Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to splash Hit territory. We have
- 0:10Speaker 1: a very special guest with us. Tony Vaitello. Just got
- 0:14Speaker 1: back from picking up his parents from the airport, ran
- 0:16Speaker 1: in there, put his uniform on, jumped in a chair,
- 0:19Speaker 1: turned on his computer and now you get to talk
- 0:21Speaker 1: with us. So Tony, thank you for joining us for
- 0:23Speaker 1: a little bit today. We appreciate your time.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you for having me.
- 0:27Speaker 3: And as always, i'd like to put it out in public,
- 0:30Speaker 3: thank you for how much you do for us during
- 0:32Speaker 3: spring training. I don't know what the other years are like,
- 0:35Speaker 3: but this year was awesome, so I appreciate it. It was
- 0:38Speaker 3: it was fun getting to know the guy that I
- 0:40Speaker 3: watched on TV and when you when you were out there,
- 0:43Speaker 3: I kind of thought you were crazy, and then getting
- 0:45Speaker 3: at getting the medium in person, it proved it true.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That's right, Hey man, I love that stuff. Man, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: like crazy crazy is fun for me.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Uh. You know, Tony, I appreciate you coming on. Man.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You know what I was thinking about with you coming
- 0:59Speaker 1: on today and I was like, I want to put
- 1:01Speaker 1: away the manager hat for a second. You get a
- 1:04Speaker 1: lot of those questions. I'm sure Susan's going to have
- 1:07Speaker 1: some for you. I don't need to tag team that,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you know, that's her job. But I just first, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I got to hang out with Bruce. We were fly
- 1:15Speaker 1: fishing a couple of weeks ago. Bochie and I was
- 1:18Speaker 1: just life man. We get to talk life and I
- 1:20Speaker 1: just love that about him and we put away that
- 1:22Speaker 1: whole managing thought process. And just for me for a second,
- 1:27Speaker 1: if you could take the manager hat off, I like
- 1:29Speaker 1: to talk about the human side.
- 1:31Speaker 4: You're one hundred and whatever we are.
- 1:33Speaker 1: We're one hundred and twenty, one hundred and twenty get
- 1:35Speaker 1: plus games into the season. But if you could give
- 1:38Speaker 1: a little insight, if you could just Tony Bytello, who
- 1:42Speaker 1: is he now?
- 1:43Speaker 4: From opening day? Like? What have who is Tony right now? Now?
- 1:48Speaker 1: These experienced one hundred and twenty games as a big,
- 1:51Speaker 1: big manager.
- 1:52Speaker 4: It has not been all roses. What thoughts do you
- 1:56Speaker 4: have on that?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it is all tied in the job.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think maybe the key is in life when you're
- 2:03Speaker 3: trying to figure out what you want to do. You
- 2:05Speaker 3: want to figure out what do you want to do
- 2:07Speaker 3: for a living. That's your passion, not your job. And
- 2:11Speaker 3: so if you are fortunate, you know to be one
- 2:13Speaker 3: of those that are doing something that they maybe get
- 2:17Speaker 3: compensated for. But if they do it anyway, even if
- 2:19Speaker 3: they weren't, then your life is your job, and so
- 2:22Speaker 3: it's kind of hard to take the manage your hat off.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But I do think this.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Has been a healthier and trust me, no one's wearing
- 2:31Speaker 3: it more. And you guys come out to the field
- 2:34Speaker 3: and I have so much respect for the tradition here
- 2:37Speaker 3: and I meet a guy like Swan Dunstan's, I mean
- 2:39Speaker 3: that was one of my idols. I mean, I was
- 2:41Speaker 3: shaking myself that day, and then we don't perform well.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I'd like to say no one's wearing it worse than
- 2:47Speaker 3: I am internally. But having said that, this has been
- 2:51Speaker 3: a much healthier version of just being a human being.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I think I don't know how football coaches do it
- 2:59Speaker 3: one week in one game, and one game can literally
- 3:01Speaker 3: get you fired in the SEC or the NFL, and
- 3:06Speaker 3: it's it's not quite that heightened sense, but in college
- 3:08Speaker 3: it truly is. If you don't land a portal guy,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it can ruin your season or tarnish it. You know,
- 3:16Speaker 3: there's only ten weekends that there's such a big deal,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and when you get on that bus after a tough loss,
- 3:22Speaker 3: it rips you inside and out for a while. And
- 3:26Speaker 3: I kind of carried that theme into this season, and
- 3:29Speaker 3: a lot of it was just there was I don't
- 3:32Speaker 3: really read a lot, but I think there was so
- 3:33Speaker 3: much put into, you know, the storyline of someone.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Coming from college.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I just didn't want to be the one that interfered
- 3:41Speaker 3: with the success of the organization or these guys that
- 3:44Speaker 3: are adults, and a lot of them are established veterans,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know. I just wanted to make sure I supported
- 3:50Speaker 3: and then you know, obviously did my job too. But
- 3:53Speaker 3: when it didn't go well right out of the shoot,
- 3:55Speaker 3: I was doing that sec thing.
- 3:58Speaker 2: If it makes sense.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Over and old Charlie Condon is eventually going to get
- 4:02Speaker 3: called up with the Rockies. I remember when he called
- 4:05Speaker 3: and said he was going to Georgia instead of Tennessee.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I threw myself on the couch and I didn't move
- 4:09Speaker 3: for like two hours.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And at this level.
- 4:14Speaker 3: You have to adjust and become a human being when
- 4:17Speaker 3: you take your jersey off, take advantage of your off days.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I remember Dusty yelled at me about how I was
- 4:23Speaker 3: spending my off days. So I've made an adjustment ever
- 4:26Speaker 3: since I had a really fun one yesterday. So in
- 4:29Speaker 3: a better place would be a summary of that long
- 4:32Speaker 3: winded answer.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard though, you know what you're trying to
- 4:36Speaker 1: say how I would say, how I would say And
- 4:39Speaker 1: it seems cliche, and Susan got cliche answers from us
- 4:42Speaker 1: all the time, but it is what it is. Hey,
- 4:46Speaker 1: there's one hundred and sixty two games. You can't win
- 4:48Speaker 1: them all. You know you're gonna be one hundred and
- 4:50Speaker 1: sixty to two and zero.
- 4:50Speaker 4: There is that thought process. It can be taken too far.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And I can tell you from what I've seen over
- 4:56Speaker 1: the last you know, one hundred and twenty games, or
- 4:59Speaker 1: four or five months, whatever you want to call it,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I've seen that growth in you, to be honest with you,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I've seen that where you're starting to me. I just
- 5:05Speaker 1: want to tell you what You're on the right path,
- 5:07Speaker 1: where you're coming out of that shell, where you're not
- 5:09Speaker 1: making excuses for the guys. I know what you did early.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's great to protect you're a manager. You do what
- 5:13Speaker 1: you got to do. But now, like what you said, hey,
- 5:15Speaker 1: that when people say growing pains, you said, don't have
- 5:17Speaker 1: to be you know, it doesn't have to be.
- 5:19Speaker 4: It doesn't to be like that.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Like you are starting to push back a little bit
- 5:23Speaker 1: on the guys, which you should, because they are grown men.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Like you said, they make a lot of money and
- 5:27Speaker 1: they're going out there and they're grinding. But we're not
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to be complacent. We can't be okay with what
- 5:32Speaker 1: we got going right now. So I can tell you
- 5:34Speaker 1: that I've seen that growth in you and I appreciate it,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and I think you I don't.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I'm sure you don't listen.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You don't probably read a lot, but one of the
- 5:42Speaker 1: things I said is I need to see you get
- 5:43Speaker 1: thrown out about five more times, but I need to
- 5:46Speaker 1: see like good snaps, like I want you in the
- 5:49Speaker 1: like I said, he's do it like he's got to
- 5:51Speaker 1: do with these umpires, like get thrown out, man, get
- 5:54Speaker 1: in there, grill like snap on them. Get We used
- 5:57Speaker 1: to grade Boche's tosses like that was a freaking eight.
- 6:00Speaker 4: You better clearly like.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Get out there, you know, like I need to see you, know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I want to see that from you because I think
- 6:06Speaker 1: it's in there and I think that that fire that
- 6:08Speaker 1: you had when we did see you in the sec
- 6:11Speaker 1: when we did see you at Tennessee. When you're snapping,
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's okay to have that, and I think that you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: you're you're feeling your way through that a little bit.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But what has actually been what do you think has
- 6:20Speaker 1: been easier than expected?
- 6:22Speaker 4: Though this year?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Man not a whole lot.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Would be the first name I think, to be honest
- 6:29Speaker 3: with you. You know, when I got my theories and
- 6:32Speaker 3: I just throw them out to Susan and the media
- 6:35Speaker 3: about the difference between there and here. But just dealing
- 6:40Speaker 3: with people, whether it's the front office, ownership, former players
- 6:47Speaker 3: like I mean, Pablo Santoval's respect level for me is
- 6:52Speaker 3: the most comical thing of all time. I mean, hit
- 6:55Speaker 3: three homers off off Erlander and I could barely put
- 6:58Speaker 3: the ball in play. But the people in the city too. Sure,
- 7:04Speaker 3: there's you know, comment here and there. You hear when
- 7:07Speaker 3: you're at home, you know if it's not going well,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and to me, that's justified to be honest with you.
- 7:14Speaker 2: But just dealing with the people has been some mesaged.
- 7:16Speaker 3: It's been kind of a carryover of you know, it's
- 7:19Speaker 3: with Peyton, it's with coach Hypel. The love affair for
- 7:23Speaker 3: any college USC is like that. You know, if you
- 7:26Speaker 3: perform well, they embrace you. And uh, it's been every
- 7:30Speaker 3: bit of that.
- 7:31Speaker 2: If not better good.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Let's talk fathletics, shall we. They have apparel for every season.
- 7:39Speaker 5: We're wearing it as we talk about it. It's soft,
- 7:41Speaker 5: it's comfortable. I wear it on the show sometimes on FT.
- 7:44Speaker 5: What else do you love about itcrats?
- 7:46Speaker 6: Well, I have it on right now and I'm all
- 7:49Speaker 6: about quality. But you know what, you know how good
- 7:52Speaker 6: your clothes are when you're a parent and your kids
- 7:55Speaker 6: keep stealing all of it. My daughter stole the sweatshirt,
- 7:59Speaker 6: my son sol my t shirts. So it's got to
- 8:01Speaker 6: be nice looking.
- 8:03Speaker 5: And if it gets a little bit chillier then it's
- 8:05Speaker 5: layering season and they've got layers for the fall. Shop
- 8:09Speaker 5: now at fabletics dot com slash foul to get seventy
- 8:12Speaker 5: to eighty percent off everything when you sign up as

- 8:17Speaker 5: sure to select foul when prompted to unlock this offer.
- 8:22Speaker 5: This is a limited time offer, so do not wait again.
- 8:25Speaker 5: That's fabletics dot Com slash foul for seventy to eighty
- 8:30Speaker 5: percent off everything as a new VIP.
- 8:34Speaker 7: Tony I have a follow up question for you from
- 8:36Speaker 7: your from your first answer, how did you spend your
- 8:39Speaker 7: off day?
- 8:40Speaker 3: I just went to LA with some buddies and one
- 8:43Speaker 3: of our better friends that had moved south to Palm
- 8:47Speaker 3: Springs drove up and we went to a concert, didn't.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I mean, we've got injury.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Stuff going on, so kind of took a little time
- 8:58Speaker 3: to try and get an assessment on all that.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And you try and do the lineup the day before, but.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Just try to be lazy, to be honest with you,
- 9:05Speaker 3: and then hooking up with that crew and telling some
- 9:07Speaker 3: old stories was a lot of fun. And I tell you,
- 9:11Speaker 3: we did make one comment one of my best friend's wives.
- 9:16Speaker 2: We talked about.
- 9:17Speaker 3: She's like, man, at least you don't have to check
- 9:18Speaker 3: your phone every five minutes while we're hanging out anymore
- 9:21Speaker 3: to see if teenagers are texting you or you got
- 9:24Speaker 3: to call somebody or something like that.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So this is a different kind of grind.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's definitely a grind, But like I said, I think
- 9:31Speaker 3: it's taught me to be a little bit more of
- 9:34Speaker 3: a person, not just kind of a robot.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Well I do.
- 9:37Speaker 7: I also, Jeremy's right, I'm going to ask the baseball stuff.
- 9:40Speaker 7: But one of the interesting things here at post trade
- 9:44Speaker 7: deadline is how do you look at this last two
- 9:47Speaker 7: months I guess six weeks now when you've mentioned winning
- 9:51Speaker 7: is still very important. Of course the wins and losses
- 9:53Speaker 7: are important, but you've also got a factor in some
- 9:55Speaker 7: development because you've got a lot of young players, which
- 9:58Speaker 7: seems like a right in your wheelhouse, and also sorting
- 10:03Speaker 7: through your various options as you look at next year's roster.
- 10:07Speaker 7: How do you how are you looking at finding that
- 10:09Speaker 7: balance with all of those things.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a little bit of it as always is,
- 10:14Speaker 3: and again at the end of the day, I've got
- 10:16Speaker 3: to make a call or put pen to paper and
- 10:18Speaker 3: things like that. But I've always enjoyed group discussions and debates.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So part of it is the group getting together and
- 10:25Speaker 3: mapping out to this point, who does everybody want to see?
- 10:29Speaker 3: And then how are we going to balance it out?
- 10:31Speaker 3: So I think, you know, early on it was just
- 10:33Speaker 3: kind of these are our guys and they're out there.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I think we're going to go from one extreme to
- 10:37Speaker 3: the other and kind of map out ahead of time,
- 10:40Speaker 3: just this guy's going to get sixty percent of the games,
- 10:43Speaker 3: this and that, So I think it'll it'll be a
- 10:46Speaker 3: little bit of an organizational challenge, but it'll be a
- 10:49Speaker 3: lot of fun as far as being organized.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But yeah, I.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Think it's extra time before the game and after the game,
- 10:57Speaker 3: and maybe even on an off day checking on a
- 10:59Speaker 3: guy and reminding them this or that because he is
- 11:02Speaker 3: a younger player and needs to learn quicker. But when
- 11:05Speaker 3: the game starts, it needs to be better baseball and
- 11:09Speaker 3: it'll probably come out of me. So Jeremy will be on.
- 11:13Speaker 2: An umpire, but it'll be on somebody.
- 11:16Speaker 3: There's been a lot of there's been a lot of extra,
- 11:18Speaker 3: little extra stories this year, and you got to write
- 11:21Speaker 3: about stuff, and there's it's fun to debate, but at
- 11:25Speaker 3: the core of everything is we just have to play
- 11:27Speaker 3: better baseball. There's not a guy that's gonna step on
- 11:31Speaker 3: the field for us tonight that that can't catch a
- 11:33Speaker 3: baseball or throw strikes or compete in the box. And
- 11:38Speaker 3: you know, if you can do it once too, it
- 11:39Speaker 3: means you can do it again. So we've just got
- 11:42Speaker 3: to execute better. And I think the coaches have slowly
- 11:45Speaker 3: started to learn each other better and maybe how to
- 11:48Speaker 3: communicate with some of the players and then eventually us
- 11:52Speaker 3: working as a group together, because it isn't just on
- 11:54Speaker 3: the players, but they are the ones out there.
- 11:56Speaker 2: We just have to play better baseball.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Right, You got to play better baseball, and you got
- 12:00Speaker 1: to be able to get the veterans to be able
- 12:02Speaker 1: to step in and be leaders too. Right, Yeah, not
- 12:04Speaker 1: only do we gotta play better baseball, I need you
- 12:06Speaker 1: guys to go out there and lead show these young
- 12:08Speaker 1: guys what it takes to prepare for a major league
- 12:11Speaker 1: baseball game. This is the big leagues. This is like,
- 12:13Speaker 1: this isn't like we're not developing. We can always get better,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but this isn't the minor leagues. We called it semi
- 12:19Speaker 1: pro ball down there, right, It's not semi pro. This
- 12:21Speaker 1: is pro ball, and there's an expectation at this level.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And so for you going out there and managing that
- 12:27Speaker 1: and having that that thought processes is to me, is
- 12:30Speaker 1: going to be a game changer because these kids need
- 12:32Speaker 1: to know that. But managing veterans is not the same.
- 12:36Speaker 1: It's very, very tough to do. What have you seen
- 12:39Speaker 1: when you got college kids that you have been that
- 12:42Speaker 1: you've been managing, versus now.
- 12:44Speaker 4: You did skip it. It's it's you can't not ignore.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Everybody talks about it, Well, he went from college to
- 12:49Speaker 1: the big leagues, blah blah blah.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Great, But what does managing veterans?
- 12:53Speaker 1: How does how? How did that feel? I mean, it's
- 12:55Speaker 1: got to be something a little different than what you expected.
- 12:58Speaker 1: How has that been this year for you?
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been different because I think.
- 13:04Speaker 3: A lot of people, a lot of people thinking I've
- 13:09Speaker 3: stepped back too much. But to be honest with you
- 13:12Speaker 3: and talk with Buster and the guys in the offseason,
- 13:15Speaker 3: like that's how I've always been. I've been a big
- 13:17Speaker 3: believer of freshman year to sophomore year to junior year.
- 13:21Speaker 3: You get coached different, and the whole goal is to
- 13:23Speaker 3: build a player that is a junior draft guy or
- 13:27Speaker 3: a senior. You're coached in a way that you can
- 13:31Speaker 3: coach yourself on the field, and you become a coach.
- 13:34Speaker 3: You become a basically like Drew Gilbert was so good
- 13:37Speaker 3: at being another voice, basically repeating things that we would
- 13:41Speaker 3: say in a meeting, then repeating him in the locker room,
- 13:44Speaker 3: and he became like an additional coach.
- 13:46Speaker 2: The difference is.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And I'm not saying we were geniuses or knocking anybody,
- 13:52Speaker 3: But we had that time beforehand to build that foundation.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And then when you get a guy like Gavin Keelan
- 13:59Speaker 3: who comes from a great program at Louisville, he's kind
- 14:02Speaker 3: of got that foundation he had there. We meet with him,
- 14:04Speaker 3: we talk about the changes, and then we have a
- 14:06Speaker 3: whole semester in a half. Even just having Gavin for
- 14:10Speaker 3: one year, we still got a semester and a half
- 14:13Speaker 3: to build that foundation of like, this is what we're
- 14:16Speaker 3: looking for, this is what works, not this doesn't work here,
- 14:21Speaker 3: and instead here it's just come and you know, some
- 14:25Speaker 3: of these guys have had an insane amount of success,
- 14:28Speaker 3: so to come in guns blazing didn't make a whole
- 14:30Speaker 3: lot of sense to me. But you don't have that
- 14:33Speaker 3: same page that you're on from being a part of
- 14:36Speaker 3: the person's foundation.
- 14:37Speaker 5: This is that time of year, Aja, it is Baseball's
- 14:40Speaker 5: time to shine, and it is sea Geek's time to
- 14:44Speaker 5: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing seating
- 14:48Speaker 5: and games that are even sold out available on sea geek.
- 14:53Speaker 8: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 14:56Speaker 8: coming up, we have Yankees clubs coming up. Where's Yankee's
- 14:58Speaker 8: Red Sox that means stuff. Again, there's some big moments
- 15:01Speaker 8: that are coming up here in the as the penachases
- 15:04Speaker 8: really heat up. Go to you can find those green
- 15:06Speaker 8: tickets with the best deals and get yourself out to
- 15:09Speaker 8: an MLB game.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 15:13Speaker 5: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 15:16Speaker 5: feel is your best.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Look.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Green dot means very good code for you. It's Territory
- 15:23Speaker 5: ten ten percent off your next set of MLB tickets
- 15:26Speaker 5: at sekeek. That's ten percent off MLB tickets when you
- 15:30Speaker 5: use the promo code Territory one zero. Make sure you
- 15:33Speaker 5: click the link in the description to download the app
- 15:35Speaker 5: and have the code automatically added to your account so
- 15:37Speaker 5: you can use it later.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I think Boats helped me out as a veteran player.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Him and I would tow a line a few times
- 15:46Speaker 1: because I get weird a few times and I expected
- 15:49Speaker 1: certain scenarios. But you know, I remember getting after him
- 15:52Speaker 1: and he looked at me and he said, Hey, here's
- 15:54Speaker 1: the deal. My door is always open to everybody, veterans, rookies, etc.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna have different conversations with you as a veteran
- 16:03Speaker 1: as I might have with some of the younger guys. However,
- 16:06Speaker 1: you can ask me any question you want, but if
- 16:07Speaker 1: you don't want the answer, don't ask it. Because I
- 16:09Speaker 1: would get on him about not pitching me in certain scenarios.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I wanted to pitch right, So I'm like, I did
- 16:14Speaker 1: not him, and I did not agree. Sometimes when I
- 16:17Speaker 1: did not go into the ballgame and he said, well,
- 16:19Speaker 1: if you don't want you want the answer because you
- 16:21Speaker 1: asked a question, I said, yeah. He's like, your feelings
- 16:24Speaker 1: don't matter to me. He's like, I'm trying to win
- 16:26Speaker 1: a ball game here, and that to me is a
- 16:28Speaker 1: huge thing for a veteran to hear your feelings do
- 16:31Speaker 1: not bother me. So I can pull you out of
- 16:33Speaker 1: a game like you did the other day with Rupe.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Great, I know you want in the game.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I love it. I freaking love it. That's your feeling. Great,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I gotta try to win a ball game. I'm making
- 16:42Speaker 1: the decision, you know. So those are kind of things
- 16:45Speaker 1: that for me, a manager leads well in when they're
- 16:47Speaker 1: not afraid to look at veterans and say feelings do
- 16:50Speaker 1: not matter.
- 16:51Speaker 4: I'm trying to win a ballgame.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I hear you, you're coming out or maybe you'll talk
- 16:55Speaker 1: me into it, but I make the final call. And
- 16:57Speaker 1: man Boach kind of put me in my place a
- 16:59Speaker 1: little bit there and didn't let me influence too much
- 17:02Speaker 1: of it. And I think that's where I fell back into,
- 17:04Speaker 1: like really choosing to let him lead, you know.
- 17:07Speaker 4: So that's a big deal for me. So those are
- 17:09Speaker 4: kind of things I think veterans need to know.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and something I think as a as a coaching group,
- 17:15Speaker 3: starting with me, it's gotten better with some individuals. Looking
- 17:19Speaker 3: back on it started off too slow in that category,
- 17:23Speaker 3: but still trying to break down that barrier of you know,
- 17:27Speaker 3: you pitched like a guy that wasn't afraid to go
- 17:29Speaker 3: into the manager's office. And I'm not saying I don't
- 17:31Speaker 3: have guys that do that, but I don't, and I
- 17:34Speaker 3: don't know how other people were. It's been awesome to
- 17:37Speaker 3: get to know Boach and Dusty, but I still think
- 17:42Speaker 3: the manager label just comes with this list of stereotypes.
- 17:45Speaker 3: But we're all different, and I'm all for somebody like
- 17:49Speaker 3: I love the roop thing, and you know, me and
- 17:51Speaker 3: Webby had our you know, when he stayed in that
- 17:54Speaker 3: Cubs game, it was probably more interesting than everybody realized.
- 17:58Speaker 3: But we haven't had a lot of conflict. I mean,
- 18:01Speaker 3: the Chapman Schmidty thing is maybe the only thing that
- 18:04Speaker 3: the public knows. And then, you know, I tried to
- 18:08Speaker 3: blow it up and say, there's only been two other times,
- 18:11Speaker 3: you know, anyone that has said anything unfriendly, And next thing,
- 18:14Speaker 3: you know, we had three incidents in the locker room
- 18:16Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 18:17Speaker 2: But we just haven't had conflict. And I told the
- 18:21Speaker 2: player the other day, well, yeah, it was ruper and
- 18:23Speaker 2: I came in here, we sat.
- 18:24Speaker 3: We always talk after his outings, and I feel like
- 18:27Speaker 3: I'm maybe as close with him as anybody.
- 18:30Speaker 2: And we meet even if it's fake. You know.
- 18:33Speaker 3: I remember when Pat Murphy was at Arizona State, they
- 18:36Speaker 3: faked a fight on the field during pregame in and out.
- 18:38Speaker 3: They ended up losing the game, and I don't know how.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Smart it was. Murphy is definitely smart, but for that team,
- 18:44Speaker 2: it didn't work. But we just haven't had that.
- 18:47Speaker 3: And the one thing I said to Wash the other
- 18:50Speaker 3: day when we were talking about a debate with a player,
- 18:54Speaker 3: was you can't fight with a stranger the way you
- 18:57Speaker 3: would with your brother or your sister. And it's because
- 19:01Speaker 3: you care and there's feelings, and I think there just
- 19:06Speaker 3: needs to be more of that. People are so invested
- 19:09Speaker 3: that they don't like when the first basement didn't catch
- 19:11Speaker 3: the ball and they let them know. Those two guys
- 19:14Speaker 3: are as close as can be. But that's a moment
- 19:17Speaker 3: that maybe hasn't been replicated enough this year. Not that
- 19:20Speaker 3: we want strife and stuff like that, but you just
- 19:22Speaker 3: want people that are all in.
- 19:25Speaker 7: I mean, I have one quick last one for you
- 19:28Speaker 7: before we let you go. I think Jeremy probably wants
- 19:30Speaker 7: to finish up with somebody too. But one of the
- 19:32Speaker 7: things that's been really fun this last month and a half,
- 19:35Speaker 7: two months maybe is the increased emphasis on Stanley Basis,
- 19:40Speaker 7: base running, pushing the action, even some bunting, maybe a
- 19:43Speaker 7: little bit of hit and run here and there. How
- 19:46Speaker 7: are you seeing that aspect and what kind of difference
- 19:50Speaker 7: might it make for a team like this, especially a
- 19:52Speaker 7: young kid. You've had all these young outfielders bringing up
- 19:55Speaker 7: Turner Hill today Jonah Cox's back seems like you have
- 19:58Speaker 7: even more opportunities.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it just seems to be in general,
- 20:04Speaker 3: a young man's game. And I don't mean you have
- 20:06Speaker 3: to be below thirty five years old. It's just these
- 20:10Speaker 3: arms out of the bullpen are so good, and runs
- 20:13Speaker 3: can really be at a premium at times, so you
- 20:17Speaker 3: have to get active, and you've got to be athletic
- 20:19Speaker 3: on defense and offense. And there seems to be a
- 20:23Speaker 3: lot of personnel coming up, and the two guys you
- 20:25Speaker 3: mentioned are extremely athletic. That helps support what we want
- 20:29Speaker 3: to do. But I think what we did was we
- 20:32Speaker 3: just adjusted, and easy to argue for anyone out there
- 20:35Speaker 3: to say we adjusted too late. The flip side of
- 20:38Speaker 3: that coin, as you come in and you look at
- 20:40Speaker 3: the names on paper arise, you just let him hit
- 20:44Speaker 3: and then Ramos not that he can't hit, but you
- 20:47Speaker 3: also kind of hope he hits another one in the water,
- 20:49Speaker 3: which he's the only one that's ever done that. And
- 20:51Speaker 3: it just didn't work for us, and you knew it
- 20:54Speaker 3: was going to turn, and it did turn in May,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and I really feel like since then we've played better baseball.
- 21:01Speaker 3: It's just been we haven't got into the one run
- 21:03Speaker 3: games or close games. We can if you all want,
- 21:07Speaker 3: but it's it's not going to work with the personnel
- 21:10Speaker 3: that's on the horizon. And then probably even just with
- 21:13Speaker 3: the personnel we had just to sit back and say,
- 21:14Speaker 3: let's see if we can outswing you. So I think
- 21:18Speaker 3: it's been great, it's been fun. I appreciate you saying that,
- 21:21Speaker 3: but I think in our eyes, we got to there
- 21:23Speaker 3: needs to be more.
- 21:24Speaker 2: We got to build on it.
- 21:25Speaker 3: And sometimes you guys will pick something out that's dead on,
- 21:29Speaker 3: but more times than not, when I'm in here for
- 21:31Speaker 3: the last for the ten minutes after the game, I
- 21:33Speaker 3: beat myself up over missed opportunities to do even more
- 21:36Speaker 3: of that.
- 21:37Speaker 2: So hopefully we can build on.
- 21:38Speaker 7: It even better.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Tony, and we know you got to go, man.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate you
- 21:45Speaker 1: jumping on with us. You got a lot of stuff
- 21:47Speaker 1: that you got to kind of get prepared for and
- 21:50Speaker 1: deal with and all that good stuff. But I just
- 21:52Speaker 1: want to tell you, man, thank you. I appreciate you
- 21:53Speaker 1: coming on. You didn't have to, and I've seen I've
- 21:56Speaker 1: seen your growth and I want to encourage you that way.
- 21:59Speaker 1: So keep grinded, man. I think there's a lot of
- 22:01Speaker 1: things that you got put put into this year that
- 22:03Speaker 1: I think is going to help you be very successful
- 22:05Speaker 1: in the future. You got some young kids coming up.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I think some young guys on your team. Now, I
- 22:09Speaker 1: think there's some talent coming and I know Buster is
- 22:12Speaker 1: trying to definitely try to get you in arsenal that
- 22:15Speaker 1: you can get in there and slam the door on
- 22:17Speaker 1: some of these games. But man, and just enjoy your
- 22:19Speaker 1: final two months. Man, and get these guys grind and
- 22:23Speaker 1: run your kind of baseball how you want to run it,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and don't apologize for it.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Man, you're doing great.
- 22:27Speaker 2: No, I appreciate it.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yeah, these guys are young and exciting, and I've been
- 22:30Speaker 3: amazed at how our fans have come out, especially compared
- 22:32Speaker 3: to places we've gone on the road. There is reason
- 22:35Speaker 3: to still come out and see these guys. And then
- 22:37Speaker 3: we need to reinforce that with we'll be on a mission.
- 22:41Speaker 3: It needs to be an improved end of the year
- 22:44Speaker 3: and then, like I said, we got to execute better.
- 22:47Speaker 3: So the offseason will be one thousand percent put towards that.
- 22:50Speaker 3: But appreciate all the support and definitely appreciate you all.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Good. Thank you, I appreciate you.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Take care
