- 4:40Speaker 2: Oh March number yeah, number.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Christy. Don't don't judge me. That's okay. That's the only
- 4:48Speaker 1: old joke that you have on me is the fact
- 4:50Speaker 1: that I, like, I have a terrible memory.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah you do. I don't know how many
- 4:54Speaker 2: times you plan to hang out and you're like, what,

- 5:00Speaker 3: Well cool, I don't.

- 5:05Speaker 1: That's true.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'll sight out of mind.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I will put it so far out of my mind
- 5:10Speaker 3: that like I will forget what never even happened.
- 5:15Speaker 1: No, I can't go that deep.
- 5:18Speaker 2: It gross. Get some help, get some help.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Working on it.
- 5:28Speaker 2: No, welcome back, and you're doing a wonderful job.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yes, welcome back to book Watchers where the book where
- 5:37Speaker 3: the stories are made up and the movies don't matter.
- 5:39Speaker 3: We're just going to read it anyway and then cry
- 5:42Speaker 3: about it. Today's episode, okay, but in all seriousness is yes,
- 5:47Speaker 3: welcome back to book Watchers, where today we are going
- 5:51Speaker 3: to be going back to a story we have reviewed
- 5:55Speaker 3: in the past.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:57Speaker 3: We one of the first books that we have reviewed
- 6:01Speaker 3: was the Inheritance Cycle Yes by Christopher Palini, and within
- 6:05Speaker 3: the last year Christopher Polini has written a sequel to
- 6:10Speaker 3: that series. It's not really a sequel, it's a continuation.
- 6:15Speaker 3: His latest book, Murtok, is the fifth book in the
- 6:19Speaker 3: Inheritance Cycle. It was published on November seventh, twenty twenty three,
- 6:25Speaker 3: so a little over a year ago. And this is
- 6:28Speaker 3: probably the shortest book in his series. The only book
- 6:31Speaker 3: that probably comes close to its length is the first
- 6:36Speaker 3: Eragon book. I don't remember how many pages are in
- 6:40Speaker 3: that one, depending on like which edition you get. It's
- 6:42Speaker 3: like I think that one was around nine hundred pages.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Pause, come on, boop for pause. So y'all are wondering,
- 6:54Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you talking about a year ago. No,
- 6:56Speaker 2: we record this in November of twenty twenty four. At
- 6:58Speaker 2: the time of this at the time of it being posted,
- 7:01Speaker 2: we're either in February and or March of twenty twenty five.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So we are now back from said little for great
- 7:10Speaker 2: so pre production reasons blobby blah blah blah. We're in
- 7:14Speaker 2: the new year, Happy New Year, Happy holidays all ash Bill.
- 7:20Speaker 2: But if you look at the description below. You'll see
- 7:22Speaker 2: a link to the link through the take it to
- 7:24Speaker 2: the other podcast and Productions family of podcasts if you
- 7:29Speaker 2: will listen to some D and D, some tea, some mythology,
- 7:33Speaker 2: some spooky stuff. All that's in there, as well as
- 7:36Speaker 2: the YouTube channel. Hi, how are you gonna subscribe? But yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 2: so we'll go. Today we're talking about another book, a
- 7:45Speaker 2: continuation of the first series we did on book Watchers.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Yep, okay, now now that he's gotten the housekeeping out
- 7:55Speaker 3: of the way, so yeah, So Murtalk is actually a
- 8:01Speaker 3: little bit longer than the first Aragon book. The first
- 8:03Speaker 3: book was actually about five hundred and forty four pages.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I think the kindle edition was like five hundred and nine.
- 8:15Speaker 3: It just really depends on the edition you get it was.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The first book was around five hundred, around five hundred
- 8:20Speaker 3: and fifty pages. This book is like six hundred, close
- 8:23Speaker 3: to seven hundred pages, So it's actually pretty it's a
- 8:26Speaker 3: pretty short book. When I finished it, Like, when I
- 8:29Speaker 3: got through this book, I was actually really surprised, like, huh,
- 8:31Speaker 3: this is actually this was actually a lot shorter. It
- 8:34Speaker 3: felt like the story overall seemed like it was it
- 8:37Speaker 3: to me. It just seemed like it was shorter than
- 8:39Speaker 3: the first book because each book had like like each
- 8:42Speaker 3: book had so much going on all right, you had
- 8:47Speaker 3: like so many different like It's basically like reading these
- 8:52Speaker 3: the Inheritance books was like playing a open world game.
- 8:55Speaker 3: You had all these side quests before you like that,
- 8:57Speaker 3: you had all these side quests that were getting done
- 8:59Speaker 3: before the actual main quest was completed. So there was
- 9:03Speaker 3: kind of it was kind of something like that. But
- 9:05Speaker 3: with Murtog it was just more definitely more straight to
- 9:10Speaker 3: the point, with less deviations in the story, unlike the
- 9:13Speaker 3: other uh the other four books, well actually three of
- 9:18Speaker 3: the other books. This is all from.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The perspective of Murtog uh for those just for a
- 9:24Speaker 1: quick refresher h. Murtogg is Aragon's half brother. He is
- 9:29Speaker 1: the son of one of the force worn Morzen, and
- 9:37Speaker 1: he is also one of the last dragon writers uh
- 9:41Speaker 1: in the In the original books, when he was introduced,
- 9:45Speaker 1: he was just a he was just a regular guy.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Uh. He was raised in the court of Galbatorux after
- 9:52Speaker 3: his father died was or rather was after his father
- 9:55Speaker 3: was killed by brahm Ah, and he eventually gaped from
- 10:00Speaker 3: Galbatorus under from Galviatorus's quote unquote protection and later encountered Aragon.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Two of them traveled to the realm of the Dwarfs,
- 10:10Speaker 3: the Boar Mountains, and eventually he was captured and imprisoned
- 10:14Speaker 3: within Fatherender, the capital city.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Of the Dwarf and kingdoms.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Was the reason why he was in prison was because
- 10:22Speaker 3: he refused to allow the Varden the Rebel Alliance essentially
- 10:27Speaker 3: from looking into his mind to confirm if he is
- 10:30Speaker 3: a spy for Galbatorus. The reason why he refuses because
- 10:35Speaker 3: for most of his life he had been controlled by
- 10:37Speaker 3: Galbatorus and the one place that he always felt like
- 10:41Speaker 3: was his that no one could ever touch or take
- 10:45Speaker 3: away from him, was his mind, so he refused to
- 10:48Speaker 3: let anybody look into his mind or look through his memories.
- 10:53Speaker 3: So for a short period he was incarcerated by the
- 10:55Speaker 3: Varden because of his refusal to submit to mental screen,
- 11:01Speaker 3: but he was eventually released under good faith by the
- 11:03Speaker 3: original Varden leader Ajad, and he actually joined the fight
- 11:09Speaker 3: against Galbatorus's forces, mainly the urgles that invaded Father and Dirt,
- 11:13Speaker 3: and because of this he had gained a lot of
- 11:16Speaker 3: trust from the Varden and he would have made an
- 11:19Speaker 3: excellent He would have made an excellent addition to the
- 11:22Speaker 3: Varden's forces. However, at the end of the fight at
- 11:27Speaker 3: Father and Der, he was actually captured by the Ergles
- 11:32Speaker 3: and by Galbatoruz's forces and by traders of the Varden,
- 11:36Speaker 3: and was taken back to Galbatorux, where he was tortured
- 11:39Speaker 3: and forced to swear allegiance to Galatorus. And the thing
- 11:42Speaker 3: is is that at first Galbatorz did not break him
- 11:45Speaker 3: right away. Instead, Galbatorz decided to test to see if
- 11:50Speaker 3: Murtog would be a potential writer for one of the
- 11:55Speaker 3: two dragon eggs he still had in his possession, and
- 11:59Speaker 3: the test ended up proving to be successful because of
- 12:04Speaker 3: the two dragon eggs that were left in Galbatorux's possession,
- 12:08Speaker 3: a emerald reed one and a ruby red one. The
- 12:12Speaker 3: red dragon egg ended up hatching and this dragon ended
- 12:17Speaker 3: up bonding with Murtog, making him the second new dragon
- 12:20Speaker 3: writer in over one hundred years. Unfortunately, Galbatorux ends up
- 12:28Speaker 3: using this hatchling against Murtog, forcing Murtog to submit to him,
- 12:35Speaker 3: and Galbatorux ends up invading Murtok's mind, learns everything about
- 12:40Speaker 3: him and discovers Murtalk's true name. If you remember, true
- 12:44Speaker 3: names have power in the world of Ragon, in the
- 12:47Speaker 3: world of Allegasia, if you learn somebody's true name in
- 12:50Speaker 3: the ancient language, you gain power over these people. So
- 12:55Speaker 3: knowing someone's true name gives you true power over them.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You speak their name and you can compel them to
- 13:00Speaker 3: do anything you want. So when Galbator, Galbators not only
- 13:04Speaker 3: learns Murtog's true name, but he also learns Thorn's true name.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Thorn is the name of Murtalk's new dragon. This book
- 13:13Speaker 3: actually shows gives us a good like a glimpse in
- 13:17Speaker 3: Thorn's upbringing under under Galbatorz's control. And I gotta say
- 13:22Speaker 3: it made me want to cry because the thing is
- 13:25Speaker 3: is that, as it turns out, dragons can are also
- 13:30Speaker 3: capable of developing post traumatic stress disorder. So a little disclaimer,
- 13:35Speaker 3: there will be uh, there will be subjects.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Uh.
- 13:40Speaker 3: This book does depict scenes of trauma in the form
- 13:46Speaker 3: of post traumatic stress disorder, and not just for Thorn,
- 13:50Speaker 3: but for Murtog as well. Thorn I'll get into that
- 13:54Speaker 3: a little bit later, but he does develop an extreme
- 13:56Speaker 3: phobia of of closed spaces, so he is extremely claustrophobic,
- 14:01Speaker 3: and this is the result of Galbatorus of what he
- 14:04Speaker 3: did to poor Thorn when he was growing up.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And it wasn't just.
- 14:10Speaker 3: The claustrophobia, the things that Galbators had done to Thorn.
- 14:14Speaker 3: He used magic to force Thorn to grow a lot
- 14:18Speaker 3: faster than the dragon normally would, so by the time
- 14:22Speaker 3: the original four books ended, Thorn grew to a size
- 14:30Speaker 3: even bigger than Sophira, who had like several years to
- 14:34Speaker 3: naturally grow on her own. So while Thorn by the
- 14:40Speaker 3: end of the series was probably less than a year old,
- 14:43Speaker 3: if not a little bit more than a year old,
- 14:46Speaker 3: but yet he was already the size of a dragon
- 14:48Speaker 3: several years older, and this caused Thorn to develop personality disorders,
- 14:58Speaker 3: nothing like major it's just that for him, he's still
- 15:02Speaker 3: an adolescent dragon, but he has the body of a
- 15:04Speaker 3: more mature dragon, and he has scars from being forced
- 15:09Speaker 3: to fight pretty much his entire life. And it's also
- 15:14Speaker 3: and we also see more of how this affected Murtog.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Murtog is more paranoid, he's more mistrustful of everyone around him,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and because of his actions as Galbators's servants, he's now
- 15:32Speaker 3: viewed as an enemy, as terrible as the force worn,
- 15:37Speaker 3: so he's now so to the public at large, most
- 15:41Speaker 3: people view him as bad as his own father. Basically,
- 15:44Speaker 3: they compare him to his own father, Morzen. And it
- 15:47Speaker 3: doesn't help that he carries his father's sword, Zarak, this
- 15:51Speaker 3: ruby red sword that Morzen had used to help Galbators
- 15:57Speaker 3: kill and torment so many people. But this book is
- 16:02Speaker 3: a very it's there's a lot of character growth in
- 16:06Speaker 3: this book, I will say that, So we do see
- 16:10Speaker 3: Murtagg's character, We see him develop more as a person,
- 16:14Speaker 3: we see his character get fleshed out more, because we
- 16:17Speaker 3: didn't get to see much of that in the original
- 16:19Speaker 3: four books, Like we saw his characters somewhat grow in
- 16:23Speaker 3: book one, but then from book two and onward, he
- 16:27Speaker 3: was the enemy. There was really nothing anybody can do,
- 16:31Speaker 3: anyone can do. We weren't able to get much insight
- 16:36Speaker 3: of him as a person. But now we're going to
- 16:38Speaker 3: actually see we actually get to see a lot more
- 16:40Speaker 3: of that in this book. So if you read this,
- 16:44Speaker 3: if you've read this book, you've already known you already,
- 16:46Speaker 3: you've already experienced the traumatic things that he has gone through,
- 16:50Speaker 3: and he it doesn't stop there. The enemy he faces
- 16:54Speaker 3: in this book will actually push him to the point
- 16:57Speaker 3: of actually breaking. In fact, this enemy actually does break
- 17:02Speaker 3: him in a way that Galbators never broke him before.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And we will.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Also see how Thorn was treated well, because in certain
- 17:19Speaker 3: points Murtog really relives the memories of his time as
- 17:25Speaker 3: a slave to Galbators and we'll see how he was tormented,
- 17:28Speaker 3: how Thorn was tormented. So if you haven't read this
- 17:31Speaker 3: book yet, just disc little disclaimer. There's definitely gonna be
- 17:36Speaker 3: strong moments of abuse torture, like strong elements of post
- 17:43Speaker 3: traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, phobias. All right, So there
- 17:49Speaker 3: you're gonna you're gonna catch feels because this is gonna
- 17:51Speaker 3: really like, it's really gonna hit you hard because, especially
- 17:53Speaker 3: like with Thorn, when you learn more about Thorn's story,
- 17:57Speaker 3: it's gonna hit hard. Because when I was reading this
- 18:00Speaker 3: and it just talked about how Thorn was from the
- 18:02Speaker 3: moment he hatched, was basically tortured by Galbatorux from the start,
- 18:07Speaker 3: Damn it was. It's it was heartbreaking, all right. I mean,
- 18:13Speaker 3: it's a dragon, fictional mystical creature, but you know he's
- 18:17Speaker 3: the dragons of Allegasia are sentient creatures. They are they
- 18:23Speaker 3: are capable of thinking, and in most cases they are
- 18:26Speaker 3: more intelligent than humans. Yeah, okay, so aside from being
- 18:31Speaker 3: as intelligent as us, there that intelligence also applies to
- 18:34Speaker 3: emotional intelligence. So what they feel, what they not only
- 18:37Speaker 3: what they think, but what they feel. So you're gonna
- 18:39Speaker 3: definitely feel something for Thorn.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So just be warned.
- 18:45Speaker 3: This is a really great This is a really good book,
- 18:48Speaker 3: and I hope that Christopher Polani continues because I would
- 18:52Speaker 3: love to see more of Murtock's story and later on
- 18:55Speaker 3: Aria as well. Because while most of the original characters
- 19:00Speaker 3: from the books are not in this are not in
- 19:03Speaker 3: this book. So Aragon, he's not in this. He's mentioned
- 19:06Speaker 3: multiple times, Ericon and Sypheria mentioned most Sephira mentioned multiple times.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Aria and Fearnan are mentioned multiple times, and for those
- 19:14Speaker 3: if you forgot fear in in is Aria's Dragon. But
- 19:20Speaker 3: this is all gonna be. This is purely murtog story,
- 19:23Speaker 3: and unlike the three of the other four books, this
- 19:26Speaker 3: is it's not going to branch out into another uh
- 19:30Speaker 3: to to the respective of another character. It's all going
- 19:33Speaker 3: to be Murtog all Murtog and Thorne. Oh you good, Yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 3: I'm good. This is all gonna this story is all
- 19:43Speaker 3: gonna be from Murtok's perspective. So without further ado, let's
- 19:48Speaker 3: go ahead and get started. So this story actually takes
- 19:52Speaker 3: place about a year after the events of book four Inheritance.
- 19:59Speaker 3: So even though like I think it's been like, what
- 20:02Speaker 3: almost ten years, I think it's been exactly ten years
- 20:06Speaker 3: since the when did Han pause?
- 20:09Speaker 2: That was early two thousands, wasn't it the first book?
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah? But the last book.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Inherit since was it twenty thirteen?
- 20:21Speaker 1: I think it was?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Hand was it published?
- 20:24Speaker 1: It was?
- 20:25Speaker 3: So Inheritance was published November eighth, twenty eleven, So it's
- 20:30Speaker 3: been thirteen years. And I remember too because it came
- 20:34Speaker 3: out when I was in high school.
- 20:37Speaker 2: God stop, I graduated in ten. Oh you're aging me.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Kah, I did not do shit.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Anyway, So yes, it has been about well, actually no,
- 20:49Speaker 3: it's been more like twelve years because this book was
- 20:52Speaker 3: because Murtok was published to November seven, twenty twenty three,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and Inheritance was was November eighth, twenty eleven, So good,
- 21:02Speaker 3: twelve years between these two books. But in the within
- 21:05Speaker 3: the storyline, itself. It's only been about a year. By
- 21:08Speaker 3: this point, Aragon has already departed Allegasia. He went, he
- 21:13Speaker 3: went into the east, far beyond, like what you see
- 21:16Speaker 3: in the maps of the books. So if you look
- 21:19Speaker 3: at the map of Allegasia, you know, you see, of course,
- 21:21Speaker 3: in the west there's the Spine, there's Palanker Valley, Carba Hall,
- 21:26Speaker 3: and all these other settlements along the coast, the plains.
- 21:30Speaker 3: In the center, you have the you have the you
- 21:35Speaker 3: have the desert right in the middle, you have Duel
- 21:38Speaker 3: de Varden in the north, you have the Boar mountains
- 21:41Speaker 3: in the south, and you go to the west, there's
- 21:44Speaker 3: just nothing in the west. That's where the map ends. Well,
- 21:47Speaker 3: Aragon had already traveled, followed the river, going straight out
- 21:52Speaker 3: into the east, into the east side of the map,
- 21:56Speaker 3: and he does. Eventually it is mentioned that Aragon has
- 22:00Speaker 3: established a new writer's strongholdt just believe what is the mountain?
- 22:06Speaker 3: It's called like mount Okay.
- 22:18Speaker 1: It does say that.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Okay, so I literally saw the name of the book,
- 22:22Speaker 3: but I don't.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I had rented the book from a library, so I
- 22:24Speaker 1: don't have that book with me anymore. Oh my god,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I think it was called mounts. It's like one of
- 22:40Speaker 1: the Okay, so it says here he's so Aragon had
- 22:44Speaker 1: established the new stronghold at the tail end of the
- 22:48Speaker 1: Boar Mountains, so like where the Boar Mountains extend further
- 22:51Speaker 1: into the east eventually like tapers off, and that's where
- 22:55Speaker 1: he decides to like set up his new dragon writer base.
- 22:58Speaker 1: It's It was later made clear that the new Writer
- 23:02Speaker 1: base is being built upon a trailing remnant of the
- 23:06Speaker 1: Bore Mountains, where previously a Dwarf clan or clan's mind.
- 23:10Speaker 1: It's not clear of the stronghold refers to a singular
- 23:12Speaker 1: building or separate buildings, but notable features of the place
- 23:15Speaker 1: include a central massive hall, large room for a head
- 23:18Speaker 1: of order, and directly below this room is the Hall
- 23:21Speaker 1: of Colors, storing the sane Eldinari. It's not known if
- 23:25Speaker 1: the Hall of Colors in particular is intended to be
- 23:28Speaker 1: permanent or as more of a temporary measure, as it
- 23:30Speaker 1: is known that many times more eldinari and gallatory have
- 23:35Speaker 1: were stored in the valdessols are not currently residing within
- 23:37Speaker 1: the chamber. Damn, what the well, what's the fucking name
- 23:41Speaker 1: that I know?
- 23:42Speaker 3: It had a name. It was like mount ed or something.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well, these are all out of date.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Okay, well we're not gonna worry about that right now.
- 24:10Speaker 1: So anyway, uh.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Future devint cut that part, that part, that little extension out.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Uh So by this point Aragon had already settled. Uh
- 24:23Speaker 3: he already found a new place to establish the new
- 24:25Speaker 3: Dragon Writers stronghold. It's in the tail end of the
- 24:28Speaker 3: Boar Mountains, extending far into the east of Allegasia. Outside
- 24:32Speaker 3: of report of the reported maps. Nesuata is now the
- 24:40Speaker 3: High Queen of Aligasia. She's the queen of all of
- 24:44Speaker 3: the humans. She's the high Queen of all the human realms.
- 24:46Speaker 3: So from uh Illyria, which was formerly known as Rubin,
- 24:52Speaker 3: which is the capital of course that it includes Gilead, QAnon, Carba,
- 24:59Speaker 3: Hall tron Time, all the coastal cities, the nation in
- 25:07Speaker 3: the south called Cerda. She's basically now the ruler of
- 25:12Speaker 3: all of the lands controlled by humans, and she's established
- 25:16Speaker 3: close ties with both the elves, the Urgoles and the
- 25:20Speaker 3: dwarf and the Dwarfs making it more.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Open and united. United realm. Elves now freely travel outside
- 25:29Speaker 1: of dueled in Varden. For the past one hundred years,
- 25:32Speaker 1: elves had not had rarely, if not ever, been seen
- 25:35Speaker 1: outside of Dueleden Varden. It's the same with dwarfs.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Dwarfs are now freely traveling outside of the Boar Mountains,
- 25:43Speaker 3: establishing trade all over the human realms and with the
- 25:46Speaker 3: elves as well, and of course vice versa. And the
- 25:50Speaker 3: thing is is that Myrtog is a fugitive. He unfortunately,
- 25:58Speaker 3: he has no choice but to avoid most human settlements,
- 26:02Speaker 3: dwarfs and elves included, So he's basically on everybody's shit list. Unfortunately,
- 26:10Speaker 3: because of the things that he was forced to do
- 26:13Speaker 3: in service of Galbatorux. First and foremost, the first thing
- 26:16Speaker 3: he did, of course, was betrayed the was betray the Varden.
- 26:21Speaker 3: So of course the Varden view him in a very
- 26:25Speaker 3: poor light because he got he had. He was the
- 26:29Speaker 3: one who had kidnapped Nesuata, and he was the one
- 26:33Speaker 3: that was forced to torture her in the chambers in
- 26:37Speaker 3: the chamber of the soothsayer far beneath the city of Uruban.
- 26:43Speaker 3: He killed the previous dwarf and King Rothgar, and he
- 26:49Speaker 3: also killed the last dragon rider from the previous age.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Arragon's mentors Oramus the Elf and the Golden Dragon Glater. Well,
- 27:00Speaker 3: Glater is still alive, his consciousness is still preserved within
- 27:04Speaker 3: his eldinary, which is with Aragon. But still he has
- 27:09Speaker 3: gotten on the ship list of every free of every
- 27:12Speaker 3: free race. Maybe not the Urgoles, but still. And the
- 27:18Speaker 3: thing is is that while he does have some hope
- 27:21Speaker 3: of maybe uh making amends with both the humans and
- 27:26Speaker 3: the elves, because elves are more understanding. Yeah, they're pissed
- 27:29Speaker 3: that he killed the last last of the elder dragon writers,
- 27:34Speaker 3: but the elves are more reasonable and they're more willing
- 27:37Speaker 3: to let things go because since they live for so long, White,
- 27:40Speaker 3: what's the point of carrying grudges throughout the throughout the ages.
- 27:45Speaker 3: But the dwarves are probably gonna be on He's probably
- 27:48Speaker 3: gonna be on the dwarves permanent shiit list, because dwarves
- 27:53Speaker 3: don't let shit go. They it takes a very very
- 27:58Speaker 3: long time for them to let things go, like they
- 28:01Speaker 3: hold grudges for hundreds of years.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Like sure you are the closer to Hell.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Now we're of course we are talking about mythical dwarves. Yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 3: we're not talking about little people. So that is not
- 28:19Speaker 3: a job intended for little people we're talking about, we're
- 28:22Speaker 3: talking about like Tolkien esque dwarves, well, in this case
- 28:27Speaker 3: Pollini dwarves, which are loosely based off of the Tolkien dwarves.
- 28:32Speaker 2: See.
- 28:33Speaker 3: So so unfortunately Martag has to keep well away from
- 28:42Speaker 3: these people, all from everybody. He lives in the fringes
- 28:46Speaker 3: of civilization, which for him, him and Thorn, that's perfectly fine.
- 28:51Speaker 3: They're free, and they're they're finally free, and they can
- 28:54Speaker 3: make their own decisions, and they're not really neither of
- 28:57Speaker 3: them are really concerned about being challenged by either the elves.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Or the dwarfs.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Because Murtog is even though he no longer carries the
- 29:07Speaker 3: Eldernari that Galbators had given him, he still has a
- 29:11Speaker 3: very powerful weapon. And that weapon is the Name of Names,
- 29:14Speaker 3: which is the true name of the ancient language. True
- 29:16Speaker 3: name of the ancient language basically gives him power over
- 29:20Speaker 3: the over magic itself, so he's able to uh basically
- 29:25Speaker 3: rewrite the meaning of the ancient language if he wants.
- 29:30Speaker 1: So.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Now we find the story begins uh in the city
- 29:41Speaker 3: of Qunon, which is the northern the northernmost human city
- 29:44Speaker 3: in Alligasia. H Murtog is uh shit, well, what was
- 29:53Speaker 3: he doing in what was he doing in Qunon? So
- 30:10Speaker 3: Murtog future Devin cut that part out. So just before
- 30:20Speaker 3: Murtog had left Ubane, he had been given he had
- 30:24Speaker 3: had a short chance to speak with Aragon and the
- 30:28Speaker 3: other elderinary that they had brought with them from the well,
- 30:33Speaker 3: from the Well of from the Vault of Souls, and
- 30:36Speaker 3: he had spoken to one of the ancient dragons, Umiarroth,
- 30:39Speaker 3: and Lumiaroth had given him a warning that in his travels,
- 30:42Speaker 3: should he come across a land that is blackened and
- 30:47Speaker 3: smells of sulfur, to be wary. And the thing is
- 30:52Speaker 3: is that there are still remnants of Galbatoruz's forces still
- 30:56Speaker 3: all throughout the lands. There was a rebellion, but that
- 30:59Speaker 3: was quickly squashed by Aragon and Asuata, but still people
- 31:04Speaker 3: that were loyal to Gallators are still found here and there.
- 31:08Speaker 3: And Murtog, wanting to know more about this strange warning
- 31:14Speaker 3: that Umrath had given him, he decided to do some
- 31:16Speaker 3: searching of his own, and he finds himself speaking to
- 31:21Speaker 3: a contact in Kunon, hoping to find more information about
- 31:26Speaker 3: this strange burnt lands that smells of sulfur and can
- 31:32Speaker 3: be found and where you can, or as Umirath had said,
- 31:38Speaker 3: I had told him exactly, brittle ground and the faint
- 31:41Speaker 3: scent of brimstone. Murtog was curious, why would the dragon,
- 31:49Speaker 3: why would a dragon, particularly a dragon who who was
- 31:54Speaker 3: bonded to a writer, be afraid of a place like this? So,
- 32:01Speaker 3: wanting to do some wanting, wanting to investigate UH, he
- 32:05Speaker 3: travels throughout Alligasia and he eventually discovers that there are people,
- 32:09Speaker 3: that there is an organization calling themselves the Dreamers. These
- 32:14Speaker 3: Dreamers are clearly up to something. They they are they
- 32:19Speaker 3: can be found pretty much anywhere in Aligasia. But at
- 32:22Speaker 3: first Murtok is not really sure who these people are,
- 32:25Speaker 3: who do they serve and what they want. He does
- 32:27Speaker 3: know that they share some connection to this strange land,
- 32:30Speaker 3: that the that the direct the writers of old were
- 32:33Speaker 3: afraid of. And in his investigations in q Noon he
- 32:37Speaker 3: does meet UH. He does come across one of his UH,
- 32:41Speaker 3: one of his contacts and apparent, and this contact actually
- 32:44Speaker 3: had connections to this mysterious group called the Dreamers. Murtog
- 32:49Speaker 3: is confronted by these Dreamers. They fight and UH when
- 32:53Speaker 3: murtalk is fighting him. The he notices that these guys
- 32:55Speaker 3: are protected by wards and spelts, so, wanting to to
- 33:00Speaker 3: just get things over with, Murtog invokes the power of
- 33:03Speaker 3: the true of the name of Names to strip them
- 33:06Speaker 3: of their wards. But he's shocked to find that the
- 33:10Speaker 3: name of names has no effect on these wards, and
- 33:14Speaker 3: at first he's confused. He's confused understandably at first, but
- 33:19Speaker 3: it decides, well, looks like he's just gonna have to
- 33:22Speaker 3: do this the old fashioned way, and he proceeds to
- 33:25Speaker 3: beat the living shit out of these guys. He kills
- 33:27Speaker 3: most of them, and he tries to question another but
- 33:29Speaker 3: that man eventually, but that man instead just uh takes
- 33:34Speaker 3: his own life to prevent himself from being questioned by Murtog.
- 33:38Speaker 3: After the battle, Murtog finds that each man had a talisman,
- 33:43Speaker 3: a very crude looking talisman made out of the bones
- 33:47Speaker 3: of a raven, a raven skull and some other bones
- 33:51Speaker 3: woven into it, and after examining it, he realizes that
- 33:54Speaker 3: these talismans were what we're protecting these men. That's where
- 34:00Speaker 3: the protect the words were coming from. And as he
- 34:03Speaker 3: examined them further, he realizes that these talismans were not
- 34:06Speaker 3: enchanted with words of power.
- 34:08Speaker 1: But rather with a voice, but rather.
- 34:16Speaker 3: With verbalists magic. So magic that was cast without using
- 34:23Speaker 3: the ancient language. So in the world of Aragon, it
- 34:26Speaker 3: is possible to use magic without the ancient language. All right,
- 34:32Speaker 3: It's considered very dangerous because at that point you're just
- 34:37Speaker 3: using your pure will and thought. You're not using specific
- 34:40Speaker 3: words in the ancient language to cast the spell. You're
- 34:43Speaker 3: just going based off of intention. And it's dangerous because
- 34:46Speaker 3: if you're not careful and you think the wrong thing
- 34:49Speaker 3: while you're trying to cast a spell, it could lead
- 34:51Speaker 3: to some to disastrous effects. So clearly whoever he's dealing
- 34:56Speaker 3: with is very powerful and is skilled in using verbless magic.
- 35:02Speaker 2: That's not good.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yes, and what before he before the last uh, the
- 35:09Speaker 1: last of his assailants was killed, they do mention a name, Bochell.
- 35:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna post that name in the chat for you, Devin,
- 35:23Speaker 3: mm hmmm Bchell yep. So he doesn't know who this
- 35:30Speaker 3: Bouchell is, but he knows now that this is probably
- 35:34Speaker 3: the person behind who's in control of the dreamers now.
- 35:39Speaker 3: But because Murtog created a ruckus in Qunon, he had
- 35:44Speaker 3: to flee the city and goes and meets up with Thorn,
- 35:47Speaker 3: who is waiting for him just on the outskirts of
- 35:50Speaker 3: the city. The two of them fly and after getting
- 35:53Speaker 3: some putting some distance between them and going somewhat deeper
- 35:56Speaker 3: into duelden Varden, at least not deep enough to encounter
- 35:59Speaker 3: the elves, but deep enough to where they're far enough
- 36:02Speaker 3: away from the from the city. They take stock and
- 36:08Speaker 3: decide to plan things out. Thorn is understandably annoyed with
- 36:13Speaker 3: Murtog because when Murtok went into q Noon, he had
- 36:19Speaker 3: to leave his sword behind. So since he carries the
- 36:22Speaker 3: sword Zarak, his father's Dragon Writer's sword, a mystical sword
- 36:27Speaker 3: made out of a material called bright steel and enchanted
- 36:32Speaker 3: with some of the most powerful enchantments that you can
- 36:35Speaker 3: think of.
- 36:36Speaker 1: This sword is.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Not only the most is probably one of the most
- 36:41Speaker 3: powerful weapons in Allegasia, but it's also easily recognizable. So
- 36:45Speaker 3: he couldn't just walk into the city with this ruby
- 36:48Speaker 3: red sword. Because the thing about Dragon Writer's swords is
- 36:52Speaker 3: that they are each They were all forged by one
- 36:56Speaker 3: elf named Runon. In fact, she was the She was
- 36:59Speaker 3: the elf that forged the very first Rider's blade that
- 37:03Speaker 3: she gave to the original Aragon and uh since then
- 37:07Speaker 3: every sword that she had forged. Each sword was specifically
- 37:11Speaker 3: tailored for the rider that she made it for, and
- 37:16Speaker 3: the blades of each sword matches the color of the
- 37:19Speaker 3: drag of the dragon riders dragon. So in Xarax case,
- 37:24Speaker 3: Morzan's dragon was a ruby red dragon or a blood
- 37:28Speaker 3: red dragon, so the blade itself is blood red. It's
- 37:33Speaker 3: like a brilliant red color. And it also has a
- 37:39Speaker 3: really like an egg sized ruby on the pommel. And
- 37:44Speaker 3: every sword is like that has a blade matching the
- 37:47Speaker 3: color of the of the rider's dragon, as well as
- 37:49Speaker 3: a gemstone on the pommel that of the same color.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Aragon's sword bris singer Is has a azure blade, like
- 37:58Speaker 3: a deep blue blade with a with a big ass
- 38:01Speaker 3: with a big ass sapphire on the pommel.
- 38:05Speaker 1: So it's easy.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Those swords are easily recognizable, so Murtog has was reluctant
- 38:12Speaker 3: to carry it into the city understandably, Also, Murtog is
- 38:17Speaker 3: dealing with conflicted feelings about this sword. This sword not
- 38:22Speaker 3: only belonged to his father, but this sword also he's
- 38:25Speaker 3: felt he was on the receiving end of the sword
- 38:27Speaker 3: at one point, not because Aragon was carrying it, but
- 38:30Speaker 3: because when Murtog was just a baby, was just like
- 38:33Speaker 3: a toddler. Morzon had thrown the sword at little Murtog,
- 38:41Speaker 3: little baby Murtog and the sword and the sword had
- 38:45Speaker 3: left this massive gash on his back. His mother, who
- 38:49Speaker 3: was a skilled magician, was able to heal him, but
- 38:52Speaker 3: it left his nasty scar all across his back. And
- 38:56Speaker 3: while Murtog had considered using magic to remove the scar,
- 39:00Speaker 3: he chose to keep it as a testament of his history.
- 39:04Speaker 3: It's a reminder of what he's gone through and how
- 39:07Speaker 3: it's ultimately made him stronger. Overall, this whole book is
- 39:13Speaker 3: like the reason why Murtog is driven to discover who's
- 39:17Speaker 3: behind the Dreamers and what they're up to. He is
- 39:21Speaker 3: mainly driven by this desire to make amends for the
- 39:25Speaker 3: things he's done. He's not exactly going to apologize outright,
- 39:29Speaker 3: like oh, I'm sorry for killing the last dragon writer
- 39:32Speaker 3: of Old and for killing the King of the Dwarfs,
- 39:35Speaker 3: but he's gonna he wants to do what he can
- 39:37Speaker 3: to make things right. And ultimately you can't really fault
- 39:43Speaker 3: Murtog because he was being because he had no choice
- 39:46Speaker 3: but to do these things. When you when someone controls
- 39:49Speaker 3: your true has your true name, and they tell you
- 39:51Speaker 3: I want you to kill that guy, you have no choice. Basically,
- 39:57Speaker 3: having your true name taken from you all means that
- 39:59Speaker 3: you're free will has been taken as well.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:03Speaker 3: So, after taking stock of their situation and wanting to
- 40:08Speaker 3: figure out where where else they can go, who other
- 40:12Speaker 3: contacts that they can reach, Merzog decides to go to
- 40:22Speaker 3: the go to another city called Gilead. Gilead is a
- 40:27Speaker 3: city about halfway between Quinon and QAnon. I don't know,
- 40:33Speaker 3: I still don't know how to pronounce that city correctly.
- 40:35Speaker 3: I'm just gonna call it quenon q Noon. So it's
- 40:40Speaker 3: like Gilead is right between. It's somewhere between q Noon
- 40:43Speaker 3: and Illyria. Like I said before, Illyria was once known
- 40:48Speaker 3: as Urubine. In fact, Ilarria was the original name before
- 40:51Speaker 3: Galbatoris renamed it Urubin, but then after Naswada took over,
- 40:57Speaker 3: she read she changes back to its original name of Alarria.
- 41:01Speaker 3: So anyway, Alarria. Gilead is halfway between Alaryria and Qnon.
- 41:07Speaker 3: It is a garrison city, so it has a high
- 41:10Speaker 3: uh soldier population. Uh, So he was it's a it
- 41:16Speaker 3: was a huge risk going there, but unfortunately he feels
- 41:20Speaker 3: that he has no other choice. He needs to figure
- 41:22Speaker 3: out who the Dreamers are, more importantly, who Batchel is,
- 41:25Speaker 3: and he needs to figure out where their home base is.
- 41:28Speaker 3: So Murtag and Thorne set off to Qnon. Uh. He
- 41:33Speaker 3: intended to try to reach out to this merchant family
- 41:36Speaker 3: that was that once were pretty buddy buddy with Galbators.
- 41:41Speaker 3: After the Varden had defeated Galbators, this merchant family had
- 41:44Speaker 3: fled to Gilead in hopes of not only retaining their
- 41:49Speaker 3: vast wealth but avoiding the ire of the Varden.
- 41:54Speaker 1: So, thinking that he.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Can make contact with the with this family again, he joined.
- 41:58Speaker 3: He travels to QAnon. I'm sorry to Gilead and having
- 42:03Speaker 3: to he has to leave. Both Thorn and his swords.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Are up behind.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Thorn tries to convince him to take the sword, but
- 42:12Speaker 3: again Murtak says, I can't take the sword. People would
- 42:14Speaker 3: recognize me if they if they see it, He manages
- 42:17Speaker 3: to sneak into Murtog manages to sneak into Gilead, and
- 42:22Speaker 3: he first tries to take stock of the situation of
- 42:24Speaker 3: Gilead and try to learn subtly learn where this merchant
- 42:28Speaker 3: family is and if there's any way he can make
- 42:30Speaker 3: contact with them. However, when he attempts to make when
- 42:35Speaker 3: he attempts to reach out to this family, he's nearly
- 42:39Speaker 3: discovered by the Varden's forces because Murtzog had paid a
- 42:46Speaker 3: page boy to go into the uh go into the
- 42:50Speaker 3: castle keep of Gilead to make contact with this family
- 42:54Speaker 3: who are who are set up in the castle. But
- 42:57Speaker 3: the but the page boy opened his big mouth to
- 43:00Speaker 3: his employer, who happens to be the governor of Gilead,
- 43:06Speaker 3: and he sends out his He sends out his.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Troops to try to track down Murtog.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Murtog wasn't dumb enough to tell the kid who he was,
- 43:13Speaker 3: but still that was pretty suspicious.
- 43:15Speaker 1: UH.
- 43:15Speaker 3: They send one of the magicians from duvrang Gergatta Uh
- 43:20Speaker 3: into the city to try to look for Murtog, and
- 43:22Speaker 3: they almost find him. But then Murzog is approached by
- 43:26Speaker 3: a very curious man. This man, as it turns out,
- 43:33Speaker 3: is the servant, is a servant of the castle's wearcat.
- 43:38Speaker 1: In the in the wake of the overthrow of in
- 43:46Speaker 1: the wake of the Varden's victory over Galbatorux. Uh they
- 43:51Speaker 1: had they had made an agreement with the wearcats of Alligasia.
- 43:57Speaker 3: AH quick recap. The cats are these race of shape shifters.
- 44:02Speaker 3: They can change from these from a like large cat
- 44:07Speaker 3: like breed. Just think of like oversized main coons.
- 44:11Speaker 1: All right. They look cute and.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Cuddly, but they're big and they have bigger murder murder mittens.
- 44:18Speaker 3: They look like micro They look like micro size sabertoothed tigers. Cute,
- 44:24Speaker 3: but they're vicious. But they're highly intelligent and they can
- 44:27Speaker 3: shape shift into uh into these kind of like they
- 44:34Speaker 3: look human, but they're no bigger than than the average
- 44:37Speaker 3: human child, so they kind of look like in their
- 44:39Speaker 3: human forms, they look like human like wild children. But
- 44:47Speaker 3: when they may when they had, when the were cats
- 44:49Speaker 3: had form a pact with the Varden to help fight
- 44:51Speaker 3: against galbators. A condition of their alliance was that in
- 44:54Speaker 3: the wake of when they defeat Galbatorus, a were cat
- 44:59Speaker 3: will be set up in all of the cat all
- 45:02Speaker 3: of the major cities. So every nobleman, like every nobleman
- 45:06Speaker 3: who serves the Queen, there will be a were cat
- 45:10Speaker 3: in her. There will always be a were cat in
- 45:11Speaker 3: their court. Now, so there's a were cat. There was
- 45:15Speaker 3: a were cat in Quenon, there's a were cat in Illyria,
- 45:18Speaker 3: and there's a were cat. And uh, there's a were
- 45:20Speaker 3: cat sitting in the court of Gilliat. This were cat
- 45:23Speaker 3: makes contact with Murtag. She figures out that Murtog was
- 45:29Speaker 3: in the city. She sends her her man servant to
- 45:31Speaker 3: get him, brings him into the keep through a secret tunnel,
- 45:34Speaker 3: and she tells him and she makes a proposition for him.
- 45:38Speaker 3: She will help him find the information he needs. And
- 45:40Speaker 3: she convinced him not to reach out to that merchant
- 45:43Speaker 3: family because in the end, that merchant family won't really
- 45:46Speaker 3: know who the Dreamers are and won't really tell him
- 45:50Speaker 3: anything and won't be able to really tell him anything.
- 45:53Speaker 1: About what's what the dreamers are doing. But she tells
- 45:57Speaker 1: she says she will tell She will tell him what
- 45:59Speaker 1: he wants to know, on one condition. He needs to
- 46:05Speaker 1: help her figure out what is happening to the wear
- 46:08Speaker 1: cat children in the city, because so far about three
- 46:14Speaker 1: or four were cat cubs had been taken. Oh, no,
- 46:19Speaker 1: nobody knows what happened to them. All they know is
- 46:23Speaker 1: these children had gone missing. And after and while they
- 46:26Speaker 1: had searched everywhere in this while the were cats searched
- 46:29Speaker 1: everywhere in the city, they could not find a single
- 46:31Speaker 1: one of them.
- 46:32Speaker 3: And while she doesn't tell Murtog this right away, but
- 46:35Speaker 3: the latest cub that had been taken was actually this
- 46:38Speaker 3: very were cat's daughter. So she tells Murtog that she
- 46:44Speaker 3: wants him to figure out what happened to the wear
- 46:47Speaker 3: cat children and if possible, rescue them. If you can't,
- 46:53Speaker 3: at least figure out who's doing this, so that way
- 46:55Speaker 3: the wear cats can take over and of course take
- 46:59Speaker 3: these bitches is down, bring the people who are doing
- 47:02Speaker 3: this to justice. Murtog is reluctant at first, but the
- 47:07Speaker 3: were cat makes him can manages to convince him because
- 47:14Speaker 3: she gives him a little bit of insight like and
- 47:17Speaker 3: tells him that wearcats would know more about the Dreamers. So, frustrated,
- 47:23Speaker 3: Murtag agrees, and the were cat reveals her plans. She
- 47:26Speaker 3: wants Murtog to join one of the first companies of Gilead,
- 47:31Speaker 3: but first, in order for him to join this first
- 47:34Speaker 3: the first company, he needs to prove himself. And the
- 47:36Speaker 3: way he can do this is by killing this monstrous
- 47:42Speaker 3: fish that I've been terrorizing the nearby lake of outside
- 47:48Speaker 3: of Gilead. So Murtok is frustrated because now he has
- 47:53Speaker 3: to go fishing for a demonic fish, and he has
- 47:57Speaker 3: to go all this extra mile just to take all
- 48:00Speaker 3: all these extra steps just to figure out what happened
- 48:02Speaker 3: to just to figure out who the Dreamers are and
- 48:04Speaker 3: what the hell they're doing. But he reluctantly agrees. He
- 48:08Speaker 3: sets out. He sets out to fulfill his mission. The workouts.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Manservant lets him out of the leads him back out
- 48:16Speaker 3: of the castle. He leaves the city and goes to
- 48:19Speaker 3: speak speak over with Uh speak over his plan with Thorn.
- 48:24Speaker 3: He does some more investigation in the city and he
- 48:27Speaker 3: learns from several local fishermen about the history of this
- 48:30Speaker 3: demonic fish. So this demonic fish he had an actual name,
