Latest / Spiders Sound Off / Episode 27: The Men Showed Up — the Mascots Sure Didn’t
Transcript
- 0:04Hey everybody. Welcome back to Spider.
- 0:07Sound off. This is Tom.
- 0:09And this is Porter. We are back in Henrico Studios
- 0:12on a sad Sunday afternoon as we just came back from the Robin
- 0:16Center and watching the women's team take a beating from
- 0:21Fairfield. Yeah, it's first time we've ever
- 0:23done the pod on game day where we're we're doing it after a
- 0:26loss. Yeah, it's.
- 0:27A different. Feeling this is a different
- 0:29feeling 'cause we're fans at the end of the day, we love the
- 0:31program, we're trying to help the program, but we also are
- 0:34fans and so just like you guys, I, I definitely don't ever get
- 0:38on the message board after a loss.
- 0:39I let it go for 24 hours, but we're going to pod today and I
- 0:42think we're going to do our best to to, to not be down so.
- 0:46Hey, well, take a a good thing from it.
- 0:48I grew up in Connecticut, so go Fairfield.
- 0:50Yeah, Connecticut. No, no, I mean.
- 0:53All credit to Fairfield. I mean, they play.
- 0:55I like the town of Fairfield. I have friends who live there,
- 0:58so Fairfield. 'S a nice town.
- 0:59They played a heck of a game. They lost on Friday night to
- 1:01Howard and I and I was worried because after that loss, they
- 1:04actually had to get this win in order to keep their post season
- 1:08at large aspirations alive. And they're a very good team.
- 1:12And you know, a very good team comes in with a little extra
- 1:14motivation and A and a spring in their step.
- 1:16And you have to play your very best game to beat them.
- 1:19And I mean, we didn't play our best game today.
- 1:21Fairfield played a heck of a game.
- 1:23Unconscious. Unconscious from three-point
- 1:26land. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:27We couldn't. Coach tried a couple different
- 1:30defenses, none of them. I think we're as successful as
- 1:32he was hoping. He was a very happy guy in the
- 1:34sideline. We just really couldn't guard
- 1:36the three. Well, it wasn't it wasn't that
- 1:39all of their shots were like right in our face with a like
- 1:42they were doing things that we were just a step slow every now
- 1:45and then. And because they were getting
- 1:46open from three, I mean they hit some contested ones too, which
- 1:49is always a Backbreaker, but in the they were hitting a lot of
- 1:52open threes and we missed our equivalent that they made.
- 1:57In the post game presser, coach said, I think he said we were
- 2:01-30 from beyond the arc, meaning they have scored us by 30 points
- 2:05behind the three-point arc. We talked about a number of
- 2:08different things. My my question to him and to to
- 2:12Ali and Rachel, who also did a a post game presser was simply
- 2:17like how do you move quickly to get past a game like this so
- 2:22that you can get prepared. So we have a tough schedule
- 2:24coming up. We got Bethune coming up.
- 2:25We got the tournament in Henrico.
- 2:27We've got a week off. Yeah, we do have some time off,
- 2:30but like you got to, you got to put this game.
- 2:31That's good and bad, having the time off.
- 2:33It is it. Is not a game on Wednesday that
- 2:35they can recover and kind of really forget about this one.
- 2:39Yeah, you. Got to put the game behind you
- 2:40and you got to move forward. This was, you know, every now
- 2:43and again, it's these, these are college kids playing basketball.
- 2:47And, you know, you get a group of college kids that really are,
- 2:50you know, on top of, you know, the the mountain for a second
- 2:53coming in and playing their best game.
- 2:55And you know, this happens. It's not, it's not a fatal
- 2:58result by any means. It's, you know, tough loss for
- 3:01us, but we've had tough losses in the past and responded
- 3:04really, really well. Coach, to his credit, said
- 3:06there's a lot still to to look at and review and work on.
- 3:09He's like, we got to go back and look at the tape.
- 3:11We got to play better. We got to coach better.
- 3:12We got to figure some things out.
- 3:14So I'm not ready to put this one behind me yet.
- 3:16But he said, you know, I know what you're trying to say, which
- 3:18is like, we got to, we still got a lot of basketball ahead of us
- 3:20and we got to, we got to be ready for.
- 3:22It, well it reminds me too, when we talked to Ally, was it 2
- 3:25weeks ago, she mentioned how it was a game that they won, but
- 3:29mentioned how they're coming out slow and they've got to figure
- 3:33out how to come out stronger and not just cause they've been a
- 3:35great second-half team and not a not a great first half team and
- 3:39right. So you, you play a team that's
- 3:41super hot from three, you are slow coming out of the gate.
- 3:46That combination just had us behind by a lot early and we in
- 3:49in the second quarter was no better and the.
- 3:52Third quarter was a. Little better, but.
- 3:55Let me give you these, let me give you these 3 point lines.
- 3:57First quarter Fairfield 6 of 785 percent, 86%, sorry.
- 4:02Second quarter 7 of 11, which is 63% for the quarter.
- 4:07Third quarter five of seven, that's 71%.
- 4:09So through 3/4, they are 18 out of 25 from 3 point land.
- 4:15That's hard to beat on any given night, right?
- 4:17And so they just were super hot and they just, they crushed the
- 4:20shots. And, you know, I mean, we, we
- 4:23weren't playing our best game. We were a step slow early.
- 4:27And by the time we could hit the ship, it was the margin had
- 4:30grown to be, you know, a margin that was going to be hard to
- 4:32overcome. Yeah, and credit to their coach
- 4:33too. I, I remember the beginning of
- 4:35the 4th, like the game is pretty much over when we got to the
- 4:384th, but maybe there's a miracle come back and we're out guarding
- 4:42their threes. And I think 2 plays in a row
- 4:44they had like a cut inside for a layup.
- 4:47And so, you know, they were able to, you know, change it just a
- 4:50little bit to catch us off guard.
- 4:52And like any hopes of a comeback was gone because I think they
- 4:54scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and you're
- 4:56like, OK, well, there's not going to be a a miracle comeback
- 4:59now. Right.
- 5:00Yeah. I mean it was they're very well
- 5:01coached. We talked about that when we did
- 5:03our scout. They're they've been a very
- 5:05successful program. They were they had slipped back
- 5:08to, I think 48 in the net based on the loss to Howard.
- 5:12But you know, you got a top 50 team coming to the Robin Center.
- 5:15You got to play your very best game to win that game.
- 5:17And we just didn't have our best game.
- 5:19There's no excuses. The coach wasn't given any
- 5:21excuses. He wasn't, you know, taking it
- 5:24like harder than than you would expect.
- 5:27You just basically said, we got we got work to do.
- 5:28We got to get ready for the go forward plan, which is to to get
- 5:32ready for the next game and, you know, figure out what we could
- 5:34do better. But like, yeah, he was he made,
- 5:37he gave it. He gave me a good sense of
- 5:38confidence that we were we're going to write the ship.
- 5:40OK, well let's kind of try to forget that ourselves and give a
- 5:44little have a little excitement for the rest of the.
- 5:46Time can I tell you one little funny quip I give coach.
- 5:48So I I got the chance after the presser to pull them aside and
- 5:51just say, hey, you know, one idea for getting past this
- 5:53quickly might be just to say, you know, we're going to we're
- 5:56going to burn the Grays, which is the uniforms that the coaches
- 5:59were wearing. They were brought the Gray
- 6:00sweats out today. I love the Grays.
- 6:02I got to be honest with you. I love the red sweats, the white
- 6:05sweats and the Blues, but I didn't I didn't love the colour
- 6:07and I said it before the game. I'm like, I can't say I love
- 6:09that colour on us, but I don't know if they will or not, But I
- 6:13mean, hopefully, you know, whatever color we choose for the
- 6:16next game, we come out and give them our best shot. 01 other
- 6:19note too. I mean, I and this is kind of
- 6:20like where the where I think one of the reasons Tom and I love
- 6:23doing this podcast is because we have such a special ladies team
- 6:27and they're so good. We want to see them do as well
- 6:29as possible at the end of that game in the stands.
- 6:31I'm walking out after the press conference.
- 6:33So now we're 30 minutes past the end of the game and there's
- 6:35Maggie Dugan talking to little kids in the in the stands as an
- 6:39ambassador of the game, helping to build the game for the next
- 6:43generation. And it just reminds me of like,
- 6:46why I'm so invested in this lady's team.
- 6:48I mean, they, they work hard on the court.
- 6:50They also work harder off the court to build their brand.
- 6:52And they're just good people. So they'll get it fixed.
- 6:55We get what the best major coaching staff in America.
- 6:59We'll, we'll, we'll write this ship.
- 7:00It's just a bad loss just because it was painful.
- 7:02But you know, this is a good team that we played and they
- 7:05they got her number today. In the round, yeah, there's a
- 7:06lot of season to go. Reminds me, I mean, a totally
- 7:10different game. Obviously we lost in the last
- 7:11second shot last year, but we had that loss to Georgetown.
- 7:14They weren't a strong rated team and and we came back from that
- 7:18and had a great season and a. Large historical season.
- 7:22We very still much, very much still in in in in the hunting,
- 7:25in the hunt for an at large bid on the ladies side.
- 7:27I think, you know, we got to we got to play better than we
- 7:30played tonight, no question. But I'm not, I'm not reading too
- 7:33much into it that it's, you know, it's, it's not fatalistic
- 7:36or anything. OK, let's let's jump to the
- 7:37men's game 'cause they had a, a, a nice win, a tough, tough,
- 7:41maybe tighter than expected, but a, a good win on Saturday.
- 7:45Porter, give you credit, when we last did our pod and we were
- 7:49talking about some of these tribute bands that we're
- 7:51playing, he said, hey, maybe we'll have a wonderwalls and
- 7:54walls really came out and he had a great game.
- 7:56Best game of the. Year yeah, I mean he played
- 7:58really, really well. I mean his rebounding efficiency
- 8:01has been off the chart. He's I think he's like I, I
- 8:05looked it up this morning, he is top, I want to say 40 in both
- 8:08defensive and and offensive rebounding efficiency in the
- 8:11country. So he's playing a really, really
- 8:14good he's he's just, he's just cleaning up the boards really
- 8:17well. So I give Mike credit for that.
- 8:18His offensive game showed up at the get 16 points in that game.
- 8:23Really, really solid effort all around from the from everybody
- 8:26in the paint. We dominated that game in the
- 8:28paint. Yeah, it's interesting.
- 8:29Another game we out rebounded the opponent.
- 8:32That's becoming a consistent thing with this team, which is
- 8:34not what we're used to right now.
- 8:37Again, we're not in A10 play yet, so we'll see how that
- 8:39changed so. So to so to clarify that wall
- 8:41stat for a second, walls was 44th in the nation and offensive
- 8:44rebound percentage according to Ken Palm and 30th in the nation
- 8:48defensive rebounding percentage. That's just really solid work on
- 8:51the boards for him. So credit to him for that, he's
- 8:55doing a great job. And No 3 point attempts.
- 8:57So let's it's yeah, that was all inside from walls.
- 8:59So 16 points, No 3 pointers, no 75 foot shots either.
- 9:03I guess he he's not planning to bring that out every game, but a
- 9:07great game from walls. Daughtry had a great game too.
- 9:11So inside was really a big part of.
- 9:13Yeah, I think, I think we scored 50 points in the paint, yeah, in
- 9:17that game. But Daughtry, his plus minus for
- 9:19the game was plus 21. So talk about being effective
- 9:23when you're on the court. Plus 21.
- 9:26I got a chance to do that post game presser as well with Coach
- 9:30Mooney. And first thing I said to him
- 9:32was Coach I, I actually really love your jacket.
- 9:34I love that red jacket with that kind of blue shirt.
- 9:37Nice look. He's definitely going the
- 9:39Versace route. And also he's winning.
- 9:42So you give him credit, right? He's dressing, dressing for
- 9:45success and he's winning, which, you know, what do you want to
- 9:47say? Like the guy is the guy's got it
- 9:49figured out right now. So I actually asked him a
- 9:52question like how encouraged are you that you won this game in a
- 9:55different way? We didn't shoot the three well
- 9:57at all in that game, and our free throws in the first half
- 10:00were atrocious. But we went out and we beat them
- 10:03and we beat them because we dominated them in the paint.
- 10:05So now we've seen us win because we can shoot the three ball.
- 10:08We've seen us. We, you know, we're good from
- 10:10the foul line. We've been really good all year
- 10:11from the foul line. But both of those things were
- 10:13missing in action and we still win the game, which is just
- 10:16really encouraging for me. Yeah, hats off to Ruma Glue, who
- 10:19played a really good first half. I mean, he was, he had really
- 10:22good energy on the floor, defensive energy specifically.
- 10:26I thought his first half was really.
- 10:27Good. He's always good in rebounding.
- 10:28It's like when when he first came in before we, you know, saw
- 10:32him at all. There is the hey, he's going to
- 10:34be this massive 3 point threat and that hasn't turned out to be
- 10:36true, But he's he's he's our best rebounder when it comes to,
- 10:40you know, be in that power forward who you can count on
- 10:43getting 7-8 rebounds a game. He's been great.
- 10:46Mooney brought up a good point too in the post game.
- 10:48He said, you know, rumor glues because he's bigger, he can
- 10:50rebound well, but he also is faster than a lot of our big.
- 10:52So he can cover that mid range guy who has the cutting move to
- 10:55the basket. So he gives you 2 dimensions on
- 10:57defense, which is a which is a nice thing.
- 10:59So rumor glue, we'll give you, we'll give you credit.
- 11:01That was a great game you played.
- 11:04Talk about Aiden Argebride for a second.
- 11:05Yeah, I finally got a chance to ask my question.
- 11:07He was the guy who did the post game press.
- 11:09Yeah, you say you you always are giving him credit for how easily
- 11:13he seems to get fouled. I just like the kid has an an
- 11:18uncanny ability to draw fouls. And I he had 13 attempts from
- 11:21the foul line. In the game, it's, it's two
- 11:23things. One, he's so fast.
- 11:25He's just so fast with the ball. So you, you know, you to stay
- 11:30with him, you have to really, you know, try all the tricks
- 11:32because he's just that fast. But you know, if you make
- 11:35contact, he's got great body animation is what I'll say where
- 11:38it like he lets the ref know that the contact occurred.
- 11:41And I don't know where he got that skill from.
- 11:43He's he said in the post game that something he was just born
- 11:45with, but he's he was born. He's born with the the ability
- 11:50to let people know when contact has.
- 11:52Occurred. I'm picturing him being like a
- 11:54baby in his crib and like a ref in a in a corner blowing the
- 11:58whistle being like foul foul. Mom is rocking the crib and he's
- 12:02like he's over exaggerating the movement.
- 12:04I like it. I like it.
- 12:05I don't know what he's doing, but it is it's it's impressive.
- 12:09And and like the thing about Argebrite, keep in mind he's got
- 12:1233 good point guards or guys who can play the one ahead of him on
- 12:17the roster. He's forced his way into
- 12:19meaningful minutes and meaningful contributions by how
- 12:22good he is. So I mean, he's just a special
- 12:25player. And I mean, if you know, if
- 12:27Argebrite builds his career at Richmond over the next four
- 12:30years, he'll go down in in in Richmond history.
- 12:33I can almost guarantee you that. OK.
- 12:34Can we talk about something bad that happened Saturday?
- 12:37Sure. OK.
- 12:38I'm going to bring back a segment from, I don't know, a
- 12:42month ago. What's wrong with you people?
- 12:45What's wrong with you people? Turn it brown upside down.
- 12:52Don't be a moron. What's wrong with you people?
- 12:59What's wrong? With you people at half time
- 13:02there was an the advertised mascot game.
- 13:06Now I know we've joked about the A10 having their teams have
- 13:10like, you know, the first team and second team have six
- 13:12players. Well, this was a a game, a full
- 13:15court game that was 3 on 2 of mascots.
- 13:20OK, so one, I mean, I'm sure that wasn't the plan.
- 13:24So when it was, you know, or you know, at some point you create
- 13:27your promotions. We had the mascot game before,
- 13:29which I've typically enjoyed because you you get to see like
- 13:32the giant pizza slice throw a pass off the head of, you know,
- 13:38Webster. Well anyway, so three on two
- 13:41mascot game. So first of all, like at some
- 13:44point you got to improvise and maybe it should have been 5
- 13:47mascots on like 5 students like this.
- 13:50There was a way to like come up with something better or three
- 13:53or make it a three-point contest or do something when you only
- 13:57have 5 Second. What's wrong with all the other
- 14:01mascots in this town that didn't participate?
- 14:03And don't tell me there was like the Christmas parade or some
- 14:06other excuse like there was. It was long since over before
- 14:09the game. There was no Nutsy, there was no
- 14:13kickeroo, and kickeroo is usually with like the MVP of
- 14:16this game really, because he's like basically he doesn't have
- 14:20like the giant head where the eyes are like 3 feet below it.
- 14:23Like there's usually like a pizza slice.
- 14:25There was no pizza slice. I think that's like the Papa
- 14:27John's mascot. Like where I mean, I, I have a
- 14:30friend from high school was a mascot at their college.
- 14:32So I know there's like an athletic part to being a mascot
- 14:35and really being good at it when you're at the stadium.
- 14:38But all we needed was 5 people, man.
- 14:41All we needed was 5 people, Any five people in costumes like you
- 14:45could, you could get any sort of mascot technically.
- 14:48You need sex to be 3 on three so.
- 14:49Well, I'm saying just, yeah, that's right.
- 14:51So I'm sorry like that, that no one goes to the good thing is no
- 14:55one goes to the men's or women's expecting like, you know, an NBA
- 14:59halftime show. Every now and then we get really
- 15:01lucky. We saw the girl flipping balls
- 15:04on her head a few years ago from a tricycle, which was like, you
- 15:07know, she's after coming to Richmond.
- 15:09She she became like a a superstar in that sort of world.
- 15:13The ball flipping in the ball flipping Tricycle round.
- 15:16Well, she was on the Americas Got Talent at some point, I
- 15:18think. But anyway, like what's wrong
- 15:21with you people? We we do not need three on two
- 15:24mascot games at halftime. Two ideas for you #1 next year
- 15:27we got, I mean, D Hall came to the game with me.
- 15:29So because you you were missing an action with the band practice
- 15:32but but D Hall could be the spider sound off mascot.
- 15:36We just have to find a good costume for him.
- 15:37Yeah, if we we'd love ideas of what the spider sound off mascot
- 15:41should look like. Let me tell you something.
- 15:42Folks, we can design one. D Hall is money from three.
- 15:45That's all I'll say. He will hit the three ball so.
- 15:49There you go. Well, anyway, so great result on
- 15:52Saturday as long as you didn't watch halftime.
- 15:54Yeah, I mean, look, we beat him by 9:00, but they got a player,
- 15:57a key player back that they had been missing who had a had a big
- 16:00game against us. So they're I think 2:15 when I
- 16:02last checked in Ken Palm, they will move up with that player
- 16:05back. They're a better team than 215
- 16:08in the country. I saw a good ODU team play that
- 16:10game. We always get it seems like
- 16:12these in state rivals best effort, but that was a good ODU
- 16:15team. We moved up to 85 in the net.
- 16:19I guess we were 77. We'll move back a little bit
- 16:21with the ODU one, but we're still 85 of the net, which is
- 16:23kind of where you want to be right now. 8 and one, the crowd
- 16:27itself. Let's talk about the crowd in
- 16:28general. It was a good crowd for 12:30 on
- 16:32Saturday. I think 4600 was announced.
- 16:33Attendance. A lot of people in the stands
- 16:36supporting the Spiders, so that was good.
- 16:38Or they were there for the mascot.
- 16:39Or they were there for the mascot game, right?
- 16:41What what was missing in action was the student section, and
- 16:45this has been a recurring thing. We have a student count for you.
- 16:48I know it's exam week. It's a 12:30 Saturday game.
- 16:51I don't think people are doing 1230 exams on Saturday.
- 16:53You need a break, you know, come out and support your team.
- 16:56There were 40-5 people in the student section this week, 23 of
- 17:01which were the women's field hockey team, which were being
- 17:04honored at the 8 minute mark in the first half for their
- 17:07successful season. So after they got their award,
- 17:10they left. So we were down to 22 students
- 17:12for the rest of the game. Credit those 22 who showed up.
- 17:15We love the fact that you're there supporting the team.
- 17:17We want students to feel as passionate about the team as we
- 17:20do. There's a different energy when
- 17:23the students are in the building.
- 17:24We need you there. So if you guys, if we have any
- 17:26student listeners, you know, you know, try to try to bring your
- 17:29friends out to the game, Let's start to build the ecosystem
- 17:32around both of these teams. Honestly, the men's and the
- 17:34women's, they're both special teams.
- 17:35They deserve our support. I know I need to stop bringing
- 17:38this up, but I can almost guarantee five of those 22
- 17:41students would have raised their hand to put on a costume to play
- 17:44at halftime. I think you're right.
- 17:45I actually think that you're right.
- 17:46We could have even gotten the four students in in one mascot.
- 17:49Or five mascots versus like 5 Santa Clauses.
- 17:51That would have been great, actually.
- 17:53Santa Claus was at the latest game today.
- 17:55Stone candy to the kids, that was.
- 17:56Great. Not just candy, there was like
- 17:57souvenir and stuff. That was a yeah.
- 18:00So again, we students, if you get a chance, come out and
- 18:04support these teams. They deserve it.
- 18:05Can I give you one thing that I've been thinking about too,
- 18:07about Coach Mooney for a SEC? Sure.
- 18:10So Coach Mooney has been a Richmond coach for 21 years, I
- 18:14think. This is his 21st season, yeah.
- 18:17He's 22 seasons total coaching one at Air Force, the rest here.
- 18:22I went back and I looked at his his Ken Palm coaching page and
- 18:27for 21 years in a row he has been and he de emphasizes this.
- 18:35So there's a reason for it. Probably one of the bottom
- 18:38quartile offensive rebounding teams in the nation by design
- 18:42because he, you know, the team would, you know, if they missed
- 18:45a shot would retreat on defense to set up there's their
- 18:47specialized, you know, kind of zone defense or switching
- 18:50defense. So it's an intentional thing
- 18:53that he de emphasized last year. We know we had the bad season,
- 18:56right this year. He's got a different team.
- 18:59He's completely changed his coaching style after 21 years to
- 19:05to go after something different, which I think is a really
- 19:08impressive thing we need to talk about because we're now in the
- 19:11top half in the nation and offensive rebounding.
- 19:14We go for those boards. We have a lot of size, a lot of
- 19:17physicality inside and it's making a difference.
- 19:20It really is. It's harder to prepare for
- 19:21Richmond because Coach Mooney has shifted and changed with the
- 19:25talent that he has. So I give him credit for this.
- 19:28You told me he said something in, I think it was the press
- 19:30conference on Saturday, the post game conference where was
- 19:33talking about Daughtry and he was saying how both Daughtry is
- 19:37still learning to fit into the Richmond system and, and the
- 19:40system or coach is learning how to fit in Daughtry.
- 19:44So it was the admission that like they're still figuring out
- 19:47because he's, he's such an impactful player in like the
- 19:5017/18/19 minutes he's playing. And you could tell the, the and
- 19:54that's great to hear. Like they're still working on
- 19:56it. Like his, you know, you're 8:00
- 19:57and 1:00, but you know, in a sense, like there's a lot more
- 20:01we can get from our inside game as our offense continues to
- 20:04evolve with these new players. Yeah, that came from a couple a
- 20:07couple of games back. But you're right, that's exactly
- 20:10what he said. And so it's like, you know,
- 20:11we're trying to figure out how to harness his skill and his
- 20:13special superpower, but at the same time, we're trying to help
- 20:17to get him to play within the system the way that it will
- 20:19maximize the system, which is why I feel like this team still
- 20:23has another step to take. I mean, the men's team, I think
- 20:25is is really encouraging in terms of what it's doing.
- 20:29And I mean, given the preseason prognosticators who said we were
- 20:33the 11th best team in the Atlantic 10, given the lack of
- 20:37any sort of love of from any of the statistical services, you
- 20:42know, you just see what's happening over there and they're
- 20:43doing a great thing. And it's like, you know, number
- 20:46one in the nation in bench, bench, bench minutes played.
- 20:49I mean, coach said early on, I'm going to play a lot of guys and
- 20:52play them a lot. And he's held true to that now
- 20:54through nine games. And so, like, I mean, it's very
- 20:58difficult to scout for Richmond, but you know, two games ago,
- 21:02David Thomas and Will Johnson and Arguerbrecht go off.
- 21:04This last game, Jayden Daltrey, Mike Walls and Arguerbrecht go
- 21:07off. I mean, we are very difficult to
- 21:10prepare for because you don't know who's going to be ready to
- 21:12go at any given point in time. OK.
- 21:14Well, I thought I'd bring in a new segment and maybe we'll do
- 21:19this once and I'm going to put Porter on the spot here.
- 21:20Can I give you? Before you do that.
- 21:22What? You're always like stopping me?
- 21:23I know. But transition?
- 21:24I don't want to transition yet because I got some advanced
- 21:26stats I want to go through. Well then, why?
- 21:28Are you not talking? I'm sorry, I'm trying to talk.
- 21:31I'm, I'm still, I'm still ruffled from my feathers are
- 21:34ruffled after the loss to Fairfield.
- 21:36OK, what's this advanced stat you want to give us?
- 21:38Is it about height? Again, so you know, we're we're
- 21:40going to, we're not going to do the the advanced stats on
- 21:43height. We're going to go to Evan Mayer
- 21:45for a second. Who is that?
- 21:47Evan Mayer is one of the one of the statistical people who
- 21:51really track college basketball and they're he's pretty well
- 21:53known. It's it's they do it.
- 21:55He does a lot of really cool work and I wanted to share with
- 21:58you a couple things. Number 1, he does a top lineup
- 22:01in terms of efficiency and I think some of the names on this
- 22:04lineup might surprise you and he does a 2A3A4 and A5 man lineup
- 22:08for the men's team. And then you know, I'll give you
- 22:10the plus minus. Who do you, I know you're
- 22:12looking at my screen right now, but the top three plus minus
- 22:16players on the Spiders this year, meaning plus minus for you
- 22:18guys who don't know is score differential when a guy's in the
- 22:22game. So if you come in at 00 and you
- 22:24leave the game and it's 10, nothing, your plus 10.
- 22:26So that's how plus minus work. So who are our top three plus
- 22:29minus guys on the season? It is Roma Glue, Beagle and
- 22:37Argebrite. It is Jaden Daughtry.
- 22:40He's plus 100 on the season. That's insane by the way,
- 22:43because he hasn't played that many minutes plus 100.
- 22:46Harger Bright's number two, you got that 1 + 99 and David Thomas
- 22:50is #3 at plus 78. So that's the season long plus
- 22:53minus leaders. Our our best two man combination
- 22:57lineup so far this year has been this is again using offensive
- 23:01and defensive efficiency according to Evan Maya.
- 23:04So efficiency feeds the net. These are our top line UPS.
- 23:08Two men has been Beagle and Daughtry.
- 23:10When they're together, that's been the top.
- 23:12Two men. So this is like when they're on
- 23:13the. When they're on the court
- 23:14together. Got it.
- 23:16The top three man lineup Arga bright Beagle Daughtry top four
- 23:20man line about lineup Arga bright Beagle, Ruma glue and
- 23:23Thomas interesting and the top five man lineup Arga bright
- 23:28Beagle, Daughtry, Ruma glue and Thomas So interesting just
- 23:32numbers and and advanced stats from Evan Maya on, you know,
- 23:35efficiency plus minus by the way, I'll I'll.
- 23:39That is five players off the bench.
- 23:45Yeah, you're right, You're right.
- 23:46And that's, I mean, we've seen the bench out scoring our
- 23:48starters and and that doesn't it's a little bit the starting
- 23:51lineup doesn't mean that much. I hadn't thought about.
- 23:53That, but yeah, that's. Pretty impressive.
- 23:55That's our five guys off the bench.
- 23:57And Mooney made a comment at the end of the presser, he said.
- 23:59Like we're we're trying to tell the guys that this this heavy
- 24:02shift strategy works best the last five minutes of the game
- 24:06when we have fresh legs and everybody else has been been
- 24:09running hard. So that's an interesting thing.
- 24:11Last note for you before you get into whatever your segment
- 24:14you're about to launch on me, which I have no idea what you're
- 24:16going to say next. So the Daughtry and Argebrite
- 24:20plus 100 + 99 are also top ten in the A10 and plus minus.
- 24:24So that's another little advanced step for you.
- 24:26So kind of a fun fun with data there for you.
- 24:28Yeah, I'm always curious with plus minus because I, I, you
- 24:32know, if you're, I mean, we looked at the women's plus minus
- 24:34obviously like we lost by a bunch today.
- 24:36So guess what, all of our starters had really large minus
- 24:39numbers next to them. Now that's gets offset obviously
- 24:42with all their plus numbers from prior games.
- 24:44But it is a when you've got players playing 20 minutes and
- 24:49you're winning, are you more likely going to have kind of a
- 24:52lot of pluses across the board and spread out versus when
- 24:56you've got, you know, four guys that are playing 30?
- 24:59I know it's the same amount of time in total for the team but
- 25:02I'm just curious of like how does that when you've got
- 25:05fresher legs does it give you? A little.
- 25:06It's certainly situational. Like if you play a guy you know
- 25:10who comes in at the end of the game when you're up 20 points
- 25:12and you know, we expand the margin, he's going to have a
- 25:15nice plus minus. But over time, if you take it in
- 25:18the aggregate, it shows effectiveness over time.
- 25:20So that's why I wanted to share you the on the season versus an
- 25:23individual game. Yeah, Daughtry went plus 21 in
- 25:25this last game, but he's plus 100 for the season, so the team
- 25:28is winning when Daughtry is on the floor over and over again.
- 25:32Yeah, The thing that's also interesting to remember is that
- 25:35I was trying to think of like, what are some things we can talk
- 25:37about? Oh, we're not even a third
- 25:38through the season yet. Like I realize like it's not
- 25:41like we still got a couple games to get to where where we could
- 25:44say, hey, we're 1/3 through the season.
- 25:45So it's still really early. I mean, we, we love how the
- 25:48men's team is playing and in general we love how the women's
- 25:50team is playing as well outside of this bad loss today.
- 25:53But it's still super early. And we, I think we hope in
- 25:57whatever 10 games from now, we're still of the same opinion
- 26:00that both teams are playing great.
- 26:02And we've got kind of big aspirations of whether it's at
- 26:06large or, you know, you know, winning the tournament.
- 26:09But there's so much time to go. It's it's, it's promising, but I
- 26:12don't think either of us are, you know, betting all of our
- 26:15savings on what either team is doing because it's just early.
- 26:19It is early. I mean, both teams, again, seven
- 26:21and three for the women, 8 and one for the men are playing
- 26:24well. And that's that's really
- 26:26encouraging as a Spider basketball fan, right?
- 26:28That's why we need to support them.
- 26:29That's why we need to come out. They're playing well.
- 26:31OK, so this is my new segment. I'm putting Porter on the spot.
- 26:35It's a I'm going to give you some a statement and you have to
- 26:38say whether it's an overreaction or it's real with a little
- 26:42commentary as to why. OK, OK.
- 26:45The first one. And these are both men and are
- 26:47we? Going to be able to edit this
- 26:48out if I don't like it. Yeah, sure.
- 26:50OK. The Belmont win prove the men
- 26:52are a legitimate A10 title contender.
- 26:56Overreaction or real? Oh, it's real.
- 26:59I mean, it's real. I mean, you win a game on the
- 27:00road against a really good team that tells you, you can do that.
- 27:03So that tells us we, we could, we could win the A10, yes.
- 27:07Great Maggie is on track to finish as the greatest women's
- 27:11player in program history. Well, I've already said that, so
- 27:13yeah, that's 100% real, OK. I'm starting with the easier
- 27:16ones, Yeah. Alicia Newell will make the A10
- 27:18All Defensive team this season. I still think yes, I mean, it
- 27:21wasn't our best game today, start shutting down their best
- 27:24player. But like I, I think, yeah,
- 27:26she'll make the all defense team.
- 27:27OK, that's a little tougher. So the women lost today at home.
- 27:29First home loss since Texas about a year ago.
- 27:33The women won't lose another home game this season.
- 27:36Overreaction or real? It's an overreaction.
- 27:40We're going to. We've got some good teams.
- 27:42Rhode Island's really good. I don't know if we play my home
- 27:44or not this year. George Mason, St.
- 27:46Joe's, Davidson's really good. So there's four good teams in
- 27:50the A10 that could come in and beat us.
- 27:51So I would say overreaction. OK, both teams, men and women,
- 27:55will finish with net rankings inside the top 60.
- 27:59Overreaction or real? Oh wow, that's a tough one.
- 28:05I assume it's tough on one side. Yeah, I.
- 28:07Think the I think the women will be there.
- 28:09Tougher on one. Side, I think the men, I mean,
- 28:11it's so hard to be in the top 60.
- 28:14I mean, I only only have two A10 teams there right now.
- 28:16I'm going to say, you know what, I'm going to support our men's
- 28:19team because they're playing so well.
- 28:20I'm going to say that's real. OK, nice.
- 28:22OK, this is getting a little personal.
- 28:24You ready here? We go.
- 28:25Porter only calls Belmont a quad one win because he likes saying
- 28:29the word quad overreaction. I don't.
- 28:34Even know what that means, but I'm going to say that's
- 28:36overreaction. OK, two more spider sound off is
- 28:40now getting scouted by opposing teams because the Intel is too
- 28:43good. That's real, that's real.
- 28:45That's true. We'll check our Connecticut
- 28:46listens. Actually coming into this week.
- 28:48That's true. But I guarantee you that's real.
- 28:50OK. And last one, Tom and Porter are
- 28:53now officially a top 50 mid Major basketball podcasts.
- 28:56Overreaction or real? I think that's real actually.
- 28:59Top 50 Mid major. I don't know how we would ever
- 29:01rank. That are there even 50 mid major
- 29:03podcasts? I mean, we know there's like 7
- 29:05in the eight 10s. There probably are.
- 29:06It's. Probably about 50 and.
- 29:07We're probably in the top 50 then, right?
- 29:09That's real, 100%. That's right.
- 29:12So question is, are we top ten? That's the better.
- 29:14Question. Yeah, we need to have our own
- 29:15like net rankings for obscure podcast like ourselves.
- 29:20Well, I mean, you know, at the end of the day, it's, it's,
- 29:25it's, it's fun because we, we actually had a a fan come up and
- 29:28thank us for doing it today during the women's game, which I
- 29:31it was just, you know, look, at the end of the day, we're doing
- 29:33this. We're not making money,
- 29:34Obviously, we're just trying to help the programs.
- 29:36We're also trying to stay as real as possible.
- 29:38So you guys want to listen. So we're, we're fans, we're
- 29:41going to, we're going to say when we, when we don't agree
- 29:44with the coaching decision, we'll say it right.
- 29:46We're, we're going to try to be as real and fun tick as
- 29:48possible. But at the same time, we do at
- 29:49the end of the day, have the best interest of the programs in
- 29:51mind because we want to see him win.
- 29:53Yeah, so both teams kind of have a a a week off till their next
- 29:57game. We'll be back at you soon with
- 29:59some amazing content. We're not sure exactly what it
- 30:02is yet, but we've got we're working on some some good
- 30:05content for a midweek episode. Obviously we've got the games to
- 30:09talk about this weekend or you know, coming up, but also
- 30:14hopefully some interesting other topics we can get into.
- 30:17See you at our crack research team comes up.
- 30:19With we'll come up with some more good stuff for you guys to
- 30:21keep you, keep you interested in Richmond basketball, talking it
- 30:24all the time. Again, tough, tough result today
- 30:27for the ladies. Great result for the men.
- 30:29This weekend. We got to both teams have a week
- 30:31off till next weekend before they play again.
- 30:33So we'll come back at you with some good stuff, hopefully.
- 30:37Yeah. And then, so until next time,
- 30:38this is Tom. And this is Porter.
- 30:40And this is spider sounding. Off see you.
