- 3:09Here, mister Valentine, and might tell you that I'm writing this letter because
- 3:14I'm highly patriotic. I might say I'm writing because I want to see my
- 3:19husband in more trouble than he's already in. Neither would be true. I
- 3:23happen to love my husband and I want him brought back to the United States
- 3:28alive. If you and your assistant are prepared to take a rather lengthy trip,
- 3:32please call on me on the seat of this letter and I will explain.
- 3:37What can it be put in writing or as sincerely low as Craig.
- 3:53Well, missus Craig, your letter was a little confusing. Yes, I
- 3:57realized that after I'd written it, had you wanted your husband brought back alive?
- 4:02Just where is he, missus Brooks? Have you ever heard of Friday's
- 4:06Island? Well, yes, it's in the Pacific somewhere. Isn't Air's ride
- 4:11one of a cluster of islands in the general direction of Tahiti, And that's
- 4:15where he is? Yes, you see, Stanley and I were on a
- 4:17vacation by air in the South Pacific. On the way home, our plane
- 4:21landed on Friday's Island. Wow, so far it's clear. I suppose he
- 4:27decided to go and they even stay there. That's quite as romantic as that,
- 4:30mister Valentine. No, just before our plane took off, he said
- 4:34he was going back to speak to the stewardess. When we were in the
- 4:38air and he didn't come back. I investigated and he wasn't a bullet.
- 4:42He hadn't spoken to the stewardess, just stepped off the plane and disappeared.
- 4:46Ah, well, what did you do? Wouldn't they turn back and pick
- 4:49him up, or the captain of the plane send a radio message to the
- 4:53airport to locate him. He was there, all right, but he sent
- 4:57word back to me. What sort of word, Missus Cray, just that
- 4:59I should continue on home, that he had some business to attend to on
- 5:02the island and would come on when he'd finished it. What possible business could
- 5:08he have on a little Pacific island. Well, I have my suspicions,
- 5:12that's why I sent for you. But couldn't the authorities have you? If
- 5:16what I fear is true, I don't want the authorities to know about it.
- 5:21Well, I wonder if you could clear that up a little. By
- 5:26the way, what's your husband's business? He's a writer? Now, Well,
- 5:29wouldn't that explain to stay on the island, missus Craig racorch atmosphere?
- 5:32Something not quite You see, there's an organization, a very secret circle on
- 5:39Friday's Island, known only as the Group. Sounds like a communist set up,
- 5:45that's exactly what it is. Stanley found out. I don't know how
- 5:47that the group has practically completed plans for taking over the entire area. Well,
- 5:53that all sounds plain. Obviously, your husband knows what would make a
- 5:57great magazine, A newspaper story. I heaven told you one thing. Up
- 6:01until two months ago, my husband was in the Justice Department. He was
- 6:06relieved of his position because of what they term security reasons. Oh yeah,
- 6:13see what you mean now, missus Craig. But perhaps you're just jumping to
- 6:16conclusions. I'd hope so myself, mister Valentine. Until yesterday a man named
- 6:20Kester, one of the big powers in the communist movement in this country,
- 6:25called me what do they say? He wanted to know if Stanley had sent
- 6:28him any messages through me. I said he hadn't. He told me to
- 6:32expect some and to hold them for him. So I had all boils down
- 6:38to one thing. You feel your husband has gone in with a communist down
- 6:42there, and that if he keeps up, he'll get in trouble. Yes,
- 6:46And you want me to make him see the light and come back to
- 6:47the States, Is that right? Yes? I told him I love him.
- 6:51I don't want him to be disgraced, and I don't want him dead.
- 6:56Sometimes people with strong ideas are hard to convert. You. I don't
- 7:00care how you get him to come back, that's up to you. Here's
- 7:02a good dress on the island when you try. All right, missus Craig,
- 7:08I'll do my best to act like Frank Buck and bring him back alive.
- 7:34So this says Frye's Island Brooks. It's pretty Jill. It's blue skies
- 7:39and palm trees. Yeah, and slow moving natives. Hard to believe any
- 7:44of these people could get excited enough to hatch up a comedy plot. Missus
- 7:46Craig didn't say they were natives in the group. They could be figners.
- 7:50Probably are. Well, let's try and find the hotel and then call on
- 7:54Stanley Craig. Huh don't mister, Oh hello there, I hear you say
- 7:58you'd like to go to book Tello. Yeah, yeah, that's right,
- 8:01if you'll direct us have cottage here, happy you take, mister and missy
- 8:05far not far, just hot better you right, Yes, let's do it,
- 8:09Okay, yeah, sure, happy be they'll send a baggage up a
- 8:16letter I suppose Oh yes, oh yes, say you don't know what hotel,
- 8:20miss, Only one hotel in Fort Hope, mister, is called the
- 8:24International Oh surprised they don't call it the internationale. What do you say?
- 8:31Oh nothing, I think that's a little private joke. Oh, joke.
- 8:35We go. Sure, I put the bell phone. People know we come
- 8:41make with its own. Yeah. Say boy, the name it's Leon,
- 8:48Leon, se out your servant. Okay, Leon, Say tell me is
- 8:52this trans far from the hotel? Let's say here it is seventeen Bank Streets.
- 8:56Seventeen Bank Street. Yeah that's right, not far gone by waterfront.
- 9:03You want to go there, Yeah, but we'll go to the hotel and
- 9:05register first. You want to wait for me? Oh yes, I wait.
- 9:09I see you get to Bank Street very safe? Oh? Oh here,
- 9:28mister, this is house one seventeen. Yeah, all right, it
- 9:33wasn't very far. I wasn't oh, not far. I make knock on
- 9:43door. Oh look I don't need all this service. Thanks. Anyway,
- 9:48you know person who live here? Maybe no, not yet, Yes,
- 9:54but hello, I'm looking for Stanley Craig. Mister Craig is not the Oh
- 10:01that's too bad. I have a message for him. Well, perhaps I
- 10:05can take it. Step in, mister Valentine, young, we'll wait.
- 10:13Where is the young lady? Oh you know, wait a minute, you
- 10:18know who I am. Certainly I know you. And Miss Brooks arrived on
- 10:22the plane at two o'clock and registered at the International yeah, well who you
- 10:28grant? If is my name, Nicholas Granted? Now about the message for
- 10:33mister Craig. Who is it from? Why it's from Chester? If that's
- 10:39any of your business, and it is very much my business. There is
- 10:46a lot my time. I'm delivering the message to mister Craig and no one
- 10:48else. It is important that I have it. If you do not wish
- 10:52to cooperate, perhaps we will have to try other methods. Oh, I
- 10:58see, what's the idea of the gun. It is just to convince you.
- 11:05Uh huh, Well, I wouldn't do you much good to carry through
- 11:07on that, especially since miss Brooks knows just where I am and you don't
- 11:11know where the message is in the future. I would thank you to knock
- 11:20before coming in on. Oh is this nicness? What are you doing with
- 11:24the gun? This is mister Valentine. He is a messenger from my friend
- 11:30Kester in the States. Oh what does he say? Well, the gentleman
- 11:35is reticent about delivering the message, he insists on scene, mister Craig,
- 11:41a look past. The fun is fun. You know, we're all in
- 11:43this together. I'm just following orders, yes, yes, just following orders,
- 11:50of course. You're right. I admire your devotion to orders. Okay,
- 11:56thanks. This is where Craig lives, isn't it? Yes, it
- 12:00is all right. I want to see him. Where is he? Suppose
- 12:03you tell him, mamma, he's in jail. Mister in jail. But
- 12:09why we don't quite know? Some little chart but can't can't agree to something
- 12:16about him. I believe so, mister Valentine. I believe so well.
- 12:22And why don't you get on it. I don't plan to spend much time
- 12:24here. I have other places to go. We shall start proceedings immediately.
- 12:30Tell me, mister Valentine, where would you like to meet mister Craig.
- 12:35I'll stay in my room at the hotel all evening. I suppose you know
- 12:37the number of the room. You'll know everything else. Of course, your
- 12:43room is number thirty eight. Come, mamma, we shall visit the police
- 12:48so that mister Craig can keep his appointed. That's the minute, Yeah,
- 13:09mister Valentine, Yeah that's right. I'm Stanley Craig. Oh wow, come
- 13:13in come, thank you, mister Valentine. I understand you have a message
- 13:18for me. Yeah, yeah, that's right from Kester. Well. Uh
- 13:24no, now I'm afraid that was a little white lie. Then just why
- 13:28did you want to see me, mister Valentine. We don't go in for
- 13:33little white lies. No, no, I'm sure that I'm afraid the group
- 13:37wouldn't like that. You are quite right. Well, my message is from
- 13:43your wife, mister Craig. My wife, she'll right, she's quite all
- 13:46right. She's just afraid that you are not nonsense. You can see that.
- 13:52I am for the present, Yes I can. But how long can
- 13:54you go on? What do you mean by that? Missus? Craig sent
- 13:58me to bring you home. She thought I might be able to reform.
- 14:01I guess, but I see it's not easy to take anyone to the group.
- 14:07No, no it isn't. Now, Look, Craig, why do
- 14:11you want to gamble like this? Why don't you come home to your wife?
- 14:13I get the whole thing. I can't, Valentine, I'm in too
- 14:16deep. I got to see it through. Tell her that I don't know
- 14:22what more I can say. Uh, there's the lists in this box.
- 14:26Yeah, yeah, go ahead, help yourself. Thanks, I will.
- 14:31Do you have a light? Yes? Yeah, thanks. Valentine had already
- 14:41guessed your omission. Now listen to me. I'm lissing. I put a
- 14:46paper under the cigarettes in that box. If anything happens to me, meat
- 14:50it, do what it says, wait about it. I don't get it.
- 14:52We are very careful in the group, Valentine, we never know who
- 14:56maybe listening. Yeah, okay, mister Valentine, I suggest that you stay
- 15:03here in Port Hope for a few days. You may be able to deliver
- 15:07an important message back to the States for me. Well, okay, see
- 15:11you later. I hope any can always when I suppose, pretty stupid way
- 15:22to earn a trip to the South Pacificine, Oh granf what were you doing
- 15:28out there on the balcony watching your conference with mister Craig and I suppose you
- 15:33had a conversation. Though I tried very hard, Unfortunately no, I did
- 15:39hear. However, one important fact, such as that you did not bring
- 15:43a message from kest as you said, only a message from Demand's wife.
- 15:50Yeah. Well, I was a try, wasn't it. You have done
- 15:52what you came here to do. There is a plane through for the States
- 15:56tomorrow morning. I expect to take it and if I refuse. If you
- 16:03refuse, then this on I'll look buster. That's the second time you pull
- 16:07a gun on me to day you will leave in the morrow now and I'll
- 16:12really know that gun. Estimate yourself, get over the Valentine when you make
- 16:21you are you George? In just a moment, will return to tonight's adventure
- 16:48of George Valentine. But first a question. What happens when you put your
- 16:52foot down on the accelerator you feel a surge of power, you sail forward
- 16:57smoothly and flessly. Or has a one feature gasoline got your car acting old
- 17:03before its time? Remember the field behind the wheel depends a lot on what's
- 17:08in the tank. So if habit has you buying a one feature gas that's
- 17:12robbing you of real driving pleasure, then shift over now to the gasoline with
- 17:17all eight Chevron Supreme. Any gasoline can be made to stress one feature at
- 17:22the expense of others. Chevern Supreme gasoline gives you not one, not two,
- 17:26but all eight high performance qualities in correct balance, full power, quick
- 17:33starting, fast warm up at a knock vy porlock prevention area, blending,
- 17:38smooth acceleration, and economy mileage are all yours in every gallon of Chevern Supreme.
- 17:45Stop in soon and say fill her up with Chevern Supreme Gasoline at any
- 17:49standard station or independent Chevron gas station where they say and mean we take better
- 17:56care of your car. And now'll back to tonight's adventure of George Valentine.
- 18:18You're hired by a woman who believes her husband is in danger because, as
- 18:23an ex employee of the Justice Department who lost his job because of communist ideas,
- 18:29he has become involved with an organization on a South Pacific island known as
- 18:33the Group. You're a man doesn't seem willing to cooperate, and when he's
- 18:37left your hotel room, another character appears to order you off the island and
- 18:41impress his order with a knockout punch. If your name is George Valentine,
- 18:47you come too with a familiar voice in your ear. George, George Darling?
- 18:51Would happened? Where did you come from? Could Craig do this to
- 18:56you? Darling? I heread voice? Is it? Oh no, no,
- 19:00no, Craig didn't do it. It was that goon boy. I
- 19:02please makes sense to well, I'm trying to, Angela. I'm trying to
- 19:06I should have used my right instead of oh hey, wait a minute,
- 19:10would you please lie so? George did you get up cigarette box? Cigarette?
- 19:14I don't want a cigarette. Hey, throw the catch on that French
- 19:18door to the balcony, Angela, Yeah, yeah, sure. At least
- 19:22he didn't get this polar drags for your brooks. See that's better. Okay,
- 19:30now let's see. Don't you think that? Listen to this. If
- 19:34anything should happen to me, please take possession of very important information hidden in
- 19:38my room. The instruction will be sufficient to guide you in its use.
- 19:42Use great caution, grantoff, and the others will try to take it from
- 19:45you. I still hope to see you when the job is done. Craig,
- 19:49Well, what does that mean? That's what I'm wondering. If it's
- 19:52what I think it is, Missus Craig had real reason for worrying about her
- 19:56husband. I don't think I quite follow your George. That's probably because I
- 19:59don't quite follow myself, I guess, but it's just a hunch. Come
- 20:02on, let's get out of here, Darling. Where we going to the
- 20:03airport? I am there, don't have to this trip. I just want
- 20:07a little information information about why Fanily Craig. I don't know hold of trust
- 20:11in this place, but I think we'll take a chance on the boys at
- 20:14the airline. Oh hello, mister lads, that's the same little man who
- 20:32drove us to the hotel. I must be. I can't see him yet,
- 20:33but I couldn't mistake that voice. What's he doing here this time of
- 20:37night watching us? Probably you are out late, mister. Yeah that's right.
- 20:42I know you make arrangement to leave on the plane tomorrow morning. Yeah,
- 20:48that's right too, I got maybe I had. Oh, I think
- 20:52I can manage. All right, Leon, you get in the carriage and
- 20:55stay with him brook see he can drive us back to the hotel. All
- 21:00right, go ahead, be right back. Hello, wake up, wake
- 21:15up, Come on, would your man? What is it? You're the
- 21:18radio operator at this airport? Radio? Yeah, yeah, sure, radio
- 21:22operate, ticket agent. All right, I want to send a radiogram.
- 21:25I want you to send it for test a minute, But this is an
- 21:26airport official business only. Now. Look, there's an office in the hotel.
- 21:30You don't trust anybody to send a very important message? Yeah, enough
- 21:37to affect the lives of a lot of people. Oh all right, here
- 21:40are it's all written out for you? Think you can get it through for
- 21:42me? The Department of Justice Washington, DC. That's right, would you
- 21:48do it? Sure? Good, and when you get an answer back,
- 21:52hang on to it until I come back for would you. Hey, this
- 21:56is dynamite, mister Valentine. You'll find the signature at a bout him.
- 22:00And here's something for your trouble. No, no, no, no,
- 22:02so I wouldn't take that. I'll buy yourself a couple of holy skirts to
- 22:04send you a girl. I'll be back in a few hours, and let's
- 22:07hope you've got an answer. Yeah, hello, mister, you got your
- 22:17tickets? Uh? Yeah, surely playing the Youth tomorrow morning, maybe nine
- 22:22o'clock. Yeah sure. Hey. By the way, seen anything of mister
- 22:27Craig tonight, No, mister, not since he come to your room in
- 22:32Hotey. Oh you knew that. Huh. Oh yes, mister. I
- 22:36drive him there huh and back? Oh no, sir, mister Craig,
- 22:41he he walked back. I'll bet oh, Tilly Anne drive us back to
- 22:47the hotel. I'll get some rest, yes, sir, mister George,
- 23:04Yeah, angel getting off to sleep? You around here? Couldn't I go
- 23:08to my room and go to sleep for a while? Oh sure, sure,
- 23:12I'm sorry, just because I have to set up. Doesn't mean that
- 23:15we both have to Why did you have to? Well, I'm going back
- 23:18down to the airport pretty soon. It's been several hours. Washington offices would
- 23:22have been open quite a while. An answer to your radio, that's right.
- 23:27You go ahead and I'll just yeah. Who is it? D you
- 23:33Riley, mister Valentine. Therefore, oh god, okay, wait a second,
- 23:38Hi, Hi, I thought I better bring this to you. Sounded
- 23:41important. Well, good, thanks, Jim. That's all right. Looks
- 23:45like you really did hit dynamite. Well, gotta get back to the radio
- 23:48room. Thanks song Jim. Huh, what did George dynamite? Angel?
- 23:56Like the man said, Now, I'm going to do a little snooping around
- 24:00Stanley Craig's room. You mean we are? Oh, everybody wants to get
- 24:03in the act. Okay, Angel, let's go. George. Why do
- 24:22you suppose Stanley Craig isn't here in his room? Don't know, Angel,
- 24:25unless he's unable to be by reason of death. George, what do you
- 24:29mean? I mean, as Granniff character must have found out what I found
- 24:32out by radio an hour ago. Craig wasn't a member of the group by
- 24:34choice. Books he was a communist. Don't believe everything you've told. He
- 24:40was fired from the Justice Department. Yes, and for a reason because he
- 24:42was a communist. No, because they wanted the group to think he was.
- 24:45How if they've caught on again, George, Well you're enjoying your vote,
- 24:49Chris de Vealentine, gran if you really get around, don't you?
- 24:53I make it my business. Don't know what's going on, my friend?
- 24:56Come on, So a smart young man who thinks he can take matters in
- 25:02his own hands. Hey, how wrong you are? Yeah, yeah,
- 25:06I guess you're right, Granna. I suppose we'd better take your advice instead.
- 25:11Huh that plane out tomorrow morning. I'm afraid you are wrong about that,
- 25:14Valentine. I don't think you will need to make a reservation, George.
- 25:18What does he mean? Anna? You are quite a depth at using
- 25:22a gun, are you not? Yes? Why do you ask me to
- 25:26do this? I am asking you to do nothing, Anna, except to
- 25:30keep a gun on these people. I'm going to the group. We will
- 25:33decide what to do with them, and Craig, you won't be long.
- 25:38I will be back in an hour. You will watch them. Well,
- 25:41I don't here, Grant if we haven't done anything. You know, we
- 25:44don't even know anything. You can't do this, I can't. You can
- 25:48see there might be an accident, you know those I say, anna watch
- 25:52them carefully. I will be back on an hour, George, George,
- 25:57what are they gonna do? Tell us? I guess guys like grantite play
- 26:03for keeps hearing. Yet I'm sure he is all right. Then let's have
- 26:07it. Where's Craig? He's lucked in the back room here? Can you
- 26:10get him on? Yes? Where are his papers? Where are they?
- 26:14Anna? Under that kind of go ug under the chair? This is fairly
- 26:18large. I figured that under this chair over here. Yet see what you
- 26:22mean? But Fanna, I don't understand why. Let's get Craig and wave
- 26:27here as fast as we can. And you're doing a very blase thing.
- 26:30You're taking valuable papers. We're releasing. Mister Clay doesn't have to be so
- 26:34brave. If we work fans, you'll never get away with it. You
- 26:37forget we are on an island. There's no way to escape. He took
- 26:40care of that. There are a couple of planes for charter out of the
- 26:41air. What you know, George, when did you do that? When
- 26:44I was down there earlier. I just thought it was a chance worth taking.
- 26:47Do you think Granite will be away for an hour? Almost? All
- 26:48right? Which way to Craig? This way? Come with me here?
- 26:56This is where I'm not mister Varine? What are you doing here? Told
- 27:03me to stay here? He did not trust anyone, even you. Anna
- 27:07get away from the tour buster? Oh no, mister, I started guard
- 27:11at this door, and you will see I have a gun. Yeah,
- 27:15yeah, you're right. Luckily on this much money mean anything to you?
- 27:21Who amount of money would make me betray the group? Mister val Then maybe
- 27:26that's what? All right? And I get his gun, he'll be sleeping
- 27:30for a while, Craig, you and there, Yes, Valentine, that's
- 27:34right. Come on, we've all got reservations on a plane Fatahiti. How
- 27:38did you know that I'm a time to talk in a plane? Angel,
- 27:41Let's go. Here's the easiest way I know to keep your tires safe.

- 28:45these papers. Yeah sure, Craig ahead, come on. We ought to
- 28:48be in Sahiti and a bottle? Noah, George, how did you have
- 28:56the idea that Anna would be with us? All? Very simple? Versible?
- 29:00She winked at me, she did, But the first time I saw
- 29:03her, I guess she knew I was a phony all along. Oh well,
- 29:10I don't think you're a phony, Darling. Goods than sitting you could
- 29:15wink at me? Oh sure, how's this like it? Okay, I'll
- 29:22do it again tomorrow. I'll just sit back and relax. We've had a
- 29:26very busy day, George. Tonight's transcribed adventure of George Valentine has been brought

- 29:55stations and standard stations throughout the West. Robert Bailey is starting as George,

- 30:04and directed by Kenneth Webb. Ted DiCorcia was heard as grannif Byron Kine as
- 30:08Leon, Sing, Tom McKee as Dan and Gene Bates as Anna. The
- 30:14music was composed and presented by Eddie Dunsteader your announcer John Heaston. Listen again
- 30:19next week, same time, same station to Let George Do It. Let
- 30:26George Do It, as heard overseas through the worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces
- 30:30Radio Service. This is the mutual broadcasting system. Welcome back well. I
- 30:44love the Jimmy Duranty reference. Of course, everybody wants to get into the
- 30:48act was one of Duranty's signature lines, and thus we conclude another episode of
- 30:56Let George Do It featuring George Valentine, freelance secret agent. This is somewhat
- 31:04unique, and when you think about Let George Do It, it's probably one
- 31:08of the very interesting things about the series, as well as one of the
- 31:14things that can make it harder for people to grasp the show because it's had
- 31:21the same you know, it had the same start right from the start,
- 31:25but throughout the series we've seen it take on a number of formats. He
- 31:30had a sitcom kind of beginning, and detective comedy type stories complete with a
- 31:38laugh track in the first few episodes of the series. Then we have just
- 31:45more a lot of episodes that are kind of almost homes like stories of deduction
- 31:52and problem solving. And then we have some that her somewhat violent episodes like
- 32:00the pink Hurst very similar to kind of hard boiled detective shows. And now
- 32:07we have Let George do It kind of semi regularly getting into espionage and counter
- 32:15espionage and cloak and Dagger. That means the series offers a wide variety of
- 32:20programs. You never quite know what you're going to get with just any give
- 32:25an episode to Let George do It. But that also makes a challenge.
- 32:30I think that there's a lot of people who like some dependability. You turn
- 32:36on an episode of say Philip Marlowe or or The Thin Man, you kind
- 32:42of know what to expect let George do it, you don't, and that
- 32:45I think is both the charm of the series for many people as well as
- 32:51its downfall for others. All right, well, that'll actually do it for
- 32:54today. Join us back here tomorrow for Sherlock Holmes will be upping up the
- 33:00Elusive Agent storyline, and then join us back here on when next Wednesday for
- 33:05let George stood. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at
