- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by The Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Tristan, we are so back, my man.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: We can only hide from recording for so long.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: We were hoping to crawl out of our burrow this this week, but unfortunately, uh, we saw the sun that is uh Texas Tech L.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So I guess the shadow, that's the correct metaphor, right?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: We saw our shadow, the L.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I'm a I'm a groundhog.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: You're the groundhog, and we are we are about to go back into our hole for many, many more months rooting for this football team.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So the more appropriate Texas Tech fan analogy would probably be the prairie dog.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And I don't I don't mean that in like bingo, yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: The the the pooping sense.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: I mean that in like why would you mean it in the pooping sense?
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Who thought, okay, he said prairie dogs is like Texas Tech.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Okay, I get it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Nobody thought pooping.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm just making it clear.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, I mean this in like the regional rodents of Lubbock.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't mean it, I don't mean it in any sort of laboratorial way.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: This laboratory will be better is off to a roaring start.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: All right, football.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Let's get it out of the way.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Let's rip it off.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, we haven't talked about the last two games, and really there's a reason for that.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Um uh Texas Tech loses 34 to 24.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: We are now four and five on the year.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um, couple disappointing losses in a row.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I went to Fort Worth.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I went and visited some buddies up there.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It was a great time.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: The Fort Worth and Chimmies is absolutely lit on game day.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Great atmosphere.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Um, our team fell apart after Baron Morton got hurt.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, Tyler Shuck was not very good, and uh it was painful to watch.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Sounds good, kind of like the uh Oklahoma State game, if you ask me, with the whole Baron Morton getting hurt and the offense losing all steam afterwards.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So all I'm hearing is we're really uh six and what six and four.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: That's that's no, that's my record.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Six and three.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: It would be six and three is my record.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: So okay, yeah.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I I don't know where you got that from, but no.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Um I I don't get it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: I don't get what we did.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: See, it would make sense if football like won a national championship or won a Big 12 championship, and then you had like many, many more years after that of like unsuccess and bad luck and all that kind of stuff.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: We didn't win anything, and we're still getting punished with quarterback injuries every single year.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I don't understand it why it's almost like a tradition for us now.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Now it's just like a ritual experience where oh, the Texas Tech quarterback got hurt.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: That is the way it goes.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Because we're never surprised anymore, like ah, quarterback's out once again.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Who would have thought?
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: All three of them have been hurt this year at one point or another.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, Tyler Shuck broke his freaking collarbone again.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Baron Morton got rolled up on a on a dirty alligator roll tackle play, uh, and Donovan Smith hurt his shoulder against, I think it was UT, maybe it was Kansas State.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: But uh, regardless, um it uh why can't we have nice things?
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: What's the point?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Uh it's we were we're we're too good at the other sports that they're penalizing us on the gridiron, I'm afraid.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's fair.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, at least we're good at something.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: At least we're not Nebraska.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we could be Nebraska.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: That's Nebraska's terrible at everything.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're we're just bad at football, and I still have faith in the coaching staff and everything.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: We're being very Debbie Downer right now when it comes to the.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I love the lone stray that just went to Lincoln for no reason.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Nebraska deserves it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Our Husker listeners are gonna have some beef.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: All one of them, all one of them.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Uh no, um, okay.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts and opinions on the coaching staff right now?
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Because I think a lot of people are down on them.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Um, much, I mean, obviously, you've lost two games in a row against two of your interstate rivals.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and what are your thoughts on on Joey and Zach Kidley and DeRooter?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I think it's fair to say that the honeymoon phase is up.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You know, I we were kind of up in the clouds for a bit with them, like maybe a little unrealistic, but I mean, it was good, it was a good high that we were on.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: You know, it was good to support a coaching staff full sin because we didn't really have that in the last half, and the one before that was really losing all sorts of fan goodwill.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So it felt good to have fan complete fan buy-in once more, but I think it's safe to say that we're past the uh goody-goody fantasy.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're you can do no wrong phase.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: But uh, all in all, I'm not too disappointed with how things are going right now because you know, I told you at the beginning of the season I want six wins.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I think that's a good starting place for where this team was at.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And I think you're starting to see some growing pains with a young offensive coordinator and Zach Kidley, who is at a football level he's never seen before.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Um, so he's still probably trying to adjust to that and having to deal with you know juggling quarterbacks and res and wide receivers at this point, um, and having to deal with a paper tissue offensive line that's just kind of out of his control year one.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but I tell you what I am.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: I'm a Tim DeRuder believer.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Like, I hope we keep this guy as long as we can because that guy's the truth.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Our defense has been legit and not at all the reasons why we've been losing games.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: What are the first things that pop in your mind whenever you kind of run this down?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Um, I think people have been too hard on Zach Kidley.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: That's what I think the first thing.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Um, like you said, I I don't know a lot of teams that are going to succeed with an offensive line like what we have.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Our offensive line has been pitiful, like pitiful, very, very bad.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And it's we're missing Cole Spencer, who didn't play a game for us this year, and I think was really expected to be probably your best offensive lineman this year.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Um, Caleb Rogers has had a very, very disappointing season.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Um, we've had to switch out on the we were missing our whole right side of the offensive line against TCU due to injury, and we just weren't very deep in the first place.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And now I don't blame Coach Hambey.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I don't really necessarily even blame the players.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: They're just young, they're inexperienced, and they're not very good.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And your quarterbacks and your offense is not going to succeed very well when you have that poor of an offensive line.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and that's what Joey recognized early on.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's the first thing he said was we need to, you know, get better in the trenches.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: And that's what he's done with recruiting.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: He brought in a lot of young offensive linemen.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: He's planning on bringing in more every single year.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: And that's where you start, and that's how you get successful.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: So I think that's the first thing that pops out to me is that Zach Kidley's getting a little too much heat uh because I don't think a lot of guys would succeed with some of the personnel we have on our team.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Um, he has made mistakes, though.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not trying to say he hasn't done um, you know, he's a golden child or whatever, but um, you have two great running backs on this team.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: You got Taj Brooks, yes, Roger Thompson.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Those two are some of the best running backs in the entire Big 12, and you're just not using them enough.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Um, whether it's not running more run plays, whether it's just not getting them the ball in whatever way possible on a screen pass, on anything like that, these guys are too talented to be getting 18 total carries against TCU.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Um, so from that perspective, it's very disappointing.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Um, because you need to get those guys involved, and and the receivers just haven't stepped up like you hoped they would.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: And so um, to me, that's been his biggest downfall is just not getting the ball in the running back's hands very often.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I see that as well.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised your first critique wasn't the the whole cycling through quarterbacks so much.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I'm at this point, I'm just so used to it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, this guy's gonna get hurt, this guy's gonna get hurt.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: So, but no, it is that's disappointing.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: It sucks seeing all these guys go out for multiple games at a time with stupid injuries.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, it it's football's a violent game, we all know that, but man, it's getting ridiculous.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: I it's every year since Shimonek that we've had this happen to us.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: We've just had to cycle through and cycle through.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I was I was really frustrated when we did have all three that we were trying to play all three.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: That was another part that was really disappointing.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Um, because you just don't that's just not a winning recipe to play multiple quarterbacks in different situations, you throw them in sporadically.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, it just doesn't make sense a lot of the time.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: And that's what killed you in the Baylor game.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: That's what single-handedly lost you the Baylor game was keeping in the backup quarterbacks uh when they didn't need to be.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I I'm a firm believer in going with one guy.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and you you have your answer.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: That was the most confusing part of it, is you had the answer and you still didn't do it.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And I you know that that's on that's another critique of Kidley, I guess, or or Joey, whoever's choosing to do that.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, at this point, you just gotta play whoever's healthy, right?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and I I think we there's fans have every right to be kind of frustrated with how it's going.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but at the same time, we do got to remember it's year one, and yeah, I hope we didn't get our expectations too high with our our decently hot start.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: We were making some noise, upsetting some teams, but uh we still have a few more, a few more games to go.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And I think this one coming up in KU is a must-win.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I think we we do this is a must-win when it comes to ball eligibility and making a statement, though, year one.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: What are you thinking?
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, you have three winnable games to end the year.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Um, Kansas is winnable at home.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, who knows if Jalen Daniels is going to be the quarterback or not?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: But regardless, I still think he can beat that team even with Jalen Daniels.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: I think Iowa State names is a very winnable game.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: I don't think Iowa State, their defense is really solid, their offense is not very good.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma, we've seen them be really bad.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: And uh, although I do think Oklahoma is kind of figuring a few things out, um, I still don't think they're phenomenal as a football team.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, and I think you have you have two of those are at home.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I think you have a lot of winnable games, winnable opportunities here.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: And I hope you finish off strong.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, we'll just have to see.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, man.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm gonna be there.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be uh over there in uh in Lubbock, uh being all chilly, chilly boy, because it's gonna be a cold one and uh under the Lubbock lights, too, man.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: It's a night game.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: So hopefully the Jones is still believing enough to pack the house, get loud, and uh, I'm excited to get over there, man.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Excited to see uh throw a dub on the board.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Definitely jealous that you're making it up to the LBK.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Have not been able to do that, will not be able to do that this year, hopefully next year.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, man, I I miss that place dearly.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So y'all y'all go live it up.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, boots on the ground reporting for Talking Tech.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: All right, there you go.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Uh make sure you uh give me the account so I can do uh soda-induced happiness or sadness.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: I think that's a great idea.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I don't think we regret that at all.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Um phenomenal idea.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I will definitely not be deleting tweets on Sunday.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: But yeah, even still, even though you can't make it there, I'm sure Talking Tech will figure out a basketball game to get to.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: So well, you gotta come to Baton Rouge.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I tell you what, man.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: True.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, I mean, we gotta make it back to Austin Revenge game, especially with the wife's uh parties coming up.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Apparently, they line up.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Here we go, here we go.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Here we go all coming together.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Um, let's talk about some more fun.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about basketball.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Alrighty.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: First game of the year, it was great, it was on Monday.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: Um, we beat Northwestern State.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, the what are they?
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: The demons?
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just the demons.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: All right, not even not a special kind, yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Just the demons, just the Louisiana Demons.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh 73-49.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech takes the dub here.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: It was never in question.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: No, um, this game was fun.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: It was this game was fun just because you got to see a completely new team.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, we saw P we saw players that uh we just have never seen them play basketball before, and now they're all coming together.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: There's been a lot of hype all year.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you're still missing a huge piece in Fardos AMAC, but I I I think the first thing that popped out to me in this game was the performance of Daniel Bacho.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: The greatest basketball player of all time, the greatest, the greatest basketball player of all time.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: There's no question.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: There's uh to throw Michael Jordan at me.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: I don't care, it's not he's not as good as Daniel Boccio.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: No, LeBron James, he's not as good as Daniel Bachho.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Did LeBron James have 12 and 10 and 4 against Northwestern State on Monday?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: No, don't think so.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: No, Daniel Bachho did, but uh, I mean, seriously though, Daniel Bacho played really well, and he actually seemed like he was very confident in what he was doing.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: He was running the floor, he was finishing at the rim, he was playing great defense.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: I was thrilled with how Bacho played.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: No, I'm I'm 100% there with you, man.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I I think he played a phenomenal game.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Um, he had like I like how you use the word confident because he did feel good, he felt like a different player out there than last year.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Like he's you can see you can tell he's maturing, kind of finding his own identity on the team.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And everyone's been saying that, you know, he's been the most improved improved player on the team.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And he saw it last uh uh was that last night already or a couple nights ago.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the game.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Uh and he saw it, you know.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I'm really I'm right there with you, man.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of funny to say that he's one of the veterans on the team at this point, you know.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And I think he's you know, we're worried about losing uh Fardoz, but dude, I think he's kind of sliding into that role just fine.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think he's definitely like if we were to lose a starter, you know, I I guess I'm all right that it's A Mac because of because of Bacho, because he's our he's the backup there.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, he obviously popped out, I think, first and foremost.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but really the young guys, can we talk about the young guys for a second?
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Because Pop Isaacs is a sniper, he's a bucket dude.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: He is a straight bucket.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, every time that dude shoots, I mean it's like KO status for me.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: When when Pop Isaacs takes it from downtown, I'm expecting him to make it.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: I he's a weapon, dude.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: I I I was gonna say, I think he's probably my most like most surprising player for me the other night because I whatever I was just shocked that he had his shooting ability because I think one of the first ones he drained, he was like a few feet off the uh the line.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, okay, so he can take this from anywhere on the court and it's gonna be fine.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: So I was really impressed with how that young man, this freshman, this true freshman, came onto the court and just really started dominating at the highest game.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he got uh he got the starting knot.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Uh they went with Bacho O'Banner, Tyson, Davion Harman, and Pop Isaacs.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Um, which was, I think if you listen to our basketball preview, that was kind of what uh Ryan and me were saying uh was going to be the starting five.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: But um, no, super excited.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, every every young player, Jalen Tyson, when Robert Jennings got in at the end of the game, he played really good.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Elijah Fisher showed you some stuff that um not a lot of players his age are gonna be able to do.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: He was he was a little timid.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I'll give you that.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: It's your first game.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: You're one of the youngest players in college basketball going in, playing at in the toughest conference.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: In the I mean, this wasn't against the conference opponent, but still, you're playing in front of a ton of people.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Um, I I thought, I thought once he got those nerves out of the way, he was really uh he really showed you what he can do with that chase down block, that freaking one-handed rebound he grabbed on the seven foot three guy.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, if once he gets there mentally, he's uh he's gonna be an NBA player.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: It's really great seeing these young guys be able to hold their own because they're not the those aren't the players you typically typically expect to you know get your workload out of.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And to see these guys already stepping onto the court and making moves, it's it gives you a lot of confidence for this season.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: And if we retain them, you can only build on it.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So it's it's awesome to see these guys come out of the gate hot.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: I it's a good sign.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you're playing Northwestern State, it's not a not a world beater by any means.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Put some respect on it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Uh uh, you know, shouts out to uh the demons, but um can you tell me what town they're in, Steven?
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Uh they're in Louisiana, yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: You're you should you're a bad rouge, therefore you should know every town Louisiana.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Northwestern state.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Are they in uh Hammond?
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Are you do you have it in front of you?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: No, I was asking.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: I thought you had it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I was asking the Louisiana ex hold on now.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say Hammond.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: They're in Natchetis.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: You know Natchet's how they say it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Natchedis.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: They say stuff wrong here.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Uh but no, uh no, I didn't know that.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I think that's like an hour away from me.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: But um no, I it's not a world-beating team.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, I I'm glad these guys played well against an inferior opponent.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna learn a lot about this team when we start playing good teams.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Um, now there's certain guys that I think are gonna have the same mentality.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: I think Pop Isaacs and I think Lamar Washington are two dudes that are gonna play hard every night and not be afraid of the moment.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Now, I could see a guy like Jalen Tyson or Elijah Fisher maybe you know not showing as much confidence as they showed against Northwestern State.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying it's gonna happen.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: That's just a prediction after watching one game.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but regardless, I I was thrilled with how all the young guys came out in this one and really played their butt off.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: 100%, man.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and can we just acknowledge the crowd that was in the USA?
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Even Twitter was like Twitter strangers were enamored with Lubbock, Texas.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: With our environment on opening night was spectacular, perhaps the best in the country.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, seriously, I we have the best fans in the country, and I I feel I feel pool confident saying that.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think one of the best things that um some people have said when you're talking about your home crowd is you want to show up for your team.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: You know, you don't want to get to the point where you're showing up because of the opponent.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: And Texas Tech used to be that way when we weren't very good at basketball.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: You get a good opponent in town, you start selling out the crowd.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: That's that way in football right now, and we we hate to admit it, but that's what it is.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And so going and seeing your crowd show up for the first game of the year against Northwestern State and absolutely pack that place is just awesome.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: It just shows you where your program's at, and it just shows you how much of a home court advantage you're gonna have every single night.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And I I'm thrilled with it.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: I I love that you said show up for your team.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: And and for it to be the students, like really student-led, that it's just now this is a ritual for students that you know, oh, we don't miss the whole game, bro.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: You go in the you go in the game tonight, duh.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Like, I bet that's just kind of they're gonna be a line out the door.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And I mean that we we we love our supporting our teams whenever it's it's it's definitely there.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: So I love that we are doing that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And I just it makes me so proud as a Red Raider fan.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: You see the swag serve, I think Jeff Axton posted it on Twitter.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's like a packed game against Kansas.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, it looked just like that.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: So it really did.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Shouts out to the students.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I I know we don't have a very uh uh uh difficult non-conference coming up.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: We're gonna play a lot of bad teams, but uh, I mean, you can just rely on our team, rely on Lubbock and the fan base to show up every single night.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: And uh the energy was felt.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: That was something about it.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Um, you these guys fed off the energy real quick, and it's difficult to do when your stadium's half full.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Um, and our stadium was definitely not half full.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So just shouts out to all the fans that showed up.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cheers to that, man.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Um, other than that, I uh you know, some of the veterans I thought played really well.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And and um, you know, KO obviously uh was a was you know knocked down a shot.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Uh he didn't have to do much this game, which you know, because Bacha was having such a good game.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Uh so I I thought KO played well.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I thought uh I was really watching him as a leader, as a vocal guy on the court.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: And he was pulling guys together in the huddle every single time.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: He's telling guys where to go, where they potentially missed something.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: And uh that's the role KO has to have with such a young group with him.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: He's better, Kevin.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, what more is there to say?
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: And that yeah, you took my line.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was definitely gonna say he looks like the leader out there, and that's what we expected him to be.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's just so good to see him back out there, dude.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Um, Jalen Tyson showed you a little bit of what he can be.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: He was having a little some cramping issues, I think.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And so he was in and out, but you know, he hit that first three, and you're just like, okay, this is it.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Jalen Tyson, the guy we were thinking about.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, I thought he played good.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, eight points and five boards, um, knocked down.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: His shot looks really nice, which is cool to see.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So it it Is do we just have a long list of Steven's enamored shots?
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Like what player he's obsessed with for the role of leader is?
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know if Jalen Tyson is there yet with KO and Pop Isaacs.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Because Pop Isaacs has that stroke where you're just like, dude, insert your list.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Pop is that dude.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: And he had he had five turnovers, and Dave Yon Harmon had a few turnovers.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And that was kind of the one complaint that I saw from a lot of tech fans is the turnovers.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Um, you're playing in a much faster offense than last year.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Um, you're playing with a lot of freshmen, you're playing with a brand new roster, you're gonna have a lot of turnovers in your first few games.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: You just aren't.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, everybody does.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: So I I like the pace that they played with.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: And because of that faster pace, they're gonna have more turnovers at the beginning of the year when they don't when they haven't played enough together.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the you know.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: So I'm not I'm not concerned at all with the amount of turnovers we had.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's all about finding each other's rhythm, which where it's just such a natural progression to move for your move through your uh your your your formations and your lines.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: So that makes a lot of sense, whenever you put it that way.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: Um Demarian, Demarian and Kerwin, I thought played really well.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Um, they're your kind of veterans coming off the bench, could potentially start a few games for you, depending on the opponent.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Kerwin, we were told as a three and D guy, a guy who's just gonna stand on the perimeter, shoot some shots, um, you know, and play.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: He's a lengthy guy, play some defense.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: He was making cuts, he was moving on offense, he was playing great defense, which was something that was a knock on him in North Carolina.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Was he just wasn't putting an effort on defense, he was in it, and I think that dude, if he can play like that every night, is going to be a really consistent piece for you.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Um, now again, bad opponent.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Uh so you know, you we can look at a bad team that you beat by 20-something and say, okay, yeah, everything's everything's coming together really nicely.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Well, man, it's you say yes, we can keep saying bad opponent, but it's night one.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: You know, there's it's it's not like they're gonna be crushing these teams like they would at full force, you know.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: There's still a lot of kinks to be uh working out.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So for them to be playing like they are and meeting those exceeding those expectations of a game one, that makes you feel good, no matter who you're playing.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Look, you could have been Oklahoma or TCU on the first.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: LMAO.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, LMAO.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: I wish we could be saying here, like you coined this, and I don't want to be taking your your thunder here, but TCU almost got bluffed.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Um almost got bluffed.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And I wish we could that could have happened, so we could be saying bluffed as a term because it's not we can't we can't keep say that if it didn't occur.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Arkansas Pine Bluff almost had him.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Um, if you didn't watch the game, which I'm sure it was going around because we just lost to TCU in football, and so we're really hoping that they're gonna you know take an L on the opening night of everyone.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: That's true, but no, yeah, they they almost they almost went down.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Mike Miles hit a big shot at the end of the game, but it really it took the end of the game and a game-winning shot to beat Arkansas Pine Bluff at home.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Um, so that was funny, and then Oklahoma actually lost to Sam Houston State on a last second three.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Hilarious.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Go Bearcats, baby.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Go and Bearcats.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: My Lions blew it, dude.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: They didn't they have like a substantial lead?
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: No, but they were leading kind of they took like they were leading in the first half, TCU kind of took a decent lead.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: They came back and then they played it tight through the last, I don't know, five, six minutes of the game.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, no, TCU TCU's getting a lot of hype going into the year, the basketball team.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: They are, I mean, a lot of people I was on with Beers and Buckets again, the lost episode.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna pop out because we had some uh issues going on.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, rest in peace.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, rest in peace.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: It was a fun, it was a fun episode.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: But we were previewing the Big 12, and basically those guys are really high on TCU.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Like they were saying TCU number one, number two in the conference, and I was like, okay, hold on, fellas.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: TCU is going to be good, they're going to be a top four or five seed in this conference, but let's not act like TCU is a national title contender all of a sudden.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And they returned a lot.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Jamie Dixon's a pretty decent coach in his own right, but I I just slow the roll on TCU for a second.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, no, I'll slow the roll on TCU anytime, no matter how good they are.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, don't slow the roll on Baylor and Kansas because they look very good.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Uh Kansas still has some things to figure out.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Baylor looks unbelievable.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Um, they played a terrible team too, but they won by like 60, I think.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're very good.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Baylor's very good.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Kansas is good, UT's good.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: This sucks.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: It's like it.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: This is the best basketball conference in the country or something.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: I just wish it could have been any of the other teams.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, but UT did play it tight with UTEP.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, they still can't score, they're still playing the Chris Beard offense, which is terrible.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Love that.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Love, love that.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Love that.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: They play good defense, uh, but you know, whatever.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: So, speaking of offense, let's let's bring it on back to Levitt real quick.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: So, what do you think?
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: What is so what do you think of the new impressions on the uh new way of getting the ball through the hoop?
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I like it a lot.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Um, I like the much faster pace.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: I like that there's a lot more shooting.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Um, that's the first thing that pops out to you is uh just when you you're when you were watching last year's team, you just didn't have a guy you were super confident in taking a shot.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, you were confident Bryson Williams, you know.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Me personally, I was confident when Kevin O'Banner took a shot, but really our outside shooting was abysmal last year.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, it was.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: It was it was very bad.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Statistically, we were one of the worst three-point shooting teams, I think, in basketball history, uh, for being so good, for being a sweet 16 team.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: You know, our our shooting was not there, and we made it work.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you have to give credit to that team for that.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: But man, it's so nice seeing Pop Isaacs or Davion Harmon or Jalen Tyson or O'Banner.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, Kerwin can shoot, you know, Lamar Washington knocked down a three, Damarian can shoot.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: It's like everybody on this team, like on the floor at one time, you have at least three shooters, which is really, really, really fun.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: No, absolutely, man, especially what to what we're used to.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: We're usually just used to grinding the other team down, but now we can actually see some fireworks as well.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, you're gonna give up some defense because last year's team was built to be uh an unreal defensive team.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: They just were, they had a lot of length, they had a lot of size, um, you know, the no-middle really works with that type of roster.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: And it's gonna take some time for this team to get it defensively, but you only gave up 49 points.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: I thought you still played really good defense.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the good thing about having Mark Adams as your head coach is he could teach me to play elite defense if he wanted to.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I would uh the the thing that Mark Adams would do was bench me.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: That's that's gonna make him a good coach, but no, he can teach a lot of guys really good defense.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and I thought Davion Harman played really well on the defensive side.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: I thought KO played really well.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Boccio, I thought Jalen Tyson, the most impressive part of Jalen Tyson to me was his defense because he was getting that hand in the face.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, almost every single time.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: He had a few deflections.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: He is bought into the defensive style.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Um, that I think a few of these young guys are it's gonna take them a little time, but I think Jalen Tyson's already there.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's surprised.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: We have a good defense.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Surprise.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: That's shock Adams literally the best in the nation.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: Uh uh.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: That's one shocker.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Hyped about it, hyped about it.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Um, really fun, really fun team.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they're gonna go through their lumps, I think.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, with just being young, you know, you're gonna have uh some bumps and bruises here and there.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: I think uh Maui's gonna teach you a lot because you're playing some really good teams right off the bat.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you got a couple games before that, but um, regardless, I think you have a good team.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: I think you have a competitive team every single night.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: And uh when Fardos gets back, it's just gonna be that much more deadly.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: And a fan base the match, man, to sport them.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: So dude, I can see I can see how giddy you are.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, you you got your sport back, baby.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: It's fun, man.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: It's the best time of year for you.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: It's like Christmas.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: It's fun.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: The Spurs suck.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Tech football is going to their normal downside towards this time of the year.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: So I am all in on basketball, baby.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: We're ready.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: All right, dude.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: So uh anything else to add to the to the to the game?
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: No, not really.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think uh yeah, I think we beat a we beat a bad team.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: I'm excited for the next one.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Hey, we'll let the demons go on and be special, bro.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: You gotta you gotta you can't just be dropping them.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: How about that absolute unit they had?
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, dude, that man was a giant.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: That guy was terrible at basketball.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Um, it's not it's not his fault.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: He's 7'3.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, you're playing at a school that's not very well known.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're obviously not very coordinated.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Um, one thing I will say about the big dude is towards the end of the game, when Robert Jennings was playing a lot, true freshman, he was battling with the big man.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: And there were some elbows thrown, and he was battling with him.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: And I love to see it because he's like, I don't know, Robert Jennings about six, seven, six, eight.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: And this dude's six seven three.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, Robert Jennings was playing the big in the lineup, and he was having a battle with him for boards, and he was fighting his butt off, man.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: I love to see it.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, that guy stinks, he's not that fan.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: All right, so so anyway, and another kind of obscure basketball news.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: So last week, we whenever uh we weren't able to add this to an episode, there was a rumor going around.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Well, it wasn't even a rumor, but um, that Brighton, it was a report, your your superstar commissioner who locked us in in a great media deal, by the way.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Miss Steven and I we don't know, we don't know enough about the business side of this to really give you a good analysis on that.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: It was good, it was good though.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, we got more money, we got more money.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: It's the Big 12's healthy.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: That's what that's all we wanted to hear.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Survive and thrive, baby.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Let's go exactly, exactly.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: But into expand on that Big 12 brand, you apparently met with Gonzaga to add them into the fold of the Big 12.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Um, obviously, that has to be pretty preliminary talks.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, if it's in person, obviously, not just it's not just a little flirting.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: This is obviously was a serious discussion, but if to fly all the way from Spokane, Washington to Dallas, Texas.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: But what what did you initially think whenever you heard that?
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know how it's gonna have very good implications financially, but man, it's gonna be fun if it happens.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Like my initial thoughts were you're not gonna catch the SEC Big Ten in football.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: You're just not.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: And the caliber of teams they have are gonna be more and they're gonna keep growing and everything like that.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: But what you have the opportunity to do is establish yourself as the best basketball conference.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: And if you get Gonzaga, I mean Gonzaga, Kansas, Texas Tech, Baylor.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Who beats that?
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Nobody beats that.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: So I like that he's looking at these options.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: And now I you know, when it comes to adding them in as a basketball only, is it basketball and baseball?
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Is it basketball, baseball, other sports?
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: I don't think exactly as a football team, do they?
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: No, they don't have a football team.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I mean they would just be a certain sport ad, and I think that's fine because they are that elite of a basketball program right now that I think it's relevant.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they they're they're they're probably the best basketball brand that's not really married to anybody, you know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: They're they're they're just kind of in their conference because they have to be, you know, it's not it's not from a real choice.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Um, and I like it because I feel like you're kind of you know playing games with the Pac-12 in the same way where you're doing something like that, just kind of flirting with the team in their own backyard.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: That's probably the biggest basketball brand on the coast, minus UCLA or so.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: So um I I think it's fun, but I I think it's probably a little too complicated to happen, you know, because it it's a whole that's a whole lot of uh stuff to deal with whenever you're dealing with a team that uh just there for basketball because you probably have to reduce their payout substantially, yeah, compared to everybody else.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, they wouldn't get they wouldn't get an equal share.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: No, it it probably wouldn't be very close either, because if you're if you're being fair with it, and obviously Gonzaga wouldn't be all wouldn't be all in on that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: And I just think it would probably be a little too complicated to work, but I do like that we're talking about I like that we're being creative, I think it's fun.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Um, and obviously, I think if we if it ended up happening, I wouldn't be mad about it.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: I think having a 13 team, uh, you know, the 12 plus one sort of conference is fun, and you know they have to have the best uh basketball brand on the west coast that's not UCLA.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: That sounds like fun, yeah.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: And then you potentially add another just basketball only.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: You could add like a I don't know, a Creighton or like a Villanova.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: That that would be you know difficult.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I think, but what uh what the interesting part of it is is Gonzaga West Coast, Brett Yormark said in a report earlier, I think this was like months ago, that we're looking to expand West Coast, and we're looking to see everybody thought that was Pac-12, everybody thought, hey, we're gonna take Arizona and all that.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: But I think this could be the initial ad before you potentially take a few more Pac-12 schools.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Um, so I don't know.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: I I I this would make basketball really fun.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: And this would this would solidify yourself as the best basketball conference in the nation, and that's something.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: I know it's not the revenue that football brings, but it's something.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, I college basketball is arguably the most fun college sport, whatever you like in the in the total package, and totally not just because we're good at it.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: The the obviously the tradition and pageantry for for football is unmatched, but in like total package, college basketball is probably the most fun because like the postseason, there's nothing that comes even close to college basketball, and it it's go the the NCAA tournament is the greatest event in sports, yeah.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: I mean outside of like maybe the Olympics, you know.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I mean, yes, you're right.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, worldwide, the Olympics and the World Cup and all that shit, but no, it's like for me personally, the the NCAA tournament is the best part of the year though to watch sports.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: I think I think it's even professional sports, right?
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: I think I think March Madness is where it's at.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I just thought it was kind of funny to uh to bring that up and it has a little bit of a bow on the basketball conversation.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: I just I like and I I I know I kind of brought this up before, but I like having a commissioner that has a vision, yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: You know, this guy has a mission and a vision, and it's good to finally have some direction because before just kind of felt like we were just kind of floating out there, just kind of existing.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Now feels pretty good to actually feel like we're moving forward in something.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you definitely like a guy who's not stagnant.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, the last guy, Bullsby, was stagnant.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Stagnant.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: He was he was fine with just where we were, and that's not how you're gonna survive in uh college sports these days.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I like your mark, I like what he's doing.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: Um, and we'll just see how it goes.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously, the number one ad right here is getting some Pac-12 schools still.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Uh sure.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: I I still think stealing Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah is is the move, but um, you know, we'll just have to see.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Apparently, there's a clause, and I mean I don't, I just well, from what I've seen from people that probably know a little bit more than this, and that I do is that the clause to expand the big the Big 12 now is it would apparently negotiation negotiations could immediately reopen if you had a power five team, yeah, not a G5 team.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and the media deal was short, it was six years, so you know, after when that media deal is up, you can look to expand.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: By that time, who knows, Oregon and Washington could be invited to the Big Ten.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Exactly, and the ACC might be crumbling apart, so exactly.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, a lot to come with realignment.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: This is far from over.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but what we can enjoy right now is this basketball team because they're very fun.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: 100%, sir.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: So um, I think their next game is against Texas Southern tomorrow, which is Thursday.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: Um, man, I wish I was arriving in Lubbock a little earlier.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: I always because I was so mad at the time.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: 7 p.m.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: man, 7 p.m.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: ESPN plus uh we're playing Texas Southern, who's actually made the tournament uh a couple times in the last couple of years.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're like a 16 seed, but uh that means they've won their conference, so I don't know.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe I'll just ditch uh school a little early.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Be like, all right, kids, I'm out.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: All right, kids, I'm out, gym teacher taking over.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: Here you go, guys.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Learn about the civil wars all right.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Dodgeball, dodgeball.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: All right, I'm out.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Hands.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: No, enjoy where are y'all going?
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: What are y'all doing?
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, loving traditions, you know, you gotta go to Jimmy's and have a Coca-Cola, you gotta go to uh we're definitely going to Evie May's.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Um, that that that that place truly is life-changing.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: So, and uh I'd never been.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Dude, that's the best sausage, barbecue sausage I've ever had in my entire life.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: So I'm going back and gonna shove pounds of it into Tristan Tristan McGonagall shoving pounds of sausage into that's what I heard, right?
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Yes on that's what's happening.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Full transparency.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, that's one thing that I regret while I was in Lubbock.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I never went there.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you'll never go back to Lubbock, so you can't have it again.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: I'm going to do that.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: It's a flight, and flights are expensive.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, guy.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: So uh, yes, no, but uh excited for you, excited for Clay.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Excited that y'all are just gonna go party and have a good time without me.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: It's funny.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a better, it's it's better that way.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Whatever, guy.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: All right, I'm gonna do nothing this weekend.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: So um, all right.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Anything else for the people?
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: I I don't think anything else is on the docket, sir.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: It's good time of the year.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, it was signing day today.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: I will uh we should mention that.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Bad Texas Tech Baseball, like the eighth best class in the nation.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, as always, Tim Tadlock doing work.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Put it on the board.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Excited for baseball season.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: As always, we're gonna be good, it's gonna be fun.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Uh and and the rest of the sports shouts out shouts out to the lady Raiders.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: The Lady Raiders went on like a 25 to 10 run in their opening night for their basketball season, and they were they showed something that I haven't seen from a Lady Raider basketball team in a while.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, they've been very bad for a while.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: And you know, we're all hoping Krista Gerlich turns this program around and you lose a really good player in Vivian Gray.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Um, how are you gonna you know make up for that?
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: And you were still missing a few players from opening night, and you still really crushed a team that a year, two, three, four, five years ago, you would not have crushed.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah so shouts out to them.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I think they're really improving.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I'm I'm still on Krista Gerlich.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I still think that she's definitely the right woman for the job.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and she's fully committed.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: So I I think she's still 100% fired up to be the head coach for Texas Tech basketball.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think she is the drippiest drip coach I've ever seen.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: So I'll never, never not say that.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: It's like obligory.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: I have to say it every time I bring up Krista Gerlich.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, she's uh she's stylish as hell.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: She is, dude.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: She's killing it.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I think it was what was it, the boots?
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's wearing these amazing fringed boots, dude.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: These red suede boots with the 806 sweater, she's killing.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's unreasonable.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Unreal.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: This is rocks.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, and then uh I think soccer added a few more people, volleyball added a few people.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we're we're hyped about the future of those sports as well.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: I think we have some good coaches along the way.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Um, we don't talk enough.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: We got away from it on this podcast a lot from talking about the other sports.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Yes, we have apologies.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Apologies.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: We support all of Texas Tech sports.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: I do catch as many games as I can.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Me too, yeah.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Like I was watching the Lady Raider game.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, this is good.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: This is good.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Crowd showed up.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know it was kind of a two-in-one deal, like people were waiting.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: They played right before the men played, but still, it was awesome to see uh a good crowd there and supporting the Lady Raiders because I mean that's a national championship brand right there.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Um, that that we hope gets back to it.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dude.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: And seriously, ESPN Plus is a beautiful thing.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, we gave ESPN a lot of shit, but it's a beautiful thing.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a good thing.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: It's it's great to have access to a lot of this stuff.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's not just because we just re-signed with them on our TV deal.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: No, at all.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: No, it's fun.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: It's fun, it's easy access.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Go pay for it.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: ESPN Plus, give us a uh give us a sponsor deal sponsorship right now.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: Talking tech on ESPN Plus.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Hey, nobody would love to see that.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Nobody, not a single person.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: If you're like, who are these clowns on ESPN Plus?
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Right now.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Who are these two?
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Is that their bedrooms?
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: So football sucks.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I wouldn't expect talking tech on ESPN Plus anytime soon.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Too ugly.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: Now we can't reveal all the talks that we're having right now, but one's definitely not with ESPN.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: But yes, that's it.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't I don't have anything else Texas Tech related.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: I think we can get the song of the week and finish everybody out here with a good time.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I I just have one more thing to say about tech sports before we uh walk off.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: I think my wife Annie put it perfectly about what's kind of distinctually fun about a sport like basketball is that it feels way more personal with the players, you know, because there's only there's only a few of them on the court, they're not wearing all these pads, and you just kind of feel like you know the players a little more than you do on say the football field.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: I I kind of felt it, it was a vibe, and I just kind of wanted to include that, you know.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: I can kind of see that.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: I can kind of see that.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's less, I mean, you know, five guys at a time.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Yep, it's uh, you know, you see their faces, you see the emotion.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: You can't you can't really see the emotion through the helmet all the time.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's more games.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's and we're good at it.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna watch a lot more of it, you know.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: It's very easy to relate, uh to those guys.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, no, that's a good thought.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Um, right on, man.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: Well, cool.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, what's your what's your song of the week there?
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: Dude, you know, I'm kind of this one might surprise you, but I'm going to go with Marin Morris.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: You know, all right.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you know, Country Star, who kind of took a took away into pop music for a bit.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: Um, but she released her, you know, her newish album, Humble Quest.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: And the uh one of the uh one of the songs on the the opening song on the album is called Circles Around This Town.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: And I really love that song.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: You know, it's about the songwriting process, and it sounds a lot like My Church and 80s Mercedes, kind of the the songs that really kind of got you to fall in love with like her sound.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: And I think this she just nailed, so like kind of caught that lightning in the bottle again, even though it's not gonna be one of her biggest hits.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: But I think this song is just like perfect, Marin Morris.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: I drove circles around the stall, trying to ride circles around this now, try to say something with me that's so right on, man.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: I like Marin Morris, I like her stuff.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, my my fiance, Kristen, is not too fond of Maren Morris.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: She doesn't like it when I don't know, she just doesn't like her.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: It's whatever.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: I don't play Mary Morris in the car.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: I'll play Marin Morris when I'm just listening to it.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: Uh but no, I think she I think she has some good jams.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right on, dude.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Um, my song of the week, I'm also gonna stay with the country theme.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: Um, it's a song that none of us have done before.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's called Jamestown Ferry by Charlie.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just kidding.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: Uh I thought you were about to just complete that sentence without a laugh.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, okay.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, we're doing Jamestown Ferry again.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: No, um, I'm gonna throw it uh back to the two, I think 2000s.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Uh Cowboys and Angels, Justin Lynch.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Uh Dustin.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: The only good song that guy has ever made.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know any other songs by that guy, but I like this song.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: I can tell you that first and foremost.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: This was a jam back in like eighth grade or whenever that thing came out.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh it's it's a jam, Cowboys and Angels, Dustin Lynch.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: She's sweet out of danger.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Dude, I I I I I'm with you, but like I said, literally the only good song he's ever made.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: I know I know I could not name another one.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: He's still pretty popular, and it's all of its trash.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: It all sucks, dude.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: Right on.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: This is a good one, though.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: This is he nailed it with this one, and that's it.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: He tricked us all.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: He tricked us all.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: Uh man, who was another one that tricked us all?
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: Uh uh uh Chris Young.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, Chris Young.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: What what neon neon?
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, he had like a streak of three good albums that ruled, and now everything since has sucked.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Well, that was like, I mean, Zach Brown Yeah, Zach Brown.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: We had we had last time Ryan suggested uh colder weather, and old Zach Brown, you said it's on the last I mean, some of the best music there really is, uh-huh, and they just went downhill.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's very bad.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, yeah.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: So I'll give you another one that went downhill, Dustin Lynch.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: Dustin Dustin Lynch must much more so than those other guys.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, there were there were at least multiple albums that were good.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: This was just one and done.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, hey, we're gonna end it off right there.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: Enjoy some cowboys and angels and some uh Marin Morris um circles around this town, of course.
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: Uh all right, we're gonna end it off like we always do.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.

- 49:07SPEAKER_01: We would very much appreciate it.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: We love the reviews that are coming in, even the ones that are crapping on us because of Tristan's terrible uh blink 182 takes.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, we appreciate any sort of feedback.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: Let us know what we're doing right and wrong.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, but as always, we're gonna end it off.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: Always wreck them tech.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: Wreck them tech.
