Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan, and today in the show, we are exploring
- 0:17Speaker 1: the highs, lows, and lessons learned from my first experience
- 0:22Speaker 1: bow hunting white tails in the suburbs of Washington, d C.
- 0:26Speaker 1: With the one and only Taylor Chamberlain. All Right, welcome
- 0:39Speaker 1: to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by
- 0:41Speaker 1: First Life, and today, as I just mentioned, we are
- 0:45Speaker 1: going to dive into my hunt earlier this year in Washington,
- 0:49Speaker 1: d C. Yep, that's right. I was out there hunting
- 0:54Speaker 1: in the neighborhoods the suburbs of our nation's capital, and
- 0:59Speaker 1: I was out there with Taylor Chamberlain, who I will
- 1:01Speaker 1: give you some more details on here shortly, but first
- 1:04Speaker 1: let's recap what this hunt was all about. You likely
- 1:08Speaker 1: maybe if you listen to some of our past episodes,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you might understand what I've been up to this fall.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But let me recap just in case you missed those. Uh,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm filming a new show for me either this year
- 1:19Speaker 1: that is about white tail honey across the country and
- 1:22Speaker 1: the different unique traditions and styles and cultures of pursuing
- 1:27Speaker 1: these critters that we all love, but in wildly different
- 1:30Speaker 1: places and in wildly different ways across the country. And
- 1:35Speaker 1: the first of those was this d C hunt. Now
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm filming this year. The show is going to come
- 1:41Speaker 1: out next year. Um, I'm four episodes in at this point,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and now I want to kick off this recap series
- 1:48Speaker 1: of podcasts where I'm gonna go through each one of
- 1:51Speaker 1: those hunts with the special guests that I visited with,
- 1:54Speaker 1: with some of my camera crew that was out there
- 1:56Speaker 1: with me, and recap what I did, what we experience
- 2:00Speaker 1: into these different places, what I learned along the way, um,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and then you know how the hunts themselves went. And
- 2:07Speaker 1: here's the thing about this year. This year has really
- 2:10Speaker 1: been about learning. Uh. For a long time, I've been
- 2:15Speaker 1: doing this podcast, and I've I've traveled a decent bit, right,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but but most of my stuff is in the Midwest.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Most of my stuff is you know, your standard tree,
- 2:24Speaker 1: standard tree saddle hunting, you know, figuring out how deer
- 2:28Speaker 1: relating to agricultural land, YadA, YadA, YadA. And that's great,
- 2:32Speaker 1: that's fun. I love doing that. But at the same time,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I know there's a lot of different other ways out
- 2:37Speaker 1: there that people are hunting, and I know there's a
- 2:39Speaker 1: lot of you listening who come from different regions of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the country, and you've probably been listening to these shows
- 2:44Speaker 1: and thinking to yourself, Man, yeah, that's interesting, but it's
- 2:47Speaker 1: not like what I do here at home, or it's
- 2:49Speaker 1: not like the deer I hunt here, or it's not
- 2:51Speaker 1: like this other place I go. And I wanted to
- 2:55Speaker 1: try to put myself in a better position where I
- 2:57Speaker 1: could understand where you're coming from, where I could understand
- 3:01Speaker 1: and have some degree of context, some experience that would
- 3:06Speaker 1: help me relate better to folks that are hunting in
- 3:09Speaker 1: the cities, or help me relate better to people that
- 3:12Speaker 1: hunt in the South, or help me understand what folks
- 3:14Speaker 1: are up against hunting up in the Upper Northeast or
- 3:17Speaker 1: these different parts of the country. So so that's why
- 3:19Speaker 1: I did what I did this year. That's why I
- 3:20Speaker 1: wanted to take on this new project. And the gist
- 3:23Speaker 1: of each episode is this, I go to some different,
- 3:27Speaker 1: unique region and I meet with an expert in hunting
- 3:30Speaker 1: in that place and explore both the culture of this
- 3:34Speaker 1: location and this unique way that this expert hunts. So
- 3:39Speaker 1: in this first episode, this first story, I'm gonna tell
- 3:42Speaker 1: you guys, it's all about hunting in the suburbs. It's
- 3:45Speaker 1: all the hunting in cities. It's about bow hunting and
- 3:47Speaker 1: tight quarters in neighborhoods, surrounded by people, and a guy
- 3:52Speaker 1: who's really made a name for himself, and that is
- 3:55Speaker 1: Taylor Chamberlain. Taylor lives outside of d C. He has
- 3:59Speaker 1: star did a really popular YouTube series. He has you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: has got a podcast. He's got a social media handle
- 4:06Speaker 1: where you can follow along and learn everything he's doing
- 4:09Speaker 1: out there hunting deer almost every day of the year
- 4:13Speaker 1: and getting it done in tough situations. So he was
- 4:15Speaker 1: a guy who right away, when I decided that I
- 4:17Speaker 1: wanted to learn how people hunt in these city environments,
- 4:20Speaker 1: he was the guy knew I had to go talk to.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And that's exactly what we did. In early October. I
- 4:26Speaker 1: flew out there to Virginia, met up with Taylor and
- 4:30Speaker 1: UH and had a heck of a hunt. So today
- 4:32Speaker 1: that's the story I want to share with you. I'm
- 4:35Speaker 1: excited to to hopefully pass along some lessons learned here.
- 4:39Speaker 1: There's some things I learned there's some strategy elements that
- 4:41Speaker 1: we're gonna get into. We're to discuss, you know, how
- 4:44Speaker 1: to get permission on properties like this. We're gonna talk
- 4:46Speaker 1: about how to actually find deer in these places, how
- 4:49Speaker 1: to hunt deer without spooking him, some tips on shooting deer,
- 4:52Speaker 1: recovering deer, a lot of different practical things like that,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and then also discussed some of the maybe less expected
- 4:59Speaker 1: um elements they go into this kind of hunt. So
- 5:04Speaker 1: it's interesting. I'll tell you what. I have been on
- 5:07Speaker 1: the road almost NonStop since October. Um. I haven't been
- 5:10Speaker 1: home for more than about a week. Otherwise it's been go, go, go,
- 5:14Speaker 1: gone for a week, home for a week, gone for
- 5:16Speaker 1: a week, home for a week, gone for two weeks,
- 5:17Speaker 1: home for a week. Uh. So I am absolutely tanked.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever been so worn out and
- 5:24Speaker 1: exhausted from a season of hunting. But I'm hoping that
- 5:28Speaker 1: the end result, these stories, these experiences, this show that
- 5:32Speaker 1: we're putting together. I hope that this end product is
- 5:35Speaker 1: something that you guys are really gonna enjoy and they're
- 5:37Speaker 1: gonna be able to learn from. And uh, it's gonna
- 5:39Speaker 1: be worth the long days and nights out there. So
- 5:44Speaker 1: without further ado, let's get to it. I I've got
- 5:47Speaker 1: Taylor Chamberlain here with me, and I also have Justin Michelle,
- 5:51Speaker 1: who is one of my cameramen on this shoot. He's
- 5:54Speaker 1: been on some of our past episodes too, so you'll
- 5:56Speaker 1: probably recognize him. Hope you enjoy it. Here we go
- 5:59Speaker 1: all right with me on the show today. I have
- 6:03Speaker 1: my partners in crime from the recent adventure of sorts
- 6:09Speaker 1: on my Washington, d C. Suburbs. So I'm here Taylor
- 6:13Speaker 1: Chamberlain and Justin Michelle. Taylor, Justin, thanks for getting back
- 6:17Speaker 1: on here with me, hey man, thanks for you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: we have two careful saying partners in crime when we're
- 6:23Speaker 1: talking about urban hunting. It's a good point committed in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the urban hunting this that we did, you know, but
- 6:34Speaker 1: that that kind of I was gonna say, it's like
- 6:37Speaker 1: a little too close, yeah man, but you're you're skipping
- 6:42Speaker 1: right to the ending, Justin um Man. But but yes,
- 6:47Speaker 1: that is a really good way to set this whole
- 6:49Speaker 1: thing up, because this was a memorable hunt in a
- 6:53Speaker 1: lot of different ways, both from the hunting and some
- 6:56Speaker 1: of the extracurricular activities that happened throughout uh and and
- 7:01Speaker 1: a number of other things. So what I was hoping
- 7:04Speaker 1: you guys could help me do here it is recap
- 7:08Speaker 1: kind of the whole story of the week, what we did,
- 7:12Speaker 1: what we learned. Taylor. I'm hoping we can kind of
- 7:15Speaker 1: dive into some of the how to stuff that you
- 7:16Speaker 1: were sharing with me that I found really helpful. Um
- 7:19Speaker 1: justin I'm hoping you can kind of help fact check
- 7:22Speaker 1: me and help me as we walk through the story
- 7:24Speaker 1: of our kind of are are on our own hunts
- 7:27Speaker 1: and kind of layout lay out the journey, lay out
- 7:31Speaker 1: this crazy experience that was my first real suburban, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: in a big city hunting experience. So that's that's the
- 7:40Speaker 1: game plan. Are you guys down for that? Yeah? That
- 7:43Speaker 1: sounds great man. And first off, thank you for coming
- 7:46Speaker 1: to the bourbs and uh getting to experience it, because
- 7:50Speaker 1: I really feel like you can speak to this. But
- 7:54Speaker 1: you get an idea of what it's like. And even
- 7:56Speaker 1: if you watch you know, some of my videos, some
- 7:58Speaker 1: of the content that's out there, or you're even stuff
- 8:01Speaker 1: where it's not revolving around me hunting, just urban hunting
- 8:04Speaker 1: in general, you kind of get an idea about what
- 8:06Speaker 1: it's like, but then to experience it is totally different.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Would you say that's a fair and accurate statement? Oh dude,
- 8:14Speaker 1: it is so so true, so true, because what you
- 8:18Speaker 1: see on the videos, what you see is nothing but
- 8:21Speaker 1: well not entirely, but it's mostly just like the the
- 8:25Speaker 1: simple fun part, the sitting in the tree, the watching
- 8:28Speaker 1: the deer, the shooting deer. Um. What you don't see
- 8:31Speaker 1: when you watch videos like yours or Seque or anyone
- 8:34Speaker 1: else like that is all the work are on the edges,
- 8:38Speaker 1: all the relationship building, all of the dealing with all
- 8:42Speaker 1: the different weird logistical challenges, um, all the different pressures
- 8:47Speaker 1: that the suburban environment puts on you. Um. The the
- 8:52Speaker 1: feeling is just entirely different than you can pick up
- 8:55Speaker 1: in a TV show, and entirely different than you know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I could even imagine going into it. Would you justin
- 9:02Speaker 1: is that? Would you agree with that? Being another guy
- 9:04Speaker 1: that was new to this, Yeah, absolutely, you know, like
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm I'm used to. You know, it's always a little
- 9:11Speaker 1: bit nerve racking trying to gain permission places, and but
- 9:14Speaker 1: you know, doing it and farmland where it kind of
- 9:17Speaker 1: feels like home. Um, you know, it definitely gives you
- 9:21Speaker 1: a bit of a different approach. But yeah, just rolling
- 9:25Speaker 1: into the city and and uh, just realizing like this
- 9:29Speaker 1: is where we're gonna hunt, it just felt like extremely wrong,
- 9:36Speaker 1: definitely different. Um, So here here I'll set I'll set
- 9:39Speaker 1: the stage for what our plan was going into the week.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The idea was this, we were gonna show up me
- 9:46Speaker 1: justin the other camera guy Chase, who couldn't be with
- 9:49Speaker 1: us here tonight, and we were gonna arrive meet up
- 9:51Speaker 1: with you Taylor in like the on in the National
- 9:54Speaker 1: mall right, downtown Washington, d C. Spended on half a
- 9:58Speaker 1: day or a day kind of just picking your brain
- 10:00Speaker 1: about how you got into this kind of hunting and
- 10:03Speaker 1: why you love suburban hunting, and you know, just just
- 10:07Speaker 1: kind of a deep dive into the whole world and
- 10:09Speaker 1: culture of this way of getting outside and doing stuff.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And then from there we're going to spend I think
- 10:17Speaker 1: it was a half day where plan was to actually
- 10:19Speaker 1: go out and do a hunt with you. So I
- 10:21Speaker 1: was going to tag along with you, follow along, see
- 10:25Speaker 1: what you do, understand what your gears you use, how
- 10:29Speaker 1: you handle you know, getting into a property. We're gonna
- 10:32Speaker 1: go and chat with a landowner about this whole situation
- 10:36Speaker 1: and what they thought about meeting with you and all that.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And then after that whole kind of set up period
- 10:41Speaker 1: where I was learning from you and chatting with the
- 10:43Speaker 1: landowners and kind of getting my head wrapped around this
- 10:45Speaker 1: whole idea, then I was going to have three days
- 10:48Speaker 1: to go hunt on my own and try to figure
- 10:51Speaker 1: this whole thing out. And oh, by the way, also
- 10:54Speaker 1: try to get my own permission by knocking on doors too.
- 10:57Speaker 1: So that was that was the plan for the week. Um,
- 11:01Speaker 1: we showed up that first day. I don't know if
- 11:03Speaker 1: there's much worth touching on on that first day where
- 11:05Speaker 1: we kind of toured downtown. It was fun to get
- 11:07Speaker 1: to kind of see I hadn't been to Washington, d C.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Since I was a little kids, so it's fun to
- 11:11Speaker 1: see everything again. I think the most notable thing was
- 11:14Speaker 1: that Taylor, you and me sat down on some benches
- 11:16Speaker 1: to do an interview and all of a sudden, You're like, dude,
- 11:19Speaker 1: what is that stench? And we looked down and like, Oh,
- 11:22Speaker 1: someone's been pissing all over these benches. That's what stands
- 11:25Speaker 1: out to me about that day. Yes, that was fun.
- 11:29Speaker 1: When we sat down, it was pretty obvious that we
- 11:32Speaker 1: were sitting in a homeless person's restrooms. So that's never fun.
- 11:38Speaker 1: In downtown. It's always kind of cool to to like
- 11:41Speaker 1: see d C proper and and walk around and kind
- 11:46Speaker 1: of realized like the history and the power that reside
- 11:51Speaker 1: in d C. And we got to see a Netflix
- 11:53Speaker 1: special being filmed too, But other than that, not much memorable. Now.
- 11:58Speaker 1: A lot of people that come in from out of
- 12:00Speaker 1: down Uh, they see these surprised by the topography of
- 12:06Speaker 1: northern Virginia d C, like the metropol are I was
- 12:11Speaker 1: expected to see, like the rolling hills or was it?
- 12:15Speaker 1: Did you do extract something different? No, I would agree
- 12:19Speaker 1: with that. I was especially you know, we saw downtown
- 12:22Speaker 1: and then we crossed the river into Virginia and started
- 12:26Speaker 1: driving almost immediately into some very deery looking spots. Like
- 12:30Speaker 1: right away, I was like, oh, now I can understand
- 12:33Speaker 1: why deer would be here. And you're right. It was
- 12:35Speaker 1: a lot of rolling hills, really kind of steep, thick ravines,
- 12:40Speaker 1: lots of good cover um and and yeah, just a
- 12:44Speaker 1: ton of nooks and crannies and crevices where you could
- 12:46Speaker 1: see deer houlding up and living. Um. Would you agree
- 12:49Speaker 1: with that, Justine, Yeah, for sure, it was. It was
- 12:54Speaker 1: right away I could see there being deer. And what
- 12:57Speaker 1: that first I guess is that afternoon, I think we
- 13:01Speaker 1: went and we went and chatted with one of the
- 13:04Speaker 1: homeowners that you hunt on her property. We kind of
- 13:06Speaker 1: picked her brain about, you know, how dear have become
- 13:10Speaker 1: a problem for her, why she was interested in having
- 13:13Speaker 1: someone come hunt her land. Um, Taylor, is there anything
- 13:17Speaker 1: on that front that maybe is worth kind of you know,
- 13:20Speaker 1: let me take a step back here. We kind of
- 13:22Speaker 1: jumped right into the story, but one thing we didn't
- 13:25Speaker 1: really cover was why this kind of hunting is is
- 13:30Speaker 1: important or why is it worth considering? Um? And I'm curious,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I think of this because when we went and chatted
- 13:36Speaker 1: with this landowner, you know, she was sharing with us
- 13:39Speaker 1: how she was experiencing this problem with there being too
- 13:43Speaker 1: many deer in her area and why someone like you
- 13:45Speaker 1: helping out was a service to her. So I'd be
- 13:47Speaker 1: curious if Taylor, you could expand on you know, how
- 13:50Speaker 1: hunting in urban areas like this can help solve other
- 13:52Speaker 1: people's problems. But then also can you give us a
- 13:55Speaker 1: little bit of your spiel on why you like doing
- 13:58Speaker 1: this so much like why is this also a great
- 13:59Speaker 1: thing or hunter? Yeah? Well so, um, you know the
- 14:05Speaker 1: dear present difference different individuals based on you know, those
- 14:11Speaker 1: individuals certain circumstances and and uh kind of outlook on everything.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But generally speaking, our area has an insane overpopulation and
- 14:22Speaker 1: white tailed deer and to the point where they're unable
- 14:26Speaker 1: to quantify how bad the overpopulation is. So the average
- 14:32Speaker 1: carrying capacity according to the state biologists, of how many
- 14:36Speaker 1: gears should be in our area, because I mean we
- 14:38Speaker 1: have relatively like mediocre hardwoods, right, there's really there's no
- 14:42Speaker 1: agg there's no supporting brows other than just woody brows
- 14:48Speaker 1: and um in landscaping, which we can touch on later.
- 14:51Speaker 1: But I mean basically, the caring capacity in our area
- 14:56Speaker 1: is ten twelve deer per square um, so many deer
- 15:01Speaker 1: that when they do a study they can't count them.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They're getta mixed up. It literally looks like you kick
- 15:07Speaker 1: the ant hill and their best guests is that there
- 15:11Speaker 1: are four and twenty four mile so you know you
- 15:19Speaker 1: had met bowling hills and gets and that's exactly right
- 15:21Speaker 1: there their pockets where there are just so many deer.
- 15:25Speaker 1: It's insane and they are eating everything. They've decimated their
- 15:30Speaker 1: brows to the point where if you get down and
- 15:34Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys even noticed this or
- 15:35Speaker 1: we kind of talked about it, but if you get
- 15:37Speaker 1: down at like five ft six ft or four ft
- 15:41Speaker 1: even and you look, you can see as far as
- 15:44Speaker 1: the topography will let you. Because the deer of eating
- 15:47Speaker 1: everything that they're able to get their mouths on, whether
- 15:50Speaker 1: it's palatable or not. Um So they destroy landscaping. They
- 15:55Speaker 1: cause a lot of issues with you know, people wanting
- 15:58Speaker 1: to plant stuff. You really can't plant anything, uh, And
- 16:01Speaker 1: they cause a huge danger two motorists and people on
- 16:06Speaker 1: the on the roadways. So why is that great for
- 16:09Speaker 1: bow hunters. Well, we've taken mediocre habitat and with urban sprawl,
- 16:16Speaker 1: we've replaced it with lush, fertilized grass and landscaping and
- 16:20Speaker 1: stuff the stars can eat on. And we've taken away
- 16:25Speaker 1: I'm doing air quotes now, but a traditional hunting habitat,
- 16:29Speaker 1: and we've replaced it with these subdivisions and homewers associations.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And because of that, people are not comfortable hunting in
- 16:38Speaker 1: those environments, and it really creates a lot of hunting
- 16:43Speaker 1: opportunity and a very target rich environment. Hence the former
- 16:47Speaker 1: in twenty plus deer for a square mile for people
- 16:50Speaker 1: that want to climb a tree and shoot stuff with
- 16:53Speaker 1: a bow and arrow. So, is there a lot of
- 16:55Speaker 1: red tape a on it? Absolutely? Is there a lot
- 16:58Speaker 1: of barriers to entry and you know laws that you
- 17:02Speaker 1: need to read through and kind of navigate these land
- 17:05Speaker 1: mines through. However, if you do it, you are rewarded
- 17:10Speaker 1: with an endless dear season where you can hunt three
- 17:14Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five days a year and shoot as
- 17:17Speaker 1: many antler lists dear as you want. And um, the
- 17:22Speaker 1: absolute icing on the cake for me is like, I'm
- 17:25Speaker 1: a big guy, but even I can't eat all the
- 17:28Speaker 1: deer that I shoot in the year. And so we're
- 17:29Speaker 1: able as hunters to take these deer and feed the
- 17:33Speaker 1: homeless with them and you know, just take them to
- 17:36Speaker 1: a butcher, drop them off the butcher process of them.
- 17:39Speaker 1: There's no fee to the hunter, and that food goes
- 17:42Speaker 1: to food banks and people in needs. So it's a
- 17:44Speaker 1: really fantastic use of overabundant resource to help people that
- 17:50Speaker 1: need it. Yeah, it's it's like you said, it's a
- 17:54Speaker 1: win win, it's a win for hunters, it's a wind
- 17:57Speaker 1: for landowners, it's a wind for the habitat out there.
- 18:00Speaker 1: It's a win for the dear population to become at
- 18:03Speaker 1: least hopefully a little bit in more in balance. Um So,
- 18:07Speaker 1: so let's rewind back to where I kind of was
- 18:10Speaker 1: triggered this idea, which was going to this homeowner's place,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and we visited with this gale, this this this woman
- 18:17Speaker 1: and her husband, and kind of heard their story and
- 18:20Speaker 1: this set up kind of paint a picture. Is just
- 18:23Speaker 1: a really nice, really nice big home with a couple
- 18:28Speaker 1: acre grassy yard, and these folks probably owned I don't
- 18:32Speaker 1: know what is it, three acres, maybe Taylor something like that,
- 18:35Speaker 1: with maybe two acres or acre and a half yard
- 18:38Speaker 1: and then an acre and a half of woods kind
- 18:40Speaker 1: of edging around it, kind of dropping down a little
- 18:43Speaker 1: point um and they had I don't know, there were
- 18:47Speaker 1: some oak trees, there was some landscaping. While we were
- 18:51Speaker 1: up there talking to the owners, there were deer feeding
- 18:55Speaker 1: in the yard on I can't remember what they're feeding them,
- 18:57Speaker 1: but they're feeding on something. Um that kind of place,
- 19:01Speaker 1: you know, a big yard, a little bit of woods
- 19:03Speaker 1: butting up into a little bit larger section of kind
- 19:06Speaker 1: of scattered timber and stuff. Is that kind of the
- 19:10Speaker 1: average kind of place you hunt, Taylor, Or if not,
- 19:12Speaker 1: can you kind of paint a picture for people of
- 19:15Speaker 1: the types of places that you might hunt in a
- 19:17Speaker 1: suburban environment like this? Absolutely, so that that piece of
- 19:22Speaker 1: property was uh and in the du shell exactly like
- 19:29Speaker 1: my typical standard property. So in northern Virginia, pretty much
- 19:34Speaker 1: every bit of developable land has been developed. There are
- 19:38Speaker 1: no pieces or I'm never gonna say never, but there
- 19:41Speaker 1: are very few, if any pieces of ground that are
- 19:45Speaker 1: subdividable to the point where you can build out houses
- 19:49Speaker 1: on them. Basically farms or properties that you would want
- 19:52Speaker 1: to seek out and hunt the areas that are left
- 19:56Speaker 1: over our areas that are undevelopable. So the property that
- 20:01Speaker 1: we were hunting had a point that dropped down into
- 20:03Speaker 1: some woods that that property owner doesn't own, but a
- 20:07Speaker 1: lot of deer bed in there and come up into
- 20:09Speaker 1: their field. Well, there's a big creak in there, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: that's why you can't build houses there. So that's a
- 20:14Speaker 1: very typical property that I hunt. Or maybe like a
- 20:18Speaker 1: creek bottom or a floodplaine that's between a bunch of houses.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And if you kind of look at an aerial map
- 20:26Speaker 1: and look from like a fifteen thousand foot view, you
- 20:31Speaker 1: can start to see these floodplains and see these these
- 20:35Speaker 1: undeveloped areas between all these houses. And and for a
- 20:40Speaker 1: guy like me who's been doing this for a long time,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you can, to me, that looks like a road map, right,
- 20:46Speaker 1: That's where I'm seeing deer movement, and those are the
- 20:49Speaker 1: areas that I'm keying in on hunting a bunch. And
- 20:52Speaker 1: that's my kind of standard area. So a yard or
- 20:56Speaker 1: some some little trunk of timber that backs into a
- 20:59Speaker 1: cree bottom or you know, somewhat goes into places of
- 21:06Speaker 1: where deer would bed or travel or feed. And at
- 21:10Speaker 1: the end of the day, like that's what deer are
- 21:11Speaker 1: doing their betting for security. They're traveling and they're eating, right,
- 21:15Speaker 1: and they're not going to be in places that they
- 21:17Speaker 1: can't do that uninterrupted or or somewhat um without the
- 21:22Speaker 1: ability to move somewhat freely. Yeah. So so let's stive
- 21:26Speaker 1: in that a little bit further, Taylor, Because that first
- 21:29Speaker 1: day we showed up at this person's house, we chatted
- 21:31Speaker 1: for a while, and then we came back the next
- 21:34Speaker 1: day to do this hunt. And as we were basically
- 21:40Speaker 1: you were gonna hunt, I was going to fall behind
- 21:42Speaker 1: you and climb up in a tree with you and
- 21:44Speaker 1: just watch what you do and kind of pick your
- 21:47Speaker 1: brand and all those things. As we are going through
- 21:49Speaker 1: all that, you kind of ran through a couple key
- 21:52Speaker 1: concepts are like really really important things that are unique
- 21:55Speaker 1: to hunting in suburban environments. Um, can you kind of
- 22:00Speaker 1: walk us through what you think those very most important
- 22:03Speaker 1: things are when it comes to hunting in an urban
- 22:07Speaker 1: environment like this? Like what stood out to me. I'm
- 22:10Speaker 1: just to put a couple of things in your radar.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Maybe you've got some other things you want to mention,
- 22:13Speaker 1: But you kept talking about the bubble. You were describing
- 22:16Speaker 1: something as the bubble and how important it was not
- 22:18Speaker 1: to go inside the bubble. So that would be something
- 22:20Speaker 1: I'd love to hear you talk about a little bit more.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And then another thing that stuck with me was you
- 22:25Speaker 1: continued you constantly discussed and talked about how deer within
- 22:30Speaker 1: these areas kind of move like water flows through a stream.
- 22:35Speaker 1: And and that was helpful for me as I was
- 22:37Speaker 1: thinking about where should I set up in these kinds
- 22:39Speaker 1: of zones, or how should I think about how deer
- 22:41Speaker 1: will move between this yard and that yard and this
- 22:43Speaker 1: clearing in this thicket. Um, those are two things that
- 22:47Speaker 1: stood out to me. Could you expand on those two?
- 22:49Speaker 1: And then if you remember any of the other important
- 22:52Speaker 1: things that we walked through on that first kind of
- 22:54Speaker 1: trial run um kind of the main most important how
- 22:58Speaker 1: twos of hunting these places from your perspective, Yeah, for sure.
- 23:02Speaker 1: So the bubble is the most important aspect of successfully
- 23:08Speaker 1: hunting urban deer and really dear in general. I think
- 23:12Speaker 1: you can apply what I refer to as the bubble
- 23:17Speaker 1: very effectively too. But I mean, basically, deer are very
- 23:22Speaker 1: very good at adapting uh to a new area and
- 23:27Speaker 1: and kind of surviving, and they know exactly where the
- 23:33Speaker 1: humans go and where they don't go. So using the
- 23:36Speaker 1: same property that we're talking about, there's a grassy field,
- 23:39Speaker 1: what we call it a field's receptic field. You know,
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's probably eighty yards long, maybe a hundred yards long,
- 23:45Speaker 1: by thirty five yards wide forty yards wide, drops down
- 23:49Speaker 1: into a creek bottom. Well, those deer know that those homeowners,
- 23:53Speaker 1: they might come out there on the deck, they might
- 23:55Speaker 1: move around a little bit and you know, like what
- 23:58Speaker 1: you were talking about before, when we stood on a deck,
- 24:00Speaker 1: those deer were feeding right there. No problem. Now if
- 24:04Speaker 1: we have walked down off the deck and walked towards them,
- 24:07Speaker 1: they would have run off because we would have entered
- 24:09Speaker 1: kind of their bubble. And the same thing is true
- 24:12Speaker 1: where those deer know that if you're up in the yard,
- 24:14Speaker 1: you're fine. If you enter the woods, well that's rare,
- 24:17Speaker 1: Like not a lot of people are entering the woods here.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Now we've triggered their their predatory prey type response, and
- 24:25Speaker 1: they're gonna they're gonna get out of there. So it's
- 24:28Speaker 1: very important to figure out where those dear I think
- 24:32Speaker 1: that bubble is, where the human interaction bubble is, and
- 24:37Speaker 1: try to get as close to the edge of it
- 24:39Speaker 1: without instruding too far into it to trigger that response,
- 24:44Speaker 1: but still get yourself in a position where you're able
- 24:47Speaker 1: to shoot a deer. And so that comes from doing
- 24:50Speaker 1: your scouting, doing your homework, figuring out how those deer
- 24:53Speaker 1: are moving. And that's where we were talking about kind
- 24:56Speaker 1: of like these deer move like water, where you know
- 24:59Speaker 1: they're gonna move through an area that has the path
- 25:02Speaker 1: of least resistance. To them just like water does. And
- 25:05Speaker 1: I think you and I were talking about how you're
- 25:07Speaker 1: a big fisherman, and that really resonated with you because
- 25:10Speaker 1: it's the same way that you look at gear moving
- 25:14Speaker 1: or excuse me, fish moving or feeding when they're kind
- 25:17Speaker 1: of waiting behind a bullet or whatnot. Right and and um,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you know, I I like to look at the property
- 25:25Speaker 1: from an aerial view and make a educated guess as
- 25:28Speaker 1: to how I think deer going to move to these
- 25:31Speaker 1: connected areas, because the deer kind of like to run
- 25:35Speaker 1: a circuit. The deer always getting bumped around there. You know.
- 25:39Speaker 1: They might be because the landscapers are out there. Might
- 25:41Speaker 1: be because you know, the dogs off leash and running
- 25:44Speaker 1: after them, or something spooked them, whatever it is. They
- 25:48Speaker 1: seem to kind of always be moving through their home range.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And that home range is pretty large, um. And so
- 25:56Speaker 1: what they're doing is there if you look from above
- 26:00Speaker 1: and you can see those connected chunks there, that's where
- 26:03Speaker 1: deer are going to flow, much like a water pipe
- 26:06Speaker 1: or a creek or however you want to, um think
- 26:09Speaker 1: about it yourself to to you know, make that analogy stick.
- 26:13Speaker 1: But I like to think of it like water. And
- 26:15Speaker 1: I try to find where that water is flowing and
- 26:18Speaker 1: and get to a spot where I can do my homework,
- 26:21Speaker 1: get permission, and and then get in there um. And
- 26:25Speaker 1: that's where doing your homework and trying to figure out
- 26:28Speaker 1: where that bubble is is the next best thing. I
- 26:31Speaker 1: think that a lot of people try to dive in
- 26:33Speaker 1: and find a spot that they think looks really deery,
- 26:37Speaker 1: or a spot that you know traditionally is where you
- 26:40Speaker 1: were hunts, and that's where they go wrong because by
- 26:44Speaker 1: the time you get to the tree that's quote unquote deary,
- 26:47Speaker 1: you've blown this deer out of it. There, Like those
- 26:49Speaker 1: deer sitting there, they're watching you. As soon as you
- 26:51Speaker 1: cross thee their bubble, they're gone. And I think a
- 26:54Speaker 1: really good example of that was where we actually hunted
- 26:57Speaker 1: that first night, right because we talked out our access
- 27:01Speaker 1: and how we walked in there. I knew where the
- 27:03Speaker 1: deerer bedding, I knew what they could see and what
- 27:06Speaker 1: they couldn't see. And we picked a tree that was
- 27:09Speaker 1: right on the edge of the yard overlooking that point
- 27:13Speaker 1: where we thought those deer, we're we're going to come
- 27:16Speaker 1: up the point into the yark um. And that spot
- 27:20Speaker 1: probably didn't look good traditionally for you guys being normal hunters,
- 27:26Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah, I mean I'm not normally looking
- 27:30Speaker 1: for a tree inside a yard, that's for sure. I
- 27:34Speaker 1: would I would have wanted to go further down that
- 27:37Speaker 1: point probably. Um, But your point is, your point is
- 27:41Speaker 1: a good one about understanding the bubble, and and that
- 27:44Speaker 1: really ended up being pretty key the whole week when
- 27:47Speaker 1: you would see what these deer learned to accept and
- 27:51Speaker 1: what they learned not to accept, and being right on
- 27:54Speaker 1: that side, right there in the edge of the yard
- 27:55Speaker 1: allows you to you know, not go past and into
- 27:59Speaker 1: their danger zone. Um. So yeah, I mean it made
- 28:02Speaker 1: sense once you described it, and then we'll shoot. I
- 28:06Speaker 1: mean we climbed up in that tree, and it kind
- 28:09Speaker 1: of worked in a lot of ways, kind of just
- 28:11Speaker 1: how you would expect it to, both the good and
- 28:15Speaker 1: the bad. I mean, I think that night you described
- 28:18Speaker 1: it as kind of the perfect example of what an
- 28:21Speaker 1: urban hunt can be like, right, Yeah. I mean we
- 28:25Speaker 1: got we walked in to the sound of mowers and
- 28:30Speaker 1: just ripping. I mean there were mowmowers everywhere and were
- 28:37Speaker 1: a couple of houses away, and I thought that was
- 28:40Speaker 1: because actually it was going to push the deer over
- 28:42Speaker 1: towards us, and then you know again the deer and
- 28:45Speaker 1: nother bubble. They're very comfortable with people mowing grass and
- 28:50Speaker 1: blow and leaves. I really try to go in for
- 28:52Speaker 1: an afternoon hunt when I know the landscapers are there. Um.
- 28:57Speaker 1: The deer really like to eat grass that have had
- 29:02Speaker 1: leaves on top of them that they are freshly blown off,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Like they will run in after landscapers leaves, uh, that
- 29:09Speaker 1: have just finished one leaves. So I try to keep
- 29:12Speaker 1: their schedules and know where they're gonna come by. And
- 29:14Speaker 1: I try to donate a lot of deer to to
- 29:16Speaker 1: those different h employees of those places so that they'll
- 29:20Speaker 1: tell me when they're going to properties that they know
- 29:23Speaker 1: I hunt. Try and create something sent up for them
- 29:25Speaker 1: to let me know um when they're going, and kind
- 29:28Speaker 1: of built some camaraderie and team teamwork there. But um,
- 29:31Speaker 1: we walked into a lot of mowers blowing, which was
- 29:34Speaker 1: great cover. We climbed up. We we took a path
- 29:38Speaker 1: that we've probably most people wouldn't take. We kind of
- 29:41Speaker 1: hung around the side of the property and kept some
- 29:44Speaker 1: bushes between us and where we expected the deer to
- 29:48Speaker 1: be betting and uh, most people probably walk right down
- 29:51Speaker 1: the middle of that yard. And then we climbed the
- 29:54Speaker 1: tree right on the edge, and uh, you know, justin
- 29:58Speaker 1: you guys got set up and we thought we were
- 30:01Speaker 1: in good shape. And then mowers got closer and closer,
- 30:05Speaker 1: and then we saw some guys cutting grass and property,
- 30:10Speaker 1: riding their mower up and down, and then finally they stopped,
- 30:15Speaker 1: and almost as soon as they stopped, the geer started moving. Yeah,
- 30:21Speaker 1: it seemed like that was going to be the dinner bell.
- 30:24Speaker 1: The mowers stopped. You spotted I think it was you
- 30:28Speaker 1: who spotted some deer down the bottom, and then they
- 30:31Speaker 1: started moving our way, and they were kind of heading
- 30:34Speaker 1: up this There was a couple of little ditches of
- 30:37Speaker 1: sorts or kind of draws that were on either side
- 30:40Speaker 1: of this yard. And you described how likely these deer
- 30:43Speaker 1: either come right up the point or move across the
- 30:46Speaker 1: edge of one of these drainages across in front of us.
- 30:48Speaker 1: You and I were sitting in a tree together, and
- 30:50Speaker 1: they started going that way, and then well what happened there?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Did they was that when they were coming our way
- 30:56Speaker 1: and then something spooked him and they ran off. Was
- 30:58Speaker 1: that it was that that encounter they just spooked out
- 31:02Speaker 1: of nowhere. They were, I mean pretty close to being
- 31:07Speaker 1: in green Light string Dunk territory. Um they were. They
- 31:13Speaker 1: just needed to come cross out from some bushes, um.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And I think Justine, you probably had the best view
- 31:20Speaker 1: of them based on your angle and where they were working.
- 31:23Speaker 1: But for whatever reason, they just turned inside out and
- 31:26Speaker 1: they were behind the bushes, but they clearly did not
- 31:28Speaker 1: see us. Maybe the thermal started dropping. I mean that
- 31:31Speaker 1: was pretty close to sunset, so it's possible. But they
- 31:35Speaker 1: got the heck out of dodge and and blew out
- 31:39Speaker 1: of there. And that's again a really good example of
- 31:43Speaker 1: how did your react with their bubble is breached? Right?
- 31:46Speaker 1: I mean, those deer did not question it. They you know,
- 31:51Speaker 1: a lot of people assumed that because you're hunting in
- 31:54Speaker 1: the suburbs, you can get away with a lot of
- 31:57Speaker 1: human scent. The deer used to smelling humans. But they're
- 32:01Speaker 1: smelling the humans and so when they smell them and
- 32:04Speaker 1: then they get that visual identification, they're like, okay, I
- 32:07Speaker 1: smell Mr Johnson on his porch. That's fine. Well, if
- 32:11Speaker 1: they get a really strong sniff of human and they
- 32:15Speaker 1: had no idea where where that human is that's what
- 32:18Speaker 1: triggers them into a very you know, predatory prey type response,
- 32:23Speaker 1: and they'll they'll booker exactly like those deer did. Um
- 32:27Speaker 1: and I thought we were done for. But then we
- 32:30Speaker 1: had a handful of deer come from where they really
- 32:34Speaker 1: should not have come from, which were between the two
- 32:37Speaker 1: houses where the motors had just been. So who knows
- 32:40Speaker 1: if if those are gotten kicked up or something from
- 32:44Speaker 1: the from the neighbors. But they circled around and always
- 32:49Speaker 1: got shot off. But they were like thirty three thirty
- 32:53Speaker 1: four yards out, and uh, just we weren't going to
- 32:56Speaker 1: send it at dusk at thirty four yards on a
- 32:59Speaker 1: super alert does so sometimes the best shot that you
- 33:03Speaker 1: can take in the suburbs is not taking the shot
- 33:06Speaker 1: because um, you know, and we talked about this some
- 33:10Speaker 1: hunting small properties. Marsian ship is is key. Yeah, I
- 33:14Speaker 1: mean that that was one of the most important things
- 33:16Speaker 1: that you impressed upon me, was just how you know,
- 33:19Speaker 1: there's there's no room for error when you're bow hunting
- 33:23Speaker 1: in the suburbs because any little mistake, anything that's not
- 33:26Speaker 1: a perfect shot, can lead to a lot of challenges.
- 33:40Speaker 1: You kind of ran me through some rules, some things
- 33:43Speaker 1: that you you know you do when it comes to
- 33:45Speaker 1: like choosing the kinds of shots you'll take in this environment.
- 33:48Speaker 1: You even talked about some gear considerations. Can you walk
- 33:51Speaker 1: me through that stuff? What those how you think about
- 33:55Speaker 1: max range or the types of shots you take and
- 33:57Speaker 1: and all of that. How's that unique in this environment? Absolutely? So.
- 34:02Speaker 1: The difference between a deer running forty yards and piling
- 34:06Speaker 1: up in a deer that's running a hundred and fifty
- 34:08Speaker 1: yards and piling up is night and day. That's the
- 34:11Speaker 1: difference between a quick recovery back to your truck, awesome
- 34:15Speaker 1: morning or evening hunt and knocking on three, four or
- 34:20Speaker 1: five doors, you know, eventually finding your deer, getting yelled
- 34:23Speaker 1: at by all those homeowners, and then eventually losing permission
- 34:27Speaker 1: on the property that you hunted from. Um So, it's
- 34:30Speaker 1: it's important that you're not just ten ringing deer. You're
- 34:34Speaker 1: hitting the twelve ring and you're putting them down absolutely
- 34:38Speaker 1: as fast as possible. I do not shoot deer unless
- 34:42Speaker 1: they are broad side or slightly quartered away, and I
- 34:46Speaker 1: do not shoot deer unless they are under twenty yards. Sometimes,
- 34:50Speaker 1: if there's a deer that is super calm and the
- 34:52Speaker 1: conditions are perfect, and I'm reading your body language. I
- 34:57Speaker 1: might shoot one at like twenty two or twenty five
- 35:00Speaker 1: yards max. But I will never ever ever shoot a
- 35:03Speaker 1: gear and not use my top pen um, just because
- 35:08Speaker 1: there is a lot of stuff that can happen between
- 35:13Speaker 1: a deer at eighteen yards and a dear at thirty
- 35:15Speaker 1: two yards. Can I make that shot? Absolutely? I'm a
- 35:18Speaker 1: boat nerd. I shoot at long distances all the time.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I have like an absolutely you know, insane tuning process, etcetera.
- 35:27Speaker 1: But it's just imperative that the deer that you shoot,
- 35:31Speaker 1: you hit right at the top of the heart. You
- 35:33Speaker 1: take out their lungs and they they were in fifteen
- 35:36Speaker 1: yards and pile up um. And for that, I'm shooting
- 35:40Speaker 1: insanely heavy arrow. Well, not insanely, I'm shoting a five
- 35:43Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five grain arrow, and I'm shooting a
- 35:47Speaker 1: very large cut on contact broadhead because what I'm trying
- 35:51Speaker 1: to do is blow through the absolute top of that heart.
- 35:55Speaker 1: If I can take out some of that front landing gear,
- 35:58Speaker 1: I love to do that so they snowplow and sad
- 36:01Speaker 1: of running dead on their feet. Um. And it's just
- 36:05Speaker 1: very important to to get the deer down as fast
- 36:09Speaker 1: as possible. There even some properties of the hunt where
- 36:13Speaker 1: I will put on a giant, expandable broadhead because I
- 36:17Speaker 1: know that I'm only gonna be taking a twelve yard
- 36:19Speaker 1: shot and I'm not gonna be hitting any bone, and
- 36:21Speaker 1: I need to put that giant coke can size hole
- 36:26Speaker 1: through the deer as opposed to a smaller fixed plate
- 36:31Speaker 1: type chopped. Yeah, and and that that whole line of Um,
- 36:39Speaker 1: this whole lesson, I guess is is definitely one that
- 36:42Speaker 1: stuck with me coming out of this hunt. Um, as
- 36:45Speaker 1: I had some experiences along these lines that proved a
- 36:48Speaker 1: lot of what you discussed to be true. Um, But
- 36:52Speaker 1: that night, I mean, you didn't take the shot in
- 36:53Speaker 1: that dough. She was a little too far to arrange,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and that was that was it. There was a good
- 36:57Speaker 1: lesson for us to learn to see you pass up
- 36:59Speaker 1: a shot there when she you know, it looked like
- 37:02Speaker 1: a great opportunity, but to your point, not a risk
- 37:04Speaker 1: worth taking. Um. Justin what did you think about that
- 37:08Speaker 1: first hunt, seeing Taylor set up, seeing Taylor's way of
- 37:12Speaker 1: going about things, Do anything stand out on that whole thing,
- 37:16Speaker 1: either with what he did or how the whole they went, Well,
- 37:20Speaker 1: It's it's interesting because, like you know, in our typical
- 37:26Speaker 1: hunting scenarios, there's like to you know, we go into
- 37:30Speaker 1: it knowing like we want to make an ethical shot,
- 37:33Speaker 1: we want to like do our due diligence, um to
- 37:39Speaker 1: put this animal down quick. But there is a level
- 37:42Speaker 1: of um angst that that I felt going into these
- 37:48Speaker 1: situations like that first night hunt. I mean, you you
- 37:53Speaker 1: have to break these properties down at such a micro
- 37:57Speaker 1: level that it's I mean it is like next level really,
- 38:02Speaker 1: because you know, if I go hunt a fifty acre
- 38:06Speaker 1: piece and I have some timber, and I know they're
- 38:10Speaker 1: going to uh food egg field over here, a food platter, whatever,
- 38:16Speaker 1: there's always like some padding, you know. And when we
- 38:21Speaker 1: went in that first night, you know, it was great
- 38:24Speaker 1: because we we had the blessing of these people to
- 38:26Speaker 1: be able to hunt there and hearing their story and knowing,
- 38:30Speaker 1: like one, like, these are real people's like daily lives
- 38:34Speaker 1: that are being like you know, pretty pretty heavily interrupted
- 38:38Speaker 1: um by the deer, which I don't experience that in
- 38:42Speaker 1: my day to day. So like it's a huge problem.
- 38:45Speaker 1: So you're you're really doing a good thing for these people,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and so going into their yard and knowing like okay,
- 38:52Speaker 1: well this like they have our back here. Um. And
- 38:56Speaker 1: but then when you get back there, it's like while
- 38:59Speaker 1: I ought to be easy, you know, like we're standing
- 39:01Speaker 1: there talking these deer at like twenty or thirty yards
- 39:05Speaker 1: like feeding there looking at us like at home, no way,
- 39:09Speaker 1: you know, and um, but you have like a three
- 39:15Speaker 1: anchor piece that is like mostly mode lawn in a house.
- 39:20Speaker 1: But there's such a micro level that this whole process
- 39:23Speaker 1: has to be out because like Taylor said, like you
- 39:28Speaker 1: you have to get in and you have to do
- 39:30Speaker 1: that right. And even like the way we were set
- 39:34Speaker 1: up that night, Um, you know, I think we had
- 39:37Speaker 1: three different trees, guys in three different trees, and like
- 39:42Speaker 1: those deer, uh they did exactly what you thought they
- 39:46Speaker 1: would do and using that to rain. But man, like
- 39:49Speaker 1: like you said that there was like zero tolerance for
- 39:53Speaker 1: anything out of the ordinary, which which was pretty surprising
- 39:58Speaker 1: to me. I'm thinking, like, you know, these people, Ali,
- 40:00Speaker 1: there's guys mowing all around us. But and that somehow
- 40:05Speaker 1: seemed really normal to these deer. But they come up
- 40:09Speaker 1: and like I really think what happened was at that
- 40:12Speaker 1: time and night that we did have some thermal shift
- 40:16Speaker 1: and it started to pull into that bottom and there
- 40:19Speaker 1: there was deer coming from like two different directions, and
- 40:22Speaker 1: there was one dough that just was like suit like
- 40:25Speaker 1: she just was on edge and she ended up like
- 40:29Speaker 1: alerting everything. But man, it's just like looking at that,
- 40:34Speaker 1: I mean that little chunk was like not not you
- 40:38Speaker 1: know what a quarter of an acre and that was
- 40:41Speaker 1: like the spot you know. So it's cool to see
- 40:45Speaker 1: like how fine tuned you have to be with your
- 40:48Speaker 1: wind in a yard that's like you know, like just
- 40:52Speaker 1: everything is so condensed. But um, it's cool because it
- 40:58Speaker 1: kind of takes it to another level because you don't
- 41:01Speaker 1: have the wiggle room. Like one, you got to be
- 41:04Speaker 1: on your game with your set and understanding your your
- 41:07Speaker 1: winning your thermals. But you also like have to you know,
- 41:12Speaker 1: like Taylor said, you can't be taken like thirty five
- 41:14Speaker 1: forty yard pokes idea like that, Um that are coming
- 41:18Speaker 1: in just like expecting something to be like wrong. You know, yeah,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I think that. I think what you said, the fact
- 41:26Speaker 1: that there's there's there's no padding, like there's no wiggle room.
- 41:29Speaker 1: That that is I think the overarching theme of everything,
- 41:32Speaker 1: like there's no room for error, whether it be with
- 41:35Speaker 1: how far you push in, whether that be with how
- 41:38Speaker 1: long shots you take, whether that be with how you
- 41:42Speaker 1: manage relationships. It seems like that, you know, it's just
- 41:47Speaker 1: the little things really matter in this kind of hunting environment,
- 41:50Speaker 1: which which brings us, I think kind of nicely to
- 41:53Speaker 1: what we had to do the next day, which was
- 41:57Speaker 1: this whole relationship side of things in a to a degree. Uh,
- 42:02Speaker 1: Now that I got to hunt with you, Taylor, once,
- 42:04Speaker 1: it was now up to me to try to go
- 42:06Speaker 1: and do it on my own and get my own permission,
- 42:10Speaker 1: to see if I could get my own permission at least. Um,
- 42:12Speaker 1: you had some spots that I could hunt, but I
- 42:14Speaker 1: wanted to try to get my own spots to to
- 42:17Speaker 1: kind of have the whole experience. Um. So that morning
- 42:20Speaker 1: we went over to your house and kind of walk
- 42:22Speaker 1: through your best ideas, like your best practices for knocking
- 42:25Speaker 1: on doors, for finding spots, um, kind of the Tailor
- 42:29Speaker 1: Chamberlain approach to getting hunting permission. So I ran through
- 42:32Speaker 1: that whole deal with you, and then I took off
- 42:34Speaker 1: on my own. You want to give us cliff notes
- 42:37Speaker 1: on some of your hot tips for getting permission in
- 42:41Speaker 1: these kinds of places before I discuss how my attempts
- 42:44Speaker 1: actually went. Yeah, so, um, in in our area in
- 42:51Speaker 1: northern Virginia, people tend to be very abrasive. You know,
- 42:55Speaker 1: it's the city man, like, you're not you you don't
- 42:58Speaker 1: have this communal neighborhood where you're like really good buddies
- 43:03Speaker 1: with your neighbors. Most people don't want you at their drawer.
- 43:06Speaker 1: They don't know why you're there. And so to build
- 43:09Speaker 1: rapport instantly, I mean it's really no different than any
- 43:12Speaker 1: other type of sales. You're just selling yourself instead of
- 43:17Speaker 1: selling a product. Um, And so you know, if you
- 43:21Speaker 1: can try to build instant rapport, just try to communicate clearly,
- 43:27Speaker 1: and the biggest key is to just not be intimidated.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Like if you're confident in yourself and what you're saying,
- 43:35Speaker 1: people will believe in you and they'll understand and and
- 43:39Speaker 1: you know, I try to not have emotional conversations with
- 43:43Speaker 1: people about the gear because emotions you can't control on somebody. Um.
- 43:48Speaker 1: You know, we all feel differently about lots of different things,
- 43:52Speaker 1: and the three of us are very like minded people
- 43:54Speaker 1: on this call, But I'm sure that there are things
- 43:56Speaker 1: that we could talk about that all three of us
- 43:58Speaker 1: are very passionately, you know, opposed to how we feel
- 44:02Speaker 1: about things. But you can't argue with facts, and so
- 44:06Speaker 1: I try to very softly and not ambrasively state my
- 44:11Speaker 1: facts interlineated with the service that I'm providing and explain
- 44:16Speaker 1: why it's important, and um, you know, I do that
- 44:20Speaker 1: kind of socratically by asking a lot of questions and
- 44:23Speaker 1: just try to build report. And then also it's all
- 44:26Speaker 1: relationship building. And I think you guys got to see
- 44:29Speaker 1: some of the relationships that I've built with these homeowners
- 44:34Speaker 1: and the report that I have with them, and you know,
- 44:37Speaker 1: by doing that, you're able to then build kind of
- 44:39Speaker 1: a referral based network and have the clients that you
- 44:43Speaker 1: have reach out on behalf of you to their friends.
- 44:47Speaker 1: And that's where getting permission like this really snowballs, because
- 44:52Speaker 1: even if you do knock on a thousand doors, you
- 44:54Speaker 1: get to communicate clearly with those people, hunt them appropriately,
- 45:00Speaker 1: provide a quality service for them, and and I guarantee
- 45:04Speaker 1: you one thousand percent guarantee you at some point very
- 45:09Speaker 1: soon that homeowner will ask you what can I do
- 45:12Speaker 1: to thank you? And you say, hey, just tell all
- 45:14Speaker 1: your friends that you know what I'm doing and give
- 45:18Speaker 1: them my number. To this day, I get more phone
- 45:22Speaker 1: calls in a week of properties than I can hunt.
- 45:26Speaker 1: And there are people asking me to come over and
- 45:29Speaker 1: hunt their properties because somebody that I hunted on their
- 45:33Speaker 1: property of told them about me. And much like anything
- 45:37Speaker 1: else in life, you know, a referral from somebody that
- 45:40Speaker 1: is a trust and source carries an unquantifiable weight with it.
- 45:45Speaker 1: You know, if if you guys were somewhere and I said, oh, hey,
- 45:48Speaker 1: you gotta go try this, you know Irish restaurant, You're
- 45:51Speaker 1: gonna go there probably without even thinking about it, right,
- 45:54Speaker 1: You're just gonna be like, oh, te are some of
- 45:55Speaker 1: those place is awesome? Like I'm gonna go there, and
- 45:58Speaker 1: it's it's no different than anything else. Doctors and service providers,
- 46:02Speaker 1: and you know I'm a service provider. I just I'm
- 46:05Speaker 1: more of an exterminator than a than an attorney or
- 46:08Speaker 1: a doctor. But yeah, you know, service is being provided.
- 46:13Speaker 1: That's that's needed. So builder poor and and speak confidently
- 46:18Speaker 1: and and not facts. And there's some data that supports
- 46:21Speaker 1: your case. Because you can't argue with data, you can't
- 46:25Speaker 1: argue with math. You can argue with feelings and you
- 46:27Speaker 1: will lose that argument ten times out of time. Yeah, yeah,
- 46:31Speaker 1: that's a that's a good way to kind of sum
- 46:34Speaker 1: it all up, Taylor, and I tried to take the
- 46:39Speaker 1: approach that I've used knocking on doors in more rural
- 46:42Speaker 1: areas and and kind of combine that with some of
- 46:45Speaker 1: the stuff you said. And a couple of things that
- 46:47Speaker 1: stuck with me were the fact that you kept telling
- 46:50Speaker 1: me to make sure you answer their questions before they
- 46:53Speaker 1: have them, and do it quickly, like, don't give them
- 46:55Speaker 1: an opportunity to object before you're able to lay out
- 46:59Speaker 1: the base sick important things, you know, the basic important
- 47:02Speaker 1: things being why you're there, how you're gonna do this safely,
- 47:06Speaker 1: and what problem you're solving. I think of those are
- 47:09Speaker 1: the main things I was trying to get across, UM,
- 47:11Speaker 1: and I really tried to try to distill it down
- 47:15Speaker 1: into a tight, short, quick and succinct kind of introduction
- 47:19Speaker 1: and explanation. Um. Sometimes when I'm knocking on doors in
- 47:23Speaker 1: the middle of the country, you know, I think people
- 47:25Speaker 1: out there prefer a little bit more winding approach. A
- 47:28Speaker 1: lot of these people are like inviting you into their
- 47:30Speaker 1: homes and asking you to have a bite to eat,
- 47:33Speaker 1: and they just want to talk to someone. I didn't
- 47:36Speaker 1: see that. Yeah, people like do you see the lad
- 47:41Speaker 1: bad banking man? We wanted to what do you Why
- 47:43Speaker 1: are you here? I mean a lot of people will
- 47:45Speaker 1: answer to say what do you want? Yeah, I'm like, hey,
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'm Taylor, break down the street. I'm not selling anything.
- 47:51Speaker 1: I you know, I'm here to solve a problem for
- 47:54Speaker 1: you for free. You're welcome, and because it's going away,
- 48:00Speaker 1: just trying to create some sort of incentive there to
- 48:03Speaker 1: get their attention before they just think that you're some
- 48:08Speaker 1: salesman or you're trying to get in their pocket. You know,
- 48:10Speaker 1: when you're making somebody's doorbell, they are very defensive. You know,
- 48:14Speaker 1: why are you here? What do you want? You're trying
- 48:16Speaker 1: to get my money, You're trying to ask me for something.
- 48:19Speaker 1: You're interrupting me at some point of my day. You
- 48:22Speaker 1: know that they're they're they're very much on their heels.
- 48:25Speaker 1: And so I try to do a lot of things
- 48:27Speaker 1: and you hit the nail on the head. I try
- 48:28Speaker 1: to answer their questions before they asked them, and and
- 48:32Speaker 1: that makes something very confident. When you do that, you know,
- 48:35Speaker 1: like it's really no different than any other sales type tactic.
- 48:40Speaker 1: You're just selling yourself. Yeah. Yeah. So, uh so basically
- 48:45Speaker 1: at after you kind of ram me through all that stuff,
- 48:48Speaker 1: we went through and looked on Onyx and just pinned
- 48:51Speaker 1: a bunch of different houses that you thought had good
- 48:53Speaker 1: potential or were in areas where you've seen deer in
- 48:55Speaker 1: the past, and just some spots worth checking out. Um.
- 48:58Speaker 1: And then I hit the row and uh, it was
- 49:01Speaker 1: like I don't know, like a CI A covert mission
- 49:05Speaker 1: or something. I had Justin and Chase in the vent
- 49:08Speaker 1: or in the STV and we're driving like secret Service
- 49:11Speaker 1: black um Forward Expeditions or something, and uh Jason Justin
- 49:16Speaker 1: had the cameras, and then I was in the front
- 49:18Speaker 1: seat driving around and I don't know how many pins
- 49:21Speaker 1: I had, but I ended up gosh, do you remember
- 49:25Speaker 1: the number justin. I think it was something like twelve
- 49:29Speaker 1: or thirteen houses that okay, Yeah, so I ended up
- 49:33Speaker 1: going up to and asking for permission at thirteen places. Um.
- 49:40Speaker 1: And I'll tell you, the first thing that really stood
- 49:43Speaker 1: out to me about these places in these neighborhoods that
- 49:45Speaker 1: I was in was that not only are they kind
- 49:47Speaker 1: of in the city and you know, wham bam, thank
- 49:50Speaker 1: you man type people, but like they were all almost
- 49:53Speaker 1: all like mega mansions, like I've never been I don't
- 49:57Speaker 1: think I've been in a place like neighborhoods where there's
- 50:00Speaker 1: in such a concentration of of wealth and big, huge
- 50:05Speaker 1: homes like just everywhere, Like every little road you turned down,
- 50:09Speaker 1: it's like mega mansion, mega mansion, mega mansion. You go
- 50:11Speaker 1: down another way, here's a whole another slew of these places.
- 50:14Speaker 1: You go down another road, there's I mean, there's just everywhere.
- 50:17Speaker 1: And some of these places are just like way back,
- 50:19Speaker 1: like you drive down some like quarter mile or half
- 50:22Speaker 1: mile drive and gates here and gates there, and security
- 50:27Speaker 1: cameras everywhere, and then you come into this called the
- 50:30Speaker 1: sack that's a private calder sack with fountains in the
- 50:32Speaker 1: middle and like a private basketball court or basketball court.
- 50:36Speaker 1: And I mean, I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life, Taylor.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I think as when I was pulling up to some
- 50:43Speaker 1: of these people's houses and just thinking like, Okay, at
- 50:45Speaker 1: any point, like an armed guard is gonna apprehend me,
- 50:49Speaker 1: or someone's gonna be really upset that I'm back here.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I mean, was it very it's very typic and that's
- 50:56Speaker 1: where a lot of people, I think Paul short is.
- 50:59Speaker 1: You know, at the end of the day, it's a
- 51:01Speaker 1: numbers game, right, and I can network and use my
- 51:06Speaker 1: spiel and use the you know, the knowledge that I've
- 51:09Speaker 1: built over the last twelve plus. Ye're doing this but
- 51:14Speaker 1: for fourteen years now, jeez um, But there's just no
- 51:18Speaker 1: substitute for you know, trying to stay calm, and you
- 51:21Speaker 1: get those butterflies walking up to the door because I
- 51:24Speaker 1: still get them, and you gotta ask, and you gotta
- 51:27Speaker 1: knock on the door. And the thing that I always
- 51:29Speaker 1: tell myself when I'm at the driveway and I'm like
- 51:32Speaker 1: trying to talk myself out of that kind of that
- 51:35Speaker 1: that like devil on your shoulder and the angel on
- 51:37Speaker 1: the other shoulder kind of thing, is I just tell myself, Hey,
- 51:41Speaker 1: the answers already know, so you might as well ask
- 51:43Speaker 1: and verify, right, because unless you ask, the answer will
- 51:47Speaker 1: always be no. So effort, maybe you get it. Yes,
- 51:50Speaker 1: let's go come on. And and that's what I told
- 51:55Speaker 1: myself thousands of times a year to motivate me and
- 51:59Speaker 1: go walk down and bring the gate doorbell and um
- 52:04Speaker 1: and try to get permission. And you know, you just
- 52:06Speaker 1: have to be comfortable being told a lot of things
- 52:10Speaker 1: of of no, and all kinds of things about yourself
- 52:12Speaker 1: that aren't true or maybe they are, but you're gonna
- 52:17Speaker 1: hear a lot of stuff, and you just have to
- 52:19Speaker 1: keep reminding yourself like, hey man, the answer is gonna
- 52:22Speaker 1: be no unless you ask. So let's let's go verify it.
- 52:25Speaker 1: And and like keep on keeping on. And you know
- 52:29Speaker 1: the other thing to really consider, and I think we
- 52:32Speaker 1: talked about this, but don't ever rule out the property.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Don't ever go like, oh, that property is so big
- 52:38Speaker 1: and perfect. I bet you know. They always get asked
- 52:42Speaker 1: because I find it's kind of like the really hot
- 52:44Speaker 1: girls at the bar that everybody's so intimidated by them,
- 52:47Speaker 1: they're not talking right. And and so of course that
- 52:52Speaker 1: was a long time ago for me because I sit,
- 52:55Speaker 1: but um, when there's a property that looks really, really
- 52:58Speaker 1: really good, go try because again, like the answers, no
- 53:03Speaker 1: until you ask. And some of my best best properties,
- 53:07Speaker 1: I mean humongous properties are ones that I thought, there's
- 53:11Speaker 1: no way this is gonna work, kind of scoffing at myself,
- 53:14Speaker 1: and next you know, I'm like, holy smokes. I can't
- 53:17Speaker 1: believe I just ended up or you know whatever it
- 53:22Speaker 1: is right and in places is crong with deer, and
- 53:25Speaker 1: and then I have to figure out which one of
- 53:26Speaker 1: my buddies I can bring in to help manage the place. Right. So, um,
- 53:33Speaker 1: just never ever ever assume anything and go have a
- 53:37Speaker 1: conversation with people. And I try to give them my
- 53:39Speaker 1: phone number and just say, hey, if anything changes, give
- 53:42Speaker 1: me a call, right, because sometimes they'll call you back
- 53:45Speaker 1: and they'll say, hey, you know, I talked to my wife,
- 53:47Speaker 1: or I thought about it and or I started noticing
- 53:50Speaker 1: there are a ton of deer in my yard and
- 53:52Speaker 1: please come shoot them all. So you just never know
- 53:55Speaker 1: until you tried. I was with I was with you, Mark,
- 53:59Speaker 1: because nothing says don't talk to me, leave me alone,
- 54:03Speaker 1: like a like ten thousand dollar gate and cameras hanging
- 54:08Speaker 1: off of trees. Uh. The anxiety that you felt, I
- 54:13Speaker 1: think I told you was like it was just like
- 54:17Speaker 1: oozing out of that car, like everything every door, every
- 54:21Speaker 1: door you went to guys like, oh my gosh, I
- 54:25Speaker 1: want to throw up. Mark. You're on top of it,
- 54:30Speaker 1: because once you got permission, you then have to be like, oh,
- 54:33Speaker 1: by the way, these are my buddies with these really
- 54:37Speaker 1: nice cameras and they need to come with me. Also,
- 54:40Speaker 1: we need you to sign this whole other piece of
- 54:41Speaker 1: paper now, right, So that's like a mother layer. Um.
- 54:45Speaker 1: That was tough, and we tried to kind of talk
- 54:47Speaker 1: about some different angles of of how to appreict that
- 54:51Speaker 1: as well in a productive way. But at the end
- 54:53Speaker 1: of the day, like, people are different and and they
- 54:57Speaker 1: have different reasons for want of us shop here, and
- 55:00Speaker 1: you can never really assume either why they want you there.
- 55:04Speaker 1: You know, Um, I would be willing to to bet
- 55:09Speaker 1: that every property owner that I had permission on, either
- 55:13Speaker 1: they or one person removed from them that they know,
- 55:17Speaker 1: has either had limes disease or hit a deer with
- 55:21Speaker 1: their car. And and those are a lot of the
- 55:25Speaker 1: reasons that they're like and again we're back to how
- 55:28Speaker 1: to get permission. That's factual. It's like, yeah, Susie had
- 55:32Speaker 1: limes disease, or yes, like Becky hit a deer with
- 55:36Speaker 1: her car and totaled it, or Jim did you know whatever,
- 55:39Speaker 1: Like those are factual things they happen, and those are
- 55:42Speaker 1: things that point to overpopulation and and what we're trying
- 55:47Speaker 1: to take care of yea. Um, so so I tried
- 55:53Speaker 1: it and knocked on like you said justin doors. Um
- 56:00Speaker 1: you said that the anxiety was palpable. Justin Um what
- 56:06Speaker 1: did you think about? I mean, you watched me do
- 56:08Speaker 1: what I did? What did you think about? How went?
- 56:11Speaker 1: What do you think about my spiel? Uh? What stood
- 56:15Speaker 1: about that whole experience? Well, that was the closest I've
- 56:18Speaker 1: ever been to be in the Secret Service because I
- 56:22Speaker 1: had an I had a camera on you, but I
- 56:24Speaker 1: also had an earbud and and could hear every one
- 56:28Speaker 1: of your conversations and uh, you know, like when you
- 56:32Speaker 1: got back in the car, I was like, dude, like
- 56:34Speaker 1: I don't know how you're doing this, but if anybody
- 56:37Speaker 1: could do this, like you're the guy because um, you
- 56:42Speaker 1: know again you're immediately caught off guard because you're like
- 56:48Speaker 1: entering people's sanctuaries, you know, and then once you get
- 56:51Speaker 1: up there, they are like, wait, how did you get
- 56:54Speaker 1: in here? Kind of and but you know, like as
- 56:57Speaker 1: soon as you would start, uh, it was it was
- 57:01Speaker 1: just like great because you and I'm sure Taylor is
- 57:04Speaker 1: the same way, Like he he has like worked up
- 57:07Speaker 1: a speech that like he said the facts and and
- 57:11Speaker 1: you going into that, um you just like you you
- 57:17Speaker 1: knew what the you know, the issues that they're having.
- 57:20Speaker 1: These homeowners are knowing the same thing. Um. And when
- 57:24Speaker 1: you when they rejected you or they said no or uh,
- 57:28Speaker 1: like you were always like dead on with your your responses.
- 57:32Speaker 1: So I was like, I was, like, I said, you
- 57:35Speaker 1: were the guy to do that. I would have probably
- 57:37Speaker 1: quit after the first note and just like found in
- 57:40Speaker 1: McDonald's UM. But like, yeah, it was you know, it
- 57:45Speaker 1: wasn't It was encouraging because you know, in in this
- 57:50Speaker 1: outdoor world, we hear you know, you there's a lot
- 57:54Speaker 1: of people that have voices in that that can speak
- 57:57Speaker 1: into this industry or to our lifestyles that have no
- 58:03Speaker 1: idea what what it's like. And I think we were
- 58:07Speaker 1: at the some of those doors and it was great
- 58:10Speaker 1: to hear like the openness that people you know, they
- 58:15Speaker 1: would tell you know, but then you would have a
- 58:18Speaker 1: chance to then, um, explain what you were doing or
- 58:21Speaker 1: why you were doing it, and then hearing their rebuttals
- 58:25Speaker 1: and uh, their opinions and whatnot. Like I really think
- 58:29Speaker 1: that even though we got like a lot of nose um,
- 58:33Speaker 1: we also were able to kind of uh, you know,
- 58:40Speaker 1: maybe plant some seeds of like okay, like you know,
- 58:44Speaker 1: all these hunters are not the same, you know, And
- 58:47Speaker 1: here is another way we could think about, like possibly
- 58:51Speaker 1: attacking a situation where you know, my kid could get
- 58:56Speaker 1: lines disease in the yard like that. The first lady
- 58:59Speaker 1: said that she didn't want to have her grandkids over
- 59:02Speaker 1: because she doesn't want them to have like have to
- 59:05Speaker 1: play in a yard where there's ticks everywhere. Um. And
- 59:09Speaker 1: so even though we heard some nose like those might
- 59:12Speaker 1: be yeses for Taylor, you know and the future, because
- 59:16Speaker 1: of the conversations that you had again, I felt like
- 59:19Speaker 1: it was super informative, um, because there was a lot
- 59:25Speaker 1: of the information you're given out was like stuff that
- 59:28Speaker 1: these people probably had never heard. So I thought it
- 59:30Speaker 1: went really well despite all the knows that we got
- 59:33Speaker 1: really bring up a good point there justin and that
- 59:36Speaker 1: you know everybody well, again, I don't want to generalize
- 59:39Speaker 1: to say everyone. The majority of people that I talked
- 59:42Speaker 1: to have never ever met a hunch or before. And
- 59:48Speaker 1: so there are a lot of a lot of properties
- 59:50Speaker 1: that I had permission on that started with a no.
- 59:53Speaker 1: And and I always will ask like, well, why you know,
- 59:57Speaker 1: do you mind if I ask why the answers know,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: because I mean, now we're going down in flames, right,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Like the answer is no, so we might as well
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: put me downloading and uh but I mean and and
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: then when they say well, because it's barbaric or something,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: and you can say, well, you know, actually it's not,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: you can have a counterpoint to it. That's that's factual.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: And you know, what you'll find out is that a
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: lot of people have really no concept what hunting is about.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: And they understand, you know, right now. And it's very
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: common to be you know, cognizant of what you're eating too.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Maybe want to eat on the organic stuff or grass
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: bed or you know, non non hormonal stuff, and you're
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: going like, well, hey, I'm sorting organic protein my family, right,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: And and so what's different than me going to Whole
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Fuits and paying forty bucks a pound for bison or
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: me helping you remove these gear from your property and
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: feeding my family with them. Um, it's hard to our
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: do that, right. And and I've had many, many many
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: homeowners tell me, you know, once you get to know me,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: they'll say, you know, you're not what I expected. And
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: I want to asking them, like, what do you mean
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: by that, I know their answer. They expect elm or fun, right.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: They expect somebody that is, um, you know, the stereotypical
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: hunter and not somebody that they'd want to hang out
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: with and have a beer with and have a conversation with.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: And UM, you know, we're fortunate that we're getting to
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: kind of change people's perception of of hunters. And you
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: hit the nail on the head that we're not all
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: the same, Like, you know, we can be educated, it's
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: still hunt we can you know, we can do this
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: ethically and responsibly and um, in an appropriate manner. That's
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: beneficial for everybody. And it's really kind of cool to
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: watch people who have had never been experienced to hunting
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: figure that out. Yeah. I felt the same way. And
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I felt like even even with all those nose, I
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: felt that at least all of an opportunity to be
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: a positive light, to be to be like, uh, one
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: representative of the hunting community that they get to have
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: some kind of engagement with and if that can be
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: positive or surprisingly better than they expected or intriguing, you know,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I did something good there. So so yeah, I mean
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: there was there was a couple of people who were
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: you know that talked to who were you know who
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: described bad experiences they've had with past hunters. Uh. There
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: were a couple of people who were just like hesitant
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: about the whole thing in general. There was one person
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: that I went and talked to where the husband answered
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: the door, and he was very dismissive of it, like
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: he was. He was probably the most um agitated that
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I was there and like, what do you mean? What
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: what were you doing here? There's no problem? Why, there's no,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: there's not too many deer. Just he was like angry
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I was there. Um. But then his wife came up
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: behind him, and she, uh, she was very different. She
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: was really curious about it. She kept asking questions and
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: he was trying to push her off, not physically, but
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: I mean he was trying to be He was like, no, no, no,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: this is fine. He's like, no, well, let's just just Kevin,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: get out of here. Stop asking these questions. And she said, well,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I'm kind of curious, why why do you do this?
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: How do you do this? Or you do use a bow?
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Or this is legal? How do you guys? How do
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you guys manage these situations? And eventually he stormed out
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: of there, but every once in a while he like
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: yelled from the kitchen to like just close the door,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: just let's get back to what we're doing. He was
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: very irritated. And she stood there and asked me questions
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: for I don't know, minutes, fifteen minutes something like that. UM.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: And we ended up having I think a really productive conversation,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: and I think she left it, you know, having learned
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: some stuff. And she was like thanking me. She said, oh,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: this is really interesting, this is great to kind of
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: learn about this. UM. And then there was a handful
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: of people who were just kind of like they didn't care.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: They're kind of like, you know, I'm fine, I'm fine
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: with hunters, but I just don't want someone here to
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: just be a bother. I don't want to worry about
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: people around here. I've got a guy already, the hunts here. UM.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: There was a handful of types of things. It was
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: a handful of people that just weren't home. UM. And
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: there was you know, a handful of just said no
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: and that was it. UM. There was one guy who
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: was on a phone call. And this is kind of
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: like a longer story that I'll try to make short.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: But the night before or two nights before, we had
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: done like a drive around scouting as you guys are called,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: and we had spotted one house with like five bucks,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: like four or five six bucks feeding in the front yard,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: including one like really nice one. And so I had
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: come back to knock on that door and that guy
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: answered the door but was on the phone and he
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: kind of like waved me off. It's like come back later.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: So I was excited to hopefully get permission there, um.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: But ultimately I did get one yes. Um. There was
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: a couple who were kind of leaving their home to
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: go for a walk, and I walked up their driveway
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: as they were walking down and chatted with them, and
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: they were they were the perfect the perfect culprits and
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: that they were like, yeah, shoot them all, we've got
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: too many there, a nuisance, their trouble. Do whatever you
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: need to do. Um, And they were fine with us
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: filming and fine with us doing the whole deal. So
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: so I got the yes one out of one out
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: of thirteen. Um. But I'll tell you by the time
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: like we got that part done, I mean I was
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: just like shot. I was emotionally exhausted. It just like
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: there's like an emotional debt that you accrue every time
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you go through like the hype up, the walk to
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: the door or the knock on the door, the talking,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: the the yes or the know or whatever, like every
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: time you do that, regardless of how it goes. It
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: was just like each one was a little bit more exhaustion,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: a little bit more so after thirteen of them. I mean,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: you you tell me if this is true or not
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: justin but by the time we stopped for I guess
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: it was like a late lunch we stopped for. I mean,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I was just like a zombie. I could hardly even
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: like talk to anyone. Would you say, that's true? Absolutely,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: because I felt the same way, like I think, being
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: like hearing and and just like the flow, you know,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the up and down of all those conversations. It was
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: just like, yeah, I didn't really want to talk to anyone.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: I knew you didn't really want to talk to anyone
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: for a while. Well, yeah, when we got that, when
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: we got that, yes, it was like okay, like this
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: is what Taylor has been talking about, Like you know,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: there's here's people that that recognize the problem, and uh yeah,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: it really felt like a home run even it wiped
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: out all the notes, you know. Yeah, now one other
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: thing to point out back to that house with the
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: bucks on it, and we'll kind of speed through this
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: because it didn't end up working out. But Taylor, you
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: had like a friend of a friend who knew those people,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: and through a phone call we were able to get
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: a hold of them and they said that they would
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: be okay with us us hunting there. But I had
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: to go back and talk to the guy. And so
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: I went back and I knocked on the door again
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and he never answered, and then I waited outside and
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: then went back again and they never answered. And now
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: it's like three thirty or four or something. I don't
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: it's pretty late, and we're down to just not a
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: whole lot of time left before trying to hunt that night,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: and we were trying to get in a hunt UM,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: And so I ended up just bailing on that spot
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: and deciding to go and hunt a spot that you
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: had gotten permission on UM previously. That would be a
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: good one for us to get into quick since we didn't.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: We had to still this paperwork taken care of on
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: the place that I got permission on UM. So so
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: that was how we're gonna try to end up the
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: night was just to go to this new spot I've
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: never been to before. You drove us down there and
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: just kind of said like, hey, here's the access point, um,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: go for it, here's your property lines, um. And this
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: spot was was actually a little more normal feeling than
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: a lot of the other places that we saw. A
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: lot of the places that knocked on the doors, um
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: doors of um. This was kind of a I don't know,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: how would you describe this tail like a like a
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: just a big brushy bottom dur rainage kind of area
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: where there was houses up high and then this is
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: like a low area where just nobody was gonna build,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: right yeah. Yeah, So once that ran you see the gauntlet,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I actually could take you to some properties that are
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: really hunted. And yeah, it's a it's a big kind
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: of floodplain with a lot of houses up on the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: high ground and then that land in the middle there
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: that you were hunting on is just undevelopable. But it's
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: like super brushy, a lot of like thickets and poison
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: ivy and sumac I think justin call hell, so some
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: not always at bottom. I'm sorry to give me more
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of a head cup. But to be I did not
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: know where you were going, so we wanted it to
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: be not like a guiding hunt, more like a you know,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Mark figures out where to go. And so I just said, hey,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: park here and and go in. And I should have
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: warned you about the uh, the CIA operative that lives
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: next store, that is figuring out texting people randomly, but um, yeah,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: I mean it's just a big brushing floodplaint. And that
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: spot is fantastic because if you think about how the
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: water flows, again our analogy about where to find deer, like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: they're all getting pushed into that area from everywhere around there, right,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: And if you even looked at that spot and zoom
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: back out, you'd see that it's a giant crossroad of
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: a crossing. I mean, that's one of the better hubs
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: in the area that I hunt. And they are just
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: tons and tons of deer in there, including a couple
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: of pretty good bucks. And I think you saw one
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: that night, didn't you. Yeah? I did, and and so
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: you know, we we we parked and going in there.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I remember keeping in mind the two main points that
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: you had been preaching to me over and over again,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: which was one was thinking about all the water is
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: going to flow, you know, the metaphorical water. And then
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: number two, but most importantly was the bubble. So I
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I was looking at this stuff on the map, and
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I'm looking at this thick, brushy bottom and right in
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: front of me, and I'm thinking, Okay, I could get
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: right into the middle of this, I could be thinking
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: about what my winds doing and and pushed to the
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: opposite side. But I thought, man, I don't want to
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: breach the bubble. I don't. I don't know where the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: bubble is because I've never been here before. But I,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: you know, figured I need to be a little bit
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: more conservative than not. So I tried to find as
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: decent of the place as I get to without diving
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: deep into this place, because they could be better than
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: anywhere anywhere in there. And I remember thinking, like the
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: main things that I thought I could work off of
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: where that there was these there was this ridge that
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: ran on the neighbor's property, and two points that dropped
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: down off of that, And I've envisioned that, Okay, hypothetically,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: I bet you there could be oaks up on those ridges,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: and there could be acorns up there. So I thought
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: all right, they're very well could be deer either bedded
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: up on those points and then our dry popping down
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: into the bottom to get to the opposite side. Maybe
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: this food over there, so this might be a place
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: that they're dropping down to, or it could be the
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: opposite maybe dear coming for the other way, and they
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: might be going up those ridges to feed. So I thought, okay,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: if I can be tight to that, I might peple
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: intercept that movement. Secondly, there's a creek, and I remember
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: thinking to myself, all right, let's see if I could
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: find a creek crossing, and if I could be hunting
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: where there's a creek crossing and those points and what
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: looks like the edges with really good thick betty betting
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: kind of stuff, that might be three different potential you know, movement,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: lines of movement that I could take advantage of. Those
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: are the things that I was trying to key in
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: on with with just a very ah bird's eye view
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: of what I was dealing with. Having looked at the
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: map and walked in like seventy yards or something, we
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: didn't go very far in, but I found those threes,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: three things lining up, and I thought, okay, I think
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: this is worth, you know, trying, so you know, we
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: got set up. Justin was in one tree and me
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: and Chase weren't another. And sure enough, like an hour
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: before dark or something like that. Um, Justin was actually
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: the first one to see him because of your angle.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: He was. There was this really nice buck coming down
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: that creek and he got to the creek crossing. He
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: came all the way to the creek crossing, but was
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: on the other side of it, so he was on
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the one side. He was at forty yards and if
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: he crossed the creek where the crossing was towards me,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: he would have been to thirty. And I'm like, man,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: this is gonna work out so perfect. I can't believe
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: we nailed it, Like this is great. He's gonna come
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: into thirty and and I was gonna take a thirty
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: yard shot in in this scenario. Um. And then he
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: just never crossed totally fine, And there is enough buff
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: there that yeah. Yea never never presented itself though, because
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: instead of crossing, he instead turned up that point and
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: worked up the point, probably up to oaks or something
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: up in there, and we never saw him again. I
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: tried some grunting, and he looked but wasn't half that,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: but he was. He was a nice, you know, mature buck.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I mean I was stoked. Yeah, I mean, I couldn't
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: ask for anything better than that. But what I was
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: surprised by really I got some yeah, some cameras out there,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: and he was walking around today. So I'm like, when
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I get back to that's awesome. Man, he's asking for it. Um,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: that was an encouraging first time. I was like, man,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I mean I saw a shooter buck first night. This
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: is great. And so we went back intore that next morning. Uh,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: I didn't end up seeing anything. I don't think right
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: justin I don't think we saw any deer that is
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: right anything. So it should we point out that I forgot.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: We need to explain a little bit about what you
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: alluded to Taylor, which was the neighbor. So we that
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: that that night. I just described when we hiked in
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and we're setting up our trees, you putting up our
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: sticks and saddles and stuff. As I was getting up
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: in the tree, I could see our vehicle parked off
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: the side of the road and a truck pulled up
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: behind it and then drove away. And then came back
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: later and parked there for a while, and I'm thinking, oh, man,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: someone's messing with their stuff or someone's freaking out there
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and to call the cops or call their neighbors or
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: who knows what. And I don't know, half hour later,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: something like uh, justin it was you right? You got
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: a text message? Yeah? I did? And and what the
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: text message just said? Like, hey, what are you doing here?
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Your trucks on my neighbor's property or something. Yeah, He's
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: like are you huh are you hunting? Right? Like I
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: can't remember exactly what it said, but it was like, okay,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: big brother definitely knows. Yeah, it was freaking or something,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: and the neighbors does not like it. We were very
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: perplexed by how this person had gotten Justice's phone number. UM,
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: and we're thinking, like, man, is this guy like in
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: the c I A and he pinged our cell phones
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: or something, and like being being in this area, your
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: mind jumps to all sorts of crazy conclusions when you're
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: around um and here are some of the stories you
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: told this Taylor about the crazy things that going out there.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: I was thinking, man, we've got like I don't know, Um,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know what I thought, but it
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: ended up being that there was a luggage tag that
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: could be seen through a window, and that's how my family.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I was assuming my family was being swept away in
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: a white fan uh at the very moment that I
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: was getting that text. But it turned out that I
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: just happened to have a luggage tag pressed against the
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: window that had my phone number on it. So that
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: was quite the relief, a much more simple explanation. It
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: was weird because I said that you guys sent me
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: a screenshot of the text, and I looked up the
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: number on my phone and I realized it was a neighbor.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I quickly sent a text and said, hey, you know
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: my buddies are down there hunting um. When I said hey, like,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: how did you get his number? He said? His response
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: was like dot dot dot passed life. And I was like, yeah, okay,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I'm not gonna fraud there. But then we found out
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: that there was a luggage tag, and I'm like, oh, dude,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: come on, don't make yourself seem cool like like or
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: maybe maybe he didn't look at the luggage tag. Maybe
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: he really did do some sneaky hivert stuff, you know,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, we'll never know. He's probably listening
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: to this phone call right now. Maybe just laughing, he
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: could be. Oh Man. Definitely kept us on the toes
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: that day. But but yeah, next day didn't see anything.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: So mid day decided, Okay, we had a paperwork done
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: at the spot I've gotten permission on, so we're gonna
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: head there. Um, I'll kind of fast forward significantly now
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: because we don't have a whole lot of time left. Um,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: But we went to that place. Um, had like just
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: the same kind of deal. There was like landscapers everywhere,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: and there was neighbors pulling in and out, and this
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: proper is very narrow like it was right along two roads.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: It was just a long, skinny piece the head road
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: frontage on half of it. And um, it just wasn't
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: a lot to work with. So do you have a
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: on the backside. Yeah, the neighbors had deer fencing, so
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: like like kind of nylon netting, like kind of plastic
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: netting that was maybe like six seven ft high or
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: something to try to keep deer from going in and
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: feeding in their yard. Um. Interestingly, that first night, the
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: only deer we saw were in their yard inside the
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: deer fence that's there. That's how that works. But um,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: but yeah, it was cool to go and hunt the
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: place that. You know, I had actually knocked on the
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: doors and got permission on myself, and I just didn't
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: see the activity. I thought we're gonna see. Um it
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: was it was across the road from some really good
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: looking stuff. So I thought for sure there was gonna
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: be deer piling off of the neighboring property, crossing the
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: road and feeding on all the acorns that were in
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: the stuff that we could hunt. But it didn't happen
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: that night. That was basically what I was doing, was
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: was hunting, um basically thinking about the whole flow of
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: movement situation. What we had there was that there was
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: as long, skinny property as I described, and there was
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: a bunch of oak trees in it, and so there
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: was tons of acorns. And then the neighbor as we
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: just mentioned, had this deer fencing. So the whole length
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: of the property had deer fencing along the edge, and
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: any deer that wanted to get from the good thick
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: cover across the road to other good thick cover on
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: the other side of that person that other neighbors home
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: had to go around the outside of that deer fencing
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: in between that deer fencing and a cul de sac. Um.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Never thought i'd say those words, but um, I found.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I found this funnel. But I thought would be a
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: funnel between the end of this yard with a deer
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: fencing and the calder sack where there's a little gap
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: crossing a driveway and then leads into another draw with
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: a bunch of good cover. So we set up on
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: that side of the property to catch any movement funnel
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: that direction, while also hopefully taking advantage of deer feeding
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: on those acorns. Didn't happen the first night, went back
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: into that next morning. I saw a bunch of does
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: coming like they were going to do that, but I
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: think our winds swirled and blew out that group. I
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: don't know, there was like fifteen deer or something in
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: that group does. Yeah, a bunch of deer coming through there. Um,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: but they buggered And then we had a six point buck,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: had a year and a half old buck come across,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: carossed out of the cover across the road, came into
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: our spot and did exactly what I was hoping. The
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: deer would do. And he came walking right to the
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: base of my tree, and I was thinking in the moment,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: like first I was like, alright, I'm gonna shoot him
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: because I thought maybe he was like a two year
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: old six or eight or something. So I drew back.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: And then as soon as he got close and I
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: had my bow, and I think I'm trying to remember
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: what the order here was. I think that as I
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: was drawing back, I was thinking, I had like, oh, man,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: he's a year and a half old. I can't shoot
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: this buck. But I got to full draw and he's
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: right there like five yards, and I had like a
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: back and forth like should I take this deer? Should
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: I not take this deer? Like I haven't shot a
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: year and a half old buck in like fifteen years. Um,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: you know, just a personal goal thing. But I've been
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: trying to kill mature bucks and it's been a long
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: time since I was in a situation where I thought
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: about doing something different. But then I had like a
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: I thought like, man, maybe I should take this deer.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Like we're trying to help control dear populations, we're trying
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: to show how to do this kind of thing, so
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I should shoot it. But then I was like, ah,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: but I don't really want to shoot this deer, and
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: and all this went through my mind in like five seconds,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: and and ultimately I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: Um So I let down and he just walked past
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: and went on and and Rent was I don't know,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: maybe I should have shot him. Um maybe not. I
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: don't know. What I told myself. What I've told myself
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: many times in different scenarios but other way other times,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: is that if you ever are on the fence about
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: shooting a deer, it's like, if you don't want to
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: do it, regardless of what the reasons are, like, don't
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: do it. So for me, it's been either going to
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: do it or not at all. Um So I'm okay
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: with that. But absolutely, unless the deer makes you go
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: like I'm gonna shoot him, if you have to talk
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: yourself into it or convince yourself you should not shoot
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: that deer. Yeah, it's kind of my rule of thumb,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: even though you are correct that you know we're doing
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: a management and and if you wanted to shoot it,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: there's no problem shooting a year and a half old
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: deer in the in the suburbs because that's one lest
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: year to breed um and potentially get hit by a car.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: But at the same time, you know, if you're not
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: excited about it, then don't do it, because at the
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: end of the day, that's really what it's all about. Yeah,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: you know, is a tough one, but um, but I
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: felt like, you know, after it happened, I felt I
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: felt fine with what I did. It was the right
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: call and we got The only thing was that we
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: got you know, after that hunt, we were basically out
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: of time. That was our last day. We had one
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: more hunt that evening, so we really only had two
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: and a half days to hunt. Um, now that I
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: think about this, because we had spent you know, so
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: much time on the front end, you know, kind of
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: getting the education with you and then going through and
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: getting permission and all that just took a lot of time.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: So UM ended up just having that last night hunt
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: and so I just said, okay, last chance, let's go
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: back to the very first place we went, which is
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: that property that we met the landowners on and they
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: had the doughs feeding in the yard and you were
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: hunting that first night with us and had the close
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: call and I thought, man, that sure seems like a
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: slam dunk. And I texted with you and talked with you,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: and you thought the same things with that. Okay, it's
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: our last chance. Try to shoot a doll. That's our
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: best chance. So snuck back in there and I decided
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: to hunt a slightly different spot. Not dramatically, I think
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I just shifted like forty yards over um, but shifted
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: down closer to the other edge of the yard where
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: we could shoot down to where those last doughs came
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: through that you couldn't get a shot at because they're
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: a little bit too far away. UM. So we got
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: set up chasing me. Were in one tree justin, wasn't another?
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: And m how did everything go here? Justin? I think
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: the first year we saw were on the neighbors across
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: the ravine, up on the hilltop, feeding in the yard.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: And then those deer dropped down the valley and came
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: across and actually fed into the yard that we were hunting.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: But they crossed the yard, two of them. One of
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: them disappeared, but two of them crossed the yard and
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: went to the other neighbors and fed out of range.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: And they kind of continued at like I don't know,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: seventy eight yards ninety yards heading off the other direction.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: There was one mature dough and like a year ling
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: or something with her. And when she got out of
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: our yard into the other yard, like she was definitely
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: not going to come my way. UM, I started doing
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: like a faun and distress call, just you know, just
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: kind of using my mouth to make the sound that
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: I think that I've heard in the past that a
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: faun might make that. And um, sure enough, she turned
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: and stared and turned and stared, and then I don't
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: remember exactly how long it was, but she eventually turned
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: and started coming back our way. Um. And over the
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: course of I don't know how long this was, maybe
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: ten minutes, maybe longer than that, that whole encounter fifteen minutes,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: she she slowly worked her way back towards us. And
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: then when she started she got back into our yard
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: and then came out into the open was like crossing
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: the open yard to the other side towards me. That's
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: when I was like, okay, wow, this is this is
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: actually gonna happen. Um, what were you thinking of that moment?
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Justin when she learned and started coming back, Well, I
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: was like, I couldn't believe that she was actually doing it.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: But I think she seemed like she was on edge
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: a little bit. And I remember her taking her time.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: Uh she had that young woman behind her, and but
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: she you know, she didn't just like feed across he could.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: It was like she was looking for whatever was making
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: that that distress call. And um, so I think she
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: was on edge. But I'm like trying to calculate from
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: my tree, like was she you know, managed she like
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: in his shooting range, because you know, I know we
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: were trying to stay pretty close. And but then when
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I saw you draw back, I was like, man, like,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: here we go, Like this is going to happen. And
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: she continued to work across and uh yeah, so I
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: was I couldn't believe it worked. That's what I kept thinking.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I was kind of thinking the same thing. She came
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: across the yard, and what happened was that she it
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: looked like she was going to come right into twenty
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: yards and so I remember she was gonna go behind
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: one set of branches, and I thought to myself, all right,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: this is my chance to draw she as soon as
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: she goes behind these branches at this angle, if she
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: continues on, she'll step out right around twenty yards and
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: I'll have my shop. So as she's walking through the branches,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: I draw back. But instead of instead of stepping out
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: and continuing the way she originally was going to go,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: I thought in my mind, she stopped behind the branches,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: and it seemed like forever. I don't remember how long
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: it was, but I was at full draw a long time.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: And then she started moving again, but her angle was
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: angling off further away, and so she went behind a tree.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: I'm stuck a full draw. And the whole time, I
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: don't know, I think you went back and looked. Wasn't
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: like a minute a half or two minutes or something
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: that I was a full draw. Um the whole time,
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: I'm like, I need to draw down. I need to
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: draw down, like this is not I'm not like I'm
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: just barely holding on, you know, um. But I just couldn't.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: I just did not see a way I could get
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: drawn down without this dough booger and out of there,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: because she definitely was, you know, on edge. She knew
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: something was going on, and so I just kept at
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: full draw. I remember, I believe that, I remember, you know,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: I wasn't anchored anymore. I was just kind of like
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: holding the bow back and just trying to relax in
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: some kind of way, and just like, all right, just wait,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: just wait, just wait, like I don't like, there's no
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: shot right now. It's just a matter of hole in
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: the back. And then as soon as soon as she
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: starts moving again, you can get back, get anchored, and
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: you'll be good. And sure enough she did start to move.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: She moved behind this tree. I got back into shooting
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: position and anchored. And I had ranged earlier that day
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: this little opening on the other side of this tree,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: and so I knew that she was going to step
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: out somewhere between twenty and twenty five yards, and so
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: I thought, if she comes out in this opening, it's
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: it's it's probably a shot I can take. And sure
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: enough she stepped out there. I remember, we're thinking, all right,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I bet she's like yards something like that, and and
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: I put it behind her shoulder and uh and let it.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Let it rip um. And for the sake of time,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: I'll describe this scenario quickly. The shot felt decent, other
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: than the fact that I just had been holding a long, long,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: long time, But I felt like I was in the
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: right spot, and I didn't feel like I flinched or
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: did anything crazy. Um. But when I saw her run off,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: she ran off like yards and then I saw her
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: disappear behind a big clump of trees down in the
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: bottom of a ditch. And I never saw her come
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: on the other side. Somethinking, man, I bet she she
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: went down right there, like she's gotta be down right there.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: And we waited until dark. Went down there, looked at
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: the arrow, and the arrow didn't look as good as
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: it should have. Did not look like a double long.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: There wasn't a lot of blood. There was a little
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: bit of like meaty stuff on it. Taylor, you swung by,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: stopped by, took a look at it, kind of walked
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: me through the different things you think about when recovering
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: a deer in this kind of scenario. Picture brand a
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: few things, and I think you felt the same way.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: The arrow didn't look great, Um, So we decided to
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: wait a couple of hours, right, I think we wait
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: a couple of hours, um, and then we're gonna take
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: up the trail. I gotta ask you, Taylor, you were
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: so kind as to drive over to check out the
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: arrow and chat with me with your wife in the
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: car on your way to date night, and uh didn't
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: seem like she was super thrilled that we were doing that.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Did how much trouble? How much trouble did you get
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: in for that delay? We had lots of expensive bottles
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: of wine at dinner, so it's all okay. Yeah, she
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: was fine after the first bottle, but the second bottles,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: of the third bottle, we're just more of an insurance policy,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: smart man. I was glad. I was glad that I
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: texted you and I did not have to come out
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: and help track, because I don't know how helpful I
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: would have been after uh that much wine. But yeah,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: she was. She was less than less than pleased to
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: find out that we were actually not going to dinner.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: We were going to go over to a property real quick.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: And uh, look at look at what you know? That's
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: what kind of having some buddies around for he's really
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: helpful in the burbs and have an extra set of eyes.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: It's really very invaluable. Yeah, well, I certainly appreciate it
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: was just great to be able to um go through
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: you know, Taylor Chamberlain's rules of of recovery in these settings,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and you know the important things where don't draw attention
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: to yourself. Um, you know, hopefully this you know, hopefully
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I did everything right in the front ends that we
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: don't have a long track job. But you know, don't
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: draw attention because in the middle of night, people seeing
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: lights and stuff. If you draw concern. Um, you know,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: if you do cover the deer, get it out of
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: there quickly. Don't leave gut piles and you know places
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: where they would be terribly um conspicuous. Uh YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: So we cover all that kind of stuff, and then
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: eventually I went back to track track that deer down
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: into that ditch up the other side and unfortunately to
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: a property line where we didn't have permission yet, and
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: it actually went it was going right to like the
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: edge of two properties. So I was like at a
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: t junction with the property we had permission on, and
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: then there's two other properties and the blood trailer went
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: right to the corner of those two spots. So me
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: and uh my producer went to go knock on those
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: doors to get permission to go track. And this is
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: where the story gets particularly uh interesting, I guess, because
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: one door. One person answered the door and was like, oh, well, okay, sure,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: whatever you gotta do, no big deal. Um. Now I
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: gotta remember this is by this time, it's after dark.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: We're in the suburbs outside of Washington, d C. As
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: you described, Taylor, people that live out here don't want
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: to be bothered. They're not you know, they don't want
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: people around. Now it's dark and someone's at their door
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: with a flashlight. Um. So this guy handled it well,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: but the other person did not handle it well. The
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: other person, you know, got to the door and you
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: had their spotlight on me. Um. And I'm trying to
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: make myself as unthreatening as possible. Like my hands are visible, Um,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I have a flashlight, but I'm not pointing at their eyes.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: I'm like pointing in my direction more so so they
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: can see me clearly. Um. And you know I stand
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: away from the door, so like I'm not right up
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: in their grill. Um yeah, because I know this could
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: be like an uncomfortable situation for a homeowner or so
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of anything I can do to
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: seem less threatening. But this person won't even open the door.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: He just presses his face against the glass. And he's like,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: what are you doing? What are you doing? Why are
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: you here? Um? And I said, I'm so sorry. You know,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: here's the situation. And I explained that, you know, I
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I'm hunting on your neighbors, I have permission to be
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: hunting there, got a shot of the deer, blah blah blah,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: just just kind of try to quickly explain what's going on.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: Explained that I was hoping to get permission to to
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: continue tracking the deer and also just let you know,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: like why you're seeing lights back there, and immediately the guys,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I'm calling the cops. I'm calling the cops. I'm like,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: you don't need to call the cops, sir. I've just
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: you know, this is what I just wanted to explain
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: what was going on, and if you don't want me
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: on your property, we we won't do that. I just
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: wanted to, you know, respect your wishes and explain the situation.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: He just kept saying, I'm calling the cops. I don't care.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: I'm calling the cops. You can't come on my property.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: You can't come to property. I'm like, okay, hey, alright,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not gonna come on your property. No
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: need to call the cops. Um, you we'll we'll get
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: out of your hair. So we leave and go back
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: to the property we're hunting, go back to the truck,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: kind of unload any last year. And we said, okay,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: well let's go track to the property that we do
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: have permission on, and sure enough, that ended up being
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: where the doe went. So we followed the blood that property,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: and unfortunately the blood trail at this point had really diminished.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: It had been decent and it had never been a ton,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: but we were able to follow it across where we
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: did a permission onto the new property, and then we
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: got to drop here, a little drop there, nothing. We're
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: doing circles. We're doing circles. We're doing circles. Um. And
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: at this point, based on the arrow and just the drop, drop, drop,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: it was like, okay, this this deer either we're gonna
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: find it dead right away or this is like a
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: flesh wound based on the meat on the air and everything.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: But I'm still, you know, having hope. And then all
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: of a sudden, I see these lights pull up, cars
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: pulling up, lights pulling up on the neighbors, and I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: just knew right away I'm like, they called the cops,
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: and sure enough, here come, here come big flashlights coming
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: our way, and a couple of cops came over, and uh,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: you know, I want to know what the heck was
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: going on. So um, my producer was there with us.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: This is our our, our our buddy Andreas was out
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: there with us too, and he's like, let me, let
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: me take care of us. And he's got like of
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: our paperwork. He has our our filming permits and our
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: permission slips and all the stuff that shows that we're
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: doing what we're doing legally and everything. So he went
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: over there and the cops talk to him and had
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: us explain what we were doing and what was going on,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: and explaining what we told the neighbors and why we
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: stopped at their house and so on and so forth.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: And it was like a very stressful situation in the moment,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: and we're all like trying to you know, keep our
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: hands up and like not up. But I mean, like
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: I just remember thinking about it. Don't do anything weird,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: don't you know, Just let's just stand still. Let's just
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: do nothing threatening. Let's not give anyone an excuse to
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: get over excited, because We're in the middle of the night.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: There's flashlights pointing all over the place, and there's cops,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: and everyone's stressed out, and I'm upset, and we're not
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: finding the deer. And eventually they let us go and
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: continue our stuff. But to make a long story short,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: we were not able to continue tracking that deer much further.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: We found one little other drop of blood after that,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: and it was it was dried up, and seemed at
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: that point that that this was like a brisket shot,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: a super low shot. If I were to guess what
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: I think happened is that I must have dropped my
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: my arm, my bow arm, so on that shot. I
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: was at full drop for so long that when I released,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: I must have came down a little bit low, you know,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: just that arm being tired, and I probably just hit
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: super low, you know, on the belly or a little
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: forward and low, something like that. And that deer gonna flesh,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: wound bled some, but dried up, and UH, and she
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: carried on her way and we dealt with the cops.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: I couldn't find the deer, went back to the car,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: was super depressed and bummed out about it, and UH
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: and had to end end our trip on that low note,
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: which is a bummer after you know, a lot of
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: fun and excitement. It was a bummer way to end it,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: but I guess it was a a really full circle
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: look at what suburban and urban hunting can be. Like.
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: We had we saw a big buck, We had a
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: shot at a young buck. We had a bunch of
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: cool encounters with doe as we saw lots of deer
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: in yards. We saw a big buck in a yard.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: We talked to landowners who liked us, we talked to
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: landowners who hated us. We got permission in some places,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: we got a lot of nose from others, and we
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: end up getting the cops called. I mean, it was
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: it was everything you could ever dream of right here.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: We get it all. You got the full, the full
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: gauntlet thrown at you. It's amazing how unnerving having the
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: cops called on you can be when you know that
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: you're doing everything one by the book. But still, I
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: mean I probably have the cops called on me probably
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: fifty times, you know times, um yeah, because I don't
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: feel so bad, yeah, but but it's never once have
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: I been doing anything illegal or wrong? Right I'm like,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: you know, when the cops come, and it's kind of
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: unnerving because a lot of the times with offs have
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: never dealt with a hunter before either, and they're like,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: you know, winds deer season like now like obviously like
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: you know, okay, people answer that differently, you know, I mean,
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: they just don't, uh, they don't deal with it a
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: lot either, and so it's kind of like an unknown
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: for them, which makes it a little hairy. And I
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: don't know, it's very unsettling to have to deal with
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: the police and um. But you know, like unfortunately you're
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: hunting a quarter acre or half acre or three acre
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: a lot whatever. Um. Still, even on that three acre
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: a lot, there's only like a very small buffer on
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: the fringe, that is where where the bubble overlaps with
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: where you can actually hunt them. And like the deer
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: end up off property a lot even if you take
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: a perfect shot. And unfortunately sometimes you have to knock
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: on doors and get permission and deal with piste off
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: people and police and weird recoveries and you know, it's
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: just it's the nature of urban hunting. But at the
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: end of the day, you know, would you say the
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: juice is worth a squeeze? Like was it was it
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: that interesting of a hunt? Or would you prefer rural,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: standard market hunting spots. So I will be as I'll
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: be honest with the Taylor. I I one see the appeal,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: and I had fun, and I'm really glad I did it,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: and I learned a ton and it was really cool.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: But I will also say that I did find certain
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: elements of it stressful and um like, like like many
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: of them, like many of them, And so I think
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: I prefer the Mark Kenyan way, is what I'll say.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: I prefer my rural countries loots where there's less stress.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: But I definitely see why this is so much fun
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: for you and why it's a really cool thing that
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: people can get out and do, especially if you live
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: somewhere like this and it's not easy to get out
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: in the country. Um, I mean it's it's sure a
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: heck of a lot better than sit on the couch. Um.
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: And anyone who does this like you do and does
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: it consistently and gets it done and has figured out
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: how to navigate the red tape, I mean that is
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: no easy task. So so kudos to anyone who's doing it.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: And and I want to second or I want to
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: kind of qualify that what by when I say it's
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: no easy task, Like yet, it's not easy, but it's
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: definitely possible. Like I mean I was able to pull
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: it off in a couple of days, Like I was
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: able to get permission, I was able to find places
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: to shoot deer. I had opportunities of deer. So it's
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: it's also something to be said that, like this thing
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: is out there for you, it's accessible, it's available. If
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: you've not been able to get out and hunt as
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: much as you want because you have to drive a
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: long ways, consider this because this kind of thing is
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: available in a lot of cities and a lot of
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: suburbs and a lot of neighborhoods, and it can be
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: a really cool thing. So so I saw the good
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: and the bad, that the fun and the stressful and
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: um and I think that you know, expecting a little
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: both is probably a good thing to having. Mind. Yeah,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: I would think that if anybody lived in a rural
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: area and they chose to drive into a suburban area
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: to hunt, there's something wrong with that, right because in
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: this stress and just bs that you have to deal with.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: But if you live in a metropolitan area, you should
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: not be driving. I mean, you can drive, I remember,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: the heck you want to hunt, but there are ample
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: hunting opportunities hidden right under your nose that you probably
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: are overlooking. And so if you're a guy who really
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: wants to get out more, I mean, that's how I
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: ended up hunting in the suburbs. I you know, my
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: family lives in northern Virginia. UM, I came back there
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: after college. I was really bummed out because I was
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: not able to hunt. And then I slowly kind of
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: realized that this hunting gold mine that I was sitting
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: on top of in terms of quantity and the length
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: of the season, Like, yes, it is very stressful. There's
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that is tough to deal with,
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: you know. Right now is we're recording this, I'm in Ohio,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: and I'm like really, really really enjoying being able to
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: drive out to a farm and go out to a
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: property and just hunt wherever I want. Um. But you know,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: that's amazing, And I would take that ten days out
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: of ten if I could. But you know, if you
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: want to go hunt before work and then drive into
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: the office like I do all the time, like that,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: that's where urban hunting comes in, so there are these
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: amazing opportunities in front of you, and and all it
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: takes is a little bit of hard work to kind
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: of get up to the top of the hill there,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: and then it's pretty soon sailing from there. Yeah, I
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: was gonna say, like it, you know, there, it does
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: kind of you know, there's part of it that does
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: feel like we've kind of showed a bit of a
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: negative light on it. But I think to like some
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: of the stress that we um we're having was coming
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: you know, We're we're diving into a community, right, we're
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: coming out of like where what we're used to here,
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: and just like going into d C and trying to
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: knock on doors and were immediately caught off guard by
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: just like gates and cameras and this and that. But like, yeah,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: like you're saying, uh, if if that's your community, then
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: you know it's definitely right there for you, and it
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: probably you probably won't have this the amount of stress
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: that we did because the shock value isn't there for
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: you like it was for us. So I mean, I
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: wouldn't want to discourage anyone from trying this either. Definitely,
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: definitely it was a hell of an experience. I'm really
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: glad I did it, and I do still have like
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: a craw in my I don't know what to saying is,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: but I've got something that makes me want to go
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: back at some point and get the job done. Um,
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: So I'm not writing off the possibility of me showing
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: up at your door again, Taylor and saying, damn it,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna get it here. The door is always well.
