Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's up, everybody. Welcome into this edition of the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Czech Odaily. It's Andrew de Checo with a Tuesday edition.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Short week for the Philadelphia Eagles. They are holding walkthroughs
- 0:20Speaker 1: leading up to Thursday night football against the New York Giants.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So let's get to the practice report before I start
- 0:27Speaker 1: to take a closer look at the offense and the
- 0:29Speaker 1: defense and try to make sense of what we're seeing
- 0:33Speaker 1: at this point in the season.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So not practice.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So the Eagles didn't practice today obviously, so Tuesday's report
- 0:42Speaker 1: is an estimation.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Not practicing.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Tight end Grant Kakata with the oblique, guard Landon Dickerson ankle, limited,
- 0:50Speaker 1: running back Saquon Barkley knee, Linebacker Jahad Campbell biceps, defensive
- 0:55Speaker 1: tackle Byron Young triceps, full go linebacker to Kobe Dean
- 1:01Speaker 1: with the knee. We'll have to wait and see if
- 1:04Speaker 1: Nikobe Dean ultimately gets activated this week. Vicfangeo on Tuesday
- 1:08Speaker 1: mentioned that it's a possibility but still unsure. His twenty
- 1:13Speaker 1: one day window, of course, was open last was opened
- 1:15Speaker 1: last week, but the Eagles opted not to bring him
- 1:20Speaker 1: up to the fifty three. It's also worth noting that
- 1:22Speaker 1: there is a spot open on the fifty three, But
- 1:26Speaker 1: you have to look at the MetLife turf and wonder
- 1:28Speaker 1: if this is the week to get Nakobe Dean up
- 1:32Speaker 1: and running on the active roster and in.
- 1:35Speaker 2: A game situation.
- 1:36Speaker 1: If not this week, however, it would almost be assured,
- 1:41Speaker 1: barring a setback or something unforeseen, that the Minnesota Vikings
- 1:45Speaker 1: game would be the one for Nakobe Dean. But let's
- 1:48Speaker 1: zoom out a little bit and hone in on the
- 1:53Speaker 1: offense because that's been a primary talking point through the
- 1:56Speaker 1: first five weeks of the season. Kevin Patulo, he's been
- 2:02Speaker 1: I think he's been unfairly scrutinized. I think some of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the stances on him have been a little bit extreme.
- 2:09Speaker 1: He just called his fifth NFL game. There's been times
- 2:13Speaker 1: this season where you see aggressive play calling. I look
- 2:16Speaker 1: at the first three drives against the Cowboys to start
- 2:19Speaker 1: the season, pretty productive, they were touchdowns. There was aggressive
- 2:24Speaker 1: points in the Chiefs game against the Rams. You have
- 2:28Speaker 1: to take half of that game where they were the
- 2:31Speaker 1: Bucks game. Early in that game, they were very aggressive
- 2:34Speaker 1: and creative running plays off of the push play. And
- 2:38Speaker 1: I like what they did against the against the Denver
- 2:42Speaker 1: Broncos Sunday afternoon, in terms of just being able to
- 2:48Speaker 1: take shots down the field, keep the test the secondary,
- 2:53Speaker 1: get the passing game going, because that has been a
- 2:55Speaker 1: primary talking point for much of the season, because Brown
- 3:00Speaker 1: and DeVante Smith to all world receivers have had trouble
- 3:04Speaker 1: finding ways to establish themselves within the offense. And that
- 3:08Speaker 1: falls on the play caller, Kevin Patulo, that falls on
- 3:13Speaker 1: the offensive line, which we're going to talk to and
- 3:15Speaker 1: talk about in a moment, That falls sometimes on Jalen Hurts.
- 3:20Speaker 2: But the offense needs to be better.
- 3:23Speaker 1: There's been far too many three and outs for a
- 3:25Speaker 1: team this well stocked on that side of the ball.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley hasn't had the impact that we were all expecting.
- 3:33Speaker 2: But there's reasons for that. And when I look at.
- 3:35Speaker 1: This offense right now, and you oftentimes will see the
- 3:39Speaker 1: tail of two halves and they're not able to sustain
- 3:42Speaker 1: that for the entirety of the game.
- 3:43Speaker 2: They don't play four quarters.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And I look at the offensive line as a primary
- 3:48Speaker 1: culprit for the offensive shortcomings, and to expand on that,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I think left tackle Jordan Mailatta has been outstanding this
- 3:56Speaker 1: year and based On In my estimation, he's had a
- 4:00Speaker 1: very good start to the season. But left guard Landon Dickerson.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He opened the season well, he had in the open
- 4:06Speaker 1: practice in the summertime, he had.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The knee injury.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Then right around week one it was the back. Now
- 4:13Speaker 1: it's the ankle. He's clearly battling through things and you
- 4:16Speaker 1: have to commend him for that, but you also have
- 4:18Speaker 1: to wonder if sitting him down for a week or
- 4:21Speaker 1: two would serve both he and the offense well or better.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And just being able to let him heal.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But get a someone who is closer to full strength
- 4:33Speaker 1: in there, and in this case, if Landing can't go
- 4:36Speaker 1: against the Giants Thursday night, it would be Brett Toath.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But there's also Cam Jurgens, the center who hasn't played
- 4:43Speaker 1: to his standard. And I often say context is important
- 4:47Speaker 1: here because Cam Jurgens had off season back surgery. He
- 4:50Speaker 1: didn't work all that much in the summer, so that
- 4:54Speaker 1: needs to be taken into account. Tyler Steen is new
- 4:58Speaker 1: to he hasn't played this much. He's new to the
- 5:01Speaker 1: starting lineup, and Lane Johnson's dealt with things.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He had the stinger and things like that.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So I say all that to say that the offense
- 5:10Speaker 1: is not really able to establish much in terms of
- 5:12Speaker 1: the run game.
- 5:13Speaker 2: They're not driving defenders off the ball.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Saquon Barkwiy's being hit by defenders immediately upon receiving the carry.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It seems so he has to get creative and he
- 5:23Speaker 1: has to shoulder a lot of the burdens, shaking tacklers
- 5:26Speaker 1: using that contact balance. And it wasn't until Sunday where
- 5:30Speaker 1: he had a season long seventeen yard run. The explosives
- 5:33Speaker 1: have not been there. Six carries for thirty yards in
- 5:36Speaker 1: that game. The inside zone stuff is not working this
- 5:40Speaker 1: season for the offensive line. I don't suddenly believe that
- 5:44Speaker 1: this offensive line just can't play or that age is
- 5:48Speaker 1: catching up. There are a lot of factors that need
- 5:52Speaker 1: to be taking into account. One, they paved the way
- 5:56Speaker 1: for a two thousand yard rusher, the push plays. They
- 6:00Speaker 1: played well into February last season.
- 6:04Speaker 2: That takes a.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Toll on their bodies, and with the short and offseason,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and then you get right back in OTA's in training camp,
- 6:12Speaker 1: especially when you have someone like Dickerson and Jurgens who
- 6:15Speaker 1: had off season surgery. That wears on lineman and not
- 6:19Speaker 1: making an excuse for him believe that. But all that
- 6:23Speaker 1: should be, you know, should be mentioned when you look
- 6:26Speaker 1: at the play of the line, and I guess when
- 6:29Speaker 1: you look at it, there is cause for concern because
- 6:33Speaker 1: there's not really a moment for pause aside from the
- 6:36Speaker 1: week nine by so you're constantly getting after it each
- 6:40Speaker 1: and every week and not giving your body much of
- 6:42Speaker 1: a reprieve from that contact. So I think unless until
- 6:47Speaker 1: that offensive line gets healthier and they're able to kind
- 6:50Speaker 1: of re establish that level of play that we've grown
- 6:53Speaker 1: accustomed to, it's tough to run the football, which is
- 6:57Speaker 1: the Eagles foundation, That is their identity, but they're not
- 7:01Speaker 1: able to establish that or re establish it. I should say,
- 7:05Speaker 1: you're becoming a little bit unbalanced and you have to
- 7:08Speaker 1: go pass heavy.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I thought that.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I think the line has done a nice job in
- 7:11Speaker 1: terms of pass protection, but running the football.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They've struggled.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And now we're into October and the team still doesn't
- 7:20Speaker 1: have a solidified identity. We know what they want to be,
- 7:25Speaker 1: we know what they're foundational approach offensively with what it
- 7:30Speaker 1: is at when they're all firing on all cylinders. But
- 7:33Speaker 1: right now, this is an offense that they can throw
- 7:36Speaker 1: the ball, but maybe not consistently enough they can. They
- 7:39Speaker 1: can't run the football very effectively right now, and they're
- 7:43Speaker 1: suffering from a lot of miscues. There's a lot of penalties,
- 7:46Speaker 1: a lot of self inflicted wounds. And for a team
- 7:49Speaker 1: like the Eagles that prioritize being fundamentally sound, focusing in
- 7:54Speaker 1: on the details and things like that, I think the
- 7:57Speaker 1: Eagles drill that, and I would argue they would they
- 7:59Speaker 1: drill that more than any team. They've sort of lost
- 8:02Speaker 1: their way a little bit, and when you have a
- 8:05Speaker 1: certain facet of the offense that the team has really
- 8:08Speaker 1: hung their hat on in the offensive line for years now,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you can't afford to let your details slip and not
- 8:17Speaker 1: be assignment sound and suffer from poor execution. They went
- 8:22Speaker 1: way past Happy Jay when Hurts dropped back forty four
- 8:25Speaker 1: times against the Broncos. That is not a sustainable recipe
- 8:31Speaker 1: for success moving forward. They have to get the running
- 8:34Speaker 1: game going, and I know I understand that that sounds
- 8:36Speaker 1: simple on the surface, but there are a lot of
- 8:39Speaker 1: components that factor into making that operation work. So there's
- 8:44Speaker 1: some of the contributing factors to the disjointed nature. And
- 8:48Speaker 1: you couple that all with a first time play caller,
- 8:51Speaker 1: Kevin Botulo just calling his fifth game. I think they
- 8:55Speaker 1: need to get quicker in and out of the huddle,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and Nick Sirianni and Kevin Petula have spoken about that.
- 9:00Speaker 2: There's a lot of factors.
- 9:01Speaker 1: There's a lot of moving parts, as one might expect,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and it's hard to pinpoint one area as to why
- 9:08Speaker 1: that operation is a little bit slower to develop than
- 9:12Speaker 1: it probably should be. So you take all of those
- 9:15Speaker 1: things into consideration, and that is why through five weeks
- 9:18Speaker 1: of the season, the offense hasn't met the mark. Thursday
- 9:23Speaker 1: night against the Giants could be a good get right
- 9:24Speaker 1: spot for that unit, but we have to see it.
- 9:27Speaker 1: They have to put together four quarters. But I guess
- 9:30Speaker 1: to put a bow on that side of the ball.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I don't get the sentiment that anyone's pressing or anyone
- 9:38Speaker 1: on that side of the ball is you know, panicking,
- 9:41Speaker 1: they're losing you know, faith or they're losing faith into
- 9:45Speaker 1: the you know, their convictions. Offensively, they're banding together. They
- 9:49Speaker 1: know how much talent they have. Now it's about coming
- 9:51Speaker 1: together as a collective and seeing it through. So this
- 9:54Speaker 1: team is predicated on, you know, impeccable culture they have
- 9:59Speaker 1: that they put the work in, They drill it, They
- 10:02Speaker 1: drill the fundamentals, probably better than most every team out there.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It's just about getting out there and trying to string
- 10:08Speaker 1: together some production, some successful plays here and there, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: try to get this offense rowing. Because they are far
- 10:17Speaker 1: too talented, I think all would agree to be sort
- 10:20Speaker 1: of staggering through these games. They should be able to
- 10:22Speaker 1: put teams away and, for lack of a better term,
- 10:26Speaker 1: choke them out like they did last season when they
- 10:28Speaker 1: had a lead like they did against the If they
- 10:30Speaker 1: had a lead like they did against the Broncos up
- 10:32Speaker 1: seventeen to three in the fourth quarter last season, well
- 10:35Speaker 1: they just hand the ball of Saquon Barkley and solve
- 10:37Speaker 1: the game away.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that many
- 10:40Speaker 3: plants and trees actually do better when planted this time

- 13:32Speaker 3: about convenience. Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience.

- 13:57Speaker 3: the community with specials for fans, students, service members, and
- 14:01Speaker 3: healthcare pros. Camden Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices, and
- 14:07Speaker 3: an experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 14:10Speaker 1: They have to get back into that and re establish
- 14:12Speaker 1: that identity. Defensively, I think the defense has done a really,
- 14:19Speaker 1: really solid job this season, and they've been put in
- 14:21Speaker 1: some challenging circumstances. One, you go into it and your cornerback.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Two it was Adorri Jackson for the first three weeks
- 14:30Speaker 1: for the next two, it's been Kilee Ringo. I think
- 14:33Speaker 1: Kiey Ringo's held up relatively well. He's a younger player.
- 14:37Speaker 1: They've invested two years of development in him, and it
- 14:40Speaker 1: would seem like it would benefit the Eagles and Ringo
- 14:43Speaker 1: to stick with him, and the more he plays, the
- 14:46Speaker 1: better he's going to be, or you'll at least have
- 14:48Speaker 1: a better sense of the player that he is approaching
- 14:51Speaker 1: the October trade deadline if they decide that they want
- 14:54Speaker 1: another option there. But aside from that, you have Quinnon Mitchell,
- 14:58Speaker 1: who is quickly a sestabish wishing himself as an elite
- 15:01Speaker 1: player at that position. Cooper Dejen who Vic Fangio called
- 15:05Speaker 1: a hell of a football player. He can play nickel
- 15:08Speaker 1: corner safety, really good tackler in the open field. He
- 15:12Speaker 1: can match up with tight ends, wide receivers of all
- 15:15Speaker 1: shapes and sizes, and I think the safety play is
- 15:18Speaker 1: improving each and every week. With Reed Blanket Ship, who
- 15:21Speaker 1: is a team captain, solidifying that area.
- 15:24Speaker 2: You have a rangy back end.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Player in Drew mccuba, the second round pick, who's had
- 15:29Speaker 1: some lapses in coverage, but that's to be expected from
- 15:32Speaker 1: a young player. He's coachable. He has the football intellect
- 15:36Speaker 1: and the ability to erase what just happened, bounce back
- 15:40Speaker 1: on the next play, and go out there and play football.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So he's making encouraging strides. Looking at the second level,
- 15:47Speaker 1: Jahad Campbell dynamic second level player, much like mccuba. You
- 15:52Speaker 1: can see him showing signs of growth each and every week.
- 15:55Speaker 1: The more he plays, the better he gets. Zach Bond
- 15:58Speaker 1: is the heartbeat of the defense this year. Year He's
- 16:00Speaker 1: all over the field. The Eagles have used him a
- 16:03Speaker 1: little bit as an edge rusher. I think when you
- 16:06Speaker 1: look at the edge rusher group as a whole, they're
- 16:10Speaker 1: not getting what they may have expected. But we've talked
- 16:12Speaker 1: about this in training camp that the edge rusher group
- 16:16Speaker 1: wasn't match it wasn't meeting the eye test and what
- 16:20Speaker 1: you're seeing now. I think the only full sack is
- 16:23Speaker 1: Zadarius Smith, who has one and a half sacks. He
- 16:26Speaker 1: had a half against the Chiefs and then a full
- 16:28Speaker 1: sack against the Broncos. But they had to do some
- 16:32Speaker 1: things to free him up. It was a stunt, I
- 16:34Speaker 1: believe on Sunday Well. They had to add him early
- 16:39Speaker 1: in the season to fortify that group. Nolan Smith, who
- 16:42Speaker 1: everyone had high expectations for myself included.
- 16:45Speaker 2: He's on injured reserves.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Injured reserve right now with the tricep strain, Jay looks
- 16:50Speaker 1: Hunt hasn't factored much into the equation. He's been playing
- 16:54Speaker 1: the most amount of snaps out of any edge rusher
- 16:56Speaker 1: that the Eagles have, and josh USh josh ushe might
- 17:01Speaker 1: be the Eagle's best pure pass rusher. Based off of
- 17:03Speaker 1: what I've seen through five weeks, I think that his
- 17:06Speaker 1: rushes have been exceptional. He's getting a lot of pressure
- 17:09Speaker 1: in a situational role. And then they had Patrick Johnson
- 17:13Speaker 1: who's a core special teamer and Azizo Julari, who was
- 17:15Speaker 1: active for the first time against the Broncos, had a
- 17:17Speaker 1: tackle for loss at a quarterback hit. Maybe he's someone
- 17:21Speaker 1: who can step in and give you some quality snaps
- 17:24Speaker 1: who play thirty four snaps against the Broncos. But because
- 17:28Speaker 1: of the inefficiencies and their inability, I should say to
- 17:32Speaker 1: get to the quarterback, Vic Vanjo has had to blitz
- 17:35Speaker 1: teams at a remarkable rate more than he typically does
- 17:40Speaker 1: in order to generate pressure and try to affect the quarterback.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And because of that you're seeing I guess that he
- 17:47Speaker 1: doesn't have quite the same optionality that he ordinarily would now.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Defensive line wise, I would say that they've been sort
- 17:55Speaker 1: of middling this year. They're not getting that same interior
- 17:59Speaker 1: pressure now alhen Carter's dealt with the shoulder injury back
- 18:02Speaker 1: to training camp and he's been on the injury report
- 18:04Speaker 1: with that.
- 18:05Speaker 2: That's likely affecting him.
- 18:07Speaker 1: But also against the run, this unit has not been
- 18:10Speaker 1: a stout as it was last season.
- 18:13Speaker 2: You trade out Milton Williams for Moro a.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Jomo is a better pass rusher, he brings more juice,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but he doesn't have the same run defending ability that
- 18:22Speaker 1: Milton Williams brought to the equation.
- 18:24Speaker 2: And Byron Young as well.
- 18:27Speaker 1: He's giving the Eagles quality snaps, But in terms of
- 18:30Speaker 1: run defense, that's something that I thought Thomas Booker, who's
- 18:33Speaker 1: no longer here he was traded to the Raiders back
- 18:35Speaker 1: in August, I thought he provided that.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Byron Young gives you some.
- 18:39Speaker 1: More interior push and quality snaps. Good hustle player, but
- 18:44Speaker 1: not necessarily the same production and run support. So those
- 18:48Speaker 1: are areas where I'm noticing the Eagles some of the
- 18:52Speaker 1: different discrepancies in this defense. Versus last year's But they
- 18:55Speaker 1: are a young, youth infused, fast flowing defense that I
- 19:00Speaker 1: think the more they play together, they're better they're getting.
- 19:03Speaker 2: But they're being put in very difficult situations.
- 19:05Speaker 1: We mentioned the offense at length here, and they're unable
- 19:08Speaker 1: to play four quarters. So the Broncos game, for example,
- 19:14Speaker 1: they put up seventeen points and the Eagles carry the
- 19:18Speaker 1: seventeen to three lead really until the fourth quarter, and
- 19:24Speaker 1: the defense always allowed three points, but eventually that proverbial
- 19:28Speaker 1: dam broke and they surrendered eighteen unanswered points. Now, they
- 19:31Speaker 1: played seventy four snaps against the Broncos, seventy two against
- 19:35Speaker 1: the Bucks in scorching temperatures. They're being out there, they
- 19:39Speaker 1: have to constantly keep going out there. They're not getting
- 19:41Speaker 1: much of a reprieve because of the offense continuously stalling.
- 19:46Speaker 1: So I think it's unrealistic and unfair to expect the
- 19:49Speaker 1: defense to play nearly perfect, and while they're holding up
- 19:54Speaker 1: their end of the bargain, they're not necessarily getting that
- 19:56Speaker 1: reciprocated from the offense. The special teams in the defense
- 20:00Speaker 1: has bailed the Eagles out this season, and they need
- 20:04Speaker 1: they for them to be what they want to be
- 20:07Speaker 1: and go where they want to go.
- 20:08Speaker 2: They have to start playing complimentary football.
- 20:11Speaker 1: This is a good defense, but they need to be
- 20:13Speaker 1: supported by this offense, this high powered, star studded offense,
- 20:19Speaker 1: and you can't expect your defense to surrender three or
- 20:23Speaker 1: ten or thirteen seventeen points every week while the offense
- 20:27Speaker 1: tries to figure things out. That is not a recipe
- 20:31Speaker 1: for success. But they have foundational pieces on that side
- 20:34Speaker 1: of the ball. On pick Vangio's side of the ball,
- 20:38Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, we talk about Zach bah and Jahad Campbell,
- 20:43Speaker 1: Quinna Mitchell Cooper, Dejen Drew mccooba, Red Blanket Ship. They
- 20:48Speaker 1: have the playmakers on that side, and they continue to
- 20:51Speaker 1: get better the more they play with each other. Some
- 20:53Speaker 1: I think last season the defense got off to a
- 20:56Speaker 1: slower start. You look at that the Saints game, you
- 20:59Speaker 1: look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, and it took
- 21:02Speaker 1: a while for them to get on the same page.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Really wasn't until Reed Blankenship was inserted as the starting
- 21:06Speaker 1: nickel that the defense started to round into shape and
- 21:11Speaker 1: find their way. But I think it's fair to say
- 21:14Speaker 1: that from week one they kind of hit hit that
- 21:19Speaker 1: ground running, and the offense needs to catch up because
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's a very disjointed team right now, and I think defensively,
- 21:27Speaker 1: their hallmark will be interior pressure. Jalen Carter, Moro, Jomo
- 21:34Speaker 1: Jordan Davis has gotten off to a nice start this year,
- 21:37Speaker 1: and dynamics second level play from Zach Bond and Jahad Campbell.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So you shouldn't have any cause for concern on the
- 21:44Speaker 1: defensive side, but always bear in mind that when you're
- 21:48Speaker 1: asking your defense to go out there for seventy snaps
- 21:52Speaker 1: and a lot of times it's a quick turnaround because
- 21:55Speaker 1: the offense can't really sustain much momentum for four quarters.
- 21:59Speaker 1: There'll be times in game, sure where they do, but
- 22:02Speaker 1: not for the entirety of a game. And when you're
- 22:03Speaker 1: asking your defense to continuously go back out there, you're
- 22:07Speaker 1: putting them in a bind and you're more susceptible to
- 22:11Speaker 1: allowing teams to move down the field a little bit
- 22:13Speaker 1: and you don't quite have that same resistance. So that's
- 22:16Speaker 1: sort of my temperature check right now on the Philadelphia
- 22:18Speaker 1: Eagles on the offensive side and the defensive side. Five
- 22:22Speaker 1: weeks into the season. Up next to the Eagles have
- 22:25Speaker 1: the new York Giants Thursday night. Will it be a
- 22:27Speaker 1: good get right spot? From where I'm sitting, it certainly
- 22:30Speaker 1: looks that way, But we'll see soon enough whether or
- 22:35Speaker 1: not they're able to piece it all together.
- 22:36Speaker 2: That's the great thing about football. Sooner or later we're
- 22:40Speaker 2: gonna learn. So that's gonna do it.
- 22:42Speaker 1: For this edition of The Checko Daily, I'm Andrew de
- 22:44Speaker 1: Checo and I will catch you on the next one.
