Transcript
- 0:01my guest today is Peter nayor and we're
- 0:03going to be diving deep into the world
- 0:05of video and CTV advertising challenges
- 0:09and
- 0:10opportunities I first met Peter almost
- 0:1320 years ago when I was first starting
- 0:15out in digital media and I was a small
- 0:19company called wrapped Peter was the
- 0:21head of sales at a company called I
- 0:24Village that focused on content for
- 0:25women and he was my client and since
- 0:29then Peter has gone on to build a career
- 0:32as one of the true leaders in the
- 0:34digital advertising space he has led
- 0:37sales organizations at Netflix snap Hulu
- 0:42and
- 0:43nbcu he is a former chair of the
- 0:46interactive advertising Bureau Peter I
- 0:49am so glad that you're able to join me
- 0:51today to talk digital advertising um so
- 0:54happy to be here with the yield doctor
- 0:56himself uh those introductions always
- 0:59make me a little uncomfortable so I'm
- 1:01just glad to catch up with you after so
- 1:03long and we can talk about the video
- 1:06market and see where it goes excellent
- 1:09and you and I caught up in person last
- 1:12week for the first time in many years
- 1:14and it's uh it's always good to
- 1:16reconnect with P I think I've talked
- 1:18about in previous episodes that I love
- 1:20catching up with people I haven't caught
- 1:22up with in a long time and you're a top
- 1:23of that list so thank you well it was
- 1:25fun walking around that conference with
- 1:27you because I was introducing James as
- 1:29the the yield doctor and it was real
- 1:31conversation starter so you know it's
- 1:34good fun good fun it is good fun soy
- 1:38let's talk about some of the definitions
- 1:40around video because this is a confusing
- 1:42space for a lot of people and a lot of
- 1:44the lingo can have lots of different
- 1:46meanings there are some formats of ads
- 1:50that run on TV or in TV like experiences
- 1:53or you might refer to as connected TV
- 1:55like Hulu or Netflix there are some ads
- 1:59and some that run on devices like PCS
- 2:02where you might run against an ad on
- 2:04something like YouTube maybe it's full
- 2:07screen maybe it's on your phone or
- 2:09tablet maybe it's in a smaller window
- 2:11and then there are there are video ads
- 2:13that are running in traditional display
- 2:15uh type environments that some would say
- 2:17aren't even video ads that maybe it's
- 2:19just a form of rich media and and now
- 2:23increasingly we see video ads running on
- 2:25outdoor Billboards and TV screens and
- 2:28hotels and and on air planes that would
- 2:30be classified as digital out of home so
- 2:34when you think about all these different
- 2:36digital advertising experiences what
- 2:40language do you use to to define those
- 2:42different experiences well I speak
- 2:44through the a lens of a
- 2:47sales side of the of the street right so
- 2:51keep that in mind I'm not speaking to
- 2:53the buyer lens or talking or looking
- 2:56through a buyer lens I mean as a
- 2:58seller uh particularly my experience at
- 3:01Hulu and then again at Netflix you know
- 3:03we were going after TV budgets because
- 3:07streaming TV or Ott or streaming really
- 3:11does look a lot like broadcast and cable
- 3:15linear um you're talking full screen ads
- 3:19nestled within long form content that's
- 3:23typically professionally published um
- 3:27what's attractive about both
- 3:29conventional and streaming TV is that
- 3:32you know it's continuous play it's sound
- 3:35on it's full screen and Those ads are
- 3:39typically viewed to completion uh so
- 3:44it's really the most valuable form of
- 3:46video in my opinion um now all TV is
- 3:50video but not all videoos TV I mean when
- 3:53you consider all the vertical
- 3:55opportunities whether it's Tik Tock um
- 3:59uh real s uh YouTube shorts snap
- 4:04Spotlight and then you consider YouTube
- 4:07I mean that is all video sites s and
- 4:10motion ads sit s and motion
- 4:12storytelling but um then all of a sudden
- 4:15a lot of variables come into play is it
- 4:17full screen is it audio on is it
- 4:20skippable um what's the length of the ad
- 4:23so I think the buy side has uh their
- 4:26work cut out them when they're trying to
- 4:28compare app app to Apples because you
- 4:31just can't say oh a video CPM is a video
- 4:34CPM is a video CPM it's like it really
- 4:36depends on the environment I mean you
- 4:38also talked about video ads in a browser
- 4:41environment I mean personally when I go
- 4:45and land on a website and there's just a
- 4:47video ad that's completely contextually
- 4:50IR IR running irrespective of the
- 4:53content it's just kind of anchored to
- 4:55the the bottom corner of your browser it
- 4:58may or may not have audio you exit out I
- 5:01mean I understand why a publisher might
- 5:04be uh deploying Those ads I think the
- 5:07buyer has to be careful to make sure
- 5:10they're giving that the proper weight
- 5:12and value because that out of stream I
- 5:15would call that out of stream it's not
- 5:17instream it's not pre-roll in order for
- 5:19something to be pre-roll there's got to
- 5:20be a roll you know what I mean um so I
- 5:24think that's questionable valuable and
- 5:26and then um your last one out of home
- 5:29digital out of home whether you know
- 5:31you're seeing it in you're seeing things
- 5:34in like an elevator or a Subway or um
- 5:40gas stations or or shopping environments
- 5:43whatever you know I admire that the out
- 5:45of home world has figured out how to
- 5:49enable these ads and in many cases make
- 5:52them uh connected uh so I I I think out
- 5:56of home is a very powerful medium but
- 5:59again it's it's up to the buyer to make
- 6:00sure they're putting the proper waiting
- 6:02on those ads since you know
- 6:05conceivably anybody with a pulse any
- 6:08carbon based life form can encounter it
- 6:11so targeting becomes more Geographic and
- 6:14things like that so there's there's a a
- 6:17big world of video options out there and
- 6:21and again I you know I've always said
- 6:24I've always encountered buyer sorry if
- 6:26I'm running on do you want to like no no
- 6:29I push you on one thing because I didn't
- 6:31I expected you to start with INR is more
- 6:33valuable than out of roll how should you
- 6:36I mean and and again when you have your
- 6:38sales hat on that's not a surprising
- 6:40position to take given some of the
- 6:41companies you you've represented but how
- 6:43can someone think about the relative
- 6:45value is it a little bit is it a lot is
- 6:48it a completely different experience if
- 6:50I'm a buyer trying to think about the
- 6:52value of enroll versus Out roll how how
- 6:54do you even think about that I just
- 6:56think enroll is more uh valuable because
- 6:59of attention you know when you're
- 7:03engrossed in content and there's a
- 7:06commercial Interruption where it's
- 7:09supposed to be where it's you know the
- 7:11Storyteller has made a commercial break
- 7:13it's not totally interruptive when you
- 7:16theoretically are watching Lum for
- 7:18content and you're giving that your
- 7:20attention that ad is more likely to get
- 7:23more of your attention and if it's done
- 7:26with uh the right data the right
- 7:28targeting right context then it's more
- 7:31favorable attention again I think out of
- 7:34rle has uh increased likelihood to be um
- 7:39a little bit more annoying now it might
- 7:40get attention but remember there's
- 7:43positive attention and negative
- 7:44attention there's positive sentiment
- 7:46negative sentiment and um and I I um
- 7:50ever since I was very very early at Hulu
- 7:53back in the 201s I just said streaming
- 7:57and T back then it was called Ott um
- 8:01said Ott and TV are more or less the
- 8:03same because um of all the the mechanics
- 8:07full screen audio on Etc then I would
- 8:10argue streaming is
- 8:12actually um the King of the Hill because
- 8:16it's on demand as opposed to passively
- 8:18being pushed out it's addressable it's
- 8:20one to one as opposed to one to many
- 8:22theoretically and increasingly it's a
- 8:25younger audience that's growing as
- 8:27opposed to Conventional TV which is
- 8:29still big awesome audience but it's
- 8:32aging and Contracting so I I do stack
- 8:36rank it at the top so as you know I'm
- 8:40very interested in what
- 8:42advertises um value as a proxy for what
- 8:45the price should be on some of these ads
- 8:48and I've previously created videos to
- 8:50talk about all the different attributes
- 8:52that a buyer might consider in digital
- 8:54and and you know whether they're linked
- 8:56to price and it's an overwhelmingly long
- 8:58list of includes the size of the ad the
- 9:01environment that's showing and the
- 9:03audience it's showing to the targeting
- 9:05Dimensions the frequency C I could go on
- 9:07and on um I I guess I'd like to hear
- 9:10from you what are the top two or three
- 9:12things that you think that buyers are
- 9:14looking for in a digital video campaign
- 9:17and and I'm going to take one that
- 9:19you've already talked about which is the
- 9:20attention particularly whether it's it's
- 9:22in the Stream or out of the stream but
- 9:24what are the other top couple of things
- 9:26that you think buyers really care about
- 9:28yeah I mean there's media math right and
- 9:30you talked about a lot of the meting
- 9:32math so I think um each buyer or each
- 9:35agency might have their own math with
- 9:37some commonalities Again full screen
- 9:40duration clutter is a big one like am I
- 9:43in a ad pod with for other Advertiser or
- 9:47am I one of one that has a lot to do
- 9:49with attention and value um increasingly
- 9:53I think the word of the last couple
- 9:56years is outcomes you know buyers want
- 10:00outcomes they want
- 10:02measurability um I think short-termism
- 10:05continues to be ever presentent and
- 10:08anytime you can show how the video ad
- 10:12can lead to some form of measurement
- 10:16buyers are going to value that you look
- 10:17at a company like Edo for example Kevin
- 10:20crem is the CEO of this video company
- 10:24called Edo where they're measuring site
- 10:27visitation and search activity
- 10:30like if you're a video seller you would
- 10:32consider a company like that and there's
- 10:34many others um so I would say outcomes
- 10:36is a big deal um
- 10:39increasingly um brand safety and brand
- 10:42suitability you know for a couple years
- 10:45has been a big deal brand safety is one
- 10:47thing you know you may or may not want
- 10:49to be next to war um there's a lot of
- 10:52people who shy away from news and news
- 10:54organizations are saying whoa whoa whoa
- 10:57all news isn't War like news is
- 10:59lifestyle entertainment weather um
- 11:02health and
- 11:03lifestyle um so there's all sorts of
- 11:06arguments about what is brand safe and
- 11:09then again there's brand suitability so
- 11:11there's safety and suitability so you
- 11:14might say that oh these uh shows that
- 11:18have to do with you know big dramas they
- 11:22might be brand safe but you know for a
- 11:25brand like Pampers is a big drama
- 11:27suitable and I just making these
- 11:29examples up so brand safety brand
- 11:31suitability is next on my list there and
- 11:35then um I guess with the increasingly
- 11:39complex landscape of privacy I'm feeling
- 11:43there's um the pendulum swinging back to
- 11:46a little bit more acceptance of context
- 11:50as a way to uh really
- 11:53value video and context contributes to
- 11:58Brand safety and brand suitability and
- 12:00going right back to where I started on
- 12:02this outcomes because if you have the
- 12:04right ey in the right place at the right
- 12:06time I.E context then you know the
- 12:08outcomes probably uh Trend up as well so
- 12:12those are some of the things that I
- 12:14think about for that buyers
- 12:17consider let's talk about the outcomes
- 12:19then because um 20 let's rewind 20 years
- 12:23where there was much more focus on
- 12:25broadcast TV and the ability to measure
- 12:28those outcomes was was essentially zero
- 12:31you had audience measurement through you
- 12:34know neelson and other panels you had
- 12:37potentially companies like comcore who
- 12:39are also more focused on audience we
- 12:42should be in an environment now where
- 12:44it's easier to measure the the outcomes
- 12:47do you feel like the industry has
- 12:49matured enough that it's really there or
- 12:51is this still coming uh I think it's
- 12:56gonna get increasingly better um and
- 13:01here we are how how deep are we into the
- 13:03uh conversation here's the first mention
- 13:05of AI okay like AI will make things
- 13:08better but you know 20 years ago they
- 13:11did have outcomes and the outcomes were
- 13:14if I buy x00 gross rating points I sell
- 13:18more product and they may not know
- 13:21directly how that magic happened other
- 13:25than gross rating points on television
- 13:27moved that much more percentage off the
- 13:30shelves or that many more seats sold or
- 13:32that many more cars off the lot or
- 13:34whatever and that's why TV's always been
- 13:37um coveted because you make the
- 13:39investment you know it's going to work
- 13:41the funniest thing that ever happened to
- 13:42me was I was um on a sales call with the
- 13:46good folks of Tyson chicken I don't know
- 13:48if they're going to be happy if I'm
- 13:49telling the story or not but when I was
- 13:51calling on Tyson chicken they said are
- 13:54you confident that this campaign's going
- 13:56to run in full on time as we're disc
- 13:59discussing and I said yeah sure it's
- 14:01like because it's really important
- 14:02because we put our order in for the
- 14:04slaughter of the chickens based on the
- 14:07media bu it's like wow you know I never
- 14:11knew that media was life and death but
- 14:13it was life and death to the chickens so
- 14:15like we can't kill all the chickens if
- 14:17you're not going to create demand they
- 14:19knew getting back to your question they
- 14:21knew that when they advertised they're
- 14:24going to sell more chicken and so they
- 14:27made the appropriate decisions about how
- 14:31many chickens to kill so it works
- 14:34advertising works and it gets
- 14:36increasingly more measurable As Time
- 14:39Marches on that is a brutal story but it
- 14:43is a nice bridge to my my next
- 14:46question you've worked with the
- 14:48traditional TV buyers who have moved
- 14:51over to digital when when some of those
- 14:54traditional buyers who have been buying
- 14:56TV for decades in some cases start to
- 14:59buy digital what what are the thing one
- 15:02thing or many things that they either
- 15:04get wrong or get most frustrated about
- 15:07when they move over to digital yeah I
- 15:10don't know if there's anything they're
- 15:11getting particularly wrong I think they
- 15:13get frustrated that you know we're just
- 15:16living in an increasingly complex world
- 15:18and that's a fact of life and I don't
- 15:21see it getting easier anytime soon I
- 15:24think they get frustrated because it
- 15:25used to be buy ABC NBC Fox C BS handful
- 15:30of cable networks and again you'd know
- 15:32that when you make that that buy you'd
- 15:36sell product so the complexity of data
- 15:41targeting measurability tags is
- 15:44frustrating um the other thing that you
- 15:47know TV was is still coveted because of
- 15:50its big reach you know 70 of the top 10
- 15:54broadcasts last year were the NFL for
- 15:56example which is why that's still
- 15:58coveted but um that kind of
- 16:02reach is not um the exclusive home of TV
- 16:07you look at YouTube YouTube is massive
- 16:09you look at Tik Tok Tik Tok has been
- 16:12advertisers been dumping money into Tik
- 16:15Tok so they have reach there but it's so
- 16:19different than the reach of conventional
- 16:21one to many TV and so they get
- 16:23frustrated because it's it becomes clear
- 16:26that wow in a an environment like Tik
- 16:28Tok I have to have lots and lots and
- 16:30lots and lots of creatives you know TV
- 16:33they kind of run the same thing over and
- 16:34over to reach their reach and frequency
- 16:36goals in in some of these other
- 16:38environments in
- 16:40digitals video we'll just say all
- 16:42digital video you know one of the
- 16:44biggest
- 16:45frustrations is um the lack of reach and
- 16:48frequency control and that's either
- 16:51because W Gardens don't want to
- 16:52cooperate or even the open web
- 16:54Publishers don't want to give everything
- 16:55away but that lack of uh frequency
- 16:59control I think is a big source of
- 17:02frustration uh not only to buyers uh but
- 17:05also to viewers of course um and then
- 17:08the other thing probably and then I'll
- 17:10stop is in TV there's so many major
- 17:15advertisers who are um really interested
- 17:20in knowing exactly where the ad run ran
- 17:22it's like yeah I want to be in the NFL
- 17:24and I know I'm going to be after the
- 17:25second touchdown or I'll be in the third
- 17:27quarter like I'm gonna run in this show
- 17:30on on broadcast or whatever and that's
- 17:34important especially when you realize
- 17:36like if you're a quick service
- 17:37restaurant and your funds your
- 17:40advertising funds are controlled by the
- 17:43Affiliates or the um you know the own
- 17:46the franchise owners those franchise
- 17:48owners may or may not be as
- 17:50sophisticated as as everybody in our
- 17:53business and they don't understand what
- 17:56do you mean I don't know when or where
- 17:57it ran like I I like to know I like to
- 18:00watch the ball game and see it and it's
- 18:02and so those those frustrations are ever
- 18:05present I think okay all right this is
- 18:08the the yield doctor podcast we have to
- 18:10talk about value and uh in some sense
- 18:14value aligns with pricing so so let's
- 18:16get specific on on some advice that you
- 18:18might have there there are lots of
- 18:20potential tactics that creators or asset
- 18:24owners can use to make more money off
- 18:26their video assets they can vary the
- 18:28length of the ads they can invest in
- 18:30Innovative formats they can move
- 18:33programmatic or the reverse they can
- 18:34move fully handhold and and while I
- 18:37acknowledge that there is no one- siiz
- 18:40fits all if you were working with a
- 18:43Content owner for the first time who had
- 18:45a lot of video what are the first sort
- 18:48of two or three things that you would
- 18:49work with them to think about to ensure
- 18:52that they were maximizing the value of
- 18:54their assets uh it's a great question
- 18:57and um I'll go with your prompt that
- 19:00says they have a sizable amount of
- 19:03inventory if you're lucky enough to have
- 19:05a sizable amount of inventory I think
- 19:07you have to you know be prepared to be
- 19:11both in the program programmatic as well
- 19:14as direct sales business um programmatic
- 19:19you can have pmps you can have um you
- 19:23know programmatic guaranteed deals with
- 19:25people uh you can have back uh um you
- 19:29can have open exchange for just remant
- 19:32inventory for backfill so programmatic
- 19:35is an important part of the mix to
- 19:37complement your direct sales mix I I
- 19:40think people I mean we've been talking
- 19:42about this a long time nobody knows this
- 19:44more in the yield doctor but
- 19:45programmatic is not automatic and I
- 19:49think a lot of people think programmatic
- 19:50is automatic I just plug it in and and
- 19:52I'll just fill up my big sacks of money
- 19:55that's not true so to have a direct
- 19:57sales team I think is important again
- 20:00considering if you have a a
- 20:02sizable uh amount of inventory to go out
- 20:05and create that demand to make sure
- 20:07people understand who you are what the
- 20:09audience looks like what the environment
- 20:10is the context everything we've been
- 20:12talking about so I think a a mix of
- 20:15programmatic and direct sales is
- 20:17important the other thing I would remind
- 20:20them is uh this is an evergreen rule
- 20:23buyers buy for their reasons not ours
- 20:26right buyers buy for their reasons so
- 20:28that that direct Salesforce really needs
- 20:31to go out there and listen to what each
- 20:34holding company each marketer values
- 20:37which is something we talked about
- 20:39earlier what are they valuing how are
- 20:42they measuring and then how can you with
- 20:45your kind of inventory whether it's B
- 20:47Toc B2B you know user generated
- 20:50professionally published whatever how do
- 20:52you fit in and then you segment your
- 20:55your sales um efforts uh accordingly and
- 21:00then of course you need to be prepared
- 21:02to provide people those those
- 21:05measurements those outcomes those kind
- 21:07of proof of performances that the the
- 21:11buyer or their
- 21:12agencies care about and so you got to be
- 21:15prepared to get in to the business of
- 21:17having relationships with a lot of
- 21:19adtech and measurement providers um and
- 21:23part of that of course is um being
- 21:26prepared to enhance your Beautiful video
- 21:29ads with data with targeting with
- 21:33context uh you know just enrich
- 21:36everything you're doing so there's a lot
- 21:39to it um programmatic direct
- 21:43sales data measurement and then you know
- 21:46from a seller the thing I can't advocate
- 21:49for enough is to listen listen to your
- 21:51customers because my experience is
- 21:53they'll tell you what they need in order
- 21:55to buy you and then it's up to you can
- 21:58you give them what they need or you know
- 22:01or or you going to segment and go
- 22:03somewhere else yeah uh the first part of
- 22:06what you said programmatic has not mean
- 22:08automatic resonates so much I spent a
- 22:10lot of my career educating my peers that
- 22:13as we move programmatic we actually
- 22:15needed more people focused on yield on
- 22:18the auctions on the private exchanges
- 22:20that were being set up on all the
- 22:21programmatic pipes that were breaking
- 22:23along the way because you think that oh
- 22:25you're getting away from a rate card
- 22:26based selling it should get easier it
- 22:29actually gets more complex as you're
- 22:31well aware yes Peter this has been so
- 22:34much fun I hope you and I will be seeing
- 22:36more of each other going forward here
- 22:37shortly is there any closing thoughts or
- 22:40anything you'd like to leave our
- 22:41audience with I guess uh the one thing
- 22:43it's kind of an evergreen thought is we
- 22:46talk about addressability and data and
- 22:48targeting and measurement don't forget
- 22:51the value of the
- 22:53creative right what goes into that
- 22:57rectangle that's a big big um a big big
- 23:02deal when it comes to Performance and
- 23:05everything so I think sometimes we lose
- 23:08a force for the trees so if you're a
- 23:10publisher and you have the ability to
- 23:11help your marketer with the the creative
- 23:15then go for it or if you have your
- 23:17ability to make it shoppable or or
- 23:20whatever don't forget that creative is a
- 23:22big variable of success thank you so
- 23:24much Peta have a good rest of your day
- 23:27my pleasure
- 23:28oh
