- 0:07Speaker 1: by Jeff Legwaald of ESPN dot com.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hello, Leggy Fallas.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Why do you come on to the show all smiling
- 0:15Speaker 3: like Mona Lisa? What do you what?
- 0:16Speaker 4: You's got something?
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm always ready, I'm always ready for the day.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Come on, I think you got something going on.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hey?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Are you honored to know?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Leggy?
- 0:28Speaker 1: At some point Nelly told me you are a participant
- 0:31Speaker 1: in our drop tournament.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Do you know that?
- 0:33Speaker 2: He just told me that? Yeah, yeah, does he know?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Have have you picked five teams?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Or no?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no, he's got a drop
- 0:44Speaker 1: in our tournament.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you're doing the radio thing.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I was gonna say, Jeff, all the years you've been
- 0:50Speaker 3: on this program, I don't think you've ever said anything stupid.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You got a really good track record, but that that
- 0:56Speaker 3: was a good one right there.
- 0:57Speaker 2: No, I've I've got plenty of stupid on my list.
- 1:00Speaker 4: I got I got stupid. Let me start this and
- 1:03Speaker 4: this is more of a media qualm than anything else.
- 1:08Speaker 4: These uh, these zoom press conferences are now being held
- 1:14Speaker 4: in sports especially you know the Broncos love doing them.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Oh yeah, no, no, I know I'm preaching to the
- 1:19Speaker 4: choir here, Jeff.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Yeah no, You're really gonna limit your Super Bowl chances
- 1:25Speaker 5: if you let a guy hold up.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I know, I listened.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I listened to the Wattle one, and I think Wattle
- 1:31Speaker 4: is great and tremendous. But doing these these zoom press
- 1:34Speaker 4: conferences is the biggest waste of time and the biggest
- 1:37Speaker 4: joke and the biggest affront to what we try to
- 1:41Speaker 4: do in this business. And the fact that these continue
- 1:44Speaker 4: is I don't know what to say. I I don't
- 1:46Speaker 4: participate in them because they're dumb. They're dumb. There's I mean,
- 1:50Speaker 4: I what what is your Have you talked to anybody
- 1:53Speaker 4: about this?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Why do we still do this?
- 1:56Speaker 5: I've talked more than anyone else, and in the local bar.
- 2:01Speaker 5: This is one of my my hills.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I will charge up every time.
- 2:07Speaker 5: So but yeah, they it's more of a a Sean
- 2:11Speaker 5: Payton result of he he likes doing it. He doesn't
- 2:16Speaker 5: want to do in person on Mondays, so he does
- 2:19Speaker 5: it that way. So that's how they do uh. And
- 2:22Speaker 5: the only reason they did waddle is because it was
- 2:24Speaker 5: a trade. It was significant, and people were going bananas
- 2:28Speaker 5: to get something. I mean, hey, they haven't done anything
- 2:32Speaker 5: with a free agent they've signed in the Sean Payton era.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I remember.
- 2:37Speaker 5: I mean Mike McGlinchey told me he had bought a
- 2:39Speaker 5: suit for the press.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Confidence that never was so uh so there you go.
- 2:46Speaker 5: I mean, I I don't get it, but that's you know,
- 2:49Speaker 5: they don't really ask me my opinion.
- 2:53Speaker 2: There.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Yeah, but I'm telling you, I'm telling you it matters.
- 2:59Speaker 4: It matters you may.
- 3:02Speaker 5: I will say the players would prefer a moment sure
- 3:06Speaker 5: when they sign or are traded, when they arrive. I mean,
- 3:09Speaker 5: that's a that's a great let's be your best moment,
- 3:13Speaker 5: other than like if you win a super Bowl with
- 3:15Speaker 5: a team. I mean, that's a that's a big moment.
- 3:19Speaker 5: A lot of guys are just signing their first real
- 3:23Speaker 5: mega deal. Why not celebrate that. Let him bring his
- 3:27Speaker 5: family and sit in the front row and take pictures
- 3:30Speaker 5: and take a tour of the facility and all those things.
- 3:34Speaker 5: But you know, again, I'm just one guy, but I
- 3:38Speaker 5: I fight for it all the time. I prefer in person.
- 3:40Speaker 5: I don't think anything should be zoom. But you know
- 3:45Speaker 5: I text with one finger too, so I'm not exactly
- 3:48Speaker 5: a techno marble.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald joining us on the Ramasla hot line and
- 3:53Speaker 1: all conversations with Leggie I brought to you by the
- 3:56Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers iv E W Local sixty eight.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Start with a job and with a career.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So to the Wattle acquisition we've talked about on this show,
- 4:07Speaker 1: like what do you define as a number one wide
- 4:09Speaker 1: receiver and what entails that and all that stuff, like
- 4:12Speaker 1: when it comes to Waddle in Sutton, the nice thing
- 4:15Speaker 1: is they're two completely different wide outs with different skill
- 4:18Speaker 1: sets that you have to worry about, but ideally seventeen
- 4:23Speaker 1: games he stays healthy. What do you think the target
- 4:27Speaker 1: number looks like for Jalen Waddell? Does he get six
- 4:30Speaker 1: a game? What do you see in the distribution between
- 4:34Speaker 1: the White Outs now and specifically him in Sutton.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Well, I mean, he played a different offense in Miami
- 4:40Speaker 5: for a little different but they ran the ball a
- 4:43Speaker 5: lot in that offense, and for several of the years
- 4:48Speaker 5: he had Tyreek Hill in the lineup, and his lowest
- 4:52Speaker 5: target total in Miami.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Was eighty three.
- 4:54Speaker 5: So that's his lowest, and I think he was at
- 4:58Speaker 5: least one hundred in every other season. So he's a
- 5:03Speaker 5: high volume player. It's just you know, how often are
- 5:05Speaker 5: the Broncos gonna throw the ball where? You know where's
- 5:08Speaker 5: it going to go. I don't think you worry about
- 5:10Speaker 5: the targets more than what it does. You know, if
- 5:14Speaker 5: he's not getting the ball, he's this guy will still
- 5:17Speaker 5: impact every single thing a defense does on a pass play.
- 5:22Speaker 5: You can't push Cortland to the boundary anymore and just
- 5:26Speaker 5: gang up on him. I mean, look at Sutton's targets
- 5:29Speaker 5: the last two games of the regular season and in
- 5:31Speaker 5: the playoffs. Uh, you know people were punishing the Broncos
- 5:36Speaker 5: because they didn't have options to go away from him.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's not the case.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Now, you know this is a this is a high
- 5:44Speaker 5: volume player with it with who is a high end
- 5:47Speaker 5: route runner, Like he doesn't have a route where a
- 5:51Speaker 5: defense can say he doesn't do that as well as
- 5:53Speaker 5: he does the other three. Now, this is a high
- 5:56Speaker 5: end route runner, very meticulous. He's in the right spot.
- 6:01Speaker 5: It will take about a third of a practice for
- 6:05Speaker 5: bow Knicks to realize he can be confident putting the
- 6:08Speaker 5: ball toward him on any route, because he's gonna be
- 6:12Speaker 5: where Bo expects.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Him to be.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Well, if you look at those number of targets around
- 6:16Speaker 3: these parts the last decade, I'll get you a statue
- 6:19Speaker 3: in front of the dang stadium.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I mean that would be that would be awesome.
- 6:23Speaker 3: That being said, they still have some work to do
- 6:25Speaker 3: and I know that you've been on the tight ends
- 6:27Speaker 3: for quite some time. Is that solvable in the draft
- 6:31Speaker 3: at all? And do they have another move coming their way?
- 6:35Speaker 5: Well, another move will take some you know, they're they're
- 6:39Speaker 5: kind of squished against the salary cap a little bit. Uh,
- 6:43Speaker 5: they're trying to position for next year and all those things.
- 6:46Speaker 2: So a move would require some some bookkeeping.
- 6:51Speaker 5: And I'm not sure there's a player at that position
- 6:55Speaker 5: I would think is worthy of a significant move, especially
- 7:00Speaker 5: surrendering draft picks. I mean, they went from nine picks
- 7:03Speaker 5: to seven and the Wattle deal, so I don't I
- 7:07Speaker 5: don't think you want to go much lower than that.
- 7:09Speaker 5: When now you have a roster full of large signed
- 7:15Speaker 5: extensions and bo Nix's contract is coming at some point,
- 7:20Speaker 5: you're gonna need a lot of draft picks and a
- 7:23Speaker 5: lot of young players coming in or you're gonna have
- 7:26Speaker 5: a big salary cap problem. So I think any deals
- 7:31Speaker 5: that require them to surrender picks are not a.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Great idea for them right now.
- 7:37Speaker 5: And there are tight ends in the draft they can
- 7:41Speaker 5: find and have some immediate impact as a receiver, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 5: that huge impact. You might have to move up in
- 7:50Speaker 5: the second round to find a little of that. But
- 7:54Speaker 5: one of the reasons sort of the the draft pick
- 7:57Speaker 5: total the Dolphins gotten the Wattle deal was higher than
- 8:01Speaker 5: a lot of people in the league thought was okay,
- 8:05Speaker 5: was the Broncos did not want to surrender any twenty
- 8:08Speaker 5: twenty seven picks. They have a lot of picks in
- 8:10Speaker 5: that draft and right now, I mean, anything can change,
- 8:14Speaker 5: but right now that draft projects to be pretty awesome
- 8:18Speaker 5: days one through three. So that was some of the reasons,
- 8:22Speaker 5: and they gave up a little more this year on
- 8:25Speaker 5: the board to get Wattle.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Can I ask you about the future of Marvin Mims.
- 8:29Speaker 4: What does this mean to Mims? Because I don't understand
- 8:33Speaker 4: why Mims wasn't embraced more in this offense because he's
- 8:36Speaker 4: the same size as Wattle. I understand he's not as.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Proven as Wattle.
- 8:42Speaker 4: I get it, but we've seen him on the field
- 8:45Speaker 4: in key situations and he thrives. What do you do
- 8:48Speaker 4: with him?
- 8:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I'd surely like to see Mems with one hundred targets
- 8:52Speaker 5: and see what that looks like. Yeah, you know, we
- 8:54Speaker 5: may be talking about the same numbers. Frankly, I you know,
- 8:59Speaker 5: people can disagree with my draft evaluation, but I have
- 9:03Speaker 5: thought Marvin Mims was an impact player from the moment
- 9:06Speaker 5: he walked in, and it's been one of the biggest
- 9:10Speaker 5: I've had a lot of questions over the years in
- 9:13Speaker 5: my time as a beat writer, but why Mims can't
- 9:17Speaker 5: break through is one of the biggest I've ever had
- 9:19Speaker 5: here in terms of personnel usage.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Is it blocking?
- 9:24Speaker 5: You know, I've asked everybody. I've never gotten an answer
- 9:27Speaker 5: that's really says it all. I don't get it. I
- 9:32Speaker 5: probably will never get it. But this, I think this
- 9:35Speaker 5: impacts his snaps the most. I'm going to be intrigued
- 9:38Speaker 5: to see how they do this. I mean, you know
- 9:42Speaker 5: they made this move. This is kind of you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: button your button heads with yourself on this. They've used
- 9:52Speaker 5: four draft picks in the last three drafts on wide
- 9:56Speaker 5: receivers and then they make their most significant trades Russell
- 10:00Speaker 5: Wilson on a wide receiver. So now you've done both things.
- 10:04Speaker 5: You invest a huge in the draft and you've made
- 10:08Speaker 5: a significant trade at the position. So uh, they're either
- 10:12Speaker 5: saying they didn't get it right, or didn't get enough,
- 10:15Speaker 5: or should have drafted you know more. I don't know,
- 10:19Speaker 5: but they are sort of, you know, stacking on top
- 10:24Speaker 5: of themselves and they're the young players they picked in
- 10:27Speaker 5: the draft are are going to have their snaps cut
- 10:30Speaker 5: because Jayalen Watnell's gonna play and he's gonna.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Play a lot.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Just to follow up on that, you know, when you
- 10:37Speaker 1: make a move like this, this is pushing your chips
- 10:39Speaker 1: to the middle of the table. Was this something in
- 10:43Speaker 1: your estimation that you know? We talked to Luca Evans
- 10:46Speaker 1: at the Post yesterday and he had an article where
- 10:49Speaker 1: he heard that the Broncos had a hard cap on
- 10:52Speaker 1: numbers for guys in free agency. It was ten million
- 10:55Speaker 1: dollars a year for a running back. They were not
- 10:57Speaker 1: willing to go higher. It was six million a year
- 11:00Speaker 1: for a tight end. They were not willing to go higher.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Is that because they knew something like this was going
- 11:05Speaker 1: to happen? Do you think is that why no, okay.
- 11:08Speaker 5: No, that that's their numbers. They approached the draft the
- 11:13Speaker 5: same way. There's a height, weight speed parameter on all
- 11:17Speaker 5: positions on their draft board.
- 11:20Speaker 2: That's UH.
- 11:21Speaker 5: They will divert from in rare cases, but for the
- 11:26Speaker 5: most part, they live by the metrics they've studied. And
- 11:30Speaker 5: they didn't just pick those numbers. Those are They've got
- 11:33Speaker 5: a pretty high end analytics department that has looked at
- 11:39Speaker 5: decades worth of information about how much you should pay
- 11:42Speaker 5: each position compared to the output you get. Again there
- 11:47Speaker 5: they would always be an outlier. But that's why they
- 11:49Speaker 5: got out of the Uh. The Shane Travis, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 5: we called them atn for years until they finally told
- 11:56Speaker 5: people how to say his name. But that's why they
- 11:59Speaker 5: got out of that bidding. It went beyond that they
- 12:02Speaker 5: were out, they exited the process.
- 12:07Speaker 4: I just got worded by the way we're talking about
- 12:09Speaker 4: Marvin Mims and I can't wait to talk to him.
- 12:11Speaker 4: He will be our pregame host prior to the Nuggets
- 12:14Speaker 4: game Sunday at ball Arena. Cool and Uh, I'm interested
- 12:19Speaker 4: in hearing from him what he thinks about his future
- 12:21Speaker 4: in Denver because if I'm I'm like.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I mean, if it's up to the Broncos, they want
- 12:28Speaker 5: the best returner in football on their on their team.
- 12:32Speaker 5: But I you know, I like Marvin and I again
- 12:36Speaker 5: I I I would like to see one season where
- 12:39Speaker 5: Marvin Mims gets a hundred targets and let's see what
- 12:42Speaker 5: that looks like. But you're not going to see that here.
- 12:44Speaker 5: But frankly, honestly, the best offenses don't spend a lot
- 12:49Speaker 5: of time with that discussion. The best teams don't spend
- 12:53Speaker 5: a lot of time. I mean, the Bengals have Joe Burrow,
- 12:57Speaker 5: T Higgins and Jamar Chase and I always here how
- 13:00Speaker 5: awesome it would be to have those three guys, but
- 13:03Speaker 5: we don't see him in the playoffs because they constructed
- 13:07Speaker 5: their team, uh improperly.
- 13:10Speaker 2: And you know, Marvin.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Mims will be on a very good team with the
- 13:14Speaker 5: Broncos and they're gonna need him at some point in
- 13:18Speaker 5: the season. But this does impact him, It impacts Pat Bryant,
- 13:22Speaker 5: and it impacts Troy Franklin. But they're gonna run. You know,
- 13:27Speaker 5: they were one already one of the high use teams
- 13:30Speaker 5: for three wide last year, and this will only.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Up the.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Better team today.
- 13:35Speaker 2: No, that's what I mean.
- 13:36Speaker 5: You know, the good teams, the good the really good
- 13:40Speaker 5: teams don't worry about who's w R one and who's
- 13:44Speaker 5: getting the targets. That's just not a discussion on the
- 13:47Speaker 5: good teams. And I I you know, it could be
- 13:51Speaker 5: old thinking, like go paint your cave leg Waald, but uh,
- 13:56Speaker 5: I think when you're spending a lot of time talking
- 13:59Speaker 5: about a team and you're talking about who's getting targets
- 14:02Speaker 5: and who's getting carried, that's fantasy football stuff. But the
- 14:06Speaker 5: good teams internally don't really worry about that. They worry
- 14:11Speaker 5: about when you get the ball, produce, when you're on
- 14:15Speaker 5: the field, produce, That's what they worry about.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Just quickly, here, Travis Etien's name is actually a chan Chane.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Do you think that a chan from Miami's name is
- 14:27Speaker 1: actually etn.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe that might be worth it might be worth
- 14:32Speaker 5: checking out. But this hits hold with me because I
- 14:37Speaker 5: always ask guys many times how to say it, how
- 14:41Speaker 5: to spell it. It's one of my big things because
- 14:43Speaker 5: I just remember when I first started, if you messed
- 14:47Speaker 5: up a kid's name and a high school football story,
- 14:51Speaker 5: you just the family never forgot it. So I mean,
- 14:54Speaker 5: you just it always became the biggest thing to me.
- 14:58Speaker 5: And it's amazing to me that he said he kept
- 15:02Speaker 5: correcting people at Clemson and they just gave up, like
- 15:08Speaker 5: all right, And I just can't imagine that you let
- 15:10Speaker 5: somebody people this pronounce your name for years because you
- 15:15Speaker 5: just got sick of telling them the right way.
- 15:18Speaker 4: And Jeff, we called Brett greg for the first two.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Weeks you did that.
- 15:22Speaker 4: You did.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So you've called me a lot of things.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Lay Because you're featured in this drop tournament, in this
- 15:30Speaker 1: matchups coming up? Do you want to stick around and
- 15:32Speaker 1: hear your opponent in this?
- 15:34Speaker 3: No?
- 15:34Speaker 5: I you know, I I just still the week. I
- 15:37Speaker 5: don't worry about my opponents. I worry about myself. Nobody
- 15:40Speaker 5: is a bigger critic than I am.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Uh, well, you're gonna you're gonna hear this match up live.
- 15:46Speaker 5: I tell you that I take it one day at
- 15:48Speaker 5: a time. I rise and grind. Uh I do I
- 15:52Speaker 5: do a lot of these A lot of these things.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Oh No, I keep I'm where my feet are? I
- 15:58Speaker 2: uh I got.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, good talk. No, Patrick Cave like, well, yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you know what I just found. He told me he's
- 16:06Speaker 1: not gonna be able to hear this anyway, so like,
- 16:08Speaker 1: we'll let you know the results towards.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I just you know, I pursue victory to pursue victory. Yes,
- 16:15Speaker 2: but you're the best fifty next week, Thanks fellas. S.
