Two descendants of formerly enslaved people are suing the Muscogee Nation, demanding citizenship cards they’re legally entitled to under a 1866 treaty — a ruling already made by the tribal court last July. Despite that, tribal leaders have delayed issuing the cards, denying them voting rights and full participation. The tribe’s 1979 constitution restricts membership to blood descendants, but the court now says anyone tracing ancestry to either the Muscogee or Freedmen rolls should be granted citizenship — potentially opening the door for thousands.
