- 0:00Speaker 1: It's back. It's one more thing. I'm strong and Geddi
- 0:04Speaker 1: one more.
- 0:09Speaker 2: That's a rather light intro.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Do you remember nine to eleven?
- 0:13Speaker 2: I don't approve, yes, I remember nine to eleven.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Do you remember nineteen seventy nine in Iran? In the
- 0:23Speaker 1: hostages and a whole bunch of other things in between.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Fundamentalist violent Islamists are back and they are feistier than ever.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So we got this story out of Russia that happened
- 0:40Speaker 1: over the weekend. If you haven't heard this.
- 0:43Speaker 3: This was a serious coordinated terror attack in Dagistan in
- 0:47Speaker 3: southern Russia. Multiple heavily armed gunman appeared to have simultaneously
- 0:51Speaker 3: attacked two churches and two synagogues in the regional capital,
- 0:55Speaker 3: Mahtchkela and in another city's events a synagogue also Inflames
- 0:59Speaker 3: authority we say at least nine people were killed, seven
- 1:02Speaker 3: of them police officers, as well as an Orthodox priest,
- 1:05Speaker 3: and another dozen police officers also injured.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Now police say they have now killed at least six attackers.
- 1:10Speaker 3: This is one of the biggest attacks in years, and
- 1:12Speaker 3: it will be raising questions whether Russia's security forces are
- 1:15Speaker 3: overstretched by the war in Ukraine.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Fundamentalist Islamic nutjobs open fire on a church, a synagogue,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and a police checkpoint in two cities in the southern province,
- 1:28Speaker 1: killed more than nineteen police officers and several civilians along
- 1:33Speaker 1: with an Orthodox priest. Russia's predominantly Muslim and southernmost province
- 1:38Speaker 1: has been the site of many Islamist attacks.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm far from an expert on Dagistan, good Lord,
- 1:48Speaker 2: but the whole Islamic group attacks, I think there are
- 1:55Speaker 2: three brands of it. Number One, Islamist groups that are
- 1:59Speaker 2: trying to bring about the caliphate and the glory of
- 2:02Speaker 2: the prophet and just kill people to take over to
- 2:05Speaker 2: spread Islam. Then you've got the armed thug gangs who
- 2:11Speaker 2: use Islam as kind of a hook and a recruiting tool.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And then you've got the situation where and you've seen
- 2:19Speaker 2: this a fair mountain Chechhnia and Dagystan, other places in
- 2:22Speaker 2: the southern part of the Soviet Union now Russia where
- 2:25Speaker 2: they're kind of political separatist movements that also have an
- 2:29Speaker 2: Islamic flare to them. They're really resentful that an atheist
- 2:33Speaker 2: like Putin makes them dance to his tune. So Islam
- 2:38Speaker 2: is mixed in there. But it's kind of a different
- 2:39Speaker 2: degree anyway.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Well, like, where do you put a Ran in Hamas?
- 2:42Speaker 1: I mean, they are do they believe what they're saying
- 2:46Speaker 1: that the Jews need to die and Israel needs to go.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But they're they're getting you know, the leadership in Hamas,
- 2:51Speaker 1: they're getting awful rich off of this.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah there is oh, yeah, that's true. But the people
- 2:57Speaker 2: who do the killing, the rank and file, I believe
- 2:59Speaker 2: there's yeah, plenty of vehement Islamism going on in that.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah. I just wonder if the guys in the hotels
- 3:05Speaker 1: in Dubai believe any of that stuff or care. They
- 3:09Speaker 1: just like living in five star hotels and riding around
- 3:11Speaker 1: the Mercedes.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's an interesting question. I don't know.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't know either. But then this story that came
- 3:17Speaker 1: out over the weekend, and this is troubling. This deserves
- 3:20Speaker 1: way more attention. Mike Morell, former number two at the CIA,
- 3:26Speaker 1: guy I've had a lot of trouble with over the
- 3:28Speaker 1: many years he was in the Clinton administration. Goes that
- 3:31Speaker 1: far back. He's one of the former spooks who signed
- 3:38Speaker 1: that letter saying the Hunter Biden laptop has all the
- 3:42Speaker 1: hallmarks of Russian disinformation. So he's that kind of guy,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and he's never apologized for it. But he's also, over
- 3:49Speaker 1: the many years, as I've watched him on so many
- 3:51Speaker 1: different shows, often had some damned interesting information that ran
- 3:55Speaker 1: counter to sometimes his side's beliefs. Anyway, he was talking
- 4:01Speaker 1: about this video that I forget how it got on Earthed.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Maybe he mentions this in the clip videos out of
- 4:07Speaker 1: a Saudi obviously casing sites in DC for the nine
- 4:13Speaker 1: to eleven attack. Let's listen to listen to Mike Morrell
- 4:16Speaker 1: on Face the Nation.
- 4:18Speaker 4: No doubt in my mind that it is a casing video,
- 4:21Speaker 4: that it is a casing video for some sort of
- 4:24Speaker 4: terrorist attack. Number one, number two. Pretty clear to me
- 4:30Speaker 4: that al Bayoumi was was either working for al Qaeda
- 4:35Speaker 4: or was al Qaeda. Did he know about the nine
- 4:38Speaker 4: to eleven attacks? Probably not. Did he know that the
- 4:43Speaker 4: two individuals he was interacting with were nine to eleven hijackers?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Probably not.
- 4:48Speaker 4: But no doubt in my mind that al Qaeda tasked
- 4:52Speaker 4: him to do this casing video.
- 4:54Speaker 1: This, well, I'll let I'll let Morell do this. Main
- 4:56Speaker 1: thing he doesn't mention, Narre, I'll fill in. Here's more.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The video is billing.
- 5:00Speaker 4: It's chilling in terms of what he was, what he
- 5:05Speaker 4: was videotaping, his narration over the top of it, which
- 5:10Speaker 4: which is part what tells you was a casing video,
- 5:13Speaker 4: and his his his extremist comments. Let me just give
- 5:17Speaker 4: you two examples, Margaret on on the casing part. At
- 5:20Speaker 4: one point he says, I will get over he's looking
- 5:22Speaker 4: at the Washington Monument. I will get over there and
- 5:25Speaker 4: I will report. I will report to you in detail.
- 5:28Speaker 1: What is there.
- 5:29Speaker 4: He's talking to somebody, right, he's and and he talks
- 5:32Speaker 4: about a pelis not like a tourist video. And then
- 5:35Speaker 4: in terms of the extremism he's he's he's looking at
- 5:38Speaker 4: the Capitol and he says, they say that our kids
- 5:41Speaker 4: are demons. However, these are the demons what he's looking at.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So that guy believes it. He believes the Islamic fundamentalist
- 5:52Speaker 1: job stuff there. Obviously, so was he. So he's a
- 5:55Speaker 1: Saudi and he now lives in Saudi Arabia. The brill
- 5:59Speaker 1: the Bridge had this video of him case in the place,
- 6:05Speaker 1: gave it to the FBI, and then it just disappeared
- 6:07Speaker 1: in the inner works of the FBI. Was that a
- 6:11Speaker 1: we didn't want it a really you know, that uncomfortable
- 6:13Speaker 1: thing that happened in the beginning when it turned out, hey,
- 6:16Speaker 1: all these hijackers are from Saudi Arabia, are like eighteen
- 6:18Speaker 1: of the twenty one or whatever, and we you know
- 6:21Speaker 1: out Sada Arabia's a friend of ours. So did we
- 6:24Speaker 1: just let that get lost in the FBI bureaucracy so
- 6:29Speaker 1: that we wouldn't have another layer of this is uncomfortable?
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I think everything you've said is one hundred percent true.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Starting with the Bush administration, they said, look, the Saudis
- 6:38Speaker 2: are a strategic partner in the Middle East for a
- 6:41Speaker 2: variety of goals. These were dissidents that they were way
- 6:44Speaker 2: too easy on, mostly even though some of the quote
- 6:47Speaker 2: unquote dissidents were awfully close to the halls of power.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'm sure there were behind the scenes assurances from the
- 6:56Speaker 2: Saudis that this s ends now, but do not embarrass it,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and the Bush administration subsequent administrations agreed.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So Morell doesn't believe this guy knew the guys that
- 7:08Speaker 1: he was helping were hijackers or anything about the nine
- 7:11Speaker 1: to eleven plot. So was he part of a completely
- 7:15Speaker 1: separate plot with some other people that was planned, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: after nine to eleven happened, for whatever reason, they canceled
- 7:23Speaker 1: it or got him out of here.
- 7:25Speaker 2: No, I would guess it's kind of violent revolutionary cell
- 7:28Speaker 2: one oh one. He is tasked with a very specific task,
- 7:32Speaker 2: with no information why he's doing it or what it's
- 7:35Speaker 2: going to lead to, or the names of anybody else
- 7:38Speaker 2: or whatever. He segment everything so put it in micro
- 7:42Speaker 2: cells so nobody can report on anybody else.
- 7:44Speaker 1: O way, what a weird relationship we have with Saudi Arabia,
- 7:47Speaker 1: of course, what a weird relationship that MBS has with
- 7:52Speaker 1: the craziest people in his country.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's and a lot of us learn this
- 7:58Speaker 2: in the wake of nine to eleven, especially, But he
- 8:00Speaker 2: lets the fundamentalists operate in the hinter lands more or
- 8:03Speaker 2: less unmolested. In return, they won't attack the regime.
- 8:08Speaker 1: If you have any interest in that, read The Looming
- 8:10Speaker 1: Tower by Lawrence Wright. Fascinating it is, indeed.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, there's so many great books I've got piled
- 8:19Speaker 2: up to read. I don't spend hardly any time reading books,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and I really need to, including audio books. I've got
- 8:26Speaker 2: a stack, and then I've got a stack of books.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I really ought to reread.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Audiobooks are the greatest thing. Accessibility to affordable audio books
- 8:35Speaker 1: is the greatest thing that's happened to my reading in
- 8:37Speaker 1: a long time. Love it, Love it, Love it because
- 8:42Speaker 1: it's a lot easier for me to listen to a
- 8:45Speaker 1: book while I'm walking the dog, doing the dishes, running
- 8:49Speaker 1: to pick up the kids from football practice, all that
- 8:51Speaker 1: sort of stuff, then sit there with a book in
- 8:53Speaker 1: my hands and actually look at the words. Come on
- 8:56Speaker 1: a quantum mechanics kick right now? With a book? Oh wow,
- 9:00Speaker 1: so damned interesting. I finally came across one that explains
- 9:03Speaker 1: it in a way I think I understand it. Well,
- 9:05Speaker 1: actually I don't understand it. That's a famous quote from
- 9:09Speaker 1: which of the famous physicists that was involved in discovering
- 9:12Speaker 1: all this thing, Neil's boor maybe him. But anybody who
- 9:16Speaker 1: says they understand quantum mechanics doesn't understand quantum mechanics, and
- 9:20Speaker 1: he invented it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: How many me mechanics does it take to fix a
- 9:24Speaker 2: quantum huh?
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah? Anyway, as I learned more about that, I'll try
- 9:28Speaker 1: to present that an understandable way.
- 9:31Speaker 2: But I do love How do you think it'll compare
- 9:33Speaker 2: to your presentations on say cryptocurrency, Oh.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Way way better, way way better. I still don't understand
- 9:38Speaker 1: cryptocurrency at all and really have not much interest in learning,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but yeah, way better on quantum mechanics.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, good for you. I've always been so completely mystified
- 9:48Speaker 2: by that stuff. I figure, ah, I got limited bandwidth.
- 9:51Speaker 2: I'll focus on other things.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Well. Fineman, the other physicist from the Oppenheimer movie, he
- 9:59Speaker 1: famously said he is the father of the leading edge
- 10:03Speaker 1: of quantum mechanics. When he died, he said, nobody understands
- 10:07Speaker 1: quantum mechanics. So the people that discovered this stuff and
- 10:10Speaker 1: wrote about it say, it's impossible to understand.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Well, what would be your one to three sentence description
- 10:16Speaker 2: of what is quantum mechanics?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Well, first of all, they just think that it's provable,
- 10:21Speaker 1: that exit that it exists, but trying to understand the
- 10:24Speaker 1: why and what of it and everything like that. When
- 10:26Speaker 1: you get inside an atom. They still teach us to
- 10:32Speaker 1: this day that the atom is basically like its own
- 10:35Speaker 1: little solar system, and you got the you know, the
- 10:37Speaker 1: planet that is the nucleus, and the electrons going around
- 10:40Speaker 1: like the planets and everything like that. But the quantum
- 10:42Speaker 1: mechanics theory is it's not like that at all. And
- 10:45Speaker 1: these things operate in ways that defy everything we know
- 10:49Speaker 1: about physics in the universe. They defy gravity, they defy
- 10:52Speaker 1: time and space. They disappear and show up there without
- 10:55Speaker 1: any way of figuring it out. How it's it's just
- 10:58Speaker 1: it's a breakdown and everything everybody believes about physics.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And what about neutrons, Why won't they take a position cowardice?
- 11:05Speaker 1: That's why, and that's why Einstein didn't didn't like it,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and was he argued so forcefully against it was Look
- 11:12Speaker 1: until you can come up with like a mathematical formula
- 11:15Speaker 1: that explains this, then what are we doing here but
- 11:19Speaker 1: the other And he seems to have lost the day.
- 11:21Speaker 1: The people that have won the day over the years,
- 11:23Speaker 1: Fineman and Neil's Bourne those is just no, it's it.
- 11:26Speaker 1: We can see it. We have microscopes at this point.
- 11:29Speaker 1: We can we can see that. But they defy the
- 11:32Speaker 1: laws that Newton came up with of all those things
- 11:35Speaker 1: I just mentioned, And what the hell does that mean
- 11:38Speaker 1: about the world if there's something going on.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Neil's Borr renamed himself Neil Boortz and started pushing the
- 11:44Speaker 2: flat tax if I recall properly.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But if if if at the smallest level, things don't
- 11:50Speaker 1: behave following any of the laws of nature, what does
- 11:55Speaker 1: that mean? Some people think that is is the the
- 12:00Speaker 1: proof that, okay, there is something like God and the
- 12:04Speaker 1: whole nother world that we can't see in all these
- 12:06Speaker 1: different things. Some people say it's not.
- 12:09Speaker 2: To quote the great physicist Don Henley, thinking of myself,
- 12:13Speaker 2: she just looked at me uncomprehendingly, like a cow at
- 12:15Speaker 2: a passing train. That's how I get when you're talking
- 12:18Speaker 2: about quantum physics. I've always loved that line.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I'm currently listening to an audiobook on why CB radio failed.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Well, why, good buddy, why, I guess that's it.
