Transcript
- 0:09All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:12a Monday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:15For the next couple of hours, Trent Condon and Ken Miller will
- 0:19talk sports with you and we appreciate your starting your
- 0:21afternoon here with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:25program. We will start at the bottom of
- 0:27the hour. Only guest in the first hour of
- 0:29the program is Matt Rudy, long time golf writer.
- 0:32He will help us take a look back at just AI thought a phenomenal
- 0:354 days of golf. I really did on Thursday.
- 0:38I would have bet a lot of money JJ Spawn's not going to be
- 0:41there. But wow, what a tournament.
- 0:43We'll get into that. And listen, I get into studio
- 0:45and there's the Coward Show's playing in my ear.
- 0:49And he starts his show by saying there's no juice in the US Open.
- 0:52Were we watching the same event? I mean, my God, I thought it was
- 0:55phenomenal theatre and there were no big names, but just
- 0:59completely glued. Anyways, enough about him.
- 1:02We'll talk to Matt Rudy at 12:30.
- 1:04Matt Snyder continues the mat theme today.
- 1:06We'll talk to Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 1:08He covers Major League Baseball. What a trade.
- 1:11The seemingly came out of nowhere yesterday.
- 1:13Rafael Devers, who you could see it coming, you know, going back
- 1:17to spring training when he didn't want to be the DH.
- 1:19He's third baseman despite the fact the American League's goal.
- 1:22Glovers now a member of your team.
- 1:24He was digging in his heels. Now he'll do so in San
- 1:27Francisco. So we'll talk baseball with Matt
- 1:29Snyder and then Alec Bussey on Iowa State.
- 1:32The latest on Iowa State, do some recruiting.
- 1:35I'm not sure it was a positive tweet I just saw on X from Evan
- 1:38Jacobson and how well the Notre Dame visit went to Yikes.
- 1:43So buckle up. We'll see.
- 1:44Obviously, he's a good player. Good players are going to have
- 1:47options. We'll see where Iowa State
- 1:49remains as far as bussy. Other topics as well with Alec
- 1:52when he joins us coming up about 130.
- 1:54Trent will make some plays. Circus Sports will sponsor those
- 1:57who've got a Game 5 tonight in the NBA series knotted up at 2
- 2:01apiece. Big number Thunder favored by 9
- 2:041/2. Seems like a lot of points, but
- 2:06we'll hear from Trent on what he's going to do later on the
- 2:09program. But we'll hear from him right
- 2:11now on other things. Good to see you.
- 2:12How was Father's? Day it was good, busy a lot
- 2:14going on but made it through the weekend.
- 2:16Legs are a little sore head. Oh, you brought?
- 2:18A bike that's. Right, had the bike ride I only
- 2:20made about half the way compared to the rest of the guys I would.
- 2:23Have taken the under. Yeah, yeah, 15 miles.
- 2:25That's good for the fat man. So we we persevered, we battled
- 2:28and we got work to do before next year's tour.
- 2:31Deloitte. So that was Saturday.
- 2:32That was Saturday. Remind me of the weather was
- 2:34sunny. It was hot, wasn't it?
- 2:35It was warm, yeah, it was sticky.
- 2:37That lost a few LB's on the bike but made it.
- 2:39Through we gained it back on Father's Day.
- 2:41Absolutely, had some steak yesterday, had a good time and
- 2:44for the first time got the dessert of my choice as opposed
- 2:47to my father in law's who usually gets and.
- 2:49What did you choose? It was like a chocolate cake.
- 2:52It's called better than sex cake.
- 2:53Oh, it's incredible. Sounds good.
- 2:55Very, very good. So I was happy with that one.
- 2:58And away we go, back-to-back to normalcy.
- 3:00Now back to real life. Yeah, for the next 364,
- 3:04absolutely. Well, let's let's start.
- 3:06We got a lot of ground to cover. Obviously baseball news.
- 3:09We got it. I got it.
- 3:09We got to bring up the WNBA from Saturday.
- 3:12Just remarkable theater truly was a television ratings are not
- 3:16out. I hope you didn't fall.
- 3:17Some of you fall for the erroneous number that was posted
- 3:20on X. That's a fake tweet that we're
- 3:23not 20 million people tuned in to watch the game as it as a
- 3:27tweet from what looked like the Indiana Fever account would want
- 3:30to lead you to believe. But I'm guessing that a lot of
- 3:32people did despite the fact it was round three, the US Open.
- 3:35But the golf tournament yesterday, Trent, I thought it
- 3:37was remarkable theater. I truly did.
- 3:40I mean, coming down the stretch, what do we have?
- 3:41Four or five guys tied for the lead.
- 3:45All of them, none of them rather under par, All of them even or
- 3:49worse guys that within, you know, a shot or two.
- 3:53Scotty Scheffler's hanging around.
- 3:56I logged on to my Twitter account 'cause I wanted to bet
- 3:58somebody in the final round of the tournament yesterday and I'm
- 4:01going through the odds and I'm price shopping.
- 4:03As you know, Scotty Scheffler was 60 to 1 and I couldn't pull
- 4:07the trigger and in hindsight, I'm glad I didn't.
- 4:09I bet Hatton, so I got to run for my money.
- 4:12But 60 to 1 and there he was, you know, making it interesting
- 4:16at the very least. But hats off the Spawn, a dude
- 4:20who bogeyed five of his first six holes is able to win a
- 4:25major. It was great theater and the
- 4:29putt that he made will be one of those all.
- 4:30Timers, absolutely, it'll be remembered for a long time.
- 4:33A 64 footer, what do you need to in that environment on those
- 4:37screens, how different they were playing compared to what you
- 4:40dealt with basically all week long with all the water in
- 4:42there, you just don't know. And just to absolutely nut that
- 4:45thing. How?
- 4:46Far past the hole was it going if he.
- 4:48That is a great question. I wish I would have saw like an
- 4:51analytic thing. Yeah, on that if it.
- 4:53'Cause it looked like it had some giddy up behind it, didn't
- 4:55it? Absolutely.
- 4:56And all of a sudden, Bobby Mack, Robert McIntyre, What?
- 4:58Have you had it 99 to? 1 I did that would have if it
- 5:02would have got to that point, yeah, it would have been hedging
- 5:04a little bit more. Makes it 9:00 to 1:00.
- 5:07Bobby backs the guy that play a lot.
- 5:08He's had some success when Scottish Open and then went out
- 5:11and played really well the British.
- 5:12Didn't he? Wasn't this the cat who won the
- 5:14Canadian Open with his dad on his bag?
- 5:16I think you're right. Yeah, like 3 years ago.
- 5:18Two years ago. And I remember we're thinking
- 5:20just because it's a father son moment, you know just how
- 5:23special that must have been. I'm pretty sure it was John
- 5:26Rom's in the hunt. Victor Hovland couldn't make a
- 5:29putt yesterday to save his life. We got introduced to Carlos
- 5:32Ortiz. We've been around periodically,
- 5:35but never to this point. But I'll tell you one of the big
- 5:37stories that comes out of the yesterday.
- 5:38And and yes, JJ spawned remarkable the USGA rules
- 5:43officials. They misinterpreted the rule by
- 5:45all accounts on Sam Burns. That's a that's that's that's a
- 5:50go ahead and move it club length.
- 5:53That's relief. You can get relief all day long.
- 5:56And did you see the video the ex Kyle Porter is it was with one
- 6:01of the big. Golf.
- 6:01He used to be CBS from CBS. Right and then got laid off and
- 6:05opened up his own thing. He went back after the
- 6:08tournament was over and found the spot that he hit from and
- 6:12and obviously didn't have a club, but he just put his foot
- 6:15down where burns. His feet would have come to rest
- 6:18when or when he was setting up to hit his ball.
- 6:20And as soon as his foot touches where it does, I mean, water
- 6:24comes squishing out of the ground, though you don't have to
- 6:27be able to see the water to gain relief.
- 6:30And that's right in the rules. And not one, but two USGA
- 6:35officials ruled against him. And you knew it was coming.
- 6:38You knew it was coming because that's in his head that he just
- 6:42got screwed. And sure enough, the the shot
- 6:45was it was bad. It was nowhere near he made, I
- 6:49think did he make double or bogey?
- 6:50I might have made double on that hole, but just it was 15.
- 6:55He made double. He made, he made 6.
- 6:57Just really unfortunate because he was having an unbelievable
- 7:00tournament up to that point, but it got between his ears.
- 7:03During the delay when they were playing the 2008 USA Rocco
- 7:07versus Tiger, did you stay with it?
- 7:10In and out, yeah. I took Jed out and then I came
- 7:12back and it was still on man it. Was just fun watching.
- 7:15Yeah, it was, it really was. It is in his at his peak, right.
- 7:20It was, it was good, but. Doesn't feel like that was 17
- 7:23years ago. I know you never thought of it
- 7:25like that, but yeah. 17 years ago.
- 7:29Jesus, time flies. That was a long time.
- 7:32I. Was doing a little math and just
- 7:33sit there like, oh boy, that was, yeah, that was a while.
- 7:36Back. Well, hats off to them for
- 7:37having that ready to go, right? Yeah.
- 7:39I mean, I know that they can look at the weather forecast and
- 7:42they can see what potentially is coming, but I thought it was.
- 7:45I thought it was and there was no.
- 7:47I mean, give me the big name. And towards the top, it's worth
- 7:50the top. We really didn't need one, did
- 7:53we? No, I mean, Hovlin would be, I
- 7:54guess the probably, but he's not an American, no.
- 7:57So still incredibly young, you know, And this year has not been
- 8:02outstanding. Bobby Mack.
- 8:04Tyrell Hatton. Hatton's just known 'cause he's
- 8:07a loose camp. Yeah.
- 8:08And that was the reason he was crossed off my list.
- 8:11I didn't have anywhere because I'm like this course with his
- 8:13personality and his temperament. Well then it got to him what it
- 8:15was on 17 on that on that. I mean spawns drive on 17 was
- 8:21maybe one in the golf tournament.
- 8:22Had a shot to had a putt to make eagle made birdie goes to 18
- 8:26with a one stroke lead, puts his drive right down where it needed
- 8:30to be a second shot. Yeah, was on the green, but you
- 8:32know, maybe a little further than he wanted 2 putts to win
- 8:35it, but he only needed one. Adam Scott, it was one of the
- 8:39saddest things is they're showing spawn.
- 8:42He's in there, takes that deep breath as he's going through his
- 8:45scorecard, and then they cut back.
- 8:47Oh yeah, Adam Scott's still out there on the course, so they
- 8:49just have a shot of him hitting into ET.
- 8:51They're like, you gotta feel bad.
- 8:52I mean, it's terrible weather. Everybody's done, everybody's
- 8:55finished up and you, no, you got finish around and still got a
- 8:58top 20. Out of it.
- 8:59But, well, how about that mean The final pairing in the US Open
- 9:02shot 78 and 79, burned 78, and Adam Scott was 79.
- 9:09Scotty Sheffer never felt like, yeah, he's kind of flirting
- 9:11with. It'll mean time for seven.
- 9:13Right. Yeah, time for. 7th just goes to
- 9:17show you just how good this cat is, right?
- 9:19Even when it's seemingly to us he's not having his best
- 9:22tournament, there he is. Top ten finish for Scotty
- 9:24Scheffler. And you kind of, you mentioned
- 9:26Jon ROM, that was a guy that I had circled this week.
- 9:29That was one of my bigger ones. It just what could have been for
- 9:32him. You look at a couple of late,
- 9:34late round scenarios in Rounds 2 and 3 proved to be the
- 9:37difference. He was right there.
- 9:38His game is ready, Yep, And I think he's a guy you definitely
- 9:41need to when we get to the British.
- 9:43He's a guy definitely needs to be in there because seems like
- 9:46he's figured it out again. He's back on the right track.
- 9:48He's too talented to struggle like he has.
- 9:51And yeah, the live is obviously a part of that, but feels like
- 9:54that's a guy that's going to be in contention now going.
- 9:56Forward. No, absolutely.
- 9:57So that was, I thought, terrific theater.
- 9:59I did. Anxious to see how the
- 10:01television numbers come out on that one because again, there's
- 10:03no big name per SE, but I have to believe that it was going to
- 10:08be very well received. And with the delay, it pushes it
- 10:10into prime time and you'd anticipate that would help or.
- 10:14And a lot of people just checked out at that point.
- 10:16It's a leader blinder, right? Yeah.
- 10:17Leader board I don't care about. I don't know hardly how.
- 10:20Long was the delay. Was it an hour and 40 minutes?
- 10:22I think it was about an hour, hour 35.
- 10:25People got, you know, maybe dinner plans that night, things
- 10:27like that. So yeah, you get the prime time
- 10:29element of it. However, how many people had
- 10:31already said, well, I've seen enough today and went that
- 10:34direction, but that'll be interesting and intriguing.
- 10:36But we're watching. No phenomenal loved it, loved
- 10:39every minute of it, happy the JJ spawn just sink of that putt the
- 10:43way that he did. This was the leader on Monday
- 10:47made although you mean he putted his you know what off on not a
- 10:49Monday on round one on Thursday. Didn't think he'd be there in
- 10:54the end, but there he was 4.3 million and and the, the, the
- 10:58history of this guy, the, you know, the stick to itiveness
- 11:02that he had to do and a lot of guys are this way.
- 11:04Yeah, just a fight to earn your card.
- 11:07I mean, this first year on tour and it was not on this tours.
- 11:09On the Canadian tour he made 11,000 yes, $1,011,000 in his
- 11:14first year, lost his card, got a break because of the COVID year.
- 11:18They didn't take the card away from him and he was able to hang
- 11:22around, but wow. He.
- 11:24Not rufric dude like that? Absolutely.
- 11:26And he's wearing the red, white and blue.
- 11:27Or will be during the Ryder Cup. 3:00 AM.
- 11:31Goes to CVS. Great.
- 11:33Glad you brought. It up pick up some medicine for
- 11:34his kid. I was out there on Father's Day,
- 11:36does that, his wife saying to his older of the two, Daddy
- 11:41won't. Yeah, that was great.
- 11:42It really was that was. Great.
- 11:43And to do it I I. Because apparently after Daddy
- 11:46finishes the the daughter looks at Mommy all the time.
- 11:51Did daddy win? So she was able to say Daddy won
- 11:54before she. So yeah, that was pretty,
- 11:56especially on Father's Day, right?
- 11:57They I don't know if you saw the cut to the clubhouse and the
- 12:00kids came in and they were giving him a hug and one of the
- 12:03two was hugging his caddy. No, you got to figure it, you
- 12:06know, and it's life changing for him too.
- 12:08They they, what does he get a medal?
- 12:10The caddy, is that what they gave?
- 12:11I don't know. I didn't stick around.
- 12:13I was there, I was watching it and I didn't know if it was AI
- 12:15think it was a medal. Daddy got it.
- 12:17But regardless, he thinks he's 5.
- 12:18Percent. I mean, you're on a beg for JJ
- 12:20spot, right? What are you making?
- 12:23Peanuts, you know? Not even expenses, probably.
- 12:26I was going through and I was explaining it to my
- 12:27father-in-law and my sister-in-law who are not golf
- 12:30fans. Like he made $4.5 million for
- 12:33this and during his career, I think his career earnings were
- 12:36like $14 million. That sounds great, right, $14
- 12:39million over a decade. And you're paying, you're an
- 12:43independent contractor, you're paying for your hotels, you're
- 12:45paying for your transportation, you're paying for your caddy,
- 12:47you're paying for your agent. You're paying all these fees on
- 12:50top of it. That money goes pretty quickly.
- 12:53Hell yeah, I mean. And then look at the golf.
- 12:54Course, did you see his euphoria with me because he got paid?
- 12:58Hey, before I forget to ask you this, there was a caddy from
- 13:02Indianola. Do you remember this?
- 13:04I don't know. Neither do I don't know how much
- 13:07you did. No, there's a guy that.
- 13:09Was not a bag for a long time, yes.
- 13:11And a Brad Bunting, if you're listening.
- 13:15He'll help us out. He.
- 13:16There there was a local caddy because I remember we had him on
- 13:20after his guy won an event and for the life of me because he
- 13:24because he told me how much he made.
- 13:27Can you find it? Let's see a couple of names.
- 13:30The PGA Professional down there, his name is Jason Marvelli.
- 13:33No, it wasn't him. This guy was a caddy.
- 13:35OK, I've been 60s and 70s raised in Indio Steve spray.
- 13:40Name's not familiar. I mean, the only one that jumps
- 13:43to mind for me is Michael Greller.
- 13:45Yeah, sure, but he's a Northwest.
- 13:47Iowa guy. No, this, this was a this I
- 13:49think he was from Indian, OK. And I don't know if we were
- 13:53doing the show from Indian all at the time, which would have
- 13:56been back around the turn of the century.
- 13:57I don't, I think it was after that.
- 13:59But there was a local guy I'd love to know because because I
- 14:02remember he he, he kind of, you know, peeled back the curtain
- 14:05when it comes to how much these guys make, how much they, you
- 14:11know, if your golfer wins, what does that mean for you type of
- 14:15thing? And I can't for the life of me
- 14:19pull it out of my you know what? But someone will help me when
- 14:22maybe Troy is here. Troy, how are you?
- 14:24Thanks for listening to Troy. Do you know who I'm talking
- 14:26about or did you call for a different reason?
- 14:28Yeah, Casey Kellogg was the professional caddy from Casey
- 14:33Kellogg Simpson College. Yeah.
- 14:36I'm getting a bunch of texts right now.
- 14:38Thank you, Tom Mullenbrook. Thank you, baseball Benny.
- 14:40So do you. So he was from Indianola?
- 14:42Right. Yes, Indianola.
- 14:44And he played baseball and football in high school and he
- 14:49was, he played baseball exception with Brad Rose and
- 14:52that really good team, those really good teams, Brent Clark.
- 14:57OK, Yeah, yeah, he's more famous for his daughter.
- 15:00He. Got a text from Tom Mullenbrook.
- 15:02He was a student assistant at Simpson, Cal.
- 15:04Do you know Tom Mullenbrook? I certainly do.
- 15:06Tom's a good friend my. RA his his his roommate was AI
- 15:11don't know how many times decathlon winner Drake kept
- 15:14their jandrin. How about that?
- 15:16He won a bunch of him. I remember that.
- 15:17Hey Troy, thanks. Who and who did he caddy?
- 15:19Who did Kellogg caddy for when he when he had that windfall or
- 15:23seemingly when his guy won? Do you remember that part?
- 15:26Ryuji Amato was the one and Casey was a great guy and
- 15:31unfortunately he passed away so God bless Casey Kellogg and his
- 15:35family. Thank you for the Intel, Troy.
- 15:36I appreciate the call. Yeah, good stuff, Casey Kellogg.
- 15:39Passed away 2 summers. Ago is that right?
- 15:41Yeah, 15 and and Ruigi Amata. I remember the name.
- 15:45What did he win then we would have gone that Casey Kellogg
- 15:48would have got 15 minutes of fame.
- 15:50I don't know for being a caddy, but but good stuff anyways.
- 15:53I don't recall what they actually meant.
- 15:54It's 5% sticks in my brain, but phenomenal, phenomenal theater.
- 15:59All right, so was Saturday afternoon, 2:00 on ABC, man, I
- 16:04mean, what more can you say? You run out of superlative.
- 16:08You truly do. There's only so many.
- 16:10Ways she's one of one. To come back in that environment
- 16:15against that team and to put together that kind of
- 16:18performance, what was it? The 17 up and run, culminating
- 16:22with another deep 3. The way she looks, the way she
- 16:25carries herself. Brianna Stewart and her going
- 16:27back up the court after Caitlin just buried one over Stewart.
- 16:31I mean, Stewart just best player right now, considered the best
- 16:35player to ever play in the league.
- 16:38And looking at the air parent, you know, it's just there is
- 16:41one's back pedaling. Jaden Court.
- 16:43AJ Wilson probably in the hunt. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:45In the conversation. But it was, it was just
- 16:48phenomenal. It really was watching that and
- 16:51the building itself and just what she means for the game,
- 16:54because we saw the television number, not just the Fever
- 16:57numbers, the leak numbers they had.
- 16:59Down 50%, right, 50%. Look, I'm guilty.
- 17:02Did you watch any? I didn't.
- 17:03We watched that first game just to see how they.
- 17:05Looked. They looked different, right?
- 17:06Right. But I didn't watch the whole
- 17:07thing. No, but we weren't turning on
- 17:09the the aces and whoever the Phoenix we were, we were just
- 17:13checked out like most like half of the country that follows it.
- 17:16But my, my good God, just jaw-dropping is what it was.
- 17:20And you know what I really liked about it afterwards or it was
- 17:22either yesterday in a press conference or following the
- 17:25game, Stephanie White criticizing her a little bit,
- 17:27coaching her. You know, I'm going to introduce
- 17:30you to she passed up one of her teammates to try and make an
- 17:33improbable pass that was a turnover.
- 17:35But you know, just coaching Caitlin up and yeah, she's
- 17:38really good, but she needs to get better type of thing.
- 17:41And she's getting better on TV. Have you noticed her
- 17:43commercials? Oh yeah, they're getting better.
- 17:45She's 'cause she's got a little actress in her now.
- 17:48Those first statements, they were rough.
- 17:49They were rough. Yes, put it mildly.
- 17:52But now that logo when she's sorting the socks or whatever
- 17:56the you've seen that commercial. Wow, you've seen that.
- 17:58Commercial yeah, that was you got me on that one is what are
- 18:02we going to get her shoe. Oh, it's already was announced.
- 18:05It wasn't. It's coming Christmas.
- 18:06Christmas. Yeah, OK.
- 18:07It was either gonna be back to school, yes, or Christmas.
- 18:09And we, I mean, everybody was all over that.
- 18:12That's when they're gonna wait, but they're gonna wait till
- 18:13Christmas. Her something is coming out in
- 18:16November and the shoe very quickly after that, but in time
- 18:19for Christmas. It's like we said before, it's
- 18:21going to be this year's Cabbage Patch Kid.
- 18:23I know it's good luck finding them, no?
- 18:25It's going to be under the tree at the Condon house.
- 18:26I'm sure we can find it. Yeah, I'm sure it is probably 2
- 18:28pairs. Yes, because Jack loves Caitlin
- 18:31Clark. Too.
- 18:31Who doesn't? Yes, little kids love Caitlin
- 18:33Clark. Great, great theater.
- 18:36Really was. So the Raphael Devers trade just
- 18:38real quick on baseball. I'm not surprised that this
- 18:42happened. I kind of surprised by the
- 18:43timing now. I mean, Boston was starting to
- 18:45play well. Yeah, well, it goes back to
- 18:48something we talked about coming on the heels of a last week,
- 18:50another Sunday night baseball game with the Red Sox and
- 18:52Yankees. But you had the intrigue that
- 18:54led into it with the starting pitcher that was called out.
- 18:57The Yankees and and Red Sox played well there.
- 19:00They'd been a disappointment. I didn't think they were going
- 19:02to be a 95 win team. No, but I thought they were
- 19:04going to be an 85 win team. They're going to be in wild card
- 19:07contention and they weren't playing at that level.
- 19:08I thought that they were trending toward the second best
- 19:11team in the American League East, which probably is going to
- 19:13get you into the playoffs. It was, I mean, what, a 5-6 week
- 19:17stretch where they were just playing bad baseball and you
- 19:20have to anticipate that the Devers headache had to be a part
- 19:22of it. I mean we get a malcontent like
- 19:24that day in and day out. It won't take the owners calls
- 19:27he's. Right.
- 19:28You have that component and here comes this new staff, this new
- 19:31GM, new front office, they ask you to move to DH.
- 19:33No, not going to do it. But hang on a second you we just
- 19:37signed the Gold Glove third baseman and he's better than
- 19:40you. Didn't care, you know, take one
- 19:42for the team. This doesn't diminish your.
- 19:43Paycheck. You know what?
- 19:45There's all of a sudden there's not going to be a zero
- 19:47disappear. And temper's still hitting.
- 19:49Yeah, he's doing well. I mean, it's OPS is over 900.
- 19:53He's going to be excellent. And it's great for the Giants.
- 19:55I mean, they tried to spend for the last two off seasons and
- 19:58they just haven't got many people certainly high level
- 20:00freeze instead of wanting to sign.
- 20:02So you get your kind of top ticket type of guy.
- 20:05You get rid of the headache if you're the Red Sox and.
- 20:08How about the staff? A little bit, Yeah, It's a hole
- 20:11in your lineup now. You don't lose an offensive
- 20:13player like that and not be impactful.
- 20:16I think they're threats. I mean, if you're a Red Sox fan,
- 20:18your team kind of waves the towel seemingly at this point.
- 20:22Real quick, Ohtani pitches tonight.
- 20:24What do you what do you expect? Is there a prop as far as
- 20:27strikeouts for him? Because how many is he on a
- 20:29pitch count? Have you seen that?
- 20:30I have not. So I just saw speculation that
- 20:33they were anticipating maybe 2-3 innings at the most.
- 20:35This was supposed to be a bullpen game and now it's
- 20:38Ohtani. But if he goes out there, 30
- 20:42pitches, Max 40, I mean something in that range.
- 20:45Don't anticipate anything more than that, but that's what it's
- 20:47going to be. But it's June 16th.
- 20:50I did not think we were going to see him pitching in the middle.
- 20:52No, I didn't either. I thought this was going to be
- 20:54like middle of July, late July type of thing, kind of gear him
- 20:58up there. He's going to be able to.
- 21:00He'll be fully back here by the time the trade deadline comes
- 21:03and you're going to see sometimes guys coming off Tommy
- 21:06John and for him a second Tommy John.
- 21:08It takes a long time, but they're going to.
- 21:10Err on the side of caution. Absolutely.
- 21:12But well, in front of the trade deadline, is this a guy that
- 21:15we're going to be able to count off from playoff time or do we
- 21:18make him a bullpen arm? Is that something that makes
- 21:20sense there? We augment our bullpen and now
- 21:22we had no out. We have to go out and we have to
- 21:24get maybe 2. Starting well, Glass now is
- 21:26making his way back. I saw him on the field playing
- 21:28long toss yesterday. So they're going to get him
- 21:30back. Mets, despite getting swept over
- 21:33the weekend, still have the best record in the National League,
- 21:35then the Cubs, then the Dodgers. But if you're a Cubs fan today
- 21:38and you just saw what happened yesterday, the middle of June,
- 21:41are you thinking to Hoyer and company?
- 21:43You know you don't have to wait until the end of July, right?
- 21:47Let's get busy. All right, before we go to break
- 21:50your thoughts on game #5 tonight.
- 21:53I can't believe that A the Pacers gave it away.
- 21:56Yes, and be the Thunder covered. Yes, they did.
- 22:00I mean, that was as shocking as anything for it to happen the
- 22:03way that it did. What, what do we think?
- 22:04What do you think you're going to see tonight?
- 22:06I just love this Pacers team, so I.
- 22:08Need to I take the points all day long, Trent.
- 22:10Just too many, don't you think? I.
- 22:11Think so too. 9 1/2. From where we were when this
- 22:14series began to where we are today, it is a completely
- 22:18different conversation now. I think they lost the series on
- 22:20Friday. I do too.
- 22:21I think that was their opportunity.
- 22:23I think we said as much. They had to get out to a three
- 22:25one lead to win the series. Now you got to win two out of
- 22:28three, at least one of them in OK C.
- 22:31It is a tall hill, but the Pacers once again have dictated
- 22:35the way this series is played. And those role players have been
- 22:38outstanding. Now they're outstanding at home.
- 22:40Now can you get one of these two games, 5 or 7 where you get
- 22:44those role, one of those? There is a 7 to get.
- 22:46And it's probably two of those guys step.
- 22:48Do you feel they have to get it tonight that that they have to
- 22:51clinch in Indiana? Yeah.
- 22:53I think so. Yeah, so it's back to must win,
- 22:57but they faced it when we said it in game three.
- 22:58They had to win that one. They did they do it one more
- 23:02time get and how how about the theater of that this young
- 23:06talented deep Thunder team facing elimination on the room.
- 23:10I'm rooting for the Pacers. How can you not in a big time
- 23:13love the story. I want it to happen just for the
- 23:16spectacle that will get Game 6, because if it is, that'll be
- 23:19great in Game 6 and maybe we'll get a Game 7 force.
- 23:22But it just feels like it changes the complete tenor of
- 23:24this one. The Pacers somehow, someway,
- 23:26again find a way tonight. All right, well, if this is a
- 23:29yes or no, is there a game seven in either of the Winter Sport
- 23:32Championship Series? Not in Hockey I.
- 23:34Don't think so either. I'm not OK, I'm holding out.
- 23:38All right, I like it. We'll take a break.
- 23:39We'll come back. Matt.
- 23:40Rudy Moore, U.S. Open conversation on the other
- 23:43side. Miller and Condon were on their
- 23:44way on a Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:48Network. I'm Millory Condon, welcome back
- 24:02just past 1230 on a Monday. Coming up, our number 2, Matt
- 24:06Snyder covers Major League Baseball for CBSSports.com.
- 24:09Alec Bussey, Iowa State, Trent's plays of the day, circus sports
- 24:13sponsor. Let's talk some golf.
- 24:14Let's talk more golf. Matt Rudy, long time golf
- 24:17writer, helps us out with yesterday's U.S.
- 24:21Open. Matt Trenton can thank you as
- 24:23always. I can't wait to see the
- 24:25television number. Yes.
- 24:26There was no quote big name on it, but my God, that was
- 24:30phenomenal theater, was it not? Plus, you even got to see a
- 24:34little bit of vintage Tiger Woods playing in the middle of
- 24:38it. You got a You got a Tiger bump,
- 24:40too in the rain delay. Yeah, I definitely think it was
- 24:44amazing theater. And I think it's cool when golf
- 24:48tournaments come down to the end under different conditions, you
- 24:52know, instead of, you know, having to hit hero shots here, I
- 24:56think you got to see a lot of car crash shots mixed, mixed in
- 25:00with a couple of hero shots at the end.
- 25:02I mean, the shots that JJ spawned, hit on 17 and 18, the
- 25:05driver right on the green. And then, you know, to make that
- 25:08putt was, you know, the finish was incredibly dramatic.
- 25:13And I think it rewarded the guy who persevered.
- 25:17I would hesitate to say that he played the best the whole week,
- 25:20but he definitely persevered. The best to go through the rain
- 25:24delay and be able to reset yourself and come out and play a
- 25:28back nine. They shot 40 on the front 9.
- 25:31I mean, I can't remember a time when a PGA 2, never mind the US
- 25:34Open, but a PGA Tour event period where someone could shoot
- 25:3840 on the front 9 and win and win the trophy, that's that's
- 25:41remarkable perseverance. Yeah, we what Tiger and the
- 25:44masters would that be the only one that way back then, but
- 25:48that. Yeah, I mean, that was in the
- 25:49first, first round, exactly. In the final, in the final
- 25:52round, 40 in the on the front 9 in the final round, even when
- 25:55someone had a giant lead where it didn't really matter.
- 25:58Sure, 4040 is amateur territory. That's an amazing
- 26:03accomplishment, especially on a par 70 golf course.
- 26:06How far? I asked Trent this.
- 26:09I haven't seen any analytics. If the putt doesn't drop, how
- 26:11far past the hole is spawns? What would have been his putt
- 26:15still to win for par on the final hole?
- 26:18Do you have any idea how fast, how far that would have gone
- 26:20past the hole? 4 feet?
- 26:225 feet? What did it look like to you?
- 26:24I was talking to my friend Stan Utley, you know, the noted short
- 26:27game coach. I was talking to him this
- 26:28morning and he said that part was rolling.
- 26:32It was remarkable not only for what he was able to do under
- 26:34pressure, but that was perfect speed.
- 26:36So in his in his assessment, perfect speed means finishing a
- 26:40foot and a half doesn't go in. That's remarkable from 65 or
- 26:46whatever it was 64 feet to, to roll it up like that, even
- 26:50getting a preview like you did and your Victor Hovland was on
- 26:52the exact same line. So even with that, there's so
- 26:56much pressure. And when you think about how the
- 26:58conditions had changed, you know, you have a green speed.
- 27:00That's one thing. Then it pours rain and there's a
- 27:03delay. Then you come out and it's a
- 27:05crapshoot. Who knows what that green speed
- 27:07is? So to be able to, to adapt and
- 27:10to roll that ball under incredible pressure and, and do
- 27:14it at a speed where you know, the, you know what, what's the
- 27:17cliche? It rolled in like a putt.
- 27:18Well, literally we rolled in like a putt.
- 27:21It was that that was really impressive.
- 27:23So you look at JJ Spawn, he's 5/8.
- 27:25He's got a good club speed, but it's not a bomber.
- 27:27This is not a guy you look at around the green metrics that's
- 27:30high. How does he win this golf
- 27:31tournament? I mean, a career journeyman.
- 27:33How does it come together for four these four days with a guy
- 27:36with his skill set? I think this was exactly like
- 27:40the Open Championship last year, you know, like a Brian Harmon
- 27:43kind of a tournament, you know, and, and you know, I think that
- 27:47when when you can deal with the adversity of bad breaks, look at
- 27:51what happened to him on Sunday on the 2nd hole, he has a really
- 27:55good approach shot. It hits the flag and it bounces
- 27:5850 yards off the green. I was at the British Open where
- 28:01Sergio Garcia hit the flag in the playoffs and he came off the
- 28:05course and did an interview and, and blamed what happened to him,
- 28:08you know, on the golf gods having something against him.
- 28:11So you can either have the mentality that when something
- 28:13happens like that, you're, it's just not your day, or you can,
- 28:17you know, make 5 bogeys in the front 9 like, like JJ Spawn did
- 28:21and just decide that you're going to keep plugging along.
- 28:23So the, the, the perseverance part, dealing with the elements,
- 28:26dealing with the wind, dealing with the rain, that, you know,
- 28:29that, you know, Brian Harmon played the Open Championship 2
- 28:32years, two years ago, you know, in a full rain suit and, and it
- 28:35didn't really change anything about the dynamics of his swing.
- 28:38And he just kept doing what he did.
- 28:40I mean, Zach Johnson's made a whole career on being able to do
- 28:43things at places where people don't think he has the, the
- 28:47physical tool set to do it, but just being determined to play
- 28:49his game. If if, if laying up and hitting
- 28:52wed shots into those par fives at Augusta Nationals, what he
- 28:55needed to do, he did that. So I think that's what junior JJ
- 28:58spawn did. You know, what are my strengths?
- 29:00How do I keep doing things that set me up to hit shots?
- 29:02I like to hit And the closer you can stay to what your game plan
- 29:06is and and to and to hit those shots you like to hit.
- 29:09I mean, I give him a tremendous amount of credit for getting a
- 29:12short game lesson the week of the US Open.
- 29:14He completely changed his his his short game approach and the
- 29:18and the mechanics of his pitching and chipping to do that
- 29:21the week of a major and to be willing to go and you know, you
- 29:24know, put that into play, you know, the same week and haven't
- 29:28worked so well. Number one, I'm sure it gives a
- 29:30lot of business to the short game coach, but B the the
- 29:32willingness to do it and trust it.
- 29:34You know that that's some, that's some impressive presence
- 29:37of mind and, and and faith and, and, and what you're doing.
- 29:40I know Brian Manziel is a teacher that that you know, he
- 29:44says that they got Sam Burns ruling wrong, that he should
- 29:48have been given relief. It certainly affected Burns.
- 29:51I mean, if he asked the first guy, the first official, the
- 29:54nearest official, he said no. He said, can I get a second
- 29:57opinion? They they also ruled against
- 30:00him. By then, it was between his
- 30:01ears. At least that's how I thought
- 30:03because he'd been playing impeccable golf up to that
- 30:06point. Did the USDA get it wrong by not
- 30:08giving the leader at the time Sam Burns relief from casual
- 30:11water? I don't know if by the letter of
- 30:15the law they got it wrong. This is one of those rulings
- 30:17where it's definitely an interpretation.
- 30:19And when you when it's an interpretation, then it becomes,
- 30:23well, whose interpretation is it?
- 30:24Is it the player's interpretation?
- 30:26Is it the officials interpretation?
- 30:28And, you know, the actual rule is if you get into your normal
- 30:32stance, if you see standing water, then it's you know,
- 30:35that's when you can invoke the rule.
- 30:37Now the my quarrel with the rule is seeing the standing, the
- 30:42standing water is not, you know, there could be a situation where
- 30:46your feet, you see a little bit of that standing water come up
- 30:49and it doesn't have much impact on what when you're hitting the
- 30:52ball. But you could, or you could have
- 30:54a situation like we saw, which was, you know, where he was
- 30:57standing. You might not have seen the
- 31:00standing water around his feet, but clearly when his club hit
- 31:03the ground it behaved differently.
- 31:05I mean, he had to catch that shot so much more perfectly than
- 31:09quote UN quote normal because that water and that muddy kind
- 31:13of situation that the ball was in was going to make the club
- 31:16head turn over and do things that he could not predict.
- 31:20Now, in my opinion, this is such a high precision event and the
- 31:24demands on the shots you have to hit are so high.
- 31:28The interpretation of the rules should be in the player's favor.
- 31:32If the player says I am, you know, I am clearly in standing
- 31:35water to me. That's you know, he should
- 31:37consult with his playing partner, the other for the
- 31:39player who is in the group with him.
- 31:41They should be discussing that and that should be that should
- 31:44be the players interpretation because so much of what this
- 31:47game is is the players interpretation of what did they
- 31:51intend to do. This is a place where the
- 31:53players interpretation I think should have won out.
- 31:56World #2 Rory McIlroy, his highlight of the week is
- 31:58throwing a club that bounced back to him and that's your
- 32:01highlight of a major championship?
- 32:02Probably not a very good but now I guess he battled to make the
- 32:05cut. Played better yesterday.
- 32:06However, Rory going into Port Bush, that'll be the next time
- 32:09out at a major. What did we learn from him this
- 32:12week? It was certainly his game.
- 32:14Does not appear to be what it was back in April.
- 32:16What do we know about Rory now going into the final major?
- 32:20Well, I think what you heard him when he started to talk to the
- 32:23media again, I think you started to hear the self talk that he's
- 32:28trying to pick up to, to get himself back in the right
- 32:31headspace. He said, I definitely, I climb
- 32:34on Everest and I, you know, I needed to find a different, you
- 32:37know, some different kind of challenge.
- 32:38And I wasn't really ready for the PGA and I wasn't really
- 32:41ready for the US Open. But if I can't get ramped up for
- 32:45an Open Championship in my own backyard in my own country, you
- 32:49know, what else is, you know, what else could I possibly get
- 32:51ramped up before? So I think that that's the
- 32:53beginning of the self talk and the narrative to, you know, to
- 32:56say, OK, now it's time to to kind of get back to where I was.
- 33:01There's no doubt that when everything is turned on and
- 33:04then, you know, in the right position for him, he's as good
- 33:06as anybody. It's just, I mean, I think, I
- 33:09think it's it took more out of them than we could know.
- 33:14Not only winning that tournament.
- 33:16Then have all of the stuff happened with the, you know, the
- 33:18story being somebody leaking the story about his driver going
- 33:23into non conformance. I think with all the things that
- 33:26have been going on between the PGA Tour and with Liv, I think
- 33:29everybody's hypersensitive to those kinds of leaks and feeling
- 33:32like there's a some kind of surgical precision with how that
- 33:35happened. And you know who they're aimed
- 33:37at. And I think it can make you feel
- 33:39kind of paranoid and make you wonder who to trust and who not
- 33:42to trust. And and he just clearly had had
- 33:45enough of that. So I think it's the outside the
- 33:48golf course stuff and learning how to be in this new space that
- 33:52just takes time to deal with. And I'm going to take him in his
- 33:55word and say, you know, this is a chance to go play in a
- 33:57tournament that means something to him.
- 33:59And, and hope that he gets back to where he was because having
- 34:02him at full flight and having Scotty Scheffler at flight and
- 34:06nicely, Scotty wasn't at full flight at the US Open either,
- 34:09just by grit. He kind of hung in there and
- 34:11shot some good rounds. But to see those two guys in
- 34:13full flight is would be really fun.
- 34:15I know I'm betting him just by, but after what he said and what
- 34:18you just repeated what he said, if he's said something about
- 34:22motivation, if he can't get motivated for this, as you said
- 34:25he won't, nothing will motivate. And missed the cut the last time
- 34:28it was there. Did he?
- 34:30Oh, there's another angle. So what do we make of the news
- 34:32this morning? Is Jay Monahan, the commissioner
- 34:34of the PGA Tours are being pushed to, they're calling it
- 34:37their sunsetting Jay Monahan, whatever that means.
- 34:40I guess we'll all get sunset at some point.
- 34:43What does this mean is are they pushing him out?
- 34:45There'll be a new commissioner by the sounds of things.
- 34:47Is this based on the fact that the PGA and Liv couldn't get to
- 34:51an agreement and seemingly now are further away than they ever
- 34:54have? Well, if I were guessing in my
- 34:59part of my world is writing kind of peak performance books for
- 35:01leaders and you know, entrepreneurs and business type
- 35:04folks. And from, you know, being in
- 35:06that world versus being in the golf world.
- 35:08What that kind of language usually indicates is actually
- 35:11that there's some kind of deal coming.
- 35:13I don't know that to be true. I'm not trying to break any news
- 35:15here. But usually when they do that,
- 35:18it's not because the deal didn't happen.
- 35:19It's because the deal did happen, and they want to have
- 35:22some kind of configuration in the future that takes away some
- 35:25of of the, you know, the baggage that the people might bring to
- 35:28the new relationship. And, you know #1 there's,
- 35:32there's always, you know, kind of a shelf life to those jobs.
- 35:36And, you know, the players themselves could be sitting
- 35:38around saying, hey, man, this was really contentious.
- 35:41You know, there are a lot of parts of this that we didn't
- 35:43like. There's a lot of part of the
- 35:44communication that we didn't like.
- 35:45And even if J Mon handled the actual mechanics of the deal
- 35:51correctly, maybe there's some kind of bad blood with how that
- 35:55was taken by the players. And at some point, everybody
- 35:58just says maybe it's better to have a fresh person who hasn't
- 36:03taken some of the, you know, the arrows that other people have
- 36:06throughout the process. You're going to have a new CEO.
- 36:09If there's a deal coming, there's going to be a whole new
- 36:11structure. And to be honest, there's going
- 36:13to be all new challenges for a new person to deal with.
- 36:15You know, there's new TV stuff and new.
- 36:17Yeah. How do you, how do you handle
- 36:19the the new business piece of it?
- 36:21There's definitely going to be somebody who's got a more modern
- 36:25skill set that can be better positioned to do that.
- 36:28So full circle, we got to see Tiger 2008 and we haven't had
- 36:33many of these questions this year talking with you about
- 36:35Rudy, but it got my eyes going a little bit.
- 36:38Masters 2026 Is that the anticipated return for Tiger
- 36:42Woods? That would make the most sense.
- 36:44I mean, I don't think there's any hurry.
- 36:46He doesn't. He doesn't have anything to
- 36:47prove. And I certainly I would be
- 36:49shocked if he decided that the time to go prove something would
- 36:52be to fly across the world and do it somewhere far away.
- 36:55That doesn't make a lot of sense when he could prepare for what
- 36:59will probably be a warm weather event and the one at a golf
- 37:03course where he's really familiar.
- 37:05That makes the most sense to me. I think what we'll all be
- 37:09talking about is what the level of expectation should be.
- 37:13And I think, and we've talked about this a lot on this show,
- 37:17every time you go through one of these rehabs, every time you
- 37:20have more surgery, every time that's I think it's just making
- 37:24the odometer spin faster relative to other people of the
- 37:28same age. You know, you can be incredibly
- 37:31fit and be in your mid 40s and late 40s.
- 37:34I mean, Adam Scott looks like he's a specimen.
- 37:37He's, you know, we didn't even need to think about what it
- 37:40would be like to be 45 or 46 or 47 years old.
- 37:43You know, Justin Rose is kind of in that same age category.
- 37:47Tiger has more mileage on the clock because of all these
- 37:50surgeries. So it remains to be seen, number
- 37:53one, what his body will let him do and #2 how much it'll let him
- 37:56practice. If he can practice enough.
- 37:59There's a whole lot of golf IQ that makes the Masters a
- 38:02tournament that he can be a factor in.
- 38:04But if his ball speed is diminished, if he just can't
- 38:08compress the ball the way he used to, I mean, there's no
- 38:10amount of wishing and hoping that can overcome 50 or 60 or 70
- 38:15yards of space between your ball and the next guy.
- 38:17Can't wait to talk about it, but we've got AUA, British Open and
- 38:21a a Ryder Cup to get to before we get to that point.
- 38:25Take 4 weeks off from the Miller and Condon Show.
- 38:27We'll talk to you the week of the The Open Championship.
- 38:30Thank you Matt Rudy, appreciate everybody.
- 38:33Take care. Yup, see ya Matt Rudy as we take
- 38:35a look at the US Open from a long time golf analyst and golf
- 38:40writer with Golf Digest, etcetera, etcetera.
- 38:44Now doing ghost writing on all of these books.
- 38:46We'll take your time out, come back and finish our #1 Miller
- 38:50and Condon are on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:54Our final couple of minutes. First hour of the program drive
- 38:57coming up at 2:00. Lucas and Sean this afternoon.
- 39:02The duo from 2:00 until 5. Don't have a lot of time that's
- 39:06not worth a ton of time, but I do want to get to it at some
- 39:08point in the program. Connor Mccaffrey's tweet from
- 39:11over the weekend. The Sense deleted tweet.
- 39:13Did he delete it? Yeah.
- 39:14Try to rub me the wrong way? Absolutely.
- 39:18He's I've said many times, he's my favorite Hawkeye basketball
- 39:21player. Not skill, just I love the way
- 39:23he played right. He's always first into the fight
- 39:26and stuck up for his teammates. You should have some guys higher
- 39:28in that list. But I get I probably true,
- 39:30probably true, but I'm not the fan fan that, you know, the 99%
- 39:34of our audiences. I don't know why people tell you
- 39:36still yell go Hawks when they see me like no go dogs, go
- 39:40Quakers, go fever. What?
- 39:43What would is he hurt that dad got fired?
- 39:46That's that's it, right? Yeah, he's butt hurt and.
- 39:49But he knows as well as anybody coaches are hired to be fired.
- 39:52His dad got 15 years at a Big 10 institution.
- 39:55Millions and millions of dollars. $30 million in salary.
- 39:58He lived a life of. He was an athlete.
- 40:03Silver spoon in his mouth. The University of Iowa gave his
- 40:07family that opportunity. Yes, it didn't end the way that
- 40:11they wanted. The fan base had checked out
- 40:13right. It's the reality.
- 40:15He doesn't live in reality. He lives in his own reality.
- 40:18That is frankly dead wrong and I think he continues to show his
- 40:22true colors. That's too bad.
- 40:24It's it was, it was. I was disappointed to see that.
- 40:26You shouldn't be, though, because these things have been
- 40:28out there. And when he was initially fired.
- 40:30Fran OK, be a little. Hurt.
- 40:33Yep, Yep, Yep. Get over it.
- 40:35We're months past that. Right, Your dad's got another
- 40:36job. Yes, you've got a job, the
- 40:40families doing well. Grow up.
- 40:42Yeah, exactly. Girl girlfriend is the most
- 40:44famous female athlete in the world.
- 40:46We're doing fine. And he's had plenty of those a
- 40:48lot of bad looks from Connor Mccaff.
- 40:50That was really bad. I was disappointed to see.
- 40:52ANYWAYS, hour number two, baseball to kick things off Matt
- 40:55Snyder, CBSSports.com, Alec Bussey on Iowa State.
- 41:00Trent will make some plays of the day.
- 41:01Boy, 9 1/2. That's a lot of point I'm not
- 41:04trying to influence. You.
- 41:05I can hear you. Hour 2 coming up next, Miller
- 41:08and Condon are on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
