- 0:28Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:30I'm your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is your girl, Michelle, from the Empowerment
- 0:35Divas Network.
- 0:36Welcome to the show, Michelle.
- 0:38I should say my girl, Michelle.
- 0:39That's my girl.
- 0:41That's my friend.
- 0:42Hello, everyone.
- 0:43How are you?
- 0:46Oh, we are so good today.
- 0:49It's, yeah.
- 0:50Winter is definitely settling in.
- 0:52We got the freezing rain in Eastern South Dakota today.
- 0:55I'm sure across the Midwest, it's much of the same lately as we head into the holiday season.
- 1:02But, before we get too far into everything that we're both up to now and all the great things
- 1:07that we have to share, I wanna give you an opportunity to just, share with our listeners a
- 1:12little bit about your backstory, how you built the Empowerment Divas Network, and and then
- 1:17we'll get into all the good stuff.
- 1:20Okay.
- 1:21Great.
- 1:22So we started in PowerMedivas Network in 2017, and the goal was to create a platform for women
- 1:30owned businesses.
- 1:32We did a lot we did a lot of research in Ohio and Michigan and realized there wasn't really a
- 1:40big platform for those local artists and businesses.
- 1:44So as we continued on, we realized that we couldn't leave out the guys.
- 1:50Okay?
- 1:50So 2019, we decided that, you know, we'll focus on every business.
- 1:56'20 the end of 2019, 2020, we started talking, and we realized that a lot of local artists
- 2:03still needed a nice platform.
- 2:06So we started interviewing a lot of artists, a lot of authors, and things like that to come on
- 2:12our show.
- 2:13And then at that time, we were partnered with a couple different radio stations globally.
- 2:20And in '23, we decided to open up our own Roku channel.
- 2:25So if you go to EDN or Roku, you definitely will find a Parmadiva's network.
- 2:33So cool.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34And that's really where all of this is heading.
- 2:36I don't know if people really know as, legacy media as we call it.
- 2:41Like, the terrestrial radio and TV stations, because of their power suck on you know, just
- 2:48to have a a station that's broadcasting to that, because of the extreme cost of that and
- 2:53the lack of revenue that they're turning over, they are slowly fading away.
- 2:57And it's why they're owned by a conglomerate, you know, a Clear Channel or an iHeartRadio is
- 3:03buying up all the TV stations.
- 3:05But, eventually, they're just going to start as these towers deteriorate or the satellites need
- 3:10to be replaced, that they just won't do it.
- 3:12And all the data will be available on these fast streaming networks.
- 3:15So you are really ahead of the curve on getting into there, occupying your space, and building
- 3:21a platform in that arena.
- 3:23So kudos to you.
- 3:24You're you you beat me to the punch by a couple of years.
- 3:29Unfortunately, I beat myself to a couple of things.
- 3:34And, you know but I think it's just because when I do research, I do it thoroughly.
- 3:39I might find, you know, deals and specials and stuff.
- 3:42And so I try to be different, from the average person.
- 3:47You know?
- 3:48So that's that's where the the competition you know, everybody's in competition.
- 3:52I am not in competition with anyone because, apparently, I am in competition with myself
- 3:58trying to make sure that I continue on bettering, the brand.
- 4:04No.
- 4:05And you are different because not everyone has that servant's heart to serve their community,
- 4:11whether that community is, you know, black female business owners or just female business
- 4:17owners or just business owners and then, you know, expanding out.
- 4:21And it feels like, you know, you started with a very niche idea and then realized that, like,
- 4:27everyone needs this.
- 4:28Artists, musicians, like, everyone needs a platform to come and talk about their
- 4:33businesses and to, you know, to be able to bring in new clients to just share their story.
- 4:39And not a lot of people out there are willing to do that for someone else.
- 4:44Right?
- 4:45And I think especially in the podcasting artist communities that a lot of it is kind of a look
- 4:53at me industry, and there's very few people that are out there going, no.
- 4:58No.
- 4:58No.
- 4:58Look at you.
- 4:59Look at what you're doing.
- 5:00That's so impressive.
- 5:01So I absolutely adore that.
- 5:03I thank you for having me on EDN, even though we're gonna have to redo our episode over
- 5:09again.
- 5:10I had such a great conversation with you getting to know you and everything that you've
- 5:15been doing.
- 5:16I would be honored to come on again and again and again until we get it perfect, to share
- 5:22with the world.
- 5:23So I couldn't let
- 5:24you back up.
- 5:25I'm definitely thankful, you know, to have met you.
- 5:30And this is, I guess you know, I don't I haven't throughout the years, I haven't had a
- 5:35lot of time to fully network in person.
- 5:39A lot of times, I've missed a lot of events, but I've met so many people on, you know, the
- 5:47Internet and just kinda, like, advertising media and, you know, different things like
- 5:53that.
- 5:54So I am appreciative that I have not only found people in Ohio, but I found people globally.
- 6:03So this is truly amazing.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:06I know the Internet can be a total cesspool, but also there's a lot of really good people
- 6:12out there, and it takes a little bit more to find them.
- 6:15And most of us have rather small platforms, not a lot of people that are willing to shine a
- 6:21light on other small businesses and people with, you know, small or no platform.
- 6:26We're not doing it for the fame.
- 6:28We're not doing it to be famous ourselves.
- 6:30We're doing it because every single person that is that watches and finds one of our friends or
- 6:37guests on the show is one person that they may not have met.
- 6:41And each person has the ability to change another's life.
- 6:46And and I say it on my podcast all the time that if if this conversation only changes one
- 6:52life and that life is mine, well, then it was successful regardless of how many views it
- 6:58gets.
- 7:00Definitely.
- 7:01Definitely.
- 7:02There's been times where, you know, we would have events and I didn't get to that many
- 7:08people out.
- 7:09But the ones that came out were, like, you know, very happy and excited to learn more
- 7:15about what we're doing.
- 7:17And so I'm really excited because we got a new event coming up in March, the Midwest Talent
- 7:22Awards.
- 7:23And we got a a couple new hosts, and so we're kinda trying to get them solid.
- 7:29And then after that, we're gonna interview them, and they can start telling people, hey.
- 7:34You know, join us.
- 7:37We're gonna do, I'm a tell you just a little snippet, but we're gonna host a telethon here
- 7:44in Toledo, and we're gonna try to do one in Detroit.
- 7:48But the goal is is that any event that you see, we always give a percentage back to the youth
- 7:54and the families.
- 7:55So it's not just about, you know, okay.
- 7:59I'm a get rich or paid off of this, but it's it's definitely helping to impact somebody else
- 8:06again.
- 8:07So
- 8:09Yes.
- 8:10And you said it.
- 8:11It to me, it's not about numbers at all.
- 8:13I don't measure my success in any kind of numbers.
- 8:17Would I like this to be something that provides financial stability for my wife and family in
- 8:23the future?
- 8:24Sure.
- 8:24But I'm willing to put in a lot of work, before that and to make a great impact before that as
- 8:30well.
- 8:31As you can see behind me, Operation Combating Veteran Suicide is a nonprofit that we work
- 8:36very closely with.
- 8:37And for that purpose, that we don't measure our impact in numbers, we measure it in lives
- 8:43changed.
- 8:44And that is why I was so grateful to you being on your show and and to see just what you were
- 8:51doing, supporting artists, supporting businesses, supporting families.
- 8:55There's so much that you're doing, and your impact on your world is felt and will be felt
- 9:01for generations.
- 9:02And even if you don't live to see that that and even if they don't remember your name, that
- 9:08impact will remain the same.
- 9:10And I think that's way more important.
- 9:11That's a legacy.
- 9:12And I think that's what, really motivates me to continue doing what I'm doing, and I'm sure it
- 9:18has to be a lot of the same for you as well.
- 9:21Yes.
- 9:22Generational wealth, you know, they say that's big.
- 9:27But I definitely want, you know because I, obviously, I'm running three businesses at one
- 9:32time.
- 9:33And I and I put a business in my son's name, and the goal for that is agriculture.
- 9:40So agriculture, cut you know, cutting grass, snow removal, things like that.
- 9:45So my thing is I wanna prepare these children of mine to be set up, but then offer programs
- 9:54for other children so they'll be set up and prepared and have goals lined up.
- 10:00These kids nowadays don't even know what they wanna do.
- 10:04And so if they come this way, oh, by the time they leave, wow.
- 10:08Well, we got a whole goal plan now.
- 10:11And I have some resources for you.
- 10:14So that's my impact.
- 10:15That is what I focus on.
- 10:18But you but you definitely gotta keep going as far as podcasting and things like that.
- 10:23Because when we first started, we were only getting, you know, maybe a few 100 or less
- 10:29views.
- 10:30But then when I started reaching out to these different radio stations and partnering, the
- 10:35highest amount of listeners I've had throughout the years was 8,000,000
- 10:39listeners.
- 10:41Incredible.
- 10:45So you definitely gotta keep going.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:48And we're just, we're planning a big national tour right now.
- 10:52I think it was after I got off the phone with you that I was like, yeah.
- 10:55Maybe I do have to travel a little bit.
- 10:57And, so we're going out and hitting some award shows and, going down to Austin for South by
- 11:03Southwest, teaming up with a young lady named Ellie Arnold who's just beginning her music
- 11:09career and, taking her out on the road.
- 11:12And and the whole goal is she's beginning as the opening act, but by the end of this tour,
- 11:16she's gonna be the headline.
- 11:18Right?
- 11:18Like, she is going to be the story.
- 11:20And to watch her grow and to, elevate to that role, because it's not about me.
- 11:26It's not about what I can do.
- 11:28Like, I I just don't I don't wanna say that I don't care because I care, but I don't have to
- 11:33be the star of the show to be, to be impactful.
- 11:38And and I have no problem being a sideshow, which I've probably been most of my life
- 11:43without knowing it.
- 11:44And to to be one who facilitates these things behind the scenes, you know, booking venues and
- 11:52making sure that sponsor support is there to do these projects and to make sure that the impact
- 11:57is felt.
- 11:58So, yeah, maybe we'll be looking for some more radio stations to share our stuff with and get
- 12:03our get our message out there into the wider world.
- 12:07I got plenty of interviews they could go back and siphon through to to go out.
- 12:11And, you know, we have our own Internet radio station as well, and it was kinda just like
- 12:15occupying all the space.
- 12:17Right?
- 12:17Getting out there, occupying the space, and then we'll kinda figure it out later as we go
- 12:22along.
- 12:22So let's talk more about the the award show.
- 12:25I know you're just kind of in the beginning phases of it right now, but why?
- 12:30What was kind of your inspiration for starting an award show?
- 12:35Well, last year, you know well, I'm a I'm a tell you this first.
- 12:40So, normally, every year, we host the Savvy Music event, and that event is locally whether
- 12:47it's Toledo or Detroit.
- 12:49And the goal for that event was to get all the different local artists together for one night
- 12:54for to support a cause.
- 12:57And so at the end of that event, a percentage of the proceeds goes to youth interested in
- 13:02arts, media, and and things of the line of that nature.
- 13:05And so we've done that, you know, for years.
- 13:08And then 2020, we, broadcast the, Savvy Music tour.
- 13:16Okay?
- 13:17I have 40 artists that signed up.
- 13:19We were going to 35 cities, but we all know what happened in 2020.
- 13:24So I had paid for all these different venues.
- 13:28The artists paid me, and I had to, you know, pay all these artists get these these artists a
- 13:33refund because it was COVID, and nothing was really open.
- 13:37And I was like, no.
- 13:38We're not going out there.
- 13:40In 2020, it was barely mask available.
- 13:43You know?
- 13:44I'm like, no.
- 13:45We're not going out there.
- 13:46So the goal is for, like, '26, '20 well, '27, I'm a say, that we're gonna propose to do a
- 13:53tour.
- 13:54But the Midwest Talent Awards was something where, okay, not only are we focusing on Ohio,
- 14:00but we're focusing on the whole entire Midwest, getting the whole entire Midwest together,
- 14:06different artists, nonprofits.
- 14:08So right now on my roster, we're because we're preparing to do a I have my staff working, and
- 14:16I had did the research on, like, all these different nonprofits.
- 14:20Right?
- 14:20And so we were talking about it, and they they were like, well, how many did you find in the
- 14:24Midwest?
- 14:25I said, well, aligned with what we're doing, you know, arts and music and things like that,
- 14:29it's about 2,000.
- 14:31And they were like, 2,000?
- 14:32Are you gonna reach out to 2,000 by Monday?
- 14:35I'm like, yes.
- 14:35Yes.
- 14:36We're gonna reach out to them by Monday.
- 14:38So that's our goal.
- 14:39So by Monday, I'll be here, you know, kinda invited them to our event, asking them to be a
- 14:45vendor or a sponsor and things like that.
- 14:47But we also have a lot of different artists that we've already worked with and that we've
- 14:53been looking at.
- 14:54And so these artists know about what we're doing, and it's just real and it's, like, real
- 14:59empowering to bring the entire Midwest together.
- 15:03When I googled Midwest Talent Awards, it didn't even pop up.
- 15:07Matter of fact, the only thing that popped up was, like, country.
- 15:12And I was like, well, okay.
- 15:15So so let's include Midwest Talent Awards because it's for the artists.
- 15:22We're going to reach out to some dance teams, the coaches, things like that.
- 15:27And then also you have those poets.
- 15:30You have those nonprofits who deserve, you know, some type of an award for being the best
- 15:36in their area.
- 15:37So that's what we're aiming towards.
- 15:39I'm really excited.
- 15:41And, you know, I was talking to my partner.
- 15:43She she's like, hey.
- 15:43It's almost March.
- 15:44I'm like, I know.
- 15:45Let's get, you know, let's get going.
- 15:47So we went down to to see we chose a hotel, and, you know, we went down to see it, the
- 15:55Westin in Southfield, and we were so amazed, and it's so beautiful and nice.
- 16:00It didn't even look like we were in Michigan.
- 16:02It looked like we were somewhere else.
- 16:04And so I was like, yes.
- 16:05This is it.
- 16:06You know, I'm looking at the price.
- 16:08Okay.
- 16:08Well, that's fine.
- 16:09But it really inspires me to, you know, be able to offer something this big and have a lot of
- 16:17backups, you know, people helping me along the way because I definitely couldn't do it by
- 16:22myself.
- 16:23So No.
- 16:25It takes a team, especially to achieve something that large.
- 16:28Now for me, I kinda run the podcast by myself, and I'm able to travel and do a lot of things
- 16:33solo.
- 16:34But there there's other pieces behind the scene that make this network.
- 16:37And when I wanted to expand into more shows and just more content, there's only so many hours
- 16:43in the day.
- 16:43And you can use all the AI that you want to and be as efficient as possible, and you're still
- 16:48gonna run out of time.
- 16:50So I know the importance of a great team.
- 16:53We've got a good one here.
- 16:54You have an amazing one there, obviously.
- 16:56Do you have a date picked out?
- 16:58I know you've said March a couple of times, but is there a solid date for the award show right
- 17:02now?
- 17:03March 6 through the eighth, that whole entire weekend.
- 17:08We're gonna have different workshops.
- 17:11We're gonna have the award ceremony that Saturday.
- 17:15We're gonna have a brunch.
- 17:17So we got it all mapped out.
- 17:18And like I said, we're preparing the website is actually live, www.midwesttalentawards.com,
- 17:26where people can go and they could cast their votes on who they feel is the, you know, the
- 17:32top artists.
- 17:33They have a different categories listed.
- 17:35And then, you know, towards, I'm a say, February probably the February, we're gonna
- 17:43review everything that was casted in, and then we're gonna reach out to the ones that, you
- 17:49know, we feel deserving because, obviously, it's not about popularity or things like that.
- 17:55It's more about who's consistent.
- 17:58You know, who is maybe who is doing stuff in the community, who has been, you know, out
- 18:06there with a a music video and is, you know, attracting a lot of people.
- 18:11But the goal is is not just popularity.
- 18:14It goes it's a different It's a whole outline of aspects that we're looking at to make sure
- 18:20that we choose the the best people.
- 18:24Just awesome.
- 18:25So you have three days.
- 18:27So there's a lot going on here.
- 18:28Let's kinda dig in a little bit to the awards, and and it's more than just an award show,
- 18:33obviously.
- 18:33You're educating.
- 18:34You're you're kinda I I'm envisioning some conferencing here where people can learn.
- 18:39Are you doing kinda panels where people are speaking and and artists are able to kinda
- 18:44learn from some experts out there?
- 18:46Yes.
- 18:47BMI, ASCAP will be there.
- 18:50We have a few different people in those different nonprofits that, the the research
- 18:57I've done, there's a lot of nonprofits who offer, music classes and different things like
- 19:03that for artists, and I don't think they know it's available.
- 19:06But the point is is that we're gonna definitely have it to where you're gonna see a lot of
- 19:12different vendors and people you wouldn't normally see altogether that night.
- 19:17So you got the workshops.
- 19:19You got the panels.
- 19:20Like I said, you got the networking event.
- 19:22We wanted to include a fashion show.
- 19:25Oh, boy.
- 19:25That's a lot.
- 19:27But you definitely get you definitely get a lot for that weekend.
- 19:34And like I said, I'm preparing to give you that final outlook and let you know what in detail
- 19:41what's gonna happen that weekend.
- 19:43So
- 19:45Awesome.
- 19:45And what day will the award show?
- 19:47Will it be on the Saturday or on Sunday?
- 19:49It's gonna be on Saturday.
- 19:52Fantastic.
- 19:53Well, you know what?
- 19:54I I have some loose plans right now, but I may be changing my plans.
- 19:59I think coming up there and seeing you sounds like a better use of my time.
- 20:05I can always get to Texas in a couple of days no matter where I'm traveling from.
- 20:10So I'm gonna look at my schedule when I get done here.
- 20:13If you'd make some space for me, let me hang out.
- 20:16You doing a red carpet at all?
- 20:18Yes.
- 20:19Yes.
- 20:19I would love to come and do some work on the red carpet.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23We're definitely gonna have it.
- 20:24Well, I was gonna invite you anyway.
- 20:26I don't know why you think I wouldn't.
- 20:30But, yeah, definitely, like I said, we're gonna be making sure that by Monday, certain well,
- 20:37majority of the organizations and different people that, you know, we have already, they're
- 20:42gonna have that information, and they can choose and decide on what they wanna do.
- 20:47Because we're also gonna be at, the South what is it?
- 20:51South by Southwest event.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:53We're gonna be there as well because we realized we had time to do our event and still
- 20:58go there.
- 20:59So I'm really excited.
- 21:00And Mom, you know what?
- 21:02I'm gonna bring our tour vehicle up there.
- 21:04We're gonna pick you up.
- 21:06Everybody's gonna get on the bus, and we're gonna all go down to South by Southwest
- 21:09together because that's where I'm headed.
- 21:11So I think this was just meant to be, Michelle.
- 21:14I'm so thrilled to hear about everything that you got going on.
- 21:19Go ahead.
- 21:19Shout out the website for the awards again.
- 21:21Shout out some of your other businesses and everything you got going on.
- 21:24We may be doing a few more podcasts talking about the award show for sure before March as
- 21:30well.
- 21:30So go ahead and plug away.
- 21:32I'll let you go for now, and we'll reconvene here off the air.
- 21:37Okay.
- 21:38Definitely.
- 21:39So to cash you cash your vote, you can go to www.midwesttalentawards.com.
- 21:45You can also go to empowermedivasnetwork.com, but we are on all social media platforms.
- 21:53And, you know, just shout out, hustle man live.
- 21:57He's one of our DJs, DJ Cookie.
- 22:00And and just so you know, that they they have 17 radio stations.
- 22:07So if you wanna add, you know, your podcast and your songs, be sure to, you know, send that
- 22:14information to me, and I can give it to them.
- 22:17Awesome.
- 22:18Well, Michelle, I just so appreciate everything that you're doing for your community and this
