- 0:00The Lord had called them up the mount, He wanted to give them
- 0:02the higher law. He wanted them to be his people,
- 0:05and they refused. Now Joshua gets to lead the
- 0:09children of Israel in to the promised land.
- 0:11This new arrangement is very difficult.
- 0:15It also places the wives in a position of great leadership.
- 0:19Somebody covets a wedge of gold, buries it in his tent.
- 0:23The battle goes poorly. Israelites are killed.
- 0:26Joshua, please. Before the Lord, I thought you
- 0:29were going to protect us. What happened?
- 0:32The Lord says, shout. The walls fall down, the people
- 0:35are destroyed. The woman that lived there was a
- 0:39harlot. Her name is Rahab.
- 0:41She uses a scarlet rope. This is one of the greatest
- 0:44things I found in this chapter is what happens in chapter 6
- 0:47with that rope. Hello.
- 0:51Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:53I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that tries to build
- 0:57enduring faith in Jesus Christ by illuminating and defending
- 1:00our scriptures. And I love the Old Testament.
- 1:04I love the Old Testament, this year especially because I'm
- 1:07looking at the women and today we're look at some handmaidens.
- 1:10We're going to look at a harlot, a very famous harlot, and she
- 1:13becomes a heroine. So I hardly want to call her a
- 1:15harlot. And then lots of other women
- 1:17were in the book of Joshua. And this is a wonderful time
- 1:21when the children of Israel are able to enter into their
- 1:24promised land. We've got Rahab and her sisters
- 1:27and her mother, and we've got the wives of the 2 1/2 tribes on
- 1:31the east side of Jordan are mentioned.
- 1:33We've got the wives and the women in Jericho and I.
- 1:36We've got a daughter of Ancor. We've got the Israelite women in
- 1:41the assembly. And of course the mention of all
- 1:44the marriages with women of the nations.
- 1:47I just want to go back to where we finished last time, this idea
- 1:50of a 40 year Exodus cycle where you go through these events that
- 1:55actually are typifying of the Christ of the Messiah.
- 2:00As we go through the Red Sea, Paul says it's like being
- 2:04baptized and the manna in the water is a sacrament.
- 2:06And now that we've ended the 40 years, this period of
- 2:09purification we talked about in the book of Leviticus is a time
- 2:13period that a woman waits for 40 days after the birth of a son.
- 2:17That's her purification period before she returns to the
- 2:20temple. Everyone else is probably under
- 2:2360 years old because everyone 20 and older have died out or been
- 2:29translated. I believe Moses was translated
- 2:31and now Joshua gets to lead the children of Israel into the
- 2:36Promised Land. And the reason why this is so
- 2:38exciting for me and how this fits into the Exodus cycle is
- 2:41his name. Remember Jesus name is Yeshua or
- 2:45Joshua. He probably was raised in
- 2:47Aramaic and he probably spoke some Hebrew as well as the Greek
- 2:51names. But Jesus is the Greek name for
- 2:53Joshua or for Yeshua, and the idea that it means save now or
- 2:59one who saves or or save us is just beautiful because Joshua is
- 3:04also taking that role. And just as Joshua took the
- 3:08children of Israel into their promised land, so our Lord has
- 3:12lived and died to take us into the promised eternal lands.
- 3:19And this is just beautiful. We see Joshua not only as a type
- 3:23of Christ in his name and in his actions, but he was also a type
- 3:28of Moses, this great prophet. You remember back, Joshua was
- 3:31one of the 12 spies. He was a general in Moses army.
- 3:35He'd been working with them. The Lord promises to help him as
- 3:38he helped Moses and as Moses parted the Red Sea to Save the
- 3:44Children of Israel, so Joshua will open the Jordan River and
- 3:50the Israelites are allowed to cross through.
- 3:53And this crossing through is very symbolic as well.
- 3:56He has a purification period before they celebrate the
- 3:59Passover, afterward and afterward.
- 4:02The captain of the Lord's host, you know, an Angel of the Lord,
- 4:06comes to him and says, take off thy shoes.
- 4:10This sacred idea of being able to be in the presence of the
- 4:16divine and remove our earthly cares, our earthly closing, and
- 4:22any filthiness and come before Him is beautiful.
- 4:28And as Joshua and the children of Israel have come through the
- 4:32Sinai Peninsula and back up now to the top of the Dead Sea,
- 4:36there on the east side of that, they gather together and the
- 4:40Lord commands Joshua to tell them to prepare themselves.
- 4:44I'm going to read from the BSB translation of Joshua 110.
- 4:49Tell the people, prepare your provisions, and for within these
- 4:54three days you will cross the Jordan and go in and take
- 4:59possessions of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to
- 5:03possess. Well, this is a very exciting
- 5:06time. And it's not just preparing
- 5:07their provisions. You know, they are to prepare
- 5:10their hearts and their minds too.
- 5:12These people have been desert nomads for their entire lives.
- 5:17This is a very exciting life they have.
- 5:20They have buried their parents. They've buried their older
- 5:23aunties and uncles and grandparents and they now are in
- 5:28the condition of purification that the Lord wants to take them
- 5:31in. And that's where we get to the
- 5:33women of this story. And Joshua refers to the wives
- 5:38of these 2 1/2 tribes that are settling on the east side of
- 5:41Jordans. We've got half of Manasseh and
- 5:43Gad and Reubens tribe who are all on the other side of the
- 5:46Jordan. He says, now these men have got
- 5:49to go over and help us take the promised land like we promised.
- 5:52But you women and children are allowed to stay here.
- 5:55Now this new arrangement is very difficult.
- 6:00It also places the wives in a position of great leadership and
- 6:04responsibility. You know, not only are they just
- 6:06managing their homes and raising their children, but they are
- 6:09doing it single parenting and they are doing it in a new land
- 6:13without a lot of understanding on the climate, on the culture.
- 6:18You know, things are very different here.
- 6:20And this may have lasted for more than a year.
- 6:21You know, this may have been just portions of a year or or
- 6:24years at a time. I don't know what how often them
- 6:27their men had to go out to battle back and forth, but we
- 6:30know that they started by all going over.
- 6:32I think it's also interesting is to you look at the text Joshua
- 6:34chapter one, verse 14. Do you see that it mentions the
- 6:37wives before the children? Now, this emphasis, of course,
- 6:41on their primary role in sustaining the community during
- 6:45their men's absences. You know, I just think it
- 6:47required tremendous faith on these women's part and also
- 6:52tremendous work. They had to watch their husbands
- 6:54depart. They had no guarantee of them
- 6:57coming back. This was very frightening.
- 6:59They've already fought many wars when people were killed.
- 7:02I just feel like it demonstrates their covenant obligation and
- 7:07sometimes it demanded an enormous sacrifice from their
- 7:11families, not just the wives, but the children.
- 7:14You know, they had to bury that burden of single handedly
- 7:17maintaining that household and the communities without the
- 7:20support of their young strong husbands, sons, etcetera.
- 7:25But they crossover and these 3 tribes may have been watching as
- 7:29this crossing came. But when it's time to cross,
- 7:32they go on one of these lowest points in the planet.
- 7:36You know, it's several 100 feet below sea level.
- 7:38And it's called Bethabara. Now, when you take that apart in
- 7:42Hebrew, Beth is House of or place of and barach is the place
- 7:46of the crossing. So it's it's the House of the
- 7:49Ford. It's where they came through.
- 7:51And does that name ring a bell? I hope you recognize that as the
- 7:56gospel of John. And in the Book of Mormon, we
- 7:59learned that this is where John the Baptist was baptizing.
- 8:02This is where Jesus came. You know, we're we're right back
- 8:06to the same spot. So as you're reading the Old
- 8:07Testament, see how it foreshadows the New Testament
- 8:11and see how the Book of Mormon acts as a second witness.
- 8:14This is really a beautiful little detail that they are
- 8:17crossing here at this lowest part.
- 8:20And if we're going to talk about the baptism, I also want to talk
- 8:23about how this is being born again.
- 8:27They're going through the water again.
- 8:29And remember, the waters do not separate until the men are
- 8:33walking in the water with the ark and the covenant.
- 8:37But this idea of a rebirth, of a rebaptism, of a recommitment,
- 8:42they're once again starting again to be a covenant people,
- 8:46starting again to enter the promised land as they had before
- 8:50with Moses. Remember, the 40 years in the
- 8:52wilderness was not necessary. You know, the Lord had called
- 8:55them up the mount. He wanted to give them the
- 8:57higher law. He wanted them to be his people,
- 8:59and they refused. So here Joshua comes in a time
- 9:04where we hope they can actually make it through it.
- 9:07And as you recall, the account describes that stones were taken
- 9:12from the middle of the Jordan, and these 12 Stones, one for
- 9:16each tribe, are used to build a memorial.
- 9:19And as the Levites and the priests are carrying the Ark of
- 9:23the Covenant across and the Israelites follow them, they
- 9:28arrive in the Promised land. It's a desert wasteland now, but
- 9:32it's more, a lot more green than they ever had when they were
- 9:35down in the Sinai Peninsula. As we come into the Promised
- 9:39Land, we learn about Rahab. This is Joshua chapter 2, and
- 9:44she has another part of the story that's repeated in chapter
- 9:466 that we'll get into. But it sounds like just like in
- 9:50cities in Europe, they actually had houses built on the walled
- 9:54cities. And because this was a very
- 9:57important area of the crossroads of the east and the West and the
- 10:02desert, the city of Jericho was completely encircled by a wall.
- 10:07One of these homes that were on the wall had some sort of an inn
- 10:10in it, an innkeeper or some place for lodging.
- 10:13But in our text, it's very clear in both the Hebrew and the
- 10:17English that the word is that the woman that lived there was a
- 10:20harlot. Her name is Rahab.
- 10:22She's a prostitute or a harlot is the word the choose.
- 10:25But by the time we get through history, a few years, people
- 10:28like Josephus say she wasn't a harlot, she was an innkeeper.
- 10:33She was keeping people there. And because sometimes innkeepers
- 10:36were harlot, it's the same word. Well, I do not know.
- 10:40I don't want to say I've received revelation on this one
- 10:43and I just want to know that it's very important that we
- 10:47don't think these two righteous men who are coming in to check
- 10:53out the city, to spy, to see what they information they can
- 10:57give back to Joshua, their general to know how to proceed.
- 11:01We're not going into a harlot's house to for what is usually
- 11:06done in a harlot's house. This is not what they were there
- 11:09for. Remember, Joshua was one of
- 11:11Moses spies. He's one of the most noble,
- 11:14righteous people that we had leaving Egypt.
- 11:17And, and Moses has repeated over and over the need for the law of
- 11:23chastity and fidelity. And if you look across the time
- 11:26of their scripture from Adam, this has been repeated and
- 11:30repeated. These are the greatest people
- 11:33that are coming to do this work, not the worst.
- 11:37And so one problem that we have with the saying that Rahab's a
- 11:40harlot is we wonder why they're going to that house.
- 11:44But there is no evidence that anything inappropriate was done
- 11:48there because she already has a testimony of the God of Israel.
- 11:55And we read in chapter 2 that that she allows the men to come
- 12:00in. She knows who they are.
- 12:02And when the soldiers of the city come by to say there's two
- 12:06men that came in here, we've seen them and we know they're
- 12:08they're Israelites, she lies to them.
- 12:10She said yes, the men came, but I did not know where they came
- 12:17from. And at dusk, when it was time to
- 12:20close the city gates, they left and I don't know where they
- 12:22went. Why don't you hurry out quickly?
- 12:23Go catch them. You know, this is versus 4:00
- 12:25and 5:00. So she sends them out and the
- 12:29military follows where she directs them.
- 12:32And the men are upstairs on the rooftop hiding underneath the
- 12:37flax. So we know not only is she
- 12:40helping with some sort of an inn or, or her family is all there,
- 12:44but she also is very industrious and she makes a covenant with
- 12:48these men. She agrees to protect them.
- 12:53And then she testifies that I know your God is the God that
- 12:58has saved you. And she says I want you to
- 13:02protect me. I have protected you.
- 13:04I have kept your name safe. Would you please protect my
- 13:07family? They agree.
- 13:09And as they are let down the next morning out of the city,
- 13:15she uses a scarlet rope, which is very significant that when
- 13:19they come back, they have that same rope.
- 13:22And I want to have you just think about that.
- 13:24Think about that because I'm so excited.
- 13:26This is one of the greatest things I found in this chapter
- 13:29is what happens in Chapter 6 with that rope.
- 13:32But before we get to Chapter 6, everyone is ready to come in.
- 13:36And Joshua, it says, had not circumcised the people for 40
- 13:40years. So all the men who had been
- 13:44uncircumcised, young, old, had to be circumcised before they
- 13:50enter into any more of the promised land, and they wait for
- 13:53days afterward. I mentioned earlier that the
- 13:55Flint knives that they used in the ancient world that have been
- 13:58found through archaeology both in the Old World and the New
- 14:02World, are extremely sharp and that when you look under a
- 14:06microscope, they're nearly as sharp as anything we can produce
- 14:11Now. You know, Flint has an amazing
- 14:13ability to keep its sharpness. So I, as a nurse, I'm very
- 14:17interested in these kind of medical things.
- 14:19And I'm very sorry that they had to go through this.
- 14:22You know, if you didn't know what you were doing.
- 14:24There's a 50% fatality rate in an in adult men having a
- 14:28circumcision at this time. But it appears that these people
- 14:32were spared. Their lives were maintained, and
- 14:35after the healing and the covenant renewal that it
- 14:38represented from the time of Abraham as the sign of the
- 14:42covenant, which is so hard for us to understand but so
- 14:46beautiful to see, that they were willing to do whatever was
- 14:51required to live what God asked them to do.
- 14:55So as the children of Israel have now crossed the Jordan, the
- 14:59men have healed from their circumcisions, the Lord tells
- 15:03them to prepare for a Passover and the manna stops.
- 15:07It says in chapter 5 verse 12, they ate the fruit of the land
- 15:12and I just cannot imagine what it would have been involved if
- 15:15you had not cooked a meal in 40 years.
- 15:18Now that isn't true. Remember, they did get the quail
- 15:21and I'm sure that they were out gathering up things that they
- 15:24could find a Bush that had something or perhaps a lizard or
- 15:28something, I don't know. But the last pieces of manna are
- 15:33in the Ark of the Covenant. That's all they have left.
- 15:36If you remember in the Ark of the Covenant, there was the the
- 15:3910 commandments on the stone tablets, the miraculous rod of
- 15:44Aaron that budded and bloomed and produced the fruit to show
- 15:50who had the authority, and then a golden pot of manna.
- 15:56And that's all that's left. Once they have come across a few
- 16:01miles, they come to the city of Jericho again.
- 16:04And now we're in Joshua 6. Verse 17 says though, that
- 16:07before the city was destroyed, the Lord allowed them to go get
- 16:13Rahab. And it says she's a prostitute,
- 16:16she's a harlot. Again, every time her name is
- 16:18mentioned, it's tied to that, unfortunately.
- 16:22But in verse 17, it continues on that only Rahab the prostitute
- 16:26and all who are with her in her house shall be spared because
- 16:30she hid the spies that we sent. I am sure that from the time
- 16:35that Rahab sent out the spies of Israel until the day her family
- 16:39was saved, she was praying for safety.
- 16:43She knew what was going to happen.
- 16:45And in her heart she had made a promise and they had made a
- 16:49promise. I'm sure she was praying that
- 16:50they would remember that promise.
- 16:53And the reason why I believe she's a praying woman is because
- 16:55not only is she converted and her family is converted, but she
- 17:00becomes the great, great grandmother of King David.
- 17:05You know, this is Boaz's grandmother.
- 17:07And then the line through our Savior's adopted father Joseph
- 17:11is through Rahab. And we read about this in
- 17:14Matthew chapter one, verse 5, and in Hebrews Chapter 11 and in
- 17:18James chapter 2. You know, she becomes the
- 17:21lineage of these great and noble ones.
- 17:24But I want to talk for a minute about this red rope.
- 17:29Do you remember? They've just prepared now to
- 17:32have the Passover again. It's the springtime and just as
- 17:36they left Egypt, the Passover included the taking of the
- 17:41lamb's blood and painting it on the doorpost and the lentils.
- 17:45And now as they are entering into the promised land, they are
- 17:49cleansed again, they are re circumcised, and they are having
- 17:53a Passover. And Rahab, around her doorpost,
- 17:58around the window that is the entrance in and out of the
- 18:02promised land for safety, is a red cord.
- 18:06Do you see that beautiful tie? The authors included this
- 18:09scarlet cord that I see as the scarlet of the Passover.
- 18:14And it is the blood of the Lamb that it represents.
- 18:18And not only is she saved, but this is a woman.
- 18:21Whether she was a harlot or an innkeeper, I don't know.
- 18:24But I know that she is saved by our Savior, by the blood of the
- 18:28Lamb, by the Redeemer and all of her household.
- 18:32And not only is she saved, but her witness and her willingness
- 18:36to come with the people of the Lord and to be protected by them
- 18:40and to testify that she knew that their God was their God,
- 18:44ends up becoming the great, great grandmother of the
- 18:49greatest king known in Israel, King David.
- 18:51It is a powerful story that as a convert we can bring in.
- 18:57She sounds like she's a Canaanite when you look at her
- 19:00name in Chronicles and in other places.
- 19:02I am convinced that she is a great role model for all of us.
- 19:06And the way the Lord does this battle is so interesting.
- 19:08I brought my shofars. I've got two of them.
- 19:10This one, they're both ram's horns, you know, obviously
- 19:13different sizes. And if I were clever enough, I
- 19:16could make a good sound. My two sons who played the
- 19:19trumpet and the French horn can, can really do a great job with
- 19:21these shofars. But these were very important in
- 19:25the role of the battle of Jericho.
- 19:27And the Lord is going to show how miraculous it can be if the
- 19:30people are purified, if the people are living their
- 19:33covenants, how the Lord will fight your battles.
- 19:36You do not need to fight them. I He is not a man of war.
- 19:39He's a man of peace. And in Joshua chapter 6, verses
- 19:428-9, the NIV reads that these 7 priests carrying seven trumpets,
- 19:48each one had a trumpet before the Lord.
- 19:51And then you have the covenant. And then they have people in
- 19:53front of them and behind them. But these trumpets are blowing
- 19:57all the time. And it's after the Ark of the
- 20:00Covenant. The rest of the army coming are
- 20:03silent. The only sound are these
- 20:06trumpets. So I want to read from Joshua
- 20:08chapter 6 verse 10 in the NIV translation.
- 20:12Joshua had commanded the army not to give a war cry.
- 20:16Do not raise your voices. Do not say a word until the day
- 20:21I tell you to shout and then shout.
- 20:26So the Ark of the Covenant is carried around the city.
- 20:29They circle the entire city one time, and then they camp, and
- 20:34the next day the same thing in silence, except for the good
- 20:37ram's horn. You know those that are playing
- 20:38these trumpets are able to blow them and then it happens again
- 20:44for six full days. It's not until the 7th day that
- 20:49they then circle the city 7 times.
- 20:51Now this 7 is a very common number in the ancient world.
- 20:54Remember, it represents wholeness, completeness, and
- 20:57sometimes even perfection, but it's part of the Lord's
- 21:01calendar. It's the seven days there as
- 21:03well. After the 7th time they'll
- 21:05Joshua says shout and they call out the Lord gives them to the
- 21:10city. The miracle of the timing is
- 21:13there's an earthquake or something at the exact same time
- 21:15the the the walls fall down, the people are destroyed and Joshua
- 21:21says do not keep anything for yourself.
- 21:24Everything will go into the Tabernacle or into the Lord's
- 21:27house and will be saved as a purification.
- 21:32And this to me is so important that these people who have
- 21:37nothing at this time, you know, they've lived as Bedouins with
- 21:41so little, go to into a place that's a well established city
- 21:45that's been along for a long, long, long time.
- 21:48And they are not to take anything and they obey and the
- 21:54Lord is with them and the precious metals are taken to go
- 21:57into the Tabernacle, are taken to build the Kingdom of God that
- 22:01was then on the earth. But we see types of this in the
- 22:05second coming. You know, if the history of the
- 22:09biblical world is going to be 7000 years before Christ comes
- 22:12again. And according to our
- 22:14understanding of the Book of Revelation that Joseph Smith
- 22:17asked questions on, anyway, this is his timeline from Section 77
- 22:22of the Doctrine Covenants. And there's going to be the
- 22:24seven plagues, and there's 7 angels.
- 22:26And I already mentioned that in the creation, there's seven eras
- 22:30or 7 periods of time. All of these things parallel the
- 22:33second coming. As we look forward to that great
- 22:36day, we will see the Lord's hand in our lives too, if we are
- 22:41completely purified. Now, the next battle, we hear
- 22:45about the sad story of Aiken's household.
- 22:48His wives and his daughters are also punished for his sins,
- 22:53which are very, very sad. As you recall.
- 22:57We go to the battle of I. They don't think there's, it's
- 23:00very hard to take. They just take a few of the
- 23:02Israelite armor up there. It's only about 30 miles north,
- 23:06and somebody covets a wedge of gold.
- 23:10His name's Aiken. He goes home.
- 23:12He buries it in his tent. The battle goes poorly.
- 23:16Israelites are killed. Joshua, please.
- 23:18Before the Lord, I thought you were going to protect, protect
- 23:20us. What happened?
- 23:22The Lord says somebody was not right.
- 23:24The reason why the story is so surprising to me, Joshua Chapter
- 23:287, is it speaks of the teamwork required for a Zion society.
- 23:33You may think that no one's seeing you do your bad thing in
- 23:36your tent, that you're hiding, but it affects the entire
- 23:39community. God needs a pure people,
- 23:43everybody. We're all related together, and
- 23:47this man and his family, we're punished first by stoning and
- 23:52then by burning. The Lord wanted to teach that
- 23:55everyone will be saved. Now, if these women and children
- 23:58were unaware, and if it wasn't their idea and they are
- 24:01completely innocent, they will be exalted in heaven.
- 24:04I don't have any doubts about that.
- 24:07But the book of Joshua ends at this great time with this formal
- 24:12covenant setting, and Joshua reminds them that there's a
- 24:16snare and a trap. This is Joshua chapter 23,
- 24:19verses 12 to 13, that if they marry out of the covenant and
- 24:26they lose their testimonies and they start flirting with things
- 24:30of the world, that they will not have the blessings promised them
- 24:36in this promised land. And tragically, we read in the
- 24:40book of Judges that they did take daughters and wives of the
- 24:44other world and they are promised the Lord's promises are
- 24:46not kept for them. So these Israelite daughters
- 24:49were taken into these Pagan household.
- 24:51We will talk a little bit more about that and judges, and it's
- 24:54tragic because Joshua warned them again.
- 24:56But in this covenant setting, Joshua has had the law carved
- 24:59into a beautiful stone and he then assembles the tribes in
- 25:05Shechem. Now, there's a couple of
- 25:07different archaeological ideas. Is this the Shechem where where
- 25:10Jacob was, where Dinah was taken?
- 25:12Is this a different place? There's a couple of locations,
- 25:16but I want to emphasize the women that are there because
- 25:20he's summoning the elders and the judges, But he gathers all
- 25:24present to make a new oath. And this is where he says,
- 25:28choose ye this day whom ye will serve.
- 25:31But As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, and that
- 25:37word is capitalized. It's Yahweh.
- 25:40We will serve the God who is our Creator and who has brought us
- 25:45out of the wilderness with a mighty and strong hand.
- 25:48And I for one, and you for two also have made these covenants,
- 25:57and I am willing to serve the Lord every day of my life.
- 26:02I'm so grateful for these scriptures that teach us how, in
- 26:06the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
