- 1:00Speaker 1: and this is Political Capital Daily. Well, good morning. Politics
- 1:20Speaker 1: never rests, and neither do we on a Saturday morning.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Political Capital Daily Saturday Extra during this election campaign with
- 1:28Speaker 1: the one and the only early riser himself, Jeff Verrier,
- 1:32Speaker 1: is here. Jeff, thanks for getting up early on a
- 1:34Speaker 1: Saturday morning. Truth be told, you didn't even sleep last night.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's how wild your night probably was.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I haven't slept in 12 days. This exciting election campaign.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Can't miss a second.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Hey, the best campaign strategies come from sleep deprivation, I'm sure.
- 1:52Speaker 1: or the worst, but it's thin line these days in politics.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The best and worst depends on, it depends on the day.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I don't actually, to be totally honest with you.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I was going to say, if you're working, I'm just
- 2:02Speaker 2: going to say, if you're someone who's working on a campaign,
- 2:05Speaker 2: try and get some sleep, drink some orange juice, go
- 2:08Speaker 2: for a walk. This is, these are trying difficult times
- 2:13Speaker 2: and take care of yourself.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That's good advice from your Uncle Jeff. Take care of yourself, kids.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Don't do drugs. Stay in school. I am looking at
- 2:24Speaker 1: my email box here, and I don't see any events
- 2:30Speaker 1: this morning. So I could be missing it, but right
- 2:34Speaker 1: now we don't have any campaign events. It is the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Thanksgiving long weekend. I kind of assumed they'd go through
- 2:39Speaker 1: on Saturday. I'm sure there's something coming up, but maybe
- 2:42Speaker 1: not Sunday, maybe not Monday. Who knows? It's an important
- 2:47Speaker 1: long weekend as we head into the debate week. the
- 2:50Speaker 1: TV debate on Wednesday, but also people don't like being
- 2:54Speaker 1: harassed on Thanksgiving by politicians on their doorstep.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Except that Thanksgiving, these long weekends are, when they happen
- 3:02Speaker 2: during campaign, whether it's Christmas time or Thanksgiving, often this
- 3:07Speaker 2: is where you'll see the vote break because you'll have
- 3:10Speaker 2: family and friends get together, talk about what's happening in
- 3:15Speaker 2: the election and come to a consensus over you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: who they think should form the next government. And so
- 3:23Speaker 2: you'll often see after these weekends where you think nothing's happening,
- 3:27Speaker 2: numbers move or numbers, yeah, numbers move. So we'll see
- 3:31Speaker 2: what happens. Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: The latest numbers that we've got from Liaison, I believe, Liaison?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Liaison.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Liaison.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Strategies, this was on Friday, the Conservatives at 43%, the
- 3:47Speaker 1: NDP at 37%, the Greens at 10%, 1BC at 4%,
- 3:52Speaker 1: Other at 4%, and Centre BC at 3%. That's from
- 3:57Speaker 1: October the 7th to the 8th, 1,000 people, IVR, plus
- 4:02Speaker 1: or minus 3.1 percentage points. So that has the Conservatives
- 4:06Speaker 1: up slightly and the NDP down slightly in a spread there. Jeff,
- 4:09Speaker 1: there's some other polls that are out. all over the place.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I check the aggregate polling firm that, Polywave, that kind
- 4:19Speaker 1: of puts it all into perspective, and we're at 43% Conservative, 39.9% NDP,
- 4:26Speaker 1: 10% Green. So that's still tight. That's still a very
- 4:30Speaker 1: close race, although the Conservatives have been ahead pretty consistently,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but they're not ahead by a lot as we reach
- 4:38Speaker 1: this more than halfway point in the campaign.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah. You got to watch the map though, right? In
- 4:43Speaker 2: the last campaign, it wasn't just Gary Begg winning by
- 4:47Speaker 2: 22 votes that thrust the NDP into a majority government.
- 4:52Speaker 2: There's all sorts of writings where Brennan Day was 98 votes,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think he won by. There's all kinds of NDP
- 5:00Speaker 2: folks who won by dozens to just a few hundred
- 5:07Speaker 2: vote differential and a few the other way too. So
- 5:10Speaker 2: You can look at the horse race numbers at a
- 5:13Speaker 2: high level and say, well, it's still pretty close. But
- 5:17Speaker 2: if you have that kind of spread and you only
- 5:19Speaker 2: need a few hundred votes and a few seats, that
- 5:21Speaker 2: can shift the balance and put a party in government
- 5:27Speaker 2: pretty easily.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I thought we'd play for folks here. what was a
- 5:33Speaker 1: new ad that the BC Conservatives launched for television on Friday.
- 5:38Speaker 1: You may have seen it on your cable television news,
- 5:40Speaker 1: which I assume all of you are listening to. If
- 5:42Speaker 1: you don't, go get cable, people. It's still good. We
- 5:47Speaker 1: like cable on this show. But it was also online,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and I want to play the conservative version first, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: then I'm going to play the NDP version, because the
- 5:58Speaker 1: NDP very quickly took the main line from this conservative
- 6:02Speaker 1: ad and flipped it around and hit a counter ad out,
- 6:06Speaker 1: which was actually quite effective. So we'll just play both
- 6:09Speaker 1: of these for you now.
- 6:13Speaker 3: People say, where did Lauren Dirksen come from? Truth is
- 6:16Speaker 3: I've been.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Here the whole time.
- 6:18Speaker 3: David Eby called this election because he saw an opportunity
- 6:22Speaker 3: for himself. But I see an opportunity for you. After
- 6:26Speaker 3: nine years of the NDP, families are paying more and
- 6:30Speaker 3: getting less. I will get our economy moving, create good jobs,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and get our costs down. These are serious times. I'm
- 6:38Speaker 3: ready to deliver real change to get BC back on track.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And then we have the NDP counter.
- 6:48Speaker 3: People say, where did Lauren Dirksen come from? I've been
- 6:51Speaker 3: here the whole time.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Faith, family, and freedom. The so-called vaccine.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We should not be expecting our kids to eat bugs.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's for sure grooming.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The experimental COVID-19 vaccines are leaky vaccines.
- 7:10Speaker 3: There's a person in our party who's Indigenous. My truth.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Your truth. Oh, my truth.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I've been here the whole time.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I thought that was interesting, Jeff. The first one was
- 7:23Speaker 1: an effective kind of, hey, Lauren Dirksen, you look serious.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And then... The NDP were able to say, yeah, you've
- 7:30Speaker 1: been here the whole time. A whole bunch of crazy
- 7:35Speaker 1: was happening in the party with colleagues. Full on crazy.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So what did you think of that back and forth?
- 7:44Speaker 2: First of all, I had no idea that's how Anna
- 7:46Speaker 2: Kendi actually sounds.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Holy Yakimo, I believe, is what you would say.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I would. I would say that. I would also say
- 7:52Speaker 1: sweet mother of pearl. But holy Yakimo is very well put.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I would say that you can tell from the ads
- 8:00Speaker 2: what the strategies of the campaign are. You look at
- 8:05Speaker 2: the conservative one, and folks in the conservative bubble have
- 8:11Speaker 2: been fawning over it on social media. And I think
- 8:14Speaker 2: that's because it is kind of a dull ad, right?
- 8:18Speaker 2: And you've got this dull orange saying dull, commonsensical truisms.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But that's exactly what they need to do. The knock
- 8:30Speaker 2: on them, what they're fighting against is should this ragtag bunch,
- 8:35Speaker 2: have they got their act together and are they ready
- 8:37Speaker 2: to govern? So dull Lorne is right. It's what they
- 8:45Speaker 2: ought to be doing. And the NDPs, look, they're not
- 8:49Speaker 2: running against Lorne Dirksen. I think that's what this ad
- 8:52Speaker 2: makes clear. They're running against the worst of the conservative party.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So they took what I think was a kind of,
- 8:59Speaker 2: folks thought it was clever, but it was also kind of,
- 9:02Speaker 2: you know, you can kind of tell when you're in
- 9:04Speaker 2: a debate and someone lands a line that you're just like,
- 9:07Speaker 2: I can riff off of that.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's right. Kids eating bugs.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I forgot that. That was amazing. But you see
- 9:16Speaker 2: what they're, they're trying to like focus on the, what
- 9:19Speaker 2: they would call the extreme or radical parts of the
- 9:24Speaker 2: conservative party, draw attention to those and try and, dampen down, uh,
- 9:29Speaker 2: the support amongst voters who are, you know, on the
- 9:32Speaker 2: fence and it would say, well, maybe these guys, yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 2: I don't, I don't like the NDP, but I don't
- 9:38Speaker 2: think these guys, these other guys need to spend some
- 9:41Speaker 2: time in opposition before they're ready to govern. Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And it'll be a part of the, uh, television debate strategy,
- 9:48Speaker 1: that same sort of thing. I think, um, the dull
- 9:51Speaker 1: Lorne is going to need to show up and the
- 9:55Speaker 1: NDP leader is going to try and paint him as
- 9:57Speaker 1: so dull that he's allowed, you know, the mold of
- 10:01Speaker 1: crazy to spring up around him in his party. And
- 10:04Speaker 1: he's just kind of the apparatus at the front of
- 10:09Speaker 1: the court of jesters. So that matchup we'll talk more
- 10:13Speaker 1: about as we get a little bit closer to the
- 10:16Speaker 1: TV debate. Let's take a quick break and then we
- 10:18Speaker 1: get some more topics coming up right after the break. Well,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Political Capital daily, free each and every morning, even on
- 10:32Speaker 1: a Saturday, thanks to our premier sponsor this season, Airbnb.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Over 55% of Airbnb hosts say hosting on Airbnb has
- 10:40Speaker 1: helped them stay in their home. For many British Columbians,
- 10:44Speaker 1: the income they earn by sharing their home enables them
- 10:46Speaker 1: to keep up with rising costs of living across the province.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Thanks to Airbnb for its support.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Back to the show.
- 10:59Speaker 1: All right, Jeff, we had some announcements on Friday just
- 11:02Speaker 1: kind of worth going through here. The New Democrats were
- 11:05Speaker 1: up talking about health care and David Eby talking about
- 11:09Speaker 1: incentivizing doctors to do same-day appointments, evening appointments, weekend appointments.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I assume incentives are money in terms of billing. He
- 11:18Speaker 1: didn't get into specifics on that. Talked about 20 new
- 11:21Speaker 1: team-based primary care clinics across the province, including health. UPCCs,
- 11:26Speaker 1: the urgent primary care centers, and a fast track plan
- 11:29Speaker 1: to get international graduates accelerated into bridging to practice, which
- 11:34Speaker 1: I was a little surprised about. I assumed we had
- 11:36Speaker 1: done everything humanly possible at this point to get internationally
- 11:40Speaker 1: trained doctors into the field, but apparently not because there's
- 11:42Speaker 1: now an accelerated bridging to practice program. I don't know
- 11:46Speaker 1: why we didn't have this earlier, but that is now
- 11:50Speaker 1: in place according to the NDP. So the NDP focusing
- 11:54Speaker 1: on healthcare and the conservatives talking about seniors care, talking
- 11:57Speaker 1: about building long-term care homes, including the ones that the
- 12:00Speaker 1: NDP had delayed, the free shingles vaccine, which the NDP
- 12:04Speaker 1: had already announced, support for at-home care, support for handy dart,
- 12:11Speaker 1: reversing the property tax deferment program change in the budget
- 12:15Speaker 1: that took the ability for seniors to defer their property
- 12:18Speaker 1: tax at a rate of a prime minus 2% and
- 12:20Speaker 1: turned it into prime plus 2%. And then also, I
- 12:26Speaker 1: thought it was kind of interesting saying that they will
- 12:28Speaker 1: provide public funding for 7,200 people on the wait lists
- 12:32Speaker 1: right now, but not necessarily public spaces, public funding for
- 12:37Speaker 1: qualified providers. Many, many, many, many of the seniors care
- 12:43Speaker 1: spots in the province are private, funded using public money
- 12:47Speaker 1: per bed. So the conservatives careful in their language on that.
- 12:51Speaker 1: A lot of healthcare, First kind of senior stuff we've
- 12:53Speaker 1: seen a little bit other than the NDP's bizarre press
- 12:57Speaker 1: conference in a curling club announcing the free shingles vaccine,
- 13:00Speaker 1: which I still don't get, but healthcare kind of a
- 13:03Speaker 1: big focus of the NDP recently and the conservatives jumping
- 13:06Speaker 1: on it as well.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, seniors vote.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Damn right they do. Not like those young kids never
- 13:14Speaker 1: get around to voting out skateboarding all the time and,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you know, on their bikes whipping around the neighborhood.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yeah, all those young folks in the 18 to 34
- 13:23Speaker 2: demographic who are tired of the boomers getting everything, get
- 13:26Speaker 2: out and vote.
- 13:27Speaker 1: You can take over if they voted in the correct numbers.
- 13:30Speaker 1: They weren't too busy skateboarding.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but the NDP health care is geared at, I think,
- 13:38Speaker 2: a combination of seniors. It's targeted at left flank of
- 13:48Speaker 2: the party. And it's targeted at Greens. Greens, if you've
- 13:53Speaker 2: followed them, they keep talking about community health centers. It
- 13:57Speaker 2: was in their CARGA deal with the NDP that they
- 14:00Speaker 2: were going to advance community health centers. And urgent primary
- 14:04Speaker 2: care centers aren't the same as community health centers, but
- 14:08Speaker 2: they sure sound the same as that. And so if
- 14:10Speaker 2: you're a Green voter and you're looking at conservatives on
- 14:12Speaker 2: the way to forming a government and the NDP has
- 14:16Speaker 2: got something in their platform on healthcare. That's pretty similar
- 14:19Speaker 2: to something that you care about. Maybe the NDP thinks
- 14:22Speaker 2: you can get those folks to switch their votes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: That is a theme. Uh, sometimes in the NDP, just
- 14:29Speaker 1: flirting with the language of the greens, as Emily Lohan
- 14:31Speaker 1: put it the other day, stealing the language of the left, uh,
- 14:34Speaker 1: on the sort of class battle. I'll be interested to
- 14:36Speaker 1: see the other healthcare promise the greens had in Carga.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It never got off the ground was coverage for councilors, uh,
- 14:43Speaker 1: under MSP that kind of mental health coverage within the
- 14:46Speaker 1: publicly paid system there was a whole bunch of logistical
- 14:50Speaker 1: problems identified like counselors aren't certified in a common way
- 14:54Speaker 1: and how would you do it but I wonder if
- 14:56Speaker 1: the NDP circle back on something like that too and
- 14:58Speaker 1: pick up some of the green ideas and repurpose them
- 15:02Speaker 1: as their own I don't know but it feels like
- 15:04Speaker 1: it's not the last we've heard of health care and
- 15:06Speaker 1: health care promises on this campaign.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Yeah no I think you're right and I think the
- 15:11Speaker 2: greens have a point mental health care is healthcare and, uh, um,
- 15:18Speaker 2: and day and age when it's, when folks are struggling
- 15:20Speaker 2: with that, uh, in all sorts of ways, uh, it's
- 15:24Speaker 2: a good preventative way to, to keep people healthy and
- 15:29Speaker 2: out of difficult spots in their lives. And, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 2: greens are onto something there. Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 1: There's just the logistics of figuring it out and probably
- 15:36Speaker 1: the cost as well, but, uh, nobody has figured out
- 15:40Speaker 1: what their, costs are because we haven't seen the costed platform.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I don't, do you have any thought, like Jeff, any
- 15:45Speaker 1: guess on when you think we might see costed platforms?
- 15:49Speaker 1: We have big days coming up with the Wednesday TV
- 15:52Speaker 1: leaders debate. We have advanced voting starting next Friday. I
- 15:55Speaker 1: think the 16th, um, do we see platforms before either
- 15:59Speaker 1: of those two dates?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Do you think, or, um, you may see platforms. I'd
- 16:04Speaker 2: be shocked if they were costed. Um, the conservative one, um,
- 16:10Speaker 2: is uh promising and i'll go it's it's you know
- 16:14Speaker 2: how you pay for it is something that i think
- 16:17Speaker 2: both parties will struggle with i think particularly the conservatives
- 16:20Speaker 2: because they're promising a three to four billion dollar uh
- 16:24Speaker 2: tax cut which would boost the deficit to 17 billion
- 16:29Speaker 2: dollars and they've got you know other tax cuts that
- 16:33Speaker 2: they've they promised uh as well and they're saying they're
- 16:36Speaker 2: gonna fund that through growth which is Hard to show
- 16:41Speaker 2: in a fully costed, credible platform costing. Yeah. So they
- 16:48Speaker 2: don't want to give up their message on growth as
- 16:51Speaker 2: the source of all revenue for everything. And I just
- 16:57Speaker 2: don't think the NDP want to talk about deficits and debt.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I don't think so. No one really wants to talk
- 17:01Speaker 1: about it at this point. Maybe they'll both just agree
- 17:04Speaker 1: to just not talk about each other's gigantic.
- 17:06Speaker 2: No one said when they're going to balance the budget, right?
- 17:09Speaker 2: No one- has answered that question.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I believe Center BC said over two terms? The Greens
- 17:16Speaker 1: could balance the budget instantly with their first year wealth
- 17:19Speaker 1: tax that would generate $ 22 billion, which is the only
- 17:25Speaker 1: balance thing that I've seen from any party. Just tax
- 17:28Speaker 1: the heck, tax the absolute bejesus out of wealth on
- 17:31Speaker 1: year one and flood the zone with money. Make it
- 17:34Speaker 1: rain cash and you balance.
- 17:35Speaker 2: So what you're saying is you're calling a center BC,
- 17:39Speaker 2: BC green coalition government.
- 17:41Speaker 1: That's right. BC greens, uh, the center BC and the
- 17:45Speaker 1: marijuana sex party all get together and, uh, form a
- 17:48Speaker 1: coalition government that governs.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Andrew Weaver is going to be in cabinet. Yeah.
- 17:53Speaker 1: They're going to govern for 15, 20 years, a dynasty.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah. It's going to be amazing.
- 17:58Speaker 1: The center green weed party is going to, it's going
- 18:02Speaker 1: to be, I couldn't combine those names in any way.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And that was the most PG version of it. So, uh, Yeah, okay. Well,
- 18:09Speaker 1: it's interesting times. It feels like this election's gone on forever,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and yet also being at past the halfway point, I
- 18:16Speaker 1: stop and think, man, we haven't really accomplished a lot
- 18:20Speaker 1: in this election campaign. And we got the municipal one.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Two weeks from today.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, two weeks from, one week from today is, I
- 18:28Speaker 2: think it's one week from today is the local government ones,
- 18:31Speaker 2: and two weeks from today is the provincial one. So
- 18:34Speaker 2: it's sneaking up on us. My God. Yeah. Oh, my God.
- 18:37Speaker 1: All right. Well, you'll be there each and every day
- 18:40Speaker 1: along the way. Jeff, thanks for getting up and doing
- 18:43Speaker 1: the show so early in the morning. I appreciate it.
- 18:46Speaker 2: No problem. I'm going back to bed.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Okay, great. You guys can go back to bed, too,
- 18:50Speaker 1: unless the sounds of our dulcet tones arose you from
- 18:54Speaker 1: your slumber and now you can't sleep like a shot
- 18:56Speaker 1: of caffeine in your veins. That's fine. Our show does
- 18:58Speaker 1: do that. There's a warning label. from the Surgeon General
- 19:02Speaker 1: on the package for the show. So you might need
- 19:03Speaker 1: to stay up for the rest of the day. We'll
- 19:06Speaker 1: be back, not on Monday. It's a holiday, but we
- 19:08Speaker 1: will be back on Tuesday with Political Capital Daily. We'll
- 19:11Speaker 1: see you then.
