- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. Earlier today, Junior asked me about association
- 0:05Speaker 1: with different types of people, and I was reminded of
- 0:10Speaker 1: an exercise a guy had done one time where he
- 0:14Speaker 1: asked everybody to write on a piece of paper the
- 0:17Speaker 1: names of your five closest associates and friends, and then
- 0:22Speaker 1: describe them positive and negative, you know, smart, loving, caring,
- 0:29Speaker 1: a loof, lazy, whatever the character this is. And he said,
- 0:34Speaker 1: when you get through describing those five friends, you've just
- 0:39Speaker 1: described yourself. Because your friends, you get to pick the
- 0:44Speaker 1: people you call friends, and you normally pick friends because
- 0:48Speaker 1: you all have things in common. So when you describe
- 0:52Speaker 1: your five closest associates, you've described yourself. And I found
- 0:57Speaker 1: that to be true back then, and so I went wow.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I was listening to my buddy John Hope Bryant on
- 1:06Speaker 1: a podcast and he made the statement, he said, if
- 1:09Speaker 1: you hang around nine broke people, you will become number ten.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And you know what, man, that makes so much sense.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Association brings on participation, and as you select your friends,
- 1:24Speaker 1: you get to pick. Now, stop that old, that old
- 1:29Speaker 1: ignorant mess. You got to keep it real. Remember where
- 1:33Speaker 1: you come from. Yeah, it's cool to remember where you
- 1:36Speaker 1: come from. But you ain't got to stay where you're from.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You can keep parts of where you're from, but you
- 1:44Speaker 1: got to move on. In order to grow, you are
- 1:48Speaker 1: going to have to go. I don't know anybody who
- 1:52Speaker 1: has grown but has stayed the same. It can't happen
- 1:59Speaker 1: in order to grow. Oh, you have to go. I
- 2:03Speaker 1: know very few people who reach complete fame in their hometown.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I very rarely hear this because somehow you gotta go
- 2:14Speaker 1: where people see you differently. So what I'm saying to
- 2:20Speaker 1: you is this, if association brings on participation, pay very
- 2:26Speaker 1: close attention to who you associate with. Start picking better friends,
- 2:33Speaker 1: start picking better people to hang out with. And you
- 2:36Speaker 1: know what, don't just have people to hang out with
- 2:39Speaker 1: just to have somebody to hang out with. That's a
- 2:42Speaker 1: dangerous play. Do you know that it's okay to go
- 2:46Speaker 1: somewhere and sit down and be by yourself. At least
- 2:50Speaker 1: you get to have your own thoughts, You get to
- 2:54Speaker 1: be in your own mood. What I have learned to
- 2:58Speaker 1: do is I've this ass siated myself with people that
- 3:02Speaker 1: bring me. No that come into my life to destroy
- 3:05Speaker 1: my peace. If you are in my life to mess
- 3:08Speaker 1: with my piece you out, you out, and I don't
- 3:11Speaker 1: have to entertain you at all. Bye. No, man, I
- 3:16Speaker 1: don't have no plan. I had a kid that, no
- 3:18Speaker 1: matter what I did for him, he didn't listen to me.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And I was mentoring him, and every time he came around,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I was trying to menture this kid. He always had
- 3:27Speaker 1: some pushback, but no matter what I said. And so
- 3:32Speaker 1: one day I was living in Chicago and he gave
- 3:35Speaker 1: me a call late at night and it was one
- 3:38Speaker 1: of the kids that had come to my camp, and
- 3:40Speaker 1: I could tell he was in a club somewhere. And
- 3:43Speaker 1: he gave me a call one night, and he had
- 3:46Speaker 1: somebody around him because he said I heard the guy say, man,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you got Steve Harvey's number. This is a young kid
- 3:55Speaker 1: I was mentoring, and so I was talking to him
- 3:59Speaker 1: and he said, well, I don't agree with that, Steve.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And it's the first time he had ever called me Steve.
- 4:07Speaker 1: He had always been calling mister Harvey the whole time,
- 4:10Speaker 1: so I knew he was around somebody flexing. So I
- 4:13Speaker 1: don't agree with that, Steve. I said, oh, okay, that's different.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I say, well, what is it you don't agree with?
- 4:19Speaker 1: You don't tell me what to do like that? And
- 4:23Speaker 1: I went, wow, cause it was he just all of
- 4:26Speaker 1: a sudden he became antagonistic and all of a sudden, man,
- 4:29Speaker 1: he was just showing off, I said, little man, I said,
- 4:33Speaker 1: watch your mouth now, I say, because I can tell
- 4:35Speaker 1: you flexing in front of somebody. I said, but don't
- 4:37Speaker 1: let this flex cost you something. Now, Oh, what's gonna
- 4:41Speaker 1: cost me? You ain't you ain't never. You ain't never
- 4:44Speaker 1: gave me no money or nothing. Okay, cool. I may
- 4:47Speaker 1: not have, but this advice I've been passing out that's
- 4:50Speaker 1: been trying to get you on the right track. We finish.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Stop that right now, because I see you right now,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you somewhere else, take your little advice. I don't need
- 4:57Speaker 1: your advice. I said, bro, ain't no problem. You ain't
- 4:59Speaker 1: got to get it no more. He called me three
- 5:03Speaker 1: years later. He said, mister Harvey, I need you to
- 5:06Speaker 1: help me. I said, oh, you need some help now,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I said, what's somebody? Young man? He said, my bond.
- 5:15Speaker 1: My bond is a half a million dollars. I need
- 5:18Speaker 1: fifty thousand dollars. Wow. I said, what you're in for? Man?
- 5:26Speaker 1: He said, oh, I'm robbery? I said, brother, did I
- 5:29Speaker 1: tell you did I not tell you that if you
- 5:33Speaker 1: kept hanging with them, dudes, what you was gonna do?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Association brings on participation. Yeah, I ain't got no fifty
- 5:43Speaker 1: thousand for you because I may never see this fifty again.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I'm just saying that long story to just tell you,
- 5:51Speaker 1: don't let people destroy your peace. You don't have to
- 5:56Speaker 1: be the one to go to person all the time,
- 5:59Speaker 1: especially if it destroys your peace. Get on with yourself.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Pick better friends, get in a better circle. Hang with
- 6:06Speaker 1: people is like mine to trying to go somewhere like
- 6:09Speaker 1: you for y'all. All right, goos, those are my closing remarks.
