- 0:13cultivate a mindset that leads you to create the best version
- 0:16of yourself you could ever imagine.
- 0:18Join Kim every morning from one of her favorite happy places,
- 0:21her chicken coop, along with all her chickens.
- 0:29Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:31coop. So this morning I want to talk
- 0:33to you about Dottie. As you know, Dottie is.
- 0:35One of my favorite chickens. If you're a regular listener,
- 0:38yes, I do have favorites. And I'm not going to lie and say
- 0:41I don't. Because humans, we have
- 0:43favorites of things. We have favorite socks.
- 0:45We have favorite spoons, for crying out loud mugs.
- 0:47How many of us have a favorite mug?
- 0:49Well, guess what? Kim has favorite chickens too.
- 0:51And I can't help that. There are just some that have a
- 0:54personality more than others and Dottie happens to be one of
- 0:57them. So little Dottie has gone
- 1:00through a major, major purge of her feathers and when this
- 1:06process takes place, molting, it's called when molting takes
- 1:10place. It is just like every single bit
- 1:13comes off of them and it's usually they don't look quite so
- 1:18naked. But Dottie went through a major
- 1:20one it it was like she just decided to go right down to her
- 1:24skin and say OK, let's just start over now.
- 1:27The reason that this happens is basically because of the quality
- 1:30of feathers that they need to have.
- 1:33Feathers, who knew? Just they wear out.
- 1:35Their ability to keep them warm, cool, to help them regulate
- 1:39their body doesn't last the whole life of the chicken with
- 1:43one feather. That's why they constantly lose
- 1:45them. Like we lose hair, they lose
- 1:47feathers, but our hair doesn't have the same properties that
- 1:50the feathers do to protect us and their feathers are a big,
- 1:53big, huge protector. So unfortunately, Dottie loses
- 1:57most of her feathers all at the same time, and this also causes
- 2:01them to feel very vulnerable and scared in the world.
- 2:04Because now Dottie, who is at the top of the pecking order in
- 2:08the coop, now feels like she's very weak because she's not big
- 2:12looking. She doesn't have her same
- 2:14stamina, so she pushes off to the side.
- 2:17She's been sleeping by herself. She normally sleeps right with
- 2:20the rooster, but she's been sleeping by herself.
- 2:22You almost think that they're sick and their body is just
- 2:25going through a massive transformation.
- 2:27So why am I talking to you about this?
- 2:29Because here's the funny part about this.
- 2:31This is exactly what humans do. They go through something, They
- 2:35pull back, they contract, they separate themselves, They go
- 2:38into these emotional cocoons, physical cocoons, and and we
- 2:43wonder, like, you know, is this normal?
- 2:45Well, it's normal all throughout nature.
- 2:47It's, it is completely and totally normal, acceptable.
- 2:51And you have to expect it to happen to you at some point in
- 2:55time. That is the beautiful part of
- 2:57recognizing that. It's part of nature.
- 3:00We are 100% part of that nature. I saw a little picture the other
- 3:07day on one of the science pages that I follow and they cut this
- 3:10circle in half and half of it was filled with the rings of a
- 3:13tree, like a cross cut of a tree where you can see the rings and
- 3:16count how many years the tree is old.
- 3:20Well, if they split it with a thumbprint of a human, and it
- 3:24was so strange how close it looked, it actually brought
- 3:29tears to my eyes because it really shows you that we are
- 3:33part of nature and nature is part of us.
- 3:35And you don't think about these things because you're human and
- 3:38you're stuck in your everyday world and you're doing dishes
- 3:41and going to work and taking care of kids and people and
- 3:44projects and everything else, and you don't think about these
- 3:46things. But we are part of nature.
- 3:49So when I noticed that Dottie was having all of this and I
- 3:52felt such compassion for her. And of course, what do we what
- 3:56do you do for them? Well, there's not a lot
- 3:58theoretically if you read about it, that you can do but
- 4:01supplements? And for me it's always about
- 4:04diet, diet, diet. So I started pumping her with
- 4:06coconut oil. I went and bought her fresh live
- 4:09crickets and within the matter of 10 days she looks like a new
- 4:13woman. All of her feathers are
- 4:15completely back, not grown out all the way, but she at least is
- 4:18covered in feathers again. And this morning she's already
- 4:21out the gate and she is in the lawn and she's looking for
- 4:24whatever they do every morning. Worms, bugs, I don't know, they
- 4:27go spend all day digging. So she's already gone.
- 4:30And the good news is she's out and about again, because she
- 4:33wasn't doing that, but it took some self-care and it took that
- 4:37contraction and recognizing, hey, this is the spot she's in,
- 4:40help her out. And we have to do that for
- 4:42ourselves. So when you get to those spots,
- 4:45instead of being mad, instead of being frustrated with yourself,
- 4:48just give yourself the break. Let yourself feel that way.
- 4:52You don't have to stay that way for a long time.
- 4:55But take care of yourself. Do the things so that you can
- 4:59have that moment where your new feathers come in and you feel
- 5:02like, damn, now I can go fly. Now I feel good and you can see
- 5:06it in her face that that's where she is now.
- 5:08Now she feels good. Her flight feathers are coming
- 5:11back in. She feels like, OK, I've got
- 5:13some protection again. I can go out there.
- 5:15Take care of yourself that way. Learn the lesson from Dottie.
- 5:19When you have to get rid of everything in order to feel
- 5:21better, you do it. But then you realize, OK, now
- 5:24I've got to contract. I've got to take care of myself
- 5:26a little bit and then I can go right back out there.
- 5:29All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:32will see you tomorrow. Bye.
