notes, lesson plans, or feedback and have them ready to format for slides or handouts
- 4:37without any extra typing on your part.
- 4:41And the big win across all these roles,
- 4:44time.
- 4:46You spend less time typing and more time thinking, refining, and creating.
- 4:51That alone makes it worth exploring.
- 4:54Now
- 4:55I'm singing the praises of monologue, but it isn't the only option that's out there.
- 5:00If you're on a Mac and you just need something simple, the the built in Apple dictation is is decent, and it's free. It works pretty well, though it's not as smart about the formatting as monologue is.
- 5:12Looking at the premium side, we've got stuff like Dragon NaturallySpeaking,
- 5:16which has been around
- 5:18forever.
- 5:20It is extremely accurate, and it is great for heavy users, though
- 5:24it's mostly Windows based and and has a high high price tag for a barrier of entry.
- 5:31There's also otter.ai,
- 5:33which is more cloud focused.
- 5:35It's ideal for recording meetings or podcasts
- 5:38rather than live dictation directly in an app, and it'll transcribe them.
- 5:43And if you if you like tinkering with things, there are some niche niche tools out there like MacWhisper,
- 5:48which I also use, and WhisperFlow, which can be privately focused
- 5:53or online or offline first. You can have those models completely offline.
- 5:59Each tool has trade offs,
- 6:01you know, the platform, the cost, the accuracy,
- 6:04the integration with your workflow.
- 6:06My advice is try the free options first.
- 6:09See what fits with your needs before you commit to a paid plan.
- 6:16Here's a few tips if you want to
- 6:19try to make the most out of using one of these dictation tools.
- 6:24First is use a good quality microphone
- 6:26and a quiet room.
- 6:28That makes a big difference.
- 6:31Second is to create custom modes or presets for different types of content. Working on a podcast, I have a mode for that. Working on a blog, I have a boat for that, and etcetera.
- 6:41Number three, do a two pass edit.
- 6:44A quick review to catch obvious errors. So
- 6:47do your first pass, review it, and then polish it and refine your text as a second pass.
- 6:54Fourth thing is to capture your ideas on the go.
- 6:56Dictate while you're walking, you're commuting, or taking a break, and that's where Apple's
- 7:00free dictation stuff comes in. You can do that into the Notes app and then come back home, sit down at your Mac,
- 7:07and play that dictation back or or dick look at your notes and dictate it into monologue if you wanna use that.
- 7:13And finally, for podcasters,
- 7:16you can easily dictate rough scripts or show notes and then copy
- 7:20that into your templates.
- 7:22For educators,
- 7:23you could dictate your lecture outlines and then turn them into slides or handouts
- 7:27really quickly and really easily.
- 7:30Honestly, these little workflow tweaks make a huge difference. You get the speed of talking without losing control over the final text.
- 7:41So to wrap things up today,
- 7:44voice to text tools like Monologue
- 7:46can completely change the way you work.
- 7:48They save time. They help you capture your ideas more naturally,
- 7:52and they give you the flexibility
- 7:55you don't get with typing alone.
- 7:57The right tool for you
- 8:00ultimately depends on the platform, on your workflow, and how much dictation you do.
- 8:05But experimenting with one of these tools is almost always worth it.
- 8:10For me, using my voice to draft content has opened up new ways to organize my thoughts and keep that creative
- 8:17momentum
- 8:18that I have going.
- 8:20And if you're a podcaster, a blogger, or an educator,
- 8:23I know you'll see these similar benefits.
- 8:27That's it for today's episode of Randy Unscripted napod promo twenty twenty five series episode 19. Remember, national podcast post month. The goal is 30 episodes
- 8:38in thirty days.
