- 0:06Speaker 1: On the Afternoon Drive with Jake Wimberly.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Oh, this is going to be sweet.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And it's all right here, right now. On ESPN 105.9

- 1:07Speaker 1: This is the real week zero, right? I kept saying
- 1:10Speaker 1: last week, this is the real week. Yes, this is
- 1:13Speaker 1: the real week zero. And of course, we're glad to
- 1:15Speaker 1: be with you on a Monday as we get into
- 1:18Speaker 1: week zero of college football. Also week one of all
- 1:22Speaker 1: of high school football. The National Football League in their
- 1:25Speaker 1: last weekend of preseason games, which will be probably a snoozer.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But we're here, and football is here, and we're glad

- 2:05Speaker 1: David Murray will join us at 3.30. We'll get caught
- 2:07Speaker 1: up on Mississippi State. They ought to be, I guess,
- 2:10Speaker 1: getting ready to play a ballgame, right? I mean, you're
- 2:12Speaker 1: two weeks out. That's probably installs is already going on.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So we'll talk to David Murray. Also, Chris Landry, 5
- 2:19Speaker 1: to 5.30. How are you? You said it was, is
- 2:21Speaker 1: it cool? I haven't been outside in three hours.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Man, it is 77 degrees outside.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Really?
- 2:26Speaker 1: Is the rain still coming down?
- 2:27Speaker 4: Nope.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So I text my mother, who's back on the home place,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and she said we got rain for like several hours,
- 2:35Speaker 1: which is good because it's a powder house out there.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And I've been trying to grow grass for three weeks
- 2:39Speaker 1: on a hillside. There's no telling what the water bill
- 2:42Speaker 1: is going to be, just sprinklers every night. So I'm
- 2:45Speaker 1: glad of this. This is good. Good weekend? Did we
- 2:50Speaker 1: sell a lot of jewelry? It was okay. It was
- 2:54Speaker 1: an okay Friday night. So will we still do, like
- 2:57Speaker 1: this week, high school football kicks off? Y'all still going
- 2:59Speaker 1: to battle high school football and all that?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Well, not this week because I'll have to be here
- 3:03Speaker 3: showing a new person how to run an MRA football game.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But after that, you'll be back on jewelry selling on
- 3:11Speaker 1: Friday nights? Yeah, probably.
- 3:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So your favorite quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, may have a new destination.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And it would make sense. Have you seen this? Texas Tech.
- 3:24Speaker 1: is going in on Thomas Castellanos. Can you believe this?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Of course they are. Texas Tech needs a quarterback. Thomas Castellanos,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the former Florida State quarterback, who said he would beat Alabama,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and they did. And then he did nothing else the
- 3:38Speaker 1: rest of the year. Not much of anything else. It
- 3:41Speaker 1: looks like they're an early leader because he's filed a
- 3:45Speaker 1: suit with the NCAA or against the NCAA to come
- 3:48Speaker 1: back to college football and Texas Tech is the leader
- 3:50Speaker 1: in the clubhouse. Now, this isn't official, but That's a
- 3:54Speaker 1: very interesting fit here with week zero coming up and
- 3:58Speaker 1: then with week one, you know, right down the chute
- 4:03Speaker 1: next week. So we'll see where Thomas Castellanos lines up.
- 4:08Speaker 1: All right, let me get some, there's several notes out here.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Alabama has chosen Keylon Russell to be their starting quarterback.
- 4:16Speaker 1: This was kind of coming out in reports over the
- 4:19Speaker 1: last week or two, the former five-star quarterback. is the
- 4:22Speaker 1: highest-rated recruit in Alabama football history. So can Keylon Russell
- 4:27Speaker 1: pick Alabama up and put them where they need to be?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Did you see Harrison Butker hit a 69-yard field goal?
- 4:35Speaker 1: That thing hit the net, by the way. That means
- 4:37Speaker 1: it would have been good from, like, 75. I mean,
- 4:40Speaker 1: has he always had that kind of leg? He's good.
- 4:44Speaker 3: He's been solid, yes.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Man, he is really good. Also, I didn't even know
- 4:48Speaker 1: this guy was still playing football. Georgia Southern has named
- 4:51Speaker 1: Max Johnson as starting quarterback. Max Johnson's been playing football
- 4:54Speaker 1: for 20 years, it seems like, in college. Formerly of
- 4:57Speaker 1: Texas A & M, formerly of North Carolina and LSU. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: he will be the starting quarterback at Georgia Southern. Also,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you got something over there? Okay. Also, Tennessee has named
- 5:12Speaker 1: true freshman five-star Fazion Brandon. It's starting quarterback. So a
- 5:16Speaker 1: five-star true freshman will start for the Tennessee Vols starting
- 5:21Speaker 1: next week. And Walker Jones, the executive director, former Ole
- 5:27Speaker 1: Miss Rebel, of the Grove Collective, said Ole Miss had
- 5:30Speaker 1: FBI sweeping buildings for bugs after Lane Kiffin left for LSU.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Walker was looking under his desk when someone asked what
- 5:39Speaker 1: he was doing. He said, just trust me, you don't
- 5:41Speaker 1: know that guy like I do. Isn't that interesting? The
- 5:46Speaker 1: further down the road we get, it seems like this
- 5:48Speaker 1: was a very fractured relationship, wasn't it? Walker Jones calling
- 5:53Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin out, and we'll get deeper into that story. Also,
- 5:56Speaker 1: Brett McMurphy has his Week Zero college football playoff projections out.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I want to get into this and see what Brett
- 6:02Speaker 1: McMurphy has as we head to Week Zero. Will you
- 6:04Speaker 1: watch any football this week, like Week Zero?
- 6:09Speaker 3: I will look at Memphis. Yeah, I'm going to look
- 6:14Speaker 3: at Memphis UNLV. I'll check in on the Dublin game because,
- 6:19Speaker 3: you know, it's kind of overall I don't care. But
- 6:23Speaker 3: the Dublin setting, it's kind of neat. I care nothing
- 6:28Speaker 3: about the game, though. So when I say I'll look
- 6:30Speaker 3: at it, you know, that only means for a couple
- 6:31Speaker 3: of minutes. But overall, I don't really care that much.
- 6:37Speaker 3: But Memphis would be the team I'm most interested in
- 6:39Speaker 3: looking at.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Let's see. We got, what, seven ballgames? One, two, three, four, five, seven.
- 6:47Speaker 1: North Carolina, I believe the Dublin, they're going to get killed.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Are they not? How are they not going to get killed?
- 6:54Speaker 1: They take on TCU. TCU is an eight and a
- 6:56Speaker 1: half point favorite this weekend. USC is a 38 point
- 7:00Speaker 1: favorite over San Jose State this weekend. That's a two
- 7:02Speaker 1: o'clock kick. Virginia is hosting NC State. Virginia is a
- 7:07Speaker 1: five and a half point favorite. Jacksonville State, North Dakota State,
- 7:11Speaker 1: North Dakota State, their first ever ball game as a
- 7:14Speaker 1: division one program. They'll take on Jacksonville State. North Dakota
- 7:17Speaker 1: State's a seven-point favorite. Sacramento State in their first-ever Division
- 7:22Speaker 1: I game against Eastern Michigan on the road. They are
- 7:25Speaker 1: a 10-point dog. And Hawaii is taking on Stanford at
- 7:30Speaker 1: 6 o'clock at Stanford this coming up Saturday. Stanford's a
- 7:33Speaker 1: five-and-a-half-point favorite. And did I get one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 7:39Speaker 1: eight games. New Mexico State's at Florida State. Florida State's
- 7:42Speaker 1: a 31-point favorite. Six-o'clock kick on Saturday night. And the
- 7:45Speaker 1: Memphis UNLV game, that's a not. No. West Coast after
- 7:50Speaker 1: dark or whatever you want to call it. Old Pac-12
- 7:52Speaker 1: after dark. Five-and-a-half point favorite. Dan Mullen versus Memphis. This
- 7:55Speaker 1: feels like a game that Dan Mullen would probably lose.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Opening weekend against a Memphis Charles Huff, first-time head football
- 8:03Speaker 1: coach at Memphis. That didn't feel like Mullen would lose
- 8:06Speaker 1: this game. He's expected to win his conference. Why not
- 8:08Speaker 1: come out the gate 0-1? Dog-tired Florence. Are these last
- 8:14Speaker 1: two scores for real? Let's see. Clarion Ledger, Southeast Lauderdale, three.
- 8:20Speaker 1: West Lauderdale, nothing.
- 8:21Speaker 2: St.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Patrick, Catholic, two. Richland, nothing. I don't know that they're real.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I would say that maybe they're real. The Southeast Lauderdale,
- 8:31Speaker 1: West Lauderdale score probably is real at three to nothing. Remember,
- 8:36Speaker 1: the MHSAA, everybody played a preseason game in there. mhsa
- 8:42Speaker 1: this past week and a lot of your jamboree like
- 8:46Speaker 1: i'll just tell you this i'll give you example brandon
- 8:48Speaker 1: played warren central that was a 14-7 quote warren central
- 8:52Speaker 1: victory but all of the scoring from both sides were
- 8:56Speaker 1: from the juniors like the the underclassmen that was the
- 9:00Speaker 1: twos and threes playing the ones played to a zero
- 9:03Speaker 1: zero tie but they only played two quarters and running
- 9:06Speaker 1: clock So everybody plays these weird games, these preseason games differently.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So I would say that's probably real. Now, St. Patrick
- 9:12Speaker 1: Catholic in Richton, I have no idea. You see anything on,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I mean, that's a baseball, maybe that's a baseball score
- 9:19Speaker 1: thrown in there. Or maybe it was just a safety,
- 9:22Speaker 1: just one safety. Hey, we're brought to you by Dwayne
- 9:25Speaker 1: Atkinson and Small Town Hunting Properties and Real Estate. Let
- 9:28Speaker 1: Dwayne help you with Small Town Hunting Properties and Real
- 9:30Speaker 1: Estate as well.
- 9:31Speaker 2: 601-832-3075.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That's 601-832-3075. They can help you move property if you're

- 9:49Speaker 1: Small Town Hunting Properties and Real Estate. It is Monday.
- 9:52Speaker 1: David Murray will join us in 20 minutes.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Good afternoon. Good afternoon.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And welcome back to the Afternoon Drive with Jake Wimmer.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Where he's talking about anything and everything that's Mississippi sports.
- 10:01Speaker 2: No, great afternoon.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Right here on ESPN 105.9 The Zone and online.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Worldwide.
- 10:05Speaker 1: On The Zone, 105.9.com. Dub season's almost here. You want
- 10:23Speaker 1: to make sure you get out to Vans Outdoors and
- 10:24Speaker 1: shop around in Brandon. All the gear, all the ammunition, buckets, coolers, yetis, clothing,
- 10:32Speaker 1: everything you need. Go to VansOutdoors.com and go check them
- 10:35Speaker 1: out in Brandon. The real unnamed texter on the Cowboy
- 10:37Speaker 1: Maloney's text line sends us a snapshot of Todd Munkin saying,
- 10:41Speaker 1: ain't this blank crazy? I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached
- 10:44Speaker 1: out a week ago. Now I know I didn't call him.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Now I know I didn't call him back, so I
- 10:49Speaker 1: guess I should have. This is in regards to former
- 10:52Speaker 1: Cleveland Brown headed to, looks like, Oxford. And it looks
- 10:56Speaker 1: like Lane Kiffin's going to get a couple of these guys.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Matt Zenich reporting 29 minutes ago, LSU is currently expected
- 11:03Speaker 1: to add former New Orleans Saints and ex-Ole Miss star
- 11:06Speaker 1: defensive lineman Zabion Harris, 6'8, 330-pounder, who was an All-SEC
- 11:11Speaker 1: selection at Ole Miss last season. What do you think
- 11:15Speaker 1: about all this? I haven't really asked you that. But
- 11:17Speaker 1: what do you think about these guys in the NFL
- 11:19Speaker 1: now coming back to college this year? It's really stupid.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I hate it.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's dumb.
- 11:25Speaker 3: It's dumb as hell. Same as when it was happening
- 11:29Speaker 3: in basketball earlier this spring.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I didn't think, and shame on me, because why would
- 11:37Speaker 3: I think this wasn't where we were heading? I didn't
- 11:40Speaker 3: think it would hit football for some reason.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And some people are saying, well, it's just one year.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Is it?
- 11:48Speaker 1: I mean, I know they've got the new rule in place.
- 11:51Speaker 1: You know, if you graduate now moving forward, if you've
- 11:53Speaker 1: got five to play five, if you're 19 or whatever
- 11:56Speaker 1: the two criterion is. But is it really?
- 12:01Speaker 3: That's exactly what I was thinking last week, because, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 3: some people were trying to point out, well, yeah, exactly
- 12:06Speaker 3: what you said. This is only for the class of 2022.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But we know how this goes. Somewhere, someone will.
- 12:18Speaker 1: It's the old saying, open up the floodgates.
- 12:20Speaker 3: They will try to find this is like when, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 3: everything's got to be retroactive because because in 2021, when
- 12:28Speaker 3: NIL was made legal, first move from just an example,
- 12:35Speaker 3: first move from Ohio State fans.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Well, we got to go back and get our 2011.
- 12:38Speaker 3: The players that were suspended, that should be that should
- 12:44Speaker 3: be taken back.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You know, remember that? Oh, yeah. But because something is
- 12:48Speaker 3: legal now, we decide, well, it should have been legal
- 12:51Speaker 3: five years ago. It should have been legal 15 years ago. So, no,
- 12:55Speaker 3: it's not surprising and it'll happen in the future. Someone's
- 12:59Speaker 3: going to try to use this. Well, we should get it, too.
- 13:02Speaker 3: They'll try to find loopholes.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I have zero faith that this will be just a
- 13:05Speaker 1: one year. There'll be lawsuits to fight next year. This
- 13:10Speaker 1: the sport has become lawsuit crazy. Lawsuit crazy. Brett McMurphy,
- 13:15Speaker 1: his week zero college football playoff and bowl picks. Here
- 13:18Speaker 1: we go. Let's get into some of these. Before I
- 13:21Speaker 1: do that, let me get these texts real quick. Miko,
- 13:23Speaker 1: did JUCO years count against the five? Now, I don't
- 13:25Speaker 1: think so. I'll confirm that, but I don't think the
- 13:28Speaker 1: JUCOs count against that. I think you still got the
- 13:31Speaker 1: JUCOs and they still have five to play five. Bill, Jake,
- 13:35Speaker 1: there is no such thing as college football anymore. Sure,
- 13:39Speaker 1: colleges have their brands on some of these professional teams.
- 13:43Speaker 1: slash semi-pro teams, but that doesn't make them a college team.
- 13:48Speaker 1: There's no more college football. You have colleges buying proteins,
- 13:54Speaker 1: or I think even players. That's all there is to it. Well, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 1: it's not amateur football. It's just not amateur football anymore.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Is there anything amateur about it?
- 14:02Speaker 5: No, no.
- 14:04Speaker 3: The quarterback at Villanova, Pat McQuaid, he's in a situation
- 14:08Speaker 3: now where they're saying he's out of eligibility because League
- 14:13Speaker 3: were they in the Patriot League? Yeah, I think it
- 14:15Speaker 3: was the Patriot League was saying he's out of eligibility
- 14:19Speaker 3: because he played one season at.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It was here.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I want to say it was at Gulf Coast Community College,
- 14:28Speaker 3: but they're saying, no, we're going to count that Juco
- 14:31Speaker 3: year in Mississippi against you. And from what I understand,
- 14:38Speaker 3: that league came out and said, if he takes one snap,
- 14:43Speaker 3: then Villanova will forfeit that game.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Wow.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:46Speaker 1: So there is that. And I'm looking up, let's see.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I lied. Yes, junior colleges. Well, let's see. I'm getting
- 14:54Speaker 1: contradictory reports here. I have to find out on the
- 14:56Speaker 1: junior college. If it does count, five to play five.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Possum Neck Joe. Oh, yeah, you're right, Beaver. There's going
- 15:03Speaker 1: to be a 30-year-old ex-NFL player back in college before
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know it. That's the way it looks. I mean,
- 15:09Speaker 1: that's the way it looks. Nobody has any faith in
- 15:11Speaker 1: the system right now. Zero faith. All right, Brett McMurphy,
- 15:15Speaker 1: college football, playoff predictions. He has UNLV as a 12,
- 15:19Speaker 1: taking on 5C Texas Tech. Number 9, Oklahoma versus number 8, Texas.
- 15:25Speaker 1: That would be a rematch of the Red River Shootout.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Number 11, Washington. I've been seeing some Washington push here
- 15:34Speaker 1: in the preseason. Not that that matters. There's some Washington love.
- 15:38Speaker 1: At number 6, Miami. Number 10, BYU.
- 15:39Speaker 5: At....
- 15:42Speaker 1: No. 7, Indiana. So that means two Big 12 teams.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And I've seen a couple of these in here. Fiesta Bowl, No. 2, Oregon,
- 15:49Speaker 1: taking on No. 7, Indiana. No. 4, Notre Dame, taking
- 15:53Speaker 1: on No. 5, Texas Tech. No. 1, Ohio State, taking
- 15:56Speaker 1: on No. 8, Texas. No. 3, Georgia, taking on Miami
- 16:00Speaker 1: in the semifinals. Redman Burpee has Oregon versus Georgia. And
- 16:05Speaker 1: Ohio State versus Texas Tech. And the National Championship, Ohio
- 16:08Speaker 1: State versus Oregon, with Oregon winning the national title. That's
- 16:12Speaker 1: Brett McMurphy week zero. He'll do these every week. That's
- 16:15Speaker 1: his week zero projections. Uh, let's see here and looking
- 16:20Speaker 1: through some of these other bowl games. Let me see
- 16:24Speaker 1: those that you care about. How about the cure bowl
- 16:26Speaker 1: on Orlando Tulane versus James Madison? Everybody cares about that
- 16:29Speaker 1: army versus Kansas and the armed forces bowl. Also Michigan
- 16:33Speaker 1: Clemson and the Duke's Mayo bowl. We've got, uh, Auburn,
- 16:38Speaker 1: Wisconsin and the Birmingham bowl. Seen several slight Auburn or
- 16:42Speaker 1: move Auburn, slot them to the Birmingham Bowl. I'm sure
- 16:45Speaker 1: their fans would be ecstatic about that. Texas A &
- 16:48Speaker 1: M versus SMU in the Gator Bowl. LSU, Minnesota in
- 16:52Speaker 1: the Music City Bowl. LSU fans didn't pay Lane Kiffin
- 16:55Speaker 1: to go to the Music City Bowl. All right, let's
- 16:57Speaker 1: go to the Mississippi Sports Medicine call line. Let's go
- 16:59Speaker 1: to Gator Matt. Matt, happy Monday.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Hello, Matt.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Oh, well, he's coming back. All right, let's see. Tennessee
- 17:08Speaker 1: versus Illinois in the Reliquist Bowl. Alabama, USC in the
- 17:13Speaker 1: Las Vegas Bowl. Neither fan base will be happy about
- 17:17Speaker 1: that at all. Missouri, Kansas State in the Texas Bowl.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Ole Miss, Penn State in the Citrus Bowl. Florida versus
- 17:24Speaker 1: Oklahoma State in the Liberty Bowl. Get Matt back on.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Let's see if he's ready to go to Memphis. And
- 17:30Speaker 1: the Holiday Bowl, Pitt versus Arizona State. So there's Brett
- 17:35Speaker 1: McMurphy's week zero. bold projections we're trying to get Gator
- 17:39Speaker 1: Matt in here now Matt welcome in how are you.
- 17:42Speaker 2: If you're an LSU fan you should be embarrassed I
- 17:47Speaker 2: mean Jake am I am I all face here what
- 17:50Speaker 2: what a slimy university they're terrible I mean not only
- 17:57Speaker 2: academically are they about as bad as you can get
- 17:59Speaker 2: I mean if we're off academics they'd be kicked out
- 18:03Speaker 2: they're awful I mean, let's not.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Talk about the basketball program, which is just two creeps,
- 18:13Speaker 6: whatever that chick's name is, and then this guy they
- 18:15Speaker 6: got now who's just trying to go out and get
- 18:18Speaker 6: nothing but NBA. I mean, they're just awful.
- 18:20Speaker 2: He plays for the Browns, Jake.
- 18:23Speaker 5: I mean, what are we doing?
- 18:25Speaker 1: And then I.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Come to find out, I don't know if you guys
- 18:27Speaker 5: have touched on this, but apparently.
- 18:30Speaker 2: They're selling 10% of their media right to a private
- 18:34Speaker 2: equity firm for Jake, do you.
- 18:36Speaker 7: Ever play poker?
- 18:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Do you ever play cards? Yes. Well, when
- 18:40Speaker 2: people drag a light on a pot, that means they're
- 18:43Speaker 2: trying to participate with money they don't have.
- 18:45Speaker 6: And that's what LSU... Just slimy. Just awful.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I mean, if I'm an LSU fan.
- 18:51Speaker 4: You should be embarrassed.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Now, am I a little salty that Lane, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 2: played footsies with Florida for the last two years and
- 19:01Speaker 2: then went to LSU?
- 19:03Speaker 4: A little.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But I'll be honest with you, Jake.
- 19:06Speaker 6: I think we dodged a hell of a bullet.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I really do. Because that guy, if I'm an LSU fan,
- 19:13Speaker 2: let me tell you something. If you don't win nine
- 19:16Speaker 2: games this year, oh, Jake. I mean, but anyway, Kevin's
- 19:22Speaker 2: the biggest villain in all of sports. LSU, if you're
- 19:26Speaker 2: a fan, I wouldn't really advertise that. But anyway, Aaron
- 19:30Speaker 2: Follow for Heisman.
- 19:31Speaker 4: See you.
- 19:32Speaker 1: See you. Stay on the phones. Let's get it ready, Teddy. Teddy,
- 19:35Speaker 1: happy Monday.
- 19:37Speaker 7: Gator Matt's 100% right about the private equity stuff. That
- 19:42Speaker 7: is insane to do that. And the fact that it's
- 19:46Speaker 7: money you don't have. Anyway, Jake, how does it feel
- 19:50Speaker 7: for your show, The Afternoon Drive, when your caller said
- 19:55Speaker 7: this was exactly Lane Kiffin and a Louisiana judge on
- 19:58Speaker 7: your show last week? I told you that's what this was.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Well, it feels that way for sure, right?
- 20:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, it's basically, well, who do we believe?
- 20:08Speaker 7: With the resumes of talking, do we believe Todd Munkin
- 20:11Speaker 7: that Lane called, or do we believe Lane Kiffin that
- 20:14Speaker 7: he didn't call?
- 20:16Speaker 1: Oh, at this point, I'm sure he did call.
- 20:19Speaker 7: Yeah, or had someone call.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:21Speaker 7: Yeah, but Lane said that there's some inaccuracies in that story,
- 20:27Speaker 7: so I guess he had an underling call, so that
- 20:29Speaker 7: way he could say it wasn't him calling, but yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 7: it all stinks to high heaven, but we just got
- 20:35Speaker 7: to deal with it, and I'm with you. I don't
- 20:37Speaker 7: think it's going to be a one-year thing. I think
- 20:38Speaker 7: it's every person that doesn't make an NFL roster and
- 20:41Speaker 7: some that even might make an NFL roster and make
- 20:43Speaker 7: it in the league minimum are going to come back.
- 20:45Speaker 7: But eventually, we don't know when. LSU is kind of
- 20:48Speaker 7: showing us the way of how it's going to end
- 20:51Speaker 7: or get corralled is going to be by going the
- 20:53Speaker 7: private equity route because they.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Don't have the money.
- 20:55Speaker 7: And they're not the only ones that have the money.
- 20:57Speaker 7: None of us have the money. Most schools have the
- 20:58Speaker 7: money to keep this up long term. They just don't.
- 21:03Speaker 7: It doesn't generate enough money. per team to pay out
- 21:06Speaker 7: Ole Miss. And Ole Miss's roster is, what, 36 million
- 21:08Speaker 7: this year? We can't come at that again next year
- 21:11Speaker 7: and the year after, especially if they keep going up
- 21:12Speaker 7: 50% every year. All right, man.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Thank y'all.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Thanks, Teddy. Appreciate it. No, you're right. The prices just
- 21:17Speaker 1: continue to go up. We've doubled since Ohio State won
- 21:21Speaker 1: the national title a couple years ago on a $ 25
- 21:22Speaker 1: million roster reported by Sports Business Journal and others. We're

- 22:42Speaker 1: and more clean with Janny King. David Murray on your radio.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Gene's page, 247sports. com. Talking Mississippi State football. Bulldogs getting close
- 22:52Speaker 1: to game week. David, welcome in, sir.
- 22:53Speaker 4: How are you?
- 22:55Speaker 5: Jake, man, good to hear from y'all on this Monday afternoon.
- 22:58Speaker 5: We're inside the official two-week countdown mark for... football season
- 23:04Speaker 5: starting up. I think a week from Thursday, Missouri's playing,
- 23:08Speaker 5: and it's here. Ready or not, it is here.
- 23:12Speaker 1: No, it is. It is absolutely here. David, I'll go first.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Injuries.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Any injury news to talk about or not for Mississippi State?
- 23:21Speaker 5: Are not is probably a better way to put it.
- 23:23Speaker 5: We spoke with Jeff Levy following the Saturday scrimmage. and
- 23:27Speaker 5: that's the last contact we've had anybody from Bulldog Football.
- 23:31Speaker 5: We'll actually get to talk to some players tomorrow. Whereas
- 23:35Speaker 5: after the first scrimmage, he was complimenting the team for
- 23:38Speaker 5: surviving the conditions and all. He didn't make any health
- 23:41Speaker 5: statements yesterday. Now, you can read into that whatever you
- 23:44Speaker 5: want to or not, but it did not seem to
- 23:47Speaker 5: be an area of concern for Levy in his post-scrimmage.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And.
- 23:53Speaker 5: A number of M Club members were able to attend.
- 23:56Speaker 5: We've seen some various posts and stuff, and they don't
- 23:58Speaker 5: seem to report any injuries during it as well. So
- 24:01Speaker 5: as far as health goes, the Bulldogs should be in
- 24:03Speaker 5: great shape. I know I've been looking around the SEC
- 24:07Speaker 5: programs for what's happening there, and some places are having
- 24:10Speaker 5: some pretty interesting injuries already in the season. So fingers
- 24:14Speaker 5: crossed the Bulldogs should be in good shape to begin
- 24:16Speaker 5: the year if nobody goes the wrong way in the
- 24:19Speaker 5: next 10 days.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Devin, I did see something come across the wire. Correct
- 24:23Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong. It was Aiden Williams. Is he
- 24:24Speaker 1: still a little banged up?
- 24:26Speaker 5: He is, but he's had trouble staying fully healthy ever
- 24:29Speaker 5: since he got here. But he remains in that top
- 24:32Speaker 5: six receiver rotation that Jeff Lee was talking about. In fact,
- 24:35Speaker 5: we asked about it. And he still listed Aiden. I
- 24:38Speaker 5: didn't mention that he is a little slowed down right now.
- 24:41Speaker 5: But he went ahead and left him in his top
- 24:44Speaker 5: six and then added three more younger guys– obviously Cameron
- 24:48Speaker 5: Capehart and Zion Crumpton and others. So it looks like
- 24:52Speaker 5: the receiver core is going to be at least nine
- 24:54Speaker 5: deep at this point. And I'm talking true wide receivers,
- 24:57Speaker 5: not just tight ends and running backs as well. So
- 24:59Speaker 5: I think they can handle that situation. Now, Williams is
- 25:02Speaker 5: one of the more physical receivers. It's not a big
- 25:05Speaker 5: imposing group by a stretch, but we're going to find
- 25:08Speaker 5: out when the season really gets going, all the speed
- 25:13Speaker 5: everybody's talked about, including the defensive players, praising the speed
- 25:16Speaker 5: on the offensive side and the receivers. We're going to
- 25:18Speaker 5: find out if that's real or not once they see
- 25:20Speaker 5: an opponent on the field.
- 25:22Speaker 1: David Murray talking Mississippi State football. And, of course, get
- 25:25Speaker 1: them at jeanspage247sports. com. David, any notes on the offensive line
- 25:31Speaker 1: as we get closer to kickoff?
- 25:33Speaker 5: I think the first five is pretty well settled at
- 25:36Speaker 5: this point with Myles McVay and Jakeem Shumpert at the
- 25:40Speaker 5: opposite tackle positions, DJ Chester and LJ Prudhomme. at the
- 25:45Speaker 5: guard positions and Ken Boone, of course, as your center.
- 25:48Speaker 5: So notice, of course, that three of those transfers, one's
- 25:51Speaker 5: a redshirt junior college guy and one's a true senior
- 25:54Speaker 5: out there. So it's another case, as is so typical
- 25:58Speaker 5: of the last several years, where Mississippi State's offensive starting
- 26:01Speaker 5: line going into the year is going to be pretty
- 26:03Speaker 5: much dominated by transfers again, which is the reason why
- 26:07Speaker 5: they keep going back and forth to the portal, because
- 26:09Speaker 5: that's just what you've got to do. You know, we
- 26:12Speaker 5: can argue about the merits of trying to be a
- 26:14Speaker 5: development program in certain positions, and historically, offensive line required
- 26:20Speaker 5: the most development. I'm just not sure that the development
- 26:24Speaker 5: paradigm works quite as well now with the free transfer
- 26:27Speaker 5: availability and guys just looking for playing time as well.
- 26:30Speaker 5: But they rolled the dice again on the portal, and now,
- 26:34Speaker 5: of course, I think with Phil Voholt, a second year
- 26:37Speaker 5: in the offense, having better bodies to work with, and
- 26:41Speaker 5: the return of Mason Miller. I do not want to
- 26:43Speaker 5: underrate that. Getting Coach Miller back to work specifically with
- 26:47Speaker 5: the offensive line as well, I think that's going to
- 26:49Speaker 5: do really good things for the front line. And as
- 26:52Speaker 5: we've said maybe a time or 20 since 2026, everything
- 26:57Speaker 5: about this season hinges on Mississippi State's offensive line to
- 27:00Speaker 5: give Kamario Taylor and a really talented bunch of running
- 27:03Speaker 5: backs and receivers the chances to do what they're capable
- 27:06Speaker 5: of doing.
- 27:08Speaker 1: David, any other scrimmage notes or news that you want
- 27:11Speaker 1: to pass along that may be interesting news for Mississippi
- 27:15Speaker 1: State people and then not Mississippi State people?
- 27:18Speaker 5: Well, by all indications, the aggressive approach they've turned loose
- 27:22Speaker 5: on defense. And I go back to spring ball when
- 27:26Speaker 5: one of the players just came out and said, well,
- 27:27Speaker 5: we don't really have assignments or gaps anymore. Well, that
- 27:30Speaker 5: was overstating the case. They do have traditional integrity ideas
- 27:36Speaker 5: in their positions to begin with. But aggression has taken
- 27:40Speaker 5: the fore, and I think that's showing up really well
- 27:43Speaker 5: on the defensive side. First off, it plays their mentality.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Whatever else has happened in recruiting in recent years, they've
- 27:51Speaker 5: brought in a bunch of defensive guys who really like
- 27:53Speaker 5: to play in attack mode rather than a kind of sit-back,
- 27:57Speaker 5: stand-and-take-it mode like they were in the past two seasons.
- 28:00Speaker 5: So Zach Arnett's approach is playing. But I think they
- 28:03Speaker 5: have better bodies, too. If Will Whitson remains healthy... That's
- 28:07Speaker 5: a big stout guy with mobility on one end, got
- 28:10Speaker 5: Amari Williams coming off the other end. I think the
- 28:13Speaker 5: pass rush game, it may not show in sacks specifically,
- 28:18Speaker 5: but I think it's going to show in hurries. I
- 28:20Speaker 5: think it's going to throw in quicker decisions made by
- 28:23Speaker 5: the offense to get rid of the ball and thus
- 28:26Speaker 5: more opportunities for getting off the field or getting turnovers
- 28:29Speaker 5: as well. I just think this defensive mindset is playing
- 28:33Speaker 5: well with this particular group of players. and the fact
- 28:36Speaker 5: that now you've got more healthy bodies in the front line.
- 28:38Speaker 5: I still want to see if Calvin Dinkins is up
- 28:41Speaker 5: to full speed going into the season, maybe some concerns
- 28:43Speaker 5: about his point. But he's not a guy that's struggled
- 28:46Speaker 5: to stay healthy his whole career. But I like the
- 28:49Speaker 5: additions they have. I think Trevion Williams is back at
- 28:52Speaker 5: home playing interior now. I think he's going to really
- 28:56Speaker 5: blossom here. One of those body-by-gods that you look at
- 28:59Speaker 5: and think, oh, when is it all going to click?
- 29:01Speaker 5: I think it's the year it clicks for Bam Bam. And,
- 29:04Speaker 5: you know, goodness knows I like what I hear about
- 29:06Speaker 5: the secondary, not just Kelly Jones and Jet Jefferson. But
- 29:10Speaker 5: you see how the safeties, Isaac Smith now playing more
- 29:13Speaker 5: of a true safety like he used to with Arnett.
- 29:17Speaker 5: You've got the transfers coming in. I just think this
- 29:19Speaker 5: defense as a whole is going to be able to
- 29:22Speaker 5: let it rip and take their chances. And, frankly, in
- 29:25Speaker 5: today's college game, I think that's how you have to
- 29:28Speaker 5: play it.
- 29:29Speaker 1: No, I would agree with you. I mean, if you've
- 29:30Speaker 1: got the guys on the back end that you feel
- 29:32Speaker 1: comfortable in and trust them in the coverage in the
- 29:35Speaker 1: third level of the defensive setup, then you've got your
- 29:38Speaker 1: guys up front. For Mississippi State, they desperately need that
- 29:41Speaker 1: pass rush. It was better last year, but to have
- 29:44Speaker 1: that even move forward in 2026.
- 29:45Speaker 5: Well, the pass rush, it was better statistically, but it
- 29:50Speaker 5: wasn't there when you had to have it. That's something
- 29:53Speaker 5: that can't be defined statistically, but much like special teams.
- 29:58Speaker 5: On paper, special teams were outstanding last year, but they
- 30:01Speaker 5: would have this one breakdown every week or so that
- 30:05Speaker 5: ended up being pivotal in games. That's what I'm talking
- 30:07Speaker 5: about more. It's not just something that shows on a
- 30:10Speaker 5: stat sheet. It's something that shows inconsistency and can you
- 30:14Speaker 5: count on them in these clutch situations or just in
- 30:19Speaker 5: a situation that you don't want to become clutch by
- 30:22Speaker 5: just taking care of routine business. I think they're going
- 30:25Speaker 5: to be better at that this year.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Make sure to get him on X. Check him out
- 30:29Speaker 1: at jeanspage247sports. com. Mississippi State etching towards or easing towards that
- 30:34Speaker 1: week one. David, when we talk next week, it will
- 30:35Speaker 1: be game week, sir.
- 30:38Speaker 5: And as always, it'll be a week until the opening
- 30:40Speaker 5: of dove season. We always have to get that in.
- 30:43Speaker 5: And a reminder, everybody, go shoot your birds in the morning,
- 30:46Speaker 5: then turn on out to Scott Field in the evening
- 30:49Speaker 5: and do your tailgating as well. You can take care
- 30:52Speaker 5: of both in Mississippi this time of year.
- 30:54Speaker 1: There is, no doubt, no doubt. Everybody needs to make
- 30:56Speaker 1: sure they do that. David, appreciate you as always. Have
- 30:58Speaker 1: a good week.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Jake, Ben, good to hear from you.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Thanks so much. David Murray on your radio brought to

- 31:17Speaker 1: 10 till noon, on Mississippi's live and local sports authority.
- 31:21Speaker 4: And where?
- 31:21Speaker 1: And now!
- 31:22Speaker 4: We're back to Jake Quiverley with the afternoon drive on
- 31:25Speaker 4: ESPN 105.9 The Zone and online at TheZone1059. com.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Appreciate David Murray jumping in. Brought to you by the
- 31:55Speaker 1: Gurkha Cigar Lounge at Ameristar. Get out, get you a smoke,
- 31:59Speaker 1: get you a cigar at the Gurkha. Enjoy it on
- 32:01Speaker 1: the property. Bring it to the house. Take it to
- 32:03Speaker 1: the dove field. Whatever you want to do with it.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Chris Landry will join us 5 to 530. Do you
- 32:08Speaker 1: think Mississippi State fans will forego week one to dove hunt?
- 32:13Speaker 1: Did you hear David? Get to the dove field and
- 32:14Speaker 1: then get to Davis Wade Stadium? Like, will Mississippi State
- 32:18Speaker 1: fans forego Louisiana Monroe for dove hunting on Saturday, a
- 32:22Speaker 1: week from Saturday?
- 32:25Speaker 3: I don't know. It'll be an interesting test to see
- 32:29Speaker 3: if all this talk of, oh man, it's baseball season. No,
- 32:36Speaker 3: it's baseball season. As if to say we're skipping football.
- 32:41Speaker 3: So it'll be interesting to see. I guess that'll test
- 32:44Speaker 3: out if you're actually telling the truth or not.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Some will. Theoretical.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Some will.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I don't think the overall majority. If you're a diehard...
- 32:56Speaker 1: love your team i don't think those will if dove
- 32:59Speaker 1: season and it is next weekend if it was the
- 33:03Speaker 1: first weekend of baseball season would any state fans miss
- 33:06Speaker 1: baseball for dove hunting no no it's not happening miko
- 33:11Speaker 1: talking about the juco stuff said uh got at the
- 33:14Speaker 1: juco impact full-time enrollment at a junior college starts your
- 33:18Speaker 1: five-year ncaa clock if you play two seasons at juco
- 33:21Speaker 1: then Two seasons count, leaving you with three seasons of eligibility,
- 33:25Speaker 1: remaining for the next three years for your clock when
- 33:27Speaker 1: you transfer to a four-year school. Thank you, sir. So
- 33:31Speaker 1: it does count. The Tennesseeman. The NFL has to just say,
- 33:34Speaker 1: you leave. You will not be eligible to play in
- 33:36Speaker 1: the NFL again. One and done. That will be on
- 33:39Speaker 1: the NFL contract. Well, it should have been what should
- 33:43Speaker 1: have happened. It used to be if you signed with
- 33:45Speaker 1: an agent and you were done. But somewhere along the way,
- 33:49Speaker 1: that went away. with the NCAA, talking about these players
- 33:53Speaker 1: and what they're doing. Coming back to the college ranks.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Yesterday was Wake Forest Jacob Dickert's 43rd birthday. He is
- 34:01Speaker 1: the head football coach, second youngest in the ACC, 26th
- 34:05Speaker 1: youngest in the FBS. Also, Washington State's Kirby Moore, 36th yesterday.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Pac-12's youngest head coach, second youngest overall in the FBS.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Ross Dellinger reporting earlier today. During a regularly scheduled preseason
- 34:21Speaker 1: practice news conference, Lane Kiffin addresses the eligibility situation, quote,
- 34:27Speaker 1: through players winning injunctions and entry into the portal, they
- 34:32Speaker 1: are available to recruit. Ourselves and many places around the
- 34:36Speaker 1: country are recruiting them. He goes on to say, because
- 34:40Speaker 1: of the rulings, they're going to play for you or
- 34:44Speaker 1: for someone else. We made the decision to recruit them.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It's wrong to be critical of these kids. They were
- 34:50Speaker 1: granted a fifth year, and a judge said they were wronged.
- 34:53Speaker 1: What do you think about Lane Kiffin now playing the
- 34:55Speaker 1: fiddle here?
- 34:55Speaker 3: Of course.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Of course these kids were wronged. And Lane Kiffin has said, hey, look,
- 35:01Speaker 1: somebody's got to recruit them. We're either going to recruit
- 35:04Speaker 1: them or somebody else is going to recruit them. So
- 35:07Speaker 1: we're going to recruit them. Kiffin also says, quote, these
- 35:09Speaker 1: players should have been told that they were going to
- 35:11Speaker 1: be eligible for a fifth year. Had they known that,
- 35:15Speaker 1: they would have stayed. and not sign pro contracts. Now,
- 35:18Speaker 1: how do we know that? You may end up having
- 35:20Speaker 1: hundreds of athletes told they have a fifth year. It's
- 35:23Speaker 1: a unique circumstance. Yeah, it's a circumstance that has opened
- 35:29Speaker 1: Pandora's box, so to speak. Also, Ross Dellinger will get
- 35:32Speaker 1: into this. Notable blue bloods are gearing up for a
- 35:36Speaker 1: possible coaching search, for many coaching searches, if losses mount up.
- 35:41Speaker 1: This year's carousel may eclipse a historic 2025 coaching surge,
- 35:45Speaker 1: but how quick will FSU move on it? How quick
- 35:49Speaker 1: will USC move on it? It's hot in Chapel Hill
- 35:52Speaker 1: as well. So we'll get into what the coaching carousel
- 35:56Speaker 1: may look like this year. Some are saying it could
- 35:58Speaker 1: be worse than 2025. Also, the Cleveland Browns have tabbed
- 36:03Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson. Quarterback number one, QB1. Quote, I understand the frustration.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And moving forward, I just want to focus on football
- 36:10Speaker 1: and make sure I'm putting the best product out there.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Any thoughts on Deshaun Watson being QB1 in Cleveland?
- 36:18Speaker 6: No.
- 36:18Speaker 3: This has been the most ridiculous of the quarterback battles.
- 36:24Speaker 6: The last.
- 36:26Speaker 3: I mean, just constant articles and stories about, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 3: it wasn't until last year with the Browns that I
- 36:33Speaker 3: really started noticing that we keep stats on practices in
- 36:41Speaker 3: training camp. Like every article I'm reading, well, Deshaun Watson
- 36:45Speaker 3: has thrown nine interceptions in his last 12 practices in
- 36:50Speaker 3: the last few weeks and his completion percentage in practice
- 36:54Speaker 3: in training camp was this, this, and this. Look, both
- 36:59Speaker 3: your options suck. Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders. First of all,
- 37:04Speaker 3: it's the Browns. No matter who's at quarterback, they're not
- 37:07Speaker 3: getting it right. With these two people, they're absolutely not
- 37:11Speaker 3: getting it right. They still owe Watson all that money.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Then he did it again. He stuck his foot in
- 37:18Speaker 3: his mouth again, talking about the fans, talking about they
- 37:21Speaker 3: booed him the other day because, well, that had nothing
- 37:24Speaker 3: to do with their performance. That was just personal. Well, yeah,
- 37:27Speaker 3: a big part of it was personal, but it's also
- 37:30Speaker 3: to do with your performance. You've started 19 games in
- 37:34Speaker 3: four years in Cleveland. And then those 19 games have
- 37:38Speaker 3: not really been that excellent. So, yeah, a little bit
- 37:43Speaker 3: of delusion there from Deshaun Watson. But it's not surprising.
- 37:46Speaker 3: At some point, he'll get injured because that's what he does.
- 37:49Speaker 3: And Shador Sanders will take over. So let's just wait
- 37:53Speaker 3: and see.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you just kind of told us what's
- 37:56Speaker 1: going to happen in Cleveland. Hey, did the 49ers owner
- 38:00Speaker 1: get arrested?
- 38:01Speaker 4: He did indeed.
- 38:02Speaker 1: What was he doing?
- 38:04Speaker 3: Well, it started out as two charges and they were
- 38:08Speaker 3: going to be prostitution related, but it got it. They
- 38:12Speaker 3: got whittled down to two misdemeanor charges for I think
- 38:15Speaker 3: it was disorderly conduct and having. What was the wording having?
- 38:22Speaker 3: I can't remember the wording, but basically having a weapon.
- 38:28Speaker 3: But the wording they used for this weapon, let me
- 38:31Speaker 3: go back because I got to get the exact wording
- 38:34Speaker 3: of this right because it's interesting.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Saints have a new kicker. The Saints are signing two-time
- 38:39Speaker 1: All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson. His agent at Range Sports RMP
- 38:45Speaker 1: tells Ian Rappaport, the former Raiders kicker, brings experience to
- 38:49Speaker 1: New Orleans, which has been holding a competition between Tanner
- 38:53Speaker 1: Brown and Charlie Smith, SMYTH. So the Saints sign an
- 38:59Speaker 1: all-pro kicker, Daniel Carson. Maybe they can get some field
- 39:02Speaker 1: goals in there this year in New Orleans. Also, let's
- 39:06Speaker 1: see here. Two SEC schools have emerged as frontrunners for
- 39:11Speaker 1: former NFL running back T.J. Harden. Harden played his college
- 39:16Speaker 1: football at SMU and UCLA. So it's just so weird
- 39:21Speaker 1: to read it like that. Two SEC schools have emerged
- 39:24Speaker 1: as a frontrunner for former NFL running back.
- 39:27Speaker 6: T.J.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Harden, which is just crazy. White Denzel. Criminal tools is
- 39:32Speaker 1: what the wording was. Criminal tools.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Yeah, possessing criminal tools. That was the charge, which they
- 39:39Speaker 3: said in Ohio, the criminal tools ranges wildly from... A
- 39:47Speaker 3: gun to a hammer to.
- 39:50Speaker 1: What did I see on there?
- 39:51Speaker 3: Nitroglycerin was on the list. But I believe what finally
- 39:57Speaker 3: came out is what they're referring to the criminal tool
- 39:59Speaker 3: as is the phone. His phone was a criminal tool
- 40:03Speaker 3: because it was used to arrange prostitution.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Interesting stuff. And DX, Mr. DX, yeah, criminal tools. More
- 40:12Speaker 1: on this and criminal tools. I've never heard this. Brought
