Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Thursday, it's the 4th of
- 0:17July. Well it is for a number of you,
- 0:20but I've been having a look at when people are listening to the
- 0:23different episodes and well, people keep on dipping back into
- 0:28episodes so I've got no idea what day it is for your friends.
- 0:31I just hope that whatever day it is Thursday or later that you
- 0:36are doing well. Good to have your company, but
- 0:39whatever day it is, do you know, I need to well, I need to add a
- 0:43little correction, a correction into what I said a couple of
- 0:46days ago. I was listening to the podcast
- 0:49Oha couple of days ago and I thought, hey, Sean, you got it
- 0:51all wrong because I was introducing the gospel of John
- 0:55saying, isn't it wonderful to be a fly on the wall as we get to
- 0:59listen to what Jesus is doing and saying with his disciples.
- 1:03And I thought, you know what, friends, we are never just a fly
- 1:08on the wall. We are actually a character in
- 1:11this story. This is not.
- 1:14Did you remember reading or not reading?
- 1:16Do you remember watching the never ending story when you were
- 1:18a kid? And you're watching it thinking,
- 1:20wow, that book, it's real. It interacts with its reader.
- 1:24That's incredible. Well, this this book is even
- 1:29more incredible than that because it is the words of the
- 1:32living God spoken by God himself through John to us and you and I
- 1:39friends, we are today Jesus disciples.
- 1:43And so as we hear his words, those words are not just to his
- 1:47disciples around him at that time, but they are to us as
- 1:51well. These words travel through time
- 1:53and space, right to our hearts. Isn't that something?
- 1:57So fly on the walls, eat your heart out.
- 2:00We are disciples of the living God.
- 2:03Let us hear what the next chapter of John brings.
- 2:06You ready? Ohhhhh Yeah, me too.
- 2:09Let us enter into the story once again, as captured in John
- 2:14chapter 5. Afterward, Jesus returned to
- 2:27Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days.
- 2:30Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the Pool of Bethesda
- 2:34with five covered porches. Crowds of sick people, blind,
- 2:39lame or paralysed, lay on the porches.
- 2:42One of the men lying there had been sick for 38 years.
- 2:47When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he
- 2:51asked him, Would you like to get well?
- 2:55I can't, Sir, the sick man said. For I have no one to put me in
- 2:59the pool. When the water bubbles up,
- 3:01everyone else always gets there ahead of me, Jesus told him.
- 3:06Stand up, pick up your mat and walk.
- 3:10Instantly the man was healed. He rolled up his sleeping mat
- 3:14and began walking. But the miracle happened on the
- 3:18Sabbath. So the Jewish leaders objected.
- 3:21They said to the man who was cured, You can't work on the
- 3:25Sabbath. The law doesn't allow you to
- 3:27carry that sleeping mat. But he replied, the man who
- 3:31healed me told me pick up your mat and walk.
- 3:35Who said such a thing as that? They demanded the man didn't
- 3:40know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
- 3:44But afterward Jesus found him in the temple and told him, now you
- 3:48are well, so stop sinning or something even worse may happen
- 3:53to you. Then the man went and told the
- 3:55Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.
- 3:59So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the
- 4:03Sabbath rules. But Jesus replied, My Father is
- 4:07always working, and so am I. So the Jewish leaders tried all
- 4:12the harder to find a way to kill him, for he not only broke the
- 4:16Sabbath, but he called God his Father, thereby making himself
- 4:20equal with God. So Jesus explained, I tell you
- 4:25the truth, the sun can do nothing by himself.
- 4:29He does only what he sees the Father doing.
- 4:33Whatever the Father does, the sun also does.
- 4:37For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is
- 4:40doing. In fact, the Father will show
- 4:43him how to do even greater works than healing this man.
- 4:47Then you will truly be astonished.
- 4:50For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the
- 4:54dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.
- 4:58In addition, the Father judges no one.
- 5:02Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge so
- 5:07that everyone will honour the Son just as they honour the
- 5:10Father. Anyone who does not honour the
- 5:13Son is certainly not honouring the Father who sent him.
- 5:18I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe
- 5:22in God who sent me have eternal life.
- 5:26They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have
- 5:29already passed from death into life.
- 5:33And I assure you that the time is coming.
- 5:36Indeed, it's here now when the dead will hear My voice, the
- 5:40voice of the Son of God, and those who listen will live.
- 5:46The Father has life in himself, and He has granted that same
- 5:50life, giving power to His Son, and He has given Him authority
- 5:54to judge everyone, because He is the Son of Man.
- 5:59Don't be so surprised. Indeed, the time is coming when
- 6:03all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God's
- 6:06Son, and they will rise again. Those who have done good will
- 6:11rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in
- 6:16evil will rise to experience judgement.
- 6:20I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me.
- 6:25Therefore, my judgement is just because I carry out the will of
- 6:30the One who sent me, not my own will.
- 6:34If I were to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not
- 6:37be valid. But someone else is also
- 6:40testifying about me, and I assure you that everything He
- 6:45says about me is true. In fact, you sent investigators
- 6:50to listen to John the Baptist, and his testimony about me was
- 6:54true. Of course I have no need of
- 6:57human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved.
- 7:03John was like a burning and shining lamp.
- 7:06And you were excited for a while about this message.
- 7:10But I have a greater witness than John, my teachings and my
- 7:15miracles. The Father gave me these works
- 7:18to accomplish, and they proved that He sent me, and the Father
- 7:23who sent me has testified about me himself.
- 7:27You have never heard His voice or seen Him face to face, and
- 7:31you do not have His message in your hearts because you do not
- 7:35believe me, the one He sent to you.
- 7:39You search the scriptures because you think they give you
- 7:43eternal life, but the scriptures point to Me, yet you refuse to
- 7:48come to Me to receive this life. Your approval means nothing to
- 7:53me because I know you don't have God's love within you.
- 7:57For I have come to you in my Father's name, and you have
- 8:02rejected me. Yet if others come in their own
- 8:06name, you gladly welcome them. No wonder you can't believe, for
- 8:10you gladly honour each other, but you don't care about the
- 8:15honour that comes from the one who alone is God.
- 8:19Yet it isn't I who will accuse you before the Father.
- 8:23Moses will accuse you. Yes, Moses, in whom you put your
- 8:29hopes. If you really believed Moses, he
- 8:33would believe me because he wrote about me.
- 8:36But since you don't believe what he wrote, how will you believe
- 8:40what I say? Lord Jesus, you are such a game
- 8:54changer. Not because you are the new
- 8:57thing, but because you shine a light on the old ways.
- 9:04In you we see the living embodiment of these thousands of
- 9:09years of revelation of the one and only God, All those prophets
- 9:15writing about you all that time, our Heavenly Father pointing
- 9:21toward you his ultimate revelation of himself to us.
- 9:26Oh Jesus, thank you that when you come showing us what God is
- 9:31like, you don't come with judgement, but you come with
- 9:37love. You come with the gift of
- 9:40eternal life to offer that to us, to draw us ever by your
- 9:46side, to spend eternity with you in your embrace, in your love.
- 9:53And so we choose you. We choose to live lives of good,
- 9:58to turn our back on those evil, broken, sinful ways that seem to
- 10:03ensnare us and draw us away. That no, we turn our back on
- 10:08that and we face you, our loving, living Saviour, the
- 10:17eternal God in human form. Now, we love you, Jesus, and we
- 10:22recommit our lives to you right now.
- 10:27And it's all in your name that we breathe, that we live, and
- 10:31that we pray. Ah, man.
