- 0:00You know, usually when we talk about a medical diagnosis,
- 0:04there's a very specific expectation of precision.
- 0:08I mean, it's kind of like engineering.
- 0:09You break your arm. The X-ray shows that jagged
- 0:12white line on the monitor, and the doctor just points at the
- 0:15screen and says, well there it is.
- 0:16Yeah, it's binary. You have a fractured radius, or
- 0:19you know, you don't. The visual evidence is just
- 0:21right there in front of you. Right.
- 0:23Broken or not broken, it's a clean assessment.
- 0:25Humans like things to be visible.
- 0:27We we kind of like things to be categorized, our eyes labeled
- 0:30and put into neat little boxes. It gives us a sense of control
- 0:34over our physical reality. But then you step into the realm
- 0:37of our internal state, right, our spiritual standing, and
- 0:40suddenly that X-ray machine just, it stops working entirely.
- 0:44We're looking at a diagnostic landscape that is, quite
- 0:46honestly, totally murky. Oh yeah, completely.
- 0:49We try to evaluate our souls using the same binary methods we
- 0:53use for our bones and we end up totally confused.
- 0:57It is the absolute definition of diagnostic Muddy Waters.
- 1:01I mean, the internal life just doesn't yield to simple visible
- 1:04metrics. Well, welcome to Reform
- 1:06thinking. Today we're taking you into a
- 1:08really comprehensive deep dive into the historical sermon notes
- 1:11of Jonathan Edwards, and we're focusing specifically on his
- 1:15theological breakdown of Romans 5.1, which states we have peace
- 1:19with God. Spot on.
- 1:21Our goal today is to unpack these really dense, centuries
- 1:24old bullet points and extract the core insights about what
- 1:28peace with God actually entails and.
- 1:30We need to be clear right from the start about what we're
- 1:32looking at with this source material.
- 1:34We're analyzing an outline. These are Edward's personal
- 1:36notes. Yeah, they're structured almost
- 1:38like an architect's blueprint for like a massive cathedral.
- 1:42He is not giving us light, casual reflections here.
- 1:45He is constructing a highly rigid logical argument about the
- 1:49nature of spiritual reality. Which means we're going to
- 1:52bypass all the modern fluffy definitions of peace.
- 1:55You know the ones I mean. Oh, for sure.
- 1:56Today, culture defines peace as just taking a deep breath, or
- 2:00having a quiet morning with a cup of coffee, or maybe feeling
- 2:04temporarily stress free after yoga class.
- 2:06But Edwards forces us to look at peace as an objective cosmic
- 2:10reality. Right.
- 2:11It's so much bigger than a feeling.
- 2:12Yeah, so we're going to look at how he defines peace, the
- 2:16origins of it, the distinguishing marks that prove
- 2:19it's genuine, the benefits it provides, and the necessary
- 2:24course of action to secure it. It's a really logical
- 2:27progression. I mean, he starts with the
- 2:29nature of the peace itself, moves to the divine mechanics of
- 2:32how it's brought to pass, teaches us how to spot the
- 2:35counterfeits, outlines the staggering benefits, and then
- 2:40finishes with the practical steps required for the
- 2:42individual. It's a lot.
- 2:44It is. It's a complete theological
- 2:46system condensed into a few pages of incredibly tight bullet
- 2:49points. So let's start with the very
- 2:50first distinction he makes, because it kind of sets the
- 2:52stage for everything else that follows.
- 2:55Edwards divides peace into two distinct categories.
- 2:58He calls them real peace and sensible peace.
- 3:01Yes, he reads that one consists in the state of the soul and the
- 3:05other in the sense of the soul. This is a crucial distinction.
- 3:08When Edwards says real peace, he means an objective legal state.
- 3:12It is a fact. Like a court ruling.
- 3:14Precisely, it exists independently of how you happen
- 3:17to feel on any given Tuesday morning.
- 3:19He calls this objective state the foundation.
- 3:22The sensible peace, on the other hand, is the sensation or
- 3:25apprehension of that objective reality.
- 3:28It's your subjective experience. He argues that the real peace is
- 3:32the ground of the sensible peace.
- 3:34You cannot have the true feeling without the actual legal reality
- 3:38underneath it. And he breaks down this real
- 3:40peace into two distinct halves, something negative and something
- 3:44positive. Let's dig into that negative
- 3:45aspect first. OK, so he defines the negative
- 3:47side as the removal of God's anger and displeasure, the
- 3:50forgiveness of sin. But then he gives this rapid
- 3:53fire list of scriptural metaphors to explain what that
- 3:56removal actually looks like in practice.
- 3:58The fear of volume of imagery he uses here is really striking.
- 4:01I mean he references Isaiah 1.18 talking about sins being washed
- 4:05white as snow. He mentions Isaiah 44 comparing
- 4:07forgiveness to the unrolling of a cloud.
- 4:09Wow, unrolling of a cloud. Yeah, and he points to Jeremiah
- 4:1350, describing sins as though they never had been.
- 4:17He quotes Micah 7 about sins being cast into the depths of
- 4:20the sea and Daniel 9 about making an end of sin.
- 4:25I really want to spend some time with those metaphors because
- 4:27they are incredibly visceral. They're very physical.
- 4:30Take that phrase Unrolling of a cloud.
- 4:32That's a great one. If you think about a massive,
- 4:35severe storm system blocking the sun, you know the removal of
- 4:39that cloud changes the entire atmosphere of the Earth below.
- 4:42It right, the temperature shifts.
- 4:43The barometric pressure drops, the sun is shining again, the
- 4:47darkness is completely gone. It alters the environment on
- 4:49fundamental level. Or consider the imagery from
- 4:53Micah 7, casting sin into the depths of the sea.
- 4:56That's heavy. That is not just tossing
- 4:58something into a puddle on the sidewalk.
- 5:00The depths of the ocean represent absolute
- 5:03irretrievability. We're talking about extreme
- 5:05pressure, total darkness. Once something goes down into a
- 5:08place like the Mariana Trench, it's never coming back up to the
- 5:11surface. The absolute totality of the
- 5:14language is the main point Edwards is trying to convey.
- 5:17He wants to make sure we understand that this negative
- 5:20aspect, the removal of anger, is not a partial reduction.
- 5:24It's not a compromise. No, it's not God down grading
- 5:28his hostility from a level 10 to a level 4.
- 5:31It is an absolute definitive termination of hostilities as he
- 5:36quotes from the book of Daniel. It is making an end of sin.
- 5:39The legal Ledger is completely wiped out.
- 5:41The state of animosity is entirely dismantled.
- 5:44But Edward says that's only half of the equation, right?
- 5:46Right. That is just the negative side.
- 5:48That is the removal of the bad. Then he moves to the positive
- 5:51side of real peace. He says it's being received and
- 5:54treated as the objects of God's favor.
- 5:57And he notes that in Scripture, this is something more than a
- 5:59neutral state. He uses specific legal words
- 6:03like title, manifestation, and treatment.
- 6:06Well, if we look at the broader theological context here, it's
- 6:08the difference between a judge simply dropping the criminal
- 6:11charges against a defendant versus the judge formally
- 6:14adopting that defendant into his own.
- 6:15Family. Oh wow, that's a huge leap.
- 6:17It is and making him the legal heir to his estate.
- 6:20Dropping the charges is the negative part.
- 6:23You are no longer going to prison.
- 6:24The penalty is removed, but the positive part is the adoption.
- 6:28You now have a title. You have a legal right to the
- 6:31inheritance. He explicitly points out the
- 6:33difference between mere love and active favor.
- 6:35Here he talks about acceptance, compliance, and being entitled
- 6:40to a reward. It's a staggering shift in
- 6:42status. You go from an enemy under
- 6:45absolute displeasure to an accepted heir entitled to a
- 6:48reward. And all of this, Edwards
- 6:50insists, is real peace. It is the objective legal
- 6:53reality of the believer state, whether they feel it in the
- 6:56moment or not. Which logically brings us to the
- 6:58second category, sensible peace. This is the inward holy calm and
- 7:02quietness of the soul. It arises from an apprehension
- 7:05of that real union with God. Edwards points out that when
- 7:08Christ speaks of peace in John 14.27, saying Peace I leave with
- 7:12you, My peace I give unto you. This inward sweet calm is
- 7:15usually what is intended by the text.
- 7:17And even within the sensible Peace, Edwards finds 2
- 7:20subcategories. He breaks sensible peace into
- 7:22peace of conscience and peace of confidence.
- 7:25The peace of conscience is described as a sweet calm
- 7:28arising from a sense of the pardon of sin and acceptance
- 7:31with God as righteous. OK.
- 7:33He states that it relies on 2 specific things, a sense of
- 7:37sufficiency and an apprehension of the faithfulness of the
- 7:40promise. You realize the payment that was
- 7:42made is sufficient to cover the debt, and you trust the promise
- 7:45of the one making the offer is reliable.
- 7:47That combination produces REST. Then he contrasts that with the
- 7:51peace of confidence. He says this is the rest of the
- 7:53soul that arises from the sense or feeling of a real conformity
- 7:56to and union with Christ. The piece of conscience is a
- 8:00rest that arises from hope, but this piece of confidence is a
- 8:03rest that arises from love. The distinction between those
- 8:06two subjective states is remarkably sharp.
- 8:09Piece of conscience is looking at the legal transaction and
- 8:12feeling relief. It's looking at the courtroom
- 8:14verdict and saying well, I am safe because the debt is paid.
- 8:17But the piece of confidence is relational.
- 8:19It's looking at the person of Christ and feeling union.
- 8:23It is driven by an act of love for who he is, not just a
- 8:26reliance on what he has done for you in a legal sense.
- 8:28So imagine a distant, incredibly wealthy relative passes away and
- 8:34legally leaves you a massive inheritance.
- 8:36OK, I. Like where this is going?
- 8:38Right the moment the judge signs the paperwork in probate court,
- 8:41millions of dollars are legally placed into your bank account.
- 8:44The funds are there. The bank guarantees them.
- 8:48The legal transfer is complete. That is your real piece.
- 8:52It's an objective legal fact. You are wealthy.
- 8:56But you might be walking around all day entirely unaware of that
- 8:59courtroom proceeding, you know, stressing about how you're going
- 9:01to pay your electric bill before the power gets shut off.
- 9:04Yeah, your subjective experience is still sheer anxiety, even
- 9:08though your objective reality is absolute financial security.
- 9:11The sensible piece is the overwhelming relief you feel the
- 9:15moment you finally open your banking app on your phone, see
- 9:17those massive numbers on the screen, and realize the money is
- 9:20actually sitting right there in the account.
- 9:22That makes total sense. The money existed whether you
- 9:24check the app or not. The legal reality was completely
- 9:28independent of your emotional state or your awareness.
- 9:31But checking the app, seeing the proof and resting in the
- 9:35security of the bank's promise, that is what provides the
- 9:38sensible calm to your nervous system.
- 9:40What Edwards is mapping out in these notes is that the
- 9:43objective reality, the money in the bank, to use your analogy,
- 9:47must be actively constructed by someone.
- 9:49A legal standing of that magnitude does not just
- 9:52materialize out of thin air. No it doesn't.
- 9:55It requires deliberate action, authorization and execution by a
- 9:59higher authority. So if this piece is an objective
- 10:02steed of the soul, how is it brought to pass?
- 10:05Who built this legal reality? This takes us right into the
- 10:09divine mechanics of Edwards theology.
- 10:11Edwards doesn't offer a simple one sentence answer to how this
- 10:14happens. He lays out a five step
- 10:16framework detailing the distinct roles of the Trinity in securing
- 10:20this peace. OK, lay it out for.
- 10:21Us Well, He starts at the absolute very beginning of
- 10:24existence. The 1st and highest source, he
- 10:26says, is God's eternal foreknowledge and the choosing
- 10:29of particular persons by the Father.
- 10:31He quotes Jeremiah 31.3 here. I have loved thee with an
- 10:36everlasting love. He talks about the Father giving
- 10:39these persons to the Son, and the Son owning them,
- 10:42predestinating them. He references Ephesians 1.4 and
- 10:45Titus 1.2. He calls this the first
- 10:48foundation of the entire system. This requires us to really
- 10:51stretch our concept of time. Edwards is anchoring this piece
- 10:55not in a spontaneous reaction to human history, but in eternity
- 10:58past. Way before we existed.
- 11:00Right before the medical X-ray machine was even invented,
- 11:03Before the physical universe existed, before Light itself was
- 11:06spoken into existence, this piece was conceptualized and
- 11:09initiated by the Father. The motivation is not a sudden
- 11:13burst of pity. It is, as the text explicitly
- 11:15states, everlasting love. So the Father initiates the
- 11:18plan. Then Edwards moves to the Son's
- 11:20role in this massive framework. He says the purchase of this
- 11:23blessing was made by the offering that Christ made to the
- 11:25Father. He calls Christ the Prince of
- 11:27Peace from Isaiah 9.6 and points out that we are made nigh by the
- 11:30blood, referencing Ephesians 2.14.
- 11:33Christ acts as the great High Priest in this scenario.
- 11:35Notice the specific economic language Edwards employs in the
- 11:38text. He says the purchase of this
- 11:41blessing, a very real transaction, took place.
- 11:45It wasn't just waved away. No, the legal reality of peace
- 11:48required a literal physical offering.
- 11:52The hostility between a holy God and sinful humanity wasn't just
- 11:56brushed aside, it was absorbed and paid for by the high priest.
- 12:00This is the central mechanism that makes the real peace
- 12:03objectively valid. The infinite debt was settled
- 12:07with infinite blood. After outlining the purchase,
- 12:11Edwards addresses the way we actually come to have an
- 12:13interest in this purchase. He says we are brought into
- 12:15peace with God by being united to Christ.
- 12:17Yes, he mentions A threefold union, stating that the real
- 12:21union is the foundation of the legal union.
- 12:23Because the believer is in Christ, the believer necessarily
- 12:26becomes a partaker of the peace that Christ purchased.
- 12:28This is a massive theological concept within Reformed thought.
- 12:32You don't get the benefits of the purchase from a distance.
- 12:34You don't receive a package in the mail while remaining a
- 12:37stranger to the sender. Right.
- 12:38You have to be intimately united to the purchaser.
- 12:42The legal standing of righteousness is transferred
- 12:45specifically because of the relational union with the Son.
- 12:48And who facilitates that union? Edwards moves to the third
- 12:51person of the Trinity. He says the immediate efficient
- 12:54of this union is the Holy Spirit.
- 12:56He references Romans 8.9 and 10, explaining that Christ is in
- 13:00them and they are in Christ through the operation of the
- 13:03Spirit. The phrase immediate efficient
- 13:05cause is a really dense philosophical term.
- 13:08It is. It basically means the Holy
- 13:10Spirit is the direct active agent who executes the
- 13:13connection in real time. The Father planet in eternity
- 13:17past. The Son purchased it on the
- 13:18cross, but the Spirit is the one actually applying that purchased
- 13:22reality to the individual person right now.
- 13:24And Edwards uses some incredibly vivid language to describe this
- 13:28union. Facilitated by the spirit, he
- 13:30writes. The vine is united by deriving
- 13:32SAP, the womb by deriving life. Those are intense metaphors.
- 13:37Really intense. Up until this point in the
- 13:39notes, we've been talking about legal transactions, purchases,
- 13:42titles and objective states. It all sounds very courtroom
- 13:46oriented. Why does Edwards suddenly shift
- 13:49to such visceral biological metaphors?
- 13:52SAP flowing through a vine? A womb deriving life?
- 13:56Why use organic imagery for illegal reality?
- 13:59The shift in language is highly intentional.
- 14:02Edwards is demonstrating that justification, the legal
- 14:05standing of peace, cannot be isolated from a living, vital
- 14:09connection to the source of life.
- 14:10I see a courtroom verdict changes your legal status on a
- 14:13piece of paper, but it doesn't change your internal biology.
- 14:16Edwards is arguing that the union forged by the Holy Spirit
- 14:19does both simultaneously. So the legal union is completely
- 14:22inseparable from an organic life giving union.
- 14:24Think about the imagery of the vine and the SAP.
- 14:27A branch is not declared legally part of the tree while remaining
- 14:30a dry severed stick lying on the dirt.
- 14:33No, it would be dead. Right.
- 14:35The union is established by the actual physical flow of living
- 14:38SAP from the main trunk into the branch.
- 14:41The legal reality of belonging to the tree is built on top of
- 14:44the organic reality of receiving life from it.
- 14:48The branch has a right to the soil specifically because it is
- 14:52organically deriving life from the main vine.
- 14:54And the wound metaphor is even more intense than the vine
- 14:57metaphor. A fetus in the womb is not just
- 14:59legally classified as a dependent for tax purposes, it's
- 15:03physically deriving oxygen and nutrients through the umbilical
- 15:06cord every single second. It's constant.
- 15:08The connection is a matter of ongoing biological survival.
- 15:12Edwards is saying that our peace with God is not just a dusty
- 15:15contract sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere in heaven.
- 15:18It's a living, pulsating connection where spiritual life
- 15:21is actively being transferred to us by the Holy Spirit.
- 15:24He says the work by which the Spirit effects this living union
- 15:27is faith. Faith is the uniting act.
- 15:29Because the soul unites itself to Christ through faith.
- 15:32God looks on the center as one with Christ.
- 15:34And the end goal of all of this divine machinery?
- 15:38Edwards concludes in this section is the sanctification of
- 15:41heart and life, including faith and all other graces.
- 15:45This sanctification is what gives the sensible peace.
- 15:49He calls it the Seal of the Spirit, the earnest of the
- 15:52Spirit, the spirit of adoption. We can see the full trajectory
- 15:55of his thought process here. I mean from the eternal mind of
- 15:59the Father, to the physical blood of the Son, to the active
- 16:01application by the Spirit utilizing faith to forge a
- 16:04living union which results in a fundamentally changed heart.
- 16:08It's huge. The divine mechanics are
- 16:10incredibly thorough and leave no room for human effort in the
- 16:14initial construction of the objective reality.
- 16:16But if this vital living connection is established and it
- 16:20is supposed to produce a sensible feeling of peace, it
- 16:23forces a very practical issue that everyone has to deal with,
- 16:26which is human beings are incredibly skilled at self
- 16:29deception. Oh yes, we are.
- 16:31We can convince ourselves we're at peace when we are actually
- 16:34just ignoring our massive problems.
- 16:37If we're looking at this complex divine machinery, how can a
- 16:40person differentiate this genuine spiritual reality from a
- 16:44counterfeit feeling? How do you know you are not just
- 16:47faking it or mistaking a good mood for divine peace?
- 16:51Edwards anticipates this exact problem.
- 16:54He recognizes that because there is a real peace and a true,
- 16:57sensible peace, there must logically also be a false peace.
- 17:02He provides specific criteria to separate true peace from false
- 17:05appearances and emotional counterfeits.
- 17:07OK, so he starts with a very stark contrast regarding the
- 17:09origin of the feeling. He says that in those who have
- 17:12true peace, their sensible peace has its foundation laid in
- 17:15conviction. He specifically notes that
- 17:18spiritual conviction has its foundation in light and not in
- 17:21darkness. This is a diagnostic test for
- 17:24the soul. A false peace is built on
- 17:25darkness. It relies entirely on ignoring
- 17:28the truth of the situation. It's the peace of someone who
- 17:31refuses to open their mail because they know it is full of
- 17:34past due bills and collection notices.
- 17:36As long as they don't look at the bills, they feel peaceful.
- 17:39But that specific type of peace requires deliberate ignorance.
- 17:43It requires the room to be completely dark.
- 17:46True peace, according to Edwards, requires staring
- 17:49directly at the harsh reality of the situation.
- 17:52It involves legal conviction. You have to turn the lights all
- 17:56the way up. You have to face it.
- 17:57You have to look at the massive pile of spiritual debt,
- 18:00recognize the utter impossibility of paying it off
- 18:03yourself, and feel the crushing weight of the conviction.
- 18:06The true sensible peace only comes after the light has
- 18:09exposed the fatal problem and the true solution, Christ, has
- 18:12been applied. He then adds another layer to
- 18:14the diagnostic test, stating that in those who have true
- 18:17peace, this quietness and rest of soul is not only their
- 18:20comfort, but their virtue or nature.
- 18:23Comfort versus virtue. What is the functional
- 18:25distinction he is drawing there? Comfort is entirely
- 18:27circumstantial. You sit in a warm room by a fire
- 18:31on a freezing cold day and you experience comfort.
- 18:34But the moment you walk outside into the snowstorm, the comfort
- 18:37vanishes instantly because the external circumstance changed.
- 18:40OK, I see. Virtue, however, is a permanent
- 18:43characteristic of the soul. Edwards is arguing that true
- 18:46peace actually alters your fundamental nature.
- 18:48It's not just a soothing sensation that washes over you
- 18:51and your life is going well. It becomes a resilient trait
- 18:54embedded in your character that persists regardless of the
- 18:57weather outside. He also gives us a clear order
- 19:00of operations to look for. He says a sense of glory and
- 19:03suffering precedes a sense of possession.
- 19:06And critically, a rest of choice and love precedes a rest of
- 19:10hope. This exposes the true hidden
- 19:13motives of the human heart. Are you seeking peace because
- 19:16you simply want a cosmic get out of jail free card to avoid
- 19:19punishment? Or are you seeking peace because
- 19:22you genuinely love the creator of the universe?
- 19:25That's a challenging question. Edwards says the rest of choice
- 19:28and love must always come first. You must find rest in God for
- 19:32who He is, His intrinsic glory and beauty, before you find rest
- 19:36in Him for what He gives you, which is the rest of hope.
- 19:39Loving the giver must logically and experientially precede
- 19:43hoping in the gift. I want to isolate his final mark
- 19:47regarding true peace because on the surface it sounds completely
- 19:50contradictory. Edwards writes that in Those who
- 19:53have Peace, there is a union of heart with God and Christ
- 19:56attended with an irreconcilable war with God's enemies.
- 20:00Yes, the irreconcilable war. How can genuine peace mandate an
- 20:04endless irreconcilable war? It feels like a massive paradox.
- 20:08You can't be at peace if you are actively fighting an
- 20:10irreconcilable war on multiple fronts.
- 20:12It sounds like a paradox until you examine the actual nature of
- 20:15the union he described earlier with the vine in the branches.
- 20:18Edwards is saying that if you are genuinely united in heart to
- 20:21the Creator of the universe, you are aligning yourself completely
- 20:24with His absolute standard of goodness, justice and truth.
- 20:28And by definition, anything that opposes that absolute standard
- 20:31becomes your mortal enemy. You cannot be at peace with
- 20:34absolute light without being at war with absolute darkness.
- 20:38You cannot be at peace with perfect justice without being at
- 20:40war with systemic corruption. The peace is specific to your
- 20:44relationship with God, but because God's enemies are
- 20:47actively trying to dismantle his order and his truth in the
- 20:50world, aligning yourself with God logically necessitates total
- 20:54opposition to those forces. The war is the actual proof of
- 20:58the peace. If you are not at war with the
- 21:01things that hate God, it proves you're supposed to.
- 21:03Peace with God is a counterfeit. Build on compromise.
- 21:06The proof of the piece is the active presence of the conflict
- 21:10against what is wrong. It's a really sobering test, but
- 21:13once you verify this true piece using these strict marks,
- 21:17Edwards moves from the intense diagnostic scrutiny to laying
- 21:20out the advantages of possessing this reality.
- 21:22The section of his nose detailing the benefits of this
- 21:25piece is almost overwhelming in its scope.
- 21:27The scale is breathtaking. He opens by talking about an
- 21:30infinite defense. He writes that those with this
- 21:33peace are infinitely above the reach of everything that might
- 21:36destroy them. He justifies this extreme
- 21:38language by anchoring it in the eternal attributes of God.
- 21:42He says destroying the believer is as impossible as destroying
- 21:44God himself, because infinite wisdom, infinite strength,
- 21:48infinite price, and infinite truth are all fully engaged in
- 21:52their defense. He uses the phrase dwell on
- 21:54high, infinitely high. He backs this up with Hebrew 6
- 21:58mentioning the oath of God. It's not just a promise written
- 22:00on paper, it's an oath backed by the eternal, unchanging nature
- 22:05of the Creator. It's an impenetrable fortress
- 22:08that nothing can breach. He then makes a claim that takes
- 22:11this defense to an even more radical level.
- 22:13He says this peace results in being at peace with all God's
- 22:16creatures across the entire spectrum of existence.
- 22:18Yeah, he lists them out 1 by 1. He says we're at peace with
- 22:21angels, Saints, the sun, the moon, the stars, beasts, stones,
- 22:25water, fire, and poisonous things.
- 22:27He references Job 5.23, Isaiah 43.2, and Mark 16.
- 22:32He's painting a picture of total cosmic alignment.
- 22:35Because you are at peace with the Creator of the universe, the
- 22:38physical universe itself is no longer fundamentally hostile to
- 22:41your existence. Imagine a massive, elaborate
- 22:44theater production. Imagine you are wandering around
- 22:46a dark, chaotic stage filled with trapdoors, swinging props,
- 22:51pyrotechnics and heavy stones hanging from the ceiling on thin
- 22:55ropes. Sounds terrifying.
- 22:57Right. If you were just a trespasser
- 22:59wandering onto that stage in the dark, every single object is a
- 23:03deadly threat. You could fall through a loose
- 23:05floorboard or be crushed by a falling prop.
- 23:08The environment is actively dangerous and unpredictable.
- 23:12But if you are the child of the director who designed the stage,
- 23:15your entire perspective on that environment shifts completely.
- 23:18Exactly. The physical objects are exactly
- 23:21the same. The tract doors are still there.
- 23:23The pyrotechnic fire is still incredibly hot.
- 23:25The heavy stones are still hanging in the rafters above
- 23:28your head. But you know that the director
- 23:30is sitting in the control booth. He operates every single lever
- 23:33and pulley in the building. He knows exactly where you were
- 23:36standing on the stage at all time.
- 23:38Right, he's in control. The physical universe is no
- 23:40longer a chaotic, threatening environment governed by random
- 23:43chance. It's a meticulously operated
- 23:46theater controlled by a friendly director.
- 23:49The stones, the water and the fire are just props in His
- 23:54sovereign hand. Edwards takes that concept of
- 23:56the theater props to its absolute extreme limit.
- 23:59He adds wicked men and devils to the list of things the believer
- 24:03is at peace with. Which is wild to think about.
- 24:05It is, and he doesn't mean a warm, friendly relationship with
- 24:08devils, obviously. He references First Corinthians
- 24:113.21 and 22, which says all things are yours.
- 24:15He is asserting the shocking reality that even the malicious
- 24:19actions of wicked men and devils are overruled by the director
- 24:22and inadvertently forced to work for the ultimate good of the.
- 24:25So they're like props? Yes, they are props in the
- 24:28director's hand, even when their explicit intention is to cause
- 24:31harm and destruction. The scale of that theological
- 24:34claim is just hard to comprehend.
- 24:36But then Edward zooms all the way back in from the macro
- 24:39cosmic scale of stars and devils down to the intimate scale of
- 24:42daily life. He lists communion with God and
- 24:45and holy and sweet walking and friendly conversing with God.
- 24:49He quotes Amos 3.3, Can two walk together except they be agreed
- 24:54and notes that God has called you friends.
- 24:57It's the juxtaposition of the infinite and the intimate.
- 25:00You are shielded by an infinite defense that the devils cannot
- 25:03penetrate, but your actual day-to-day experience is
- 25:06friendly, conversing with the creator of the cosmos.
- 25:09This daily conversation leads to what he calls assimilation to
- 25:12God, where you start to look and act more like him over time.
- 25:15And it leads to communion with other Saints who share that same
- 25:18reality. He also lists some intensely
- 25:20practical benefits for daily living in a broken world.
- 25:24He calls this peace and anchor to the soul, providing
- 25:27steadfastness under the constant changes of life.
- 25:30He describes A steadfast calm in the midst of violent storms and
- 25:33a steadfast meekness in the midst of harsh oppositions from
- 25:36others. Notice the deliberate repetition
- 25:38of the word steadfast. It implies A stabilizing weight
- 25:41holding a ship in place when external oppositions and storms
- 25:45rise up to batter the ship. This piece prevents you from
- 25:47being thrown off balance or capsized.
- 25:50It keeps you grounded. Right.
- 25:51It provides strong and conquering support under the
- 25:54physical and emotional troubles of life, even to the point of
- 25:57giving comfort when waiting for a physical death.
- 26:01He finishes the list of benefits with simply Joy Unspeakable.
- 26:06We have this massive objective legal reality.
- 26:10We see the divine mechanics of the Trinity securing it in
- 26:13eternity past. We have the specific marks to
- 26:15prove it's genuine in our own hearts.
- 26:17We see the staggering list of cosmic and intimate benefits.
- 26:20It's a lot to take in. With all of that established,
- 26:23the practical question is how someone actually takes hold of
- 26:26this reality. Edwards provides his final
- 26:29points, outlining the course to be taken in order to obtain this
- 26:32peace and maintain the sensible enjoyment of it.
- 26:35He provides 7 specific steps and they are incredibly rigorous.
- 26:39He begins by requiring a sense of the great breach.
- 26:42You have to clearly understand that a massive relational and
- 26:44legal rupture has occurred between you and the Holy God.
- 26:47Step 2 follows right on its heels, a sense of the sheer
- 26:51misery caused by that breach and the absolute necessity of
- 26:54reconciliation. But he adds A crucial
- 26:57instruction here. He says all false rest must be
- 27:00destroyed. Yes, he specifically calls out
- 27:02two primary sources of false rest the world and own
- 27:07righteousness. Those are the two primary
- 27:09pillows human beings try to sleep on to avoid dealing with
- 27:12the reality of the breach. We either distract ourselves
- 27:15with the world, chasing financial success, physical
- 27:18pleasure, or social comfort, or we rely on our own
- 27:21righteousness, convincing ourselves that we are basically
- 27:23good people who don't really need an external savior to
- 27:26rescue us. Edwards says both of those
- 27:29pillows must be completely destroyed before true peace can
- 27:31be found. That brings us to Step 3, which
- 27:33is remarkably severe. Edwards writes that the course
- 27:37to be taken requires A conviction that God may justly
- 27:40refuse ever to be at peace with us.
- 27:42Why does Edwards insist on such a severe, humbling realization
- 27:46as a prerequisite for experiencing peace?
- 27:48Why must someone believe God has the absolute right to refuse
- 27:51them reconciliation? It goes back to destroying that
- 27:54false rest of your own righteousness.
- 27:56If you approach God believing He owes you peace, that He is
- 28:00somehow morally obligated to forgive you because you are
- 28:02trying your best, you are still resting on your own personal
- 28:05merit. You feel entitled to the
- 28:07inheritance. OK, I see.
- 28:08But true peace, as we discussed earlier with the legal
- 28:11terminology, is based on an objective transaction of sheer
- 28:15grace. Stripping away your entitlement
- 28:17and acknowledging God's absolute right to leave you in your
- 28:20rebellion is the only way to genuinely recognize the
- 28:23unmerited grace of the Prince of Peace.
- 28:26You have to fully agree that you deserve the prison sentence
- 28:28before you can truly receive the royal pardon.
- 28:31The sense of entitlement blocks the ability to receive grace
- 28:35once that entitlement is shattered by conviction.
- 28:38Step 4 is an eternal divorce of the heart from that which made
- 28:42and maintains the breach. You have to formally and
- 28:44permanently sever ties with the sin that caused the hostility in
- 28:48the first place. That deliberate severance
- 28:50creates the spiritual vacuum for Step 5.
- 28:53The Prince of Peace must be resorted to and embraced.
- 28:56You turn away from the sin and turn directly to Christ as the
- 28:59only viable refuge. Step 6 echoes what we discussed
- 29:03earlier in the Distinguishing Marks, and high war must be
- 29:07maintained with God's enemies. The Alliance has fundamentally
- 29:10shifted and you must act accordingly in your daily life.
- 29:14Finally, Step 7A, spirit of peace and love must rule in our
- 29:18hearts and lives. Edwards notes that this is the
- 29:21end goal of the union between God and the soul and the union
- 29:25between individual Christians. He offers a very clear warning
- 29:28here. What's the warning?
- 29:29He says, if we are under the influence of a contrary spirit,
- 29:32if we are ruled by internal bitterness or outward hatred, we
- 29:35cannot expect to have the sensible peace of God resting
- 29:38upon us. He.
- 29:39Concludes the notes by bringing it all back to the sensation of
- 29:42the soul. He writes in the lively exercise
- 29:44of this spirit of peace and love tends to give that other sort of
- 29:47sensible peace, the one that consists in hope.
- 29:50And his final line in the notes is a quote for perfect peace
- 29:53casts out fear. It's a brilliant synthesis of
- 29:56the entire theological framework.
- 29:58The objective reality of the legal peace secures the
- 30:01immovable foundation which allows the Holy Spirit to
- 30:04generate the sensible peace within the soul, which
- 30:07systematically begins to dismantle and cast out the
- 30:10internal fears and anxieties of the individual.
- 30:12We have travelled a massive intellectual and spiritual
- 30:15distance today through Edward's thought process on Romans 5.1.
- 30:20We have seen a vision of peace that originates in the eternal
- 30:23mind of the Father, is purchased by the physical blood of the
- 30:26Son, and is actively applied by the Holy Spirit.
- 30:29It's an incredible framework. We have seen that this piece
- 30:31provides an infinite defense, aligning the entire physical
- 30:35universe, from the stars in the sky to the stones on the ground
- 30:37for your ultimate good. And it leaves absolutely no room
- 30:40for superficial comfort or cheap grace.
- 30:43It demands absolute conviction of sin and irreconcilable war
- 30:47with darkness and a total reliance on the great High
- 30:49priest. But in return, it offers an
- 30:52anchor to the soul that can withstand the fiercest storms of
- 30:55human existence. As we wrap up this deep dive
- 30:58into the source material, consider that concluding line
- 31:00from Edwards again. For perfect peace casts out
- 31:04fear, think about the X-ray machine we talked about at the
- 31:07very beginning of the show. We started by looking for a
- 31:10clear objective scan of our internal state.
- 31:13And Edwards has provided that scan.
- 31:14He has. He has shown us the objective
- 31:17legal reality of this piece. If this rigorous, objective,
- 31:20legal reality means the entire universe, including the very
- 31:23stones, water and fire, is aligned by a friendly director
- 31:27for your good, what physical or social anxiety in your daily
- 31:31life can possibly remain A legitimate threat?
- 31:33That's a question worth pondering.
- 31:35I invite you to weigh your daily fears against the sheer massive
- 31:38weight of this cosmic anchor. When you look at the X-ray of
- 31:42your standing before God through the lens of this text, the
- 31:45jagged lines of your own failures are gone, replaced by
- 31:48the solid, unbreakable reality of the Prince of Peace.
- 31:51Thank you for joining us today. We will see you next time on
- 31:54reformed thinking.
