- 1:26Speaker 6: I'm Brian and this week I'm coming to you live
- 1:28Speaker 6: via digital recording.
- 1:29Speaker 1: From the outskirts of Gallery K here in Louisville. There
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm joined by my guest co-host for this week's episode,
- 1:57Speaker 1: comedian Ian Douglas Cherry. In fact, let's join Ian right
- 2:01Speaker 1: now as we get to know a little more about
- 2:02Speaker 1: him and his motivations for choosing this week's movie.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Outside in the night, outside in the day.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Looking back on a track, gonna do it my way.
- 2:16Speaker 1: All right, so we are here with Ian. I guess
- 2:19Speaker 1: go ahead and give people a little intro to you.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Where did you come from?
- 2:24Speaker 3: I'm originally from Omaha, Nebraska, where 311's from.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Is that the big plug at this point?
- 2:33Speaker 3: That was one of them, where people would be like, oh,
- 2:34Speaker 3: that's where 311's from. Also, Malcolm X, but more people
- 2:38Speaker 3: bring up 311. Or Marlon Brando. This is a movie podcast,
- 2:42Speaker 3: so Marlon Brando.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We just had someone reference his birthplace and name it
- 2:47Speaker 1: as someone else. But we won't go into that.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I will go on Wikipedia right now. Born in Omaha.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Maybe he grew up somewhere else.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Don't argue with Yafit Kodo.
- 2:57Speaker 3: That's the recurring theme for Omaha, though, is people were
- 3:00Speaker 3: born there, but then they left immediately.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 1: We have a little of that.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And then grew up somewhere else.
- 3:05Speaker 1: All the successful people that came from our town here
- 3:08Speaker 1: very quickly was like, well, I mean... I can actually
- 3:11Speaker 1: do stuff out there. How fast can I escape from
- 3:15Speaker 1: this place?
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 3: But, uh, that's where I started doing stuff. And now
- 3:20Speaker 3: I live in Denver, Colorado, and I've been there for
- 3:23Speaker 3: over a year, which it's a great change of scenery.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Have you kind of bounced from one place to another
- 3:29Speaker 1: over the years?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I was in Atlanta for a couple years before
- 3:33Speaker 3: moving to Denver.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Seems like that happens a lot with comics. Does that
- 3:37Speaker 1: come with the territory?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah, because I was in bands before that. So it
- 3:43Speaker 3: was a lot of you go to all these different
- 3:45Speaker 3: places and then you just kind of get really excited
- 3:47Speaker 3: about a certain place and be like, why not? I'll
- 3:49Speaker 3: go live in Atlanta for a while.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Stick around here for a while.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, right now I want to move to St. Augustine,
- 3:54Speaker 3: Florida and just live on the beach and be a
- 3:57Speaker 3: beach creep forever. That's my big dream.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Jumping ahead, I just want to move to Hawaii. We'll
- 4:04Speaker 1: get back to that later. Aloha. So I guess how
- 4:08Speaker 1: early on, so you said bands, was music like your
- 4:11Speaker 1: first entry into performing?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yep, since I was 15 to about 25, I was
- 4:18Speaker 3: in bands. Nothing real successful. But it was fun. We
- 4:23Speaker 3: did a little touring and stuff. So it was kind
- 4:25Speaker 3: of like an introduction to then touring for comedy, which
- 4:28Speaker 3: is a million times easier. Yeah. No equipment. Usually one
- 4:33Speaker 3: or two guys.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Show up with a microphone. Yep. It's pretty easy. It's
- 4:37Speaker 1: interesting watching the chores, how they happen, and different strategies
- 4:43Speaker 1: that comedians kind of approach it with.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Everybody has kind of a different take on how they...
- 4:49Speaker 1: Get the career going.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It's interesting.
- 4:51Speaker 3: And I just, since I was in punk bands, everything
- 4:53Speaker 3: I do now is just very DIY and like, you know.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Which, again, I think is kind of why there's been,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and I was just talking earlier inside, I was just,
- 5:01Speaker 1: we were talking about how the shift in the last
- 5:04Speaker 1: five years, it's like, you guys have been touring since,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know, forever, but like, there's all of a sudden,
- 5:11Speaker 1: especially in all these little towns, there's this big push
- 5:14Speaker 1: in the last five years and it's very indie and
- 5:16Speaker 1: it's very like, crowd-supported, almost more so than the comics.
- 5:20Speaker 1: The comics are like, wait, I have to go to
- 5:22Speaker 1: your town? Okay, I guess so. I didn't know there
- 5:24Speaker 1: was a town here, but you guys are really into
- 5:26Speaker 1: those comedies.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah, there's cool DIY scenes all over the place, everywhere.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Every state usually has something going on that's really cool.
- 5:35Speaker 6: It's awesome.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Again, I wasn't sure we were going to get that.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Everything became very I don't know. It sort of fell
- 5:42Speaker 1: away after the death of the 80s run. And mid-90s
- 5:47Speaker 1: comedy just sort of took a nosedive.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It was the handful of guys still fighting it out there.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Seeing it sort of make the comeback that it has.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And again, it got super corporate and commercialized and homogenized.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Oh, definitely.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So watching it be the punk rock DIY thing that
- 6:05Speaker 1: it is now is kind of awesome.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 6:08Speaker 3: It's real chill.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So what, I don't know, was there a specific thing
- 6:13Speaker 1: that made you want to change teams? Just as far
- 6:16Speaker 1: as music to comedy, I guess you could take.
- 6:18Speaker 3: That a different way. Well, basically, like I quit being
- 6:20Speaker 3: in bands when I moved to Atlanta. Yeah. I was
- 6:23Speaker 3: just there and I wasn't really doing anything. I was
- 6:25Speaker 3: just living in Atlanta and then moved back and I
- 6:29Speaker 3: was just really into like sketch comedy, like Mr. Show
- 6:32Speaker 3: and like Monty Python. And that was just always my
- 6:35Speaker 3: favorite was like sketch comedy.
- 6:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So initially, I started doing sketch because I thought stand-up
- 6:40Speaker 3: was awful. I thought stand-up was, because in Nebraska, there
- 6:44Speaker 3: was one comedy club, a Funny Bone, like out way
- 6:48Speaker 3: west of town.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 3: And the comics they would bring in were just terrible.
- 6:52Speaker 3: So I had no idea. I thought stand-up comedy was
- 6:53Speaker 3: just like the shittiest and hypnotist. I thought it was
- 6:56Speaker 3: stand-up and hypnotism were like the main thing. And I
- 6:59Speaker 3: was like.
- 7:00Speaker 1: A lot of that.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Even when, again, in that midsection here, we had one
- 7:04Speaker 1: comedy club.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I didn't go to it for years because they really like,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I would just see the poster and be like, Oh,
- 7:09Speaker 1: I don't want to see that guy. That shot says
- 7:12Speaker 1: all I need to know about that comedy. I'm like, no,
- 7:15Speaker 1: thank you. Like, so it, yeah, I get it. It was,
- 7:18Speaker 1: it was kind of thin in the, in between cities.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Chicago and LA had a good scene, but it was,
- 7:25Speaker 1: it was kind of hard for comedy in the rest
- 7:27Speaker 1: of the country.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah. So I was in a sketch group for a
- 7:30Speaker 3: couple of years that did like a lot of video stuff.
- 7:33Speaker 3: that got semi-popular, and then two of the guys in
- 7:36Speaker 3: that group started going to open mics and doing stand-up,
- 7:39Speaker 3: and I was like, oh, nerds. Like, that's stupid. And
- 7:41Speaker 3: then I heard Kyle Kinane's album, Death of the Party,
- 7:46Speaker 3: and it blew my mind, because I was like, holy shit,
- 7:48Speaker 3: this is.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You can do something useful with that microphone.
- 7:51Speaker 3: It was like punk rock comedy, where it was just like,
- 7:54Speaker 3: holy shit, I can actually relate to this, and I
- 7:56Speaker 3: enjoy this. So then after that, I started doing stand-up,
- 8:00Speaker 3: and that was like six years ago, about? Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 1: See, I was kind of the other way. I've always
- 8:06Speaker 1: loved stand-up. Again, it was usually the bigger names back then.
- 8:10Speaker 1: But then, like, I don't know. Like, a lot of
- 8:12Speaker 1: sketch didn't work for me. So, I don't know. Did
- 8:16Speaker 1: you find something in that performance that's totally different than,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, what you're doing stand-up-wise? Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And, like, because the thing I realized is I loved
- 8:26Speaker 3: sketch comedy, but I hated acting. I did not like
- 8:29Speaker 3: to play like characters. So a lot of our sketches
- 8:31Speaker 3: were just like shitty dudes being shitty dudes. Cause it
- 8:34Speaker 3: was like, ah, that's easy. It's going to be about
- 8:37Speaker 3: getting drunk and like talking shit. Oh, okay. That's super hard. Wow.
- 8:42Speaker 3: What a stretch.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Was it like plotted out sketch or was it more improv?
- 8:46Speaker 3: Some of it. We had, we had, it was, I
- 8:49Speaker 3: didn't write, I don't like to write scripts and stuff.
- 8:51Speaker 3: So it was a little improv based, but like mostly
- 8:55Speaker 3: it was, we had a green screen and, So a
- 8:58Speaker 3: lot of it was just us green screen. We had
- 9:00Speaker 3: a really popular series that I deleted all of it
- 9:02Speaker 3: off the internet because I realized, like, we said some
- 9:05Speaker 3: of the most, like, shitty, insensitive, terrible things. I was like,
- 9:09Speaker 3: this can't, you can't keep, but it was us over
- 9:11Speaker 3: music videos. And then it was us just making fun of, like, popular, like,
- 9:15Speaker 3: current music videos and, like, Morrissey and stuff like that.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You almost can't lose with that.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 1: That's a time-honored tradition of making fun of videos.
- 9:22Speaker 3: And then we have a video that's called Cash for
- 9:24Speaker 3: Cats that still exists on the internet. And then, It
- 9:28Speaker 3: got ripped off almost verbatim by a Canadian sketch TV show.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Canadian.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Like years after the fact. It was like, that's weird.
- 9:35Speaker 3: We just made a dumb video about selling your cat.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Because it was like cash for gold, but instead it
- 9:41Speaker 3: was cash for cats.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Cash for cats. Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But that, you know, it was fun. Then I still
- 9:45Speaker 3: toy around with wanting to do sketch stuff because, you know,
- 9:49Speaker 3: you're just always coming up with random ideas where it'd
- 9:52Speaker 3: be like, that'd be a hilarious video.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Again, I think I think the more scripted sketch sometimes
- 9:59Speaker 1: can be really good. I think I, I have more
- 10:01Speaker 1: issues with improv. That's like bad improv.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah. There's so much.
- 10:04Speaker 1: There's a lot of that. Again, in that same five
- 10:06Speaker 1: year span, a lot of improv has popped up too.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Because you see the, the, successful wins, you know, again,
- 10:13Speaker 1: in Chicago and LA, there's a huge fan base for that.
- 10:16Speaker 1: But then like the wannabe guys out there, like some
- 10:19Speaker 1: of that stuff is painful.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Oh, the majority.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's like that, that you got to go
- 10:24Speaker 1: in with your guard up on some of that. Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Improv is a, uh, it's like Scientology. It's where you
- 10:29Speaker 3: buy in and you have to pay money and then
- 10:31Speaker 3: you achieve levels. And then you're like, now I'm a,
- 10:35Speaker 3: good at this and it's like are you are you
- 10:37Speaker 3: because you've spent the most money like that's how you
- 10:39Speaker 3: get good at.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Based on the rest of us watching it no yeah just.
- 10:44Speaker 3: A bunch of dudes goofing around yeah i could talk
- 10:49Speaker 3: shit about improv all day.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I'm okay with that hell yeah again if you're doing
- 10:55Speaker 1: impressive you know writing you come up with solid stuff
- 10:58Speaker 1: even if you're kind of improvving off of premise but
- 11:00Speaker 1: like that give me an occupation oh my god i've
- 11:04Speaker 1: Like some of that's just so painful.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Then on the same token, there's a lot of terrible standoff.
- 11:09Speaker 1: That's true too. It's another one. Like it is one
- 11:11Speaker 1: of those, like I love going to support the independent
- 11:14Speaker 1: comedy shows. I keep coming to gallery K here and like,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I try to, I try to support what I can,
- 11:18Speaker 1: but at the same time, it's like, you almost got
- 11:21Speaker 1: to like know what you're getting yourself into. Like there's,
- 11:24Speaker 1: you don't want to be there all night with everybody,
- 11:27Speaker 1: you know, just kind of bringing terrible stuff. It's like,
- 11:30Speaker 1: There's you got to find the good, good comics and
- 11:32Speaker 1: stick with them. And occasionally you'll get a good opener
- 11:35Speaker 1: and you're like, you can kind of stumble into some
- 11:36Speaker 1: really good people.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. As long as you treat it like music.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Or if you're like, you know, you see a cool band,
- 11:43Speaker 3: you kind of follow them as they get better and whatever.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Instead of just like I can't remember who was I
- 11:49Speaker 3: think it was Nick Vatterot. We were at a barbecue
- 11:50Speaker 3: in Atlanta at a festival. And they were talking about
- 11:53Speaker 3: how so many people will walk into a comedy show,
- 11:55Speaker 3: they'll just see the word comedy and be like, oh,
- 11:57Speaker 3: that'll match my expectations. And they just walk right in.
- 12:00Speaker 3: That's trouble. Instead of researching beforehand.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that's trouble.
- 12:02Speaker 3: And actually being like, okay, who's this person? Maybe I'll
- 12:04Speaker 3: watch a video of them and see if I like
- 12:06Speaker 3: them before I go.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:07Speaker 3: But there's a lot of that. And it's not like
- 12:09Speaker 3: you'd see like music. Oh, I like music. I will
- 12:12Speaker 3: totally enjoy whatever music this is and just walk in.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I mean, that's, you know. Metal to jazz.
- 12:18Speaker 3: You're dealing with very different areas. It could be anything.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Quite a spectrum there.
- 12:22Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Comedy is kind of the same way.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you definitely have to research comedians and make sure
- 12:26Speaker 3: they're not idiots.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I completely agree. People in general, but especially if you're
- 12:33Speaker 1: going to sit there and watch them perform.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 3: That's trouble. Absolutely. It's the golden rule now. Definitely. Watch
- 12:39Speaker 3: YouTube videos.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And in that vein, that's kind of how I came
- 12:43Speaker 1: upon you. I've been watching tons of comedians and like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I think what led to this was within a few minutes, again,
- 12:51Speaker 1: you had some great material anyway, but within a 10,
- 12:54Speaker 1: 12 minute span, you referenced Project X and Conan the Destroyer.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I'm like, well... I think we need to sit down
- 13:03Speaker 1: and talk. I think, I think, I think he's on board.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Cause I'm just the fact that anybody knows, and we're
- 13:08Speaker 1: not talking that the kids party movie that just came
- 13:10Speaker 1: out a few years ago, because.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I was like, as soon as.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I saw that trailer, I was like, there's already a
- 13:16Speaker 1: project X.
- 13:16Speaker 3: You can call it that.
- 13:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Call it something else.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I was like, does that even match that movie?
- 13:21Speaker 1: I don't know. I haven't watched that either, but I'm
- 13:23Speaker 1: just like, yeah, the, the Matthew Broderick and monkeys, like
- 13:26Speaker 1: you can't, anybody who bothered to watch that and even
- 13:29Speaker 1: more so remember it.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Like, Flying planes.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I'm just all about references. As many 80s, 90s references
- 13:37Speaker 3: I can jam in.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But I think that's what's awesome. If you hit, again,
- 13:41Speaker 1: because anybody can reference the big stuff. And sometimes it works.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I do it all the time. But when you nail
- 13:47Speaker 1: something obscure and that one geek like me goes, did
- 13:50Speaker 1: he just reference flying planes with monkeys? Holy shit. If
- 13:54Speaker 1: you get the one guy out there that's like, whoa, wait,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I know that.
- 13:57Speaker 3: I love that. That's one of my favorite things. And
- 14:00Speaker 3: I usually will cater it. Like if we do stand-up
- 14:04Speaker 3: at wrestling shows, there's a show in Denver called Lucha
- 14:06Speaker 3: Libre and Laughs where there's comics between the matches. And
- 14:09Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm going to do so many wrestling references.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Or like at Fest in Gainesville where we're going next weekend,
- 14:15Speaker 3: I'm going to do so many punk rock references. I'm
- 14:17Speaker 3: just going to make it ridiculous where eventually somebody's going
- 14:20Speaker 3: to be like, holy shit.
- 14:21Speaker 1: You've got a good range here.
- 14:23Speaker 3: You can do music.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You can do wrestling. Yep.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I'm a big movie dude. Yeah. just spend a lot
- 14:28Speaker 3: of time looking at stuff.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I mean again that's going into this is kind of
- 14:33Speaker 1: the one field that you can kind of use all
- 14:36Speaker 1: of your yeah what most people would say wasting time
- 14:39Speaker 1: all of your years of like watching and just consuming
- 14:42Speaker 1: mass pop culture kind of stuff yeah it's great you
- 14:45Speaker 1: can turn it into something yeah that's that's awesome for
- 14:48Speaker 1: you I'm doing research mom shut up leave me alone.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I'm on Netflix all the time because I need material.
- 14:55Speaker 1: That's material Research. Research and development. I'm writing this off
- 15:01Speaker 1: at the end of the year.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Netflix subscription.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Write that off. There you go.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Well, I have a general question that is probably going
- 15:12Speaker 1: to lead into the movie. I guess, first off, what
- 15:16Speaker 1: was your movie go-to's when you were coming up? Was
- 15:19Speaker 1: it comedy or was it just kind of everything?
- 15:21Speaker 3: I was really into... Because I remember... which this is
- 15:27Speaker 3: going to show my age, but Laserdiscs. Do you remember Laserdiscs?
- 15:31Speaker 1: I have several. I've been moving from one place to
- 15:34Speaker 1: another lately, and I have three huge and ridiculously heavy
- 15:38Speaker 1: when you put them all in. They're so heavy. I
- 15:40Speaker 1: have three big boxes of Laserdiscs.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I'm a dork. In fact, I hooked mine up and
- 15:46Speaker 1: watched because I was listening to a show that was
- 15:49Speaker 1: talking about I'm a geek. I was watching Return of
- 15:51Speaker 1: the Jedi. And I was like, man, I haven't seen
- 15:53Speaker 1: the Sarlacc foot scene in years. I hooked up my
- 15:57Speaker 1: Laserdisc player.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Fire up the Laserdisc.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Still works. Well, again, being the geek that I am,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I didn't buy it when they started putting out those
- 16:04Speaker 1: bullshit versions. So I have the Laserdisc that is the
- 16:07Speaker 1: last widescreen, unedited, undoctored up by Lucas. I'm like, I
- 16:12Speaker 1: want to watch it the right way. Screw you, Lucas.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, but my grandma and grandpa had a Laserdisc player,
- 16:20Speaker 3: and they only had three movies. And so my parents
- 16:23Speaker 3: would leave me at my grandparents. And the three movies,
- 16:26Speaker 3: it's the weirdest combination. The first one, Flash Gordon. Nice.
- 16:31Speaker 1: That's going to warp a kid's mind. Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 3: So it's all right. I'm watching Flash Gordon with the
- 16:35Speaker 3: Killer Queen soundtrack.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 3: All the weird.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Fancy outfits.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Just a terrifying movie for a kid.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Weird sets.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Hawkmen and everything.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 3: The second movie, Slapshot.
- 16:47Speaker 1: All right, comedy classic there.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Hockey and swearing.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Yeah, not really appropriate for kids, but then everything we
- 16:54Speaker 1: watched at that point wasn't really. Watch the Bad News Bears.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Is that appropriate for kids? No, but it's starring kids.
- 17:01Speaker 1: They just let us watch whatever the hell we wanted
- 17:02Speaker 1: when we were kids.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the third, I might mess this up
- 17:05Speaker 3: because I rarely watched it. It was Olivia Newton-John starring in,
- 17:09Speaker 3: I believe, the movie Xanadu.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. A classic in its own right.
- 17:14Speaker 3: My sister was more into that, but I was just like,
- 17:16Speaker 3: I'm going to watch this hockey movie and this space movie.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Over and over. Yeah, my cousin was really into Xanadu
- 17:23Speaker 1: and Grease and the whole Olivia Newton-John run there. And
- 17:26Speaker 1: I remember she watched it a lot, and I saw
- 17:28Speaker 1: bits and pieces. And it was on this past year.
- 17:30Speaker 1: It was just on cable one day. And I stopped
- 17:32Speaker 1: and went, I recognized it immediately, but I hadn't watched
- 17:35Speaker 1: it since then. I'm like, what the hell? hell is
- 17:38Speaker 1: going on it is like how they can claim that
- 17:42Speaker 1: they weren't on massive amounts of drugs oh yeah i
- 17:45Speaker 1: i don't know because it doesn't make any real sense
- 17:49Speaker 1: and like there's weird stuff going on so again now
- 17:52Speaker 1: i'm gonna have to like devote an entire episode to that.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yeah it's i need to.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Decode what's going on in this thing.
- 17:57Speaker 3: But yeah i was real big in those and then
- 18:00Speaker 3: later i was really into dark crystal and labyrinth because
- 18:04Speaker 3: i just love i love jim henson and I'm on
- 18:06Speaker 3: board with that.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I loved The Muppet Show growing up, but then I liked,
- 18:11Speaker 1: because I like, and it's funny that it's sort of
- 18:13Speaker 1: coming back around now, but I liked how dark it got,
- 18:16Speaker 1: specifically Dark Crystal. Everybody else is sort of more Team Labyrinth,
- 18:21Speaker 1: but I'm like, that's all singing and dancing. They're very,
- 18:24Speaker 1: very different. Dark Crystal, there's no bit to it. It's
- 18:29Speaker 1: not like they're not doing musicals, musical numbers. It's not.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Anything else, it's.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Just a really, really dark story. It's just terrifying.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And they never let up. They suck out puppet souls. Like,
- 18:42Speaker 1: they are killing main characters by the end of it.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So I'm just like, it was so. Like, I think
- 18:48Speaker 1: I love that. Again, the creepy character that I was.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Still am.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I was just like, I was so drawn to that.
- 18:54Speaker 1: The fact that it was puppets. And they were huge, massive.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Those giant ones crawling around. Like, those things still to
- 19:01Speaker 1: this day disturb me.
- 19:02Speaker 3: They have one of the Skeksis at the Atlanta Puppetry Museum.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And I saw it. It's amazing. taller than me and
- 19:07Speaker 3: just looming it's huge.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Have you heard this is one I've heard in just
- 19:11Speaker 1: the last few years and again it makes me love
- 19:13Speaker 1: Henson even more for the weird guy that he was
- 19:16Speaker 1: yeah he wanted to do it all in their own
- 19:19Speaker 1: language Oh, yeah, yeah. And there was... And I think
- 19:22Speaker 1: he did it that way, and then later they went
- 19:24Speaker 1: back and reshot it and dubbed stuff in. I think
- 19:26Speaker 1: on the.
- 19:26Speaker 3: There's, like, DVD extras where it's... There's... Instead of having
- 19:29Speaker 3: it in English, it's... I mean.
- 19:30Speaker 1: It's crazy and creepy and up and down. Can you
- 19:33Speaker 1: imagine a good 90 minutes of just nonsense words and
- 19:36Speaker 1: the dark imagery? I'm just like.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Terrifying vulture people. How would this.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Not warp children's minds?
- 19:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 3: It's like, oh, my God. It's amazing, because it's the
- 19:45Speaker 3: guy that made the Muppets, and it's just fun, friendly stuff,
- 19:49Speaker 3: and then just like, here's the darkest shit anyone can
- 19:52Speaker 3: think of.
- 19:53Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say. That's kind of
- 19:54Speaker 1: what I like in the new turn. Have you seen
- 19:56Speaker 1: the new Muppet show?
- 19:57Speaker 3: I've only seen a couple of episodes. I saw a
- 19:59Speaker 3: couple episodes.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I like that. It's like, it's not like the fact
- 20:03Speaker 1: that there's relationship problems. I'm like, I kind of love that. Like,
- 20:08Speaker 1: If it was just like, oh, here we are again,
- 20:09Speaker 1: the same set little situation, Piggy and Kermit. The fact
- 20:13Speaker 1: that they bothered to make it real enough that we
- 20:17Speaker 1: know she's a diva anyway, but now she's a full-on
- 20:19Speaker 1: late-night talk show diva. They've broken up. There's so much
- 20:24Speaker 1: weird chemistry going on between the rest of the cast,
- 20:29Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is amazing. I need to finish
- 20:32Speaker 1: watching the rest of them because it's just those first
- 20:34Speaker 1: couple I saw, I'm like, I like that whoever's picked
- 20:38Speaker 1: it up now and taken over.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Because I don't even know if Brian's still doing it.
- 20:42Speaker 1: One of the kids died, too, I know.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 1: They're running out of Henson. Oh, man. The best thing
- 20:48Speaker 1: he did was sell it to Disney because at least
- 20:50Speaker 1: they seem like they know what they're doing with stuff now.
- 20:51Speaker 1: They give it to the right people.
- 20:54Speaker 3: There's two knocks that I've heard on the new Muppet show,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and the first one was that it's ripping off 30 Rock,
- 21:00Speaker 3: which it's like, no, 30 Rock was ripping off the
- 21:02Speaker 3: Muppet show.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 3: It was like Muppet show, but with humans.
- 21:06Speaker 1: It's very openly ripping off The Office because they did
- 21:09Speaker 1: the promo and they were making fun of the fact
- 21:11Speaker 1: that they're doing The Office.
- 21:13Speaker 3: The interview style?
- 21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, talking to the camera.
- 21:17Speaker 3: The other one is that it's too adult. And it's like, well,
- 21:20Speaker 3: the people that liked The Muppets are now adults.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Well, even then, if you go back and watch, it
- 21:25Speaker 1: really was like a weird variety show where we were
- 21:27Speaker 1: focusing more behind the scenes than what was going on.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Like you would... see them walk out and go on
- 21:32Speaker 1: stage and you stayed backstage and watch Kermit and Scooter
- 21:35Speaker 1: figure stuff out. I'm like, it really wasn't a kid's show.
- 21:40Speaker 1: It's the way tense and stuff always was. It was
- 21:42Speaker 1: like kid friendly, but it was smart enough to be
- 21:45Speaker 1: for adults. And like, I think that's, yeah, that's one
- 21:48Speaker 1: of the best things about it. And I'm glad that
- 21:50Speaker 1: it's kind of continuing down that road. So we veered
- 21:53Speaker 1: off into Muppets, but I guess that will come back
- 21:55Speaker 1: into play once again in a minute here.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 9: How much do you want.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Not to start?
- 22:13Speaker 7: That's time to get things started on.
- 22:17Speaker 5: The most sensational, inspirational, It's intermission time.

- 23:32Speaker 1: It's an adventure. You stole an airplane from the Air Force.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You had a girl and an open bottle of champagne
- 23:38Speaker 1: in the cockpit.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm through.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I'm dead. I'm done.
- 23:43Speaker 4: When Jimmy Garrett joined the Air Force, he knew he'd
- 23:45Speaker 4: learn about leadership.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So why didn't you go to the Air Force Academy?
- 23:48Speaker 2: My instructors felt that I was spending too much time
- 23:51Speaker 2: concentrating on football.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Football.
- 23:53Speaker 3: I ran a betting pool. He'd meet interesting people.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Can I buy you a drink? He'd work with space
- 24:01Speaker 1: age technology.
- 24:02Speaker 5: This is gonna be a.
- 24:03Speaker 7: Whole new experience.
- 24:04Speaker 3: I just hope I'm up to it.
- 24:05Speaker 4: No, not you. After them. These are monkeys. But he
- 24:09Speaker 4: never thought he'd meet anyone like Virgil.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Be a good boy, okay?
- 24:13Speaker 3: Come here.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Be a good little chimp. Friend.
- 24:20Speaker 9: Fast break!
- 24:21Speaker 1: Ready? Dunk it!
- 24:23Speaker 7: Good, good.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Flato forward. That's it.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Come up.
- 24:27Speaker 5: Up.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Up. Go up.
- 24:30Speaker 3: That's right.
- 24:30Speaker 7: Pull it back. That's good.
- 24:31Speaker 3: That's good.
- 24:32Speaker 1: That's a very impressive fly in there, Garrett. Hey, Tim Fieger,
- 24:36Speaker 1: give me five.
- 24:37Speaker 4: It was a top secret project, and only Virgil knew
- 24:40Speaker 4: the truth.
- 24:41Speaker 5: What's he doing?
- 24:42Speaker 4: I don't know, man.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I mean, I've never seen this before.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I don't believe it.
- 24:45Speaker 9: Ow.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Ari.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Ari.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Help.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I think your animal is best qualified for our demonstration.
- 24:58Speaker 4: What's wrong? Virgil.
- 24:59Speaker 3: You have to get him out of here.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Somebody lied to me. What am I supposed to believe?
- 25:03Speaker 3: Listen, they are doing top secret work here. If anybody
- 25:06Speaker 3: knew that I even talked to you, I could be
- 25:07Speaker 3: charged with treason. What is his clearance?
- 25:09Speaker 5: What is your clearance?
- 25:10Speaker 1: How fast can you get him.
- 25:12Speaker 9: Out of here?
- 25:13Speaker 4: There's nothing you can do.
- 25:15Speaker 1: About it, man.
- 25:16Speaker 3: What do you think is.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Going on down that tunnel? Let's get the hell out
- 25:20Speaker 1: of here.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Garrett, what the hell are you doing?
- 25:23Speaker 1: From the creators of War Games, Matthew Broderick, Project X.

- 26:06Speaker 1: Hey, this is Sal Sparks from the Magnum Opus, Dude,
- 26:08Speaker 1: Where's My Car?
- 26:09Speaker 3: And you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 26:13Speaker 6: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Peter, as you know, I love you.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Are you breaking up with me?
- 26:23Speaker 1: We're leading different lives. It's like you're standing on the
- 26:26Speaker 1: dock and I'm in the lake.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Sarah, I swear to God, I'll jump in the lake
- 26:29Speaker 3: like a merman.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Do you want to put some clothes on?
- 26:32Speaker 6: Would you like to pick out the outfit that you
- 26:33Speaker 6: break up with me in?
- 26:36Speaker 4: Sexy crime fighter Sarah Marshall has been spotted cozying up
- 26:40Speaker 4: to singer and notorious Lothario Aldis Snow.
- 26:44Speaker 3: She's dating somebody.
- 26:45Speaker 7: And until I do the same thing, I'm going to
- 26:47Speaker 7: feel like I want to die.
- 26:48Speaker 3: I think that went really well.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Are you crying?
- 26:51Speaker 3: I had sex with this woman who I barely even know.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I'm really scared that I have an STD, doc. Peter,
- 26:56Speaker 3: I'm a pediatrician. Have you noticed you're sitting on a
- 26:58Speaker 3: fire truck? Everywhere I look, I'm reminded of her.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Why don't you go on a vacation?
- 27:04Speaker 6: I could go to Hawaii.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Welcome to Turtle Bay and enjoy your stay.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Peter? What are you doing here?
- 27:13Speaker 3: Came here to murder you. This is a disaster. Go
- 27:18Speaker 3: someplace else. I'm not leaving here. It'll look like I'm
- 27:20Speaker 3: running away.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Wait, why are you whispering?
- 27:22Speaker 6: You're not following them, are you?
- 27:23Speaker 4: Oh, God. Get out of there.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Go to your room. It was the only room available.
- 27:28Speaker 6: I'd like to grab some dinner, please.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Is your girlfriend joining you?
- 27:31Speaker 7: No.
- 27:32Speaker 1: You're just by yourself?
- 27:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 1: You want, like, a magazine or something?
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's going to be boring. I just would be so depressed.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Oi, oi.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Why don't you come over and sit with us?
- 27:40Speaker 3: Did you see her boyfriend?
- 27:41Speaker 1: He is ridiculous. Mr.
- 27:43Speaker 7: Snow, I brought you my demo.
- 27:44Speaker 1: That's me.
- 27:44Speaker 5: I'm all five members of the band.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Come on, you've got to go now.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Sorry.
- 27:49Speaker 3: This break... Get out of your head.
- 27:51Speaker 4: It's really nice out here.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Are you going to jump or what?
- 27:57Speaker 3: I'll jump.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Universal Pictures presents.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Oh, hey.
- 28:01Speaker 6: You're welcome to join us, obviously, if you like.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:04Speaker 5: I have a question for you real quick.
- 28:05Speaker 4: What did you think of my demo?
- 28:06Speaker 1: Did you get it?
- 28:07Speaker 2: I was going to listen to that, but then I
- 28:10Speaker 2: just carried on living my life.
- 28:12Speaker 4: A comedy... You need a hug. Come here.
- 28:15Speaker 1: About getting left behind. You need to get back on
- 28:17Speaker 1: that board.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 28:19Speaker 1: You got coral on your leg. Can you get out
- 28:23Speaker 1: of my leg, please, hotel man?
- 28:27Speaker 4: And coming out ahead.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I think it's good you're getting out there.
- 28:30Speaker 7: I think you need to move just a tiny bit
- 28:31Speaker 7: further away from the microphone.
- 28:32Speaker 3: No closer. Now a little further. Closer.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Oh, I know what you're doing. You stop that.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I don't want to wonder if this is a blunder
- 29:12Speaker 1: I don't want to worry whether we're going to stay
- 29:15Speaker 1: together till we die I don't want to jump in
- 29:18Speaker 1: unless this music's thumping All the dishes rattle in the
- 29:23Speaker 1: cupboards when the elephants.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Arrive I want to love you madly I want to
- 29:31Speaker 4: love you now.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Thank you. So, I guess that's sort of what led
- 29:48Speaker 1: us to this. I was like, you know, we definitely
- 29:50Speaker 1: had some cool movie crossover. So I was like, all right,
- 29:53Speaker 1: what do we want to talk about? So, to get
- 29:56Speaker 1: into our movie here. This week's Sofa Theater feature is
- 29:59Speaker 1: Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The year is 2008. The director, Nicholas Stoller,
- 30:05Speaker 1: And the plot, according to IMDb, devastated Peter takes a
- 30:10Speaker 1: Hawaiian vacation in order to deal with his recent breakup
- 30:14Speaker 1: with the TV star girlfriend, Sarah. Little does he know,
- 30:17Speaker 1: Sarah's traveling to the same resort as her ex, and
- 30:19Speaker 1: she's bringing along her new boyfriend. Spoiler alert. I'm going
- 30:23Speaker 1: to ruin the hell.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Out of this. Spoilers all around.
- 30:26Speaker 1: That was what I was leading to earlier, is like,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I've kind of mentioned this on shows previously. I wanted
- 30:34Speaker 1: to know, growing up, were you also a big comedy fan?
- 30:37Speaker 1: Or in recent years, like in this last 10, 15
- 30:40Speaker 1: year run where there's sort of this new brand of
- 30:43Speaker 1: comedy that's taken off and gotten popular, are you a
- 30:46Speaker 1: big fan of that?
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'm not really a big fan.
- 30:51Speaker 1: See, that's the thing.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I'm not. Comedy movies and comedy stuff, I'm more into
- 30:55Speaker 3: the weird, interesting stuff. And comedy movies are generally just
- 30:59Speaker 3: kind of like the same. Especially lately. As we said,
- 31:07Speaker 3: I love comedy. I love stand-up.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Being the movie fan that I am, I love comedy movies.
- 31:15Speaker 1: People kept referencing recent stuff lately. I was like, nah,
- 31:18Speaker 1: I haven't seen it. I saw the trailer. I don't care.
- 31:21Speaker 1: I started thinking about it. My go-to comedy favorites are
- 31:24Speaker 1: all from 20, 30 years ago.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Nothing recent really.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know that I respond well that
- 31:33Speaker 1: this last wave or two of modern comedy film has
- 31:37Speaker 1: come out. So when you said that, I was like,
- 31:40Speaker 1: oh good, I need to watch this because I hadn't
- 31:42Speaker 1: seen it before. I hadn't gotten around to watching it yet.
- 31:44Speaker 1: So I thought, yeah, this is a good excuse.
- 31:47Speaker 3: There you go.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I wanted to watch it if for no other reason
- 31:50Speaker 1: I am a huge Kristen Bell fan.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I mean, this doesn't really put her in the best situation,
- 31:57Speaker 1: but I mean, Veronica Mars is so damn good. It's
- 32:01Speaker 1: so well written and she's so good on it. So yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 1: I've tried to catch what I can of her, but yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I still hadn't gotten around to it because everything else
- 32:12Speaker 1: didn't seem like stuff I was going to be all
- 32:14Speaker 1: that into. And so that was the thing. I saw
- 32:16Speaker 1: that trailer years ago in 2008 and I was just like, eh,
- 32:21Speaker 1: I feel like everything I'm watching in the trailer, I
- 32:24Speaker 1: kind of get everything that they're going to try to
- 32:26Speaker 1: do in the movie. So then watching it this weekend,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I'm like, Yeah, I was right. I feel like most
- 32:34Speaker 1: of what they're trying to put out there in that two,
- 32:36Speaker 1: three-minute trailer is kind of all you get out of
- 32:39Speaker 1: the movie. I don't know. What is your take on it?
- 32:42Speaker 3: I'm obsessed with that movie. On the surface, it's a
- 32:46Speaker 3: very paint-by-numbers romantic comedy film.
- 32:50Speaker 1: That's kind of why I want to get into it,
- 32:51Speaker 1: because I came away with, I don't dislike it. I
- 32:55Speaker 1: just feel like it's... not doing anything more than what
- 32:58Speaker 1: you would expect it to do.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I think it's kind of like people's favorite albums usually
- 33:05Speaker 3: coincide with something happening in their life and it just
- 33:08Speaker 3: really resonates with you. And that movie just came at
- 33:12Speaker 3: a time where I completely related to the circumstances and
- 33:17Speaker 3: everything in the movie of this guy who's the wonderful girlfriend.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Because the typical is that One of the characters just
- 33:25Speaker 3: has to be straight up shitty and evil.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:28Speaker 3: And so you feel sympathy. But then this movie also
- 33:31Speaker 3: reveals that, yeah, that guy was also an idiot and
- 33:33Speaker 3: just being shitty too.
- 33:34Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Everybody. Where it actually presented both sides kind of.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Everybody. It's kind of both sides for me. It's like
- 33:41Speaker 1: one of the things I took away was of our
- 33:43Speaker 1: four main characters, three of them you don't really like
- 33:47Speaker 1: that much.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And I'm like, other than.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Mila Kunis is the only one who's... Mila Kunis is.
- 33:52Speaker 1: The only one that you're like, no, she's pretty awesome.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I'm on board with her. I'm on board with this girl.
- 33:57Speaker 1: She never really screws anybody over. She's always kind of
- 34:00Speaker 1: a good person.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's kind of interesting to where
- 34:05Speaker 3: it's not black and white. It's a little more gray.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Yeah, on the one hand, it's like I had that
- 34:11Speaker 1: issue with it. I'm like, I don't really like most
- 34:13Speaker 1: of these people. But at the same time, it does
- 34:15Speaker 1: an interesting thing where... they all turn around and sort
- 34:19Speaker 1: of redeem themselves at moments. Not completely, but like by
- 34:24Speaker 1: the end you don't, like even the jackass boyfriend, you're like,
- 34:27Speaker 1: I don't know, I mean he's just, he's a dick,
- 34:30Speaker 1: but like he's not trying to be a dick.
- 34:32Speaker 3: He's just like that.
- 34:34Speaker 1: He is the way he is. She got involved with
- 34:36Speaker 1: him knowing the way he is. Like, you know, it's
- 34:39Speaker 1: like I feel like everybody sort of comes around and
- 34:42Speaker 1: you're like, eh, I guess they're all right.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and I feel like that's a good representation. And
- 34:47Speaker 3: I feel, Because I feel like most of my 20s,
- 34:50Speaker 3: I would view relationships as like, that person was crazy.
- 34:53Speaker 3: I did nothing wrong. I was the hero. I tried
- 34:57Speaker 3: my hardest. They obviously messed it up.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I'm trying to decide now if that's part of it.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Because it is like, I do feel a little bit
- 35:06Speaker 1: of kinship with him. Because I do. I'm still coming
- 35:10Speaker 1: out of a bad relationship. And I was thinking back,
- 35:12Speaker 1: I'm like, wasn't that about the time it started falling apart?
- 35:15Speaker 1: It was 2008. So maybe that's also why I saw
- 35:17Speaker 1: that trailer and went, no, I don't think so. I'm
- 35:20Speaker 1: living this. I don't need to go see a movie.
- 35:22Speaker 1: But I'm, I don't know. I think it's also like he,
- 35:27Speaker 1: our writer, Jason Segel. Yeah. So I'm like, I don't
- 35:30Speaker 1: know that I ever really loved him in general.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:34Speaker 1: And I think that's what puts me in a bad
- 35:35Speaker 1: place because we invest so much time with his character.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't really like him. He's all right.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I don't hate him. He's not a horrible guy. He's just,
- 35:46Speaker 1: he is kind of an idiot. And like, he spent
- 35:49Speaker 1: so much time literally crying, not.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Even figuratively, literally crying. I think that's where I really
- 35:56Speaker 3: latched on. Well, that's the thing.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I was like, I think, I'd gotten past that point,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and now I'm just at the angry, bitter stage. So
- 36:02Speaker 1: I'm like, if he was more of that, I think
- 36:04Speaker 1: I would identify with him more. I'm just like, ugh,
- 36:07Speaker 1: fuck that whole relationship. But he's not really ever even
- 36:09Speaker 1: at that. He's just sad. Granted, it just happened for him,
- 36:13Speaker 1: so that makes more sense.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I feel like it shows very realistic how breakups work,
- 36:19Speaker 3: where there's anger, but then he's also very sad, and
- 36:23Speaker 3: he's trying to have sex with other ladies and none
- 36:26Speaker 3: of it works.
- 36:27Speaker 1: That never works.
- 36:27Speaker 3: That's a bad idea. That always never works.
- 36:30Speaker 1: And again, as time goes, and the one I sort of, again,
- 36:35Speaker 1: you don't like her, but I think I am so
- 36:37Speaker 1: much more impressed with what Kristen Bell does. Yeah. Again,
- 36:40Speaker 1: being the amazing actress she is.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I think two of the best scenes in the movie
- 36:46Speaker 1: are involving her.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Yep.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And, and, One of the things I think she brings
- 36:50Speaker 1: is by the end you realize like when she walks
- 36:52Speaker 1: in at the beginning and he's just like completely broadsided.
- 36:56Speaker 1: He's like, what? Huh? But like you watch. She's not
- 37:01Speaker 1: really that upset because she's been dealing with it for years.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Once you get into her relationship, you're like. Oh, well,
- 37:08Speaker 1: that's why she's already gotten past this point of being sad.
- 37:11Speaker 1: She's spent two or three years sad.
- 37:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Like, and he's an idiot and he didn't bother to notice. Yeah.
- 37:17Speaker 1: So again, it's like, you see a lot more out
- 37:19Speaker 1: of her character, the more you get into it. And
- 37:22Speaker 1: I think again, her performance is so good that like,
- 37:25Speaker 1: by the end, it's like, I'm way more invested in
- 37:27Speaker 1: her than I should be. Like, she should be the
- 37:29Speaker 1: jackass girlfriend that you don't like, but like, because she
- 37:32Speaker 1: brings so much to it. I'm like, yeah. damn, she
- 37:35Speaker 1: kind of really like, and.
- 37:36Speaker 3: It's, you know, she did what she did because she
- 37:39Speaker 3: was unhappy and that he was, you know, and it
- 37:41Speaker 3: makes sense. Then it makes sense where it's like, oh, okay.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Again, now being on the other side of those real
- 37:46Speaker 1: broken relationships, you're like, well, hell yeah. I don't still
- 37:49Speaker 1: want to be in that. It does make sense to
- 37:52Speaker 1: get out of a dysfunctional relationship, even if the other
- 37:54Speaker 1: person's kind of clueless about it. Like, yeah, it makes sense.
- 37:58Speaker 1: So yeah. But I think that was the thing. I
- 38:01Speaker 1: think by the end I was more impressed with that
- 38:03Speaker 1: kind of stuff. I didn't really laugh that much.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like a lot of the laugh parts
- 38:11Speaker 3: are like the awkward laughs where it's not like super
- 38:15Speaker 3: strong joke writing. Like just awkward. Like a lot of
- 38:18Speaker 3: it's from Jonah Hill's awkward character.
- 38:21Speaker 1: It's all the other characters.
- 38:23Speaker 3: And Bill Hader, his character.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I'm not even all that thrilled with Bill Hader.
- 38:26Speaker 3: The weird brother-in-law of Bill.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Paul Rudd is the funniest character in the movie.
- 38:31Speaker 3: How long have you lived out here?
- 38:34Speaker 4: Man, I don't know.
- 38:35Speaker 6: I quit wearing a watch when I moved out here.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Wow, that's so cool. Yeah. No, like my cell phone
- 38:40Speaker 1: has a clock on it, so I don't really need it. Right,
- 38:44Speaker 1: so basically the same thing.
- 38:47Speaker 3: How old are you?
- 38:47Speaker 1: I don't really believe in age or numbers. You know,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I don't... I mean, if you had to put a
- 38:53Speaker 1: number on it, I guess I'd be 44.
- 38:58Speaker 7: Fuck.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Thanks for taking me out here. This is the first
- 39:04Speaker 3: time I've felt good in three weeks or so.
- 39:06Speaker 1: You need to get back on that board is what
- 39:08Speaker 1: you need to do. Yeah? Okay, here's the deal. When
- 39:11Speaker 1: life gives you lemons, just say fuck the lemons and bail. Yeah, no.
- 39:16Speaker 3: You said it.
- 39:17Speaker 7: Totally.
- 39:18Speaker 1: You gotta just pull yourself up by your wetsuit, get
- 39:20Speaker 1: back on that board. Hey, look, man, if you're attacked
- 39:22Speaker 1: by a shark, are you gonna give up surfing? probably
- 39:25Speaker 1: yeah oh my god like everything he says I'm like
- 39:29Speaker 1: tell me all that was ad lib because it does
- 39:30Speaker 1: not match like Jason Segel's screenplay is relatively boring yeah
- 39:34Speaker 1: his dialogue.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Is fantastic the best is yeah when Russell Brand gets
- 39:40Speaker 3: stung by the jellyfish and he's just like you sound
- 39:42Speaker 3: like you're from London as he's bleeding out or his
- 39:47Speaker 3: whole speech about yeah All the surf lessons are so great. Yeah,
- 39:52Speaker 3: Paul Rudd's just great in everything.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Paul Rudd, in general, is a pretty great actor, too, but, like,
- 39:58Speaker 1: has great comedic timing.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 1: And a sense of, like, just sort of knowing how
- 40:02Speaker 1: to bring a goofy character to life and, like, make
- 40:05Speaker 1: them really likable, even though he's an idiot. You know,
- 40:08Speaker 1: it's like you should, once again, you should write him off, but, like,
- 40:10Speaker 1: he's so damn funny.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 40:12Speaker 1: He kind of saves it, and, like, again, the side characters,
- 40:16Speaker 1: Jonah Hill. Yep. And again, being the dark weirdo that
- 40:20Speaker 1: I am, he's genuinely unhappy.
- 40:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Like in every scene. Like by the end of it,
- 40:26Speaker 1: I'm like, those weird little things that he says that
- 40:30Speaker 1: like you almost don't hear him like. wow i'm like
- 40:34Speaker 1: that's a genuinely un and like i'm like that's the
- 40:38Speaker 1: real sense of reality going on oh yeah like his
- 40:40Speaker 1: people are really that unhappy and like we get a
- 40:43Speaker 1: little window of that rest of the silliness and.
- 40:45Speaker 3: It's it's you can relate to his character where it's
- 40:49Speaker 3: you know this famous musician that he idolizes is there
- 40:52Speaker 3: and he's trying so desperately to like have any kind
- 40:55Speaker 3: of connection with them. And I think about that all
- 40:57Speaker 3: the time. When I'm around someone that's like, and I
- 41:00Speaker 3: just want to be like, I just want to tell
- 41:01Speaker 3: them I love them and give them my demo tape.
- 41:05Speaker 1: I keep doing that on this show. I keep meeting
- 41:07Speaker 1: people that I've grown up idolizing. It is interesting, I
- 41:11Speaker 1: have to say, talking to people and I'm like, so
- 41:14Speaker 1: many of them will be really great and I'm so thrilled.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Other people are so afraid, like, oh, I don't want
- 41:19Speaker 1: to meet them and find out they're horrible. I'm like, No,
- 41:22Speaker 1: screw that. I want to know. If that guy's a jackass,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I want to find out. So it's like, I'm the opposite.
- 41:27Speaker 1: I'd much rather find out that somebody's kind of horrible
- 41:31Speaker 1: because I think I can separate the two. I can
- 41:33Speaker 1: still respect their work, but be like, screw that guy. Personally,
- 41:38Speaker 1: that guy's a horrible person, but he's a great actor.
- 41:41Speaker 1: He's a great musician. I think I can do that
- 41:44Speaker 1: more than a lot of people. A lot of people
- 41:45Speaker 1: get caught up in their personal life is the same
- 41:48Speaker 1: as the screen.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Oh, definitely.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I think I could separate them a little. Sometimes you
- 41:52Speaker 1: still bring baggage, but, but yeah. And I think all
- 41:56Speaker 1: of those side characters are kind of what sells it.
- 41:59Speaker 1: I think the guy at the bar and the, the
- 42:01Speaker 1: big Hawaiian dude, those, they have hardly any screen time,
- 42:05Speaker 1: but they have such great character that like they make
- 42:08Speaker 1: up what holds the movie together. I feel like the,
- 42:12Speaker 1: the Jason Segel character and a lot of his dialogue
- 42:15Speaker 1: is pretty run of the mill. Like, again, it's not horrible.
- 42:18Speaker 1: It's just like, Yeah, exactly. That's what you'd say.
- 42:22Speaker 3: And I feel like a lot of those movies, it's
- 42:25Speaker 3: like a hero, like the hero of the movies, like
- 42:29Speaker 3: this person. And that kind of gives you perspective where
- 42:32Speaker 3: it's like, okay, I'm just kind of an idiot in this.
- 42:35Speaker 3: And I'm around some very interesting people where it's just
- 42:38Speaker 3: kind of interesting to see that. But yeah, absolutely. He's
- 42:41Speaker 3: just a big doofus.
- 42:43Speaker 1: He really is.
- 42:43Speaker 3: And I think that's been everything he's been, and he's
- 42:45Speaker 3: just a big doofus. That's the thing.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Some people just loved him on How I Met Your Mother.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I didn't watch that forever, and then finally it was
- 42:53Speaker 1: like forced down your throat in syndication that I've seen
- 42:55Speaker 1: a ton of episodes now.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I was obsessed with that show when it first came out,
- 43:00Speaker 3: and then that just made me so angry. Because if
- 43:04Speaker 3: we can bring up, main characters that are awful Ted
- 43:07Speaker 3: from How I Met Your Mother is the worst main
- 43:09Speaker 3: character he's just.
- 43:09Speaker 1: A dumb shit well again has no personality.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Really and he's a dick to people like not even
- 43:16Speaker 3: like the fun.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Dick not even interesting like all the rest of them
- 43:18Speaker 1: are at least kind of weird you know like the
- 43:20Speaker 1: rest of them are sort of interesting I mean again
- 43:22Speaker 1: with any of them I'm like you're all like I
- 43:25Speaker 1: don't know that we knew going in but very quickly
- 43:28Speaker 1: into that first season you're like okay Neil Patrick Harris
- 43:31Speaker 1: is going to steal every scene he's in and And, like,
- 43:35Speaker 1: watching him on stuff now, I'm like, he just has
- 43:37Speaker 1: so much charisma.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 1: It makes no sense how he can be that damn likable.
- 43:41Speaker 1: But I'm just like, even being a dick, he is likable. Like,
- 43:44Speaker 1: you can't fault him for just, like, he has so
- 43:47Speaker 1: much charisma. It's ridiculous.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a monster.
- 43:50Speaker 1: So, like, yeah, Jason Segel didn't have a chance. Because
- 43:54Speaker 1: I feel like, again, I didn't really like his character
- 43:56Speaker 1: that much. Like, at least Willow and Doogie are interesting,
- 43:59Speaker 1: which is how I used to refer to that show.
- 44:01Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 1: The Willow and Doogie show.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Of course.
- 44:02Speaker 2: But.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like, I don't know. The rest of
- 44:05Speaker 1: them had a, I don't know. Robin's a crackhead. I
- 44:09Speaker 1: can get on board with her ridiculous behavior sometimes because
- 44:11Speaker 1: it was entertaining.
- 44:12Speaker 3: I feel like that's the big thing with that movie
- 44:15Speaker 3: is since the main character was just a doofus.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Who was just kind of caught up in just being
- 44:20Speaker 3: an idiot. That's why I would just, I was like,
- 44:23Speaker 3: that's how I feel.
- 44:23Speaker 1: I am that idiot.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Who was just making terrible decisions left and right.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:30Speaker 3: And then probably the biggest thing about that movie that
- 44:32Speaker 3: I think resonated the most was the Dracula musical.
- 44:34Speaker 1: That, that was the other thing I was going to
- 44:36Speaker 1: get to. I was like, the thing that I liked
- 44:38Speaker 1: so much, well, even before we got to, but like
- 44:41Speaker 1: the payoff at the end is amazing. But like, Just
- 44:43Speaker 1: when she suckered him into going up there and starting
- 44:46Speaker 1: to sing, I'm like, that was one of the funniest
- 44:49Speaker 1: things in the movie. I was like, I don't care
- 44:50Speaker 1: about most of this other dialogue, but he started singing,
- 44:53Speaker 1: and I legitimately laughed. And I'm like, I hadn't done
- 44:56Speaker 1: that a ton.
- 44:56Speaker 3: And Mila Kunis in that scene kills it, because when
- 44:58Speaker 3: he's at the end of the song, the way she
- 45:00Speaker 3: looks at him is like, that's the way I wish
- 45:02Speaker 3: every woman would always look at me.
- 45:04Speaker 1: And again, you see the flashback to Kirsten Bell. It's
- 45:09Speaker 1: just like... And she didn't get it. Don't play it again.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And Mila Gudis is just like, oh my God, you
- 45:15Speaker 1: were the best thing ever.
- 45:16Speaker 3: So it's this metaphor where you have to, one, you
- 45:19Speaker 3: have to find what your Dracula musical is. And two,
- 45:21Speaker 3: you have to find someone that appreciates your Dracula musical.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Someone that gets you in whatever ridiculous thing you're bringing
- 45:26Speaker 1: to the table.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Since that movie's come out, I've been in a couple
- 45:33Speaker 3: of relationships where And then they end and I spend
- 45:36Speaker 3: like a solid month watching that movie over and over.
- 45:39Speaker 1: And it's always. It's like abuse.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Oh, it is. It is because it's like all the
- 45:43Speaker 3: terrible things. I'm like, okay, I can. And then the
- 45:45Speaker 3: Dracula musical at the end just brings it up. And
- 45:47Speaker 3: I'm like, now I feel better. Now I feel like
- 45:49Speaker 3: I need to figure out what my Dracula musical is.
- 45:52Speaker 3: I need to go out there.
- 45:53Speaker 1: That's one of the few times that I really liked
- 45:56Speaker 1: what they were doing with this character. Again, most of
- 45:58Speaker 1: the time he's just that idiot.
- 45:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 46:00Speaker 1: But towards the end when he comes back and he's
- 46:02Speaker 1: singing that song with the new lyrics about how stupid
- 46:06Speaker 1: he is and you need to go get help, but
- 46:09Speaker 1: I don't want to go get help. Again, it's that
- 46:11Speaker 1: weird dark edge that I'm just like, at least for
- 46:14Speaker 1: a second here, I feel like he has some real character.
- 46:17Speaker 1: There really is something going on under there that he's
- 46:19Speaker 1: not just an idiot. he is kind of self-aware of
- 46:22Speaker 1: how stupid he's been. And like, it finally kicked in.
- 46:24Speaker 1: It took a long time, but it finally kicked in.
- 46:26Speaker 1: So that's one of the few moments that I'm like, okay,
- 46:28Speaker 1: I'm on board with this guy right now.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Just right now. And those puppets made by the Henson Company.
- 46:34Speaker 1: That's the other, once I got it, because I didn't
- 46:36Speaker 1: know that was coming. Again, that's the one thing they
- 46:38Speaker 1: don't give you in the trailer. And like, so like,
- 46:41Speaker 1: when he started doing the song, it was funny. When
- 46:43Speaker 1: we get to the big finale, I'm like, So this
- 46:45Speaker 1: was just like his demo reel for the Muppets, right?
- 46:50Speaker 1: Because he ends up coming in, like he and the
- 46:52Speaker 1: director end up writing, directing the next two. Like Seagull,
- 46:57Speaker 1: I think, was gone by the second one, but I
- 46:59Speaker 1: think that director comes back and directs.
- 47:00Speaker 3: The second one. Yeah, I think he stuck around.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Or at least was writer for the second one.
- 47:03Speaker 3: And then the Flight of the Conchords dude that did
- 47:05Speaker 3: the music stuck around too, I think.
- 47:07Speaker 1: So I think the director came back and was screenwriter
- 47:10Speaker 1: on even the second Muppet.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Yeah, what's the coolest way to be like... get involved
- 47:14Speaker 3: with what you want to do.
- 47:15Speaker 1: You can, but it's funny cause you can see it.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Like it isn't like he just stumbled in. Cause even
- 47:20Speaker 1: when that Muppet movie came out, I'm like, how did
- 47:22Speaker 1: he get in that? Now I see it's like, obviously
- 47:24Speaker 1: he'd been literally obsessed to the point he wrote it
- 47:27Speaker 1: into a movie and went, I wonder if I could
- 47:29Speaker 1: actually get Henson to do the puppets.
- 47:31Speaker 3: And then he got him and scammed his way in.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Once his foot was in the door, he's like, Hey guys, um,
- 47:37Speaker 1: So let's make another movie. Of course, I'll be the star.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I just imagine the Henson Company, the pitch for it
- 47:43Speaker 3: is like, all right, we need these Dracula puppets. They're like, oh,
- 47:45Speaker 3: that's kind of different and cool. Oh, it's a romantic comedy.
- 47:48Speaker 3: The main character is going to show his dick twice.
- 47:50Speaker 3: It's going to be totally great. And they're like, oh, yeah, great. Sure,
- 47:54Speaker 3: we're on board with that. We're in. It fits our
- 47:56Speaker 3: brand perfectly.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll give them the, they go completely atypical in
- 48:02Speaker 1: this movie because there is no female nudity really.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Full frontal male nudity.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I think that's very commendable.
- 48:10Speaker 1: And it is funny, like, by the end, sometimes it's
- 48:12Speaker 1: very ridiculous why Kristen Bell is covered during those sex scenes. Yeah.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Why are you wearing all your clothes?
- 48:19Speaker 3: This is so ridiculous. There's multiple sex scenes and she's
- 48:21Speaker 3: very covered up.
- 48:22Speaker 1: She makes the comment at the end about all the girls,
- 48:25Speaker 1: you know, showing, however she phrases it, showing the cooch.
- 48:28Speaker 1: That's what she's coaching.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Yeah, with being an actress in Hollywood.
- 48:31Speaker 1: And I was like, that's just her line. She legitimately
- 48:34Speaker 1: was like, I don't have to do that. I'm Kristen Bell.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I don't have to get naked.
- 48:38Speaker 3: And then, because that was very like, I feel like
- 48:41Speaker 3: that was specifically for her. And then when they're talking
- 48:45Speaker 3: about the terrible movie she was in where a cell
- 48:48Speaker 3: phone's killing people. Was she not in a movie that
- 48:51Speaker 3: had that exact, almost positive, it was called, oh man,
- 48:54Speaker 3: she was.
- 48:55Speaker 1: There is Pulse, which is like all of your electronics
- 48:59Speaker 1: start killing, like the whole system goes down by the
- 49:02Speaker 1: end of that movie.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Which, I might have to look this up, because I
- 49:05Speaker 3: swear she was actually in a movie.
- 49:08Speaker 1: There is, there's like a one missed call.
- 49:10Speaker 3: The signal or something like that, where it's people's cell phones, like, oh,
- 49:14Speaker 3: it's something crazy, but.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Alright we're gonna have to do more research yeah but
- 49:18Speaker 1: I'm positive there's a sequel episode coming I'm positive because
- 49:20Speaker 1: then it was super funny that they bring that up
- 49:22Speaker 1: that her character was in a terrible movie I do
- 49:25Speaker 1: that is one of the things that like again it's
- 49:27Speaker 1: all the little side stuff going on that I enjoy
- 49:29Speaker 1: so much about this their TV show is like Again,
- 49:33Speaker 1: it would be painful to watch an episode of it.
- 49:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:35Speaker 1: But those two-minute segments here and there, that's pretty damn funny.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Just how spot-on they are at making fun of mostly
- 49:44Speaker 1: David Caruso.
- 49:45Speaker 7: Yep.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Just perfectly for any of the investigative crime scene shows.
- 49:49Speaker 3: All the same.
- 49:51Speaker 1: How many dead people can we find a week? Good Lord.
- 49:57Speaker 1: For a while there, like every show was just finding
- 50:00Speaker 1: dead people. And I'm like, really? Like how many of
- 50:02Speaker 1: these do we need? So it was funny that, yeah,
- 50:05Speaker 1: they're making fun of that. And right at the peak
- 50:07Speaker 1: of it, really, when that came out, that was when
- 50:09Speaker 1: all of them were still on the air at the
- 50:11Speaker 1: same time.
- 50:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 50:13Speaker 3: That's pretty great.
- 50:14Speaker 1: That was all really funny.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Yeah. And that also reminds me of relationships because every
- 50:18Speaker 3: ex-girlfriend I have was way into the shows where they
- 50:20Speaker 3: investigate rapes. And I'm like, Why do you watch all,
- 50:23Speaker 3: you're constantly watching shows where they're investigating rapes. This is not.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Are you into this? This is horrible. I respect you
- 50:31Speaker 3: as a woman, but it's weird.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I don't want anything to do with this.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Why should you want to watch it? I don't enjoy
- 50:35Speaker 3: these shows. The shows creep me out and terrify me.
- 50:38Speaker 3: I'm creeped out by it.
- 50:38Speaker 1: You should be really horrified by it.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Oh my lord. Yeah, but I think mostly the Henson
- 50:46Speaker 3: thing and then just completely being able to relate Just
- 50:50Speaker 3: perfect timing with that movie. It just hit right the
- 50:53Speaker 3: first time I saw it. It was during a bad
- 50:55Speaker 3: breakup where it was just like, yep.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I can get that part of it.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Because there are ones that have kind of gotten.
- 51:01Speaker 3: That with me. I do have the Dracula puppet tattooed
- 51:04Speaker 3: on my arm. It's a huge tattoo that says, die, die, die,
- 51:08Speaker 3: I can't.
- 51:10Speaker 1: That is awesome.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Because I was like, that's the most meaningful thing to me.
- 51:13Speaker 1: That is awesome. Yeah.
- 51:15Speaker 3: And I tweeted it yesterday. Jason Segel was like, hey, man,
- 51:18Speaker 3: let's party. Come on.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Let's put this together.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Muppets part three. He refuses to party. Supposedly, this is
- 51:26Speaker 3: like urban, not really urban legend, but supposedly that movie
- 51:30Speaker 3: was written about his real relationship with Linda Cardellini. Because
- 51:35Speaker 3: they started dating on the set of Freaks and Geeks
- 51:38Speaker 3: in real life.
- 51:39Speaker 1: It was funny because that's what I was going through.
- 51:43Speaker 1: I just kept remembering all the recent movies that I
- 51:46Speaker 1: haven't watched of his because they all kind of look
- 51:47Speaker 1: like that same thing. And I started going back and
- 51:50Speaker 1: I'm like, is there anything he's in? I was like,
- 51:52Speaker 1: oh shit, that's right.
- 51:53Speaker 3: He is in Freaks and Geeks.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Freaks and Geeks is the other, aside from Veronica Mars,
- 51:57Speaker 1: one of the best shows ever made on television.
- 51:59Speaker 3: And it's ridiculous to watch it now and just be like,
- 52:01Speaker 3: all these people are famous. Everybody. And like.
- 52:05Speaker 1: And that's kind of, I'm like, I think that's the difference.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Because I was like, yeah, I did like him on that.
- 52:09Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, but that has amazing dialogue. I mean,
- 52:13Speaker 1: I think it's the best work he's ever done, too,
- 52:16Speaker 1: as a writer and director. I think that's epitaph. I
- 52:21Speaker 1: think he got more watered down as he went on.
- 52:24Speaker 1: He had it together on that first show.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Oh, definitely.
- 52:28Speaker 1: And somehow it got dumber and more mainstream.
- 52:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 1: As he got bigger budgets and bigger stars.
- 52:34Speaker 3: It's interesting to watch then that, because Rush was a,
- 52:38Speaker 3: him trying to drum along to Rush or whatever was
- 52:41Speaker 3: a big part of Freaks and Geeks and then he
- 52:42Speaker 3: was in the movie I Love You Man where Rush
- 52:45Speaker 3: is in it and it's, It's weird. I wonder if
- 52:47Speaker 3: they were like, hey, that was pretty cool. Let's try
- 52:48Speaker 3: that again.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Let's do that. Much like the Muppets thing. Let's see
- 52:52Speaker 1: if we can spin this off. There's a lot of
- 52:53Speaker 1: stuff that just carries over. And they do that with the,
- 52:56Speaker 1: let's make a whole other movie with this Russell Brand character.
- 52:59Speaker 1: So they really do kind of spin this.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Originally, if they would have kept, because it was definitely
- 53:06Speaker 3: Russell Brand's same character, but then Jonah Hill, they changed
- 53:08Speaker 3: the character. If they would have kept that pissed off, angry,
- 53:13Speaker 3: shithead character, it would have been an amazing movie. But
- 53:16Speaker 3: I think they were like, no, we have to actually
- 53:18Speaker 3: have a likable person in this. So they tried to
- 53:20Speaker 3: make him like, oh, now he's not the same guy.
- 53:23Speaker 3: He's got a girlfriend and he's trying to, yeah. That
- 53:26Speaker 3: bothered me so much, though. They could have made a
- 53:29Speaker 3: true sequel.
- 53:29Speaker 1: It would have been, yeah, it would have been way
- 53:31Speaker 1: more interesting.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 1: I guess, again, that's one of the main things, I think,
- 53:35Speaker 1: that also kept me away from this movie. So I
- 53:37Speaker 1: guess we'll have to address it now. What are your
- 53:40Speaker 1: feelings on Russell Brand? Because it's one of those, I
- 53:42Speaker 1: had this conversation with the girl who sold me for
- 53:44Speaker 1: getting Sarah Marshall. She's talking about how much she likes it,
- 53:47Speaker 1: and I'm like, this guy. I'm pointing to him on
- 53:49Speaker 1: the front. I'm like, I'm not on board with him, really.
- 53:52Speaker 3: He's one of the most polarizing people. You either love
- 53:56Speaker 3: him or you just can't stand him. And me, I
- 53:59Speaker 3: just absolutely love him. I love his... There's just a
- 54:03Speaker 3: lot of stuff he does with stand-up. Some of it's obnoxious. Yeah.
- 54:06Speaker 3: But he's supposed to be obnoxious.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Again, it's one of those... I just don't get him.
- 54:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:12Speaker 1: But I've gotten to the point now I think I
- 54:14Speaker 1: almost respect him. Oh, yeah. I've heard interviews and I'm like,
- 54:16Speaker 1: I think as a person he's way more interesting.
- 54:19Speaker 3: Oh, he's crazily involved in politics.
- 54:21Speaker 1: And all this. Then I see his performances and I'm like, eh.
- 54:24Speaker 1: It's kind of a letdown. Yeah, it's very.
- 54:26Speaker 3: His performance is just very... At least earlier it was
- 54:29Speaker 3: just like, I don't know, silly, weird. Yeah. Like just
- 54:34Speaker 3: how he dressed and everything. But like I read both
- 54:36Speaker 3: of his books and just from being like a heroin
- 54:40Speaker 3: junkie and just like a garbage human and then accidentally
- 54:44Speaker 3: becoming like an MTV VJ in England and then just.
- 54:49Speaker 1: I don't know how we all do.
- 54:51Speaker 3: He has one of my favorite things I've ever seen
- 54:54Speaker 3: a stand-up comedian do. And I tried to do it
- 54:58Speaker 3: once at a show and it didn't work out. But
- 55:00Speaker 3: he was on stage and then the microphone, mostly people
- 55:04Speaker 3: use wireless. This had a super long cable where he
- 55:07Speaker 3: walked down the side of this big theater with this
- 55:11Speaker 3: long cable and then walked across and made the entire
- 55:13Speaker 3: audience pick the cable up over their heads and pass
- 55:16Speaker 3: it while he walked across the middle. And I was like,
- 55:19Speaker 3: that is so insanely funny. I can see him pulling
- 55:22Speaker 3: that off. Yeah, they all just picked it up. And
- 55:23Speaker 3: he's like in the audience being a creep in tight pants.
- 55:26Speaker 1: How did that work for you?
- 55:28Speaker 3: I tried to do it. And one, the cable wasn't
- 55:30Speaker 3: very long. So it was like I got down to
- 55:32Speaker 3: like the first row. And then I started trying to
- 55:34Speaker 3: go across. And it was like, no. But I feel
- 55:36Speaker 3: like I want to do that someday because it I
- 55:39Speaker 3: laughed so hard at just that. That move is so funny.
- 55:42Speaker 3: The audacity of it.
- 55:43Speaker 1: You kind of have to give it a little credit
- 55:45Speaker 1: for that.
- 55:45Speaker 3: Because we've seen people go out, like Robin Williams would
- 55:47Speaker 3: go out in the audience, get up, climb up onto
- 55:49Speaker 3: the balcony and shit. But then just inconvenience everyone. But
- 55:55Speaker 3: then also bring them all together.
- 55:58Speaker 1: That is pretty funny.
- 55:59Speaker 3: Yeah. And I know a lot of people just, I
- 56:02Speaker 3: think it's a lot of his voice and his mannerisms
- 56:05Speaker 3: and his material are all just kind of like, obnoxious.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Yeah well that's I mean it's like he is always
- 56:11Speaker 1: supposed to be played obnoxious but he plays it almost
- 56:14Speaker 1: too well yeah that you're like oh I really don't
- 56:17Speaker 1: like that guy yeah there were moments like there again
- 56:19Speaker 1: it's the weird little like line that's not even the
- 56:23Speaker 1: money you know it's like it's a weird little off
- 56:25Speaker 1: the cuff thing that he'll say and I'm like okay
- 56:27Speaker 1: wait that was pretty funny like what how come nobody's
- 56:30Speaker 1: like stopping to build the whole scene around that yeah
- 56:33Speaker 1: yeah so like he had moments that kind of redeemed
- 56:36Speaker 1: him for me but it was one of those You
- 56:39Speaker 1: kind of, yeah, there's no middle ground with him.
- 56:41Speaker 3: No, no, not at all.
- 56:42Speaker 1: But here's what I was, and I said this when
- 56:45Speaker 1: I bought it. I said the same thing. I was like,
- 56:46Speaker 1: that's the thing I'll give him. Nobody else can play
- 56:50Speaker 1: his role.
- 56:50Speaker 2: No.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Like, if they write that role, it's not like you
- 56:52Speaker 1: could just bring somebody else in to play it. Like,
- 56:54Speaker 1: it wouldn't work. Like, anything he's done, pretty much, it's like, well,
- 56:59Speaker 1: we can't get anybody but him. Yeah.
- 57:01Speaker 3: Because it was just an obnoxious sex addict, former junkie
- 57:06Speaker 3: British rock star.
- 57:07Speaker 1: But you have to see it, too. Because there are
- 57:10Speaker 1: moments when you're like, yeah, I can see him getting
- 57:12Speaker 1: so many girls. Because if he was just a dick,
- 57:16Speaker 1: you wouldn't buy it. You're like, why is she with him?
- 57:18Speaker 1: But there are moments where you're like, Because even by
- 57:21Speaker 1: the end when he.
- 57:21Speaker 3: Says that, you're so fucking cool.
- 57:23Speaker 1: And I'm like, it hurts me to say it, but
- 57:26Speaker 1: you're cool. And I'm like, yeah, there's moments.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and I would always think about that, too, because
- 57:30Speaker 3: when you break up with someone and they start dating someone,
- 57:33Speaker 3: I was like, that dude sucks. That dude's the worst.
- 57:36Speaker 3: But then there's definitely been moments where I'm like, that
- 57:38Speaker 3: guy's pretty fucking cool. God damn it. I guess I
- 57:41Speaker 3: see why you're doing that. Why couldn't she date a
- 57:43Speaker 3: garbage person?
- 57:44Speaker 1: It would be so much easier if he was just
- 57:46Speaker 1: a loser.
- 57:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and I really like that part, too. Where it's,
- 57:50Speaker 3: he just realizes like, oh, this guy's, he's just a dude.
- 57:54Speaker 3: He's a cool dude. He's not, there's nothing evil. He's
- 57:57Speaker 3: not doing anything out of spite or evil intentions. It's just, hey,
- 58:01Speaker 3: he's just banging your ex-girlfriend.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Like, sorry, dude, it happens.
- 58:07Speaker 1: I was trying to think, again, the best scenes. And
- 58:13Speaker 1: I referenced that earlier. And like, I think, again, there
- 58:16Speaker 1: was like, most of it's, just kind of run in
- 58:18Speaker 1: the middle of what you would expect, you know, people
- 58:20Speaker 1: to say in those situations. Oh yeah. I feel like
- 58:22Speaker 1: the best scenes and the best performances and the whole
- 58:25Speaker 1: thing is that little interaction with, with Kristen Bell and
- 58:30Speaker 1: Mila Kunis at the counter when she's like, Oh yeah,
- 58:33Speaker 1: he's my, he's my ex-boyfriend. And like, that is so genuine.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Like both of them are playing such a, they're just
- 58:40Speaker 1: a game there because they're, It's massively awkward. Yep. But
- 58:45Speaker 1: you also, again, it would be really easy for them
- 58:47Speaker 1: to be like, she's a bitch. I hate her. But
- 58:49Speaker 1: both of them, within that scene, they're both kind of like,
- 58:53Speaker 1: she's all right. Like, I kind of get, like, no,
- 58:55Speaker 1: she really is pretty. You know, it's like they both
- 58:57Speaker 1: kind of admit to themselves, like, all right, I kind
- 59:00Speaker 1: of get it.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a forced, polite tension that's just played perfectly.
- 59:05Speaker 1: But at the same time, there's an underlying, She's all right.
- 59:08Speaker 1: You know, there isn't full on hate. And that's why
- 59:11Speaker 1: I'm like, it's so complicated.
- 59:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:13Speaker 1: That one scene is like, I'm like, it's worth watching
- 59:15Speaker 1: the movie for this scene.
- 59:17Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 59:17Speaker 1: That little two minute exchange with them is massively awkward.
- 59:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:21Speaker 1: And like, there's so many genuine emotions of like, I
- 59:25Speaker 1: like him. Why are you with him? I want to
- 59:26Speaker 1: hate you. Oh, you're kind of okay. Like, I'm like, it's,
- 59:29Speaker 1: it's so well played.
- 59:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:31Speaker 1: That's, I think, the best interaction in the whole movie,
- 59:34Speaker 1: that scene right there.
- 59:35Speaker 3: I like that, and then when she explains her side
- 59:38Speaker 3: of their relationship, she kills it.
- 59:40Speaker 1: That was the other one. I think that was the
- 59:42Speaker 1: one I counted as the next best thing, is that
- 59:44Speaker 1: performance of her. And again, if you gave that to
- 59:47Speaker 1: a terrible actress, you would care less. But she totally
- 59:51Speaker 1: turns it around, and you're like, God, he is an idiot.
- 59:54Speaker 1: And she's really been trying, and now she kind of
- 59:57Speaker 1: comes off like a bitch, but you're wrong. It's like she...
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: She's sort of still a little self-absorbed Hollywood girl, but
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: at her heart, she's still a decent person. Yeah, that
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: scene just totally nails it. Again, Kristen Bell, she's awesome.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. She kills. I can't think of anything she's
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: done wrong. Definitely. The Veronica Mars movie was great.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I backed it. I have my T-shirt.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: Hell, yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: It's a really cheap T-shirt. Just saying. Rob.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Maybe it's just the tropical mindset.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Again, like I said earlier, the other thing I took
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: away was if it didn't cost so damn much, why
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: am I not living in Hawaii? It is a small
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: fortune to move there. Man, I still love that whole
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: society that they have.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: Hanging out on a beach.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: But it's its own little world, too. Like, it was
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: so secluded from everything else for years because it was
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: literally an island. And then, like, now it's kind of
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: like it's America, but not really.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Yeah, not really.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Like, it is still completely... Like, there's no other state
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: that is still an entirely... You know, Alaska's weird, but
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: it's still kind of like it's a normal state, more
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: or less. It's just fucking cold. But, like, Hawaii is, like,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: its own little world, its own little society. massive traditions
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: that go back a thousand years. There's all this stuff
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: going on that is its own separate world, and I'm
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: fascinated by it.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: Oh, it's so cool.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I love the art and their whole heritage and the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: weird stories that they have. I totally am into going there.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I went there in fifth grade, and I don't
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: really remember much.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably not the best time to go.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: It was just a time where I was kind of
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: starting to be a shithead.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: So it wasn't really probably appreciating much.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: You weren't cashing in on the pina coladas.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: That's a good thing for parents. Don't take your babies
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: and children to cool places. Wait until they're older and
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: be like, now you're going to appreciate this. You're 21.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Let's go to Hawaii. Let's go nuts.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: That's, yeah. Little kid, there's not much to do.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: The worst is when you see a baby getting taken somewhere.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: It's like, that baby, they're not even going to remember anything.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: And how much sunblock do you have to put on
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: a child?
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Yeah, just wait. Just give them 18 to 21 years.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: And then you're a horrible parent for burning your child
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: in the sun. Stop being horrible parents, people.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: Hell yeah. What else?
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Take note of a few different other things, but I
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: think we've hit most.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: Of it here.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Excellent. I think it's just a good movie to watch
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: when you're sad.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I guess. Again, I usually don't look for those. That's
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: kind of why I think, again, I think why I
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: avoided it because it really did seem like such a downer.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: It is. I'm already living that downer life most of
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: my life. I'm like, I don't need to watch movies
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: that make it worse.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: I'm big on, I get emotionally invested in any movie
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: I watch. I don't know what it is. But I
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: watched the movie Click with Adam Sandler, and I cried.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: I cried. Oh, Lord. I wept.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Are you sure you want to admit that?
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: I got made fun of for years.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I mean, I do.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: It's getting worse these days. But the father-son thing of
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: him regretting it, and I was like, oh, something just
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: hit me. Like Friday Night Lights, the TV show, I cried.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I'm getting more and more sappy about that kind of stuff.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: And I don't know if it just comes with being
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: a weird old dude now. But I'm just like, I
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: do like the weirdest things now. I won't go on
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: the record as Adam Sandler. But there's some weird stuff
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: lately that I'm like, really?
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: Father-son stuff always hits me.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: That's a weird dynamic that's rooted so deep in our
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: psyche that I don't think we're just like, oh shit,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: what just happened? Something just struck a chord I didn't
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: know I had. So yeah, I think it's pretty interesting
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: watching that stuff and what we take from it. So yeah,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I think that's That's interesting that, yeah, that's why you
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: got into it and why I avoided it. Probably for
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: the same reasons.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: Yeah. I think I saw it in the theater, but
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: it was like we got free passes and it was
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: on campus at the University of Nebraska. So it was
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: all college kids. And I just remember there was somebody
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: in line who was like a film student and they
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: were just shitting on it. So I think maybe I
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: appreciate it more because I was like, fuck that asshole.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Let's have some fun.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't massively bad. Impressive film wise. I
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: was going to say, I did take note that last shot.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I was like, that was pretty cool. Like that was
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: more than I expected. More than anything else he did
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: that like shot of them. And then it pans across
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: all those puppets and stops on the two and just
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: fades to black. I'm like, Oh, I was like, that
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: was pretty damn artistic. Like good for you, dude. Like
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: that's better than pretty much anything else in the movie.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Everything else was pretty static. It could have been shot
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: for TV for most of it. But like that last shot,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: I'm like, that was good. Yeah. He needs to expand
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: on that, do some more of that stuff. So maybe
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: he's doing more of that now. Again, I haven't watched most.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I went through his list. I'm like, he's doing a
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: ton of big movies now, most of them with Jason Segel.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: And I'm like, I still haven't seen hardly any of them.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Modern comedies, they just don't win me over.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: I agree.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: I don't know. So is there anything else you've seen
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: lately that you like? If we're rounding this one out.
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: Is there anything else to recommend? The new Fast and
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: Furious movie was amazing. I loved it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I feel like at least they've become self-aware at this point.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: And they don't care. And that's kind of why. I'm
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: behind a couple.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: The Rock's just out there punching shit.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: And I've said this many a time. Talk about a
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: dude with charisma. No one human being should have as
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: much as The Rock has. So the fact that they
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: added him, I'm like, now I am going to have.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: To start watching these he's just amazing in everything I
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: really like Mad Max Fury Road that was fun that
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: was really good.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Again I think people made a bigger deal out of
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: it than they maybe needed to because I think if
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I just would have went in normal I would have
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: been blown away by the action but I think I
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: went in expecting more and I'm like no it's just
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: a badass chase scene for an hour and a half
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: so I think it's better if you just kind of
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: go in expecting action because like he didn't really mess
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: with a whole lot of story it's just like we're
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: not going to stop long enough for story We have
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: to go.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: That was fascinating, because there's not a lot of movies
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: anybody else would have messed it up.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: He's a really interesting filmmaker, and I feel like I
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: want to go back to all of his stuff and
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: talk about ping-ponging and doing weird kid-related, talking about the
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Henson level. The Babe stuff is genius, but how is
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: this the same? Although we did have somebody on the
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: show that said his theory is Babe is basically the
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: same retelling of Mad Max.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: Ooh, yeah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: That there's one chosen one.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: He's the only one.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: They all have to come to him to get the
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: job done. It's sort of him rescuing in the same
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: way that Mad Max does. I'm like, that's pretty interesting.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: I hadn't thought about that. So I still like to
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: make reference to that.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: As much as possible.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Just because nobody ever knows it's directed by the same. Well,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: written by the first one, written by him. The second
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: one directed by him. What a weird character, that George Miller.
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: He's a maniac.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: But yeah, I just saw Crimson Peak. That was really cool.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. That was a good movie.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: That was cool.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: I've mostly just watched wrestling recently. I've been watching a
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: shitload of wrestling.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Do you like when wrestlers cross over into acting? Because
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: they all do it now.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: They all do, but The Rock's been the only one
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: that's successfully done it. Stone Cold tried to do stuff,
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: and he's just Stone Cold and.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: They all keep turning up and stuff, though. Because now
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you'll see the big W.I.B. I still try to refer
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: to it as F.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: It's not even E anymore, is it?
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: It's still E. It's just its own thing. But when
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: that logo comes up at the beginning of a movie,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, God.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they have their own movie studio. They made a
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: new Leprechaun movie just because they had a little dude.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: That's the deal that McMahon made, though, is when you
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: use one of their actors, they become a producer on
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: that movie. And that's why the logo comes up at
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: the beginning. They get to become something. They're in such
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: high demand now that he can kind of use that
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: leverage and be like.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: It's pretty genius, but it makes for some garbage movies.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Again, I question some of their acting, but I'm hoping
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: we get a few more rocks that come out of it.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: Let's see. What was it? Ready to Rumble. You remember that?
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: WCW's movie?
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: No.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: That was genius. That was a genius, dumb, terrible movie.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: No Holds Barred. No Holds Barred is such a classic,
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: terrible movie.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Like so much of it's... I think I've blocked out
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: so much.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: Those are both... If you haven't seen those movies, you
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: need to watch them and just be like, holy shit.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: And then his usual like every big tough guy has
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: to be like... in charge of a child at some point.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: He did some sort of babysitting movie, didn't he?
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: Hulk Hogan had one. Triple H had one.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Diesel, of course. The Rock had one. That's when
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: you know you've made it, I guess. When they give
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: you a big, dumb, PG-rated, taking care of a kid
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: when I'm not supposed to be taking care of a
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: kid movie.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: Watch this idiot.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Jason Segel, we're talking to you. Why don't you have
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: one of those?
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: It's his next move.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: He's not a wrestler. Well, he's a big dude. That's
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: one of the few things I laughed at was the
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: photographer going, Andre the Giant, get out of the shot.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I'm like, he's a big, weird-looking dude. Jason Segel, he's
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: a big dude.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: Jason Segel.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: He needs to get into wrestling is what.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: We've come to. Oh, hell yeah. That's how it all
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: comes together for me. He just starts wrestling. There you go.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: He'll hit hard times. You just wait. Could have been
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: a contender.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Then he'll be on the second-rate circuit somewhere in the
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Midwest doing a show on a Wednesday night.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: That's just the dream.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Oh, Lord.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Well, all right. We've hit a lot of movies. I
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: guess back to comedy. What's the best place for people
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: to find out more about you and find you online
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: and then maybe come see you in the real world?
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: Probably, I used to have a website, then I quit.
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: Just because.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: They're a little bit of a pain in the ass.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: It's kind of outdated now to have a website.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: So you have to go update and stuff.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I don't like the way mine looks, but I can't
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: afford to do anything else with it. It's as functional
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: as just click on this and go to it and
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: then download stuff.
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: Eventually, I was like, this is just a hassle.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: So Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, I'm just Ian Douglas Terry
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: on everything, which is pretty easy. And I try to keep...
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: Because what drives me crazy is when people... have them
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: all linked together. I don't like that.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: You gotta give people a reason to follow you on
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: three things.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Well, it feels like everybody has their one, you know,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: it's like, everybody's like, oh, I only do Twitter. Oh,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: I only do Facebook.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I think Instagram is my favorite since
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: it's just, Cool pictures.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: I want to write more words. That's why Twitter pisses
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: me off. I want more than 140. Double it and
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: I'll be good. I'm a half a sentence away from
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: getting stuff on there every time. And I'm like, well,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: now what do I take out? The link I'm trying
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: to pass along to you? These are stupid.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: Who made up Twitter? You have to start writing it
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: shorthand and look like a crazy person.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Jimmy Twitter, whatever this guy is that came up with it,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: I want to smack him for this 140 character nonsense.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: It's like, I don't need much more, just a little more.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and then I'm on tour for the rest of
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: this month, and I'll probably die, so this will be
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: the last recorded conversation with me.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Well, this will be your Blair Witch.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to be in Florida for a while,
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: and there's lots of juggalos there.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Oh, there's no returning from Florida. You'll just get sucked in.
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: Just alligators and juggalos. That's on their flag.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: So how do you take to the touring? Because it's
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: nonstop for you, right? I mean, it's just leave one place,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: go to the next, do a show, get in the car.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: And I've kind of... just because i used to have
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: like a desk job so i just be like i'm
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: gonna do it like in sporadically like a weekend like
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: four or five shows take a couple days off and
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: that's what i was doing forever but then i don't
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: do the office job thing anymore and i just do
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: comedy so i can be like that's good i'm going
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: out for an entire month and i feel like now
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: i should start i should turn that down because a
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: month away and drives me insane I've done it two
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: years in a row, and it's just crazy.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: If you can get to the point of just kind
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: of hitting weekends in different spots, but you've got to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: get to a pretty big level to be able to
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: survive on that. I understand.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: And currently living in Denver, it's like the most isolated place.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Omaha's eight hours away. Albuquerque's about six to seven. And
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: then everything north is just Idaho and shit like that,
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: where you're literally just, that's it.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Yeah. At least here we're, Within driving distance of several places.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: So we can kind of hit other stuff within a day.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: That's why we always come and tour the South. Because
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: it's like, oh, you can get most places within three
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: to four hours.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Within a couple hours, you can hit a good-sized city.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: So yeah, that's a good plan.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. So I'll be doing that. Then I'll be
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: back in Denver. Just Denver-ing it up. Until I moved
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: to St. Augustine, Florida. That's the plan. And turned into
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Captain Ron.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Well, again.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: That's my dream career arc is just to become a
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: weird boat captain.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: There's worse dreams to have. Most of them involve puppets,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: and I have some of those. I have a puppet
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: plan that I'm working on. You just wait.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: I admire a good puppet plan.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: So, yeah, I feel like Jason Segel stole my idea,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: but whatever. I'll do mine a little different.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: It's okay. We all have our own Dracula musicals.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: Mine is in production right now.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Well, thank you for talking with us this week.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: And thanks for picking the movie, and it gave me
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: an excuse to watch it, and I found a lot
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: of good stuff in there, too.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: Hey, you know. It's not for everyone, like most things.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: There's nothing that's universally appealing anymore.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Again, I feel like I always try to find the
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: good and bad in everything. Even if it's super beloved,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: I'm like, what about this? But for stuff that people...
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: want to talk about that they love. I'm like, all right,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: but here's my issues with it. I like to balance
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: it out.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: And I'm happy I tricked you into looking at his
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: penis twice.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Damn it.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: So that's what this whole thing was.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: I think that's why he made this movie. He was
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: just like, you know what? I think I'm doing all right,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: and I want everybody to see.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Just an elaborate dick joke.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Just opening scene. Here's my cock.
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: The closing scene. Here it is again.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Here's my cock. Love, Jason Segel.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that's really number one, to get his
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: foot in the door at the old Henson Studios. Number two,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: he just wanted to flash all of America and the
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: world over.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Slam dunk. He nailed it.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: He did it. On both points, he nailed it. I
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: guess congratulations, Jason.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Well, thank you for being with us, man.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: Definitely. Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Well, a big thank you once again to Ian for
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: sitting in with us this week. He put on a
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: great show there at the gallery and you should follow
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: him online and go out and see him perform if
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: he's in your area. And also thank you once again
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: to Will and Carl at Gallery Cave for letting us
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: hang out there and make Movie Meltdown part of the
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: show or connected to the show or a show running
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: in conjunction with another show.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Regardless, they are a great venue, gallery, and coffee shop.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: So come out and support them if you get the chance.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: They are at 1600 Story Avenue. So come by, check
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: out what they have going on, and tell them you
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: heard about them on Movie Meltdown. Otherwise, that about does
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: it this week. We will return next time, same geek feed.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Thanks for listening.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: to get better. I've been drowning too long to believe
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: that the tide's going to turn. And I've been living
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: too hard to believe things are going to get easier now.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: I'm still trying to shake off the pain from the
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: lessons I've learned.
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: And if I see Van Helsing, I swear to the
- 1:16:24Speaker 7: Lord I will slay him. He'd take you from me,
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: but I swear I won't let it be so. Blood
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: will run down his face when he is decapitated His
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: head on my mantle is how I will let.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: This world know How much I love you Die, die, die.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I can't. Talk hard!
