- 1:47Speaker 3: Hey Steve, why did the British cross the Atlantic?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:51Speaker 3: No, man, tell me to get to the other side.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Welcome back to Beyond the Blood. That's quite the intro,
- 2:01Speaker 3: So welcome back to uh Beyond the Blood staff picks.
- 2:05Speaker 3: This is the show where we we don't have a
- 2:07Speaker 3: commentary to dive into, though this movie does have a
- 2:10Speaker 3: commentary track. Maybe we'll get into that another day. Uh.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And it says our fourth of July special that we've
- 2:17Speaker 3: never done before and it was just convenient that it
- 2:20Speaker 3: was fourth of July week and we had to record something,
- 2:22Speaker 3: so here you go.
- 2:26Speaker 4: I couldn't have picked a better film to cover on
- 2:29Speaker 4: the Fourth of July. I felt like that this was
- 2:31Speaker 4: just meant to be.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I think we should have covered Independence Day Resurgence.
- 2:36Speaker 4: No, I'm okay.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Are you a big Fourth of July guy? Like you
- 2:43Speaker 3: down some down some glizzies.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I was down for the Fourth of July discussion until.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You said that you don't like you don't like hot thugs.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I just don't calm that. But I just like I
- 2:57Speaker 4: was trying to be cool, very trendy. Yeah, No, I
- 3:01Speaker 4: definitely like Fourth July. I mean, I think my favorite
- 3:06Speaker 4: times that I can recall are either going out on
- 3:09Speaker 4: the boat, barbecuing, watching fireworks. Honestly, anytime I can get
- 3:15Speaker 4: an opportunity to get out in the water, man, I'm
- 3:17Speaker 4: all for it. So what about for you? Yeah, I was.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I mean, we used to we used to do fireworks
- 3:24Speaker 3: and even still now this day. Like, I love watching fireworks,
- 3:29Speaker 3: so I always get excited about that. And I'm a big,
- 3:33Speaker 3: big hot dog guy, so I get.
- 3:34Speaker 4: To enjoy you know some Is that why you're bringing
- 3:37Speaker 4: it up?
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, I mean I just just to smooth the transition.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I don't I don't think a week goes by. I
- 3:46Speaker 3: don't enjoy a I don't enjoy at least at least
- 3:50Speaker 3: a while. Wa hot dog.
- 3:51Speaker 4: You know you guys heard it here first, hot dog
- 3:55Speaker 4: affection ado.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Hot dogs have been trending over the last couple of years.
- 3:59Speaker 3: There's been a resurgence.
- 4:01Speaker 4: From who from who? Nobody said that mean.
- 4:04Speaker 3: People talk about hot dogs. Look, dude, there's a couple
- 4:08Speaker 3: of things that twenty twenty six have brought the light
- 4:10Speaker 3: right like people were people were smoking darts again, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: people were eating hot dogs. You heard it?
- 4:17Speaker 4: Not the same thing, It's not even close even in the
- 4:21Speaker 4: same strasphere do.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You do it together?
- 4:23Speaker 4: Man?
- 4:24Speaker 3: It's the guys that stand outside of wah wah and
- 4:26Speaker 3: smoke cigarettes that eat wah wah hot dogs. And I
- 4:28Speaker 3: know this for a fact because when I pull up
- 4:30Speaker 3: the wah Wah if it's any time between eleven AM
- 4:33Speaker 3: and one pm, all the blue collar guys are there
- 4:36Speaker 3: because they can't their trucks don't fit in parking spots,
- 4:40Speaker 3: so they're all around the perimeter of the parking lot.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Seven of them are surrounding a wah wah trash can.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And I know for a fact that there's gonna be
- 4:47Speaker 3: no hot.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Dogs survival Denis Man.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I just know they I have to get there either
- 4:55Speaker 3: before them or after them, and I don't know. Yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 3: it happens.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Okay, So let me ask you what's a wah wah
- 5:03Speaker 4: oh ship?
- 5:04Speaker 3: I forgot that. You don't have a wat uh? What's
- 5:06Speaker 3: a what?
- 5:07Speaker 4: What?
- 5:07Speaker 3: What's your local? What's your local? Like gas station? We
- 5:12Speaker 3: have seven elevens Okay, So it's it's it's like a
- 5:15Speaker 3: seven eleven, except more sheets.
- 5:18Speaker 4: We have sheets, right, it's at.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Okay, it's more related to a shop. Yeah, it's more.
- 5:23Speaker 3: It's like a sheet, except better. So there's two different
- 5:27Speaker 3: types of wah wahs. They're the old wah wahs were
- 5:31Speaker 3: little right there, small so there's no gas station attached
- 5:34Speaker 3: to that. And then now there's the big wah wahs
- 5:38Speaker 3: and there they have gas stations and they're giant, you know.
- 5:41Speaker 3: And since the evolution from the small to the big
- 5:44Speaker 3: they've they have, the food quality has diminished incredibly.
- 5:48Speaker 4: It got worse.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it got worse, Yeah, got worse. The more money
- 5:53Speaker 3: they make, the worser food gets. And what happened was
- 5:58Speaker 3: and I'll tell you what happened here. Uh, it's when
- 6:00Speaker 3: they started making their own roles. That was a downfall.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I think that was the worst thing they could have done.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Well.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And you can't buy deli meat there anymore.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Even though from a gas station.
- 6:17Speaker 3: From from wah wah gas stations. Wawas evolved into gas stations,
- 6:23Speaker 3: but originally they were just delis.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Oh oh, they're like food markets, right.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like you could go in and get you
- 6:37Speaker 3: could get rolls, you can get deli meat, you could
- 6:40Speaker 3: get chips. You know, you can get a soda.
- 6:43Speaker 4: This makes way more sense now, Okay.
- 6:46Speaker 3: They evolved and they started having griddles and and they
- 6:51Speaker 3: would make like chicken sandwiches. And then at some point
- 6:56Speaker 3: they started doing super wah wahs they were called, and
- 7:00Speaker 3: it was like a gas station attached to a wah wah.
- 7:05Speaker 3: And at some point in this evolutionary progress, they they
- 7:13Speaker 3: they started making their own roles instead of getting what
- 7:15Speaker 3: I believe was Lyssio's roles, which is a New Jersey
- 7:20Speaker 3: role manufacturer, and it all went downhill from there. Now
- 7:24Speaker 3: they have pizza and cheeseburgers and yeah, it's a gas station.
- 7:29Speaker 4: So at what level does a wah wah evolve into
- 7:31Speaker 4: a super wah wah.
- 7:34Speaker 3: It's usually when I don't know at some point they
- 7:37Speaker 3: just started. There's only a few small wa wahs left.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And fun fact, the wah wah that I frequent right
- 7:43Speaker 3: near our apartment is the one thousandth wa It actually
- 7:48Speaker 3: says it on the tie says the one thousandth store.
- 7:52Speaker 3: So now people on a simple Google search will know
- 7:55Speaker 3: an approximate five mile radius.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Of where I live. Man, I got a crash course
- 8:02Speaker 4: in Wawas.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you're missing out by not have I not so
- 8:06Speaker 3: much anymore? You? Yeah, it's all right, sorry man. And
- 8:11Speaker 3: here's the thing, right, I went to a wah wah
- 8:13Speaker 3: the other day, No, not the other day, I lie,
- 8:16Speaker 3: I went before I went on vacation. I went to
- 8:18Speaker 3: wah wah and it was a wah wah near my job.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And it's a little wah wah, no gas station. I
- 8:24Speaker 3: go in, I grab two hot dogs. Now, normally I
- 8:28Speaker 3: know this is intriguing podcast content.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Normally it has to do with hot dogs and barbecues.
- 8:34Speaker 4: So we're good.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah, So they normally have the two bottom shelves of
- 8:39Speaker 3: the heater, the heating container that they're in is regular
- 8:43Speaker 3: size hot dogs, and then the top two shelves are
- 8:45Speaker 3: reserved for like the quarter pound hot dogs. So I
- 8:50Speaker 3: normally don't even look at the top two shelves because
- 8:52Speaker 3: I'm not eating that. I want a regular two regular
- 8:55Speaker 3: hot dogs.
- 8:56Speaker 4: A quarter pound hot dog? Yeah, so how big is that?
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's a quarter pound?
- 9:03Speaker 4: I know, but.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Too much, man, So I grabbed two regular hot dogs right,
- 9:13Speaker 3: and then I got like I think I got like
- 9:15Speaker 3: a Coke zero cherry float flavor.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And I go up to the register and the very
- 9:22Speaker 3: nice woman rings me out and she goes, hey, I
- 9:25Speaker 3: have to ask all of the customers who are buying
- 9:27Speaker 3: hot dogs like a survey. You know, we're a test
- 9:30Speaker 3: store and we're no longer gonna be selling the quarter
- 9:35Speaker 3: pound hot dogs? Are you upset about that? And my
- 9:39Speaker 3: reply was never in my life have I ever or
- 9:42Speaker 3: will I ever purchase a one quarter pound hot dog?
- 9:46Speaker 3: And she went okay, perfect answer, and I just went
- 9:49Speaker 3: about my day.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Well, just for reference, I've pulled up what a quarter
- 9:57Speaker 4: pound hot dog looks like, and the hot dog itself
- 10:02Speaker 4: is bigger than the button.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I'm hold on, let's say quarter pound
- 10:08Speaker 3: hot dog. Look it up from wah wahka like at
- 10:12Speaker 3: wa wah at the end of your Google search. Uh yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 3: quarter pound hot dog three hundred and ninety calories.
- 10:19Speaker 4: It looks like the size of like a sandwich.
- 10:23Speaker 3: So it's really not. That's like a stand So okay.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Look if you look up quarter pound hot dog wa
- 10:28Speaker 3: wah and you go to images, the fourth image on
- 10:30Speaker 3: the right is the heating container.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Wait, hold on, they make meatball subs.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Dude, it's a whole It's a whole thing.
- 10:38Speaker 4: It's a whole I might just have to come to
- 10:40Speaker 4: Jerseys just for the meatball sub Wow.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Like, listen, man, if you come to why if you
- 10:46Speaker 3: come to Jersey and hang out with me and my wife,
- 10:49Speaker 3: I will take you to Wawa. It's like, honestly, I
- 10:53Speaker 3: feel like as a New Jersey native, I have no choice,
- 10:57Speaker 3: Like when you when you come, I have to take
- 10:59Speaker 3: you to woah. There's no choice. It's like it's like,
- 11:03Speaker 3: you know, when you go to a pharmacy, you have
- 11:05Speaker 3: to walk through the whole store to get to the pharmacy.
- 11:09Speaker 3: M h, when you come to New Jersey you have
- 11:11Speaker 3: to go to a wah wah in order to leave again.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Okay, So We're gonna go to wah Wah and then
- 11:18Speaker 4: how close the Seaside heights to where you live?
- 11:21Speaker 3: I'll have to ask my wife. Probably is that where
- 11:24Speaker 3: Jersey Shore was filmed?
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yeah? Is that what I do? I do? And I
- 11:31Speaker 4: will get one of the quarter pound hot dogs from
- 11:34Speaker 4: wah Wah's and I will take you there.
- 11:36Speaker 3: It's fifty three miles, it's an hour an hour and
- 11:38Speaker 3: twenty minutes away.
- 11:40Speaker 4: It's reasonable, right I. Okay, we'll pack, We'll pack a
- 11:43Speaker 4: couple of the quarter pound hot dogs to go.
- 11:45Speaker 3: We have to be careful because we're table in this
- 11:48Speaker 3: spit and apparently Wabah is testing getting rid of the
- 11:51Speaker 3: quarter pound hot dogs. So we have to find a
- 11:53Speaker 3: wah Wah that still is selling quarter pound hot dogs,
- 11:57Speaker 3: and if you meet four of them on the trip,
- 11:59Speaker 3: you could have a pound of hot before you get
- 12:00Speaker 3: the Seaside.
- 12:01Speaker 4: I'm gonna have to use the bathroom too.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Well used the one at the Jersey shorehouse.
- 12:11Speaker 4: That that thing has been through it.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So we are ten and a half minutes of this
- 12:16Speaker 3: episode and we still haven't even mentioned what movie we're
- 12:18Speaker 3: talking about.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Okay, here I got the perfect segue. Okay, do you
- 12:23Speaker 4: think that Uncle Sam would appreciate Ahahwa's hot dog or
- 12:29Speaker 4: a different type of barbecue item food. I guess. I think.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I think without Uncle Sam we wouldn't have hot dogs.
- 12:37Speaker 4: What were they cooking? Like ribs? The smoker probably like.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yo, yeah she was, and then she had to like
- 12:49Speaker 3: really chop them, which was bothersome to me that she
- 12:52Speaker 3: had to cut them.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I've never seen him cook that way. I mean not,
- 12:57Speaker 4: I mean once they were taken out or whatever, like
- 12:59Speaker 4: the way she was breaking them up.
- 13:00Speaker 3: What's your Fourth of July food? Like? What do you
- 13:03Speaker 3: are you like a like? Are you are you like
- 13:05Speaker 3: when you go to a function? Are you like a
- 13:08Speaker 3: finger like chips and sausa tarcuterie board or you like
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Wait for the charcoity board. Yes, I like Italian sausage.
- 13:18Speaker 4: I like smash burgers.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Smash Burgers.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that those are like the two that
- 13:27Speaker 4: come to mind.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Smash Burgers are the best burger oh by far, like variant,
- 13:33Speaker 3: you know what I mean?
- 13:34Speaker 4: I like them with So I'll cook them and you
- 13:39Speaker 4: know whatever, you know, cheese obviously, onions, and then I
- 13:45Speaker 4: like to put out I'll cook up some hob and
- 13:47Speaker 4: arrow peppers put it on top. Man, I say, I
- 13:50Speaker 4: like stuff spicy. So when I'm man in the grill,
- 13:55Speaker 4: that's the move. But if I go somewhere more often,
- 13:59Speaker 4: they're not there gonna have something like that.
- 14:01Speaker 3: So so you're not like a five guys guy. These
- 14:04Speaker 3: are not smash burgers.
- 14:06Speaker 4: No, those are messy burgers. Man. It's like too much.
- 14:09Speaker 4: It depends at least my my one and only experience
- 14:14Speaker 4: I've had, I felt like it was like overkill.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to go to five guys at least
- 14:17Speaker 3: five times to get the full experience. But the problem
- 14:23Speaker 3: with five guys is it's like thirty dollars by the
- 14:25Speaker 3: time you get everything.
- 14:27Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. I always remember I don't know
- 14:32Speaker 4: if it was there, but I remember, like I think
- 14:35Speaker 4: it was there because they got it to go and
- 14:38Speaker 4: the bag was like all oily.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it's because they put the fries in the bag,
- 14:44Speaker 3: which is like the they it's it's so strange. They
- 14:48Speaker 3: cook the fries and then they put it in a
- 14:50Speaker 3: cup and then the cup goes in your bag and
- 14:52Speaker 3: then they take another scoop of fries and just throw
- 14:54Speaker 3: it in your bag.
- 14:58Speaker 4: So what's your go to barbecue food or like like
- 15:04Speaker 4: a hot dog.
- 15:05Speaker 3: You know, my problem with burgers is like, don't.
- 15:07Speaker 4: What is it about the hot dogs? Or oh wait,
- 15:10Speaker 4: let me backtrack. How do you how do you? Uh?
- 15:14Speaker 4: How do you like? What condiments do you like? I
- 15:17Speaker 4: can't even talk. Just ketch up, that's it, just ketch up.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Okay, I'm not making a like a like a city
- 15:29Speaker 3: dog here, I'm just just gon ketchup and a couple
- 15:31Speaker 3: of hot dogs. Here's my problem with burgers, man, I
- 15:34Speaker 3: don't like the frozen burgers that people buy. Hell no
- 15:39Speaker 3: from shop, like when you go to a supermark. I
- 15:41Speaker 3: don't like those.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Absolutely not. That's not how you that's how you do it.
- 15:45Speaker 3: That's what most people make. Now.
- 15:46Speaker 4: If you absolutely not, I'll leave.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Like if you told me, like, hey, I bought this
- 15:50Speaker 3: eighty twenty ground brief and I smash it up and
- 15:53Speaker 3: I put a little cheese in it, and you know
- 15:55Speaker 3: I mean all that Like that's great. I will eat that.
- 15:57Speaker 3: But I prefer my burger off of a flat top
- 16:01Speaker 3: rather than a traditional grill yep, because you can make
- 16:04Speaker 3: smash burgers with them.
- 16:07Speaker 4: I had a smash burger a couple of weeks ago.
- 16:10Speaker 4: I'm still thinking about it. So if that tells you
- 16:13Speaker 4: the lasting impact that these burgers can have.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Well if you want, now that we're almost
- 16:19Speaker 3: fifteen minutes in, do you want to mention what movie
- 16:21Speaker 3: we're here to talk?
- 16:23Speaker 4: Well, yeah, speaking of smash burgers, and this is a
- 16:26Speaker 4: different type of smashing, but we are going to be
- 16:29Speaker 4: talking about none other than William Lustigg's Uncle Sam that
- 16:34Speaker 4: came out in nineteen ninety six. This is a in
- 16:39Speaker 4: my mind, this will always be a video store staple.
- 16:42Speaker 4: And we both covered the four K release from Blue
- 16:47Speaker 4: Underground and I love this movie. I have a lot
- 16:51Speaker 4: of fun with it every time that I've had a
- 16:54Speaker 4: chance to revisit it, and it felt like the most
- 16:56Speaker 4: appropriate movie we could pick for this time of year.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah. The couple couple of fun things I learned about
- 17:03Speaker 3: this movie. One, it's written by Larry Cohen. So, what's
- 17:07Speaker 3: your favorite Larry Cohen movie?
- 17:12Speaker 4: I like, I like the stuff.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's mo Money.
- 17:18Speaker 4: It's probably probably one of my favorites. What about for you?
- 17:21Speaker 3: Uh, it's a live well, it's a it's a live trilogy.
- 17:26Speaker 3: But I definitely have a soft spot for Q the
- 17:28Speaker 3: Wing Serpent. Another thing I learned the movie was edited
- 17:33Speaker 3: by Bob Morowski, owner of Grindhouse Releasing and editor to
- 17:37Speaker 3: Sam Raimi has edited I think every Sam Raimi movie.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Actually, that's incredible.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so there's some there's some cool talent behind this man.
- 17:47Speaker 3: This was one that I didn't saw this in a
- 17:51Speaker 3: video store all the time. Uh. I think my interest
- 17:56Speaker 3: in Bill lustig really kind of like Maniac and Maniac copt.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, his his obviously the most triumphant part
- 18:09Speaker 3: of his career and for the most part, like I
- 18:12Speaker 3: really associate him mostly with the formation of Blue Underground
- 18:16Speaker 3: and their restoration efforts totally and all that stuff, And
- 18:21Speaker 3: forgot up until the other night when we decided to
- 18:24Speaker 3: cover this that this was a build Lusting movie, because
- 18:26Speaker 3: if I'm being frank, it doesn't feel like a Bill
- 18:28Speaker 3: Lusting movie.
- 18:31Speaker 4: No, it. I think this film has, like you had mentioned,
- 18:36Speaker 4: it has signature traits of his, but I don't feel
- 18:42Speaker 4: like through and through it's as slazy of a movie
- 18:45Speaker 4: compared to something like Maniac or even Maniac Cop or
- 18:49Speaker 4: any of the sequels for that matter. Yeah, this, I think,
- 18:55Speaker 4: kind of going back to what we were talking about earlier,
- 18:57Speaker 4: I think that this is a little bit more tame
- 19:01Speaker 4: and less sleazy. I would say overalls a slasher.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Do you think that's a nineties thing? I mean this
- 19:06Speaker 3: comes out the same year's Scream, you know, do you
- 19:09Speaker 3: think that was just horror culture wasn't as into that anymore?
- 19:14Speaker 3: Or do you think this was like a for higher job?
- 19:17Speaker 3: Like what do you think happened here?
- 19:22Speaker 4: I mean, I feel like when this film was coming out,
- 19:26Speaker 4: I mean this would have been I feel like in
- 19:28Speaker 4: a transition for horror around this time. I felt like
- 19:32Speaker 4: nineties horror was there's like certain moments I feel like
- 19:35Speaker 4: it's finding its footing. You know, you get films I
- 19:38Speaker 4: think are more notable, notable like Candy Man, Army of Darkness.
- 19:49Speaker 4: You know, I'm trying to think, what are what are
- 19:52Speaker 4: a few others I feel like came out early nineties.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I feel like there's something I'm forgetting.
- 19:57Speaker 3: The Cemetery Man, Yep, there's a lot popcorn. I mean
- 20:04Speaker 3: you also had like Bordella of Blood spinning off of
- 20:07Speaker 3: Tales from the Crypt.
- 20:08Speaker 4: You had demon Misery, Dead Alive.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Sounds of the Lamps that come out in ninety one
- 20:13Speaker 3: that really just kind of uprought it, like kind of
- 20:17Speaker 3: split hairs about what is a horror what is thriller?
- 20:20Speaker 3: And you got a lot of spin offs of of that,
- 20:22Speaker 3: Like there was a lot happening before nineteen ninety six, I.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Think Child's Play two. Yeah, But I feel like before
- 20:32Speaker 4: you know you had you had some more notable films.
- 20:34Speaker 4: I feel like that this is just kind of lost
- 20:36Speaker 4: in the shuffle of like when we're starting to change
- 20:40Speaker 4: directions when it comes to horror. Nonetheless, I feel like
- 20:44Speaker 4: it's a it's a solid, underrated ninety slasher that I
- 20:48Speaker 4: feel like, you know, it's It's definitely a film that
- 20:52Speaker 4: I always enjoy going back to No.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's interesting because Larry Cohen also wrote the
- 21:00Speaker 3: Mania Cop trilogy, so Bill Lustig worked with Cohen for that,
- 21:05Speaker 3: and Larry Cohen had approached him with the concept title
- 21:08Speaker 3: and actually the poster art for Uncle Sam that he
- 21:11Speaker 3: was going to bring to investors, and he was the
- 21:13Speaker 3: one who was like, oh, hey, we should go work
- 21:15Speaker 3: with Blustig. And it's interesting because their work on Mania
- 21:22Speaker 3: Cop Maniac Cop actually helped get a higher budget for
- 21:26Speaker 3: Uncle Sam. They had a shooting budget of two million
- 21:30Speaker 3: dollars that was significantly higher than they had before. Where
- 21:34Speaker 3: Larry Cohen was getting offered before Lustig became involved. So
- 21:40Speaker 3: it's an interesting one. Man. It's one that I like.
- 21:44Speaker 3: It's it's it definitely falls in the territory of like
- 21:49Speaker 3: I could watch it once a year around four July
- 21:52Speaker 3: and then forget it exists for a year. It does.
- 21:57Speaker 3: It's a movie that takes a while to get going.
- 22:00Speaker 3: It really like the first half of this movie really
- 22:03Speaker 3: drags except for stilts Man and then that's that's a highlight.
- 22:09Speaker 3: But yeah, one that I don't I don't love this movie,
- 22:14Speaker 3: but when it becomes a slasher movie in the second half,
- 22:16Speaker 3: I really having a lot of a lot of fun
- 22:19Speaker 3: with it.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Man.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And there's some real like goofy shit in this movie
- 22:25Speaker 3: that's pretty like I have never in my life thought
- 22:30Speaker 3: if there was a killer running around, I'm gonna run
- 22:32Speaker 3: into town and grab a cannon to blow this sucker
- 22:38Speaker 3: away with.
- 22:40Speaker 4: I thought. The angle to this film that I think
- 22:46Speaker 4: is just so so strange is the connection that Uncle
- 22:52Speaker 4: Sam has with Barry the Blind Boy.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I didn't really ever understand that, like what was up
- 23:01Speaker 4: with that. It kind of reminded me a little bit
- 23:03Speaker 4: of like Halloween, five.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Yeah. And what's so funny to me is that there's
- 23:09Speaker 3: a there's a there's a scene in this movie where Jed,
- 23:17Speaker 3: who is a sergeant that knows his uncle Jodey's uncle Sam,
- 23:22Speaker 3: where he goes into town to fetch this cannon that
- 23:26Speaker 3: they had for the Fourth of July festivity, say he's
- 23:27Speaker 3: gonna use to kill Uncle Sam with, essentially, and he
- 23:34Speaker 3: pulls back up to the house. He literally rolls up
- 23:38Speaker 3: to the house and the kid in a wheelchair, which
- 23:41Speaker 3: what is his name is it? I can't find him.
- 23:45Speaker 4: In Barry Is it Barry, the one that's blind?
- 23:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, wheelchair.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Hey, he's got he's got a mental link with Uncle Sam.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And he's just he's just the truck pulls up with
- 23:59Speaker 3: the can and he's just sitting there on the sidewalk
- 24:02Speaker 3: by himself, staring off into nothing because he's blind. And
- 24:08Speaker 3: my first thought was like, who, where is anybody taking
- 24:11Speaker 3: care of this kid?
- 24:12Speaker 4: Where?
- 24:14Speaker 3: And then he yells, he yells to the in the
- 24:17Speaker 3: house to Jodie. He goes, we're here at I think
- 24:20Speaker 3: he was there the whole time. I think he was
- 24:22Speaker 3: just left there. Well.
- 24:26Speaker 4: And the other thing was is like Barry has all
- 24:28Speaker 4: the scars like it didn't his parents kind of allude
- 24:31Speaker 4: to that he got into some trouble, right, yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I think it was like a I think they were
- 24:36Speaker 3: trying to loud. It was like a fireworks accident or
- 24:38Speaker 3: something like that. Is that what it was.
- 24:41Speaker 4: I don't know that's what they about.
- 24:45Speaker 3: It's very Let's see. I'm gonna do some uh some
- 24:49Speaker 3: some searching here. Let's see if I if I google
- 24:53Speaker 3: this is this is basically how the show is built. Here,
- 24:56Speaker 3: if I google something, it says, uh oh yeah, see this.
- 25:00Speaker 3: It says the character Berry is blind and scarred with
- 25:03Speaker 3: burns because he was a victim of a severe fireworks accident.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Well keep that in mind when you're out there shooting
- 25:12Speaker 4: off fireworks.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And then, for unexplained supernatural reasons, Barry develops a psychic
- 25:17Speaker 3: link with Sam Harper.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Okay, So it wasn't just me that I was confused
- 25:23Speaker 4: on what the connection was. I have to say the
- 25:27Speaker 4: beginning of this film, there was something about it that
- 25:30Speaker 4: kind of reminded me of the guests, just with that
- 25:34Speaker 4: weird military connection, and you know, you have you have
- 25:39Speaker 4: basically like a soldier coming back and you know they're
- 25:43Speaker 4: like unstoppable in a lot of ways, or at least
- 25:47Speaker 4: they seem to be.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Well, it's silly because the beginning of the movie has
- 25:52Speaker 3: two soldiers coming up upon a helicopter crash site that
- 25:57Speaker 3: I guess, according to the dialogue was Barry. Nobody knew
- 26:00Speaker 3: it was out there, and the guy who found the
- 26:04Speaker 3: site says to to the sergeant. He says, the bodies
- 26:10Speaker 3: are burnt to a crisp, not recognizable, So the sergeant
- 26:15Speaker 3: sends his guy in there and goes, oh, can you
- 26:18Speaker 3: fetch the dog tag? So we know who this who
- 26:20Speaker 3: these people are. And our main character, Sam Harper, who's
- 26:24Speaker 3: our main antagonist, has barely any burns on his face
- 26:28Speaker 3: and is easily recognizable in the driver's seat of the helicopter,
- 26:32Speaker 3: which also makes no sense because his nephew, Jody, are
- 26:37Speaker 3: primary character in this movie, said that his uncle was
- 26:40Speaker 3: a gunner, but he was in the pilot's seat. I
- 26:43Speaker 3: don't know what's happening, I.
- 26:44Speaker 4: I What does he say, don't be afraid it's only
- 26:50Speaker 4: friendly fire?
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah, friendly yeah, only because it happens in war. The
- 26:57Speaker 3: teacher said, it's a tragedy.
- 27:00Speaker 4: Well, okay, So here's my thing is I feel like
- 27:09Speaker 4: Jody who's choosing to idolize kind of a strange choice.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Obsession.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like, what's up with that? Man?
- 27:20Speaker 3: I couldn't figure out for the life of me what
- 27:24Speaker 3: this movie was trying to be because we try not
- 27:30Speaker 3: to look too into it. Obviously, I don't think there's
- 27:33Speaker 3: a lot here to dissect or like analyze in that way.
- 27:37Speaker 3: But I couldn't figure out if the movie was like
- 27:41Speaker 3: pro patriotism or satirizing it.
- 27:44Speaker 4: I I was wondering the same thing because initially, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 4: obviously Jody's very pro patriotism, and then we get to
- 27:55Speaker 4: a certain point where was Sergeant Crowley. Uh yeah, so
- 28:04Speaker 4: he's basically as soon as Jody starts bringing up how
- 28:09Speaker 4: much he appreciates his uncle and how he idolizes him
- 28:14Speaker 4: and wants to be in the military, he basically shoots
- 28:16Speaker 4: it down at me. Immediately, I'm like, okay, so we're
- 28:20Speaker 4: not We're not for the military. I'm just kind of
- 28:22Speaker 4: confused that the message that we're trying to get across here.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because he comes out, he him and Jed go
- 28:30Speaker 3: outside so Jody can see Jed's fake leg that he
- 28:35Speaker 3: lost in battle, and Jody says to him, I'm I'm
- 28:42Speaker 3: I don't know if I should go into the Air
- 28:43Speaker 3: Force or into the army or into the Marines. And
- 28:47Speaker 3: Jed gets really angry and goes on a tyrant about
- 28:51Speaker 3: how our tyree, about how they used to know what
- 28:55Speaker 3: they were fighting for and now they don't, and if
- 28:59Speaker 3: he's gonna get involved in that mess, why would he
- 29:01Speaker 3: do that? And his uncle Sam comes up, Sam Harper,
- 29:06Speaker 3: and Jed talks about how he kind of accidentally influenced Sam.
- 29:12Speaker 3: He didn't mean to, but somehow he influenced him. And
- 29:15Speaker 3: over the course of the movie, we learned that that
- 29:17Speaker 3: that Sam was more of a way, more of a
- 29:19Speaker 3: piece of shit than oh that ever gave on.
- 29:23Speaker 4: That's an understatement because once Jody has a conversation with
- 29:27Speaker 4: his mom and aunt.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yeah, we find out I was actually abusive.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Yeah, And I was like I remember the first time
- 29:34Speaker 4: watching this. I mean it was years ago, but I
- 29:37Speaker 4: remember even being like aware enough to understand like, oh wow,
- 29:41Speaker 4: this is like really going to some dark places.
- 29:44Speaker 3: That's the lot to me. I know Cohen wrote this,
- 29:46Speaker 3: but that's what feels the most lustic here. Yeah, because
- 29:50Speaker 3: the grimy kind of side of it.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Oh, it was Jody's right. It was Jody's mom who
- 29:57Speaker 4: had been basically abused since she was what six something
- 30:02Speaker 4: like that. Yeah, and then she says, not that not
- 30:07Speaker 4: that this is funny, it's just the way that it's
- 30:09Speaker 4: presented is that how did how did the mom put
- 30:13Speaker 4: it that She's like, was glad when he got married
- 30:18Speaker 4: because she was no longer the only victim, and then
- 30:22Speaker 4: she felt bad about it afterwards. I was like, so
- 30:27Speaker 4: you didn't say anything then, like you were just kind
- 30:30Speaker 4: of whatever about it. I don't know. It's very strange.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and this movie is very just like the whole
- 30:38Speaker 3: character of Uncle Sam, which we should just say for people.
- 30:43Speaker 3: He gets so his body is found along with the
- 30:46Speaker 3: bodies of everybody else into helicopter crash, and he is
- 30:50Speaker 3: sent home for there to be a proper funeral for him,
- 30:57Speaker 3: and he basically wakes up due to this anti patriotism.
- 31:05Speaker 3: So he's running a flag in the graveyard that he's
- 31:07Speaker 3: gonna be buried in, and he collects his metals that Jody,
- 31:13Speaker 3: his nephew, is holding on to, and he goes on
- 31:16Speaker 3: a killing streak and kills anybody who is not patriotic
- 31:19Speaker 3: or who anybody who is being some sort of way
- 31:22Speaker 3: towards our country. He goes to the killing Streak for
- 31:27Speaker 3: he like, there's you have like these weird mini like
- 31:33Speaker 3: exposition dumps to kind of tell you how bad of
- 31:39Speaker 3: a person he is and why we should fear him.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Once he gets up and out of the coffin, which
- 31:43Speaker 3: is like forty five minutes into this movie.
- 31:46Speaker 4: It takes a little bit time to get there.
- 31:48Speaker 3: It feels so strange because the very beginning of the movie,
- 31:51Speaker 3: after we see the incident in the desert, the first
- 31:56Speaker 3: introduction of Jody, his uncle Sam isn't a There's a
- 32:02Speaker 3: photo of his uncle Sam next to his bed. He
- 32:03Speaker 3: knocks it off, it breaks, and then the kid is
- 32:06Speaker 3: stupid enough to get out of bed and cuts his
- 32:08Speaker 3: foot on the glass from the picture that just fell
- 32:10Speaker 3: off his end table and broke on his floor. So
- 32:14Speaker 3: he goes into his mom.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Was he bleeding? At this point, I'm thinking, like, is
- 32:19Speaker 4: this guy dragon blood all over the house. Yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 3: So his mom is like, you're okay, you just need
- 32:25Speaker 3: some antiseptic and a band aid, and then she begins
- 32:29Speaker 3: to like talk about how like already She's like, oh, yeah,
- 32:34Speaker 3: you know, your uncle Sam was not you know not great,
- 32:38Speaker 3: And I'm like, okay, so this is just how we're
- 32:40Speaker 3: going to get all this information. The whole movie is
- 32:42Speaker 3: through these dumps of what happened before, because we have
- 32:45Speaker 3: no other way, Like, why should we fear this guy
- 32:48Speaker 3: other than he's dead and he's up walking around and
- 32:50Speaker 3: killing people. You have to establish how shitty he really
- 32:54Speaker 3: was when he was alive.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Not someone you want to idolize, exactly.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and Jody, like, there's a whole sequence where Jody
- 33:02Speaker 3: brings this which is so weird. He brings the metals.
- 33:07Speaker 3: So after his body is found and confirmed that he died,
- 33:12Speaker 3: he brings the metals, which is in an AMMO container,
- 33:15Speaker 3: to school and tells his teacher about his uncle and
- 33:22Speaker 3: how he was found dead and he has the medals,
- 33:23Speaker 3: and the teacher goes and lets him do like a
- 33:26Speaker 3: show and tell presentation until he calls him a whimp
- 33:30Speaker 3: for being a draft dodger.
- 33:32Speaker 4: No, and yeah, I was like damn yeah.
- 33:37Speaker 3: So this whole time, I'm like, this is so cool
- 33:39Speaker 3: for this teacher, this social social studies history teacher to
- 33:43Speaker 3: do this. And then the teacher's like, okay, open your
- 33:47Speaker 3: open your math books. We're gonna go to pay So
- 33:50Speaker 3: he was doing this all in math class. This wasn't
- 33:53Speaker 3: even like a story teacher.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it was kind of a strange choice. So I
- 33:58Speaker 4: was like, so this, like where did this come? Like?
- 34:02Speaker 4: How did this come up?
- 34:04Speaker 3: Also? Was I the only one that was also very
- 34:07Speaker 3: confused and couldn't tell the difference between the mom and
- 34:09Speaker 3: his sister.
- 34:11Speaker 4: I was just as confused.
- 34:14Speaker 3: I still don't know who was who. In some scenes,
- 34:17Speaker 3: I don't know, they look exactly the same, which I
- 34:20Speaker 3: good on casting, but also the zero distinction.
- 34:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean yeah, I think like if you're if
- 34:27Speaker 4: you're trying to get actresses that at least have some
- 34:31Speaker 4: sort of a resemblance for the sake of being his sisters.
- 34:34Speaker 4: It was effective, but I feel like there were moments
- 34:37Speaker 4: where it got really confusing, like who was who?
- 34:41Speaker 3: There's one point where the same they're in the same
- 34:44Speaker 3: room and I lost track of who was talking to.
- 34:48Speaker 4: Oh is that where the uh? Because I know the
- 34:50Speaker 4: scene where they were. They were going back and forth
- 34:52Speaker 4: and they were explaining what Uncle Sam had done. Yeah,
- 34:56Speaker 4: and they're very hesitant to talk about it, and they're like,
- 35:00Speaker 4: he's not ready for this conversation. I was like, I
- 35:02Speaker 4: think you need to tell this kid what's up, because
- 35:05Speaker 4: he is he's like on the fast track to becoming
- 35:08Speaker 4: like a Columbine killer over here.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, his obsession with his uncle is is very,
- 35:18Speaker 3: very worrisome. And it's one of those things where I
- 35:22Speaker 3: don't want to talk about this movie in a political
- 35:25Speaker 3: sense because there's so obviously like divide there, but this
- 35:29Speaker 3: is kind of a it feels like even when we
- 35:34Speaker 3: were young, Like I don't know how old you were
- 35:36Speaker 3: when you were first exposed to like Junior Rotc in
- 35:39Speaker 3: high school, if you had that, but I remember, like
- 35:43Speaker 3: seventh eighth grade being exposed to Junior Rotc, who was
- 35:48Speaker 3: like prepping people to eventually one day go into active
- 35:50Speaker 3: military and go into training, and it it always feels
- 35:55Speaker 3: like something that's that's beginning the conversation very young. It's
- 35:59Speaker 3: like when military recruiters would go to high school graduations
- 36:03Speaker 3: because they're desperate to get people to sign up for
- 36:06Speaker 3: the military, and they sell you this dream of you know,
- 36:11Speaker 3: serving your country and you know all the benefits that
- 36:14Speaker 3: you're going to get. And over the years, I feel
- 36:16Speaker 3: like the promise of those things has changed so much,
- 36:25Speaker 3: but for our generation, we were still young being fed
- 36:30Speaker 3: this thing, almost like you're being groomed for it, you
- 36:33Speaker 3: know what I mean, and then one day you have
- 36:35Speaker 3: to make a decision on if you're going to go
- 36:36Speaker 3: through it or not. So it's interesting the effect that
- 36:40Speaker 3: that has on somebody young whose idol is also you know,
- 36:44Speaker 3: somebody in the military who is a total just piece
- 36:48Speaker 3: of shit, worthless human being.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's uh it we find this out very quickly.
- 36:59Speaker 4: He's not a great guy, and I mean his wasn't
- 37:04Speaker 4: at one point. I don't remember if if it was
- 37:06Speaker 4: his wife or his Yeah, yeah, his sister, I can't
- 37:13Speaker 4: remember which one who had said that they were dreading
- 37:16Speaker 4: the fact like they were bringing the remains back home.
- 37:19Speaker 4: I was like, oh, it's very bad that if that case.
- 37:24Speaker 3: They bring the remains home and it's in the sisters
- 37:28Speaker 3: it's in Jodie's mom's house, to Jodie's house and they're
- 37:32Speaker 3: there overnight, and Jody's mom's piece of shit boyfriend thing,
- 37:40Speaker 3: the lawyer guy is like trying to turn her on,
- 37:45Speaker 3: and her dead brother's casket is like in the living
- 37:48Speaker 3: room in front of them with an American flag draped
- 37:51Speaker 3: over it. It's it's very odd.
- 37:54Speaker 4: It's he's got like a weird kink or something. I
- 37:56Speaker 4: don't know.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Yeah, right, it's funny because when she says, when she
- 38:01Speaker 3: says to him, like, not tonight, you know, my brother,
- 38:04Speaker 3: there's a dead body in the house, He like looks
- 38:07Speaker 3: at the body. He looks at the coffin and scoffs,
- 38:10Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, you're you suck dude, You're But
- 38:15Speaker 3: he when he does come to life, he kills wearing
- 38:18Speaker 3: this Uncle Sam costume that's that somebody wears to.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Be at the parade.
- 38:28Speaker 3: And I have to talk about this scene because it's
- 38:30Speaker 3: one of my favorite scenes in this whole movie, because
- 38:32Speaker 3: it's great comedy.
- 38:34Speaker 4: This might be the best scene of the whole film.
- 38:37Speaker 3: It probably is. It probably is. He We we get
- 38:40Speaker 3: these like POV shots from outside of a window, somebody
- 38:45Speaker 3: like peeping tom into a girl's room as she's getting changed,
- 38:49Speaker 3: like after a shower. Yeah, and we don't get any establishment.
- 38:54Speaker 3: There's no establishment of where we are in this random house,
- 38:57Speaker 3: of who this person is. We don't know, so we
- 39:00Speaker 3: assume it's like the ground floor because we see somebody
- 39:04Speaker 3: in an Uncle Sam costume peering in at her from outside.
- 39:08Speaker 3: So in my brain, I was like Okay, this is
- 39:11Speaker 3: obviously like a first floor. Her window is open. It's
- 39:15Speaker 3: really creepy that this guy is doing this.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Wait, did you think that this first watch? Did you
- 39:22Speaker 4: think this was Uncle Sam the killer at this point?
- 39:25Speaker 4: Only because I remember her first watch? I thought it was.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Only because I knew he gets this costume eventually, because
- 39:33Speaker 3: of the marketing. That was the only reason why at first,
- 39:36Speaker 3: And then I realized that this is actually the scene
- 39:39Speaker 3: leading up to him getting the costume. But we see
- 39:44Speaker 3: these shots and she's getting changed and the camera she
- 39:51Speaker 3: she notices he's there. She screams, he yells, and then
- 39:56Speaker 3: we cut to a wide shot outside of the house
- 39:59Speaker 3: and it's revealed that this Uncle Sam character is on
- 40:02Speaker 3: stilts looking at her through the second floor window, and
- 40:06Speaker 3: it is the greatest cut to outside and the he's
- 40:12Speaker 3: not wearing normal stilts. These are very long stilts.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Okay, here's my thing. One. It's a certain level of
- 40:20Speaker 4: commitment for somebody to go through all this effort just
- 40:23Speaker 4: to catch a glimpse. There's no guarantees he's getting anything
- 40:26Speaker 4: out of this, and he.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Can't run away at normal human speed. The man is
- 40:31Speaker 3: on two floor worth, two floors worth of stilts.
- 40:37Speaker 4: I'm thinking myself, like, how did he get there to
- 40:39Speaker 4: begin with?
- 40:40Speaker 3: Just walking by, and he's not even it wasn't even
- 40:43Speaker 3: the parade yet, he was just practicing in full costume,
- 40:45Speaker 3: I guess outside.
- 40:48Speaker 4: And then he tries to make a clean getaway. I'm
- 40:50Speaker 4: thinking to myself, like, this is not this is even feasible.
- 40:56Speaker 4: You're like going through a park, you miss step man,
- 41:00Speaker 4: You're like, you're fuck.
- 41:03Speaker 3: It's very it's very odd. It's just like I laughed.
- 41:07Speaker 3: It was this morning when I was finishing the movie,
- 41:09Speaker 3: and that was the scene that I left up on
- 41:11Speaker 3: and I laughed so goddamn heart in my living room
- 41:14Speaker 3: at that cut of just because I'm not expecting a
- 41:18Speaker 3: man to be It's ridiculous, it's insane. It's really just genuine,
- 41:23Speaker 3: the great, great humor, and probably, like you said, probably
- 41:26Speaker 3: the best scene of the whole inside.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Now as far as I mean, obviously, you know, we
- 41:33Speaker 4: know ultimately how Uncle Sam gets the costume. Did you
- 41:41Speaker 4: have any favorite like standout kills from the movie.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually thought the death of the the boyfriend,
- 41:54Speaker 3: so Jodie's mom's boyfriend, the lawyer being strung up on
- 41:58Speaker 3: the fireworks display. Oh, Yeah, was like exceptionally grotesque for
- 42:07Speaker 3: this movie, not in it's not really like a violent
- 42:10Speaker 3: death because we don't really see much, but it's just
- 42:13Speaker 3: so heinous what he goes through with the fire and
- 42:18Speaker 3: the fireworks being embedded in his chest and the sparks
- 42:21Speaker 3: shooting back on him into what eventually ends in an explosion.
- 42:26Speaker 3: It just felt it felt much more, much more brutal
- 42:34Speaker 3: than the beheading and the stabbing, you know what I mean.
- 42:38Speaker 3: It felt like it came from a bit of a
- 42:40Speaker 3: different nature than the rest of the movie.
- 42:43Speaker 4: For sure. I'd have to say, I mean, the the
- 42:47Speaker 4: flag kill is pretty well.
- 42:50Speaker 3: The flag kill, Yeah, well, because the sheriff is trying
- 42:55Speaker 3: to save the boyfriend up getting the fireworks on and
- 43:00Speaker 3: blows up and he rolls down the hill and Uncle
- 43:02Speaker 3: Sam picks up the flagpole and catches him on it.
- 43:06Speaker 4: Bring Hurley.
- 43:08Speaker 3: It's also to the beheading is very funny because he's
- 43:12Speaker 3: killing people who are very disrespectful to the flag or
- 43:17Speaker 3: to our celebration of Fourth of July, or anybody who's
- 43:20Speaker 3: anti patriotic, and he cuts this poor kid's head off
- 43:25Speaker 3: because I guess the kid agreed to sing the national
- 43:28Speaker 3: anthem and he goes on stage and can't sing at all,
- 43:31Speaker 3: so he just trolls this town wide Fourth of July. Yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 3: and then Uncle Sam cuts his head off.
- 43:39Speaker 4: He felt slighted, very.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Extreme, very extreme, and like, I love the commitment, which
- 43:50Speaker 3: is something very heavily I think inspired by Jaws, which
- 43:55Speaker 3: is like the mayor who, despite there being a death
- 43:59Speaker 3: at the fire finding bodies at the Fourth of July festival,
- 44:03Speaker 3: is like, no, this is what the people want. We
- 44:05Speaker 3: got to keep going. And then it just people continue
- 44:10Speaker 3: to die anyway, which is very much the Jaws.
- 44:14Speaker 4: And it feels like someone in a position of authority
- 44:18Speaker 4: is very disillusioned to like the scope of what exactly
- 44:22Speaker 4: is going on. But I agree, I mean there were
- 44:25Speaker 4: definitely shades of that. It's, uh, what I appreciate about
- 44:30Speaker 4: this movie is it definitely commits to the let's say,
- 44:34Speaker 4: the patriotic styles of kills that you get in the movie.
- 44:40Speaker 4: It's by no means I think a perfect slasher by
- 44:44Speaker 4: all accounts, but it's fun, like all the kills are entertaining,
- 44:50Speaker 4: you know.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Well it becomes like the movie goes from nothing
- 44:56Speaker 3: to then all of this. I mean, this movie's not
- 44:58Speaker 3: even ninety minutes long. You have nothing for forty five minutes,
- 45:02Speaker 3: and then it just becomes back to back to back
- 45:05Speaker 3: to back to back kill very quickly until you get
- 45:08Speaker 3: to the ending. And I will say that the reveal
- 45:15Speaker 3: because we get glimpses of his face. You see pretty
- 45:17Speaker 3: much his whole face when he's in the coffin, but
- 45:20Speaker 3: then once he puts on the mask, he we don't
- 45:23Speaker 3: see him again until the ending of the movie when
- 45:26Speaker 3: he is in his ex wife or his wife's house,
- 45:31Speaker 3: and Jody confronts him in the house and I'm trying
- 45:36Speaker 3: to figure out exactly who I think it's. David Frolick
- 45:41Speaker 3: plays him, Yeah, Master Stargeant Sam Harper, who has a
- 45:45Speaker 3: great look. I love the makeup effects on him. They
- 45:50Speaker 3: look really good. It not as cool as like a
- 45:54Speaker 3: big Ben from House, but you know, still a cool look.
- 45:58Speaker 3: It very much reminds me of Maniac Cop.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Yeah, man, it's a definitely a distinct look. I feel
- 46:06Speaker 4: like that they go all in on like the grotesque
- 46:12Speaker 4: side of the effects for his character. Yeah man, this
- 46:18Speaker 4: just a just a fun movie.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Well, the ending of the movie, they decide to use
- 46:24Speaker 3: a cannon to kill him, and it's like Jody needs
- 46:32Speaker 3: to get him outside for them to shoot him with
- 46:36Speaker 3: this cannon. So he comes outside and Jet is out
- 46:41Speaker 3: there and Barry is out there, and Jet is like,
- 46:45Speaker 3: I'm not going to fire the cannon. Jody is with him,
- 46:49Speaker 3: and Barry's in the wheelchair like, don't worry, he'll move.
- 46:55Speaker 4: He knows.
- 46:56Speaker 3: They shoot the cannon and the kid has to run
- 46:59Speaker 3: away from the explosion.
- 47:01Speaker 5: The first explosion, it is probably the most extreme way
- 47:09Speaker 5: to try to kill somebody.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Oh my god, for sure.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Let alone in such a short amount of time. They're
- 47:15Speaker 4: basically trying to sound off two shots at the house
- 47:20Speaker 4: and to get Uncle Sam. So I gotta ask you,
- 47:27Speaker 4: Uncle Sam. You know, second shot gets launched right into
- 47:30Speaker 4: the house explosion or No, No, the first shot or
- 47:36Speaker 4: the first shot hits him, right, he goes in the
- 47:38Speaker 4: house exploded.
- 47:40Speaker 3: No, the first shot, like I think it lands in
- 47:42Speaker 3: front of him and it explodes. And then remember he
- 47:45Speaker 3: walks out on fire.
- 47:48Speaker 4: That's after the first shot, right.
- 47:49Speaker 3: No, that's the first shot, okay, and then the shot
- 47:53Speaker 3: shoots him into the house.
- 47:54Speaker 4: Okay. So when he's walking out on fire, who did
- 47:58Speaker 4: it better? Michael Myers and Halloween two or Uncle Sam?
- 48:02Speaker 4: And obviously Uncle Sam.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Uncle Sam. Well Bill, I mean, if we remember from
- 48:07Speaker 3: Maniac Cop, I think Bill Lustig is the champion director
- 48:10Speaker 3: of fire stunts in movies because Maniac Cop had the
- 48:14Speaker 3: longest fire stunt I think on film for a long time,
- 48:21Speaker 3: and then he upped it with Maniac Cop two in
- 48:23Speaker 3: the church scenes Mania Cop two, which I remember thinking
- 48:28Speaker 3: there has to be a fire stunt Maniac Cop two.
- 48:31Speaker 3: You have to one up the first one, and they
- 48:34Speaker 3: did for Maniac Cop two, so very very hono.
- 48:37Speaker 4: Maniac Cop two, I think is probably the best one.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't like Badge of Silence.
- 48:44Speaker 4: I don't think it hits quite the same way. I
- 48:46Speaker 4: still enjoy it, but two's really good.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and shoots him with the second canon and he
- 48:54Speaker 3: blows into the house and explodes, And I want to
- 48:58Speaker 3: know what the ending of this movie is alluding to.
- 49:01Speaker 4: He's going to bring this up where we see.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Jody burning everything that he owns that's like the military,
- 49:07Speaker 3: and then it cuts to the weirdest choppy slow motion
- 49:10Speaker 3: shot of Jody's face as if like he is now,
- 49:16Speaker 3: Like you could have told me that the end of
- 49:18Speaker 3: the movie was meant to be like he's now, you know,
- 49:23Speaker 3: obsessed with or he's been possessed by his uncle's spirit
- 49:27Speaker 3: and he's now going to become, you know, a killer.
- 49:31Speaker 4: I mean, is there any other way to interpret it?
- 49:35Speaker 4: I think that that's it. Kind of it was very like,
- 49:37Speaker 4: uh foulcy kind of soal ending to it. It's like
- 49:41Speaker 4: very weird, and I was like, Okay, this is not
- 49:44Speaker 4: really what I was expecting for where this this ending
- 49:47Speaker 4: was going to go.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Would you have liked it better if it was like
- 49:49Speaker 3: a Halloween four where like he turned around and murdered
- 49:53Speaker 3: his mom.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Oh be incredible.
- 49:56Speaker 3: He was covered in blood and then Jed ran around
- 49:58Speaker 3: the corner and went no, no, oh my god. And
- 50:03Speaker 3: then in Uncle Sam too. They don't continue that plot
- 50:07Speaker 3: line at all.
- 50:10Speaker 4: I could appreciate it. I mean, do you feel like
- 50:12Speaker 4: it was a missed opportunity? We never got a sequel
- 50:13Speaker 4: to this? I mean, it's not too late.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Do I want one? No?
- 50:23Speaker 4: It is the thirtieth anniversary, after all.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Do I kind of think you should? Could you imagine
- 50:28Speaker 3: this movie with current politics?
- 50:30Speaker 4: Oh? Boy, I don't. I don't know how. I don't
- 50:34Speaker 4: think it'll go over too well.
- 50:36Speaker 3: That would be extreme, absolutely extreme. Uh No, I think
- 50:40Speaker 3: this movie's fine as a one and done. You know,
- 50:45Speaker 3: it's we had we had to do this for staff picks,
- 50:47Speaker 3: because it's not a movie that kind of requires discussion,
- 50:54Speaker 3: you know.
- 50:55Speaker 4: And no, it's it's festive for the fourth of July.
- 51:00Speaker 3: It is, and I think movies like this are and
- 51:03Speaker 3: according to like the very minimal research I did, Lustig
- 51:05Speaker 3: really took this up as an opportunity to do a
- 51:08Speaker 3: festive holiday based horror movie. And it never really tries
- 51:16Speaker 3: to be more than that. It really just kind of
- 51:19Speaker 3: is what it is. There's not a lot to look
- 51:22Speaker 3: into at any deeper level. I do love though this,
- 51:28Speaker 3: Like once the killing begins and Uncle Sam is up,
- 51:32Speaker 3: it just keeps going, it doesn't stop.
- 51:37Speaker 4: I wish we would have gotten more of that earlier.
- 51:40Speaker 4: I think the pacing it would have it would have
- 51:42Speaker 4: kept us as the viewer a little bit more engaged.
- 51:46Speaker 4: I mean, overall, it's it's still it doesn't really change
- 51:51Speaker 4: my opinion of the film, but I think it would
- 51:53Speaker 4: enhance maybe the experience a little bit more.
- 51:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it just felt like, you know, it's it's one
- 51:58Speaker 3: of those movies where you kind of watch it and
- 52:00Speaker 3: then forget it and move on.
- 52:03Speaker 4: I think a lot of people next July.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I think people like you and I and people
- 52:08Speaker 3: in our space. Uh, you know, they're like to us.
- 52:12Speaker 3: It's part of the beloved William Lustig category. Oh yeah,
- 52:15Speaker 3: it's like, yes, this is the guy who did it,
- 52:17Speaker 3: and we appreciate it because it was William Lustig who
- 52:20Speaker 3: did it. But in all honestly, it's probably my least
- 52:24Speaker 3: favorite film of his.
- 52:27Speaker 4: It doesn't have like the signature, like standout moments that
- 52:37Speaker 4: you're so accustomed to getting and hit some of his
- 52:39Speaker 4: earlier films. It's I think it's, like I said, it's
- 52:42Speaker 4: a solid slasher, but I don't think it, you know,
- 52:45Speaker 4: comes close to the other films that he's done. Well,
- 52:48Speaker 4: he does.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Let's let's chat about him for a minute, because he does.
- 52:53Speaker 3: He was credited as Billy Bag for two adult films
- 52:56Speaker 3: in the late seventies. He did a movie called Hot
- 52:58Speaker 3: Honey and another one called The Violation of Claudia. And this,
- 53:03Speaker 3: like like a lot of directors in the late seventies,
- 53:06Speaker 3: porn was the entryway into directing. So he took the
- 53:11Speaker 3: same route and he goes and he does Maniac, which
- 53:15Speaker 3: is probably as extreme a film premiere you could do
- 53:22Speaker 3: possible If what anything I just said made any sense,
- 53:25Speaker 3: I don't even know if I was speaking English. There,
- 53:28Speaker 3: it's all the is. Yeah, he does Maniac and then
- 53:34Speaker 3: he goes on to does to do the Fred Williamson
- 53:36Speaker 3: vehicle Vigilante. Have you ever seen that?
- 53:39Speaker 4: I haven't.
- 53:41Speaker 3: I haven't either, or it's been a long time. Then
- 53:46Speaker 3: six years go by before Maniac Cop and he does.
- 53:51Speaker 3: He directs a movie called hit Lists. He directs another
- 53:53Speaker 3: movie in eighty nine called Relentless, neither of which I've seen,
- 53:58Speaker 3: and then nineteen ninety Cop two, nineteen ninety three, Mania
- 54:02Speaker 3: Cop three. He is credited in nineteen ninety five as
- 54:08Speaker 3: directing a Jeff Speakman movie called The Expert, but he
- 54:11Speaker 3: was actually replaced by Rick Avery, who is a stunt coordinator.
- 54:19Speaker 3: And then a year later he does Uncle Sam and
- 54:21Speaker 3: doesn't do anything until he produces the Alexander Aja Maniac remake.
- 54:27Speaker 3: And that's it.
- 54:29Speaker 4: Yeah, Basically after that point, I would have to assume
- 54:31Speaker 4: most of his time and effort went into the underground.
- 54:36Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's interesting because if you look at some
- 54:39Speaker 3: of his which I'm thankful for of course, Yeah, if
- 54:43Speaker 3: you look at some of his like he's expanded history.
- 54:46Speaker 3: He was an apprentice editor on Death Wish from nineteen
- 54:51Speaker 3: seventy four, which is incredible, and he's also a production
- 54:55Speaker 3: manager of of Inferno and Tenebrae from Daria Argento, So you.
- 55:03Speaker 4: Can definitely see where some of that influence comes from,
- 55:07Speaker 4: or maybe even the selections that he had on his
- 55:11Speaker 4: own label.
- 55:12Speaker 3: You know, are you a are you a Inglorious Bastards fan?
- 55:19Speaker 4: I am?
- 55:20Speaker 3: So. He was a production manager on a film called
- 55:22Speaker 3: The Squeeze from nineteen seventy eight, directed by Antonio Margat.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's right, I got yeah, yep, And so yeah,
- 55:34Speaker 3: this guy has had a hell of a run. You know,
- 55:37Speaker 3: he's been involved in a lot and now the owner
- 55:42Speaker 3: of the founder of Blue Underground, who, obviously for us
- 55:45Speaker 3: physical Media Collectors is a label that we hold very
- 55:48Speaker 3: dearly to our hearts, and it's it's it's interesting, man,
- 55:55Speaker 3: because I think guys like Bill Lustig, they're always going
- 55:59Speaker 3: to be remembered for Maniac and Maniac Cop and these
- 56:04Speaker 3: very grimy films that that definitely hold a longer impact
- 56:08Speaker 3: than I think Uncle Sam ever will, because if Uncle
- 56:12Speaker 3: Sam wasn't a fourth of July Slasher, I don't think
- 56:14Speaker 3: we'd be talking about it like this.
- 56:17Speaker 4: No, this, uh, this definitely feels like a video store staple.
- 56:20Speaker 4: I mean we were talking about earlier, and it feels
- 56:23Speaker 4: very much at home with like your fulla Moon movies, Carnosaur, Rumpel,
- 56:31Speaker 4: Stilt Skin, you know, films that were coming out like
- 56:33Speaker 4: roughly in that timeframe. So yeah, very fond memories. I
- 56:38Speaker 4: mean I always remember the lenticular cover for the VHS,
- 56:42Speaker 4: seeing that at the the video store. But yeah, man,
- 56:48Speaker 4: I mean it's definitely part of it. It always has
- 56:50Speaker 4: to be part of the lineup. I mean, you know,
- 56:51Speaker 4: you've got staples like Jaws, I know what you did
- 56:54Speaker 4: last summer, Return of the Living Dead, And I mean
- 56:59Speaker 4: I even throw into the mix, like, you know, films
- 57:01Speaker 4: like Katee Fear or Blowout, you know when yeah, fourth
- 57:05Speaker 4: of July rolls around. But this always deserves a spot
- 57:09Speaker 4: in that lineup. Yeah.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Yeah, And I love that we picked this first staff
- 57:13Speaker 3: picks because at least gets a conversation, oh yeah about
- 57:17Speaker 3: the movie, and you know, it's worth seeing. I don't
- 57:20Speaker 3: you know, I'm not one of those people that's like,
- 57:22Speaker 3: oh my god, you got to see Uncle Sam. But
- 57:25Speaker 3: it's you know, it's a fun slasher movie. We're pretty
- 57:28Speaker 3: used to watching things that are below a certain bar,
- 57:32Speaker 3: you know, and this is this kind of lives there
- 57:34Speaker 3: and it's it's grimy enough that you'll get your kicks
- 57:37Speaker 3: out of it, and it's definitely you know, there's there's
- 57:40Speaker 3: some pretty cool kills in here. And it feels a
- 57:44Speaker 3: movie that's really kind of trying to tackle like the
- 57:48Speaker 3: sensibilities of lustig, trying to go to the extreme in
- 57:51Speaker 3: some senses, but also kind of maybe some outside influencing. Hey,
- 57:56Speaker 3: we can't do that, we need to kind of keep
- 57:57Speaker 3: it here. So I just kind of feel like there's
- 58:01Speaker 3: a push in a pool there between that.
- 58:04Speaker 4: Sure.
- 58:05Speaker 3: I also don't think Larry Cohen is just the strongest
- 58:07Speaker 3: writer either.
- 58:08Speaker 4: I don't.
- 58:08Speaker 3: I'd never thought of him as a strong writer, So
- 58:11Speaker 3: maybe that's just me.
- 58:14Speaker 4: Do you have any other horror films or I guess
- 58:16Speaker 4: fourth or July films that you're planning to watch the
- 58:18Speaker 4: next couple of days.
- 58:20Speaker 3: We watch Independence Day, but I'll probably watch like I'll
- 58:25Speaker 3: probably watch well, Jaws always, we always watch Jaws. I'll
- 58:30Speaker 3: probably watch you know, I'm not the biggest fan of
- 58:33Speaker 3: I know what you did last summer. So if you
- 58:37Speaker 3: don't really watch that, maybe that'll really be it. I
- 58:40Speaker 3: don't know, no Return of Living Dead. I'll definitely sweeze
- 58:42Speaker 3: in it something.
- 58:43Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you gotta say that for tomorrow.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll sweeze that into you.
- 58:48Speaker 4: Now, do you watch I know you mentioned Jaws? Do
- 58:51Speaker 4: you watch just the first one? Or do you watch
- 58:54Speaker 4: that and all the sequels after just the first one? See,
- 58:59Speaker 4: I feel compelled every single time.
- 59:02Speaker 3: To watch all five, including Cruel Jaws.
- 59:07Speaker 4: In my heart, there are five Jaws films. I don't
- 59:13Speaker 4: think Steven Spielberg would be too fond of that comment.
- 59:16Speaker 3: But you know, yeah, that's really it for for Fourth
- 59:22Speaker 3: of July watches. I mean, there's really not a lot
- 59:28Speaker 3: else that comes to mind.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Top Gun you love for Top Gun?
- 59:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, yeah, of course, like I like Top Gun,

- 1:02:51Speaker 3: always doing incredible work. But I do want to shout
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: out one show in particular that I've been listening to.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: They're one of the newer shows on the network, and
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: that is the Nightmare USA podcast. For those who might
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: not be familiar, Stephen Thrower wrote a book about eighteen
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: years ago called Nightmare USA and it's a history of
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: the exploitation genre in the US, ranging from the late
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: sixties to the mid eighties. And it's a very extensive,
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: very exhausting book about the exploitation genre. And a podcast
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: has recently popped up that's covering every single movie in
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: that book, and there's a lot, I know because I've
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: been trying to watch all of them over the last
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: couple of days. Absolutely just incredible. They did release their
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: first episode where they talked about nineteen seventy nine Don't
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Go in the House.
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: Love that movie.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: Great movie, great episode. I'll have a link to that
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: down below. Make sure you'll give them a listen. And
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: us we're doing something a little different, So this is
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: coming out on fourth of July. Two days later on Monday,
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: we have an after hours coming out because you and
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: I are going to be next deep in prep for
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: a commentary episode talking about you want to tell the
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: people what we're gonna be do.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: It's gonna be what would you say, something a little
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: bit more uh erotic, Yeah.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: It's gonna be. Uh. You can get a little bit
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: of a little bit of Douglas, a little bit of Stone,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: a little bit of Dennis Nederie, a little bit of
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Wayne Knight. Get some. You're gonna get some, yeah, ice pick.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: I think that's all we need to say. That's like that,
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: That's like the perfect perfect way to round it out.
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: We'll leave it there. We'll leave it there. Uh. We
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: hope you have a great Fourth of July. Thank you
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: was always for hanging out with us. We'll see you
