- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Jacob Emerson with the
- 0:02Becker's Payer Issues podcast. Thrilled today to be
- 0:05joined by Vinay Kulkarni, who is the chief
- 0:07information officer at Scann Group. Vinay, thank you
- 0:10so much for taking the time to be
- 0:12with me on the podcast today.
- 0:13Awesome. Great great to be here. Excited to,
- 0:16talk about, the things that we wanna talk
- 0:18about. Yeah. Likewise. And and before we dive
- 0:20into all of that with you, Vinay, can
- 0:22you first tell us a little bit more
- 0:23about yourself, your background in health care, and
- 0:26what it is that you do today at
- 0:27SCAN?
- 0:28Sure.
- 0:29My name is Vinay Kulkarni.
- 0:31I am the CIO at SCAN Health Plan.
- 0:34I'm accountable for technology transformation and also adoption.
- 0:38I'm committed to driving business transformation by strategically
- 0:42aligning
- 0:43technology with our enterprise goals.
- 0:45I worked in healthcare payer systems and provider
- 0:47systems.
- 0:49Throughout my twenty five years of experience in
- 0:51technology leadership,
- 0:52I have dedicated to using technology for strategic
- 0:55enablement,
- 0:57delivering a secure and a seamless digital experience,
- 1:01improve outcomes, and create a better clinician experience,
- 1:04and ultimately improving our member lives.
- 1:07Fantastic. Well, Vinay, we're really excited to have
- 1:09you with us.
- 1:11I I first wanna get started by talking
- 1:13about, you know, the buzzword that everyone is
- 1:15consistently talking about nowadays within within the health
- 1:18insurance industry and and certainly within most industries.
- 1:21But given your extensive experience that you just
- 1:24outlined for us within digital transformation within the
- 1:27insurance space,
- 1:28how do you see artificial intelligence, automation shaping
- 1:31the future of Medicare Advantage?
- 1:34Yeah.
- 1:35You know, you rightly called it out as
- 1:37a as a buzzword,
- 1:39but I see it as
- 1:41a as a an evolution to a next
- 1:43step from where we started with the industrial
- 1:46revolution.
- 1:48AI and automation aren't going to replace people.
- 1:50That's the first thing that I wanna tell
- 1:52everyone. Our approach at SCAN is to advance
- 1:55our mission
- 1:56to keep older adults healthy and independent.
- 1:59Technology is a tool that enables us to
- 2:01make more personal, proactive, and accessible
- 2:05to all these members.
- 2:07We are using AI to identify members at
- 2:10high risk for hospitalization,
- 2:12improve care coordination,
- 2:13and enhance member experience through smarter
- 2:16service tools
- 2:18that help our teams respond faster and more
- 2:21and with more empathy.
- 2:23Our our approach is human plus machine and
- 2:26and notice that I say
- 2:28humans first
- 2:30because
- 2:31that's what really
- 2:32is the core of our
- 2:34ethic.
- 2:36Core of our our way of approaching,
- 2:39automation and AI.
- 2:41Automation handles the administrative work, so our clinicians
- 2:44and service teams can focus on what matters
- 2:46most,
- 2:47which is relationships,
- 2:49care quality, and member trust.
- 2:51We take a cautious and ethical approach and
- 2:54prioritize explainability,
- 2:56fairness and privacy.
- 2:58AI at SCAN is designed to support decisions,
- 3:03not to make decisions
- 3:05in isolation.
- 3:06As an industry evolves,
- 3:09AI and automation will separate
- 3:12the plans that deliver both quality and compassion,
- 3:15and we want to be on both quality
- 3:18and compassion.
- 3:19Absolutely. And and, Vinay, what role do you
- 3:22think that emerging technologies,
- 3:24like the ones we just mentioned, what role
- 3:26are they gonna play in scaling, you know,
- 3:27your your clinical models effectively across your diverse
- 3:31member population? How are you addressing the unique
- 3:34health care needs
- 3:35of the Medicare beneficiaries
- 3:37that you serve?
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:40Until recently,
- 3:42you know,
- 3:43health care was delivered as as a cohort,
- 3:46you know, where you are you're actually bringing
- 3:49a cohort of or a persona kind of
- 3:51thing and saying
- 3:53this persona of having, you know, somebody like
- 3:56a diabetes or having,
- 3:58other diseases, then we always used to cohort.
- 4:01But health care is much more personal than
- 4:03that.
- 4:04We need to have an n of one,
- 4:08which is basically just saying that everybody's
- 4:10health care
- 4:12needs are very different from the other person.
- 4:14Yes. There is a general
- 4:16layer of, okay, for this kind of setup,
- 4:19we need something
- 4:20in common.
- 4:21But at a person level, it has to
- 4:24be unique. That's what we are striving to
- 4:26get to.
- 4:27We we want to tailor care for the
- 4:29healthier seniors as well as those managing multiple
- 4:33chronic conditions or living in complex care settings.
- 4:36Talking about the complex care settings,
- 4:39we have a plan called Embrace.
- 4:41It's an I SNP plan, which is a
- 4:44special needs plan,
- 4:46that serves patients requiring higher level of care
- 4:49as they reside in institutional settings, such as
- 4:52skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes.
- 4:55The needs of these patients are high touch.
- 4:58You know, for a for example, for that
- 5:02that population, we spent more than fifteen hundred
- 5:05hours
- 5:06getting medical records retrieved.
- 5:09We are pursuing an automated outbound
- 5:12way of doing this. That's one example of
- 5:15how we are using AI, especially around the
- 5:18b to b use cases.
- 5:19We are also working on improving medical records
- 5:22summarize summarization for hospital discharge,
- 5:25for case management team, patient summaries for APCs.
- 5:30All these improve coordination of health care,
- 5:33and patient panel sizes for
- 5:35for for our entire clinician population.
- 5:38This gives them a picture of what is
- 5:41that they are going to see for each
- 5:43of their patient.
- 5:45Control the population,
- 5:47health at a smaller level. So that's the
- 5:49scale that we are trying to achieve.
- 5:52We also implemented some clinician co pilot to
- 5:55improve care coordination
- 5:56by surfacing
- 5:58incomplete tasks, you know,
- 6:00where people forget to do things. So bringing
- 6:03up those things, small little things,
- 6:05that matters a lot for our members.
- 6:08That's where we are going with that.
- 6:10Understood. So a lot of technology investments,
- 6:13both internally and and in things on the
- 6:16front end, facing facing your members, Vinay.
- 6:19Also, as you know, I wanted to ask
- 6:21about, the Medicare open enrollment period. It just
- 6:24started,
- 6:25in in the month mid October.
- 6:27And, you know, there's been a lot of
- 6:28changes this year, with with the Medicare Advantage
- 6:31market going into next year and what seniors
- 6:33are gonna be seeing. So where is SCAN
- 6:35leveraging new technology to not only enhance,
- 6:38payer provider relationships, but also streamline the care
- 6:41delivery as you expand into more markets?
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:46It's a exciting time for all the Medicare,
- 6:49Advantage
- 6:50companies,
- 6:52enrolling newer members and, making sure that we
- 6:55retain our existing members.
- 6:58You know, we are using technology,
- 7:00especially AI, in multiple places.
- 7:03You know, we we have to serve these
- 7:05new members.
- 7:06So in our contact center environment, we have
- 7:08deployed generative AI and automation tools,
- 7:11that allow our members to reduce after call
- 7:14work.
- 7:15We are not using
- 7:16the technology
- 7:17to,
- 7:19to talk to our members, but we are
- 7:20using technology and AI to be able to
- 7:24enhance our
- 7:25members'
- 7:26experience with our call centers
- 7:28and support more personalized conversation with members. That's
- 7:32where we're investing from a member services or
- 7:35a contact center environment purposes.
- 7:38I talked a little bit about embrace.
- 7:41You know, this is where we have our
- 7:42clinicians seeing our patients.
- 7:45We we want to have our clinicians
- 7:47have more face time with those patients,
- 7:50reduce screen time.
- 7:51As part of this, and you are
- 7:54through, ambient dictation and automated care ops flow,
- 7:57this is new thing that we have introduced
- 7:59here, which is care ops. We we have
- 8:01significantly reduced the administrative burden for our clinicians.
- 8:05For example, through an AI based risk stratification
- 8:09approach,
- 8:10we empower providers to visit patients
- 8:12based on their clinical needs and allow clinicians
- 8:15to have
- 8:16larger patient panels without actually sacrificing the quality
- 8:19of care.
- 8:20We also used ambient dictation alongside.
- 8:23This is this is helping us
- 8:26to be able to have
- 8:28our clinicians have more face time and also
- 8:32summarization of the documentation.
- 8:34This this allows a super important thing within
- 8:38health care, which is building a relationship between
- 8:40the patient and the clinicians.
- 8:43This also reduces some of the cost that
- 8:46that is
- 8:47that we incur when you actually see a
- 8:50patient. So this is this is our way
- 8:52of introducing technology slowly that can help our
- 8:55clinicians and our member services to be able
- 8:58to have give a better experience for our
- 9:00members.
- 9:01Well, Vinay, we've we've covered a lot of
- 9:03ground.
- 9:04Any any final thoughts or final bits of
- 9:06advice you wanna offer the other health plan
- 9:09leaders listening in?
- 9:11I think it is important to stay close
- 9:14to the business,
- 9:15and not just changes in technology.
- 9:17There are changes
- 9:19in regulatory too, but
- 9:21the landscape
- 9:22in technology has has been changing a lot.
- 9:26And
- 9:27this year, we are seeing a lot more
- 9:28changes in the health care.
- 9:31Example of that is, you know, we are
- 9:33looking at
- 9:34how how you can increase the
- 9:37better have better coverage through interoperability.
- 9:40There are some regulatory changes that are coming
- 9:42for that,
- 9:43and there are more,
- 9:45networks that are being established.
- 9:48How can we utilize those things,
- 9:51better in in our own health systems?
- 9:54We need to look at how how can
- 9:56we use the data that we already have
- 9:58and the new things that we are going
- 10:00to acquire through this interoperability.
- 10:03Second thing I would, I would say is
- 10:05keeping it very simple.
- 10:06When you are close to your business, you
- 10:08can predict a lot of problems
- 10:10that they're gonna face.
- 10:12We need to be empathetic to to our
- 10:15providers and members.
- 10:17Make it better for them. So these are
- 10:19some simple things that I would advise,
- 10:23anyone who's listening
- 10:25to make sure that we have a better
- 10:27experience for our members and providers.
- 10:29Fantastic. I think that's some great last bits
- 10:31of advice to leave on. So, Vinay, I
- 10:33wanna thank you for taking the time to
- 10:35sit down with us on the podcast today
- 10:37and for sharing your insights with our audience.
- 10:39We really appreciate it. Thank you. It was
- 10:42my pleasure too.
