Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Charles Woodson to the defensive goat. I mean, you are
- 0:06Speaker 1: one of the best of all time.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Bro.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It is an absolute pleasure to have you on the podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Man.
- 0:10Speaker 3: You guys are shaping up to be best of all
- 0:12Speaker 3: time too, Like what you're doing.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Because we tried to get I remember I was I
- 0:20Speaker 1: was either we were on Twitter going back and forth
- 0:22Speaker 1: because she was a national one time. Yeah, I think,
- 0:25Speaker 1: trying to get you, but everything was way too tight.
- 0:27Speaker 3: But man, trying to make it happen. But yeah, the
- 0:30Speaker 3: timing was off a little bit, but you know, we
- 0:33Speaker 3: did it.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Finally got it done.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:34Speaker 4: We obviously jumping to Michigan like for how many years?
- 0:39Speaker 4: How we just been shitty and now finally we put
- 0:44Speaker 4: it all together this year. Man, what did that mean
- 0:46Speaker 4: to you as an alumni?
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, you know what what's crazy is that it wasn't
- 0:50Speaker 3: that we were shitty. We just couldn't beat them, guys.
- 0:53Speaker 3: We couldn't beat ohiose statement, Like that's really what it was.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Like.
- 0:57Speaker 3: We think about you know, Jim when he came in
- 1:00Speaker 3: was winning nine ten games a year, but then we
- 1:02Speaker 3: get to that last game and we could never get
- 1:05Speaker 3: over that hump.
- 1:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:06Speaker 3: So when we think back to Michigan and we see
- 1:09Speaker 3: that we had a shitty year, you know what I mean.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And so these last couple of years have just been like, dude,
- 1:18Speaker 3: I don't even know how to explain it. You know,
- 1:20Speaker 3: it's just it's it's not even that we won the game,
- 1:22Speaker 3: it's how we won the game.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And with all the all the storyline out the year too.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, just that game.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's the season right, Penn State, the har Ball getting
- 1:30Speaker 1: spend before the Penn State game as their travel and
- 1:33Speaker 1: he's getting told all while they're on the tarmac.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Literally and I was.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I was at that game because I was working with
- 1:38Speaker 3: the big noon kickoff crew that weekend. And we get
- 1:42Speaker 3: there and they're like, yeah, I don't know if Gym's
- 1:46Speaker 3: gonna be able to coach today. We're like, what are
- 1:48Speaker 3: you talking about? Like, yeah, you know, he was on
- 1:50Speaker 3: the plane. He got the word that he might not
- 1:51Speaker 3: be coaching, like on the plane, like literally on the
- 1:55Speaker 3: plane to Happy Valleys. You're talking about you can't play,
- 1:57Speaker 3: I mean, he can't coach. So it's a lot of
- 2:00Speaker 3: different storylines, you know, this particular season with him putting
- 2:05Speaker 3: people in place Mike Hart was a coach, win game,
- 2:08Speaker 3: head coach. This Shrone Moore, who's got the job now,
- 2:11Speaker 3: he was a coach for like three or four games.
- 2:14Speaker 3: And those guys, you know, just looking at looking at
- 2:18Speaker 3: that situation in the face and just being like, it
- 2:21Speaker 3: don't matter.
- 2:22Speaker 4: It's such a it's such a massive like statement to
- 2:25Speaker 4: the culture of Michigan because they had every excuse not
- 2:28Speaker 4: to achieve the goal of winning a national championship, right
- 2:31Speaker 4: And like you obviously you don't have to expand on
- 2:34Speaker 4: this at all, but how pussy was it of the
- 2:37Speaker 4: Big ten to dry to implement some sort of bullshit bandid, Hey,
- 2:42Speaker 4: we're gonna punish him Tony Patiti as they're flying to
- 2:44Speaker 4: Penn State and doing all that. That's just just.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Just bad ball.
- 2:48Speaker 4: There's no due process there. And so but the thing
- 2:50Speaker 4: I like about it personally is that if there were
- 2:53Speaker 4: all these allegations and they never took hardball off the field,
- 2:56Speaker 4: then it'd be like the true asterisk to a national championship.
- 2:59Speaker 4: But because you put all the adversity on and off
- 3:01Speaker 4: the field towards the Michigan players right now, it's like
- 3:04Speaker 4: there's there's truly like it didn't matter with gotten their
- 3:06Speaker 4: way that they were winning a national championship.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it truly was a Michigan versus everybody. You know,
- 3:12Speaker 3: the coin, the phrase that they coined, and also the
- 3:16Speaker 3: other one was bet.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You know they had that.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Uh, I forget after which game it was, but it
- 3:21Speaker 3: was just to say, all right, you guys are gonna
- 3:23Speaker 3: put put all of this on our plate.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Bet we'll handle it. And that's exactly what they did.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And you know, being in Happy Valley and you know
- 3:33Speaker 3: that being you know, our toughest game at to that
- 3:36Speaker 3: point on the schedule, and then coming out in that
- 3:38Speaker 3: second half and I think they threw the ball one
- 3:40Speaker 3: time and then from there on it was like just
- 3:43Speaker 3: old school Michigan football for all half, like just just
- 3:47Speaker 3: take this, take this, take this.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So yeah, it was. It was fun, man, the whole
- 3:52Speaker 2: the whole ride this year.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Man, I mean, you know, we were riding along with them, guys, man,
- 3:56Speaker 3: just on Cloud nine every week. And then when they
- 3:59Speaker 3: capped it off, I was able to go to the
- 4:01Speaker 3: semi final. Pasadena didn't make it to the championship game.
- 4:04Speaker 3: But watching that championship game and the way they performed
- 4:07Speaker 3: the domination, you know, that that, you know what, we
- 4:11Speaker 3: go back because you talked about the culture and that
- 4:14Speaker 3: was important with this team because of all of the
- 4:18Speaker 3: guys who said I'm coming back, I'm coming back because
- 4:21Speaker 3: we got unfinished business, and then they actually did it
- 4:25Speaker 3: like that was That's pretty special, man.
- 4:26Speaker 2: So I'm happy for them.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Guys.
- 4:27Speaker 1: What's it like knowing that you guys brought that Michigan,
- 4:30Speaker 1: Your guys university brought a national title in twenty twenty three,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and it's been since what like the nineteen forties since
- 4:35Speaker 1: you guys last won a national.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Title ninety seven. Man, Damn yeah, I know he did
- 4:42Speaker 2: it on purpose. I know what he did. I know
- 4:45Speaker 2: that was good. That good.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That's good.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's good. Okay, I see, I see how it is,
- 4:49Speaker 2: see how the show is gonna be.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Taylor and I obviously we always go back and forth.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Ye I mean, you guys have been whooping our ass
- 4:58Speaker 1: for a while.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I had to get that in because it's always like
- 5:02Speaker 1: if I'm if I'm put up against Taylor Dave Poortnoy,
- 5:06Speaker 1: we go back and forth. If I try to throw Nebraska,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and it's like all nineteen ninety seven. Personally, I feel like,
- 5:12Speaker 1: as a player, you like being the coaches pole National
- 5:17Speaker 1: Championship more than the AP national chair.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Well man, you know when you guys got up there
- 5:21Speaker 3: and start crying, you know, after the season about you know,
- 5:25Speaker 3: our coaches leaving and man, we deserve it.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Were like, what the hell is going on? Right? You
- 5:30Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 5:31Speaker 3: So you guys begged your way into that.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That was tough too, the coaches.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I guess we'll just give it to him then, like really, come.
- 5:39Speaker 1: On, I mean we you know, Nebraska beat And it's
- 5:42Speaker 1: funny because Charles is like he's a he was a player,
- 5:44Speaker 1: he was on the Michigan team. Like we're like, I'm
- 5:46Speaker 1: just sitting here, like, oh we Nebraska, Yeah you're eight
- 5:49Speaker 1: yeah yeah, old hey. But Nebraska beat Peyton Manning led Tennessee.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Oh man, they did.
- 5:55Speaker 1: They did average over forty a game. Fish can average
- 5:59Speaker 1: twenty something. However, they're defense.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You guys.
- 6:01Speaker 3: We were pretty mad about that too, because we go
- 6:03Speaker 3: out to you know, washingt this thing. We're like, all right,
- 6:06Speaker 3: you know, Tennessee, you know, give these boys a fight,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, because that's going to help
- 6:10Speaker 3: our calls if they roll down there and struggle and
- 6:13Speaker 3: Nebraska goes down there and slaps some boys.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It's like, damn it, what's it like? Because you guys
- 6:19Speaker 1: had you guys played more like top ten teams that
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're like, oh, i'll say the Big ten, like back
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the nineties, Like you guys had more of those
- 6:24Speaker 1: teams in the top ten. But like, as a player,
- 6:26Speaker 1: are you kind of hoping you get dealt like I
- 6:28Speaker 1: don't remember how it worked with the bowl game selection
- 6:30Speaker 1: back then, but are you hoping you get like the
- 6:32Speaker 1: higher matchup or did you already kind of know you
- 6:34Speaker 1: were going to play the PAC twelve champion?
- 6:36Speaker 3: There was a Pactorld Championship, so I think we were
- 6:38Speaker 3: a year before the BCS SOT. If it was a
- 6:42Speaker 3: year later, we would have had a chance to play.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It would have been it would have been Nebraska.
- 6:45Speaker 3: We'd have a chance to play in Nebraska, but were
- 6:48Speaker 3: just one year too early.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Man.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So yeah, we went out and played the winner, the
- 6:52Speaker 3: Pack twelve, and they played, you know, Nebraska.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So that's just where that's.
- 6:58Speaker 1: The way when.
- 7:00Speaker 4: You're when you're doing all the big new stuff and
- 7:02Speaker 4: it's your essentially your job, your obligation to be as
- 7:05Speaker 4: unbiased as possible, But all this stuff is like going down.
- 7:08Speaker 4: How do you catch yourself in Happy Valley thinking, all right,
- 7:12Speaker 4: Hardball's not on there, but you're on the sideline. I
- 7:14Speaker 4: think there's a clip of you and it might've been
- 7:17Speaker 4: Desmond Howard as well, like getting hyped up, like are
- 7:20Speaker 4: you like trying your best not to get excited?
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, like our producers and you know everyone who brought
- 7:27Speaker 2: me in.
- 7:27Speaker 3: You know at Fox, they know that when it comes
- 7:29Speaker 3: to Michigan, it is what it is like when I'm
- 7:33Speaker 3: on the set, I'm rooting for Michigan. I'm on the
- 7:35Speaker 3: sideline and room for Michigan. I'm going to be biased
- 7:38Speaker 3: as bias can get. So there's no secret. But yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 3: but when it comes when it comes down to like
- 7:45Speaker 3: really talking about the game, like keys the game, how
- 7:48Speaker 3: Michigan's Michigan, Michigan is going to win, on how State's
- 7:51Speaker 3: gonna win, I'll give the real but as it you know,
- 7:55Speaker 3: in terms of what my loyalties like, it ain't no
- 7:58Speaker 3: secret you.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Enjoy Cup in college more than the NFL because I
- 8:01Speaker 1: know he was doing NFL before you signed on with
- 8:03Speaker 1: with the NFL.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Is where it's at. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love the NFL.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Man college is too many damn teams in college.
- 8:10Speaker 1: There as I feel like you, like I enjoy the
- 8:14Speaker 1: school spirit of college because you just know you're pulling
- 8:16Speaker 1: for your team no matter what versus the NFL. Like
- 8:19Speaker 1: playing on a few different teams, it's like it's more
- 8:21Speaker 1: of like a player driven Like I'm kind of rude
- 8:23Speaker 1: for guys and players, And yeah, I like to see
- 8:25Speaker 1: the Raiders, the Titans, Washington do well. But like that
- 8:29Speaker 1: the connection with your with your school spirit in college.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it ain't nothing like it. It's nothing like it.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And uh, you know, I get asked that question like,
- 8:36Speaker 3: you know, you know why you why do you feel
- 8:39Speaker 3: the way you feel about Michigan?
- 8:41Speaker 2: You know why you love them so much?
- 8:42Speaker 3: And I answered this question not too long ago, and
- 8:44Speaker 3: I think it's like for me, it was the first
- 8:47Speaker 3: place I was trying to get to, you know what
- 8:49Speaker 3: I'm saying, being a being a high school athlete and
- 8:52Speaker 3: you know, you're getting out of all of these letters
- 8:54Speaker 3: and you know you're you're working towards, you know, trying
- 8:58Speaker 3: to do something bigger than playing in high school, like.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Michigan was like I'm trying to get there.
- 9:03Speaker 3: You know what I mean, and it was a dream
- 9:06Speaker 3: come true to you know, sign there and go to
- 9:08Speaker 3: Michigan and so you know that that that love of
- 9:11Speaker 3: you know, you know, trying to get to a destination
- 9:14Speaker 3: and reaching it. You know, it was was a big deal.
- 9:16Speaker 3: So you know that's why it runs deep. Yeah, you
- 9:20Speaker 3: had a really good interview on the pivot and I'm
- 9:23Speaker 3: trying to recall.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Can you tell the story about there was a game
- 9:26Speaker 1: where coach held you out and You're like, I'm not
- 9:28Speaker 1: going to go in and say sorry, and then your
- 9:30Speaker 1: mom's your mom say, hey, if you're not going to
- 9:32Speaker 1: apologize yourself, do it for me. Can you retell that story? Yeah?
- 9:35Speaker 2: It was.
- 9:35Speaker 4: It was.
- 9:36Speaker 3: It was just crazy because my you know, we had
- 9:38Speaker 3: played uh, I think I forget the game we played
- 9:44Speaker 3: before Ohio State. But anyway, I had my back locked
- 9:49Speaker 3: up for whatever reason, and I talked to the trainer.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, man, my back is locked up. I
- 9:54Speaker 3: don't know why I can. I can barely move. He's like, oh,
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't worry about it. You don't have to practice today,
- 10:00Speaker 3: and so I was like, great, But when I walk
- 10:03Speaker 3: out to practice, I don't have any Michigan issue stuff
- 10:06Speaker 3: on I just got my school stuff on. The coach
- 10:08Speaker 3: cars like what are you doing? I'm like what. He's like, what,
- 10:11Speaker 3: where's where's your uniform? I'm like, ah, man, I talked
- 10:14Speaker 3: to Smitty Smitty side and had to practice today. It
- 10:17Speaker 3: was like, I don't get in there and put something
- 10:19Speaker 3: on then, So I go in and put some other
- 10:21Speaker 3: stuff on, but I keep my white shoes on that
- 10:25Speaker 3: warder school.
- 10:26Speaker 2: What do you got on your feet? I'm like, what, man,
- 10:30Speaker 2: get in there?
- 10:30Speaker 1: And when you went back in, like, are you feeling like, oh,
- 10:33Speaker 1: coach is trying me a little bit?
- 10:35Speaker 2: A little bit? Yeah, a little bit.
- 10:37Speaker 3: But then this was ninety six, so a week before.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Ohio State gaming.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So I came back out and then I'm on the
- 10:44Speaker 3: sideline and talking with some of the fellas and coach
- 10:47Speaker 3: he sings me, Hey, come here, go over there to
- 10:50Speaker 3: the offense. Hey, you need to pay attention. I'm like, Coach,
- 10:52Speaker 3: I'm paying attention, Like what's going on? Man, Well, if
- 10:55Speaker 3: you're going to be on the sideline, you're not practicing,
- 10:57Speaker 3: you need to pay attention. I'm like all right, So
- 10:58Speaker 3: I walk on the sideline. Few periods go by, he
- 11:01Speaker 3: cast me back over there.
- 11:02Speaker 2: What's it get over here. I'm like, damn, what is
- 11:05Speaker 2: going on today?
- 11:06Speaker 3: Man?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Go over there.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Hey, if you're not going to pay attention, you can
- 11:08Speaker 3: just leave. And I was like, all right, I'm out.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So I left.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I went back to the I went back to the dorm,
- 11:15Speaker 3: and a little time passed, day or two, I don't know.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I can't remember the timeline of that. But I get
- 11:23Speaker 3: called down by my position, coach Vans Bedford. He's like, hey, listen,
- 11:27Speaker 3: coach wants to talk to you. When you go down there,
- 11:29Speaker 3: just go ahead and apologize, and then he's gonna let
- 11:31Speaker 3: you play this week. And I was like, Coach, now,
- 11:34Speaker 3: I'm not apologizing. He's like, listen to me, just apologizing.
- 11:38Speaker 2: So I go down there.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Me and coach talked a little while and he's like, a,
- 11:42Speaker 3: you know, do you think you justified yourself by walking
- 11:44Speaker 3: out of practice. I was like, yeah, man, because I
- 11:46Speaker 3: don't feel like you got to make an example out
- 11:47Speaker 3: of me and this whole thing. He was like, all right,
- 11:49Speaker 3: well you ain't playing this week. I was like all right.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I got up and walked out, went down there to
- 11:54Speaker 3: back to Coach Bedford's room, and he was like, all right,
- 11:57Speaker 3: what do you say. I said, I'm not playing this week.
- 12:00Speaker 3: He said, boy, I told you, don't go down there
- 12:03Speaker 3: and say nothing, but just apologize. Hold on a minute.
- 12:05Speaker 3: He gets on the phone. My mom answers MS Woodson.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I told this boy, don't go down there and say nothing.
- 12:14Speaker 3: He called my mom. Man and uh, Mama gets on
- 12:18Speaker 3: the phone.
- 12:18Speaker 2: What's going on. I'm like, I'm not playing this week.
- 12:21Speaker 2: She was like why.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I was like, man, you know, me and coach got
- 12:24Speaker 3: into it and this or that, and coach wants me
- 12:27Speaker 3: to apologize.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I ain't apologize. She was like, okay, well we'll just
- 12:34Speaker 2: do this.
- 12:35Speaker 3: If you're not going to apologize for yourself, apologize for me.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And I was like, kidding, she broke me. So she
- 12:43Speaker 2: broke it.
- 12:43Speaker 3: So man, I had to be you talk about being
- 12:46Speaker 3: to knee, I had to bend to knee man, moms
- 12:48Speaker 3: mom's And so I went down there and I was like, coach, man,
- 12:51Speaker 3: you know it's my bad man. You know, I'm sorry.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I shouldn't have walked out a practice. And that's all
- 12:58Speaker 3: he wanted. He was like, all right, playing this week, so.
- 13:06Speaker 2: You should you should have You should have saw how
- 13:09Speaker 2: slow I walked down.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I bet I brought up you brought up Schmidty, who
- 13:15Speaker 4: is Michigan Like, yeah, the head trainer for the longest time.
- 13:18Speaker 4: He's the guy that like, you get an X ray,
- 13:21Speaker 4: what the X ray say?
- 13:22Speaker 1: X rays?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Don't talk? Friend, keep walking?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, smart, smart smitty.
- 13:27Speaker 4: And then Big John Big Do you have any Big
- 13:29Speaker 4: John stories because I'll preface one real quick. So obviously
- 13:32Speaker 4: I was in the dark ages of Michigan with rich
- 13:34Speaker 4: Rodriguez and Bratty. No disrespect to them, it was just
- 13:37Speaker 4: that time that the alumb would come by and hey,
- 13:39Speaker 4: y'all suck, and.
- 13:40Speaker 1: That's just what it is. Tough always having the guys
- 13:43Speaker 1: in the nineties, like we had that too, where guys
- 13:45Speaker 1: you guys aren't well, we had when we.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Were at the Hot State game this year, some guys
- 13:49Speaker 4: came up and we were talking, Hey, what years were
- 13:51Speaker 4: you there again? I was like, oh, nine to thirteen.
- 13:53Speaker 4: You're like, oh, yeah, that's that's a tough time. But
- 13:56Speaker 4: when rich Rodriguez, I'll bring that when Richard Heez first
- 13:59Speaker 4: got the job, there's a story that Big John would
- 14:02Speaker 4: go and at like five in the morning and get
- 14:04Speaker 4: on the elliptical in the weight room, but naked, nothing
- 14:07Speaker 4: and he was like a sloppy body cat. Yeah, he
- 14:11Speaker 4: was just naked on the elliptical, sweat and dripping everywhere,
- 14:14Speaker 4: all over the place. And he was just and like
- 14:17Speaker 4: the most fun way of crude, like over the top,
- 14:20Speaker 4: like kind of just a horny old guy. But he
- 14:21Speaker 4: was like.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That being said, Yeah, I don't, I don't, Yeah, I don't.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I don't have the stories, like some of my teammates
- 14:30Speaker 3: have more in depth stories of Johnny, but Johnny was big.
- 14:34Speaker 2: John was kind of like, uh.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Like family guy, you know what I'm saying, Like just
- 14:43Speaker 3: inappropriately funny guy.
- 14:45Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 14:47Speaker 1: He always got one for.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Everybody watching, the most innocent fun way the soil Johnny.
- 14:53Speaker 2: What he did, he said, what he did? You know? So, yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 2: he was he was. He was that guy man, but
- 14:59Speaker 2: he he was a great guy.
- 15:00Speaker 3: But yeah, it was a lot, a lot of stories,
- 15:03Speaker 3: A lot of stories, big guys, A lot of stories.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I can't I can't tell you.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, what what is it like? I know you've probably
- 15:10Speaker 1: been asking so much, but what was it like winning
- 15:13Speaker 1: the Heisman over Peyton Manning? I mean, and two it's
- 15:16Speaker 1: like it's Peyton Manning. You know, quarterbacks who it was
- 15:19Speaker 1: also Ryan Lee, Randy Moss, but the quarterback Peyton Manning's
- 15:24Speaker 1: got the complexion for the protection and you end up
- 15:28Speaker 1: winning the Heisman like being a two way player. What
- 15:31Speaker 1: was that like when you won that?
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it was.
- 15:34Speaker 3: What's crazy is that we got three three first ballot
- 15:36Speaker 3: Hall of famers on there, Me, Peyton and Randy and
- 15:41Speaker 3: then at the time, you know, yeah, you got Ryan
- 15:44Speaker 3: Leaf there, who everybody thought, Man, he's gonna be the guy.
- 15:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Yeah, with him and Peyton coming out, a lot of
- 15:50Speaker 3: people had Ryan Leaf ahead of him. But the thing
- 15:55Speaker 3: about it is that, you know, I thought throughout the season,
- 15:59Speaker 3: I thought I'll played myself into a position where people
- 16:02Speaker 3: recognize who I was as a player, and I thought
- 16:06Speaker 3: I was the best player. But I didn't think I
- 16:07Speaker 3: was going to win the Heisman. Like there was no way,
- 16:11Speaker 3: you know, I was going to win the Heisman overpaid. Man,
- 16:13Speaker 3: It just wasn't It wasn't going to happen. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 3: the whole season coming in, I think he had came
- 16:18Speaker 3: back for his senior year a year, so you know,
- 16:22Speaker 3: that was that was really all of the talk. You know,
- 16:24Speaker 3: to finish business, you hate man, he came back for
- 16:27Speaker 3: you know, his senior year, Like, wow, what he's doing
- 16:29Speaker 3: for the university. He is coming back for his guys,
- 16:31Speaker 3: and he's coming back to win the Heisman Trophy. Like
- 16:35Speaker 3: that was a foregone conclusion. And so you know, season
- 16:38Speaker 3: carried on. And what was great is watching the thirty
- 16:41Speaker 3: for thirty that they just had came out and because
- 16:45Speaker 3: a lot of stuff you don't you don't remember, but
- 16:47Speaker 3: they had that that little ranking each week of who
- 16:51Speaker 3: was ahead, Like you had Peyton and then it was
- 16:56Speaker 3: ship there was a running back I saw maybe it
- 16:58Speaker 3: was Tavan Banks or something, the Tavan and then like
- 17:00Speaker 3: I was down here at the bottom, and then I
- 17:02Speaker 3: might move up, and then Peyton may move down, and
- 17:04Speaker 3: then this guy may move up. So it was really
- 17:06Speaker 3: interesting how it kind of played out throughout the year.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And then when Michigan State happened and the one hand
- 17:11Speaker 3: catch happened, then I kind of stayed steady in a
- 17:13Speaker 3: certain place, and then Penn State happened. Playing both ways
- 17:19Speaker 3: called a called a touchdown. Past that game, I'm playing
- 17:22Speaker 3: against Juror Vicious, and I remember they asked me before
- 17:26Speaker 3: that game, you know, did I think before or after
- 17:29Speaker 3: did I think I was the best player in the country.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, I'm the best player of the country,
- 17:33Speaker 3: but still not thinking they're gonna you know, I'm not winning.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Put you over.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yah, not gonna happen.
- 17:39Speaker 1: There's such a such a like a focused position driving numbers, like.
- 17:44Speaker 2: It's a numbers game.
- 17:45Speaker 3: It's a numbers game, you know, and so and then
- 17:47Speaker 3: how state happens and then here comes you know, the ceremony,
- 17:51Speaker 3: and it's like I'm there in New York to have
- 17:54Speaker 3: a good time hanging out with Randy, hanging out with
- 17:57Speaker 3: all the guys and just this is this is a
- 17:58Speaker 3: cool experience. And then you know Rudy, Rudy risk I
- 18:02Speaker 3: believe it was opens an envelope and it's like from Michigan.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Oh man, it was like my whole body just went limp.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And if you watch it, you see Randy on the side,
- 18:13Speaker 3: he's like get up.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So he nudged me. I'm like, damn, I just would.
- 18:19Speaker 1: What was the highest you got on the list, like
- 18:21Speaker 1: throughout the year to where maybe you had an inkling
- 18:24Speaker 1: like maybe there's a dot.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I think I think I got up.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I think I got up to one, I believe, And
- 18:31Speaker 3: but it kind of it just rotated, so it's one
- 18:33Speaker 3: and two, maybe three, then two than one. So it
- 18:36Speaker 3: was it was kind of cool, you know, to to
- 18:39Speaker 3: see some of the footage because, like I said, a
- 18:40Speaker 3: lot of that stuff, man, it's a long time ago
- 18:43Speaker 3: for me, but a lot of stuff you don't. You
- 18:45Speaker 3: don't remember interviews that you did, you know, certain things
- 18:48Speaker 3: other people said.
- 18:51Speaker 2: So yeah, man, it was cool to relive that.
- 18:53Speaker 4: People don't talk about this. But like, you win the heisman,
- 18:56Speaker 4: obviously it's such a surreal moment. Your blood's pumping, Like,
- 18:59Speaker 4: how stressful, nervous for your giving the speech, accepting.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Your I didn't have Yeah, I didn't have nothing. I
- 19:05Speaker 2: had nothing. Yeah, I had nothing.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Thank you family. Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Probably without the footage, you probably doesn't even remember, like.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Well, I remember, you know, getting up and of course,
- 19:20Speaker 2: you know, thanking my.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Mom and then and then I know I probably did
- 19:23Speaker 3: I made some reference to somebody else who I thought
- 19:25Speaker 3: should have won it but didn't win it, and then
- 19:28Speaker 3: finally they got it right or something something crazy like that.
- 19:32Speaker 2: But I didn't.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I didn't have a speech because I was like, like
- 19:35Speaker 3: I said, I'm here to just enjoy this moment and.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Write nothing down.
- 19:39Speaker 2: It is kind of it's.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Kind of a bad look. Not a bad look, but
- 19:42Speaker 4: when they pull out.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I don't like to do that.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Just as a general rule, I don't like to read
- 19:48Speaker 3: from anything. If I if I'm talking, I just like
- 19:50Speaker 3: to talk. But yeah, I went there, man, just.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Nothing, ma'am you When you think about like the colleg
- 20:00Speaker 4: football landscaping now on all the nil stuff, how would
- 20:05Speaker 4: you had to be going crazy, you'd have put you
- 20:07Speaker 4: would have been. I mean, you've been a seven figure cat.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I got, I got, I got one year left.
- 20:14Speaker 4: You trying to get out. I got one year the bench,
- 20:18Speaker 4: but I make seven figures plays.
- 20:20Speaker 1: How many players you think you give to a college
- 20:23Speaker 1: game in college right right now? If you play.
- 20:26Speaker 2: College, I'll run that ship right now.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So you don't think you'd be blowing a hand me
- 20:29Speaker 1: out there?
- 20:31Speaker 4: Hey listen, told you got a little as that beer.
- 20:36Speaker 1: A little bit, A little bit. I believe I.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Still run around a little bit. I still get after it. Yeah,
- 20:42Speaker 3: I give I give, I give him some work out
- 20:44Speaker 3: there straight up.
- 20:45Speaker 1: In college's playing corner.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I could play anything anything.
- 20:50Speaker 1: He'd be like uh, Travis Hunter, I'd be like him.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he truly plays both the ways.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I think that is like one hundred and thirty plus
- 20:59Speaker 3: plays again, like crazy, I tell people like I, I
- 21:02Speaker 3: like dibbled and dabbled on offense. I didn't play a
- 21:05Speaker 3: whole lot offense. It just seems like he plays of defense.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Like literally, that's crazy.
- 21:12Speaker 1: When you don't come off the field, right, Yeah, that's
- 21:15Speaker 1: where do you think he's better suited on offense or defense?
- 21:19Speaker 4: Oh?
- 21:19Speaker 2: Man, I think receiver. I think he's a nasty receiver.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 3: I mean he's a good corner'll get me wrong, but
- 21:25Speaker 3: I see it's his his offensive skills. Man, I think
- 21:27Speaker 3: it's offensive skills dominate over his defensive skills.
- 21:31Speaker 1: What's interesting too, is like your story back when you
- 21:34Speaker 1: were you know, with your mom and coach and like
- 21:37Speaker 1: not playing like situations like that. I feel like these days,
- 21:40Speaker 1: like you could just if you're upset, you could.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Just bounce et quick yea yeah, and not have any
- 21:45Speaker 3: any repercussions. Like it used to be where if you
- 21:48Speaker 3: went to another D one school you had to sit
- 21:50Speaker 3: out a whole year. And so now it's like what coach, Oh,
- 21:54Speaker 3: I don't worry, but I won't be here tomorrow. You
- 21:58Speaker 3: can just leave.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Do you think if.
- 21:59Speaker 4: You when you were a freshman ad mission that, like,
- 22:02Speaker 4: was there any time of time if there was an
- 22:05Speaker 4: opportunity to go on the transferport that you might mind.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Well, at that time we talked about with Coach car
- 22:09Speaker 3: So when I went back to my dorm room, it
- 22:11Speaker 3: was funny because we had a couple of guys who
- 22:13Speaker 3: visited the University of Miami.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Were you in West Quad?
- 22:16Speaker 2: I was in I was in West Squad.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yeah, And and so after practice, a couple of guys,
- 22:22Speaker 3: my boys, Man, what happened?
- 22:23Speaker 2: I was like, Man, I don't know, man, coach tripping. Man,
- 22:25Speaker 2: I said, Man, I'm out of here. Man.
- 22:28Speaker 3: It was like what I said, Man, fuck this, Man,
- 22:30Speaker 3: I'm going to Miami. Man, I'm transferred out here. I
- 22:32Speaker 3: don't want to be here. Man, were going too, we Man,
- 22:36Speaker 3: let's do it serious. So we had like a little
- 22:38Speaker 3: mutiny going on for like twenty four hours. Yeah, a
- 22:42Speaker 3: little bit like Man, I'm leaving. But uh, but I
- 22:49Speaker 3: think that's probably how it happens, you know, with a
- 22:51Speaker 3: lot of guys. You know, you have an altercation with
- 22:54Speaker 3: a coach and you go back to the room and
- 22:56Speaker 3: there's nobody to talk. You down from that ledge and
- 22:58Speaker 3: you're like, shum out, I don't I don't got to
- 23:00Speaker 3: deal with this. And nowadays it's easier than ever to
- 23:03Speaker 3: say I don't want to deal with it.
- 23:04Speaker 4: It makes it so much more difficult to keep accountability
- 23:07Speaker 4: in a locker room that's so important in football together.
- 23:10Speaker 3: And that's what that's what hard, what what Michigan did
- 23:12Speaker 3: with and and the reason why I feel like they
- 23:15Speaker 3: want and we're so dominant is because they really had
- 23:18Speaker 3: grown men out there.
- 23:19Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 23:20Speaker 3: We got a bunch of you know, junior seniors guys
- 23:22Speaker 3: who came back. And so if you look at what
- 23:25Speaker 3: you know, how a state is doing right now, they're
- 23:27Speaker 3: they're trying to you know, buy all these players, trying
- 23:28Speaker 3: to get all this this this quick fix. It's hard
- 23:31Speaker 3: to it's hard to build it that way, you know
- 23:34Speaker 3: what I'm saying. If you if you're trying to do
- 23:35Speaker 3: that every year, like you got to have you know,
- 23:37Speaker 3: kind of a nucleus of guys that are coming back
- 23:40Speaker 3: and you can build a program with. So it's gonna
- 23:43Speaker 3: get harder and harder, and you know for coaches to
- 23:45Speaker 3: kind of maintain that because there used to.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Be truly like a loyalty to school.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Now it's just a loyalty to you and what you
- 23:56Speaker 3: can get, you know, trying to get the.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Most out of it for yourself. So so it's gonna
- 23:59Speaker 2: be hard for coaches.
- 24:00Speaker 4: That's an interesting thing, is like having loyalty to yourself
- 24:04Speaker 4: and your school even when you play. When we play
- 24:06Speaker 4: like that was still there, like you still wanted to
- 24:08Speaker 4: benefit yourself playing well and the team doing well is
- 24:11Speaker 4: you know at the same time. But now it's like
- 24:14Speaker 4: it's wild west. And with Ohio State the way they're
- 24:17Speaker 4: setting up this year, they're spending so much money in
- 24:19Speaker 4: an IL and bringing these guys in there. If they
- 24:22Speaker 4: don't essentially if they don't win the national championship, it's
- 24:25Speaker 4: it's right.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, So that's that's the That's definitely the type of
- 24:29Speaker 3: pressure that you put on yourself. If you say, all right,
- 24:31Speaker 3: I got the best guy out from here, the best
- 24:33Speaker 3: guy from here, best guy from here, and then you
- 24:35Speaker 3: get them all together and it doesn't work. It's like,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, people start looking at you real crazy, yeah,
- 24:43Speaker 3: and you like, go ahead.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I was just gonna know if you got more in college,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I was going to start to dabble in the NFL world, but.
- 24:49Speaker 4: A couple more things on college just this year. Sean
- 24:51Speaker 4: More obviously, like I'm a massive Sean More fan. I
- 24:54Speaker 4: think he deserved that job. They made the right Yeah
- 24:57Speaker 4: he is. He's the dude for for the university should
- 25:00Speaker 4: he lost a lot of players, like eighteen dudes gonna
- 25:02Speaker 4: get drafted, and then coaching staff and lost the DC
- 25:05Speaker 4: lost the string coach, which I think is like the
- 25:07Speaker 4: most devastating loss. Like herb with the opportunity to go
- 25:09Speaker 4: there and meet and talk at him, he was.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Kind of going starting the conditioning, Oh man, it's my guy. Man.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Yeah, evaluates hips, knees, everything in the grading scale they
- 25:19Speaker 4: put everybody on. Like you walk away from that being like, damn,
- 25:22Speaker 4: I wish he was. Yeah, I was playing because it
- 25:24Speaker 4: was like a guy like this is a dude you
- 25:26Speaker 4: have for all of college and then in the off
- 25:28Speaker 4: season you're backing in arbor.
- 25:30Speaker 1: What.
- 25:31Speaker 3: I took my son up to a little two day
- 25:33Speaker 3: camp they had up there, and he just had a
- 25:35Speaker 3: you know, certain easy way that that he does pull ups.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Ship. I went back home and I was doing him
- 25:39Speaker 2: that way. You know what I'm saying, that's the kind
- 25:40Speaker 2: of guy he was. Man.
- 25:41Speaker 4: So, yeah, what's like like like most reasonable expectation for
- 25:48Speaker 4: the University of Michigan in twenty twenty four season.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be tough. You know, looking at
- 25:55Speaker 3: the schedule I was looking at the other day. We
- 25:57Speaker 3: got Texas coming in the second game.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Schedule to the USC right l A State, Ohio State,
- 26:04Speaker 4: Oregon tail.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and and you know, you just look at the Texas.
- 26:08Speaker 3: They have their guy, their quarterbacks coming back, you know
- 26:11Speaker 3: what I mean. So they have you know, what we
- 26:13Speaker 3: have is a lot of guys leaving. Our quarterback leaves.
- 26:16Speaker 3: You got a Texas team that just was in the
- 26:18Speaker 3: playoffs as well, they're still building building on that and
- 26:21Speaker 3: still have a lot of things in place. And then
- 26:22Speaker 3: they got their quarterback coming back. So I think it'll
- 26:26Speaker 3: it'll be it'll be tough sledding for him, just because
- 26:28Speaker 3: he's really rebuilding it. Like you said, there's nothing I
- 26:31Speaker 3: don't think anything hurts some more than losing staff, losing
- 26:36Speaker 3: guys that were in there in place, you know, losing
- 26:38Speaker 3: uh being strength and conditioning coach, You lose your defensive.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Coordinator, you know, he's gone. Uh. A few other guys
- 26:46Speaker 2: have have left as well.
- 26:48Speaker 3: I think Jim's uh is it jim Son that's on
- 26:52Speaker 3: the on the staff that he just left.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I don't know you would assume taking a couple offensive guys.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Yeah, so a lot of guys left, man, So I
- 27:01Speaker 3: don't know it'd be it'll be interesting, but it's gonna
- 27:04Speaker 3: be a it's gonna be a tough slip to slip.
- 27:06Speaker 4: The uh and Arbor best place to go eat college kid.
- 27:10Speaker 4: I got the place in my head right now, but
- 27:11Speaker 4: I don't want to start.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Well, I mean, n I l.
- 27:14Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, no no. We're talking those little chips,
- 27:18Speaker 4: like those little coupons.
- 27:19Speaker 3: That I like to well for me, for me, it
- 27:21Speaker 3: was cottage in cottage and did hit Yeah cottage.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think we.
- 27:25Speaker 4: It's a little pizza spot. Did you guys get the
- 27:27Speaker 4: little pieces of paper the chips?
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah? Fifteen bucks on ours?
- 27:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 27:31Speaker 4: See ours? Was you got like two medium pizzas and
- 27:33Speaker 4: like a soda or something like that. You go smack
- 27:35Speaker 4: one of those things, barbarcue. It was nice. We are
- 27:39Speaker 4: this podcast is mister spots.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Mister spots. Yeah, like mister Spots. But me, but me,
- 27:44Speaker 3: I was I was. It was pizza for me, man. Yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 3: and cottage In they had they had the they had
- 27:49Speaker 3: the best pizza. And I always felt like cottage In
- 27:53Speaker 3: was out of all the places that we could get. So,
- 27:57Speaker 3: you know, he had mister spots, you had Cottage In,
- 28:00Speaker 3: and we only had like four different places you can
- 28:02Speaker 3: go from. Like that one to me was like the most,
- 28:04Speaker 3: Like I felt like I was really doing something if
- 28:06Speaker 3: I went into college Cottagein and.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Got something, you know what I'm saying. The restaurant. Yeah, yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 2: it was like, yeah, you.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Know, I felt like I was doing something, you know
- 28:14Speaker 3: what I mean? So Cottage In was that deal.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Last last college go to the NFL Top five players
- 28:20Speaker 4: University of Michigan history, but not like obviously, like the
- 28:26Speaker 4: argument here would be Tom Brady. Would Tom Brady be
- 28:27Speaker 4: a top five Michigan football player?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Not a Michigan right right, right right?
- 28:33Speaker 4: But you have one, so you don't have to do
- 28:35Speaker 4: it yourself.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Got to put myself in there? Yeah, well we could.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I put myself in. Can I put myself in an
- 28:40Speaker 3: offense and defense and I can be.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Like that? Oh man, that's that's pretty tough. I'm gonna say. Uh.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Desmond i'd have to go Anthony Carter. Mmmm, that's tough.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Let's get my man hutch in there, Steve Hutchison.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Mm hmmm, that sneaky with one maybe Jake Long.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Okay, so I got two receivers in right now, because
- 29:34Speaker 3: I've already smoked with that mold and I got to
- 29:35Speaker 3: Oh so that would be two offensive tackles, no.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Choice in the guard.
- 29:40Speaker 4: But also Blake Horn.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, because you.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Got some recent guys in there, Let's put Blake in there.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Let's put Blake in there for what he did, uh
- 29:52Speaker 3: these last couple of seasons. And he's rocking the deuce
- 29:55Speaker 3: out there too. Let's do that. So that's that's fine, right,
- 29:58Speaker 3: that's fine, Okay, tough question.
- 30:00Speaker 1: It was helped me out. Was Blake's stats overall better
- 30:05Speaker 1: than heart?
- 30:06Speaker 2: Oh?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Yes, I just remember that.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Touchdown wise for sure, I think because he got a
- 30:12Speaker 3: bunch of touchdowns.
- 30:14Speaker 4: By any Michigan players.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and he.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Like I think he blew it up. I don't think
- 30:18Speaker 4: he blew it out. I think he be about one
- 30:19Speaker 4: or two.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Yeah, but did.
- 30:20Speaker 4: It with only like three years starting as opposed to
- 30:23Speaker 4: that Anthony Thomas, Yeah, he was at like fifty five
- 30:28Speaker 4: four year starter and he got like fifty seven.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Six Mike did.
- 30:35Speaker 4: It was real?
- 30:39Speaker 2: What the what the core?
- 30:41Speaker 1: All?
- 30:48Speaker 2: Right? Yeah?
- 30:48Speaker 3: But the thing is, even even though you have the
- 30:52Speaker 3: all the yards and stuff, it's still about impact too. Yeah,
- 30:55Speaker 3: Like his impact on the team is one of those
- 30:57Speaker 3: things that you know, it might not be top five
- 31:00Speaker 3: and Russian or whatever, but his impact on coming back,
- 31:04Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. And then his impact just
- 31:06Speaker 3: just his presence on the field.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Man, So like my man, Yeah, yeah, I.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Don't even I mean, you had such an incredible NFL
- 31:14Speaker 1: career as well, it's kind of like hard to focus
- 31:16Speaker 1: on something or start somewhere, but I am curious, Like
- 31:20Speaker 1: you're one of the greatest Raiders of all time, and
- 31:22Speaker 1: then you had that stint in Green Bay where you
- 31:24Speaker 1: played a lot of good ball, and then you come
- 31:25Speaker 1: back to Oakland like when you were in a hit
- 31:28Speaker 1: free agency, like you were somebody who were friend you
- 31:30Speaker 1: were franchise tagged, right yep, So like was there when
- 31:34Speaker 1: you left Oakland the first time? Was there like bitterness
- 31:37Speaker 1: with the organization when going to Green Bay, like because
- 31:40Speaker 1: you obviously came back around to Oakland, but being such
- 31:42Speaker 1: a great player for them, when they kind of like
- 31:44Speaker 1: let you go elsewhere. Was there like any resentment? Was
- 31:47Speaker 1: there any bitterness of the business per se?
- 31:52Speaker 3: Yeah, kind of because I never thought that I would
- 31:56Speaker 3: leave Oakland, And the bitterness was more so with you know,
- 32:02Speaker 3: like the GM at the time, so not necessarily just Raiders.
- 32:05Speaker 3: It was just the GM, you know, And I think
- 32:07Speaker 3: at that time, you know, you know, they you know,
- 32:11Speaker 3: told my agents or something something that there was you know,
- 32:14Speaker 3: no value to bringing me back to the Raiders, and
- 32:16Speaker 3: that was coming from from that side, and so it
- 32:19Speaker 3: was like, you know what I'm saying, what are you
- 32:22Speaker 3: talking about? So, yeah, it was it was a little
- 32:25Speaker 3: bit bitterness in that regard. But I was also like
- 32:30Speaker 3: I said, I didn't think I would leave there. But
- 32:32Speaker 3: then it was I've got franchise tagged, so I was free,
- 32:36Speaker 3: so I could go anywhere. So I thought that, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 3: I was going to have my my picket or litter
- 32:41Speaker 3: you know, anywhere I wanted to go, you know, I
- 32:44Speaker 3: was going to be able to go. And it, man,
- 32:46Speaker 3: it was it was dry as this a heara out there,
- 32:49Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Yeah, it was.
- 32:52Speaker 2: It was kind of crazy.
- 32:53Speaker 3: And so you know, I went in thinking one thing,
- 32:55Speaker 3: and then my experience wasn't all that great, you know.
- 32:58Speaker 3: And so through the process, green Bay began to call
- 33:04Speaker 3: my agents and and you know, wanted to bring me in,
- 33:08Speaker 3: and you know, I was reluctant. I was like, nah,
- 33:10Speaker 3: you know, I'm not going to Green Bay. So there
- 33:11Speaker 3: was no really no really no reason for me to
- 33:13Speaker 3: visit there and so called again. And when everything was
- 33:18Speaker 3: really like quiet from from everyone else, you know, I
- 33:21Speaker 3: had my agent reaching out to other people and nobody
- 33:24Speaker 3: was biting. So I was like, all right, well, let
- 33:26Speaker 3: me go to Green Bay because we got to at
- 33:28Speaker 3: least try to draw some interest from I'll go there.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Maybe somebody else will be like, all right, well some
- 33:33Speaker 3: other people are checking form.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Man. It was it was crazy, yo. But if green
- 33:39Speaker 2: Bay didn't want me, I don't.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I really don't know where where I would have played
- 33:43Speaker 3: in two thousand and six.
- 33:45Speaker 2: It really, yeah, really.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Why do you think it was so dry? Like the
- 33:48Speaker 4: free agency market?
- 33:49Speaker 3: There were you know, just there was a lot of
- 33:51Speaker 3: a lot of things out there. One I had I
- 33:53Speaker 3: did come off an injury. I broke my leg in
- 33:56Speaker 3: two thousand and five, so I missed the final ten
- 33:58Speaker 3: games of the season and then people talked about my
- 34:03Speaker 3: attitude and talked about you know, just a lot of
- 34:06Speaker 3: different different things and so, and I think some of
- 34:10Speaker 3: that came from the raider side as well, just you know,
- 34:12Speaker 3: putting some stuff.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Out there conversation, you know, right right, right right.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Because because Mike McCarthy asked when I first met with Mike,
- 34:22Speaker 3: because it was his first I think it was his
- 34:24Speaker 3: first year, was my first year, he asked me about
- 34:26Speaker 3: it in our meeting. He was like, oh, what is
- 34:27Speaker 3: this about you, you know, being a bad bad team guy,
- 34:30Speaker 3: bad locker room guy. And I was like, what, Like, man,
- 34:34Speaker 3: you can't talk to any players I played with that's
- 34:36Speaker 3: say I'm a I'm a bad locker room guy. So
- 34:38Speaker 3: I don't know where that's coming from. So there was
- 34:40Speaker 3: some things being you know put out there. Uh that
- 34:43Speaker 3: muddy the water and so yeah, it was just it
- 34:46Speaker 3: was a it was a little tough, tough period man
- 34:49Speaker 3: to kind of go through as a.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Guy who I had done everything, you know.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so I'm like, damn, that's how they that's
- 34:56Speaker 3: how they really feel.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Yeah, did you did you have any more moments that
- 35:00Speaker 1: you felt like they were defining you by that you
- 35:03Speaker 1: might have had lower moments while being on the Raiders
- 35:05Speaker 1: that allowed them to say, what's this about you being
- 35:07Speaker 1: a bad team guy?
- 35:09Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, I mean I had some asshole in me.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I ain't gonna say that.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Yeah, but but in terms of you know, player and
- 35:17Speaker 3: you know, uh, guys in the locker room.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Nah, it wouldn't have it wouldn't have been from that.
- 35:26Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean I had my I have my
- 35:29Speaker 3: my issues with coaches at times. You know, I like
- 35:34Speaker 3: to hang out, do my thing, you know what I'm saying,
- 35:36Speaker 3: outside of playing football. So you know, maybe that could
- 35:39Speaker 3: have had something to do with it. Who knows, But
- 35:42Speaker 3: in terms of being able to play the game, and
- 35:45Speaker 3: you know.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Just overall, you know, good dude, a good dude, you
- 35:48Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Can you speak to like your development in the the
- 35:53Speaker 1: film room because obviously, like you're a guy, you were,
- 35:55Speaker 1: you were an All American coming out, Heisman Trophy winner,
- 35:58Speaker 1: top five pick, like you have all the accolades, right,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like it's like, oh, he's the most He's just so talented.
- 36:03Speaker 1: He's super talented. But I'm also fortunate enough to play
- 36:05Speaker 1: with Will Blackman for a couple of years. And when
- 36:07Speaker 1: Will and I we'd have our sushi knights and stuff,
- 36:11Speaker 1: but he would talk about you as somebody who's always
- 36:13Speaker 1: like a last in the building, and he would learn
- 36:15Speaker 1: a lot of his study habits from you. You feel
- 36:18Speaker 1: like you had those throughout your entire career. You developed
- 36:21Speaker 1: him as you got older, because he always said the
- 36:24Speaker 1: best things about you. I feel like something like that,
- 36:26Speaker 1: like being a student of the game, kind of gets
- 36:28Speaker 1: slept on when you're somebody who has all the accolades.
- 36:30Speaker 2: In the world.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it compounds over time because you do
- 36:34Speaker 3: start out, you know, like myself, I was a great athlete,
- 36:38Speaker 3: so a lot of stuff's going to come easy, you know,
- 36:40Speaker 3: so you don't necessarily have to spend as much time
- 36:43Speaker 3: looking at certain things.
- 36:44Speaker 2: But the one thing that.
- 36:45Speaker 3: I've always had as a player was I've had great
- 36:49Speaker 3: play recall, you know what I mean. So when you're
- 36:52Speaker 3: out there on the field and you see certain things,
- 36:54Speaker 3: you start to pick up on tendencies like I always
- 36:57Speaker 3: had that without necessarily having to look at film. And
- 37:01Speaker 3: so then you know, as your career goes on, you
- 37:03Speaker 3: take different different methods from different coaches like Vance Befford,
- 37:09Speaker 3: Like I remember, you know, just going back to a
- 37:12Speaker 3: certain play. We played Northwestern my junior year and it
- 37:16Speaker 3: was a third and long situation and me and him
- 37:18Speaker 3: had went over what they liked to do in that
- 37:20Speaker 3: situation and they ran out and I picked that out off.
- 37:23Speaker 3: So different things you pick up from different coaches. Chuck
- 37:25Speaker 3: Burgano was another guy who worked on me on third
- 37:29Speaker 3: down as well, you know, being around him, I learned
- 37:31Speaker 3: a lot on third down tendencies, you know that being
- 37:34Speaker 3: money down and so over time then you start developing
- 37:39Speaker 3: your own style of how you like to see things.
- 37:42Speaker 3: And so for me, like I said, I always had,
- 37:45Speaker 3: you know, good play. Recall what I would start to
- 37:48Speaker 3: do in my studies. I would start to watch the
- 37:51Speaker 3: game from the opposing team's one yard line all the
- 37:55Speaker 3: way to the one yard line, but then the same personnel.
- 37:59Speaker 3: So I wanted to see from the one to the one,
- 38:01Speaker 3: same person I want to see it in all parts
- 38:03Speaker 3: of the field because you'll run certain things from first
- 38:06Speaker 3: to five, first to ten, ten to twenty twenty to
- 38:08Speaker 3: forty forty to twenty twenty two. You know what I'm saying,
- 38:11Speaker 3: And a lot of it mirrors what you do from
- 38:14Speaker 3: here to here, you know what I mean. So, like
- 38:17Speaker 3: you take a wheel for example. You know, I would
- 38:20Speaker 3: have my film broken up certain ways, and then I
- 38:23Speaker 3: would tell those guys, this is how I like to
- 38:24Speaker 3: look at the film. And so we would, you know,
- 38:27Speaker 3: when we'd have our times together in our film room,
- 38:28Speaker 3: we would look at the film and then we start
- 38:31Speaker 3: going over these things. When and when I would see
- 38:33Speaker 3: something that would kind of they may get to it
- 38:36Speaker 3: a different way, but it's the same thing. Would I
- 38:39Speaker 3: would go back to it, all right, Now watch this.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Watch how this team lines up on this plane runs it.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Now watch them motion to it and run it. But
- 38:46Speaker 3: it's the same thing, you know. So I was always
- 38:48Speaker 3: taught it's not how you line up, it's how you
- 38:51Speaker 3: wind up. So those are the things that I was
- 38:54Speaker 3: able to, you know, pass along to those guys. And
- 38:56Speaker 3: for me, it's just over time, it was I got
- 39:00Speaker 3: gradually even better at it.
- 39:02Speaker 1: You know, you found like another way to prepare them
- 39:04Speaker 1: be like, okay, added to your game and that that
- 39:06Speaker 1: fires me up as a defensive guy. That's that's that's
- 39:09Speaker 1: football porn right there.
- 39:10Speaker 4: It seems like you had a good way of simplifying
- 39:12Speaker 4: things exactly, emotions and stuff like that. This is the
- 39:14Speaker 4: same thing just a little extra dressing on it, like
- 39:16Speaker 4: to go back to like the you know, tough locker
- 39:20Speaker 4: room guy, or these being put into a box of
- 39:22Speaker 4: a category of your character. For Charles Woodson, how when
- 39:27Speaker 4: you're hearing these things from different coaches from different gms,
- 39:30Speaker 4: like how did you? Was that like motivation for you?
- 39:32Speaker 4: Like I'll prove you wrong and this is why? Or
- 39:35Speaker 4: how do you handle those types of things when someone
- 39:37Speaker 4: might be putting you in a corner and saying you're
- 39:39Speaker 4: like this, when you truly don't feel you're like that.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Actually I was kind of I was hurt, man, you
- 39:43Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. Yeah, that kind of hurt, you
- 39:45Speaker 3: know because I never, throughout my whole life, had never
- 39:49Speaker 3: been in a position where.
- 39:52Speaker 2: People doubted me.
- 39:53Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, that never, And so that
- 39:56Speaker 3: was that was a period where it was like there
- 39:58Speaker 3: was there was some doubt cast over me as a as
- 40:00Speaker 3: a as a football player.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Now you may not like me.
- 40:04Speaker 3: As a person or whatever that is, but like on
- 40:07Speaker 3: the football field, like to have somebody say, man, he
- 40:10Speaker 3: can't do that anymore. He's always heard he's injury prone,
- 40:12Speaker 3: he's that, and that's like damn, like that that kind
- 40:16Speaker 3: of that kind of broke me down a little bit.
- 40:19Speaker 3: And so when I when I first got to Green Bay,
- 40:22Speaker 3: you know, there was just a period in there where
- 40:24Speaker 3: I was like, damn, I don't I don't even want
- 40:27Speaker 3: to play football anymore, you know what I'm saying. So
- 40:30Speaker 3: at Green Bay, Yeah, when I when I first got
- 40:32Speaker 3: there and I first signed, you know, I called a
- 40:36Speaker 3: few people who are close to me and I was like, yeah,
- 40:38Speaker 3: I think I'm I think I'm gonna hang it up.
- 40:40Speaker 3: And and it was my uh my agent at the time,
- 40:46Speaker 3: Kevin Posting. He uh he said, hey, man, he said,
- 40:50Speaker 3: you signed the contract, right. I was like, yeah, I
- 40:52Speaker 3: signed the contract. He was like, well, that's like giving
- 40:55Speaker 3: your word. And I was like yeah. He was like,
- 40:58Speaker 3: you at least at least need to play one at
- 41:00Speaker 3: least play one year. You know what I'm saying, Because
- 41:02Speaker 3: you've signed the contract, you gave me your word at
- 41:04Speaker 3: least need to play one year.
- 41:06Speaker 2: And so I was like, yeah, you know what, that
- 41:08Speaker 2: makes sense. That makes sense.
- 41:09Speaker 3: So, you know, I got through that little period and
- 41:13Speaker 3: then you know, things just kind of just started to
- 41:15Speaker 3: take off and slow down in Green Bay where I
- 41:17Speaker 3: was like, all right, I'm back.
- 41:19Speaker 1: You guys had a good team too. It looked fun,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like everybody talked about your schematics defensively.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Why am I forget his name?
- 41:27Speaker 1: Coordinator?
- 41:28Speaker 3: Well, that was later you're talking about Dom Capers. Okay,
- 41:30Speaker 3: that was later on when I first got there was
- 41:32Speaker 3: another guy. But we but in terms of having fun,
- 41:35Speaker 3: we had we had a great group, especially secondary wise,
- 41:39Speaker 3: Al Harris, Nick Collins, Tremion Williams had just come in
- 41:46Speaker 3: some young some other young guys are tarry big beats,
- 41:48Speaker 3: so like our secondary, you know, then young will comes in.
- 41:53Speaker 3: We had just some young, good guys on that secondary
- 41:56Speaker 3: man and uh, it was great because you know when
- 41:59Speaker 3: you talk about I had some young guys that kind
- 42:01Speaker 3: of looked up to me, and so you know, kind
- 42:04Speaker 3: of watching what I did, and you talk about the
- 42:06Speaker 3: film study and all of those sorts of things. So
- 42:09Speaker 3: then it really became fun because because then it was
- 42:11Speaker 3: almost like a responsibility. How am I going to get
- 42:14Speaker 3: to help these guys, you know, get to the next level.
- 42:17Speaker 3: And it was really about going out there and showing
- 42:19Speaker 3: them for the most part.
- 42:20Speaker 2: But then just those little things.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Like you know, finding your own way to watch the
- 42:25Speaker 3: film that makes it easier for you, right, and then
- 42:29Speaker 3: you grow from there?
- 42:29Speaker 4: When did you find that transition of like when you
- 42:32Speaker 4: first set in the league and you get in a
- 42:33Speaker 4: locker with a bunch of NFL players, you're like, oh shit,
- 42:35Speaker 4: that's the so and so. Oh that's this guy. And
- 42:37Speaker 4: then eventually it flips where people are and they're a
- 42:40Speaker 4: fan of you now yea, yeah, yeah, now you're Yeah,
- 42:42Speaker 4: you're young. You're the dude that people are like, yo,
- 42:44Speaker 4: let me watch film with you? And like where where
- 42:46Speaker 4: do you think that switch turned for you in your
- 42:49Speaker 4: NFL career? Was like, Okay, I'm now the guy that's
- 42:51Speaker 4: supposed to be leading, not following, if following for lack
- 42:54Speaker 4: of a better work, because youre always gonna do you
- 42:56Speaker 4: when you're young, it's just like you're looking up to
- 42:58Speaker 4: these guys. Now guys you're looking up to you.
- 43:00Speaker 3: It was it probably started around six years in because
- 43:04Speaker 3: that's when. Because so when I first came in, like
- 43:09Speaker 3: Tim Brown, Tim Brown's in the locker room, you know
- 43:11Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Yeah, Napoleon Kaufman who watched in college
- 43:14Speaker 3: and then he was with the Raiders.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Who else do we have?
- 43:19Speaker 4: Man?
- 43:21Speaker 2: Dude? I just saw him too. Uh, I think of
- 43:26Speaker 2: it a minute, but in a minute, but.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Russell Maryland, uh, Pat Swilling, it was it was crazy,
- 43:36Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, because because when you're when
- 43:37Speaker 3: you're young, you don't you don't think you'll catch those
- 43:39Speaker 3: guys because it seems like it seems like as far away.
- 43:42Speaker 3: And then Jerry Rice came in, like, holy sh these
- 43:46Speaker 3: dudes are in the same locker room, you know. And
- 43:48Speaker 3: so then around six years in then those guys are gone.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Tim's gone, uh, Jerry's uh, He's gone. Now, so now
- 43:59Speaker 3: those those older guys are kind of peeling off, and
- 44:03Speaker 3: so now you're starting to be one of the older guys.
- 44:05Speaker 3: And so then it kind of becomes oh, man, you know,
- 44:08Speaker 3: I used to watch you. Then as you get older,
- 44:11Speaker 3: you get the green Bay. Oh man, yea, I used
- 44:13Speaker 3: to watch you. And then all of a sudden, your
- 44:15Speaker 3: grandpa he's like, damn.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Rookie comes in there, like ya, I used to watch
- 44:22Speaker 4: you in high school. Yeah, yeah, high school really have
- 44:26Speaker 4: been for a while.
- 44:28Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Who are some of the best leaders you've been around?
- 44:31Speaker 1: And maybe they weren't the biggest names either, but who
- 44:33Speaker 1: are some of the best leaders that you've been around.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Like Tim Brown was a great leader. I thought that.
- 44:46Speaker 3: One of my favorite guys who was who was with
- 44:48Speaker 3: the Raiders when I first got there was Eric Turner,
- 44:52Speaker 3: you know who who passed away maybe like my maybe
- 44:57Speaker 3: like second second or third year and NFL Eric Allen,
- 45:02Speaker 3: you know, tremendous guys like I feel like when I came.
- 45:05Speaker 2: In, we had we had like real real veterans of
- 45:10Speaker 2: the game. You know what I'm saying.
- 45:12Speaker 3: You know guys who you know had been through a
- 45:15Speaker 3: lot and just you know, they they respected the game,
- 45:19Speaker 3: you know what I mean? Yeah, I have respect for
- 45:21Speaker 3: the people who came before them, Like I played with
- 45:24Speaker 3: those kind of guys man, And so I would say,
- 45:26Speaker 3: those are the guys who you know come off at
- 45:28Speaker 3: the top off the top of my mind.
- 45:30Speaker 2: When I first got in, you had you had two boys, right,
- 45:34Speaker 2: I got too boys? Yeah?
- 45:34Speaker 4: Two boys? How has it been with them starting to
- 45:38Speaker 4: play sports? And you kind of like, hey, the expectation
- 45:43Speaker 4: is not to win a Heisman and the Defensive Player
- 45:45Speaker 4: of the year, first round pick, Like how do you
- 45:46Speaker 4: temper those expectations when your kids are looking up to
- 45:49Speaker 4: you as a father? I want to be like you
- 45:51Speaker 4: and succeed you. Essentially.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny because I have the conversation with him,
- 45:57Speaker 3: and it's funny because there's two different responses. So, you know,
- 46:01Speaker 3: I can tell my my oldest you know, hey man,
- 46:03Speaker 3: you know, look, you got all the talent in the world.
- 46:07Speaker 3: You know, you'll be compared. We got the same name,
- 46:10Speaker 3: you know, but you can't worry about that. You know,
- 46:12Speaker 3: you just got to go do your thing. Whatever's gonna
- 46:14Speaker 3: happen is gonna happen. It's like, okay, yeah, that appreciate it.
- 46:17Speaker 3: I tell my youngest son, hey man, you know, you
- 46:19Speaker 3: don't gotta you don't got to be this or that
- 46:22Speaker 3: that I'm gonna be.
- 46:22Speaker 2: In the Hall of Fame with you. So I'm like, cool,
- 46:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. You gotta speak at first,
- 46:31Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 46:32Speaker 4: So are you like, hey, you guys have to go
- 46:33Speaker 4: to Michigan.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Uh kind of unofficially Yeah.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yeah, if if they're highly recruited.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Man, well, I you know I do. I do tell
- 46:45Speaker 2: those guys.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Man, listen, I want you to be able to make
- 46:48Speaker 3: your own decision wherever you you know, when it comes
- 46:51Speaker 3: to that point. But there's just one place you can't go,
- 46:56Speaker 3: you know, what I'm saying, come on.
- 46:58Speaker 4: Can't go hypothetic. Cool for whatever reason, your kids are
- 47:02Speaker 4: playing they're playing ball. They're getting offers, but they're like
- 47:04Speaker 4: small D one offers. You're getting some Max, you're getting
- 47:07Speaker 4: some some app state type of ones. But there was
- 47:10Speaker 4: one big team that comes in and happens.
- 47:13Speaker 2: To be But here's my question, though, why would you
- 47:19Speaker 2: ask that question?
- 47:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the Ohio States are taking a shot.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, full right.
- 47:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we're talking about a in I ling ground.
- 47:38Speaker 2: But hey, in I l full right, nobody else is calling.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Might have to think about it.
- 47:43Speaker 1: That would be so tough.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Walk in the stadium is so tough for.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Him wearing red.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna watch from the blimp.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to watch from home.
- 47:58Speaker 1: That's funny. Ask a good question. That'd be hard. Were
- 48:02Speaker 1: you in Green Bay with Favan Rogers?
- 48:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I first got there. FARV was there?
- 48:06Speaker 1: What was that drama? Like, you know, everybody got to
- 48:09Speaker 1: see you know, far retires, he comes back. You know
- 48:11Speaker 1: they never you know, they wouldn't see eyed eye. There's
- 48:14Speaker 1: obviously been a lot of public conversation and and like
- 48:17Speaker 1: transparency or subjective opinion around it. Like what was it
- 48:20Speaker 1: like or like being kind of like in that drama
- 48:23Speaker 1: or around it.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Well, I think for I think the guys on the
- 48:27Speaker 3: defensive side, we didn't really pay attention to it because
- 48:30Speaker 3: it's more, you know, he's in the you know, Bretton
- 48:34Speaker 3: and a Ride, They're in the meetings together all the time.
- 48:37Speaker 3: They're always on the offensive side. So we really didn't
- 48:39Speaker 3: we really didn't get into that portion of it. The
- 48:43Speaker 3: most interaction, like for myself with a Ride is a
- 48:47Speaker 3: Ride was on the practice squad, and so he would
- 48:49Speaker 3: always go against our defense. So that was really all
- 48:53Speaker 3: I really paid attention to. Was that part of it. Now,
- 48:58Speaker 3: I remember that, you know that Wash talks of you know,
- 49:02Speaker 3: Brett saying he doesn't really need to help, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 3: the guy that they just drafted basically to replace him.
- 49:09Speaker 3: But I never really laid eyes on like visible tension
- 49:13Speaker 3: between them because I wasn't paying attention to.
- 49:16Speaker 2: It, you know what I mean.
- 49:17Speaker 3: So, yeah, it wasn't It wasn't anything that I really
- 49:23Speaker 3: could comment on because I was I wasn't in the
- 49:25Speaker 3: middle of I didn't care, to.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Be honest, that's fair.
- 49:29Speaker 3: I mean, I'm trying to I'm trying to win the
- 49:31Speaker 3: super Bowl, and and usually it's a coach.
- 49:33Speaker 1: It's like, hey, we got a pretty good one over
- 49:34Speaker 1: here in twelve and you're just thinking like, yeah, he
- 49:36Speaker 1: does a good job practical, but we should be there
- 49:38Speaker 1: picking this ball off right now.
- 49:39Speaker 2: And and we knew it, man, we knew it right away.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Like when when Brett was kind of enter out, you know,
- 49:44Speaker 3: coming back or not coming back, and we would play
- 49:46Speaker 3: we would play, you know, against a Rod uh in
- 49:49Speaker 3: those practices, and it was like, oh, yeah, when when
- 49:55Speaker 3: Brett Lee's we're gonna we're gonna be We're gonna be.
- 50:00Speaker 4: Spoiled quarterback Francis.
- 50:02Speaker 3: Yeah, Rogers found found another one that looks.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Like, yeah, as you transitioned out of football, like how
- 50:08Speaker 4: difficult was it for you to like did you feel
- 50:12Speaker 4: completely fulfilled throughout your NFL career or was there a
- 50:15Speaker 4: point when you first left where you're like you're lacking
- 50:17Speaker 4: fulfillment the competitive nature that first ball, not playing ball,
- 50:20Speaker 4: Like how did you handle that?
- 50:22Speaker 2: No? Uh, well, two great things.
- 50:24Speaker 3: One, I won a super Bowl, So I think had
- 50:27Speaker 3: I retired and not won a super Bowl, then I
- 50:30Speaker 3: would always think about, man, what if what if you
- 50:33Speaker 3: would could have should?
- 50:35Speaker 4: Right? Now that hurts sitting on this side of the couch.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Yah changed championship. Yeah so now, yeah, So I got that.
- 50:48Speaker 2: And then.
- 50:50Speaker 3: When I retired, you know, I didn't I really didn't
- 50:53Speaker 3: know what what I was gonna do after I retired.
- 50:55Speaker 3: But what happened was, you know, you get these these
- 50:58Speaker 3: uh these articles that they they write up about current
- 51:02Speaker 3: players who are retiring who may be good on television.
- 51:04Speaker 3: And so after I retired, I went right into television
- 51:08Speaker 3: right I started working for ESPN. So I really didn't
- 51:11Speaker 3: have time to really like be retired and be scared
- 51:16Speaker 3: about that whole transition because I really went right into something.
- 51:20Speaker 3: So I would say I'm very fortunate that that happened
- 51:23Speaker 3: because I didn't have to sit around like looking back
- 51:25Speaker 3: at oh man, I don't have anything to do. You know,
- 51:27Speaker 3: football is gone, you know, So I was I was
- 51:31Speaker 3: blessed to have that happen. And then third, I would say,
- 51:35Speaker 3: I played eighteen years, and so you know, you know
- 51:40Speaker 3: what I'm saying, Yeah, I played eighteen years, and so
- 51:46Speaker 3: I feel like the the thing for me that I
- 51:50Speaker 3: always think about is that I remember the morning when
- 51:54Speaker 3: I knew I was done playing, and it was against Detroit.
- 51:57Speaker 2: We're in Detroit, and remember.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Looking out the window was snowing and Detroit in the dome,
- 52:03Speaker 3: so it don't it don't matter. But I remember looking
- 52:05Speaker 3: out and saying, man, if they canceled the game to day,
- 52:09Speaker 3: I would be okay. And as soon as I said
- 52:12Speaker 3: that to myself, I was like, it's over.
- 52:15Speaker 2: And so.
- 52:17Speaker 3: That morning that day, I mentally I retired. So I
- 52:22Speaker 3: always say that I actually had that was like the
- 52:25Speaker 3: tenth game of the season. I actually had six more
- 52:28Speaker 3: games where I was able to play after I retired,
- 52:31Speaker 3: So I fulfilled myself as a player, and then I
- 52:33Speaker 3: got to come out of retirement and play again for
- 52:36Speaker 3: six more games. So, dude, I my journey has been.
- 52:42Speaker 3: I wouldn't trade it. You know what I'm saying. I
- 52:44Speaker 3: wouldn't trade it.
- 52:45Speaker 4: So, and when you were talking about, hey, I'm gonna rap,
- 52:48Speaker 4: I'm gonna be done my career, what year was that?
- 52:51Speaker 4: Fifteen twenty fifteen, So that's I mean, imagine walk away
- 52:54Speaker 4: from the game when you were with the Packers.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm good. That would have been Yeah, eight years.
- 53:01Speaker 3: I would have played eight years and I wouldn't be
- 53:04Speaker 3: on busting with the boys. Yeah, bro, yeah, hey, hey,
- 53:08Speaker 3: you guys will be you'd be like, remember that one
- 53:11Speaker 3: guy he went in the Heis Minute.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Remember what was his name?
- 53:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 53:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah yeah yeah Bro.
- 53:21Speaker 4: What got you transitioned into being an entrepreneur with the
- 53:24Speaker 4: wine and the whiskey?
- 53:25Speaker 2: Yeah. So I got into the wine early.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Man.
- 53:29Speaker 3: When I was with the Raiders, our training camp was
- 53:31Speaker 3: in Naple Valley, and so you know, each year training camp,
- 53:35Speaker 3: I was out in about you know, great restaurants all
- 53:38Speaker 3: over the valley and everyone was drinking wine like all
- 53:41Speaker 3: the time, like morning, noon, and night, always drinking wine.
- 53:45Speaker 3: So I just got really interested in it and created
- 53:47Speaker 3: my first label in two thousand and five, and then
- 53:53Speaker 3: around two thousand and seventeen eighteen, Intercept was born. So
- 53:59Speaker 3: that so first, so I was coming out of Naple
- 54:01Speaker 3: Valley now it's in Passo Rubbles. And then, uh, I
- 54:04Speaker 3: kind of always wanted the spirit to be a part
- 54:06Speaker 3: of you know, just my experience, and so a few
- 54:09Speaker 3: years back I met my partner of mine now and
- 54:13Speaker 3: uh we started sourcing whiskey out of Kentucky and uh
- 54:17Speaker 3: that's where Woodson Whiskey was born. So, man, if I
- 54:21Speaker 3: don't go to if I don't go to the Raiders.
- 54:26Speaker 3: I'm probably not into wine and probably not into whiskey.
- 54:29Speaker 3: So it's one of those things where there was an opportunity.
- 54:33Speaker 3: I don't know why I saw it, but I saw
- 54:35Speaker 3: it and then Bam, here we go.
- 54:37Speaker 4: We'll meant to ask him.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Uh yeah, oh man, he can he We got you
- 54:42Speaker 3: got any cups?
- 54:44Speaker 2: We got something you got that you gotta have some.
- 54:46Speaker 1: You gotta talk about your relationship with the with the
- 54:48Speaker 1: Mark Davis.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Yeah, great, great relationship with Mark. Man.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Are you Raiders over Michigan?
- 54:56Speaker 3: I'm I'm a Raider fan, man, I'm not Raiders over.
- 54:58Speaker 3: I can't do Raiders over Michigan, right right, you know, I.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Mean you're like one of us. You're like, you're obviously
- 55:04Speaker 1: an ambassador, but yeah, you're always in You're always in
- 55:06Speaker 1: the mix.
- 55:06Speaker 3: With the with the Silver, always in the mix man.
- 55:08Speaker 3: And uh, you know, it's just all about you know,
- 55:11Speaker 3: respect thing. You know, Mark respected the way that I
- 55:13Speaker 3: played the game. I think you appreciate it. You know
- 55:16Speaker 3: when I came back the second time around and you know,
- 55:21Speaker 3: he had taken over and just you know, playing on
- 55:24Speaker 3: some teams that we didn't have a lot, but just
- 55:27Speaker 3: watching myself go out there every week, you know, sometimes
- 55:30Speaker 3: banged up fingers, messed up ribs and all that. He's like, man,
- 55:34Speaker 3: you showed the guys what it was like, you know,
- 55:36Speaker 3: to be a Raider. So yeah, that's awesome. Raiders do
- 55:41Speaker 3: a fantastic jime.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Mean, I only played a total of like maybe ten
- 55:44Speaker 1: twelve games for the break.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I do have a break. I got a break.
- 55:48Speaker 1: But going off that, I feel like the Raiders do
- 55:50Speaker 1: such a fantastic job of like taking care.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Of bringing back to guys once the raider always a
- 55:55Speaker 3: rady Yeah you hear it. Yeah, you would have been
- 55:59Speaker 3: a great raider man.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there there is some, there are some,
- 56:04Speaker 1: there's some.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Absolutely this is my commemorative battle. So this is only
- 56:11Speaker 3: uh this this is only sold in the BATA. This
- 56:15Speaker 3: one right here, only sold in the BATA. So this
- 56:17Speaker 3: is a two year straight whiskey coming straight out of uh,
- 56:21Speaker 3: straight out of Kentucky.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Give it something, give it.
- 56:24Speaker 4: As I pour the glass and I swrolled along, I can.
- 56:29Speaker 4: I love the texture holding to the side of the
- 56:32Speaker 4: glass and slowly dripping back down. It's a really good whiskey.
- 56:35Speaker 4: As you sip it, I like to put all around
- 56:38Speaker 4: the mouth. No, pause and take it. Because what I
- 56:42Speaker 4: do you like to do when I find the whiskey,
- 56:43Speaker 4: which is different is seeing how much it's gonna.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Stings as it goes down. Yeah, yeah, pause.
- 56:56Speaker 4: It's got a nice uh sweetness to it sure as
- 57:00Speaker 4: it goes down my throat. No, pause is not harsh.
- 57:05Speaker 4: It's not something that I'm gonna go and take down
- 57:07Speaker 4: and be like, oh that's a little tough. Maybe should
- 57:08Speaker 4: put something in there to take away that bite sits
- 57:13Speaker 4: on the tummy just right.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Oh man, Yeah, you kind.
- 57:17Speaker 4: Of feel like, oh, I have a warm and sensation
- 57:18Speaker 4: if it's a cool day outside, I put that in there.
- 57:21Speaker 4: I know internally I'm getting the heat I need. Overall,
- 57:25Speaker 4: four point five.
- 57:27Speaker 1: Four point five five, I think I can hope. Would
- 57:33Speaker 1: you like me to go?
- 57:34Speaker 4: How did you feel about that?
- 57:36Speaker 1: I'm close with what you're saying. I feel like I
- 57:38Speaker 1: taste and feel a lot of the things that you're
- 57:40Speaker 1: talking about. I think it's got a nice sweet heat
- 57:45Speaker 1: up front, like not too much of that peppery up front.
- 57:48Speaker 1: You're kind of thinking to yourself like is it gonna
- 57:50Speaker 1: sting as it goes down your throat? It does nestle
- 57:52Speaker 1: down your throat, very smoothly, and now that I'm in
- 57:55Speaker 1: my third or fourth sip, it's got a nice warm,
- 57:58Speaker 1: not like a harsh we're kind of messes up your
- 58:01Speaker 1: chance just sitting on your stomach.
- 58:03Speaker 3: It's very comfortable on an empty stomach. I don't know
- 58:05Speaker 3: if you've yeah, yeah, I know what you're just saying.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And overall, I would give it a four point five.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're going to take that as a nine
- 58:15Speaker 2: out of ten.
- 58:17Speaker 4: So our dumb shick is it's not about it's always
- 58:22Speaker 4: going to be four point five, because that thing's ever perfect.
- 58:24Speaker 4: But it's the description in what you hear that you
- 58:27Speaker 4: can establish, is that four point five out of five?
- 58:29Speaker 4: Is it that a twenty? So that's for the viewer
- 58:32Speaker 4: to decide.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that, Like even a harsh of bad whiskey,
- 58:35Speaker 1: it's still good at four point five. But you would
- 58:37Speaker 1: explain it in a way of like, and that's not
- 58:39Speaker 1: my favorite.
- 58:40Speaker 4: I would say five are watering, not a lot of
- 58:43Speaker 4: tastes in that, but it's a good whiskey.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I like that. I like that.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Let's a good way to put that, though. I like
- 58:48Speaker 3: the whole I like the whole four out of five portion.
- 58:51Speaker 2: Of it.
- 58:52Speaker 3: You don't know if it's four point five out of
- 58:54Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty to twenty, but it's four point five.
- 58:57Speaker 3: But I love your description, and so I had to
- 59:01Speaker 3: come out here to get this matter of fact not
- 59:03Speaker 3: too long ago. And the first thing I thought was
- 59:06Speaker 3: there wasn't there's a sweetness in but I couldn't put
- 59:08Speaker 3: my finger on it, like like what I what?
- 59:10Speaker 2: I what?
- 59:11Speaker 3: I what sweetness it was? So later on I'll drink
- 59:14Speaker 3: it again. Now I'll have something for you.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Because it does. My first thought is caramel, Like there's
- 59:18Speaker 4: a caramel.
- 59:19Speaker 3: Well, you usually you get a little in your your bourbons,
- 59:22Speaker 3: you know, get a little bit of that caramel, a
- 59:24Speaker 3: little bit of that vanilla. But but there's there's there's
- 59:26Speaker 3: something else, and I just can't because.
- 59:29Speaker 1: There's a sting. It'll sting your lips.
- 59:33Speaker 2: And you never get to get the flavor.
- 59:36Speaker 3: So I needed to have and I always want to
- 59:39Speaker 3: have something that, man, you can you can enjoy. Uh.
- 59:43Speaker 3: You know a lot of people want uh. You know,
- 59:45Speaker 3: barrel strength whiskey, you know, which is great. You got
- 59:48Speaker 3: to put your cube in it. That's cool, and we'll
- 59:50Speaker 3: do some things like that as well. But your your
- 59:53Speaker 3: every day whiskey. What I want you to enjoy on
- 59:56Speaker 3: game day, I want you to be able to enjoy it.
- 59:58Speaker 3: I just you know, put the cube or I don't
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: need you to do all that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Do you like? Are you more of a fan of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: your whiskey or the one? No?
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: I mean that both my kids I know you love.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: But what wins more? What wins more?
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Right now? Who's your favorite child at this moment?
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: You're not.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: You're gonna say, I love them both the same, but
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: you're going to think of one name first. Yeah, I'll
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: tell you right.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I don't do that.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: I don't do the I love I love both my
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: babies the same.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: Boys more than others at certain times.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Well, what I would say, though, what I would say
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: with the with the whiskey, is that it's more interactive.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: That makes sense because there's a lot of things you
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: can do with it, you know. So if I was
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: going to have a party or get together or something,
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: and we wanted to make a bunch of different things
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: out of that whiskey, old man, we got, we got.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: We got a whole range of things that we can do.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: We can express on our teams. Manhattan's old fashioned paper
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: planes we can do all these different things. We could
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: make something with the wine as well.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: We do.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: We do a little it's called a one of the
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: restaurants I go that have both of my products, it's
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: called the Intercept Sour So it has their housemade sour mix,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: my red blend which is not there, and my whiskey,
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: and they mixed it in this nice little.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I feel like, you know what I'm saying, do you
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: have a cigar?
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Notyt?
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I feel like you got the whiskey,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: like I feel like you got you got the nice
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: the age beard. That's really well done. I feel like
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: you're a cigar guy. Did you like that when the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Raiders will pull that out after the victory?
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Talk about talk about Ap getting the getting the head
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: coaching job.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think Mark had to do it.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Man had to do it.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: It was a ground swell of support for for Ap
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: and just the way he came in Man and and
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: the way that the team just really responded to him.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: I thought they had to do it. So I'm excited
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: for him.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: And I was able to go and talk to him
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: before they went and played Indianapolis, and I told the
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: guys I said, hey, man, I can't wait until I
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: get the chance to come in the locker room and
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: hang out at Club Braider with you guys. And so
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: last game of the season against Denver, I got a
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: chance to get in the Club Braider. After the game,
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Max crowsby running around, Yeah, hands me the cigar.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: And that was a moment, man, that was a real moment.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: And so I love it.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: I think Ap is gonna, he's gonna, you know, do
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: a great job. I think he's gonna, you know, hopefully.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: You know, he's a great talent evaluator along with the
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: new GM man and they get guys in here that
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: love the game of football and who want to be Raiders,
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: and so if he can accomplish that, yeah, we'll be right.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: We'll be right.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: And we appreciate you coming on.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: This has been incredible. Man.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: There was one quick story I do want to tell.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: It was after my rookie year and I was in town.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: We were doing a charity event. I believe it was
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Yours and Hushingson's Sturity event, and I went to my
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: old house because obviously a couple of guys were there
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: that I used to live at. I was damn near
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: blackout drunk, and I was on some extracurriculars as well.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: You come along way from that baby swimming pool, no question, A.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Car, dude, A car pulls up and Charles Woodson walks.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: A little you know, the little pools that you fill
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: up for like two year olds.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Ye, this guy sitting in it, and we're you know,
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: the you've seen the house I lived on. It was
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: like right on that main street called State.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Street, not far from not far from got.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: Drunk, now far from Templar. He pulls up because I'm
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: supposed to be that charity event and I ended up
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: going blackout. It was a terrible experience for everybody else
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: but me. But he pulls up and all my boys
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: are there, and you came up at me up. We
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: talked for a second and I got back in that tub.
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: After you left. I felt like the fucking man. I
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: was like, you know, he just pulled up just to
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: say what's up.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: And left, right right right, randomly riding down the street. Taylor,
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: why in a baby swimming pool? It was, I gotta
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: see what's going on over it was.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: That was an interesting time of my life. Will Will
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: has heard some stories about me and Michigan and the couple.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: First different all of you offensive linemen. Man, you guys
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: are crazy. Nuts, you guys are crazy.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely calmed down quite a bit, thank god,
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: because I would have right now, i'de.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: This is what I tell people before you in is
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: you You. You're a different person now, you do things differently.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: And so we all came into the NFL, you played
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: you know how many other years and you do a
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: lot of dumb ship and so what I tell young
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: guys is like, I hope you make it to the
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: other side. You know what I'm saying, Because a lot
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: of people in those first couple of years they get
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: into some ship they never recover. But if you can
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: play long enough, man, and kind of just keep yourself
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: somewhat clean and and keep yourself fitting ready to play,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: and you can get to the other side. Man, it's
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: so much, so much better, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: But you but you don't know unless you get over it.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: I'm happy you made it to the other side.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Appreciate that, man. Yeah, it's a it's a cool transition.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: It would be an incredible regret to not make that
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: transition and then be sitting you know, out of the
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: league and knowing like, man, what could I have actually
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: done if I wouldn't have just got out of my
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: own way, and so it was it's really cool, but
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: that moment was awesome. Man, that was a very cool moment.
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: This ultimate Please subscribe.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Hey Dad, Charles Woodson, Charles Woodson appreciate you.
