- 0:01Speaker 2: It's not just talking about the food that you put
- 0:02Speaker 2: in your body, but the music that you listen to,
- 0:04Speaker 2: the books as you read, but more importantly, the words
- 0:06Speaker 2: that you say to yourself, because you feed yourself and
- 0:09Speaker 2: so if you feed yourself negative thoughts, then negative is
- 0:13Speaker 2: what ends up growing and manifesting.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Hey, everybody, Emily A body here.

- 1:06Speaker 4: my conversation with Rebecca Price. She is a yoga and
- 1:09Speaker 4: meditation coach, a Nike trainer, and honestly a ray of light.
- 1:17Speaker 4: We met a couple months back out in Los Angeles
- 1:19Speaker 4: as a part of Nike's fifty for Her event, and
- 1:23Speaker 4: I was so excited to be able to sit down
- 1:25Speaker 4: with her recently here in New York when she was
- 1:28Speaker 4: out visiting. For today's episode. We chat all about Rebecca's
- 1:34Speaker 4: own wellness journey, how she got into both practicing and
- 1:39Speaker 4: teaching both modalities, and the impact that it's had on
- 1:44Speaker 4: her life. She also opens up about what it was
- 1:47Speaker 4: like for her to navigate postpartum depression as well as
- 1:52Speaker 4: a difficult health diagnosis that completely reshaped her outlook on
- 1:57Speaker 4: life and her practice.
- 2:00Speaker 3: We also have a really.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Beautiful discussion on how to feel more at home in
- 2:05Speaker 4: your body, having grace with yourself, having compassion with yourself,
- 2:10Speaker 4: and Rebecca offers up some really useful tips on kind
- 2:15Speaker 4: of how to get to that place for those that
- 2:17Speaker 4: struggle with negative self talk, and let's be real, that's
- 2:21Speaker 4: something that we all.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Struggle with from time to time.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Again, love this conbo, Rebecca, like I said, is a
- 2:30Speaker 4: light and I know you're gonna love it too. Make
- 2:33Speaker 4: sure you're following along with the show over on social
- 2:37Speaker 4: It's over at Hurdle Podcast.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I am over.
- 2:39Speaker 4: At Emily a Body And with that, let's get to Hurdling.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Today.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I am sitting down with Rebecca Price. She is a
- 3:04Speaker 4: Nike trainer, a meditation and yoga expert.
- 3:07Speaker 3: How are you doing today?
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. And how about yourself?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Oh my god, your voice is so soothing.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I'm totally going to get messages after this and people
- 3:16Speaker 4: are gonna be like, can you guys just talk to
- 3:18Speaker 4: us all day?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yes? Are you used to that compliment?
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah? Actually I'm used to it. Especially when I do
- 3:25Speaker 2: my meditations. I get a lot of people who are like,
- 3:28Speaker 2: I love the sound of your voice. And there's this
- 3:30Speaker 2: one woman, her name is Susan. I used to do
- 3:33Speaker 2: these meditations at the beginning of the pandemic just to
- 3:37Speaker 2: help people like ease, and she's like, I heard you.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I was in my kitchen and I stopped what I
- 3:42Speaker 2: was doing and I sat on my floor and she like,
- 3:45Speaker 2: She's like, I looked you up on Facebook. I looked
- 3:47Speaker 2: you up on Instagram, Like she started following me. She's
- 3:49Speaker 2: like the voice for her was what did it and
- 3:52Speaker 2: made her feel like at peace and calm. So I
- 3:54Speaker 2: get it a lot. My kids don't like it because
- 3:56Speaker 2: they're like, you're trying to put us asleep, right, But.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I get that a lot. We love Susan.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, well you are visiting town, and we
- 4:06Speaker 4: met back in Los Angeles when Nike did the fifty
- 4:10Speaker 4: for her, the celebration of the fiftieth year of the company.
- 4:13Speaker 4: And it's just so great for us to be able
- 4:15Speaker 4: to connect here. And I had the opportunity to sit
- 4:18Speaker 4: down and listen to you speak and do a meditation
- 4:21Speaker 4: with you, and was so enamored not just by your voice,
- 4:25Speaker 4: but by your demeanor and your presence. So I'd love
- 4:29Speaker 4: if you could just share a little bit of that
- 4:31Speaker 4: story with the Hurdlers and talk to us about how
- 4:34Speaker 4: you got into this work.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The Colesnalst version of this story is about twenty two
- 4:40Speaker 2: years ago. I was pregnant with my first child. I
- 4:45Speaker 2: was experiencing a lot of anxiety around like this whole
- 4:48Speaker 2: entire space of entering.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Motherhood and what did that mean.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And I was also like in university and like I
- 4:53Speaker 2: had moved to a new city to like an education,
- 4:55Speaker 2: not get pregnant. So there's like a whole bunch of
- 4:58Speaker 2: variables that were at place. And I thought about practicing
- 5:03Speaker 2: and doing yoga, like prenatal yoga as a way to
- 5:06Speaker 2: kind of like help me cope. I had like this
- 5:08Speaker 2: whole setup in my head where I was gonna play
- 5:10Speaker 2: like Bob Marley doing like labor and delivery and have
- 5:13Speaker 2: incense burning.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It was like this whole vibe.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I had a lot of complications and it didn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: end up that way. And I also found out while
- 5:24Speaker 2: giving birth to him that I had fibrants because I hamorrhaged,
- 5:28Speaker 2: and so it was a very precarious time for me
- 5:31Speaker 2: and being in that state. And what I ended up
- 5:34Speaker 2: anchoring into a lot was like meditation, like the visual pieces,
- 5:38Speaker 2: the mantras, just to be able to kind of like
- 5:41Speaker 2: help me get over onto the other side. And then
- 5:44Speaker 2: I also had postpartum depression, So meditation and yoga as
- 5:48Speaker 2: a practice learning how to anchor back into my body
- 5:51Speaker 2: was something that I started to do and then actually
- 5:54Speaker 2: enjoyed it, and so I decided to kind of like
- 5:59Speaker 2: go more further and deeper into that as a practice.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And what ended up happening was like would go to
- 6:05Speaker 2: yoga studio spaces and I would be like the only
- 6:08Speaker 2: women of color a lot of the time in those spaces.
- 6:12Speaker 2: And my background is in community development, so I would
- 6:15Speaker 2: work in a lot of marginalized communities in Toronto and
- 6:19Speaker 2: specifically and in Jamaica too as well. I just noticed
- 6:22Speaker 2: that in community development we talk a lot about the
- 6:24Speaker 2: social determinants of health, like what makes people feel like
- 6:26Speaker 2: they belong, what makes people feel like all those things
- 6:29Speaker 2: kind of add to one's ability to be well, and
- 6:32Speaker 2: I didn't necessarily see that in the spaces that I
- 6:34Speaker 2: was practicing in, and so then I was just like, Okay,
- 6:38Speaker 2: I was working in a community. I had a bunch
- 6:41Speaker 2: of kids. I started teaching them kids yoga just to
- 6:44Speaker 2: be able to get more community partners to come in.
- 6:46Speaker 2: So I was like, oh, we have a yoga program.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I mean, I was the one teaching it. And the
- 6:49Speaker 2: parents started coming to me and being like, oh, like,
- 6:52Speaker 2: what are you doing with my child? And I was like,
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'm teaching them yoga?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Is that okay?
- 6:55Speaker 2: And then they were like whatever you're doing, can you
- 6:57Speaker 2: teach me that? And I was like, oh, okay, so
- 7:00Speaker 2: this is a thing. And so I started offering like
- 7:02Speaker 2: free programming for the parents because the parents were noticing
- 7:06Speaker 2: that their kids were not getting in trouble as much.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I taught them like count to ten before you react,
- 7:10Speaker 2: like all these kinds of things, and so it kind
- 7:13Speaker 2: of morphed into like this free little community program that
- 7:16Speaker 2: I was offering to like someone reaching out to me
- 7:19Speaker 2: and offering me a scholarship for teacher training, and I
- 7:22Speaker 2: was like, oh, so this is like a real thing now.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And I went and got certified, and I specifically came
- 7:28Speaker 2: back to the same community that I started in and
- 7:30Speaker 2: just offered like free yoga, and it kind of like
- 7:32Speaker 2: blossomed into like creating the community spaces where like people
- 7:36Speaker 2: of color could.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Come and practice.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And then fast forward ten years later, I just happened
- 7:42Speaker 2: to be you know, everybody always asked me about my
- 7:45Speaker 2: journey to Nike and all that kind of stuff, Like
- 7:48Speaker 2: I just feel like, you know, when the universe places
- 7:52Speaker 2: things on your path and it's an alignment for you,
- 7:54Speaker 2: it just naturally happens. And you know, I feel that
- 7:59Speaker 2: like me finding yoga at that time as a practice
- 8:01Speaker 2: in meditation at that time is a practice fell in
- 8:04Speaker 2: alignment with what I was in need of. And then
- 8:06Speaker 2: me creating initiatives and programs and offerings for people to
- 8:09Speaker 2: be able to pour into themselves and to take care
- 8:12Speaker 2: of themselves, and to kind of also normalize this ideal
- 8:15Speaker 2: of like like creating communities where people felt like they belonged,
- 8:20Speaker 2: especially in places where like you're othered a lot, and
- 8:24Speaker 2: what does that mean to be able to just kind
- 8:26Speaker 2: of like be in a space where you could just
- 8:28Speaker 2: like I used to tell people like even if you
- 8:30Speaker 2: just did shavasna and you did nothing else, like that's
- 8:33Speaker 2: your practice, right, And so like my journey to Nike
- 8:36Speaker 2: was just like someone came and they took one of
- 8:39Speaker 2: my classes and they really liked it. And then you know,
- 8:42Speaker 2: next thing you know, I'm doing like a shootout in
- 8:44Speaker 2: LA and talking to some really cool people, and I
- 8:50Speaker 2: ended up having an opportunity to kind of like audition
- 8:53Speaker 2: or like do some train or audition. Unfortunately, at that time,
- 8:57Speaker 2: I had fibroids and I was like a tumor, like
- 9:02Speaker 2: a tumor that turned into cancer on my uterus. So
- 9:05Speaker 2: I didn't get a chance to kind of like fulfill
- 9:09Speaker 2: that piece. But then Nike came back to me. They're like, hey,
- 9:11Speaker 2: we really like what you're about, we really like what
- 9:13Speaker 2: you stand for. When you're ready, let us know. So
- 9:16Speaker 2: I just thought with the personal stuff that I needed
- 9:18Speaker 2: to deal with, and then fast forward, now I'm like
- 9:21Speaker 2: teaching Niki, teaching yoga on the app, still in community
- 9:26Speaker 2: offering programs and classes and doing more meditations because I
- 9:31Speaker 2: feel like that's what a lot of people need and
- 9:33Speaker 2: it's an easy, accessible way for you to anchor back
- 9:36Speaker 2: into your body. And just also like you know, meditation,
- 9:38Speaker 2: you can do affirmations like all those kinds of things.
- 9:41Speaker 2: But yeah, that's like the cools note version of like
- 9:44Speaker 2: how I kind of like ended up here.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Sitting with me in the studio. Firstly, thanks for sharing that.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Secondly, whenever someone openly shares that they've gone through about
- 9:57Speaker 4: of depression, I always like to ask what that looked
- 10:03Speaker 4: like for you, because hearing about it in someone's words,
- 10:09Speaker 4: someone's own words, can be really helpful for anyone who
- 10:12Speaker 4: may be experiencing something and they're wondering if they may
- 10:15Speaker 4: be navigating depression or symptoms like that.
- 10:18Speaker 3: So would you mind sharing a little bit about your experience?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Sure for me.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So some people would say I'm a type of personality
- 10:28Speaker 2: I bake to differ, I'm fluid, but I was, really,
- 10:31Speaker 2: like I said, like, I had this ideal in my
- 10:33Speaker 2: head of what it was supposed to be like to
- 10:36Speaker 2: become a mother, right, And I had this idea of
- 10:40Speaker 2: like what it was supposed to feel like, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: I read every book, I watched every show like you
- 10:45Speaker 2: name it. I did it because I was like determined
- 10:47Speaker 2: to be like prepared and the best. Unfortunately, when I
- 10:51Speaker 2: had my son, like I just didn't feel that connection
- 10:54Speaker 2: and I felt really sad all the time. I felt
- 10:57Speaker 2: really alone. I felt really isolated. And then there's also
- 11:01Speaker 2: like a cultural stigma, like my background is Jamaican, a Dominican,
- 11:05Speaker 2: and like culturally speaking, like depression wasn't something that you
- 11:08Speaker 2: openly talk about.
- 11:10Speaker 1: It was something that like like we just don't.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Get that, like you know, you gotta be strong, and like,
- 11:16Speaker 2: you know, I grew up with too many white people
- 11:18Speaker 2: that so people would always say to me, and I'm like, no,
- 11:20Speaker 2: there's something wrong. There's like a disconnect. Like I was
- 11:24Speaker 2: having issues like even just trying to like feel connected
- 11:28Speaker 2: to holding my son, I would break down in tears
- 11:31Speaker 2: all the time, and I just wasn't. I didn't feel
- 11:34Speaker 2: like myself, if that makes sense, Like I just didn't
- 11:36Speaker 2: like anybody who knows me knows that I'm like like
- 11:39Speaker 2: always happy and smiling and just like you've got this,
- 11:42Speaker 2: we can do this. And I was just like I'm
- 11:43Speaker 2: not feeling it today. I didn't want to like get
- 11:46Speaker 2: up and take a shower, I didn't feel like eating.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It was just like I just felt really disconnected. And
- 11:52Speaker 2: my mother, who happened to be a nurse, I went
- 11:54Speaker 2: to her and I was like, hey, like I really
- 11:56Speaker 2: feel like something's up, and she was just like, well,
- 12:00Speaker 2: maybe you're depressed. And I'm like, can I get depressed?
- 12:04Speaker 2: I've never heard that word before. She's like, well, that happens.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And so I actually went to a doctor and they
- 12:12Speaker 2: diagnosed me with postpartum depression. I ended up going to
- 12:15Speaker 2: therapy and I used to do like group therapy sessions,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and then I slowly started to feel myself coming back.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And I can always recognize, like that's not to say
- 12:25Speaker 2: like I've never been depressed ever since, because I have,
- 12:28Speaker 2: but I also can tell like when I'm feeling myself
- 12:31Speaker 2: falling down that rabbit hole, like feeling myself be a
- 12:33Speaker 2: little bit disconnected, feeling myself kind of like sinking into
- 12:36Speaker 2: this dark space where I just don't feel or have
- 12:41Speaker 2: the energy to like show up and be myself. And
- 12:45Speaker 2: that is something that like I've I've talked openly about
- 12:48Speaker 2: just because especially like culturally there's a lot of stigma.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I feel like now the conversations around mental health
- 12:54Speaker 2: and anxiety and all those things have become a lot
- 12:56Speaker 2: more normalized, but back then it was a lot and
- 13:01Speaker 2: I faced a lot of stigma community wise in terms
- 13:04Speaker 2: of just being open about like, hey, I'm having this issue,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I'm struggling with that, and like it's not a bad thing,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but people made me feel like it was a bad
- 13:12Speaker 2: So it was like this place of like feeling alone
- 13:14Speaker 2: and isolated and not being able to talk about it
- 13:16Speaker 2: because no one understood it. But I knew that something
- 13:19Speaker 2: was wrong, Like I just wasn't myself, Like I just
- 13:22Speaker 2: was like not and it has nothing to do with
- 13:24Speaker 2: like gaslighting myself through life and being like I'm happy,
- 13:27Speaker 2: go lucky all the time. It just felt like dark
- 13:30Speaker 2: and heavy, and I was never used to feeling dark
- 13:34Speaker 2: and heavy in my body and how that felt in
- 13:36Speaker 2: my body, and like again just like not having the
- 13:39Speaker 2: energy or just not feeling connected enough to do anything.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Just it was just like a really dark time for me,
- 13:47Speaker 2: which I'm thankful for because that has helped me even
- 13:51Speaker 2: as a teacher and facilitating like conversations and even practices
- 13:56Speaker 2: with people to be able to like legitimize like no,
- 13:59Speaker 2: it's okay, You're allowed to feel that way.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, yeah, and you mentioned occasionally feeling that
- 14:05Speaker 4: way even still, what do you do when that creeps in?
- 14:10Speaker 3: Now?
- 14:12Speaker 2: So I really am a big firm believer of somatic practices.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So somatic just like creating movement. I always will say,
- 14:19Speaker 2: like the energy is getting stuck in my body, can
- 14:21Speaker 2: feel it. So now what I do is I do
- 14:24Speaker 2: simple things. I go for walks. Walks really help just
- 14:29Speaker 2: getting me moving in my mind moving. Obviously, I practice yoga,
- 14:36Speaker 2: and I always like to tell people like some of
- 14:38Speaker 2: my best practices or happen when I'm on the mat
- 14:42Speaker 2: and I'm just like in my element of just like hey,
- 14:45Speaker 2: like even if it's just breathing through stuff, breathwork has
- 14:49Speaker 2: been something that's been able to help me anchor through
- 14:52Speaker 2: certain things, especially like during the pandemic, Like I think
- 14:55Speaker 2: everybody's anxiety was on ten, So breathwork was something I
- 14:58Speaker 2: was just like, oh, I need to breathe, and people
- 15:00Speaker 2: could hear me openly sign and like what's up with you?
- 15:03Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'm just breathing through this thing called
- 15:05Speaker 2: life right now.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Because you know.
- 15:07Speaker 2: So, breath work has been something that I've anchored into
- 15:09Speaker 2: a lot. And then I just do simple things like
- 15:12Speaker 2: putting on some music, dancing. I try to think of
- 15:17Speaker 2: like really simple and accessible ways to be able to
- 15:20Speaker 2: kind of like move through that. And then if worst case,
- 15:24Speaker 2: I feel like I'm in a really dark space, I
- 15:26Speaker 2: have a therapist. I'm all for therapy, so I have
- 15:31Speaker 2: a therapist. And then also therapy also looks like just
- 15:33Speaker 2: calling up your girls and just being like, Hey, I'm
- 15:35Speaker 2: just in a space right now. Can you come over?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Can I come over? Can we go for a walk
- 15:40Speaker 2: or do something? So, yeah, those are like the key
- 15:42Speaker 2: ones that I usually anchor into.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Yeah, And that vulnerability is commendable and also difficult, Like
- 15:48Speaker 4: it can be both, right, Like, vulnerability can be important
- 15:51Speaker 4: and hard.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 3: So for you.
- 15:53Speaker 4: To start by recognizing how you feel and then making
- 15:59Speaker 4: the conscious choice to do something about that, that's admirable
- 16:03Speaker 4: and that is a great place to start.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I really also appreciated you sharing the hurdle that you
- 16:11Speaker 4: had to overcome when it came to your health and
- 16:13Speaker 4: also at the crossroads of this big opportunity for you
- 16:17Speaker 4: with Nike. Can you talk a little bit about how
- 16:20Speaker 4: that played out for you.
- 16:23Speaker 2: The funny thing was, I did I did my tape.
- 16:27Speaker 2: So when I found out that I actually was sick,
- 16:31Speaker 2: and you know, it wasn't something I openly talked to
- 16:34Speaker 2: everybody about. Was like afterwards when I was all said
- 16:36Speaker 2: and done. But like, when I found out that I
- 16:39Speaker 2: was sick, it was just I found out two days
- 16:42Speaker 2: before I flew out to La to do my yoga
- 16:44Speaker 2: when Nike was rebranding their yoga and I flew up.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I found out two days before, and I was just like, man,
- 16:51Speaker 2: And then I was just like And they found the
- 16:53Speaker 2: tumor was like ten centimeters large on the back of
- 16:57Speaker 2: my uterus, And so part of me felt vindicated because
- 17:00Speaker 2: for a whole year I had been struggling with this
- 17:03Speaker 2: pain and I'd go to the hospital and they'd be like,
- 17:05Speaker 2: it's all in your head. I'm like, this is not
- 17:07Speaker 2: all in my head. I feel like my periods are
- 17:09Speaker 2: very abnormal. This is like not normal for me. So like,
- 17:14Speaker 2: y'all need to get it together. And you know, black
- 17:18Speaker 2: women have a lot of issues when it comes to
- 17:20Speaker 2: navigating the health industrial complex system. So you know, I'm
- 17:25Speaker 2: privileged enough to be able to say that I'm in
- 17:27Speaker 2: a position to be able to advocate for myself. And
- 17:31Speaker 2: so I kept on pushing and pushing, and eventually I
- 17:33Speaker 2: found out what it was because I were like, it's
- 17:34Speaker 2: all in your head. I'm like, it's not like I
- 17:36Speaker 2: don't think I want to spend a Friday night sitting
- 17:38Speaker 2: in an emergency for three hours.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Like, I got way better things to do with my time.
- 17:42Speaker 2: So I found out a couple of days before I
- 17:43Speaker 2: went to LA, and a part of me was just like,
- 17:46Speaker 2: do I crawl in a corner and like curl up
- 17:48Speaker 2: into a ball, which you know would have set me
- 17:51Speaker 2: into a really bad depression, or do I take this
- 17:53Speaker 2: really cool opportunity and go to LA and make the
- 17:55Speaker 2: best of it because I just don't know what my
- 17:57Speaker 2: next steps are going to be, Like when I come back,
- 17:59Speaker 2: I'm going to have a whole bunch of decisions to
- 18:00Speaker 2: make and stuff like that. I'm like, it's a free
- 18:03Speaker 2: trip to LA and I'd never been. And so I
- 18:07Speaker 2: like went to LA and met some, like I said,
- 18:10Speaker 2: amazing people on set who were really super supportive. And
- 18:14Speaker 2: then when I came back, they had offered me to
- 18:17Speaker 2: like actually like audition to be a teacher, a trainer,
- 18:22Speaker 2: and I was like, okay, cool. I thought at that time, like,
- 18:25Speaker 2: you know, because they said, like I wouldn't find out
- 18:28Speaker 2: until January. So I was like, I've got time, Like
- 18:31Speaker 2: I have time to like eventually hopefully get the surgery.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Da da da da, Fast forward, COVID happened. They're like you.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I had opted to have a hysterectomy just because I
- 18:43Speaker 2: felt it was the best decision for me. I struggled
- 18:47Speaker 2: to make that decision because a lot of you know,
- 18:52Speaker 2: we store a lot of energy in our womb space.
- 18:54Speaker 2: The idem concept of how we show up as women
- 18:57Speaker 2: sometimes is intrinstically tied to that space to well, and
- 19:01Speaker 2: so you know, that was something that I struggled with.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But I felt that was the best decision given the
- 19:07Speaker 2: circumstances and the options that I had in front of
- 19:10Speaker 2: me with regards to like the possibility of cancer coming back.
- 19:15Speaker 2: My mother had breast cancer and it was mestistic and
- 19:18Speaker 2: eventually she passed away of like brain cancer. So I
- 19:21Speaker 2: had that trauma of living through taking care of my
- 19:23Speaker 2: mother and seeing the things that she went through. And
- 19:26Speaker 2: I was very adamant from a very young age that
- 19:28Speaker 2: if I ever got sick like that.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I was just going to be like, chamawhaw, do.
- 19:31Speaker 2: What you got to do, take it out, like, because
- 19:33Speaker 2: I've seen what that does. Especially being a young child
- 19:37Speaker 2: and caregiver to your adult parent is very hard. And
- 19:41Speaker 2: so I had i'd made that decision, and so I
- 19:44Speaker 2: uh waited and waited and waited, and then my doctor
- 19:49Speaker 2: called me one day. She's like, there's like this window
- 19:51Speaker 2: we got like two days. She's like, you can go in,
- 19:53Speaker 2: you can have the surgery and be out. You're like
- 19:55Speaker 2: really healthy, it's going to be all good, like all
- 19:58Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. And I went and did it.
- 20:02Speaker 2: And the same day I had my surgery is the
- 20:04Speaker 2: same day Nike called me.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Was it in January?
- 20:08Speaker 1: No?
- 20:09Speaker 2: It was, So I had to wait. So I went
- 20:11Speaker 2: to LA in November. I ended up getting everything confirmed
- 20:15Speaker 2: in February. COVID happens like two weeks later. After all that,
- 20:19Speaker 2: everything shut down. I didn't get my surgery until September
- 20:23Speaker 2: twenty eighth.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Wow.
- 20:24Speaker 2: So I had to like sit through all that and
- 20:27Speaker 2: still try to like navigate and show up and be
- 20:29Speaker 2: all the different people that I am for many different people.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And so when she called me, she's like this is
- 20:34Speaker 2: I think they're going to come out of a lockdown.
- 20:36Speaker 2: We have this little bit of a window. I was like,
- 20:38Speaker 2: I'll take it, and like I had my surgery on
- 20:40Speaker 2: the twenty eighth, Nike he called me like that day.
- 20:44Speaker 1: They were like, are you able to like we want
- 20:49Speaker 1: to like do some stuff.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And I was like like, so what happened was like
- 20:53Speaker 2: you know what I mean because in my head they
- 20:54Speaker 2: said January. Yeah, right, So I saw I had all
- 20:57Speaker 2: this time to be like I could go have the
- 21:00Speaker 2: surgery get better. And I was really extra with it too,
- 21:04Speaker 2: because prior to my surgery, like I did like you know,
- 21:07Speaker 2: we're content creators, so like all these photo shoots, so
- 21:10Speaker 2: like I would be like in my head, I was like,
- 21:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna post for my bed and yeah, no one
- 21:14Speaker 2: would know that I was sick like that in my head,
- 21:15Speaker 2: I was like it was something that I kept really private.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I just didn't also know how to talk about it, yeah,
- 21:23Speaker 2: because it was a very emotional time for me, and
- 21:26Speaker 2: so I felt like okay, like if I came up
- 21:29Speaker 2: with this really cool plan and then like he's like, oh,
- 21:32Speaker 2: like we want you to come in and I was like, oh, shoot,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I can't and they're like why and I was like oh,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and I was very honest with them. They're like, oh
- 21:39Speaker 2: my gosh, like take care of yourself and when you're ready,
- 21:42Speaker 2: like let us know. And then I had my surgery,
- 21:46Speaker 2: and unfortunately I had complications. My stitches kept on popping,
- 21:53Speaker 2: and so I had to keep going back into the
- 21:56Speaker 2: hospital and extending my stays longer because I would I
- 21:59Speaker 2: was literally Russian three times for emergency surgery because I
- 22:04Speaker 2: was like internally bleeding. It was just really not a
- 22:07Speaker 2: fun time. And I'm very happy and blessed to be
- 22:10Speaker 2: here because I also know what it's like to kind
- 22:13Speaker 2: of like be on the other side where you're like
- 22:15Speaker 2: I might not make it. I got a phone call
- 22:18Speaker 2: from Nike. They were like, Okay, we know that you
- 22:20Speaker 2: can't teach yoga right now, but can you do a meditation.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I was like, oh, on zoom, of course, that's like
- 22:26Speaker 2: the easiest thing because it didn't require me to do anything.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Because I was literally put on bed rest for like
- 22:30Speaker 2: six months. I wasn't allowed to do anything, no exercise
- 22:33Speaker 2: because they just didn't know why my stitches were popping.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And I think I was in a place where again
- 22:39Speaker 2: my mental health was like I was afraid to cough,
- 22:42Speaker 2: I was afraid to sneeze, I was afraid to go
- 22:43Speaker 2: to watch And I was like to my friends, don't
- 22:44Speaker 2: make me laugh because I just don't know why my
- 22:46Speaker 2: stitches kept on popping.
- 22:48Speaker 1: They just did.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And you know, the doctor was just like, hey, this
- 22:51Speaker 2: is the last time we did all we could do
- 22:53Speaker 2: after this, like you know, and I was like, I understand.
- 22:56Speaker 2: They offered me an opportunity to do a meditation. I
- 22:59Speaker 2: was like, okay, I could do that. That's not hard
- 23:01Speaker 2: and just required me to sit. And so I did
- 23:03Speaker 2: a meditation and then I get kept on called back
- 23:07Speaker 2: to do more meditations. Then it kind of just unfolded
- 23:09Speaker 2: from there and then they're like, Okay, when you feel
- 23:12Speaker 2: like you're ready in a position to come back and teach,
- 23:15Speaker 2: we'd like to invite you back to like doing some training.
- 23:18Speaker 2: And I was like okay, cool. And then I did
- 23:21Speaker 2: that last year. Last year I filmed for the app.
- 23:25Speaker 2: So it was like a whole like full circle, like
- 23:27Speaker 2: a year and but almost two years later since the
- 23:31Speaker 2: initial interaction with them to the moment where I was like, Okay,
- 23:34Speaker 2: I feel like I'm healthy enough. I feel like I
- 23:37Speaker 2: feel secure enough in my body and to show up
- 23:42Speaker 2: as what my body was at that time. You know,
- 23:46Speaker 2: you know, I'm not like a size too, and like,
- 23:49Speaker 2: you know, I think that you were in wellness. You know,
- 23:52Speaker 2: there's like this idea of what wellness is supposed to
- 23:54Speaker 2: look like and what a yoga instructor is supposed to
- 23:57Speaker 2: look like. So like, you know, I also had to
- 23:59Speaker 2: kind of like that hurdle of like I don't look
- 24:02Speaker 2: like your typical yogi person and I have all this
- 24:06Speaker 2: like luggage or bags, as Eric Aboudoo would say, like
- 24:09Speaker 2: with me, like I'm carrying all this luggage like you
- 24:11Speaker 2: know what I mean, and showing up on set and like,
- 24:14Speaker 2: you know, what does this mean for me? But then
- 24:16Speaker 2: like how important is it for me to like hold
- 24:17Speaker 2: space for myself? And then you know, my whole entire
- 24:20Speaker 2: ethos of what I was all about was like seeing
- 24:23Speaker 2: yourself being reflected. And you know, when one of the
- 24:28Speaker 2: directors on set, Greg he was just like, hey, my
- 24:30Speaker 2: mom's gonna do yoga now because of you, because she's
- 24:32Speaker 2: like she can see yourself. And I was like, okay,
- 24:34Speaker 2: like you know, it's not a bad space to be in.
- 24:36Speaker 2: At the end of the day and then now I'm
- 24:39Speaker 2: here teaching classes for them, and and I'm really thankful
- 24:44Speaker 2: and blessed for that opportunity.
- 24:45Speaker 3: How are you.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Feeling now, I'm great.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I am also like so blessed to be able to
- 24:52Speaker 2: you know, make the connections and have the networks that
- 24:55Speaker 2: we have. So I just had some amazing once I
- 24:58Speaker 2: was transparent to like my friend's circle, well, to be
- 25:01Speaker 2: able to be like this is what I've gone through,
- 25:02Speaker 2: Like I've had like you know, my friend Navice, she
- 25:05Speaker 2: does Ariya Veda. She was just like sending me stuff.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And I have like some really great friends who just
- 25:11Speaker 2: showed up for me and helped me through this process.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And I had a really good pelvic floor specialist, which
- 25:16Speaker 2: thank god, because I just had to relearn my body right.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And then also like there's this empty space too, right,
- 25:23Speaker 2: So what does that mean to like hold space for
- 25:27Speaker 2: myself and move my body in this new transitionary period?
- 25:31Speaker 2: And you know that comes with like you know, I
- 25:33Speaker 2: had a hysterectomy. That means I'm like pre metopausal, like
- 25:36Speaker 2: comes with a whole bunch of things that I didn't
- 25:38Speaker 2: necessarily think that I was going to experience. But I
- 25:41Speaker 2: am and I'm navigating through them. I appreciate when people
- 25:45Speaker 2: say what hot flashes feel like I totally.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Know that now.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Like I'm just in a space of relearning to love
- 25:51Speaker 2: my body, yeah, and relearning to appreciate my body just
- 25:54Speaker 2: like sit back and be like, sometimes we don't realize
- 25:57Speaker 2: just the amount of work like our body goes through
- 26:00Speaker 2: and how much they support, like our body supports us.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Like I feel like sometimes we take that for granted,
- 26:05Speaker 2: and like maybe it took me being humbled and like,
- 26:08Speaker 2: you know, like having these moments where I was like,
- 26:10Speaker 2: oh my god, I literally might not make it out
- 26:12Speaker 2: of this like operating room, right, like literally like seeing
- 26:15Speaker 2: your life like you know when you see the movies
- 26:17Speaker 2: and like they see the light, your life flashes before
- 26:19Speaker 2: your eyes. Like it literally felt like that in slow motion, right.
- 26:23Speaker 2: And then so when I came back out of that,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and I'm like, I'm in this position, I have, like,
- 26:27Speaker 2: you know, a new lease on life, Like how am
- 26:30Speaker 2: I going to show up for myself better?
- 26:33Speaker 1: Right?
- 26:34Speaker 2: Because I also believe that part of the reason why
- 26:37Speaker 2: I was sick was because I was probably in a
- 26:40Speaker 2: very unhealthy relationship and I was also not holding space
- 26:45Speaker 2: for myself the ways that I needed to hold space
- 26:48Speaker 2: for myself. And so now like I appreciate this opportunity
- 26:52Speaker 2: to like love on me a lot differently. And I
- 26:55Speaker 2: also appreciate the fact that, like my body has been
- 26:58Speaker 2: through so much, the journey still continues, and I've had
- 27:02Speaker 2: to learn to have like a different conversation with my body.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I went from like having like a really great, you know,
- 27:08Speaker 2: Vinanza practice to like I can't do certain things right
- 27:13Speaker 2: or it's taking me longer. Right, Like in my head,
- 27:16Speaker 2: I was supposed to be down for like eight weeks,
- 27:19Speaker 2: ten weeks tops, because I was healthy and you know,
- 27:23Speaker 2: to be on bed rest and not move your body
- 27:25Speaker 2: for six months, and then I gained a whole bunch
- 27:27Speaker 2: of weight and I had to do this and I
- 27:28Speaker 2: had to like I had to like really like sit
- 27:30Speaker 2: with myself and be like, who and how am I
- 27:33Speaker 2: showing up for myself?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Right?
- 27:35Speaker 2: Who is who is this person you want to show
- 27:37Speaker 2: up for? Are you're showing up for everybody else? And
- 27:38Speaker 2: like then also have the responsibility of being like a mother,
- 27:41Speaker 2: like friend, like I have all these other responsibilities. I
- 27:44Speaker 2: was just like, what kind of things am I teaching?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Especially my children? How do I normalize conversations about like
- 27:52Speaker 2: how do I speak to myself in a way that
- 27:55Speaker 2: is loving and nurturing and nourishing. And I have to
- 27:58Speaker 2: learn how to do that because like my body isn't
- 28:00Speaker 2: the same as it used to be, it never will be,
- 28:02Speaker 2: and I'm okay with that. And I also help space
- 28:05Speaker 2: to grieve for the fact that I don't have a womb,
- 28:07Speaker 2: I'll never be able to have more children and like
- 28:10Speaker 2: all what that means. And I held space for that,
- 28:13Speaker 2: but I also have health space for welcoming in whatever
- 28:17Speaker 2: opportunities me and my body are going to be receiving.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And so it's been a very interesting journey that's been
- 28:26Speaker 2: like really rooted in a lot of self compassion, being
- 28:29Speaker 2: in wellness. We talk about all these things, but now
- 28:31Speaker 2: it like really forced me to like live the walk.
- 28:34Speaker 1: That I talk.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 28:43Speaker 4: about my sponsor at inside Tracker.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Now, when you do what you love, like running.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Racing, enjoying the great outdoors, you want to do it
- 28:54Speaker 4: for life and inside Tracker can help.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Inside Tracker was founded in two.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Thousand and nine by leading scientists in aging, genetics and biometrics.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Using their patented algorithm, Inside Tracker analyzes your body's data
- 29:08Speaker 4: to provide you with a clear picture of what's going
- 29:11Speaker 4: on inside you and then offer you science backed recommendations
- 29:16Speaker 4: for positive diet and lifestyle changes. It's been so helpful
- 29:22Speaker 4: for me. I just did I think this was my
- 29:24Speaker 4: third ultimate panel, and especially at the beginning of a
- 29:29Speaker 4: marathon training cycle, it is so helpful for me to
- 29:33Speaker 4: really home in on the areas where I may be
- 29:37Speaker 4: a little bit deficient. Like many women, I am a
- 29:40Speaker 4: little low in iron. My fare en levels are a
- 29:43Speaker 4: little low, and so with the data from my inside
- 29:46Speaker 4: Tracker test, I now am monitoring this and making smart
- 29:52Speaker 4: changes within my diet so that I can perform my
- 29:56Speaker 4: best and give my body what it really needs. Of course,
- 30:01Speaker 4: inside Tracker has an offer for the Hurdle listeners. For
- 30:05Speaker 4: a limited time, you can get twenty percent off the

- 30:22Speaker 4: the entire inside Tracker store at inside tracker dot com
- 30:27Speaker 4: slash Hurdle Live the Walk that I talk while you're
- 30:37Speaker 4: easily transitioning us into the conversation that I want to
- 30:42Speaker 4: have with you surrounding the idea of embracing our bodies
- 30:46Speaker 4: as our homes, something that does take a fair amount
- 30:51Speaker 4: of that grace and self compassion. I know it's something
- 30:54Speaker 4: that you've spoken about before, both the meditation and on
- 30:57Speaker 4: your social platform. What does it mean to properly treat
- 31:02Speaker 4: your body as your home?
- 31:08Speaker 2: I think it's about learning how to just show up
- 31:11Speaker 2: for yourself, right. I don't necessarily feel that we're taught
- 31:16Speaker 2: the ways in which we could honor ourselves and show
- 31:18Speaker 2: up for ourselves. I think it's very easy for us,
- 31:22Speaker 2: and I think especially as women, we're like socially conditioned
- 31:25Speaker 2: and brought up to be able to show up and
- 31:28Speaker 2: be there for others, but not necessarily taught to show
- 31:33Speaker 2: up and be there for ourselves. So what does that
- 31:35Speaker 2: mean to honor your boundaries? Say no when you really
- 31:38Speaker 2: really want to say like no, not say yes because
- 31:42Speaker 2: you feel like you're obligated to, like creating home, and
- 31:45Speaker 2: just in terms of just appreciating like this vessel that
- 31:48Speaker 2: you have and all the things that it can and
- 31:52Speaker 2: will do for you and just learning just to like
- 31:56Speaker 2: love yourself unconditionally and being in that space of being
- 32:00Speaker 2: being taught because we're taught like to kind of shrink
- 32:02Speaker 2: ourselves a lot, and so like being authentic to who
- 32:05Speaker 2: you are and being okay with being.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Authentic to who you are because a lot of the.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Times we navigate these spaces where people give you expectations
- 32:14Speaker 2: of what they expect you to be like and how
- 32:16Speaker 2: they expect you to show up, but really being like,
- 32:19Speaker 2: but does that honor me? Does that honor the space
- 32:21Speaker 2: within myself? Does that feel good in my heart right?
- 32:25Speaker 2: Or like, does that feel good in the pit of
- 32:27Speaker 2: my stomach? Because you know, intuition is naturally inherently built
- 32:31Speaker 2: into who we are as human beings if we pay
- 32:33Speaker 2: attention to it. So like just really being in that
- 32:36Speaker 2: space of knowing that I'm just going to be true
- 32:39Speaker 2: to myself and being okay with it, not being okay
- 32:43Speaker 2: with everybody else, because that's the part.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I guess.
- 32:46Speaker 2: You could say that I'm a recovering people pleaser, and
- 32:48Speaker 2: I'm okay with that.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I'll wear that.
- 32:50Speaker 2: But I think there's so many variables that made me
- 32:55Speaker 2: into trying to prove my worth all the time. To
- 32:58Speaker 2: someone else without realizing. And the most important person I
- 33:01Speaker 2: needed to try to prove my worth to or remind
- 33:04Speaker 2: myself of my worth was myself.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yeah, I'll never forget. I went to a
- 33:09Speaker 4: workshop in Los Angeles once and one of the questions
- 33:13Speaker 4: that we started off with or prompts, our eyes were closed,
- 33:16Speaker 4: and the facilitator said, think of someone you love. And
- 33:22Speaker 4: at the very end of it, they asked, did anyone
- 33:27Speaker 4: think of themselves? Not a single person I think there
- 33:30Speaker 4: were fifty of us in that room raised our hands
- 33:34Speaker 4: saying that that person that we love is ourselves, And
- 33:37Speaker 4: how are we supposed to go around every day as
- 33:43Speaker 4: the person that talks to ourselves the most in any
- 33:46Speaker 4: given day and not think of ourselves as someone that
- 33:51Speaker 4: we love.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Right, And just like even thinking about the things that
- 33:54Speaker 2: you I always say, like, you know, one of the
- 33:57Speaker 2: things that's helped me is cultivating a practice rooted and
- 34:00Speaker 2: self compassion. So yeah, we have self love, self worth,
- 34:03Speaker 2: but like self compassion, it's like speaking kindness onto yourself
- 34:07Speaker 2: and like how easy is it for you to like
- 34:09Speaker 2: give me grace and be like hey, Rebecca and you
- 34:11Speaker 2: give me a You speak so much kindness and compassion
- 34:14Speaker 2: into myself and to me like somebody you really don't know,
- 34:17Speaker 2: but like, how often does Emily speak kindness and compassion
- 34:20Speaker 2: into herself?
- 34:22Speaker 1: Right?
- 34:22Speaker 2: And it's so interesting that you said that of the
- 34:25Speaker 2: fifty people, nobody thought of themselves. Right, And then it
- 34:29Speaker 2: just goes to kind of like show us that, like,
- 34:32Speaker 2: like part of that is the ways in which we're
- 34:34Speaker 2: socially conditioned to shrink ourselves and alsoly social conditions not
- 34:39Speaker 2: to think about ourselves. Like why is there so much
- 34:41Speaker 2: guilt around the whole entire idea of like putting yourself first?
- 34:45Speaker 1: Right?
- 34:46Speaker 2: You know, like last time I check, we unless you're
- 34:48Speaker 2: a twin, but even that, you're born separately, Like you're
- 34:51Speaker 2: born into this world, into this being who you are, right,
- 34:55Speaker 2: but you spend so much time like being a human
- 34:59Speaker 2: being for someone else instead of being a human being
- 35:02Speaker 2: for yourself, right, And so like really thinking about the
- 35:04Speaker 2: ways in which you can honor that space within, fill
- 35:07Speaker 2: your own cup and love on yourself. And I think,
- 35:10Speaker 2: like being a mother, like you're always putting your children
- 35:13Speaker 2: first and their needs first. But then I also realize that,
- 35:17Speaker 2: like if I'm not taking care of myself, then how
- 35:20Speaker 2: could I pour into them or give them the best
- 35:24Speaker 2: of me when I'm not giving myself the best of
- 35:27Speaker 2: me either. And sometimes I struggle with this and wellness
- 35:30Speaker 2: too as well, because a lot of the things that
- 35:32Speaker 2: we look at and when we're talking about wellness and
- 35:35Speaker 2: the idea of being well centers around this idea that
- 35:37Speaker 2: we're like all these broken people and broken beings when
- 35:41Speaker 2: we're not really as broken as we think. And it's
- 35:44Speaker 2: okay to like be in two different places. Like you
- 35:47Speaker 2: can be broken and healing at the same time, you
- 35:50Speaker 2: can be like happy and sad, you can be scared
- 35:53Speaker 2: and strong, you can be all these things, because that's
- 35:57Speaker 2: the compassion part that comes along with it. And like,
- 36:00Speaker 2: the words that we choose to speak into ourselves should
- 36:03Speaker 2: be the exact same words that we speak onto others.
- 36:06Speaker 2: So if you're like, you know, girl, you look good today,
- 36:09Speaker 2: then Emily, you look good too, Like you know what
- 36:10Speaker 2: you mean. Like it's so easy for us to extend
- 36:13Speaker 2: that grace and compassion to so many others, but never
- 36:16Speaker 2: extending that saying grace and compassion to ourselves. And so
- 36:19Speaker 2: like that's something that I've been exploring a lot in
- 36:21Speaker 2: my work because I think it's really important, and I
- 36:25Speaker 2: don't necessarily feel like we do enough of that in
- 36:27Speaker 2: our work.
- 36:28Speaker 4: Yeah, the question that comes to mind then, for someone
- 36:32Speaker 4: who not just in this conversation but everywhere they hear
- 36:36Speaker 4: have more grace for yourself and be kind and compassionate.
- 36:39Speaker 4: And we're talking about, you know, treating your body like
- 36:41Speaker 4: it's your home, and they're like, how how do I start?
- 36:46Speaker 3: Where do I start?
- 36:47Speaker 4: How am I supposed to get on this page where
- 36:50Speaker 4: I have more grace with myself when maybe it feels
- 36:53Speaker 4: as though the world is crumbling around you, or things
- 36:56Speaker 4: are going wrong with work, or you're getting out of
- 36:58Speaker 4: the long term relationship. There are so many different variables
- 37:02Speaker 4: that could be complicating your personal experience. So for someone
- 37:07Speaker 4: who wants to be better at treating their body like
- 37:10Speaker 4: their home and having that compassion, where do they begin?
- 37:14Speaker 2: I think it's really interesting that question, just because like,
- 37:18Speaker 2: I live in this body of being like a black woman,
- 37:23Speaker 2: and every single day I'm reminded of it. Sometimes it's
- 37:29Speaker 2: comfortable and a lot of the times it's not comfortable.
- 37:32Speaker 2: And so I feel like when you're living in a
- 37:34Speaker 2: state of constant flux, or your identities continuously othered, or
- 37:39Speaker 2: like you have like a whole bunch of intersectionalities that
- 37:41Speaker 2: you occupy. Like the first thing you know, I always
- 37:45Speaker 2: do is just like ask my heart, like how is
- 37:46Speaker 2: it doing? Like where am I at? How does this
- 37:49Speaker 2: feel for me? I've learned how to be friends with myself,
- 37:55Speaker 2: and I think that, like it sounds so easy when
- 37:57Speaker 2: we say these things like show up in compassion and
- 38:00Speaker 2: show up in grace, and I just want to be
- 38:03Speaker 2: transparent around the fact that it's hard. It's really hard
- 38:07Speaker 2: showing up and being in compassion to yourself. Is I
- 38:11Speaker 2: just started simply by like journaling and like taking the
- 38:16Speaker 2: opportunity to just to write how I felt out, what
- 38:18Speaker 2: I was feeling, what I was going through, and then
- 38:21Speaker 2: also just learning, like I said, to learn how to
- 38:23Speaker 2: be my own friend, so learning how to speak kindness
- 38:28Speaker 2: into my own life. Like, for example, I would have
- 38:32Speaker 2: this tendency like when I could get overwhelmed and be like,
- 38:35Speaker 2: oh my God, like like this sucks, right, but like
- 38:39Speaker 2: then changing the language that I would say to myself
- 38:42Speaker 2: to be like Okay, like it's fine, like I'm good
- 38:44Speaker 2: like or not necessarily like that, but like in the
- 38:46Speaker 2: sense of just being able to be in a place
- 38:48Speaker 2: where I would just be saying kinder things to myself.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Like you know, sometimes we're like, oh, I'm so stupid.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Who told you that?
- 38:57Speaker 1: Like you know what I mean?
- 38:57Speaker 2: No, you're not stupid, So how do you ref that language?
- 39:00Speaker 2: So then you're like, hey, like I made a bad decision.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It might not have been the smartest decision for me
- 39:05Speaker 2: to make, but that doesn't mean you're stupid.
- 39:07Speaker 1: So like, really.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Being mindful of the words that you speak over yourself.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Saul Williams has this quote where he's like, be careful
- 39:16Speaker 2: of what you eat, Like, be mindful what you eat
- 39:18Speaker 2: and when you eat. It's not just talking about the
- 39:20Speaker 2: food that you put in your body, but like the
- 39:22Speaker 2: music that you listen to, the books that you read,
- 39:24Speaker 2: but more importantly, the words that you say to yourself, right,
- 39:27Speaker 2: because you feed yourself right, and so if you feed
- 39:30Speaker 2: yourself negative thoughts, then negative is what ends up growing
- 39:34Speaker 2: and manifesting, right, and so like it's a simple practice
- 39:38Speaker 2: of just like changing the language in terms of how
- 39:40Speaker 2: I show up for myself. It's a simple practice of
- 39:43Speaker 2: just checking in and saying, hey, Rebacca, like how are
- 39:44Speaker 2: you feeling today? Because like, when was the last time
- 39:46Speaker 2: you asked yourself.
- 39:47Speaker 1: How do you feel? You know?
- 39:48Speaker 2: And even with my kids, I'm always like, how is
- 39:50Speaker 2: your day? And they're like it was good, and I'm like, well,
- 39:52Speaker 2: what made your day good?
- 39:54Speaker 1: Right?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Because like you also need to start recognizing and knowing
- 39:58Speaker 2: like what are the things that feed you? And what
- 40:02Speaker 2: are the things that take away from you? What are
- 40:04Speaker 2: the things that like don't nourish you? And then also
- 40:09Speaker 2: recognizing that, you know, we all can admit that we
- 40:11Speaker 2: live in a society that really cultivates us cultivating practices
- 40:17Speaker 2: of shrinking ourselves of toxic energy towards ourselves. As much
- 40:21Speaker 2: as you and I curate content, we're curating content that
- 40:26Speaker 2: is premised on this idea of seeking validation from somebody else, right,
- 40:29Speaker 2: Like hearts likes like you know what I mean, like
- 40:31Speaker 2: figuring out this algorithm, so like you know what I mean,
- 40:35Speaker 2: Like it's placing our worth again in somebody else's hands
- 40:39Speaker 2: rather than recognizing that we need to placing our worth
- 40:42Speaker 2: on our own. Yeah, and I think that's like really
- 40:45Speaker 2: super important.
- 40:46Speaker 1: And so for me, that.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Looks like does the server Rebecca right? Is this an
- 40:52Speaker 2: alignment with Rebecca? Does this mean shutting down conversations? Because
- 40:56Speaker 2: I'm just not no, it's not it's not healthy for me.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I'm not even healthy for you, right, the person who's
- 41:02Speaker 2: coming at you like that. It means saying no and
- 41:05Speaker 2: letting go of people who are blocking your light, or
- 41:10Speaker 2: who are trying to shrink you, who are trying to
- 41:13Speaker 2: like prevent you from growing and glowing whatever. And again,
- 41:18Speaker 2: it's just about having those important conversations with yourself in
- 41:21Speaker 2: terms of just thinking of the ways in which you
- 41:24Speaker 2: can speak kindness into yourself, so as much as you're
- 41:28Speaker 2: like giving it to other people, giving that extending that
- 41:31Speaker 2: same compassion and grace back to yourself.
- 41:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and I loved this quote that you shared on
- 41:37Speaker 4: your social media say you said today, I rise knowing
- 41:41Speaker 4: that healing our curves the moment I stop trying to
- 41:44Speaker 4: find and build a home in others. Finding and building
- 41:46Speaker 4: a home within, no matter how big or small that
- 41:50Speaker 4: home is, is an act of radical self love.
- 41:55Speaker 3: That idea of trying.
- 41:57Speaker 4: To build a home within others is us so often
- 42:02Speaker 4: reaching out for that external validation, reaching out for what
- 42:05Speaker 4: we feel as though we are lacking. And it's normal, right,
- 42:10Speaker 4: Like that is a normal behavior. We are sociable people.
- 42:13Speaker 4: We are sociable beings we are meant to connect with others.
- 42:17Speaker 4: But when you place all of your value on the
- 42:22Speaker 4: perspective or actions of someone else, then you lose a
- 42:25Speaker 4: piece of yourself In that, I.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Would say that I lost myself a lot of times
- 42:31Speaker 2: along the way. I might get a little emotional. I
- 42:35Speaker 2: wrote that specifically coming from the perspective of placing my
- 42:40Speaker 2: value in worth in other people's hands and allowing that
- 42:44Speaker 2: to determine who I was and not recognizing that, like
- 42:47Speaker 2: I was giving them too much power and not giving
- 42:50Speaker 2: myself enough power. You know. Like just the other day,
- 42:52Speaker 2: I was talking to one of my friends and she
- 42:54Speaker 2: was telling me about something that she was going through,
- 42:57Speaker 2: and then I was just like, but like what do
- 42:59Speaker 2: you want right, Like you're telling me about this person,
- 43:02Speaker 2: but like like I'm recognizing where does this come from?
- 43:06Speaker 2: Where does this need for us to like prove ourselves
- 43:10Speaker 2: and our value and our worth, you know, And so
- 43:13Speaker 2: like I had to do like a lot of like
- 43:15Speaker 2: inner work and recognize that, Like, you know, I I
- 43:20Speaker 2: grew up. You know, I love my mother and she
- 43:24Speaker 2: was an amazing person, but I didn't actually have the
- 43:26Speaker 2: most healthiest relationship with my mother. And so like I
- 43:29Speaker 2: had to do a lot of like inner child work
- 43:32Speaker 2: and like healing from that and recognizing that like that's
- 43:35Speaker 2: where the need to prove my worth started and originated from.
- 43:40Speaker 2: And then you know, like navigating this space. Like my
- 43:44Speaker 2: family immigrated to Canada, my mom was a nanny, so like,
- 43:48Speaker 2: you know, that's not exactly like the coolest thing to
- 43:50Speaker 2: talk about in front of your friends at school, and
- 43:54Speaker 2: having to prove my worth there, right, and then like
- 43:57Speaker 2: you know, just trying to like you know, I was
- 44:01Speaker 2: supposed to go to school and become a lawyer, like
- 44:03Speaker 2: because that was a thing. Like clearly I'm not a lawyer,
- 44:05Speaker 2: but like these ideals of who we're supposed to be
- 44:10Speaker 2: that are predicated on somebody else's opinion, and then our
- 44:13Speaker 2: incestant need to be like, hey, hey, look at me,
- 44:16Speaker 2: Like I'm doing it right, right, Like I'm pretty enough, right,
- 44:20Speaker 2: Like I'm skinny enough, right, Like now you'll like me.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Right. I did all these things.
- 44:24Speaker 2: I was in a relationship where I was with somebody
- 44:27Speaker 2: and we have three beautiful children because of that. But
- 44:31Speaker 2: like it might not have been the most healthiest because
- 44:34Speaker 2: I placed so much of my worth and my value
- 44:38Speaker 2: in their hands. And like when things didn't work out.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Then I was just like, well, then what do I
- 44:47Speaker 2: have for myself?
- 44:48Speaker 1: People can reject you. You just lose sight of who
- 44:50Speaker 1: you are.
- 44:51Speaker 2: And then it's like a long climb back up that
- 44:55Speaker 2: mountain to get back to like the mountaintop of Rebecca
- 44:59Speaker 2: or the mountain to of Emily, like the mountain top
- 45:01Speaker 2: of who you are, because you spent so much of
- 45:04Speaker 2: your time giving yourself to somebody else or others, right,
- 45:11Speaker 2: and so like my whole identity, I'm like a mother,
- 45:13Speaker 2: I'm a friend, I'm a sister, I'm a daughter, like
- 45:15Speaker 2: you know what I mean. But I'm still Rebecca. So
- 45:18Speaker 2: like I'm feeding into all these other identities. But when
- 45:21Speaker 2: am I feeding into Rebecca? I'm pouring into Rebecca. And
- 45:24Speaker 2: how often does that happen? And then more importantly, it's
- 45:27Speaker 2: like I'm placing my worth in your hands and you
- 45:32Speaker 2: can crush me, like you can just squeeze that hand,
- 45:35Speaker 2: and like the essence of who I am is just
- 45:38Speaker 2: like evaporates into dust and then you're like lost, right,
- 45:44Speaker 2: and then it's like then what happens? And so like
- 45:48Speaker 2: I had this epiphany where I was just like, you know,
- 45:50Speaker 2: lots of therapy and lots of yoga and lots of
- 45:55Speaker 2: like sessions where I was just like venting and being
- 45:58Speaker 2: angry and healing because healing was not pretty. To come
- 46:03Speaker 2: to this recognition that like I'd given so much of
- 46:06Speaker 2: myself and I lost who I was. I, you know,
- 46:11Speaker 2: wanted to reclaim those parts of me that were fearless,
- 46:14Speaker 2: those reclaim those parts of me that was like, you know,
- 46:17Speaker 2: I'm a little goofy, I'm a little this, I'm a
- 46:18Speaker 2: little that like. But I kind of like put those
- 46:21Speaker 2: on the back burner because that's not how people wanted
- 46:23Speaker 2: me to show up. But I was like, this is
- 46:25Speaker 2: who I am, and like, if you can't necessarily accept
- 46:28Speaker 2: me for who I am, maybe you're not the right
- 46:29Speaker 2: person to be in my life.
- 46:30Speaker 4: Hell yeah, right, yeah, all of everything that you're getting
- 46:34Speaker 4: into here, it's a struggle that many can relate to,
- 46:38Speaker 4: and oftentimes it takes these difficult, hurdle moments situations for
- 46:45Speaker 4: us to genuinely understand the value of investing in self.
- 46:50Speaker 4: Right when I learned the importance of investing in myself,
- 46:54Speaker 4: I was not only better to show up for myself,
- 46:57Speaker 4: but then, of course, as you touched on show up
- 47:00Speaker 4: for other people that I care about, And it is
- 47:03Speaker 4: really easy to get caught up in giving so much
- 47:06Speaker 4: of yourself to someone else that you feel as though
- 47:08Speaker 4: your worth is sitting in their hands. But we have
- 47:12Speaker 4: the opportunity to make our body, our soul, our vessel
- 47:16Speaker 4: and come to terms with just how much value we
- 47:19Speaker 4: have to bring to the table. And the healing is hard.
- 47:22Speaker 4: It also never stops.
- 47:24Speaker 2: And that's one thing if anybody gets anything from this conversation,
- 47:29Speaker 2: Cause you know, I was talking to somebody and they
- 47:31Speaker 2: were just like adamant and I think I even like
- 47:34Speaker 2: posted about this. They were like they were saying something
- 47:37Speaker 2: to me and they're like, but are you healed? But
- 47:38Speaker 2: are you healed? Like you went through all this stuff,
- 47:41Speaker 2: but are you healed? And I'm like, no, I'm not healed.
- 47:45Speaker 2: And you know what, that's okay because they feel like
- 47:49Speaker 2: healing was supposed to be like this final destination, like
- 47:52Speaker 2: it's healing meaning it is a process, like meaning that
- 47:56Speaker 2: it's continuous and like you're along this journey and something
- 47:58Speaker 2: else might pop up, you know what I mean? And
- 48:01Speaker 2: so like I really think that, like you know, we
- 48:04Speaker 2: have to get rid of these static notions and understanding
- 48:06Speaker 2: that like healing is a fixed, one last stop destination.
- 48:11Speaker 2: And it's okay for you to be dynamic and fluid
- 48:15Speaker 2: and understand that, like healing is a journey, Like we're
- 48:19Speaker 2: placed on this path called or journey called life. Right,
- 48:23Speaker 2: it's not linear. There's so many ebbs and flows, ups
- 48:26Speaker 2: and downs circles. So why would we have the expectation
- 48:30Speaker 2: that processes along this journey called life, such as healing
- 48:34Speaker 2: would just be one static like one stop, like one
- 48:38Speaker 2: shoe fits all kind of vibe it' that's definitely the way.
- 48:43Speaker 3: That's not the way. It's not it, That is not it.
- 48:46Speaker 1: And I think if more people did that, then.
- 48:50Speaker 2: More people would have more compassion to them towards themselves,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and more people would have understanding, and they would like
- 49:00Speaker 2: understanding for themselves and for each other. And I think,
- 49:04Speaker 2: you know, if more people were to be able to
- 49:06Speaker 2: do that, then you're just creating a different dynamic for
- 49:11Speaker 2: how you show up for yourself and how you allow
- 49:14Speaker 2: others to show up for yourselves, and even how we
- 49:16Speaker 2: you know, cultivate better practices around not just self care,
- 49:19Speaker 2: but the larger practice of like community care, which is
- 49:22Speaker 2: essentially what the whole entire essence of what wellness is
- 49:25Speaker 2: supposed to be about.
- 49:26Speaker 1: It's about us taking care of each other, taking care
- 49:28Speaker 1: of each other.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it starts with you, though, Rebecca. I'm so excited
- 49:32Speaker 4: that we were able to make this happen and sit
- 49:34Speaker 4: down together. This is a really great conversation. I'm leaving
- 49:37Speaker 4: with a lot of thoughts about how I can more
- 49:40Speaker 4: so invest in my body and maybe prioritize that again,
- 49:43Speaker 4: because again, that prioritization, it's like something that you start doing,
- 49:47Speaker 4: but you always have to keep relearning it, right, Yeah.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and not to feel guilty about it either, totally.
- 49:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:53Speaker 2: I feel like there's a lot of language around making
- 49:55Speaker 2: us feel guilty around that, and it's not it's not selfish.
- 49:58Speaker 2: It's totally not selfish. And I don't know, like your
- 50:01Speaker 2: ancestors didn't work this hard for you to sit and
- 50:05Speaker 2: shrink your light and not prioritize yourself like you know,
- 50:09Speaker 2: like keep going exactly.
- 50:11Speaker 3: How do the hurdlers follow along with you? How do
- 50:13Speaker 3: they keep up with you? Give us your details.
- 50:15Speaker 2: They can find me on Instagram obviously at Rebecca Price,
