- 0:00Good morning and welcome to another episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:04Chow.
- 0:04I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:06Chi-Ming Chow.
- 0:07Today, we're diving into some groundbreaking news in the world of weight management.
- 0:12Imagine a weight-loss pill that helps you drop 13% of your body weight in just three months.
- 0:18Sounds too good to be true?
- 0:20Well, recent early trials are showing promising results for an experimental drug called
- 0:25amycretin.
- 0:30Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind well-known weight-loss medications like
- 0:35Ozempic and Wegovy, presented their findings at the European Association for the Study of
- 0:40Diabetes annual meeting in Madrid.
- 0:43The drug, amycretin, works by mimicking two hunger hormones: amylin, which regulates
- 0:49appetite and induces a feeling of fullness, and glucagon-like peptide one, or GLP-1, which is
- 0:55also used in Ozempic and Wegovy to suppress appetite and enhance insulin secretion.
- 1:02Martin Holst Lange, the executive vice president and head of development at Novo
- 1:06Nordisk, stated, "Amycretin is the first treatment to harness the two distinct
- 1:11biological pathways stimulated by amylin and GLP-1 in a single molecule." According to the
- 1:18phase one study results, participants experienced an average weight loss of 13.1%
- 1:24after 12 weeks of treatment.
- 1:27Unlike Ozempic and Wegovy, which are administered via injection, amycretin is taken
- 1:32orally as a 50-milligram pill.
- 1:36The clinical trial included participants who were obese or overweight but did not have
- 1:40diabetes.
- 1:41Those who took amycretin for 12 weeks lost more weight compared to those on a placebo.
- 1:46Interestingly, higher doses of the drug led to even greater weight loss.
- 1:51Taking the pill once a day resulted in around 10% weight loss, while doubling the dose
- 1:57increased the weight loss to 13%.
- 2:00Another exciting finding is that participants did not seem to hit a 'weight-loss plateau,'
- 2:06continuing to lose weight as long as they were on the medication.
- 2:10Agnes Gasoirek, a senior clinical pharmacology specialist at Novo Nordisk, highlighted this
- 2:16point, stating, "The lack of weight loss plateauing indicates the possibility of
- 2:21achieving further weight reductions with extended treatment." This dual-action effect
- 2:26could make amycretin a more comprehensive and potentially more effective treatment for weight
- 2:32management than current options, which typically focus on a single mechanism.
- 2:36Dr.
- 2:38Christine Ren-Fielding, director and chief of bariatric surgery at the NYU Langone Weight
- 2:43Management Program, commented on the drug’s effectiveness.
- 2:46"GLP-1-based treatments, like Ozempic, have already shown impressive weight loss results by
- 2:53helping patients feel fuller for longer and reducing appetite.
- 2:57Adding amylin, another hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating insulin and hunger
- 3:03signals, amplifies this effect."
- 3:06However, it is important to note that the most commonly reported side effects of amycretin
- 3:11include gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting, particularly at higher doses.
- 3:17Dr.
- 3:17Ren-Fielding noted, "These adverse effects are not unusual with GLP-1 receptor agonists, which
- 3:24are known to affect gastric motility.
- 3:27It addresses weight management through multiple physiological pathways." She also emphasized
- 3:32the need to monitor these side effects closely, especially since gastrointestinal issues are
- 3:37common among patients with obesity.
- 3:40While the initial weight loss outcomes are promising, further studies are necessary to
- 3:45ensure the long-term safety and efficacy of amycretin.
- 3:50Dr.
- 3:51Ren-Fielding added, "While the initial weight loss outcomes are indeed encouraging, further
- 3:58studies are needed to ensure that the therapeutic benefits consistently outweigh the
- 4:02potential risks, especially with long-term administration."
- 4:05Dr.
- 4:09Ren-Fielding also stressed that GLP-1-based drugs, including this new experimental pill,
- 4:15are not a cure-all for obesity.
- 4:17"Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive, long-term
- 4:22approach.
- 4:23Pharmacological treatments can play a significant role in managing the condition, but
- 4:28they are often most effective when combined with other interventions," she explained.
- 4:34The results of the study are preliminary and have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed
- 4:39medical journal.
- 4:41Novo Nordisk will continue their research on amycretin in the coming months.
- 4:47Martin Holst Lange mentioned, "The safety and tolerability profiles and the magnitude of
- 4:54weight loss support further development of amycretin, and we are awaiting data from the
- 4:59ongoing phase one trial with subcutaneous amycretin, with expected read-out in 2025."
- 5:07If further research supports these initial findings, amycretin could become a viable
- 5:12option for those struggling with obesity.
- 5:14Dr.
- 5:15Ren-Fielding concluded, "The current clinical trials are promising, but we need larger,
- 5:20long-term studies to really assess the safety and overall benefits of the drug.
- 5:27While I’m cautiously optimistic, there’s still a road ahead before we see widespread
- 5:32availability."
- 5:33In a significant leap forward for hearing aid technology, the Food and Drug Administration
- 5:38has authorized the first over-the-counter software that can convert compatible versions
- 5:43of Apple AirPods Pro earphones into hearing aids.
- 5:46This new feature, known as the Hearing Aid Feature or HAF, is designed to amplify sound
- 5:53for adults with mild or moderate hearing impairment.
- 5:57According to the Food and Drug Administration, an estimated thirty million Americans suffer
- 6:02from some degree of hearing impairment.
- 6:05Michelle Tarver, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy, from the Food and Drug
- 6:09Administration Center for Devices and Radiological Health, commented on the
- 6:13importance of this approval.
- 6:15She said, 'Hearing loss is a significant public health issue impacting millions of Americans.
- 6:21Today's marketing authorization of an over-the-counter hearing aid software on a
- 6:26widely used consumer audio product is another step that advances the availability,
- 6:31accessibility, and acceptability of hearing support for adults with perceived
- 6:35mild-to-moderate hearing loss.'
- 6:38The Hearing Aid Feature software is available as a free upgrade for current owners of
- 6:43compatible versions of Apple AirPods Pro and is included at no additional cost with the
- 6:48purchase of Apple AirPods Pro 2.
- 6:51Users can adjust the software to meet their individual hearing needs without the assistance
- 6:56of a hearing professional, making it a highly accessible option for many.
- 7:01Users can install the Hearing Aid Feature software on an Apple iPhone or iPad.
- 7:07Once installed, they can use these devices to set up hearing parameters on their compatible
- 7:12Apple AirPods Pro earphones, including volume, tone, and balance settings.
- 7:19This level of customization allows users to tailor the audio experience to their specific
- 7:24hearing requirements.
- 7:27The Food and Drug Administration evaluated the Hearing Aid Feature in a clinical study
- 7:31involving one hundred and eighteen people with mild or moderate hearing impairment.
- 7:37These participants were enrolled at multiple sites across the United States.
- 7:41The results showed that the Hearing Aid Feature provided a similar perceived benefit as a
- 7:47professional fitting of the same device.
- 7:50The study also demonstrated comparable performance in tests measuring levels of
- 7:54amplification in the ear canal and a measure of speech understanding in noise.
- 7:59Importantly, no adverse events were observed during the study.
- 8:04The application for the Hearing Aid Feature was reviewed under the Food and Drug
- 8:08Administration's de novo pathway, a regulatory pathway for some novel low- to moderate-risk
- 8:14devices.
- 8:15This approval marks a significant advancement in making hearing aids more accessible and
- 8:20affordable for a broader segment of the population.
- 8:23British Columbia has become the first province in Canada to sign a national pharmacare
- 8:28agreement with the federal government.
- 8:30This landmark deal will help fund hormone replacement therapy and diabetes expenses in
- 8:36the province.
- 8:38Federal Health Minister Mark Holland announced that British Columbia's portion of the $1.5
- 8:44billion national pharmacare plan is estimated to be $195 million.
- 8:52Under the memorandum of understanding, funding could begin by April once the legislation
- 8:57passes through the Senate.
- 9:00"My objective remains, and I am confident that we can achieve it, to sign an agreement with
- 9:04every jurisdiction in the country, every province, every territory, prior to April 1 of
- 9:10next year, and to get drugs flowing in every jurisdiction in that timeline," Holland stated
- 9:16at a joint news conference in Vancouver on Thursday.
- 9:20The pharmacare coverage in British Columbia will include birth control and diabetes drugs
- 9:26and supplies.
- 9:27However, British Columbia Health Minister Adrian Dix clarified that oral contraceptives
- 9:34are already covered under a provincial program.
- 9:37Therefore, the funds initially allocated for birth control will be redirected to cover
- 9:43hormone therapy for women.
- 9:45"We are taking that money, the between $30 and $40 million in British Columbia, that will come
- 9:51from the federal government for contraception, and applying it to something else, to make
- 9:55something else free at point-of-purchase, free for British Columbia women," Dix explained.
- 10:01Dix, who has Type 1 diabetes, mentioned that about 150,000 British Columbians receive
- 10:08diabetes medications.
- 10:10He also estimated that covering hormone replacement therapy would benefit approximately
- 10:1540,000 women in the province.
- 10:19"I've had it for a long time, and I can afford to deal with it," Dix said.
- 10:23"Probably after taxes, $120,000 is what it cost me."
- 10:28In April 2023, British Columbia became the first jurisdiction in Canada to provide free
- 10:34birth control.
- 10:36Dix noted that 264,000 women in the province have since accessed free contraception.
- 10:44Holland emphasized the importance of funding hormone therapy for women's health.
- 10:50"For women, about one-third of their life is going to be spent in a post-menopause state,"
- 10:56he said.
- 10:58"Helping make that adjustment, that's not a conversation we have nearly enough.
- 11:03And the fact that so many women can't afford that treatment means fundamentally devastating
- 11:08things for their health."
- 11:10Dr.
- 11:10Stephanie Rhone, medical director at British Columbia Women's Hospital, commented on the
- 11:15significance of the new pharmacare agreement.
- 11:18"We know that untreated menopausal symptoms have a very significant impact on people's
- 11:23health, quality of life, and ability to work," Rhone said.
- 11:27This new pharmacare deal aims to address these issues and improve health care outcomes for
- 11:31women in the province.
