- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:28And if you can get your school to pay for a dedicated
- 0:31wheelchair coach, it'd be great because we had another
- 0:34wheelchair athlete years ago and was our head coach helping try
- 0:38to coach everybody and then helping a wheelchair athlete,
- 0:43you know, transferring equipment.
- 0:44From. High school to different wave
- 0:47meets and whatnot, being there for the athlete to help them out
- 0:51and whatnot. So.
- 0:52It's. Been great to have a dedicated
- 0:54person for. I did have that at the end, but
- 0:58thank you. I you know, I was talking to I
- 1:00met was last night for the first time and I had asked him that
- 1:04question. You know, do you think it's
- 1:05appropriate to have a dedicated person for the wheelchair track
- 1:12athlete? Right.
- 1:13And my initial thought for, I don't know, a decade, I've been
- 1:17thinking, no, why? Because we're extra special.
- 1:20We need somebody different. We should be a part of that
- 1:23team. You know, we're already used to
- 1:25being singled out. But Brian changed my
- 1:28perspective, which is really hard to do.
- 1:31I don't know if you know that. And he he said, well, you know,
- 1:35long jump has specialized coaches, you know, field has
- 1:38specialized coaches, the sprinters have specialized
- 1:41coaches. This is something different.
- 1:44And it was kind of like an aha moment for me.
- 1:47So I just thought I'd share that.
- 1:48Thank you. Can I have something in there?
- 1:50What's that? Can I add something?
- 1:52Yeah. I just finished coaching at that
- 1:55athlete and I'm the, I was the throws coach like I'm, I'm it.
- 2:00So I had like 12 kids. What I figured out right away is
- 2:04he throws a shot put. Somebody's got to go get it.
- 2:07Yeah. And I was the only one there
- 2:08that was me. So our district, I said, hey,
- 2:11can we hire a kid to be like? An assistant.
- 2:16So that, so then the kid had to be there 'cause they were
- 2:18getting paid. I don't know, we paid them like
- 2:20$500.00, but that kid was at practice every day.
- 2:23They learned how to help the kid get in and out.
- 2:27It was, and that worked really well for us.
- 2:29Oh, good, good. Speaking of field looks, OK,
- 2:33let's just quickly go through this.
- 2:35I don't know a lot about field, so if you have questions, please
- 2:37divert to somebody else. Look at this guy.
- 2:41Here maybe to this guy. No.
- 2:44This is a field chair. We only do shot in the WIAA.
- 2:50This pole can be used to help stabilize right.
- 2:53It can be switched to either side if they're left or
- 2:55right-handed. We use straps of any kind, even
- 2:59something as simple as like this strap I have on the back of my
- 3:01wheelchair to keep their legs down.
- 3:04They shouldn't be able to lift their legs off of the seated
- 3:07platform. Really encouraging your athletes
- 3:14to be able to strap themselves independently because if they're
- 3:18going to do a para meet, they cannot have help unless they're
- 3:22more severe disability such as a quadriplegic.
- 3:25So overtransfers. Too.
- 3:27Out of the chair hand strap. It or the?
- 3:30Chair correct if. You are a pair.
- 3:31It's a higher. It's quite a bit higher than
- 3:33your regular. Date chair so.
- 3:35Just so you know. Yeah, but.
- 3:38No, sorry. Foot plates are something that
- 3:42is can be really useful too. You know, it's hard to balance
- 3:44your feet on this little pole, so we almost always utilize a
- 3:48foot plate on these chairs. The chair can be positioned as
- 3:52close to the toll board as possible.
- 3:55I know this year was just told me last night that females are
- 3:58throwing a 3K and males are throwing a 4K.
- 4:00Let's see. You can also if during right
- 4:08there is just going to say. So, yeah, and I've heard stories
- 4:13of parents having to sit and hold down track or field chairs
- 4:16while they're throwing. So this is something I would
- 4:18definitely try to utilize some kind of portable platform that
- 4:23you can strap the OR the field chair down to.
- 4:27This one is a little bit different of a field chair, but
- 4:29I don't see why you couldn't do that with this.
- 4:31College actually or will be tomorrow what it has actually in
- 4:36their throat circle they have. What are those things called?
- 4:40Eye bolts. OK, eye bolts.
- 4:42So it's really nice you can. Grab right on with the ratchets,
- 4:46Yeah, Otherwise you're pounding steaks and and take a.
- 4:49Peach. Kind of my kid I built 4x4.
- 4:56It's your platform that fit in the shot.
- 5:00Put circle. And it was.
- 5:02And I had I bolts in all four corners so we could literally
- 5:05strap the chair to the platform outside, get it ready to go.
- 5:09My other throwers would lift it into the ring and then we could
- 5:13do it indoors. Yeah.
- 5:15Do you have a picture of it? I do on my.
- 5:18Phone. Yeah, that would be really neat.
- 5:19If you want to send it to me, I can pull it up on my computer.
- 5:27Yeah. Metal sledgehammers.
- 5:28Just trying to get this as stable as possible for them to
- 5:30throw on when if you do transition to outside of WIA,
- 5:37you are able to throw shot, discus and jab, which is really
- 5:40a neat option for the kids to know.
- 5:43Yeah. And then these are just
- 5:48different types. You know, you can I, I see a lot
- 5:51of forward facing field chairs. And again, I'm not a field
- 5:54coach, but I also see sometimes they'll tilt the chair at an
- 5:59angle so that the kids can actually get that rotation.
- 6:04And if you have a student in your school right now, WIAA does
- 6:09not, but let's say it's a quadriplegic or somebody that
- 6:11has a more severe disability. This is a club and I know WIAA
- 6:20years ago they will, they did allow, but again, this is for
- 6:25somebody that's more severe. This is a Paralympic sport too.
- 6:28So just you know, just FYI, that does exist.
- 6:31Throw it. Backwards.
- 6:33So they'll be looking. Opposite and throw it behind
- 6:36their head the club. So this is just a discus
- 6:41obviously, but we are not doing that and.
- 6:46And I would say those of you that are coaches, we have talked
- 6:49to WIAA, please continue. It's really sad that they can
- 6:55only do the shot put and they can't do the discus.
- 6:57So obviously I don't know who's got the decision making process,
- 7:01but really trying to get that to WIAA to get that discus.
- 7:05In and I think this is just really important to me, you
- 7:10know, not you're treated differently most of your life
- 7:13being somebody with a disability.
- 7:15So just try to remember that and treat them like you would treat
- 7:18any other athlete of yours. Again, we're all coaches, you
- 7:25know. Different ideas of why being
- 7:28part of the team matters, Amy. Can I change your name?
- 7:31Just shop with. One second, Yeah, Sorry.
- 7:34No, you're, I tend to fly over that because I yeah, I'm so
- 7:37sorry. So the only thing that is
- 7:39different, the mechanics don't change, but you have a bar that
- 7:42you can pull on. So if your athlete doesn't have
- 7:46a lot of core strength, they can lean back and then they can pull
- 7:49as they push. So you can get an extra foot or
- 7:53more because you're generating some momentum for an athlete
- 7:56that doesn't. So just remind them that that
- 7:58bar is there and they can use it.
- 8:00They don't have to. They don't get penalized if they
- 8:03don't, but it's not, it's not cheating to use it.
- 8:06So sometimes with new athletes, they need to realize that
- 8:08they're just trying to do this and this arm is staying still.
- 8:12So that's the move. Thank you.
- 8:15Anything else about field? 1700 think just looked at the
- 8:27website for that coach. But I have seen high schools
- 8:31build these, right? Yeah.
- 8:33So this is a very simple idea. Yeah, we have.
- 8:37One made out of PVC, 10 years illness but then donated to
- 8:44Paul's party again. Paul's party has been fantastic.
- 8:48You need anything, call them and they're big fundraisers in
- 8:52August, so. And.
- 8:54Equipment wise, I was. Going to say we all work
- 8:56together, you know, Dairyland, Great Lakes, the Paul's party.
- 9:00So it's really nice and we all have cell phone numbers.
- 9:04And so, you know, once you're part of this community, even if
- 9:08you're out of meet, it's not unusual to get a call or a text.
- 9:13And please text me if you're getting equipment, well track
- 9:17equipment, please text me. I've seen a lot of chairs that
- 9:20were ordered that just little things are off for the athlete,
- 9:24like the size of the ring, right?
- 9:26Or the length of the chair. Not everybody had my chairs
- 9:29pretty long. I'm about 510.
- 9:31So you know that is the length is because my arms are so long,
- 9:35right? But somebody who's maybe 5-3
- 9:38wouldn't want a chair that's this long.
- 9:40So just I'm always available. Please just shoot me a text and
- 9:44it's free. And we've got Steve is up in
- 9:46point and so we've got. People somewhere where we. 5
- 9:52more minutes. Yeah, OK.
- 9:53What are the contested track races?
- 9:55Is it 148? Is it 16 or 15169?
- 9:59Or 16. So it's 16 at the high school
- 10:03and 15 at para, which makes no sense but.
- 10:07So one thing that I really think is neat is there are collegiate
- 10:11programs for track, wheelchair track, and not everybody knows
- 10:15that. So giving these kids that
- 10:18opportunity to even hear about that scholarship opportunities,
- 10:23continuing on with a program outside of high school that can
- 10:26really help their grades too, right?
- 10:29Give them more of a reason to want to do better in school.
- 10:34And this is one of ours that just signed at University of
- 10:37Illinois this past year. And we coached her this country.
- 10:40She's up in northern North Dakota, so very, very rural.
- 10:45And so Amy, if you want to touch on rollers really quick.
- 10:50Yep. So these are rollers.
- 10:55They're not all. This is the kind of roller you
- 10:57should get right here. That big cylinder in the back,
- 11:00it creates momentum. These tiny little ones over here
- 11:03are fine for maybe a warm up at a track, but these are for
- 11:07training. You don't.
- 11:09If you don't have that momentum from the big cylinder kind of
- 11:12propelling you along, you stay stuck in that short, choppy
- 11:16stroke and then you're learning that behavior and it transitions
- 11:19onto the track. You don't want that.
- 11:21These are roughly $1000 I want to say, and what we do, oh,
- 11:29we'll see. We already talked about more
- 11:30coaching staff necessary. We talked about that a little
- 11:33bit. Busing and hotel accessibility.
- 11:37We'll come back to. I just want to say with these
- 11:41rollers, I do, and I've had coaches just jump on and kind of
- 11:45see what we do. On Mondays at six, PMI host a
- 11:49live Zoom workout where people can log in from all.
- 11:53We have people from New York to we've had California on Texas
- 11:58bought all over the country and they jump on and we all do a
- 12:01workout together that I lead and just kind of chat about issues,
- 12:07problems. What gloves are working for you?
- 12:09How do I change this? And especially if you're pushing
- 12:14by yourself, I think that's really important to be able to
- 12:16have some kind of connection there, yes.
- 12:20If anybody's interested in purchasing a trainer like that,
- 12:25we have one that is collecting dust that was used about 3
- 12:27times. Awesome give.
- 12:29You an incredible deal. Did you did you get that to
- 12:33'cause I remember you guys had such trouble getting it to work.
- 12:36We. Did not OK, but my kid was a
- 12:40thrower who raced for something else to do, so his tires were
- 12:44about this far. From the edge of I remember
- 12:46seeing the video, yeah. Yeah.
- 12:49And we just never really took time to fine tune it.
- 12:52That probably would have fixed it.
- 12:54That's another issue you run into is the camber.
- 12:56People don't know what to order for the camber of the chairs.
- 12:59There's a lot of technical things, so these are places
- 13:04where you can get equipment. I think this is really important
- 13:06too. Again, more.
- 13:23And this was just a video I thought was neat.
- 13:25But we do not have to watch that.
- 13:27Don't drive us, you have. 1. Minute I I wanna open for
- 13:34questions if there's anything, unless people have already been
- 13:38kind of saying them as it comes along or any questions, I'm just
- 13:42calling. Up here too, so feel free to
- 13:45look not look if not sports and spokes.
- 13:50It's a magazine that's both online and paper, but it also
- 13:54has other opportunities. It also talks about with Movie
- 13:58United, other meets, other pair of meets and Wisconsin.
- 14:04You can attend 2 non WIAA meats. You can do Dairyland, you can
- 14:08Great Great Lakes. And what's fun about the bigger
- 14:11pair of meats is it really gives the kids an opportunity to
- 14:15compete against other kids with disabilities and then includes
- 14:19our ambulatory and our amputees. If you really want something to
- 14:24fall asleep with, this is our rules and we best practices.
- 14:31We really try even at the junior high high school to have the
- 14:35kids practicing the the the right rules.
- 14:38So if they do move up, you know they're it's best practices
- 14:43already. And, and we'd love to help.
- 14:46I mean, that's just something that I kind of forgot it that I
- 14:48had on there. But you know us at GLASA because
- 14:52we do reach out to such a big area.
- 14:55Please utilize us, you know, find out if there's a program in
- 14:58your area too with some kind of expert.
- 15:01But with us, you have that. And we, Cindy established Glass
- 15:06when, I don't know, 30 years ago, something like that.
- 15:10There's a long history there. And we have access to a lot of
- 15:15knowledgeable people that if we don't know the answer to, we can
- 15:17find somebody who can if. You have competitive athletes.
- 15:22We also are a path when they have the international teams.
- 15:26And we also work with USATF, Para for the high school,
- 15:31Paralympic, All American. So you may have a student who's
- 15:36at state and you know, they've got times, you know, feel free
- 15:41to reach. Out to Johnny is a high school,
- 15:42and he's a good one. Feel free to reach out to us
- 15:45and, you know, we'll look that standard up.
- 15:47And we just had a new athlete who reached out and I'm like,
- 15:50wait, what are you throwing? And when she told me what she
- 15:52was throwing, I'm like, Hey, you met standards for, you know,
- 15:55high school para, you know, all American and, you know, also
- 16:00introductions to the, you know, to the college coaches.
- 16:03So. And then it also, you know, we
- 16:05really encourage athletes giving back.
- 16:07You know, once you've gone through our program, a lot of
- 16:10them will come back to practices and help mentor the younger
- 16:12athletes. And I think that's important,
- 16:14too. What's the process to?
- 16:18Sign your athlete up for a meet. You it's a meet coming up next
- 16:25week at random life or something.
- 16:27You, you notify them when you're registering your team that you
- 16:32have a wheelchair athlete that's competing in XY and Z events and
- 16:36they'll add it to the heat sheet and the schedule and everything
- 16:39like. That Yep, you got to contact
- 16:41them, you know, give them plenty of time, but contact them, you
- 16:45know the events and. Is it typically like there's
- 16:49only one or maybe 2 athletes that have raced outside of
- 16:53state? Is it JB or varsity?
- 16:55I mean, is it? Does it matter?
- 16:58Or. They all go at once.
- 17:00Usually it's going to be maybe one person, other athlete there.
- 17:04A lot of times they're racing by themselves.
- 17:07We've at times contacted other schools with racers and have had
- 17:12them just come to a meet or we would just take our athlete
- 17:16there to their meet just to be able to race against somebody.
- 17:21But yeah, just contact. But it could be.
- 17:22AJV or a varsity meet? Or is it typically a varsity
- 17:25only or? Either way, like if it's a GJV,
- 17:29meet, varsity, whatever I mean. I can tell you there's a girl,
- 17:34there's a sophomore out of Kenosha that would we'd love to
- 17:39get competition for. We didn't by grade just so
- 17:43Gianni could go travel with his classmates.
- 17:45So he competed at some baby meets even though he is
- 17:49phenomenal, but I wanted him to travel with the freshmen.
- 17:53That's a good idea to have. His friends rather than being
- 17:56alone with a bunch of seniors he didn't know.
- 17:57That didn't make any sense to me.
- 17:59So I progressed him by grade, and I know that's what a couple
- 18:03other coaches in our conference have done is that junior and
- 18:06senior year they typically go to the varsity meets.
- 18:09But my sophomore year he had a cousin on the varsity team.
- 18:11He wanted to go with varsity his freshman year.
- 18:13I did have him go to mostly the baby meets, so he was at his own
- 18:16age. OK, good to know.
- 18:18Do their results add into the team score at all?
- 18:21No. No, no it doesn't.
- 18:22Impact the. Team.
- 18:23Score and often JD meets get done a little faster, so they're
- 18:26a little upset about adding an extra heat and get the kids home
- 18:30sooner for homework. And because if I don't contact
- 18:35$40 in advance, I might have his entry denied.
- 18:40Thank you. Good point all.
- 18:41The meets are exhibition until State.
- 18:44State was really the only. I thought you had to go to.
- 18:48Yeah, but as far as what? Points.
- 18:52Oh yeah, yeah, you. Have to.
- 18:55Do 4-4 meets. And sectionals.
- 18:59Which is something that I'd like to see changed.
- 19:03If you guys think this is 2, please talk to your athletic
- 19:06directors or connections, but I think Wisconsin should have
- 19:09standards for. Wheelchair track?
- 19:11Do you want to explain what that is?
- 19:12I think, you know, just some kind of goal for them to aim
- 19:18for. You know, whether that's a
- 19:19minute, 100 meter, you should be able to do 100 meters in a
- 19:23minute, right? It doesn't have to be something
- 19:27unreachable, but I think setting a standard and a goal for these
- 19:31kids makes state a more exciting thing that they reach, right,
- 19:36Not just showing up. And I made it to state, you
- 19:38know, my son wanted to go to state at track.
- 19:40Did he go? No, you know, so it's just to
- 19:43be. Clear, like right now they do
- 19:45their fur meets, they show up to the sectional and compete and
- 19:48then they're like. Inch yes, yeah.
- 19:50So. You're like by standard, you're
- 19:52like, They would have some. Kind of time, time standard,
- 19:55yes, thank you and I don't think.
- 19:57We'll get to that number, but if there's. 12 boys competing in
- 20:04the mile at sectionals throughout the state.
- 20:07They take the sectional winners and then the top 10.
- 20:10Total this year, which? Is a little.
- 20:12Bit closer to what it's like for your.
- 20:15Yeah, yeah, 'cause. I think last year what was
- 20:17there, 3 or 4? Heats of 100 boys, you know.
- 20:21And. So it's like.
- 20:23Yeah, right. No other event has four heats
- 20:26that stayed right. Correct.
- 20:29So just something to think about and something I'd like to see
- 20:32happen, you know? Another thing that's interesting
- 20:35is they have you declare your events a bit before regionals,
- 20:39and I've kind of fought them on that because with where Gianni's
- 20:42at in this training progression. Sometimes.
- 20:45We haven't made that call and why should I have to declare
- 20:48what he's going to raise two weeks before my able bodied
- 20:52athletes? I need to actually.
- 20:53Like interesting. Yeah.
- 20:55Or I can decide which races he's going after because he's.
- 20:59Got 2 state. Records like he has goals, but
- 21:01if he's like as we're trying to juggle, what does?
- 21:04That look like. We're not ready two weeks before
- 21:08regionals to make that call because we haven't had all the
- 21:11training runs we're going to have yet.
- 21:13And so I've kind of battled the WI on that deadline of
- 21:17absolutely not. I just no, just don't
- 21:19personalize as metals because that's the argument is they have
- 21:22to personalize. The metal.
- 21:23It has to get. To the printer I said fine he
- 21:25gets blank metals. I will pick when the able bodied
- 21:28athletes pick. You know, thank you for that
- 21:31perspective. No.
- 21:32While we do have one of the highest wheelchair athlete
- 21:36numbers in Wisconsin in the country, there's still stuff we
- 21:39have to work on for sure. So.
- 21:42If you're in that. Position they.
- 21:43Will let you just pack later. It's so it's it's 4 needs.
- 21:47It doesn't have to be a specific event.
- 21:50OK. Do you think having a standard
- 21:52would help with that that issue where like the kids have to
- 21:55qualify quote UN quote at the sectional meet and make it to
- 21:58state would help with like that two week issue that you're
- 22:01having or no? But I still wouldn't know what I
- 22:04was entering in the in at sectional.
- 22:05That's my argument because I don't know if we're going to get
- 22:08the start squared up enough that I want it in the 100.
- 22:11It's like, I don't know, got it. And it's not a sprinter, so.
- 22:16Everybody thinks they're gonna be a sprinter, and then yeah,
- 22:19no, it's the easiest. It's the easiest one to do right
- 22:22off the jump. I get it.
- 22:24But. It also drives me crazy when
- 22:27they put those top 10 posters out in the lobby and they never
- 22:31put the wheelchair athletes. Out there.
- 22:34If there were only like I was looking for two kids that did it
- 22:37fine. But like you said at state,
- 22:38there's how many kids doing 100? Yeah, make it the top three
- 22:41then, or. Something but.
- 22:46Yeah. And I would just say as coaches,
- 22:48if you do have students in your school and I've got it paper
- 22:53that are ambulatory, you know, again, we're trying to get if
- 22:57those kids, we're trying to get them to state based on
- 23:00standards. So if you got somebody that's
- 23:02an, you know, amputation or something, please reach out to
- 23:05those parents. And because enough people are
- 23:08heard, hopefully we can get those standards.
- 23:10And there's a lot of states with best practice standards that we
- 23:16have access to. So we would not be, this is not
- 23:19time consuming. We would not be starting
- 23:21something from scratch. There's there's a lot of
- 23:24information out there, so. And then just one more quick
- 23:27thing there, the WI, I know Cindy mentioned this at the
- 23:31beginning, allows your athletes to compete in two non WIAA track
- 23:36meets during the season. And there's one that's coming up
- 23:38in May at here in Madison area. And then we do one too state
- 23:45weekend though. But yeah, but but definitely
- 23:50check it out. And even if your athlete doesn't
- 23:52want to compete in it and you're close, come look and see what
- 23:55it's about, you know? Yeah, and there is a there's a
- 23:58big me in July. It's through Move United.
- 24:00It's in Grand Rapids, so you can drive that.
- 24:02I know I saw your athlete through there last year, but
- 24:06it's really, it's a full week of clinics, competitions,
- 24:11camaraderie and it's, you know, if they're looking for more
- 24:15opportunities, it's great. So and they also have swimming,
- 24:18archery, powerlifting and a whole week of various sports.
- 24:22For Megan did tennis this year at her high school.
- 24:26Tennis. Come on.
- 24:28Shore clinics on Thursday night. Close a month, they haven't seen
- 24:30her out. There, she needs more practice.
- 24:32We got Jeff's really good. He's been playing with her
- 24:35tennis for like 12 years, so you could teach her.
- 24:38Yeah, he's off. She.
- 24:39Just likes to go out their way all around.
- 24:40That's perfect. Although never mind, she should
- 24:43stick to track. Obviously I'm joking, but all
- 24:52right. Anything else?
- 24:56Great. I can.
- 24:58Yeah. It's on Google, So just.
- 25:01Yeah, I have Google Slides. No, I didn't.
- 25:05I wanted to do that like do you want?
- 25:07No. Do you want to just shoot me
- 25:09your e-mail and come out or and I'll just e-mail it to you?
- 25:12I think I have yours. I don't know.
- 25:14OK. OK, So I mean, I know you.
- 25:15Work OK, OK. And I know the Hall's party.
- 25:22People that they're in. A little bit, you know, just to
- 25:25make sure. Like.
- 25:27She'll take a look at the city. Because that's.
- 25:30Something I'll try to use well, but and I just talked to them
- 25:33yesterday and it said we're. Happy.
- 25:34Yeah, so. All of that so because.
- 25:39Her. Tandems are that's.
- 25:44Whatever. So we just, we follow their
- 25:46schedule, we do their workout. We feel like she could handle a
- 25:49little bit more on that day. We push her a little bit more.
- 25:53You know, I'm just trying to plan out, you know, more of a
- 25:56throwing day, you know, lifting and all that other stuff.
- 25:59So we, we're in the weight room, you know, two to three times a
- 26:04week. You know, they're only with an
- 26:06upper body. So we're not going to be in
- 26:07there every day. But yeah, yeah.
- 26:10Yeah, We just kind of do what the other efforts we have, you
- 26:15know, recovery days, lactic days, whatever, all that.
- 26:18I will set that up. I just follow the program that
- 26:21they set with our workouts. This is a sample of one of mine
- 26:25that I do and I just, I always do that 10 minute warm up, but
- 26:32the athletes should be out there starting slow and increasing
- 26:34their pace. Typically it's about two miles
- 26:36for most of our athletes, but the younger ones, 10 minutes,
- 26:39they might only get 2 laps in, you know, but they're using that
- 26:43same amount of time. So not sure if that's helpful.
- 26:47I. Think parallel it, it doesn't
- 26:49have to be the same, right? Like 'cause sometimes it's just,
- 26:52oh, they're going to be on the turf running this and that.
- 26:55It's like, well, OK, now we have to make something that's
- 26:57parallel. Maybe you're going to work on
- 26:58start. Yeah, no, I mean it's, I mean it
- 27:01worked. OK, last.
- 27:02Year and ours is. Tricky because we share with our
- 27:04school on track. And.
- 27:06It's like it's it's. Like.
- 27:11As a new. Coach, I'm like, what's?
- 27:12Going on here. This might be dumb, so we get
- 27:17his chair out. And if it's.
- 27:19Windy that thing like blows away.
- 27:21Can I just put like my? Weighted backpack.
- 27:26Yeah, thank you. Good.
- 27:28Yeah, weighted backpack is better.
- 27:30One thing I noticed is everybody pulls them around like this.
- 27:34Yeah, yes, yeah, Don't, don't. So everybody pulls the chairs,
- 27:40they'll pull it up like this and they'll walk with it up like
- 27:42this and the wheels will start shaking.
- 27:45It ruins the camber. Keep it low.
- 27:48I mean, picking it up like to here and pulling it fine.
- 27:51Otherwise, just push it. Don't let the And then you got
- 27:54to mess around with the lineman again and all this and the kids
- 27:57are like, my compensator doesn't work.
- 27:58No, your wheels aren't aligned anymore.
- 28:00So just be very careful with that.
- 28:02These are very touchy, but throwing a backpack in there is
- 28:05fine. I know I was talking to, I think
- 28:08it was you about, you know, different techniques for starts.
- 28:12You know, you see kids like, I don't think you do that in high
- 28:14school, but running with parachutes kind of stuff.
- 28:16If they need more of that with weighted stuff, what I'll do is
- 28:19I'll go back here. Then I can really see where
- 28:21they're hitting and I make them pull me.
- 28:24Yeah, somebody can can do that. Or I've I've had athletes, which
- 28:34is the best thing you can do because then you're adding
- 28:36resistance. Till their start if.
- 28:38There's a small hill, have them get on that hill and push that
- 28:41really recreates the same muscles they're going to be
- 28:43using during that start stroke. I've had kids who put chains on
- 28:48and pulled tires down the straight away, you know, on the
- 28:51paved part. So we had.
- 28:55A spring coach who we like put the spring.
- 28:58Coach behind him and just bungee, yeah.
- 28:59And. Coach would what was jogging?
- 29:03With him. But he was calling anything you,
- 29:05you know, just be creative. Yeah.
- 29:12And then when they're giving a presentation in 20 years, they
- 29:14can tell funny stories about you, Amy.
- 29:19Tire pressure recommendation. It's normally written on the
- 29:22side of the tires, Yeah, but about you, you want them to be
- 29:26almost to to full, right? Maybe 510 lbs, especially if
- 29:30they're just pushing on a track. You're doing a road race, you
- 29:32know, just maybe not that hard. And they're going to be
- 29:35different types of tires. There are track tires, there are
- 29:37Rd. racing tires. Just kind of take a look at what
- 29:41you think your athlete needs and go from there.
- 29:44If you do need rims changing, he's an expert, but it's not.
- 29:48The easiest job I'll. Just say these it's wear down
- 29:52those. Rims are what you want.
- 29:54When she said that, that means this part you'll see wear and
- 29:57tear on them. This is literally just a metal
- 29:59ring with tire coating on it. So the more and more they push
- 30:03on there, the more this is going to wear down.
- 30:04And you'll have to change that out.
- 30:06It's really tedious and time. Yeah, but I don't want to do it
- 30:11for you. But I'll tell you how to do it.
- 30:12Here we go. So yeah, it's it's intense.
- 30:21And I'd say typically I only really see that needing to be
- 30:24changed every few seasons unless you're a marathon runner.
- 30:32There are some fun opportunities though, aside from, you know,
- 30:36like the Dairyland Great Light Games.
- 30:38We take a group of athletes to fast cow and champagne, which is
- 30:44really cool because I get to be on the track with the
- 30:46Paralympians. So that's really fun.
- 30:49There's they have a track camp. So again, if you have athletes
- 30:53and they're very, very welcoming.
- 30:55So there are the elite, but it's also fun for those that maybe
- 30:59are not at that level and a lot of peer mentoring.
- 31:01And so feel free to reach out to us on that.
- 31:05So, OK, that's it you guys. Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here.
