- 2:39that we replay the one hour Thinman episode, the first one, which would
- 2:46refer back to the Lux Radio Theater presentation of The Thinman. The Thinman was
- 2:52written by Dashel Hammett in nineteen thirty three and came to movies theaters in nineteen
- 2:58fifty thirty four and was just a phenomenal success. The film won four Academy
- 3:05Award nominations, including Best Actor William Powell and best director ws Vandyne and would
- 3:12eventually spawn five sequels. This story was produced for the Lux Radio Theater as
- 3:17its second episode from Hollywood. Lux Radio Theater actually began in New York City.
- 3:24However, of those first eighty two episodes, only one survives to this
- 3:30day. So this was the start of a brand new era for LOX.
- 3:34And we'll talk more about the movie afterwards, but here now. From June
- 3:38the eighth of nineteen thirty six is The Thin Man, Hollywood, California.
- 3:45Monday, June eighth, The Nuts Radio Theater, presented from its you home

- 4:26this presentation. Since you by the makers of Luck Toilet Soap, the Beauty
- 4:30Soap of the Stars appearing before he distinquished Hollywood audience, Mister Powell, Ms.
- 4:38Rooy and the cast of eighteen great players presents the play that has broken
- 4:42Fox OFFFIC records from coast to coast, The Thin Mass and as producer tonight
- 4:54we present the director who did The Thin Man on the screen, together with
- 4:58such triumph as Naughty Marietta Vater Horn Rose Marie I Lived My life and compliss
- 5:02others smash hit pictures. Mister w Wes van Dyke, Mister van Dyke,
- 5:14Hello everybody. Well, it's a great scene at the lux Radio Theater tonight.
- 5:17In our audience we have Betty Davis, Jimmy Mudieald Gleeson, Bob Armstrong,
- 5:23Oley Olsen of Poulson and Johnson Stu Erwin, Jimmy Starr, famous communist
- 5:29devil indentible and Missus Leon Slashing Schlessing and jer Maybe it would interest you on
- 5:35a little inside information on the show we're doing tonight, The Thin Man,
- 5:39and about William Powell and Myrna Lloyd who are going to do it for you.
- 5:43As you know, The Thin Man was the best selling novel by Nashal
- 5:45Hammer Hunt Stromberg. Out at the studio. MGM got a hold of it
- 5:48and brought it to me. Who do he said, if he'll make this
- 5:50picture out by the story. Well, I read it, and well it
- 5:54was a good enough mystery story. There was something else about the book that
- 5:57struck me here was something new and fresh, charming, a romance between a
- 6:01man and his wife. It's a story of a couple of kids that understood
- 6:03each other and had a blessed confidence in each other. Beneath all the casualness
- 6:08and all the wise cracking, there is a lovely, wholesome relationship, something
- 6:12really deep and sweet and inspiring. Well, we decided to make the picture
- 6:15Albert Hackett, the Princess Goodrich Walt to swell script. William Powell and Marna
- 6:18Ley played the parts, and how they played them beautifully because Powell was just
- 6:23Paul and Lay was just Lay, both of them wise cracking all the time
- 6:27and plowning right through the picture. I suppose you know the plenty of motion
- 6:30pictures take from two months to a year to shoot. We did The Thin
- 6:32Man in sixteen days, retakes and all. Of course it wasn't a pretentious
- 6:36picture. We didn't make it as one. I hate ethics, but it
- 6:41is evident that people liked it. It has been very interesting to study out
- 6:44how they can tell this story on the radio. Hill and Murna have had
- 6:46a lot of fun getting it ready for you, just as they did making
- 6:49the picture, and from the original story from the original motion picture cast.
- 6:54We had and are porcement having Minegambo Porta Hall, William Henry and Thomas Jackson
- 6:59hit So here we go with William Powell and Nick Charles and Myrna Lly as
- 7:04Norah in The Thin Man. Here they come Bill Powell and Marta Lloyd.
- 7:19We're in a fashionable cafe Momart, New York City. It's Christmas Eve and
- 7:25the well appointed dining room is filling rapide. From the bar comes a good
- 7:28looking young fellow of about thirty five, tall, casual and worldly wives.
- 7:32He's Nick Charles, the well known private detective played by William Powell, and
- 7:36he's waiting for his charming wife, Norah played by Marta Lloyd. As he
- 7:41takes his place at the table, a young girl on the other side of
- 7:43the room recognizes him and hurries over, I mean you and you mister Nick
- 7:54Charles. The detective cryan, yeah, I'm Nick Charles. I thought I
- 7:58recognize you. My name is Josh. Yes, how you do you mind

- 17:37Radio Theater in Hollywood Boulevard. Before we go on with the story of Nick
- 17:40and Nora, we want to take you on a quick tour of Hollywood Lobby,
- 17:49of the Hotel Roosevelt, where stars and newcomers gather. A young actress
- 17:53just breaking into pictures is telling her friend the first success. Well, there's
- 18:00one thing. I've got one of the best managers in Hollywood, and that
- 18:03means a lock. Oh, but the rules is laid down for me.
- 18:07Geez, what do you mean rule? Well, you'd think I was going
- 18:10into training for the Olympics. I've got them five pounds. I've got to
- 18:12take lessons in singing and dictions, and of course my complexion has got to
- 18:17be perfect. I've got to be more careful than ever, enough to get
- 18:18little blemishes or in large pores and what they call cosmetic skin. Thank goodness,
- 18:25I know enough to use Luck's toilet so regularly the way everybody around here
- 18:27does. Nine out of ten beautiful Hollywood screen stars use Luck toilet soap and
- 18:37howl for years. Here's what the famous Claude at Colbert had to say.
- 18:41When I tell people how simple my complexion care is, they always seem surprised.
- 18:45I use cosmetics, of course, but I always use luck toilet soap
- 18:49to guard against cosmetic skin. It's easy to keep skin lovely my way.
- 18:56Now on with the shoulder, thin man. Why an hour has gone by
- 19:04since Nick heard about the murder of Julia Wolf. In the living room of
- 19:07their sweetest hotel, Nick and Nora listening to the radio, a news reporter
- 19:11is broadcasting the latest developments of the case. And here's the latest news of
- 19:15the Julia Wolf matter. The police have found out that the beautiful bond secretary
- 19:18with the gangster, this girl there spreading the drag net for one Joe Morelli,
- 19:19is at to be hiding out somewhere in the city in Paris today.
- 19:22The chamber of Deputy never mind the chamber of Deputy Joe Morelli, that's what
- 19:26I want to know about. Well, did you get any more information out
- 19:30of the headquarters as much as they had? Judy Wolf was shot to kill
- 19:33about nine or nine to thirty body discovered on the four of a living room
- 19:37and it leave for eleven who discovered it. That'll surprise you. Memi Whineman,
- 19:41Jos's mother. Right? What was she doing here? I don't know
- 19:45where's cride Wine listening? But McCauley was going to see him. They had
- 19:49an a point. I spoke to McCauley. Why I never showed up?
- 19:52Nobody knows who he is. He's going to be pretty tough on Darth here,
- 19:56isn't it? What mean that? It looked as if Clyde one and
- 20:00shipped one appointment in order to keep another with Julia Wolf? You think he
- 20:04killed him? She was a detective around here, darlings, that's goad.
- 20:11You wanted to see me? Yeah? I mean thank you? Is anyone
- 20:18here but Norah? Have a see hello, Darcy. I'm I'm sorry for
- 20:23breaking in on you like this old That's all right, We're used to it.
- 20:26Anything wrong. Julia Wolf is dead. We know that. Here's the
- 20:30gun she was shot with. What are you trying to tell me that you
- 20:34didn't? Yes? I hated her. She she kept me from seeing my
- 20:37father. I went down there to ask her what it was she wouldn't tell
- 20:41me. I shut her. Where did you hit her? Pretty good shot?
- 20:47You are? What did she do? She's so down? Did she
- 20:49make any sound? Didn't screen? I don't know which way did she fall?
- 20:56Oh? Yeah, people fall toward a shot, you know, not
- 20:59back from it. I knew you were lying. Where did you get this
- 21:06gig? I bought it in I thought, So why did you say you
- 21:11did it? You try to shoot? Oh? Please know that. You
- 21:15got to tell me, Nick, let me Dorothy, look at me.
- 21:19Nick is trying to help you. Why don't you help him? You were
- 21:22trying to shield your mother, weren't you. No, your father did Dorothy,
- 21:30Yes, my father. Why do you think he did it? It
- 21:33was the first one find Julia wolf She saw something in Julian and she took
- 21:38it. What was it? A watch change? It belonged to my father.
- 21:42So you think your father did it? I don't know. I don't
- 21:45know. Did your mother turn the chain over to the police. No,
- 21:48she she kept. She didn't tell him anything about it, but she showed
- 21:52it to you. Yes. Why did your mother go to Julia Wolfe's apartment
- 21:55in the first place? She went to us for money? Oh? Money
- 21:59again? H yeah? Oh, have him come up? Who is it,
- 22:07Dorothy? I wonder if you'd mind waiting in the bedroom, of course,
- 22:11be only a minute. Well Nick, Mimi, whyman alone? She's
- 22:18never alone? Part of these brothers with a screwy college kid and some guy
- 22:22for the name of Chris Jorgenson. Who is he? Calley told me about
- 22:27here. I'm an hanger on time. I think he's off for me.
- 22:30He's dough, but she maybe that's why she wanted to get some from Junior.
- 22:36I'll figure. Oh, Nick, how old are you? Thank you?
- 22:42Nick? Is my son? Gilbert? Are you very well? Thank
- 22:45you? I mean to christ Jorgenson? He's no friend of mine, my
- 22:52wife Linus, Gilbert Linus and mister Jorgans. How do you do well?
- 22:59Mimi? I've never been in such a state in my life. You know,
- 23:02of course, that I was the one who found Juliu bull so we've
- 23:04heard. Oh my dear, it was terrible. I walked him there,
- 23:07she was lying dead on the floor. Meant to ask you mother, much
- 23:11blood? Gilbert jump me so morbid, But I'm interested and murdered, you
- 23:15know, mister Charles, I formed a theory about this when already so in
- 23:19my opinion the man who did it? But be quiet. You don't know
- 23:22anything about it, But do be quiet, you were saying, Missus Varnan
- 23:27about finding Juliu Wulf. I was s tetrified and such a misblif slide minus
- 23:33Craton. Absolutely crazy to stay away a time like this though. What do
- 23:37the police think he had something to do with it? What do you think?
- 23:40Oh? I know he didn't, but I wish I could find him.
- 23:42I have something very important to tell Himcaull. It won't help at all.
- 23:48He thinks I just want the money. Well, don't you, Nick?
- 23:51You're always easy. Missus Varlan. Were you alone when you found Julie
- 23:56wolf Why a goose? I was mister Jorbinson with you? I certainly enough.
- 24:03I don't know anything about it. That's what I had that Julia Wolfe
- 24:06was dead with the Missus Wyman called mit my club? Oh she called you?
- 24:10Yes? Why I beg your pardon? Oh, let's not even talk
- 24:14about it. The thing to do is to time Clyde, and that's why
- 24:17I've come to you for Nick. You will help me find him, won't
- 24:19you? Please? Now, Mimi, there are a thousand detectives in New
- 24:25York Hire one of them. But Clyde knows you. All you have to
- 24:29do is to get in touch with him and tell him that Mimi says everything
- 24:32is all right, but that I got to see him. I'll tell you
- 24:34again, I don't want any part of it. Is that final final.
- 24:37Well, if that's the way you feel, you turn up. You just
- 24:41help all you can give a police every possible assistance. What you mean by

- 26:48Good, I want to talk to you. That's Jellia. Don't you think
- 26:52you'd like to go back to detection once in a while, just for the
- 26:55fun of it. Can't you get to sleep? No, everybody says you
- 26:59were a great detective. I'd like to see you work tomorrow. I'll buy

- 27:15if Wineant killed Julia and Dorothy knows it and the police will catch him without
- 27:19my help. Oh, please put out the life. I'm tired. Oh
- 27:25all right? Gone mad at you? Hey? Mm hm, did you

- 28:19Thank you? All right? Shoot, I mean what on your mind?
- 28:26You don't need to tell me you're tough. How I heard about you?
- 28:30I'm Joe Morelli. I haven't heard about you. I didn't bump up
- 28:34Georgia, all right, you didn't. I haven't seen her three much.
- 28:38We were all washed up. I wouldn't have any reason to hurt her.
- 28:42She was always on the up and up with me. But that dirty little
- 28:45rat Nunnheim, well he got sore because she liked me and hated him,
- 28:51so he put the finger on me. That's all. Very swell brother,
- 28:52only you're cutting your fish in the wrong market. I've had nothing to do
- 28:56with it. Now listen, the boys used to say that you are okay,
- 29:00that square guy. Now that's why I'm here. What's the law doing
- 29:06to me? Did they think I did it? Or was it just something

- 29:52saying a good place. Inspect that. Who's that woman on the floor?
- 29:53My wife? This guy shooting now, he tried to shoot me. I
- 29:56saw her on the jaw to get her out of the line of fire because
- 29:59they hit it too hard. Oh what got my Nora? All right?
- 30:02Darling? Oh, you darn fool. He didn't have to knock me out.
- 30:07I knew you'd take him, but I wanted to see you do it.
- 30:10She's all right, okay, slattering Take Marelli downstairs? I said,
- 30:17how do you people have to pop in? Inspector? We here, This
- 30:18is getting to be a sort of a meeting place for the Winning family,
- 30:22so we figured we'd stick around in case the old man himself shows up.
- 30:25Then we've seen Morelli sneaking, and we decided to come up. And I
- 30:27was pretty lucky for you too. Morelli a friend of yours. I never
- 30:32saw him before. What does he want of you? I want to tell
- 30:33me he didn't kill Julia Wolf? What's that to you? Nothing? What
- 30:37did he think it was to you? How's Kim? I don't know.
- 30:41I'm asking you, keep on asking. Oh so you're going to keep him
- 30:45on? All right, mister Charles. I won't bother you tonight, but
- 30:48i'll be in tomorrow morning and I'll have plenty of things to add. Good
- 30:52night, Thank you, Inspector Gils. Next time you come, try to
- 30:56stay longer. Nick, Wake up it's Christmas. Oh yeah, look,
- 31:10here's the telegram for you. Just came open it. Will you probably a
- 31:15touch from somebody? Well, Nick, it's from Clyde Wine. Listen,
- 31:22do you take charge of investigation on Julior Wolfe murder? Communicate with Herbert McCauley
- 31:27cride once where it's from Philadel. Then he didn't do it, did he?
- 31:32Nick? I don't know. Communicate with McCaulay. Huh, all right,
- 31:38we came up here this morning. What do you think he wants them
- 31:53to handle a kate? Well? What are the chances are you doing it?
- 31:57Slam? Oh? Please quiet dear. I wish you would, mister
- 32:02Charles. Would it help any if I could persuade him to meet you?
- 32:07I had word from Wine up myself last night, and he gave me a
- 32:10COVID message doing certain newspapers in case I wanted to get in touch with him.
- 32:14I wouldn't any harm for them. I'm sure you could clear thisself.
- 32:17Why it will only come back? It doesn't look well he's staying away a
- 32:22time like this? Yes, Oh oh, just a minute, So you
- 32:27missed McCauley Police department, Police department, Hello, well in Allentown. Yes,
- 32:38well, when's the next train, right, I'll get that. Well,
- 32:44why that's tried to commit suicide? They wanted to be down and identify
- 32:45him. Well, I guess this changes the whole story, doesn't it.
- 32:50That looks like an admission of guilt. I had such hopes. I thought,
- 32:54if you got on this case. Uh well, well it's no use
- 32:59thinking about it now. Well I'm sorry. I don't waste so much of
- 33:01your time. You will excuse me? Want you of course? Good bye
- 33:05bye? Well that's that, smiles you all. This is all gone now.
- 33:12I wanted you to find out who did it? Maybe I will go.
- 33:15I don't, please he did it? I don't. That's but I'm
- 33:21going to find out, old doctor. Why don't we going places? I
- 33:23want to speak with Peck the guild, Amanda Man, mister Charles, are
- 33:37you working on this case? Mando Man inspect the guild. I'm not,
- 33:38but he's interested. I don't mind telling you. I'd rather have you in
- 33:42on the right side, you mean, not on the Limon's side. I'd
- 33:45rather have your working with us than against it. So it's a fog.
- 33:49And then do you know about the case. I read the papers? What
- 33:52about the suicide. Oh, that's a phony. The men didn't even have
- 33:54to go down. I thought it might be From now on, are you
- 33:58going to think of every fin of man over six feet with white hair?
- 34:00Is winey? Do you think Wynett did it? Looks like he planned something
- 34:05and he shut up his apartment in his shop, But there's nothing yet to
- 34:07clinch it. Seth, Bill'll get your hundreds. If the wyman didn't do
- 34:10it, who's your candidate? I haven't got that far yet. I don't
- 34:15think that everything points to Winett. What about the Alibis, they're all okay,
- 34:19Missus, Wynant, the boy, Dorothy McCauley, even Marilly. What
- 34:22about the Jorgans. Oh, I'll check on that. And I'm afraid this
- 34:28is kind of double for you, missus Charles. I'm sitting on the edge
- 34:31of my chair. Frankly, I'm stunned. I don't know what to do
- 34:35next. What about you, Charles? See? Oh, but I've got
- 34:40a hunch. What is it? I got a call last night. I
- 34:45thought it with some of crank, but I have changed my mind. Whoever
- 34:47it was new something and I've got a feeling out here from him again.
- 35:00Hmm, what time is it? Almost ten, still waiting to hear from
- 35:04the crank and how hear me that quick? Hello? Yes he is Nick
- 35:10Charles, who can't hear you? I gotta can't hear you, that freak
- 35:17louder. I can't speak any louder. Ray, this is al Manheim again.
- 35:25You know I called you last night? Hey listen, are you still
- 35:30interested in that proposition? Yeah? Huh? All right, then, now
- 35:36here's the dope and get this straight. The man who killed Julia? What
- 36:07this girl? Do you think? Whya killed Julia wolf Amnnheim? Right?
- 36:10Why? Two reasons? First off, made me why not came across with
- 36:15the watch change he plucked off Julia's body? Well she did? It belonged
- 36:19to Clyde Wan. What's the second reason? The pit the bullet that killed
- 36:22Nonnheim came from the same gun. That's all right, fuckers, all right,
- 36:27it's perfect. Clyde Wynan is guilty of both though its murders. Maybe
- 36:31what you'll still get you one hundreds, I say, wine, it's innocent.
- 36:36You can say what you want, but I'm spreading a drag net for
- 36:38that guy over every town of the United States, and I'll get him too.
- 36:53Leaving he pick up playing why man last yearnings? Do you think they'll
- 37:04find him? Nick? Not be in New York? Probably is, Oh,
- 37:07it's getting me down hunts our dogs to day. But she's broken off
- 37:13her engagement. No asked me. She was a little hysterical, something about
- 37:16not wanting to ruin her fiance. Is life, daughter of a murderer and
- 37:21all that. Well, you made a dog. But do you think you're
- 37:25going I'm gonna take out some walk. He's just p walk. We're going
- 37:30to fight, Nick? What are you up to? I gotta hunt.
- 37:35I'm going down to look at wine and shops. I'm gonna find out why
- 37:37it's closed. Well I should he closed? He went away? You want
- 37:40to wait? A lots of times when I knew him, but they never
- 37:42closed his shop. I canna hunt something up. Me might be hiding there.
- 37:46I don't know, but these things you got my good. I got
- 37:49to find out Nick sick. I won't have you going down there at this
- 37:52hour of the night. He's a crazy man. He might kill you.
- 37:54He'll be all right. I got asked her to protect me. All right,
- 37:59go on, go on year bye care. But it's a dirty trick
- 38:01bringing me all away to New York just to make me a widow. You
- 38:04wouldn't be a widow along you, bet, I wouldn't not with all your
- 38:07money, you dog. Goodbye, doting Niki, take care of yourself phone
- 38:12sure, I will. Don't say it that way, say it this inmented.
- 38:15Why be the little woman cares? I don't care. I'm just used
- 38:21to you. That's come on our first. Why call me darling please,
- 38:27I'll be waiting to hear from you after after if you let anything happen to
- 38:30him, you will never wag that pail again. You are listening to the
- 38:49Luxe Radio Theaters production of The Thin Man starring William Powell and Manloi with the
- 38:52newsic under the direction of Louis Silver's. This is W. S. Vaandyk
- 38:54speaking. We have here tonight the man who wrote the great picture Lawyer Man
- 39:00or Bill Powell. Here. He's a producer too, but just on the
- 39:04writing end. He's done many great pictures Forty Second Street, The Gold Diggers,
- 39:07King of Burless, and lots of others, including an original musical,
- 39:10Ladies in London, which you'll be seeing soon. And here he is the
- 39:14man whose name you'll see on the screen before the picture starts one of Hollywood's
- 39:17greatest picture writers, James Seymour Naked. Thanks, Woody. I've been a
- 39:28movie writer for ten years. That's the first kind word anybody is said to
- 39:30me. Listen to Jim. The average person thinks the movie writers a fellow
- 39:36thatsists by himself as a sipewriter hammer, hammers out a lot of dialogue and
- 39:38hands it in. Would you like to direct correct that impression? I certainly
- 39:42would. Nobody works alone and by himself to make a picture. It's a
- 39:45matter of constant cooperation between producer, director, technician, actors and the writers.
- 39:52Some of the best story ideas come out of the conferences. Jim,
- 39:54how many writers would you say there are on an average picture Monday? Believe
- 39:58it or not. I've seen picture is where there were more writers than actors.
- 40:01If all the people who contributed to the story got screen credit, would
- 40:05look like a page from the telephone directory. You resembles the stage of the
- 40:08screen. Jim. Tell the posts how they're different. Well, pictures have
- 40:13less talk, but they tell more and less time. Like concentrated foods,
- 40:16all the good and none of the waste in the theata. Everything must be
- 40:21brought to the audience on the screen, you take your audience wherever the camera
- 40:24can go. And here's another important point that comes right back to your Lux
- 40:29radio theater. On the stage, the star just enters, but on the
- 40:34screen she's introduced with a big close up, a picture of the stars face
- 40:37many times larger than life stize. Every time a movie stars complexion is mentioned
- 40:42in this Lux radio theater, I think of those close ups. Those stars
- 40:46just have to be beautiful, and they found that Lux toilet soap helps them
- 40:51look their best. Producers know it too, and that's why it's the official
- 40:54soap in all the great studios in Hollywood. Right Woody, right on an
- 40:59osium. Thanks is coming over. Thanks for asking me good night, He
- 41:07paused for station identification. This is the Columbia Broadcasting System. The thin Man
- 41:20Nick is on his way to Clydewyne's deserted laboratory in a dark and desolate section
- 41:23of the city. His cap veers sharply around the corner and pulls up in
- 41:27front of a gloomy, old rickety building. Says sir, are you sure
- 41:35this is the place you want to like it? Come on after jump,
- 41:38I'll show are you tell us twenty. Oh do you want me to wait?
- 41:42No? Never mind? Oh that's good to say. No neighbor would
- 41:44have been at two o'clock in the morning. I want to get out of
- 41:45here. You are, thanks, so come on after up for you?
- 41:58Hello, Norah, what are you doing here? I beat you down.
- 42:02I want to go with you next. No, you're not going in that
- 42:07place alone. The next settle and I'll get out that skellet and hears yours
- 42:10and open that door. I'm here to say, all right, come on,
- 42:17nice neighborhood wine and picked up his laboratories. I can almost hear the
- 42:22change rattling. Do you believe in girls making? Hell? We are?
- 42:29Come in quiet? That's a lot. I've got a flashlight, like,
- 42:35after all, that's the shot going on? Which way straight ahead? Can
- 42:43get the lay out of the places? Also to me, you can't even
- 42:47with the shutters right now? Who's yes? This looks like why that's worth
- 42:54table like a slab and the moors there's a cement's fool around. Yeah,
- 43:01there's probably a lot of weekos on that table. Come on way to now,
- 43:05a little desk, go on, I want to look at it.
- 43:07What do you expect time doing? If I knew, and I'm fine,
- 43:10I wouldn't be. Yes, there's a loose boar that kid. It sounds
- 43:19like somebody who's walking over that way, just your imagination. There's no one
- 43:22in here with us? No, what about? Why this workshop? I
- 43:27could up? What's that? Fasta aster? Come here? He's scratching on
- 43:34the cement around the word table fast time, stop it, stop it?
- 43:39Do you know what I said? Fast? Take? Look at him?
- 43:42Good after something I've given? Scratched the ground like that one one w he's
- 43:45looking for fast pasta. No, that look I like a price you Samantha.
- 43:55Listen. It's hollow and when I could find something to dig it up?
- 44:02There's an iron bar on the table. I just saw it. Really
- 44:07not good? No, I guess not a hole in that cement. We'll
- 44:14find out what's under there. I'm scared. Ask how quiet you can keep
- 44:20them waiting? Nor after comes here once more? There she goes through the
- 44:25cement as to get away from there? Get away? Whoa? What is
- 44:35it? What's the asker? Were just gonna inspect a guild here? What's
- 44:38on the there? A body that have been there for weeks? Oh?
- 45:00I dressed the quit now you report it, you'll get your story of sor
- 45:01if I can give it to you. Until then, you've got to leave
- 45:05you alone. Come on now, get out. Those reporters are enough to
- 45:09drive a guy nuts. Well, you were right, Nick, it was
- 45:13about a skeleton rather buried in line. I wonder what Winan had against this
- 45:17one. Did you find any clothes? Yeah, but no identification on them,
- 45:22just a silver belt bottle with the initial d w R d w R.
- 45:25Who is that? I got a good idea that case. You worked
- 45:29on the guy who threatened to kill Winan. What was his name? Oh?
- 45:32Rosewater? Yeah, Rosewater. He said wine and tried to steal an
- 45:37invention, didn't they? Yes, But we figured it with the blackmail,
- 45:40just the same wine. It wouldn't mind having him out of the way,
- 45:43woulding? And according to the dart, the body's been there at least a
- 45:45couple of months. It's just about the time whine it closed the shop right
- 45:52If you put the skeleton under the Forestcubia half an hour ago we found the
- 45:55bullet he was killed with, and something in the leg bone, an old
- 46:00piece of shrapnels trappel Yeah, why shrap moel and the leg bone it's probably
- 46:06limp. What do you mean, Oh? Nothing? Well, so long.
- 46:12And second, I'm going to pick up my wife, take it home.
- 46:14It's been a long night, so give up my best. What is
- 46:16right? Where are we going back? The hotel of my tweets? Pack
- 46:27our bags like a nice trip somewhere a trip. Oh no, my soul
- 46:30woman, I give you three murders and you aren't satisfying. I want you
- 46:34to stay inside. Wine, I did find it. What do you mean
- 46:37he's done in the shop. There's a big body that is very there.
- 46:43Wine. Yeah, but they all said it was rose water. Oh that's
- 46:46what they think. What makes you so sure it's wine? And start?
- 46:50Several things close? For instance, they were carefully present, they were carefully
- 46:54preserved. The body was just carefully destroyed. First to kill him, cut
- 47:01of one thing, and all Skellot the look alike. Well, jn't say
- 47:05sure, but I remember that wine. I've had some sharp throon in his
- 47:07shin. They found it under the protostop. How long have you been dead?
- 47:12A couple of months anyway, And he couldn't have committed those other murders,
- 47:15Marca, Why don't see Dorothy? No nobody but you. I didn't
- 47:21even tell Gill. Why not? I want to lie load like at the
- 47:24whole dope. I don't want to go off off cuts. What are you
- 47:27going to do. I'm going to get the real murderer. I've got an
- 47:30idea. I want to see me taken. Yeah, you got a knife,
- 47:34even Ingram, Well, I've gotta lose. I'm going to get a
- 47:37pope a dinner. Put everything from Russian cave office, canabat cheese, an
- 47:40officer behind the palms. It's a du dragging what is there? And I'm
- 47:45going to invite all of the subpect the subsets. They won't come, No,
- 47:49they'll come. I'll have Gill issue the invitation. Nick, who's going
- 47:52to be there? Everybody? You? Me, Donrothy, Eric Fiance,
- 47:55his name Andy right, McCaulay, Mimi, Gilbert, Jeorgis, I'm morell
- 48:00Oh what a lovely party leaving everybody? What is the leaning of this,
- 48:21the meaning of what we me? Why would we all founded up like common
- 48:23criminals and talk to the sit eat me and talk? Will everyone please be
- 48:28seated? Not I be here? Andy next to her? Please, Charles
- 48:32please very well? Mee me on the other side of Andy and mister Jorgson
- 48:37over there please, and they can not at all, mister McCauley. Next,
- 48:40of course, why fight where you are? Listen and Gilbert you can
- 48:47sit just opposite mama. Mister Joe, I have a will listen to it
- 48:51later in second guild. You and your men will stand by the door.
- 48:54Please, you're fine now, Nora, if you will sit here by me,
- 49:00ngiments of Charles. Now we're all ready to begin. Oh me trying
- 49:04to tell you missus lyon, No, I will not. I demand to
- 49:07know why we are here, all right, I've got some important nudes I've
- 49:13seen, win certainly, I mean it. That's nothing I saw myself,
- 49:19yes, meaning when last night he can't get me and my appart? Oh
- 49:22did he? What did you say? Okay? Very much? You won't
- 49:25know how I was and how the children were. I am afraid you're lying,
- 49:30Mimi. You see, I really did see why not last night?
- 49:34Are you kidding? Now? Why didn't you tell me? Why don't you
- 49:36hold him? Because I found out for certain that he didn't commit the murders?
- 49:43Thank you, Raley, you knew Julia. But she dripping winey taking
- 49:47go on the fly. Well, she don't say she is but I figure
- 49:52she is. Yeah, thank you. No, I'll tell you why.
- 49:54I know Whyett didn't commit those murders three months ago. Why not found out
- 49:59that Julie was cheating him and was splitting with some man. He went to
- 50:02find the man, and he did. That man was desperate. He knew
- 50:07that he was caught dead to right, and as setting him in the face,
- 50:09he took the only way out. He killed. Oh, I'm terrible
- 50:15to tell you this way, dotty, that your father's dead. Dead.
- 50:19He's been dead for three months dead. Oh, darling, don't cry.
- 50:24It's terrible. Isn't really better than he's better? Take a home, man,
- 50:32Come on, let them out of Don't cry, darling. Three How
- 50:45can you cried? Be dead? You said yourself to the shot him last
- 50:47night? So I did. I saw him lying buried in his shop.
- 50:51You mean that buddy was perficly And the murderer's right here in this room tonight.
- 50:58He's sitting at this table. But who is it? I don't know,
- 51:02but I thought we all had a little get together we might be able
- 51:06to find out. I'll tell you as much as I know, this murderer
- 51:09is a very clever man. He planned the whole thing beautifully. After he
- 51:15killed Wymont, he wired McCauley, using Wymytt's name and holding the shot off
- 51:19the shop. Then he took Winy's body and spreded it in the shop with
- 51:22another man's clothes to throw us off the fight. He even put a sep
- 51:27buckle with an R on it, hoping that we'd think it was Rosewater,
- 51:30an old enemy of Winan to drop out of sight years ago. I'm a
- 51:32ruddy yeah. Would you mind holding your knife to out the way? You're
- 51:37worrying and guilty? That nice miss, and I'll look for you're both.
- 51:42I hope you'll look well. After our hero had killed Wymant, he got
- 51:46a brilliant idea. He realized that he and Juliet could still collect money.
- 51:52Wyatt was supposed to be on a trip no one knew where, so our
- 51:54dinner guests wrote letters to McCauley, signing Wynett's name so that McCaul they would
- 52:00continue to send the money to Julia. He even telephoned McAuley. Do you
- 52:04remember McCauley the first day that you came to see me? He telephoned that
- 52:07he was in town. It must have been Winers. I should have known
- 52:09if it worded his voice all. He was clever about that. He called
- 52:13when you were out. That same afternoon, Julia telephoned him. She said
- 52:17that you were coming, Mimi to ask about Winett. He got terrified.
- 52:22He was afraid that Julia would break down and tell so he went to Julia
- 52:27and killed her and left wymant watch chain in her hand. Maybe makes sense,
- 52:37Fuie, please, His plan was still working beautifully. The only hitch
- 52:43was a man named Nunheim, who had found out something. Oh wow,
- 52:47he wrote from him off two he wrote over just one item. The telegrams,
- 52:52wiles and telephones roll very well. But no one had seen Winett.
- 52:58So the murderer picked on Paul had to strengthen his case. Mimi is the
- 53:02only one at this table who can tell us who the real murder is.
- 53:06Hem who was it? Told you to say you've seen wineut nobody told me
- 53:10I did see What did he pay you, Mimi to stick to that story?
- 53:13Is the story? It's true, I did see Wine and he's not
- 53:16sick. You're lying, Memi, But then you do anything for money.
- 53:20You're getting a good price for saying. This all lineup I'm not going to
- 53:22stay here and be and set this for down. You're getting a good price,
- 53:25Mimi. But don't forget this. Two other people who are in with
- 53:30him on this deal, Julia and Nunnheim, when he thought they might spill
- 53:34something, he bumped them off. You ought to know don well that he's
- 53:37not going to take any chances on you. What do you want to do?
- 53:38Be mixed on his lips? No, no, so no? Is
- 53:40he who paid you that money? McCauley. I think that will hold him,
- 53:49boy, boy with a Hey, nice work, mister Charles as your
- 53:52man inspector. Mister McCauley, I can't believe it. Boy, you want
- 53:55me to do wrap him up and sell a p him, Take him up
- 53:58and get him out of here. Come on, boy, Graham, let
- 54:00me get ahead of him. I knew you would. Yeah, another KA
- 54:05re prize fighter. You're grand, You're glorious. I but you say that
- 54:09to all the boys. Well that's that the story of the Thin Man with
- 54:38William Powell and Martin Lloyd. I'm going to get them back out of here
- 54:42and I'm minute to talk to you. As you know, these broadcasts from
- 54:45lux Radio Theater quite an event in Hollywood and among our many friends here tonight
- 54:47is one of the greatest stars of the silent pictures. I admired her from
- 54:51Afar when she was doing such magnificence typicles as Cleopatra, and I was just
- 54:55next to her. Today she is the wife of one of our leading film
- 54:59directors in order for many years as the most charming and vicious lady. And
- 55:02I want you to meet her now, Miss Fita Barrat, Thank you Woody.
- 55:15Our Hollywood entertainment has certainly developed amazingly since I was making pictures. Yes,
- 55:20everything's different now, as you and I know, we saw our pictures,
- 55:22grew up and started to talk. We had to translate all a meson
- 55:27into pant mime. Oh you may think you have trouble today, but do
- 55:30you remember the difficulty we had working with a flit screen. We had to
- 55:35express jealousy, hate, love or devotion or in pant mimes. And at
- 55:40the same time, tooth Paste as a director, guided us with a one,
- 55:44two, three four, just as a metroanome God's a pianist. Santamine
- 55:50has always been one of the greatest arts. And may I say, miss
- 55:52Bara, I've always thought that two were one of the greatest masters i've bet
- 55:54artor. Oh, you're very kind, Woody. We worked awfully hard making
- 55:59those pictures. For instance, in making clear Passa, we had no research
- 56:02department at the studios. I work myself a month with the Purato of Egyptology
- 56:07at the Methotolisman Museum in New York. It's great fun, though, and
- 56:12a panas very You're going to make some radio appearances, Yes, I am
- 56:15Anna. I'm also going to do some motion picture work. No, that's
- 56:17good news. I'm considering an author now, running through scripts and ideas.
- 56:22Oh. I do hope everyone will be as happy about another pseudo barrel picture
- 56:27as I am. The public has been very good to me in the past,
- 56:30and I know they'll be awfully glad to see you again. I'm sure
- 56:34it'll be a great thrill, and not only seeing you, hearing your voice.
- 56:36Thanks miss Berry for joining us tonight. I'm glad. That's it.
- 56:38Good night. Hearing Peter Barrett talk of her plans brings to my mind some
- 56:50other plans I've heard discussed in Hollywood this week. Picture people are talking about
- 56:53Charlie Chaplin's recent statement where he will start working on a new picture very shortly.
- 56:58Ms Paul had got it will be started. Chaplain will write and direct,
- 57:00but will not act in it. A disappointment to many of us.
- 57:04Barbara Standbrick and Robert Taylor is starting a new picture today, and I'm tickled
- 57:07to death that I got the job directing. It's called his Brother's Wife.
- 57:12Speaking of Bob Taylor, there's a lad who's going places. He's got a
- 57:15great future, and sometime in that future he's going to do armand to Greta
- 57:19Garbo's Camille. Bill Powell and Marner lay here interested in the making of MGM's
- 57:23Picture of Good Earth. Louise Rayner who is with him in the great zig
- 57:27Field and formed any of the stars. And now Bill Powell and Marna Lawyer
- 57:30are coming out on the stage. Arise, Bill murnad, you did a
- 57:44great show. You're ready marvelous? What no rethinks? No? No property
- 57:49man? Yeah, Bill, I'll bet you're glad my property man isn't here.
- 57:52Remember how I used to watch it with the room mistake, when you
- 57:53weren't hurring on the set fast enough. Yes, Harry Harve is a great
- 57:55fellow and he's the most in the kind of because the whole picture isn't lesson
- 57:59Bill. I thought it was with me in the Artic when we made Estimal.
- 58:01He was with me in African jungle when he made trade of horn.
- 58:04And after a man is handled crocodile, sharks, pythons and polar bears,
- 58:07you've got to expected to be afraid of a mere actor. There's only one
- 58:10thing I can understand about that picture, Eskimo Woodie. How did they tell
- 58:15you from the polar bears? You wore rubbers? I wore a hat.
- 58:21It must be pretty tough, Woody when you have to tell through swamps to
- 58:23these tropics in the artist. I suppose when you call up and say you're
- 58:28going on location, your wife is, oh, yeah, location, Do
- 58:31you want the snow shoes or the stake five Madison. Unfortunately she doesn't say
- 58:36that. When I say I'm going on location, she just says, you
- 58:38are not inclutly. I thought all about that traveling. I thought all about
- 58:45it when the Lot soap people asked me to do this broadcast? Isn't it
- 58:47funny? And the Arctic soap is something they like to eat, and the
- 58:51topics they use soap for money, And here in Hollywood soap is something that
- 58:53keeps the stars beautiful. I can see that keeps learning beautiful, Woody,
- 58:57but when are you going to start using their is nice? What I do
- 59:02use is that that's no kidding anyway, Thanks for coming up kids, you're
- 59:07body ye all. Before I tell you about next week's show, I'm going
- 59:24to ask our announcement mister Rick, to tell you about more about the cast
- 59:28and about Hollywood studios who are cooperating with us. Our cast of characters tonight,

- 1:00:13Thanks to all of you on the casts. It did a swell job.
- 1:00:16Nice three greatest and gentlemen. The LUTs Radio Theater is going to have a
- 1:00:19great show for you. And believe me, l Joson Ruby Keeler are going
- 1:00:22to be here to appear in Burless. It was a smash it on Broadway
- 1:00:25and then a great moving picture and now it's going to make a Marves radio
- 1:00:29vehicle for l Joson Ruby Keeper. I think you'll like it to see so
- 1:00:47beat and mill return of the LUs Radio Theater and time him to produce Burless
- 1:00:52and you know he'll give you a great show. I've enjoyed being with you
- 1:00:54all. And good night. This is the Columbia Broadcasting System, welcome back.
- 1:02:05A very solid performance led by Powell and Loy, who were absolutely phenomenal
- 1:02:12together throughout the thin Man series. They had major roles together in thirteen different
- 1:02:19films, eleven of these between nineteen thirty four and forty one. When Mariner
- 1:02:24Looy decided to put her acting career on hold for the duration and focus her
- 1:02:30career and efforts around the Red Cross. It was a very interesting commentary thought
- 1:02:37by Van Dine at the start of the radio play about what he saw as
- 1:02:45the heart of the story. And he's using the word wholesome. Is a
- 1:02:50fascinating thing to say, particularly if you've seen the movie, because in the
- 1:02:55thin Man movie, and this is perhaps the most shockingly different thing about the
- 1:03:00radio drama is drinking and drinking two absurd levels was pretty much at the core
- 1:03:09of the Finnman's story. It was particularly in the movie. I think there
- 1:03:15might have been three or four scenes when the character of Nick Charles wasn't drunk
- 1:03:19in the movie. And of course the book as a novel by Nashal Hammett
- 1:03:23had even more things going on into it, some weird familial relationships, cruelty
- 1:03:31abuse, that sort of thing worked in even had a several page section where
- 1:03:37they read a section in a book that described the events of the Donner Party.
- 1:03:42For some reason. It's not anything over the top off on the book,
- 1:03:47but we were talking today's rating scales, we would probably say that the
- 1:03:52book's content was probably about PG thirteen, The movie was about a PG.
- 1:03:58And this radio was pretty close to G rated. And having experienced all three
- 1:04:04versions, I have to say that I think Van Done was right when it
- 1:04:10came to what was the core of the story and what really made it so
- 1:04:15interesting so worth watching, and it was the relationship between Nick and Nora,
- 1:04:20a solid mystery, and of course the chemistry between the two leads, which
- 1:04:26just comes through marvelously here. Now. The radio play also could be seen
- 1:04:30as setting the stage for what would come in December of nineteen thirty six,
- 1:04:35and that would be after The Thin Man, the very first of the Thin
- 1:04:40Man sequels. The film had a great influence. Certainly, there would be
- 1:04:45many husband and wife mystery solving teams, and all of them really do owe
- 1:04:53something to Nick and Nora. Charles and I will have to say, particularly
- 1:04:57mir Nilloy and William Powell. I think is one case where the movie was
- 1:05:01definitely better than the book. I think another thing that it did is you
- 1:05:05have a lot of comedy mysteries that came out after The Thin Man in the
- 1:05:11nineteen thirties and into the early nineteen forties. Even some pieces that would be
- 1:05:16better played seriously, or so we would think, ended up being played with
- 1:05:21some very comic screwball elements. I think in part because this worked so well
- 1:05:28as a mystery comedy with some screwball elements in it. There's a lot of
- 1:05:31differences between the book and the movie and the radio show. One that is
- 1:05:36a big difference, I think between the radio show and the movie versus the
- 1:05:43book is the Denuman where Nick Charles gathers the suspects. That wasn't in the
- 1:05:48book, but it certainly makes a riveting scenes in the movies. William Powell
- 1:05:55was fantastic. They did these in the first five film and did a great
- 1:06:01job on them. And overall this is just a very enjoyable radio program and
- 1:06:06film. The entire Thinman series is worth seeing, except maybe for a song
- 1:06:12of the Thinman from nineteen forty seven, which was made thirteen years after the
- 1:06:16original and was just not a great idea to go ahead and make. But
- 1:06:20at any rate, we're glad to bring that to you that will actually do
