- 0:00When you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's, sometimes it feels like you have
- 0:04absolutely no energy, none.
- 0:08And one of the reasons for that is maybe not your thyroid.
- 0:12Maybe your thyroid is producing enough thyroid hormone, T4, but it's not getting
- 0:17converted to the type that your body can use, the T3.
- 0:20If you're short on T3, you're going to be short on everything that relies on
- 0:25that little ignition switch for the cell, like energy.
- 0:28So today I'm going to answer that question of what stops T4 from converting
- 0:34to T3 or what can I do to help my body convert T4 to T3 again?
- 0:41Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 0:43I am Esther. I am a registered nurse. I'm a holistic health educator and I'm a mom of four.
- 0:49I live in the country and I have a whole bunch chickens.
- 0:53The weather right now, it's really weird.
- 0:56I'm recording this, you know, in the middle of winter, except the weather doesn't know that it's winter.
- 1:02And therefore my chickens don't know that it's winter either.
- 1:04So the roosters are just crowing a ton. I do have a little sound shield around
- 1:09my microphone, so hopefully you won't hear them, but it's about every three
- 1:12seconds I can hear the roosters crowing.
- 1:14So I hope that you don't hear them. And if you do, I hope it just makes makes you smile.
- 1:18So on this episode, we're going to talk about T4 to T3.
- 1:22And just like always, I'm going to give you simple, sustainable strategies,
- 1:27because I always want you to leave knowing that you can do something for your health.
- 1:32I posted a picture on Instagram the other day, and it was basically like,
- 1:37don't wait for a diagnosis.
- 1:39People wait, or they're seeking a diagnosis on average for four years before
- 1:44they find out that they have Hashimoto's or even they have hypothyroid.
- 1:49And then it takes longer to find out that that's caused by Hashimoto's. And it
- 1:54all of that time during those four years and those four different specialists,
- 1:59which is on average, you can be doing things for your health.
- 2:03Like let's just take the very basic things, sleep.
- 2:06We all need sleep and that's what our bodies heal and restore and renew. So we need sleep.
- 2:11You can be doing that. You can be prioritizing that all the time,
- 2:14not just after you get a diagnosis.
- 2:16You know, cutting out processed foods, we can be doing that all of of the time,
- 2:20not just after we get a diagnosis.
- 2:22It's easier sometimes to be looking for ways to help after you have a diagnosis
- 2:27because you know more what you're attacking.
- 2:30But then of course, there's also a lot of situations where you'll get a diagnosis
- 2:34of Hashimoto's or hypothyroid, and you don't know what caused it.
- 2:37So you don't know how to fix it. You don't know what those root causes are.
- 2:40And that's why I created a workshop to help you figure out what your root causes
- 2:45are so that you know exactly what to do.
- 2:47So head down to the show notes. There's a link or you can head over to healthwithhashimotos.com
- 2:52and you can sign up for that free workshop so you can figure out what your root causes are.
- 2:57But today, let's talk about T4 to T3 conversion.
- 3:02Now, you might need a quick refresher. That's okay.
- 3:05Episode three is all about your labs and what the different things do.
- 3:10But essentially, you need to know this. Every single cell needs a little spark
- 3:13plug in order to start to activate that cell, right?
- 3:17And it is your T3 that is that spark plug.
- 3:22However, your thyroid creates T4, and then that has to be converted in order to be able to be used.
- 3:29Sometimes the T4 gets converted to the brakes instead.
- 3:34You know, it's like a parent giving giving their overtired kid a nap instead of caffeine.
- 3:39They're like, no, you want more energy, you want to do stuff,
- 3:42but I know that you need a nap because you are exhausted and I'm not going to give you this caffeine.
- 3:48That is kind of what reverse T3 is. It's the T4 getting converted to the brakes system.
- 3:54It's to help you slow down so that you have to prioritize rest and healing.
- 3:58And really what we all want is T3 is more energy, the ability to continue do,
- 4:04do, do, do doing because we have a lot to do.
- 4:07We are very busy. We have a lot of different things on our plates.
- 4:11So naturally, we want to maintain our energy. We want to build that energy so we can get things done.
- 4:17So let's talk about why T4 to T3 conversion doesn't happen.
- 4:24And the main place that T4 is converted is your liver.
- 4:29So obviously, one of the things that we're going to focus on is our liver health
- 4:35and helping our liver to not be congested.
- 4:38Episode 69 is primarily about estrogen, but estrogen has to do with the liver
- 4:46because the liver processes estrogen.
- 4:49So I talked a lot about liver health. I gave you a lot of tips in episode 69.
- 4:53I do have the link to that episode down in the show notes, but basically you
- 4:58want to help your liver to do what your liver is supposed I hear people,
- 5:03especially in the medical world.
- 5:06Talk about your body as if we were like 200, 300 years ago.
- 5:11And they're like, your liver, of course, it's the primary detox organ and it
- 5:15can do what it's supposed to do. Why are you talking about liver health?
- 5:18Why are you talking about supporting the liver? Why are you talking about liver congestion?
- 5:23Well, it's because we live in the 2020s where we are surrounded by different
- 5:29environmental chemicals and toxins that our bodies have to process and deal with.
- 5:34These are things things that nobody was exposed to even 50, 60, 70 years ago.
- 5:40There are more and more put on the market every single day.
- 5:44It's kind of scary to look up the statistics of how many different chemicals
- 5:48are put into our world, are created every single year. It's absolutely crazy.
- 5:54So we want to support our livers.
- 5:57I'm not going to go through all of those things because that That was pretty
- 6:00much an entire podcast episode in episode 69.
- 6:04So head back there and I will tell you about liver health there.
- 6:08The second thing is if you are not converting T4 to T3 well,
- 6:14it could be because you don't have the ingredients.
- 6:17You need selenium. Selenium helps your body convert T4 to T3.
- 6:23And when I first started looking into thyroid stuff, that was the first thing I read.
- 6:29Or one of the first things was like you need 200
- 6:32oh shoot I don't know if it's micrograms or
- 6:35milligrams it's 200 of selenium every day
- 6:38which is approximately two brazil nuts every single day well that's pretty easy
- 6:43to do right if you like brazil nuts a lot of supplements also have selenium
- 6:48in them especially the thyroid supplements because selenium is required for
- 6:53that conversion For your body to convert the inactive form, the T4 to T3,
- 6:58you have to have selenium and you have to have enough selenium.
- 7:03So I gave you liver congestion. That's the biggest problem in this conversion.
- 7:07And selenium is like the easiest one to tackle. So I gave you both ends of the spectrum.
- 7:12Now let's go towards the middle. So another huge thing that can inhibit that
- 7:17conversion, it can stop the conversion or slow the conversion of T4 to T3 is stress.
- 7:24It's specifically your stress hormone, the cortisol, and we have talked about that before.
- 7:30But when your cortisol is up, it has this like negative feedback loop.
- 7:35So, you know, it just keeps going round and round and round and it's not good.
- 7:40It slows your T4 to T3 or it stops it.
- 7:45It makes your body say, nope, we're going to convert it to reverse T3 because
- 7:50we need to put the brakes on.
- 7:52So addressing our stress levels and addressing are adrenals,
- 7:56which are the little glands that put out the stress hormones.
- 7:59That is really important.
- 8:00Another problem of increased stress is when your body is in that stressed mode,
- 8:06it can cause your cells to be less receptive to those thyroid hormones.
- 8:13So even if you are making an FT4 and then you're converting it to T3 adequately.
- 8:21Your actual tissues, shoes, your actual cells might be less sensitive.
- 8:25And so then you can still feel like you have hypothyroid.
- 8:29So there's so much going on. And when I was doing the research for this episode,
- 8:34I was just struck over and over, like everything I would read,
- 8:38it would remind me that everything is related.
- 8:40You really cannot work on just one thing.
- 8:44Your body just doesn't work that way. Your body, mind, spirit,
- 8:47diet, environment is all connected.
- 8:49You are a whole person. That's why I have that five-petaled flower in my logo, because you're whole.
- 8:55Each of those is connected, and yet it goes deeper.
- 8:59Like, you know, selenium is something that you eat.
- 9:03It's related to your diet, of course, but then that impacts how your body converts
- 9:09T4 to T3, and when you're stressed, that impacts it.
- 9:13But then there's so much more. I took notes.
- 9:17I actually had to have chat GPT do this one for me, which is just funny.
- 9:24I read it like three times and it was making sense in my head,
- 9:27but it's like, oh my goodness, I am just tired and I just want this in simple terms.
- 9:33So I told chat GPT, like put this in simple terms for me.
- 9:37And basically what What this research article said was that thyroid hormones
- 9:43and then minerals in things like iodine, selenium, iron, copper, zinc,
- 9:48calcium, magnesium, they all play a role in tons of things, including the thyroid.
- 9:55And then it went on to say how all of these different things were related to
- 9:59something else, which was related to something else.
- 10:01And then that closed the circle.
- 10:05And then then those impacted autoimmune
- 10:08thyroid problems. It was this like really long convoluted thing.
- 10:11And maybe I will do a future episode about all of these things because it was a fascinating article.
- 10:17I just had to read it a couple times and it's still at that high level where
- 10:20obviously if I had to put it into chat GPT, like I can't explain it super simply
- 10:26yet, but I will get there. I
- 10:28Anyway, that article, it was super fascinating because what they ended up saying,
- 10:34oh my goodness, this is maybe going to drive you as crazy as it drove me crazy.
- 10:38They said, we don't have a medicine for this yet.
- 10:41So we're going to have to keep working on looking at how to give your body a
- 10:47boost with all of the other things and putting them all together.
- 10:51And that's not how medicine likes to work. Medicine doesn't like to say you
- 10:55need a whole bunch of things.
- 10:57They like to say this is one problem with one solution.
- 11:01Looking at it and seeing there is one problem, and you're going to need a blend
- 11:06of iodine, selenium, zinc, magnesium, decreased stress, all of this stuff in
- 11:12order to attack one problem.
- 11:14Well, that's not how medicine works. So the article, or sorry,
- 11:19the research paper, they sounded fairly frustrated at the end,
- 11:22like basically saying, we don't have a medicine for this, so we're going to keep on working.
- 11:27And yet everything they had talked about in that article were things that we
- 11:32know that we can address.
- 11:34For example, one of them was oxidative stress.
- 11:37When your cells are working, just like a car, when it's working,
- 11:41it puts out exhaust, right?
- 11:43Your cells kind of put out exhaust that when they're working,
- 11:47they create what are are called free radicals.
- 11:49And those, just like your exhaust, it causes pollution.
- 11:54And the pollution in your cells is just like a browning of a banana or rust
- 11:58on a car. It's oxidative stress.
- 12:01And we know that we can clean it up.
- 12:04I talk about protandum NRF2 a lot because research, like multiple dozens of
- 12:10research studies have shown us how it helps.
- 12:14Protandum NRF2, it decreases your oxidative stress by 40% in 30 days.
- 12:21And this article is like, yeah, oxidative stress is one problem and we need
- 12:26to work on it, but we don't have a medicine for it yet.
- 12:29Well, no, because herbs help.
- 12:32Protandim NRF2 is a blend of five herbs and they're very common herbs.
- 12:36And in fact, in NRF2, in that activator, they're in really small quantities
- 12:41and medicine doesn't like that that either.
- 12:43Western medicine is like, go big or go home.
- 12:46Well, sometimes you don't have to go big. Sometimes small, simple,
- 12:50sustainable things are what works.
- 12:53Anyway, back to T4 and T3. I got myself all fired up. All right.
- 12:58So I was talking about stress.
- 13:00Because stress is related to everything. Stress, you know, makes your tissues
- 13:04less receptive to the thyroid hormones. It also stops the conversion.
- 13:10So what can you do about your adrenals and about the stress?
- 13:14I have a bunch of episodes, but today I will tell you specifically about episode
- 13:1924, because I did talk about your adrenal glands in 24.
- 13:24I have other episodes about stress as well, but episode 24 is about your adrenals
- 13:30and chronic stress, and I can give you some tips in there.
- 13:32Most likely, I also reference the other stress episodes I've done because there's a bunch.
- 13:38One thing that I have not mentioned on the stress episodes is something I pinned
- 13:42to my Instagram or saved to my Instagram the other day.
- 13:45I need to do a reel or a post about it, and it's reading books,
- 13:49reading fiction books, like, you know, not fact books, but fiction stories.
- 13:54It decreases your stress and it helps your overall health.
- 13:58So I love to read. I absolutely love to read. It is like my go-to.
- 14:03I don't watch TV very much. I don't watch TV hardly at all, but I read books
- 14:08almost every single night.
- 14:09I am tucked in my bed reading until I fall asleep or until I get tired and I
- 14:13put my book down because I know that I will stay awake as long as the book is
- 14:18open. So I do close the book.
- 14:19Anyway, books can help you lower stress and I don't think I've talked about
- 14:23that in any of the the stress episodes.
- 14:25My goodness, I am all over today. So back to T4 to T3. We're decreasing stress.
- 14:31We're focusing on our adrenals. We're focusing on our liver.
- 14:34We're eating Brazil nuts or making sure that we get enough selenium.
- 14:39And then here's something that you cannot change, and that is genetic mutations.
- 14:44You might have heard of the MTHFR gene mutation.
- 14:49There's a lot lot more talk about that. But there's another genetic mutation, and it is really long.
- 14:56The best I could find for a name, it's THR92ALADIO2 polymorphism.
- 15:06It's super long, right?
- 15:08Basically, if you have this genetic mutation, which according to one study I
- 15:13read, one in five people has it, you might not be able to adequately convert
- 15:18T4 to T3. So what does that mean for you?
- 15:21Well, it means you don't have to go get genetic testing to figure this out.
- 15:26Maybe you want to, and that's okay.
- 15:28But if you feel like you've been taking T4, if you've been taking levothyroxine,
- 15:34synthroid, things that are just T4,
- 15:36and you're not feeling like you have enough energy, or you're taking it and
- 15:41you get your blood drawn and you see that your free T3.
- 15:46Free meaning it's available in your blood for your cells to like reach out and grab.
- 15:50If your free T3 is still low, then your body might not be converting and you
- 15:56can address it with the other ways that I've talked about, but you might just need T3.
- 16:02And so that would be armor or that would be some blend of T4 and T3 or it's
- 16:10taking a T4 and then adding a different T3 with it.
- 16:15Now T3 has a bad rap in the medical world because back I think in the 1980s it was used wrongly.
- 16:22It was used by people who wanted extra energy and who wanted to lose weight.
- 16:26So they falsely you know increased it and then they had side effects because
- 16:32then you're going to have heart palpitations and you're going to have anxiety
- 16:35and you're going to have all of these crazy hyperthyroid symptoms which are not good.
- 16:40Your thyroid and your thyroid hormones need to be in the Goldilocks range.
- 16:45So when people were using this T3 and using it wrongly, then it got this reputation
- 16:49of being really harmful.
- 16:51It's not harmful. It's harmful if it's used wrong and you might need it.
- 16:57So there are pills of T3 and like I said, there's already combinations and there's
- 17:03also like a cream and some people find that they do a cream better.
- 17:08Now for that prescription, you might have to dig around for a different doctor
- 17:13or a compounding pharmacy.
- 17:15You might have to really be a patient advocate for that one because it's not as common.
- 17:21But in the research and in the books that I have read, sometimes that cream
- 17:25works better because T3 is a very fast acting.
- 17:29So if you put it on a cream, then it absorbs a little bit slower through your
- 17:33skin and it just is more sustained energy throughout the day.
- 17:38That is something to have a conversation with your doctor about.
- 17:41I am not your doctor. I'm not prescribing. I'm not recommending.
- 17:44But I am empowering you to have information and knowledge so that you know what
- 17:48to talk to your doctor about.
- 17:50So the main things that stop T4 to T3 conversion would be number one,
- 17:56your liver. Number two, your stress.
- 17:59Number three, you don't have the ingredients like selenium. And then there's that genetic mutation.
- 18:05So what can you do? will make sure that you're getting the ingredients.
- 18:09Like vitamin A, it's essential for liver function and you can't get it if you're
- 18:15doing a vegan diet. I'm sorry.
- 18:17You can get beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A, but to have adequate
- 18:24levels of vitamin A, you do need some animal sources.
- 18:27And that is why I believe that we are seeing
- 18:30more and more thyroid problems in vegans in
- 18:34people who follow a vegan diet for many years
- 18:37often they will develop problems and
- 18:40that is something really hard for people to hear because being vegan is usually
- 18:45more about diet more it's about more than diet it's about you know how you feel
- 18:50about animals and the environment and different things however being vegan means
- 18:55that you might not be getting the exact nutrients nutrients that you need.
- 18:59So vitamin A is one example of a nutrient that you need in order to have your
- 19:04liver work, in order to convert T4 to T3.
- 19:07Magnesium is another one. It is the number one deficiency in the Western world
- 19:13and it controls like 300, over 300 different functions in the body.
- 19:19Magnesium is a mineral. It's so important for everything.
- 19:23And one of those 300 functions is conversion from T4 to T3. So we really need
- 19:28to focus on getting everything.
- 19:30Now there's a whole lot of forms of magnesium and usually when when you're supplementing
- 19:35with magnesium, it's more than you can get in a multivitamin.
- 19:37Most multivitamins or multinutrients do have some magnesium,
- 19:41but not enough. It's one that you have to take extra.
- 19:44I take mine at bedtime. I take a blend that has calcium and magnesium,
- 19:48and then it has multiple kinds of magnesium in it. And it helps me sleep better.
- 19:52I feel like my muscles are more relaxed when I take it. I started taking it
- 19:57back when I was pregnant.
- 19:59I've I've been pregnant five times. I have four kids, one miscarriage.
- 20:02And you know that third trimester when you're giving so many minerals to your
- 20:06baby as it's growing, like all of a sudden you have leg cramps and restless
- 20:11legs and it is just horrible.
- 20:13I started taking that blend when I was pregnant and it was so good.
- 20:18My legs were fine when I was taking it. And so I've been a believer in that
- 20:22one ever since, maybe even before.
- 20:24Anyway, so the magnesium, you're going to take it at night if you choose to supplement it.
- 20:28You just don't want to take it with your thyroid medications because there can be some interactions.
- 20:34So that is what I have for you today. There are a lot of reasons why your T4
- 20:38might not be converting to T3, but most of them are things that we've talked about before.
- 20:44Your liver, your stress, and your nutrients.
- 20:47And then of course there's that genetic mutation, which you can't do anything about.
- 20:52You just have to observe and then take action and say maybe this is going on. Can we try this?
- 20:58Or maybe you would say to your doctor or provider, I've heard that one in four
- 21:02people has a genetic mutation and they cannot convert T4 to T3.
- 21:08So do you think that I might be one of those one in five?
- 21:12Do you think maybe we need to try a T3 for me? Would that help?
- 21:17And hopefully your doctor or your provider is going to say, you know,
- 21:21no, I hadn't considered that. That's a great idea. Let's do that.
- 21:24And if they don't give you a positive response, then maybe it's time to look
- 21:28for another provider, one who will work with you because we want you to always
- 21:34be improving, to get the help that you need, to have the resources that you need.
- 21:39I firmly believe that your provider should be fighting for you just as hard
- 21:43as you are fighting for yourself.
- 21:45Of course, you are the CEO of your own health.
- 21:48You make the ultimate decision, but you want a really good team on your board
- 21:52of advisors and your doctor is on your team.
- 21:54So hopefully you have a really good one and you can get what you need so that
- 21:59your body can convert T4 to T3.
- 22:02Now, as far as all of the minerals and everything, I think I've talked about
- 22:08it before. what I choose to do is I take a multi-nutrient. And I know I'm already at 22 minutes.
- 22:14I try to stop at 20, but I want to tell you about this.
- 22:16There are so many different things in your body that all need different resources.
- 22:22They need different nutrients. They need vitamins and minerals and they need
- 22:25them in different levels.
- 22:27And if you supplement with one, like then you're going to have a problem somewhere
- 22:31else because they all have to be in balance.
- 22:33So what I do is I take a multi-nutrient and
- 22:36it's time wise that's not the name of the
- 22:38product but it's created with time wise technology so
- 22:42that I take it twice a day because in a multivitamin most multivitamins there
- 22:47are things that counteract each other so you'll have one thing that like inactivates
- 22:51another ingredient well the multi-nutrient that I take those are divided out
- 22:56so in the morning I take the things that are going to be you know most beneficial
- 23:00for my energy throughout the day.
- 23:01And then in the evening, I take the one that has a little bit more mineral content
- 23:05and nothing interacts and cancels out the other things.
- 23:10I do feel like in the last five to 10 years, there are more and more multi-nutrients
- 23:16and vitamins coming on the market that look at the balance of everything,
- 23:20the synergy, how everything works together.
- 23:23So I feel like there are more options now than there were 20 years ago when
- 23:27I first had to start looking looking for a really good vitamin.
- 23:30At the end, we didn't, I don't even think we knew about adaptogens.
- 23:33Hopefully the multi-nutrient that you choose does have adaptogens.
- 23:38Adaptogens is just a fancy way of saying nutrients that support like your stress response.
- 23:44They help you adapt. They help your body adapt.
- 23:47So the multi-nutrient that I take does have adaptogens.
- 23:51You can find a lot of them on the market now.
- 23:54And when you're looking, I mean, you could just take my word for it and head
- 23:57down to the show notes. The one that I use is from LifeVantage.com.
- 24:00They're the same company that makes ProTandem, the NRF2 that I was talking about.
- 24:04And one nice thing about doing it that way is that the company expects that
- 24:10you're going to use multiple products and they make sure that all of the products
- 24:14are designed to go with all of the products.
- 24:17So I know that I'm not going to, you know, get too much of something or I'm
- 24:21not going to like break the synergy.
- 24:23So that is why I use a lot of products from LaVantage.
- 24:27Number one, they're the best on the market like they're the only place
- 24:30that you're going to get that nrf2 activator so i
- 24:33love that i can just you know add to my order everything comes on
- 24:35subscription i don't have to worry about it i get the nrf2 activator i get the
- 24:40nrf1 which helps my mitochondria that's the energy production of your cell and
- 24:44i've talked about that before i get those multi-nutrients and it is the same
- 24:48company that i talked about last episode where my husband got the fat burn which he is taking.
- 24:54And like I said, in the last episode, it was a 16 week study.
- 24:57So we're not 16 weeks into it. I can't tell you how his results are.
- 25:01I can tell you that he hasn't had any, like he doesn't feel weird or anything.
- 25:04I took one and I felt a little jittery. I'm super, super, super caffeine sensitive
- 25:09and it does have some caffeine in it.
- 25:11So I didn't need it. I just wanted to know like, what does it do for me?
- 25:15So I'm not going to be taking it again, but it is super nice to have one company
- 25:19where you can just log on, change your subscription, add things to it,
- 25:22subtract things to it, and you know that you're getting a really good foundation of health.
- 25:27And that is one reason I love LifeVantage and that I will continue to talk about
- 25:31their products because number one, they're amazing.
- 25:34The NRF2 activator is different than anything else.
- 25:38And I firmly believe that everybody should be on it because we all need less
- 25:42pollution in ourselves. cells. We need to focus on our cells.
- 25:45And a multi-nutrient, if you don't already take something that is giving your
- 25:50body the good variety that it needs of vitamins, minerals, adaptogens,
- 25:55everything, then take a look at this one.
- 25:57So head down to the show notes, click on the link, and you can just explore the store.
- 26:01Like I said, I take the NRF2, NRF1, the TimeWise, I think it's called Rise AM
- 26:08and Reset PM, the Brain Drink, the Axio, it helps my brain work,
- 26:12which I absolutely need sometimes.
- 26:14And then my husband is taking the fat burn. You can explore the store.
- 26:18There's a lot of things in there that I absolutely love.
- 26:21This has gone really long. Thank you for sticking with me. I hope that this
- 26:25has been helpful in like helping you understand why your body might not be converting T4 to T3.
- 26:32And hopefully now you have some extra questions that you can ask your doctor
- 26:36or your provider and some extra things that you can do in order to help your
- 26:40your body do what your body is supposed to do.
