- 0:47Gotta love it.
- 0:47The NFL season is finally here and week one of our teams is coming up this weekend.
- 0:52And no teams are more excited than.
- 0:54Probably the Buffalo Bills franchise.
- 0:56It's been a long time coming.
- 0:58They have a great chance of maybe being able to represent the AFC in the super bowl once again.
- 1:03But there's something really special that may happen after week two.
- 1:07Our guest today, Scott Perry, has something.
- 1:10Really exciting for the Buffalo Bills fan, along with some Buffalo Bills history.

- 2:00And we are in for a treat.
- 2:01We are going to talk about some great Buffalo Bills history Today.
- 2:05We have Scott Perry, our friend who was on an earlier episode.
- 2:08Scott, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 2:10Hey, thanks for having me, Darin.
- 2:12I really appreciate being on your quality podcast.
- 2:15It's a pleasure.
- 2:16Well, the pleasure is all ours, Scott.
- 2:18And of course, you know, a lot of this material we're getting is from your book.
- 2:22Maybe you could just give us a quick glimpse of what the book is in the title and we'll talk more about it here near the end of this episode.
- 2:28Thanks, Aaron.
- 2:29I appreciate you saying that.
- 2:30NFL since 1970 is.
- 2:33Boy, it's got such a huge history starting back in the late 70s.
- 2:37And it's a way, it's the ultimate visual historical standings reference.
- 2:42So by using the standings with the helmets.
- 2:44I'm a helmet fanatic, so I know there's a helmet addict Facebook page, right, Darren?
- 2:49You know about that?
- 2:50Yeah, that I, I know we've talked to the gentleman that runs that.
- 2:54So we've talked to Blaze quite a bit.
- 2:56Everything is helmets.
- 2:57So I want you to see it's helmets for standings and then compilation.
- 3:02So I'm not sure I'm excited for Bill Stands.
- 3:06So.
- 3:06So that's a good segue into it being a Bills Fan being from Rochester, you know, I'm in the Bills market area too, here in Erie.
- 3:13Why don't you us about the piece on Bill's history today?
- 3:16Yeah, the.
- 3:17Bill's owner, Ralph Wilson was from Detroit and he was exploring the idea of having an AFL team in Miami.
- 3:24But somehow he ended up picking Buffalo.
- 3:27And I meant to look it up there and I apologize.
- 3:29I'm pretty sure the 1960 uniform of the Buffalo Bills was silver and blue.
- 3:33Do you know if that might be pretty accurate?
- 3:37That I'm not sure, but I got some people I can probably check with to see.
- 3:41That's a segue.
- 3:42I am Professor Perry.
- 3:43I'm here to educate as many fans as I can.
- 3:46Mostly I'm seen here in Denver talking to senior communities, but I'm trying to reach the younger fan base and make everybody smarter.
- 3:53You know, it's all about winning a championship when you're a pro football fan.
- 3:56But this book has.
- 3:58Now that's my mission.
- 4:00But I keep track of every franchise mostly since the merger.
- 4:04Whether they're a 500 team above or below.
- 4:08Now championships are the most important, but whether or not they're 500, that's a big deal.
- 4:14Not only that, now, since kickoff 70, it's been 877 games.
- 4:18It's possible to be a 500 game winner and it's also possible to 500 game loser.
- 4:24We'll talk more about that.
- 4:25So I think that's to me as a neurodivergent guy, it's just something that I'm so focused on and I know there's fans out there that have an interest in another aspect of the history of their organization and how
- 4:38they're doing overall as a team.
- 4:40So.
- 4:41So Buffalo starts in 1960 and I, I love.
- 4:45I gotta start about the factors.
- 4:46Eight original AFL franchises.
- 4:49Of those eight, two of them my Denver Broncos, the Buffalo Bills have never left the city, never changed their nickname.
- 4:56The other six, we can get into that further, Darren, as to what happened to the other six franchises.
- 5:02But only my Broncos and, and my pseudo Buffalo Bills have never wavered off their name and location.
- 5:09Pretty cool, huh?
- 5:10Yeah, that is interesting.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13So another connection.
- 5:14Well, in 60, Lou Saban was the Patriots head coach.
- 5:19He lasted about a year and a half, moved over to Buffalo, won the 1964 and 65 AFL championship.
- 5:27And in 66 they lost 1966 AFL championship to the Chiefs.
- 5:33So had this super bowl started?
- 5:35So I'm all about the Super Bowl.
- 5:37I really wish that we could go back in time and have the NFL say oh, this team, this league looks pretty good.
- 5:42Let's play the 1960 NFL championship.
- 5:47AFL versus NFL.
- 5:48That would have been.
- 5:49Do you know what teams that would have been, Darren?
- 5:511960.
- 5:53No, who's that?
- 5:54The.
- 5:55Well, the Bear, Bears and the Oilers.
- 5:57That would have been.
- 5:58Ah, you got it half right.
- 5:59Which one's right?
- 6:01The Oilers is right.
- 6:02I know that for the AFL, I'm not sure NFL at that point 60.
- 6:06Is a big deal.
- 6:07Lombardi got beat by the packers and became a big anti Eagle guy.
- 6:10But then he went on to win five championships by the end of the 60s.
- 6:13So Super Bowl 1, had it started in 60, would have been Green Bay versus Houston.
- 6:19So all right, I'm getting off track but so the Bills would have been In Super bowl one had it started after the 64 season, four and one after it started the 65 season.
- 6:30But then they play to go to the super bowl and the Chiefs beat them.
- 6:35Very frustrating to see the, the cheeks who are the originators of the AFL fitting that they went to Super Bowl 1 but Buffalo missed out on that.
- 6:43So fans had to wait 25 years from Super Bowl 1 to get into the Super Bowl.
- 6:49But another aspect that I, I love, I would.
- 6:52I moved from Denver to Rochester in 78, but I, my dad played tennis with the guy and his, and his cousin was Terry Miller.
- 7:02Terry Miller was drafted at Oklahoma and he replaced O.J.
- 7:05Simpson and he had a thousand yard rushing season.
- 7:08I mean that's pretty obscure, right?
- 7:09Does that name even remotely ring a bell?
- 7:11Darren?
- 7:13No, I've never, I've never heard that name.
- 7:15But that's interesting though, I gotta divert to that.
- 7:18So the Bill.
- 7:22So I'm a fan and in 1980 I'm growing.
- 7:28Everything is committed to memory.
- 7:29That's how it's my God given gift to memorize all the fans football facts.
- 7:35But 1969 I happened to just have a, an OJ Simpson card here.
- 7:43But I'm bringing up OJ because in 69, his rookie year, they beat the Dolphins and he was long gone by the time the Bills beat the Dolphins again.
- 7:54So last game of the 60s, now the Bills are going 020 and beat the Dolphins in the first game of the 80s.
- 8:02So an entire decade to 10 years, two games a season.
- 8:06Oh and 20 and the Buffalo Bills in 1980 win the division.
- 8:10And I love 1980s, one of the first years I was really in tune and I, when I became a fan in 78, decided to love all the bad teams.
- 8:18So in 1980 who were the division winners?
- 8:20I Had I got it right here.
- 8:21The Browns, very unusual for the Browns win their division, the Bills won their division.
- 8:26Getting out of that Dolphin headlock, basically.
- 8:30Right.
- 8:30And the Chargers, they won their second in a row, but that's pretty rare.
- 8:35And then also in the nfc, the Eagles went on to play in the Super Bowl.
- 8:39The Vikings were the only kind of normal team that was expected to win the division.
- 8:45And then the Falcons won their first division in 1980, losing to Danny White in that horrible playoff game.
- 8:52Because I like the teams that were bad.
- 8:54So anyway, so 1980 was a big deal in Bill's history.
- 8:59So got a fast forward.
- 9:02Of course we'll talk about the.
- 9:05Well, no, it's in the middle of this.
- 9:06Of the four year run of being AFC champion.
- 9:10Right.
- 9:10So.
- 9:10And now as a Bronco fan, I'll talk about the fact that the Bills crushed the Raiders 517 in the AFC Championship game 10 to 7.
- 9:20Elway got hurt and Kubiak couldn't quite make the comeback in Buffalo.
- 9:24And they lost 10 to 7, the same score they lost to the Patriots last February.
- 9:30An injury to Elway caused a 10 to 7 loss in the AFC championship game.
- 9:34My Broncos are 10 and 3 in this, in the AFC championship game, having lost two 10 to 7.
- 9:42Ironic.
- 9:44So still pretty good record, 10 and 3.
- 9:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:48So.
- 9:51So then they also, they beat Joe Montana's Chiefs in that run.
- 9:56And you know, I, my book has a page in it, the what if Super Bowls.
- 10:00I love it.
- 10:00I was in a whole podcast a couple years ago based on that page.
- 10:04What if the opposite conference participant won the game and went to the Super Bowl?
- 10:08So not a mix, but the actual two losers played.
- 10:12And in that game in 90, 95, that Joe Montana would have faced the Kansas City Chiefs, but it ended up being the Bills versus the Cowboys.
- 10:24And not that.
- 10:25So that ever crossed your mind before, Darren, that that would have been the case?
- 10:28No, no.
- 10:29But that, that would have been an interesting prelude to Montana's career, wouldn't it?
- 10:33Instead I had to endure my Bills getting crushed by a team I really not a big fan of.
- 10:38So interesting how that played out.
- 10:41So, so that's, that's.
- 10:42I mean that's part of the four year, four year run of the, of the Bills.
- 10:47That's part of their history, of course.
- 10:49And it's, it's great.
- 10:50Now me being a helmet guy, I gotta tell the story, man.
- 10:54I hated that red helmet.
- 10:55And you know, me being an old guy, I know pretty much why they did it because if you look at the standings in my book.
- 11:01I.
- 11:01I just love my book.
- 11:02It's the ultimate way to just look at what happened in the past.
- 11:04But the 1983 season, all the AFC east teams had red helmets.
- 11:09Well, the jets by then were green.
- 11:11But Joe Ferguson was an old, older quarterback, and he was having trouble seeing his receivers downfield with the.
- 11:18All the white helmets.
- 11:19Right.
- 11:19So they converted to a red.
- 11:22So that was.
- 11:2384 was the first year.
- 11:26So I just.
- 11:27This is bizarre how my life ties in with football.
- 11:30So it's the year 2011, and I am so excited the Bills finally go back to the white.
- 11:35And I'm like, yes.
- 11:37Well.
- 11:38And now they're coming to play a preseason game in Denver.
- 11:40I'm like, I'm gonna see the Bills in the white helmet.
- 11:42Well, I had to go to a wedding, and I'm up.
- 11:45And this is really ironic.
- 11:46If you're.
- 11:46If you know Denver and you're from Buffalo, visiting, sightseeing, you go into a Bills game.
- 11:51Here you go up I 70, Interstate 70.
- 11:54The first thing when you get up the hill, you see a big green sign, Buffalo Bills grade.
- 12:00Isn't that a really.
- 12:01Not a fitting way to start your vacation?
- 12:03Come to see the Bills.
- 12:04But anyway, I was up in that area at a wedding.
- 12:07So I'm sitting at the wedding overlooking the entire Denver area, and I can see the stadium lights.
- 12:12And I'm like, I'm sitting at a wedding and there's the Buffalo Bills playing the Broncos.
- 12:16But I was so, so thrilled.
- 12:19I mean, if you know me, I have New England roots, so I love the old New England helmet and I really despise the flying Elvis.
- 12:26So it really affects my ability to cheer on the Patriots.
- 12:29That's one of the many reasons.
- 12:30So, anyway.
- 12:32Yeah.
- 12:33All right, well, why don't we take this opportunity before we let you go here off the segment to just tell us people the name of your book again and where folks can get it.
- 12:42Great.
- 12:43Yes.
- 12:43It's called the NFL since 1970, Scott Perry, and it's on Amazon.
- 12:49So I've had some help with it.
- 12:51I.
- 12:53I do what I do, and I'm.
- 12:54I.
- 12:55So there is a small version that's black and white.
- 12:57Please make sure that you don't get that.
- 12:59There's a color version at 6 by 9, but if you get the 8 by 11, you're going to be much happier.
- 13:05The effect of.
- 13:06It's kind of like a comic book.
- 13:07You flip the page and you watch your favorite team's helmet go up and down based on the effect of their quarterback, head coach and ownership.
- 13:14So.
- 13:15And it's when I put the word since my book title, it's like making donuts.
- 13:18I got to keep it updated every year.
- 13:20So my hope is that you'll get it, enjoy it for the season, give it to a young kid, let them become a fanatic fan and order a new one.
- 13:27And get that that updated page which might be your NFL team, showing how many championships they've won since since the merger.
- 13:36So fantastic.
- 13:38Well, folks, if you're driving and you didn't get a chance to have a pencil, write that down or, you know, you're at the gym, don't worry.
- 13:44We have the link to to Scott's book in the show notes of both YouTube and on the podcast.
- 13:51If the bills go 13 and 5 this year, they will be a winning organization for the first time in their history as an NFL team.
- 13:57So they had to go 16 and 1.
- 13:59They didn't do it.
- 14:00But if they go 13 5, they will have one more win than loss in the regular season since kickoff, 1970.
- 14:08That's the first for the franchise.
- 14:09So if you're a Bills fan, you definitely need to get a copy of the book to celebrate that fact and watch as it's the last time they're a losing organization.
- 14:19Fantastic.
- 14:19All right, Scott, well, thank you and we will talk to you again next week.
- 14:24Peeking up at the clock the time's running down.
- 14:26We're gonna go into victory formation.
- 14:27Take a knee and let this baby run out.
- 14:30Thanks for joining us.
